Wanted To Buy iPhone 4s locked to Bell or unlocked

I'm looking for an iPhone 4s for my son which is either locked to Bell or unlocked, Find my Phone released and either the 16GB or 32GB size.

My son has dropped his phone too many times and is flakey and unreliable and because he's a gas pipeline worker in Northern Alberta he needs a reliable phone. Unfortunately he's trapped in a Bell contact until June and we are just trying to get a spare phone for him "just in case" so he can ride out the balance of his term.

Not looking for anything fancy, dings and scratches are OK, broken back OK too - as long as the screen is good and the phone is working I'll consider it.

PM or email me what you have (photos work wonders), accessories included, your asking price and location.

Thanks

Remap Toshiba keyboard?

My son bought a new Toshiba smart tv, a very cool tv for sure. He didn't want the keyboard that came with it as he's got one that he says is better, so he gave it to me.

I put in the dongle and got it to work ;) butI can't find out how to enlarge the font on any website. There is no Command key, of course, and I've tried Alt, Ctrl, Quick, Shift etc and the + sign, none of them work. Done some googling and looked in sys prefs too and I can't find the answer. Can anyone help me?

I have a Mac Mini with Mavericks on it.

Camera Recommendations

Hello all,

Just looking for some advice on a Christmas gift for the wife. Neither of us are photophiles (if thats even a word) i used to have a really good (in my opinion) Olympus camera but it has since passed on (and used to use a digital media that isn't available anymore if it was still alive!). Needless to say things have changed in the past 10+ years since i last bought a digital camera. She wants a nice new camera for Family and Travel pictures. We aren't shooting billboards or using this for commercial purposes. Portability i don't think is a huge issue (ie. doesn't have to fit in a shirt pocket).

So the budget is maybe up to about $400.

Is it better to go point and shoot or DSLR?

I was looking at some of the Black Friday deals and saw..

$399 Canon EOS Rebel T5 (IS) 18MP DSLR Camera With 18-55mm Lens & Camera Bag

$269 Canon PowerShot 16MP 42x Optical Zoom Digital Camera

Any thoughts or recommendations would be great!

Thanks!

Upgrade From OS 10.6.8

Hi folks. I would appreciate your thoughts on my situation. My 2008 (early) 2.8 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo (2 GB ram) is running 10.6.8 and doing a good job for what I am using my computer for nowadays. Surfing, email, movies and netflix, FaceTime and Skype, music, bridge etc. However, I have just purchased a new auto GPS and to register and get lifetime map upgrades I need at least OS .7 installed. SO my question is...what OS should I now install??? Seems I can purchase ML 10.8 for $20 or get the latest Yosemite 10.10.1 free from Apple? I just want my computer to run with no hitches and glitches and it's not that $20 is a hardship; just do not want to have to do this again for a few years LOL. IPad by the way, is still running IOS 7, and someday I will have to upgrade it when they get all the kinks ironed out. Thanks all.

Purging Adobe Bridge preview cache

This is an FYI, one that I've posted about before but felt the need to talk about again, especially in light of a rather extreme example from my own recent experience.

Conducted one of my semi-regular SuperDuper incremental backups last night, main HD had a little over 1.9 million files to backup. Thought that was a bit on the high side & decided to have a look at Adobe Bridge. I'm running v5.1 & knew that it had been some time (as in several years) since I had purged the preview cache therein. We've been doing some archiving lately & handling a lot of older files in Bridge.

I opened a Show Info on the main HD just to watch the space I'd be regaining. Started out with about 306MB used. I went into Preferences>Cache & hit the Purge button & for the next 10 minutes or so listened to the HD rattle away.

By the time Bridge was done, my HD showed 182MB used, a difference of 124MB! This morning I reran SuperDuper & there were only 880,000 files to backup, a difference of over a million!

In addition, there's little to no delay using Bridge because it no longer had to compare new Preview versions of images against a database of over a million archived ones.

Takeaway? Purge that cache a little more often than once every 5 years, dummy. It could regain you a ton of HD space, make your software run faster & save some wear & tear on your HD.

Clean Install Help Please

Hi Guys - I have various Yosemite probs – eg screen fills with large white ‘page’ during start up and when finder shows up I can move/adjust the page size like a word doc then when desktop items star to appear the ‘page’ disappears.

My problem is I dont know what a clean install involves now how to do it. I am running a mid 2011 21.5 inch iMac with 4gb memory. I was part of the original Yosemite test group and the ‘screen’ thing only appeared after my first update that’s why I hope a clean install will fix things. So - can you guys talk me gently through a clean install bearing in mind I am a BOF.

Thanks

Yosemite = Spinning Beach Ball.....WTF?

I have a late 2009 27" iMac that was running Mountian Lion withou any issues.

I updated to Yosemite (don't know what made me do it) and ever since the bloody beach ball of death has been showing up constantly.

At first I thought one of my external drives was acting up, so one by one I disconnected them. Still showing up. then I booted into safe mode, still showing up....i'm at a loss here.

Yosemite has made this stable Mac very unstable. its driving me crazy.

Anyone have any ideas on what to do?

I have two options left for me.

Option 1:

do a clean install of Yosemite, not sure how to get all my files and programs back without reinstalling everything.

Option 2:

go back to the OS before Mavericks.....once again not sure how to get all my install back the way I wanted them...even all my emails.

