Google Earth Pro ($399) now FREE

Sweet....

Once $399 A Year, Google Earth Pro Is Now Free

Lots of people have dabbled with Google Earth to fly around their neighborhood or poke around a 3D version Paris. But how many dropped $400 (per year!) for a Pro subscription?

Not a ton, it would seem. At least, not enough for Google to keep counting on it as an income source.

Google has just nixed the subscription fee for Google Earth Pro, dropping it from $400 a year to completely free.

You’ll still need to get a key from Google to unlock the Pro features, but that’s a matter of filling out a quick form.

* * *

Here’s what it can do that the non-Pro version can’t:

  • Print images at 4800×3200; non-Pro is capped at 1000×1000.

  • Automatically import a few thousand addresses at once to be pinned on a map

  • Capture HD videos of what’s on screen.

  • Measure distances/areas using lines, paths, polygons, circles, and more. Non-pro can only handle lines/paths.

I can still hear the sound of the crash.

"Back to my Mac" giving DNS error

I having this problem more and more now. Screenshot attached.

Because of this issue, I am unable to do some of the stuff that relates to Handoff or Continuity, like:

1. Making and receiving phone calls on the Mac;

2. Messages. When I try to send a Message from the iMac, I get an error saying message cannot be sent.

Oddly enough, webpages opened on the iMac show up n the iPhone and vice versa.

I reset the PRAM, it worked briefly, and then today again it does not work.

If it helps, I shut down the iMac every night and turn it on every morning. Also, I am connected wirelessly through my airport Extreme, with all DNS stuff configured on the AEBS instead of on the Mac (since I have multiple Macs and iDevices).

Re. DNS, I have tried Google DNS, OpenDNS, and my ISP's DNS - al of them exhibit the same issue; again, intermittently.

Any ideas on what else I could try?

Thanks and cheers

Scan multiple pages quickly?

We are looking at potentially upgrading a digital press at work. The one we are replacing has photocopy functions, the new one that we might potentially upgrade to does not have this feature. We do not do a lot of photocopying, but a few times a year we get someone coming in with a 50+ page manual they want photocopied.

Are there are any stand alone speed scanners that would create a pdf that I could use for print? Would need to be able to insert a large manual and have it auto scan each page quickly.

Beware of Apple notice via email

Just got this email on my iPhone alerting me of an app purchase on another device. Made me a bit nervous but when checking the email at home on my Mac, it definitely looks suspicious:

Your Apple ID was just used to download Camfrog PRO 6.99$ from the App Store on a computer or device that had not previously been associated with that Apple ID.

This download was initiated from Canada.

If you initiated this download, you can disregard this email. It was only sent to alert you in case you did not initiate the download yourself.

If you did not initiate this download, we recommend that you go to iforgot.apple.com to change your password, then see Apple ID: Security and your Apple ID for further assistance.

Regards,

Apple

I did tap on the iForgot.apple.com link on my iPhone thinking that I should change my password real quick and saw some video site in the address bar and closed it.

Can I install Lion on a USB drive?

I have a situation where a person running SL on her Mac requires Lion or later for a half hour once every two weeks to run a webinar.

The webinar software no longer runs under SL and Lion or later will break other applications on her Mac.

We discussed this issue in a previous thread here....

Now I thought I could come up with a simple temporary (as long as required) solution.

Install Lion on a USB drive, boot up on that USB drive for the half hour every two weeks to run the webinar, otherwise continue with er current Mac untouched.

So I tried to installLion on a 32 GB USB drive - things seem to go well except that the install took forever - it semed to stall, time remaining was way off.

To go from 11 minutes remaining to 6 minutes remaining took the better part of an hour rather than the expected 5 minutes.

So I finally aborted since I needed the Mac for other purposes.

Question:

Has anyone done that - install Lion on a USB flash drive?

Does it work in the end, ie can I boot up on it and access the net?

Is the slow install only due to the USB 2.0 interface?

I realize that USB 2.0 is about half the speed of FW400 but the speed at which that install was completing was ridiculous.

How to physically lock a Mac Mini

I have a 2012 Mac Mini. I need it to be physically locked to keep it from walking away. Is there an elegant way (ie Jony Ive would approve) to lock this bad boy down?

Most of what I see online either involve gluing an anchor point onto the aluminum chassis, or putting the whole Mini into a frame or box.

Thanks.

Any way to add an ´over a :

Title says it all.

I need to type a ladies name into a spreadsheet.

She is a native American and her first name includes a : with an ´*above it,

There doesn't seem to be any way to do this with a Mac keyboard - I can do all sorts of accents - é, á, ú etc, but finding a way to place that accent over a colon haseluded me so far.