I have everything backuped up with time machine.

any advice would be greatly appreciated.

safari question

Hi,

I keep getting locked up on my Macbookpro or slowed down when I have Safari open. I'm only using it now because my work email is gmail and I don't want to open it in Firefox because I heard "they" monitor your searching when you're logged in to Google.

I just did a search about the spinning ball and someone said it's an issue with Safari 10.10.1 I just checked and mine is 5.1.10 ....a little old....? But if 10.10.1 is having issues can I upgrade to 10.10.0 ? AND....should I even do this?

It's affecting the speed of other programs too. So that is annoying too.

any thoughts? Thx.

which era Macbook Air to buy for travelling?

I may be leaving the country for a few to several months and will need a portable computer. I have a Mac Mini which I obviously won't bring, and an iPad but the iPad is limited in using certain apps such as Wordpress and Pixelmator.

I'm looking at getting a used MB Air, and wonder which year would be sufficient. mid 2011 (11") models sell for around $600-650 which seems reasonable. Here's one:

Mid 2011 MacBook air 13"

Basically what I'd like to do is:[LIST][*]internet[*]photo editing (I'm a novice and still learning Pixelmator so it's light usage)[*]blogging via Wordpress[*]Word docs (very light)[/LIST

I'd like it to last for the next 2-3 years and not be so slow that it's painful.

Is a circa 2011 sufficient or should I consider a 2012 model?

Is 1.4Ghz, 4GB RAM and 128GB Flash enough for such light use?

For Sale MacBook Pro 15" mid-2009 2.66GHz/8GB/500 SSD $795

I'm selling my 15-inch MacBook Pro.

As the title mostly says, it has a 2.66 GHz core2Duo, 8GB of RAM and a new 500 GB SSD. coconutBattery says 38 load cycles and 90% capacity for the battery.

It's in great shape except for one slightly rounded corner, visible as you look at the display, top left. This is quite unobtrusive and I can't see it from the top of the case.

There are no mechanical, electronic or software defects and this is the only hardware one. The machine has lived on a desktop all its life, in a Speck hard case. (I took it to work once, and the corner got that deformation.)

Input devices were all external so the keyboard and trackpad are basically unused.

The Speck case, the charger and the original box are included.

mac2Sell has this model in this configuration at $900. What with that rounded screen corner, I'm asking $795.

I'll ship, fully insured and properly packaged, by expedited mail or better, depending on what the buyer wants. Payment will have to be complete and in my hands or my bank before I ship.

I'm in Montreal, Rosemont, and I'll be glad to demo the machine. If anyone's interested, I have 100% positive feedback on eBay, Audiogon and CanuckAudioMart (where I'm a moderator).

I am planning to set this up as two separate drives (ie not Fusion or RAID) with the OS and applications on the SSD and data (mostly large photo files) on the HD.

IMAP in Yosemite Mail and iOS8?

I'm the computer tech for my mom. She has a 2006 iMac with Snow Leopard, an iPad Air with iOS 8.1.1 and a 2013 MacBook Pro with Yosemite. My problem is I'm trying to set up her email as IMAP not POP as she accesses it from multiple devices. The old iMac gives the option when setting up the email account to choose IMAP and so it is set up that way but not the other newer devices.

When I go to add a new account on Yosemite/iOS 8, the process is the same where you choose "another email account" as it's not part of the big 5. Then you type your name, password and email address and it does the rest automatically. but it automatically makes a POP account.

Sasktel's web help is geared to an older version of Mac mail. And they're phone support is no support at all. They say it's apple's problem. Apple wants money for mail support.

Seeking Advise 2009 20" iMac

Today I purchased a 2009 build 20" iMac with 8GB RAM. However, KB & mouse not included as I thought I could use my wireless KB & mouse from my existing 2006 20" iMac with my (newer) 2009 machine. Upon startup of new 2009 iMac, I discovered that initializing began with choice of language, and my existing KB & mouse would not connect at this stage with the new machine. Thus, I cannot get past opening screen.

Questions: Do I need to get and connect a wired KB & wired mouse to the new iMac in order to complete the initialization, or more generally, how do I solve my KB & mouse input issue so I can get my newer 2009 20" iMac up & running?

Advice will be much appreciated.

For Sale Mint Condition 2011 MBA 13" i7 1.8ghz/256gb SSD/4gb ram

Hello folks,

I am selling my mint condition Macbook Air (a1369) 2011 model. This machine has been babied from day one. It has been covered with a keyboard protector (no finger print/oil marks on the keys), a palm and trackpad film. This machine is in 9/10 shape, no scratches on the body or on the screen. The only sign of use are some light scuffs on the rubber feet on the base of the unit.

Here are the specs:

Display: 13.3-inch Widescreen (1440 x 900)

Processor: 1.8GHz Core i7

Memory: 4GB DDR3 SDRAM

Hard drive: 256GB Solid State

Optical drive: N/A

Graphics: HD Graphics 3000

Audio: Integrated

Networking: 802.11a/b/g/n

Ports: 2 x USB 2.0

The Macbook Air comes with the original sales receipt (Applecare has expired), box (which is in 9/10 condition) and power adapter. About 4 months ago, I had to replace the charger as it died, so I purchased a brand new 85w Apple charger (not the 45w the Air is equipped with).

My asking price is: $800.00. I am looking for cash offers only. I prefer to meet locally in the Ottawa area but can ship at buyer's expense. Please PM me with questions or if you would like pictures. :D

Which ipad model for my old man?

I've been giving my dad my old hardware as I'm upgrading, but this year I think I'll just get him something shiny and new. Black Friday is approaching, maybe there's some deals to be had.

He's 68 years old, but still reasonably handy with computers as he's used my old Google Nexus, Playbook and HP Touchpad, but I don't have experience with Apple tablets. I'd rather not have to explain the customization capabilities of Android nor metro tiles of a Surface tablet for him.

Seeing that iPads are probably best for him, what model should I go with -- pertaining to screen size and accessibility options, changing font sizes, etc easily would be vital? He still exchanges emails with his old friends in Chinese, so multi-lingual support is essential.

Apple Refurb is also an option.

Thank you.

Does sex ed conference for students go too far?

Amazing...

Does sex ed conference for students go too far?

Quote:

Students as young as 11 from across the state have been attending a sex conference held in Seaside, Oregon, for the past 20 years.

Quote:

The pamphlets go on to suggest other ways students can engage in intimate activities without going all the way, including bathing together, shaving each other, wearing each other’s underwear, role playing, buying an extra-large pair of pajama bottoms to sleep in together, lap dances and strip teases.

Another workshop at the conference focuses on how to pleasure someone else over the Internet.

“Teledildonics basically refers to the control of sex toys over the Internet; the remote use of sex toys,”...

Quote:

“All kinds of speakers about Internet porn, using Internet sex toys, using meth as is shown in this book for when you’re engaging in sex. It encourages using meth because it helps your sexual drive and what not in here,” said Maloney. “It says in this booklet that was handed out and given out to all young people.”

Indeed, a section of the handout Maloney referred to read: “Meth is widely used for a million reasons to have lots of sex with lots of partners for long periods.”

I really don't have anything to add...

What's wrong?

Hello All:

Thanks in advance, to all who will be responding to my question.

I have a 13", mid 2010, intel core duo, stock mbp. Recently, it started beeping upon trying to start up. When we try to turn it on, instead of the start up chime, we get one mid-length beep. Can anyone please tell us what the problem might be? Also, there are tmes we can get it to start up by applying pressure to the trackpad area and holding it down until the 'on light' begin to 'flicker' on.

Unrelated (I think), is the fact that the screen, when moved slightly - if/when the system starts up, suddenly goes 'blank'. It basically turns to whatever color the main page we were on, was. So if we move the screen when its starting up, it will turn 'grey'. If we're on a a page with another color, it will turn that color: pink, yellow, etc. I suspect its a loose wire or something related to the amount of heat produced from the system, which has overheated a wire. I really don't know.

Again, thanks to all who are so kind as to help us out.

Regards,

Ciaochiao

I think my monitor is nearly done

Apple alum. 20" -has been doing the whole going dark, I unplug it,works for a while,it behaves itself. Now that I've updated my OS to 10.10.1 it's had enough. It goes dark and pretty much stays that way no matter what I seem to do.I've tried covering the middle pin on the small plug on the cable that goes to the video card, which kinda, sorta works-but not really. So, when it comes to this-kinda,sorta,not really doesn't work. I need this to work, period. Besides,it's dvi and it's old. The LED does the short-short-long blinking,so probably the power adapter . A newer one is around $200- I can get a 28" monitor for around $600,so no adapter needed if I was to do that .Granted, it might not be quite as awesome, but I would have more screen space.Paying $900 for a new monitor from the Apple Store isn't gonna happen.Usual question-why now? It's been 9 or 10 years so I've gotten lots of use from it- still, the timing stinks

Thanks

Need a new ink jet printer that prints directly on CDs

The title says it all.

I have been using an Epson RX595 for a few years now and it did a fine job.

Ink cartridges are cheap (not OEM) and print quality was fine.

But I have not used that printer for maybe 6 months and now I can't get black to print no matter what I do.

All the other colours print fine, but absolutely nothing prints in black when I do the nozzle check.

I have cleaned, replaced the cartridge - no dice - maybe the print head control is toast.

Anyway, I wanted to try a Canon printer that I can convert to CD printing but the long list of Canon printers I have that can be converted are all Canon IP or Canon MP series, none of which seem to be recent models and none of which seem to be readily available.

Price is a factor - love to get one on sale at less that $100 sale price.

Any recommendations?

Also, on the Epson RX595, which is the Epson sucessor model?

I have looked at both the Epson and Canon websites - pretty poorly laid out and hard to find out which printers print on CD unless one looks at the specs for each one.

One would think they have a search capability where one enters the features and requirements and the website brings up the printers that meet those requirements - but no - that would be too easy.

Hard drive needs repair, but no bootable OS disc

A coworker brought in her C2D iMac 20". She has been having issues with it freezing and crashing. I did what I normally do first, verify the hard drive and would usually repair. A warning popped up saying it needed to be started up from another disk to run a repair. I have done this on my rMBP before and would boot into the recovery partition and go from there. This iMac is running 10.6.8 so it does not have a recovery partition. The system discs are long gone, I no longer have my copy of it. I do have a copy of Lion on DVD that I made. Does Lion create a recovery partition? Or would I be able to boot off the Lion disc and run a repair from there? Would it be safe to try and install Lion even though the Hard drive is in rough shape and then do a repair from the recovery partition (assuming it automatically creates one)?

ehMac iOS Mobile Is Awful

In case you have not noticed yet, ehMac has launched a new mobile version that no longer allows me to surf in Safari like I prefer and to be frank, so far it sucks.