I would need a way to do this in Word and Excel.

Any ideas?

Apple Reports Record First Quarter Results

Apple has announced financial results for its fiscal 2015 first quarter ended December 27, 2014. The company posted record quarterly revenue of $74.6 billion and record quarterly net profit of $18 billion, or $3.06 per diluted share. These results compare to revenue of $57.6 billion and net profit of $13.1 billion, or $2.07 per diluted share, in the year-ago quarter. Gross margin was 39.9 percent compared to 37.9 percent in the year-ago quarter. International sales accounted for 65 percent of the quarter’s revenue. The results were fueled by all-time record revenue from iPhone and Mac sales as well as record performance of the App Store. iPhone unit sales of 74.5 million also set a new record. “We’d like to thank our customers for an incredible quarter, which saw demand for Apple products soar to an all-time high,” said Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO. “Our revenue grew 30 percent over last year to $74.6 billion, and the execution by our teams to achieve these results was simply phenomenal.”

Windows Technical Support now has a Mac Division!!!!

Just an FYI to the Mac users out there who might get this type of call from "Windows Technical Support". They are now trying to scam us as well.

Had one of these calls today. Felt like playing along. When he finally asked what operating system I was using and I told him I expected to hear a click. But no! They must now have Mac training because I was asked to go to Safari and download a copy of Teamviewer.

For those who might not know what Teamviewer is, it is a legitimate piece of software that allows someone to completely take control of a remote computer. Allow someone to use it on your machine is akin to having them sit beside you and watch ever key you type in.

Then when I said that I should just take my Mac into Apple to get it fixed, he said he could prove that my machine had problems with it. He took me to the w3 site (governing body of web and HTML standards) and told me to go into the validator (which I have used in the past to check small web pages I was writing) and put in my email address. Then he tried to convince me that the 'errors' it was reporting were coming from my computer. Of course there were errors, I didn't enter a proper web site address for the validator to check.

Mac Pro and Adobe CC anyone?

After a ton of issues with a new maxed out iMac 5K and Adobe Indesign and Illustrator I have decided to return the 5k. I am still looking to upgrade from my Retina MacBook Pro. There is no real alternative at the moment. The Retina MacBook Pro is limited RAM wise and the upgrade would not that be that big from what I have now.

The only alternative is the Mac Pro. Now I am not 100% on going this route, I will probably wait till Adobe catches up with the technology in the iMac, though I am thinking I will have to wait for the next iMac 5K release. The issue with the iMac 5K is the gpu from what I have found. Now the Mac Pro is also running an ATI AMD gpu, different, but same brand. Does anyone use the apps mentioned on a Mac Pro? Do Indesign and Illustrator run well on these machines?

Thought I would chime in and say hi and chat a bit :)

Hi ehMacians. ehMax here. ;)

Long time no chat. Almost 2 years in fact.

Wanted to pop in an say hi to everyone. Maybe chat for a bit. Give a few updates. Take some heat. Say hi to old friends.

A lot has happened over the past 2 years... Career changes, marital status change, and struggles with health issues made for quite a challenging period on my life, however... things are much more positive these days. I have some more free-time on my hands right now, and some things I am doing made me think about the community here, so I thought I would stop in.

I've just started taking a course right now on social media management and online community management. Really, really interesting stuff. I can't help but constantly think back to ehMac and what I did right, and... what I did wrong. (Quite a bit in the latter).

I think the idea I had for ehMac was noble, and the intent on making it a brightly-lit, friendly place on the web do discuss all things Mac and Canada was a good idea. That was fun, and I really cherish the early days of ehMac, it's humble beginnings and growing.

As I get to the sections in my courses on Community Management, I start to see all the things that I did really wrong. There really wasn't a manual on how to run a community and I winged it, and made some terrible decisions and did some really bad, inconsistent moderating. I thought my job as moderator was to play judge on conflicts, and make a decisions on issues and hand out "sentences" or reprimands. I was bad at it and hated doing it. To boot, once in awhile, I would let my frustration get the best of me.

I want to say to those that were affected and frustrated by that, I apologize. I wish the courses I'm taking now were available 6 or 7 years ago. I think I would still be owning and running ehMac and there would of been a lot less frustration for members. I did wrong and disrespected a lot of valuable community members who spent a lot of their time contributing to the community. A lot of the things I thought needed to be eradicated from the site in order to maintain a strong, positive community were the very things that actually make a community strong. My focus was too strong on trying to keep it a bright-clean place. (Or too much like Disneyland as some would say).