Can't wait to see this mess on my iPad which worked just fine in Safari.

On my iPhone 6, it is just awful. Take a look at the home page. Why launch something this bad when it is not ready for prime time?

I wonder what Apple thinks of 'borrowing' and altering their corporate logo in the header?

Updated Smartphone Feedback Thread

We're pleased to announce that we have launched a new smartphone view on the site. This version has been designed to have a cleaner look, to fit really nicely into mobile (iPhone, Android) browsers, and unlike most normal web based skins will also include features that are normally reserved for desktop or phone applications. We built this as we realize you all spend more time today on your phones on the forum than you did 2 years ago, and we want to get the mobile view to a place where you can do everything (and more!) that you can do on desktop.

A few notes as I know many of you may have questions:

* This does not replace the free or paid in-apps that you have, such as any mobile apps. This is web-only.

* This new skin will only show when you access the site from a modern (Android 4+, iPhone) phone. It will not show for older phones or for tablets, blackberries or windows phones.

* Please give us some time as we work through bugs. Give it a try, give us feedback in our mobile thread url, and give it a chance. Every change needs time to get used to!

If you visit the site from your mobile phone, you'll get the new view automatically. You can login, post, reply, upload photos, view your private messages and more. You can also use the legacy mobile view by choosing the top left menu and Exit Enhanced Mobile Mode.

The feedback thread for any bugs, etc, please post below.

**Please let use know the device, software version, and browser being used if reporting any issues.

Thanks!

TV, ROKU, PLEX, how to put it together? Help please

Hi, in another thread someone mentioned using the PLEX app on his iPad instead of the ROKU remote.

I have:

A dumb TV

A ROKU 2

An iPad

An iPhone

A Windows 8 laptop (don't judge :o)

I paid $5 and downloaded the PLEX app and went to PLEX.com on the laptop to set up an account, filled out the form, and honestly chose 1944 as my birth year and I keep getting an error that I must be 13 to have an account, so I picked 2001 as my birth year....

So, supposing I can get them to allow me to set up an account, please tell me what steps I need to take and what else I need to do.

I'll write then about the form.

Hard wire iPad to power

Hey folks, this is going to sound like an odd request, but stick with me!

I have an iPad 1 that's retired from regular use and now serves as a coffee table device in the home theatre running the Plex app to select movies/TV shows to watch rather than using a remote for my Roku. Works great! Except it no longer takes a charge with the iPad powered on. My first iPad was replaced out of warranty for the exact same issue about 2.5 years ago. To get around it, you can plug in the iPad and then power it down and it'll charge. This is rather tedious however, so I'm wondering if there are any electronics gurus out there that can give me some direction on how to bypass the battery entirely and hard wire the iPad directly into power since it's stationary anyway. Has anyone tried this? Even theoretical ideas are welcome, I'll likely try it because I'm not out much if I fry this puppy. Thanks!

Renaming computers without messing up network?

I want to change how I am naming computers in our office (print shop). I did this once to my brothers computer and after that I always had issues connecting to it, it would never save the username and password and would try and connect via the old name. Am I going to run into issues if I go into sharing and change the name of computers? All the computers have the info saved about the other computers so they can connect without needing usernames and passwords. Some running Yosemite, others running Mavericks.

Is there any relatively easy way to monitor ISP traffic?

I have a wireless network using a Belkin F5D8236-4 v3000 router.

There are currently four computers connected to it, all via WiFi.

The connection to the net is via DSL provided by Bell.

I would like to monitor the total traffic, incoming and outgoing, to Bell.

For one to make sure their traffic measurement is correct but also because their "real time" traffic measurement is always four hours behind the actual traffic.

This creates a problem if I'm close to the end of my billing period and also close to my limit - with the Bell tracking I never know if I'm going over until it's too late.

I'm currently using TraffiX but I think that just measures traffic from and to the Mac it's installed on, not the total of all four computers - three Macs and one PC

Yosemite Server

So I bought my 2012 Mini a few weeks ago, and just today I read about Apple's Up-to-Date program for Server:

"Please submit your Up-to-Date request within 30 days of the date you purchased your server to qualify for the Up‑to‑Date Program. Customers who purchased their server between September 25, 2014, and October 15, 2014, have until November 15, 2014, to apply for the Up‑to‑Date Program."

I wonder if they'd be as nice as to extend their offer so I can get Yosemite Server (without paying the $20) to play around?

Glen A. Larson has passed away.

Glen A. Larson, Battlestar Galactica creator, dead at 77

Glen A. Larson, the writer and producer behind well-loved TV series such as the original Battlestar Galactica, Knight Rider, Magnum, P.I. and Quincy, M.E., has died. He was 77.

Larson died at the University of California, Los Angeles Medical Center on Friday night of complications from esophageal cancer, his son, James Larson, said in a phone interview Saturday.

Glen Larson, also an accomplished singer and composer, was a powerhouse in the television landscape in the 1970s and 1980s, when he churned out hits that became staples in millions of living rooms every night.

He also co-composed the theme songs for some of his hits, including the frequently sampled tune from Knight Rider and the orchestral music behind Battlestar Galactica, his son said.

"He was sort of an icon," James Larson said. "There are a lot of interesting things like that."

Glen Larson was nominated three times for an Emmy, once for a Grammy for the original score of Battlestar Galactica, and received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1985.

Glen Larson was born on Jan. 3, 1937 to a Swedish immigrant mother and a Swedish-American father in Long Beach, Calif.

iPhoto - library on external drive but will not open

I have my iPhoto library on an external hard drive.

Yesterday, I was presented with a message that I had to update my library due to inconsistencies. I was also asked to repair permissions. All through iPhoto.

During this process, the external drive lost the connection to the Mac, so I was presented with the usual warning about not unmounting correctly.

Since then, iPhoto will open, but not load the 70GB library.

I have tried holding the Option key while opening iPhoto, but still nothing, just the 'post it' note splash screen.

I have tried connecting the external drive to another Mac, but I have the same issue.

I'm looking for some suggestions - my thinking is taking me to removing the iPhoto plist as a starting point.

Any advice from you clever folks out there?

Thanks in advance

iMac Macintosh HD disappearing

Hey folks,

A few weeks ago I came home to find my 2007 vintage aluminum 20" Intel iMac, now running OS 10.9.5 booted up into what I believe is the recovery partition. It was asking for discovery of a mouse. Once past that it moved in to a choice of recovery from backup, re installation or disk utility.

I tried disk utility but all it could see was my 2 backup drives; time machine and carbon copy clone. It also said it could see "disk 2" with a single partition, the recovery partition. No Macintosh HD.

I rebooted into the Carbon Copy Clone and retried Disk Utility. Same thing. I did not have time to deal with it at the time, so I kept booting from the CCC for the next couple days. I then retried DU. This time it saw the drive. I tried verify but it could not complete. I tried repair but it said it could not fix it, so I erased it and copied the clone back to that drive.

It ran fine for about a week. Now today I come home to the same thing. The Mac HD is gone. I boot from CCC and verify. The most recent CCC backup worked last night because I can see a document I created last night on the CCC drive. In DU, I can see the recovery partition but not the Mac HD. For kicks I shut it down and unplug it. I get back to it about an hour. I started it up pressing the option key. This time I see 5 drives. Mac HD, & recovery on the internal HD, and Time Machine, CCC and Recovery from my external. I boot with Mac HD and verify it in DU. It says Mac HD if fine.

So is this a physical HD problem or software? I have not installed anything new recently. I have a new HD and tools ready to go to instal a new HD but would rather not if I don't have to.

Any insights you can provide would be very much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

P.S. The first time around, I recovered from Time Machine first but I found a bunch of stuff, like Firefox, had lost their custom settings. I then recovered from the CCC drive. Much better recovery. Exactly as I left it the night before.

Using Free Version of Prairie Fire

Like many I suffered the curse of iCloud and ended up with duplicate bookmarks. I've dealt with it for months (over a year already??!!) but it's getting old.

I downloaded Prairie Fire, but the truly free version doesn't save the changes made.

EDIT - I see my version actually uses the term "Demo Version". Perhaps in does not in fact perform ANY task permanently...

Soooo I assume you can still use it somehow. Save the Plist perhaps? Then probably import it.

I really have no idea how to do this or if it's really possible.

Can anyone walk me through it or any other recommended fix?

Any help would be appreciated!

EDIT - I'm running 10.9 and don't have to worry about my iPhone being connected to iCloud, as I no longer use it.

finding a neighbour whose network is open

In the coming months, I will be housesitting at a friend's home.

When I was there last week and showing some features that they can use when away. Taking their MacBook Air.

I went on-line to answer the query about mini-port/thunderbird port to use for viewing their iTunes video collection with a rocket-fish adapter to a smart television.

I realized that I was not on their wi-fi connection.

Low earth orbit, degradation, satellites. [Q]

Found myself at this page today, and the following passage sparked my curiosity:

SNAP-10A was launched from Vandenberg AFB by an ATLAS Agena D rocket on April 3, 1965 into a polar low Earth orbit altitude of approx. 1,300 km. It is in a retrograde orbit.

and

The reactor was left in a 700-nautical-mile (1,300 km) earth orbit for an expected duration of 4,000 years.[6] In November 1979 the vehicle began shedding, eventually losing 50 pieces of traceable debris. The reasons were unknown, but the cause could have been a collision. Although the main body remains in place, radioactive material may have been released.[1][4]

Question: How is this thing in a stable, 4,000-year-long low-earth-orbit without any functioning thrusters / nav / ground control intervention?

iPad Air2 or Mini3 - which to buy?

Hello iPad Community!

I would like to buy an ipad (Wi-Fi; 128 GB) - either the new air 2 or the mini 3. Please help me decide.

I have an iphone 5s - this will be my first ipad. A major use I have for the ipad is to track and chart stock market performance in a larger format than on my phone. But do I really need the air? The mini seems adequate and the smaller format would be more transportable and probably easier to hold.

I would also love to use it outside in the sun... which brings me to possibly the deciding feature between the air and the mini... how good is that antireflective coating on the air screen? will I be able to read the screen in bright sunshine? If I'm still housebound in nice weather, the new coating is immaterial to me. I don’t know what the fully laminated screen on the air means - is it stronger or ?

There are differences in the chip and the camera but I'm not sure I would really notice the difference... any thoughts?

Finally I would like to use Microsoft Office apps - especially word & excel. If you have any opinions on the ease of use and functionality of Office apps for the ipad, would you please enlighten me?

Thanks everyone - looking forward to your replys!

Home Depot goes Mac after big Windows data breach

Home Depot credit card hack details: Windows computer found guilty

Home Depot has confirmed in recent months that it too has been the victim of a complex malware attack, with hackers reportedly stealing more than 56 million credit cards and over 53 million emails in a record cyber heist. The Wall Street Journal has learned more details about the attack, revealing that hackers used a Windows machine as a point of entry, from which they were able to spread the malware and collect customer data. Interestingly, one of the first moves Home Depot made after learning about the attack was to purchase new, secure, MacBooks and iPhones for execs.

* * * *

... unsure about what information had been compromised, Home Depot “bought two dozen new, secure iPhones and MacBooks for senior executives, who referred to their new devices as ‘Bat phones.’”

It’s not clear what vulnerability in Windows the hackers exploited, but Microsoft patched it after the breach began. However, that was too late to stop the Home Depot hackers, who “were able to move throughout Home Depot’s systems and over to the company’s point-of-sale systems as if they were Home Depot employees with high-level permissions,”

The European Political Thread

Good on David Cameron. The EU is a sinking ship held together by progressives with little regard for the economic wellbeing of individual member countries:

Cameron says Britain should not stay in EU 'come what may' | Top News | Reuters

Quote:

LONDON (Reuters) - Prime Minister David Cameron said on Monday that Britain should not be willing to stay in the European Union "come what may", as his main political rival said the promise of a referendum on membership of the bloc was creating uncertainty for businesses.

In a bid to quell dissent among his own lawmakers and win back voters who have defected to the anti-EU UK Independence Party, Cameron has pledged to renegotiate Britain's EU ties before offering a membership referendum in 2017 if he is re-elected next year.

iOS 8 Wi-Fi Issues Solved

Not sure if anyone else is having these issues but I just got my cell bill and wasn't happy. Apparently the wi-fi on my new iPhone 6 hasn't been working properly, I didn't notice because it would switch over to LTE data instead. Well I got my bill and I went over by 1gb. So after searching to find out why my wi-fi has been cutting out I found the below fixed the problem, thought I would share to keep others from pulling their hair out over the problem.

Many users have reported that they’ve solved their issues by disabling Wi-Fi Networking under Settings > Privacy > Location Services > System Services. This only relates to your location being used for Wi-Fi Networking, so it doesn’t disable Wi-Fi entirely.

We are unable to delete an unwanted message from a past deleted contact. This unwanted message keeps showing on Skype Home. Home shows “Updates from…………..are now hidden” We are unable to get rid of this reference to an unwanted past contact. This is not acceptable. We do not want ANY reference to this past contact showing. How can Skype engineers be dumb enough to supposedly "hide" a message but then forcibly retain a notice advising that updates from this unwanted contact have been hidden? We want ALL references to this former contact and its messages deleted!

We have deleted and reinstalled Skype several times but the problems persist. We have to assume there is some sort of fault in Skype that the supplier is unable or unwilling to remedy. Have others come across these issues? If so, have they been solved?

How can this message/notice be deleted or what is the practical alternative to Skype?

Hi folks,

I'm looking to purchase a cheap, old 13" macbook for my daughter to use for internet/online school and DVDS. I've seen some older models on eBay, circa 2009 for about $185 USD. Just wondering what minimum specs to look for for these needs?

Thanks

Fusion drive compared to SSD?

I am thinking of purchasing a iMac 5K next week. The specs that I am going with are:

4.0GHz Quad-core Intel Core i7, Turbo Boost up to 4.4GHz

8 gigs of ram - will upgrade that on my own

AMD Radeon R9 M295X 4GB GDDR5

What I am not sure of is the fusion drive. How does it compare to a full on SSD? I understand what it does, but compared to an SSD, is the speed similar or close? Currently I have a rMBP with 512 SSD and I am hooked on the speed, so I do not want to step down in that department.

Mac mini: 2012 i7 vs 2014 i5

I'm considering replacing my 2011 mini with a new model. My local Future Shop has an open box 2012 mini, 2.3 ghz i7, 4 mb RAM, 1TB drive available for $700. The question is whether I would be better off with that or the purchase of a new mid-level mini with a fusion drive (2.6 ghz i5, 8 gb RAM, 1 TB fusion). The cost of the latter is $909, so $200 more than the older i7, but with more RAM. If I bought the older model I could upgrade the RAM, if necessary, to 8 gb for less than $100. I already have an SSD I could install in it, and I could even use the double drive sled that's in my 2011 mini. I don't use the mini for anything taxing; a mix of email, web, office apps and occasional watching of videos and listening to music, and I rarely have more than 3-4 apps open at the same time.

What's driving my interest is the quad core i7, which I have never had, and which I know isn't made anymore on the new minis. It would also be nice to continue to have the ability to upgrade RAM, but I'm pretty certain that if I bought the new mini with 8 gb, I would be unlikely to need more for a long time, if ever.

FS has the 2012 model set up as a demo, and noticed that basic functions on it are so much faster on than on the brand new iMac next to it with the same 5400 rpm drive. Is this the i7's doing?

Mac Problem

I seem to be having a problem. I just looked at my internet usage and for the last few days, and I've noticed that my data upload usage has been way higher than usual. I can't figure out why my upload data usage is up so much since I haven't been uploading anything to the internet. The only major thing I've changed lately is to upgrade to Mavericks. Can anyone shed light on what may be happening?

AppleCare?

Every computer/devise I purchased from Apple has included AppleCare. Must be somewhere in the realm of 9-12??

I have never made a claim and perhaps that's just plain luck. Consumer's Report claims only 8% of Apple products require repairs and suggest extended warrantees are not a good deal.

I'm going to order a new 13" retinal MacBook Pro and based on the all that I'm NOT going to invest in AppleCare.

Is this a risky or wise move?

Has anyone lost the use of Crackle on their Apple TV. It seems after the most recent update I cannot get the thing to work. It tells me to go to crackle.com/activate and put in a code. Which I did, it that does not seem to work, nor can I figure out how that tells my Apple TV it is activated.

I also lost the use of Hoopla after a recent update of my iPad .... Anyone experiencing lost use .of times after these updates?

Is an iOS downgrade possible if I have a full backup?

I bought an iPad Mini 2.

Came with iOS 7.0.3, very quick but safari tends to crash a lot on certain pages, and this has been fixed in later versions.

If I make a full backup of the current iOS 7 image, and I copy the backup files to another folder (so iTunes doesn't overwrite them), can I restore from the backup in case iOS 8 slows down the ipad too much?

In other words, when I restore from the saved backup, do I get iOS 7.0.3 back?

Calgary Vet Affairs attack averted

Calgary skyscraper targeted by man who pleads guilty to explosives offences

A Calgary man who once worked in military intelligence has pleaded guilty to firearms and explosives charges, after police found evidence suggesting he was planning an attack on a downtown Calgary skyscraper that houses a Veteran Affairs Canada office.

The 45-year-old man, who can only be referred to as GG under a court-ordered publication ban, had undergone a preliminary psychiatric exam and was fit to stand trial, but pleaded guilty Thursday in a Calgary courtroom to three of seven charges.

* * * * *

Crown prosecutor Doug Simpson told CBC News that a terrorism charge was considered but never laid.

GG was arrested last January after he was found with weapons, explosives and detailed building plans, apparently targeting the Veterans Affairs office on the seventh floor of the Bantrel Tower, at 700 Sixth Avenue S.W.

* * * * *

RCMP were called by GG's wife, whose name also can't be released under the publication ban, on Jan. 8, 2014, at 5:47 p.m. after she suspected that her husband was possibly suicidal.

She told police that GG was a former member of the military and that he had taken a rifle with him when he left their home.

After a search of several hours, police found GG on his parents' acreage near Springbank just west of Calgary. He was sleeping in a utility trailer and dressed in camouflage pants. Police found a duffle bag beside him that contained a loaded .40-calibre HK semi-automatic handgun.

GG told officers he intended to commit suicide. He was arrested under the Mental Health Act and taken to hospital for treatment.

older firewire backup up drives-new computers with usb

Hi, Just wondering what people do with outdated firewire technology. The computer with firewire port is perhaps near end date. The backup drive with firewire is fine. But newer computers don't have firewire. What to do with these backup drives? I've read that you can install some kind of built in converter but isn't helpful for our computers.

Boot Issues with higher capacity iPhones

Not sure if I should be concerned about my iPhone 6 128GB. Sounds like Apple is changing to a different flash memory:

"Apple will switch from using TLC (triple-level cell) NAND flash to MLC (multi-level cell) NAND flash in the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus after users have experienced crashing and boot loop issues with the higher capacity versions of both devices, reports BusinessKorea. Sources have told the paper that flash memory firm Anobit, which Apple acquired in 2011, is to blame for the manufacturing defects. Apple will reportedly switch to MLC NAND flash for the 64GB iPhone 6 and the 128GB iPhone 6 Plus, and will also address crashing and boot loop issues with the release of iOS 8.1.1. Apple previously used MLC NAND flash in previous-generation iPhones."

(Mac Rumors: Apple Mac iOS Rumors and News You Care About)

The 128GB iPhone 6 is not mentioned in these changes- go figure.

macbook pros limited to 16 gigs of ram?

I am looking at upgrading from my retina MacBook Pro next year. Will wait till the next release. I have also been drooling at the new iMac because of the display. I have been pricing out both and the MacBook Pro costs a bit less. I noticed that now the MacBook Pro comes with 16 gigs of ram (15" model) but no options for more. Why would they limit it to 16 gigs? I am pretty sure there used to be an option for a 32 gigs of ram on the rMBP. This is a computer for work running Adobe CC, so I like to have as much RAM as I can.

Yosemite? 'nuff said

what with all the little problems I've been having, I thought this was appropriate. Mavericks was fine (in one episode of Looney tunes, when Yosemite Sam discovers oil, Mavericks was his assistant and did all the work. price check/interest in lampshade iMac

The wife and I are empty nesters looking to downsize meaning I need to let go a number of Apple items collected over the years.

I have a 1.25 lampshade iMac in great condition comes with the ball speakers, the only problem is the wifi antennae connection is damaged but replaceable. I can't remember if the wifi card is in it or on the shelf somewhere. The ball speakers even have the clear 3 hole cover making the speaker completely round save the flat bottom.

I also picked up from an ehmac member a few years back the iSub and sound stick speakers still in immaculate condition.

I have some older software and games maybe 5 or so years old.

There are some macbook cases/keyboards etc to leave as well.

Let me know what you may be interested in and please give me an idea of the value of the iMac and speakers thanks.

share contacts between macs and iOS devices?

Right now I use my iCloud account to sync our address book at work (small family print shop). I would like to get away from doing it this way, but still have an address book that is synced between 4 macs, 4 iPhones and 3 iPads. It gets to be a mess with iMessage, FaceTime and other things when setting up new devices and want to keep my iCloud to myself now. Is there away to keep all the address books synced up without iCloud?

gmail account crossover

Hey folks! Been a while since posting, family and work got in the way.

Anyway, things have been running smooth with our macs but lately I have been having trouble with my gmail accounts.

I will receive an email through account one and respond to the email with account 1 in the 'from' box. I will receive a response back but the next time I reply and receive a response it will be through account 2. After a few more replies and responses it will be through account 3. What gives?

Account 1 was created for work related emails

Account 2 was created for friends

Account 3 was created to sell on kijiji

They all have 'imap.gmail.com' for the incoming mail server

The outgoing seems to be all over the place for each and I don 't know what they should be.

Thanks for any help I can get!

Good to be here.

What to do with an old iMac

Hello brain trust. Another question. I have a 2009 iMac, 20inch, 2.66 Ghz, Intel Core 2 Duo, 320 GB HD. About a year ago I noticed a the lower half of the screen was dimmer than the upper half. Scouting around I figured the one/some/ of the lower LED back light was burned out. I replaced it with a 2013 27" iMac earlier this year. When I was last in the repair shop I asked about fixing the 2009 iMac. The tech told me it would cost about $400 to fix the back light, which was probably more than the machine was worth. Other than the screen, and its age, it was working fine when I last shut it down. I hate to scrap it, but was wondering what my options might be? I'm not really looking for very much money, if any, but hate to see it in the garbage. Any thoughts? Thanks. Bobby

Time Capsule - are there logs?

So, I picked up a Time Capsule, and I've migrated my firewall rules and port forwards from my DLink router.

I'm wondering if there's a place I can go to view system logs - like when it lost connectivity to the internet, gained it back, etc, etc? It was pretty easy with the DLink via the admin panel.

I don't see anything within Airport Utility to view that type of info.

Will transferring apps to new iPad also update iOS?

I am currently using an iPad2 running iOS8. I bought a used iPad3 running iOS7.

I know I can transfer, using iTunes, my apps and data from my current iPad2 to the iPad3.

But, in the process of transferring, will iTunes also update the iPad3 from iOS7 to iOS8?

(For the sake of simplicity, lets assume that all my current apps will run on iOS7.)

Copy a DVD

This can't be that hard on a Mac.

My wife asked me if I could create a copy of a school DVD. I have been following the instructions in this post http://ift.tt/1DWsA6B

but I can't seem to get it to work as when i insert the blank dvd it says there is not enough space as seen in attached screenshot.

Here are the instructions

Quote:

Duplicate a CD or DVD

1. Insert the DVD/CD;

2. Open Disk Utility, and select the DVD/CD from the left side list (select the DVD/CD icon on top);

3. from the DU File menu select New | Disk Image from Disk 1;

4. Choose to format the disk image as DVD/CD Master, name the disk image and click Save;

5. When the .cdr file is finished select it with mouse and press COMMAND-I to open the Get Info and check the box to lock the file;

6. Choose the .cdr file from the left side list, click Burn, and insert a new, blank DVD or CD.

The disc will have the .cdr extension which you want to change to .iso before burning.

Now I don't know why they left the last line out of the sequence and is it required?

Writing to encrypted USB drives is really slow

In the process of setting up my new Mac Mini server, I'm putting in place external storage on USB 3.0 drives. To date, I've connected two drives:

-A Seagate Expansion 4TB USB 3.0

-A MediaSonic ProRaid with 4x3TB (Hardware Raid5) using an eSata to USB3 adapter to connect to the Mini

In both cases, the performance is significantly higher when formatted in HFS+ compared to HFS+ Encrypted.

In the case of the Seagate, write performance decreases from around 95 MB/s to 45 MB/s. In the case of the ProRaid, performance decreases from 180 MB/s to 17 MB/s. Both internal drives in the mini are encrypted, and show no performance decrease.

I've also noticed that the reads in/sec and writes out/sec are about 8 times higher for the same file transfer to/from an encrypted drive vs. the same drive without encryption. I have to wonder if it's the USB driver that balks at FileVault.

I'm trying to be more security conscious in this day and age, so my plan was to encrypt any external drive with a random 20-character key, store it in the server's keychain and not record it anywhere else. That way, the drive will only work on that specific Mac should it ever be stolen or compromised. (Yes, that's a bit paranoid). I don't think I can work with a drive that slow though.

I'm running a fresh install of Yosemite.