Still, like a lot of memories, the bad ones fade and the good memories remain (Bad marriages notwithstanding). The early days of new members joining... The early Unreal Tournament frag-fests. I loved the excitement around those early Macworld's and Steve's announcements, and the real-time chats. I still have my ehMac Mug. There was some fun times at some of the Apple Store openings in Canada. I'm still so very proud of the fundraising we did for the MS Bike Tours, Movember and Kiva.org. I also was recently going through to memorabilia, and I saw the card that was made to me by many ehMacians for my birthday, when a U2 iPod was given to me. Still, one of the nicest gestures I ever had, and I still have it and always will. Happy times. :) (I'm going to search the forums for what Sync said about U2's free album. :lmao: ;)

Would love to chat and be a part of the ehMac community more. Maybe I'll be welcome... maybe I'll be lynched out and told to f*ck *ff. :) That's a big part of where I got it wrong. Realizing how much ehMac IS the community. How the community evolves naturally is what the community is, you can't moderate or direct what the community wants to be. The community after a period of time, will begin to self-moderate itself. (Which it seems to be doing quite fine right now). Heated debates and opposing point of views and polarizing figures are one huge aspect of what makes a community interesting and fun.

So speaking of polarizing figures...

Hi. :)

Performance Upgrades

Hey all,

I have an early 2011 Macbook pro running an 2.3 GHz Intel Core i5 with 4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 and a Intel HD Graphics 3000 384 MB.

It is a bit sluggish and I shy away from some games like starcraft 2 and apps like photoshop (cs4, not cs6). I am just wondering, should I expect to see a huge performance upgrade if I move to 16gb DDR3 RAM and an SSD? Or am I just tossing money into a fire getting these upgrades.

Any input is great!

Speech to Text on iPad

I’m trying to find information on the “Speech to Text” feature in the Notes app on an iPad.

My wife has an iPad 2, 64G, and she would like to record and convert lectures to text.

My wife’s friend has a newer iPad and is able to do this (I’ve ben told) very quickly and easily, using the Notes app which is supplied on the iPad.

When we try this on our iPad, we click on the microphone icon in notes, a wave form is displayed which responds nicely when we speak and an insertion cursor appears where we would expect the text to appear.

But no text!

I’m not familiar with the iPad controls & settings (get frustrated trying to make sense of the organisation). I cannot find any setting to turn on the text, I tried searching Google and Apple for some reference to this feature, but all reference other note taking apps like Evernote etc.

I’m hoping someone here with more experience can give me guidance with this problem

- before I pick up a small sledge and vent my frustration out on this miserable @#••&!!

New TV

Potentially in the market for a TV, and I'm particularly picky in what I like. Haven't been particularly impressed with what I've seen in stores, video quality wise. Basic needs:

- 1080p (no 4K, don't suggest it).

- Approx. ~48 inches; don't need 50"+ for my small living room.

- Must have an LED panel, with exceptional video quality.

Used for TV shows and movies, but additionally, for PC gaming. I've been to one too many friends' places with consoles and PC's hooked up to their TV, and the video quality is downright poor on an otherwise good looking TV, even when sitting at a distance as expected when looking at a 40"+ panel. Every once in a while, I run into a TV playing back 1080p content and I'm stunned by how good it looks. Too bad I never remember the TV. I want crisp images.

Haven't determined a price range yet, but I'm not going to cheap out too much, either. I don't need the newest technology like OLED that will drive up the price for no good reason. :)

Any advice?

NASA Finds Mysterious Bright Spot on Dwarf Planet Ceres: What Is It?

A strange, flickering white blotch found on the dwarf planet Ceres by a NASA spacecraft has scientists scratching their heads.

The white spot on Ceres in a series of new photos taken on Jan. 13 by NASA's Dawn spacecraft, which is rapidly approaching the round dwarf planet in the asteroid belt between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter. But when the initial photo release on Monday (Jan. 19), the Dawn scientists gave no indication of what the white dot might be.

Desktop background photo

It took me a while to figure out how to get a desktop photo background when I had Maverick. It never did change - it would always stay the same one - but I got over that.

I updated to Yosemite - but now - every morning, I start up the Macbook - I get my set desktop photo (it flashes for about 10 seconds) and then I get the Apple mountain thing.

I go in' every morning and reset the photo - but there is no option to 'save' - so for the balance of the day, I have my background - but the next morning we go through the same process.

I have tried to delete the Apple file from the options - but all that did was grey out the title. It still defaulted to the ugly mountain the next day. I had it set for random - but that never works. I changed it to keep the same photo - but it does not save beyond the day that I am working on.

Any suggestions?

emailing Tim Cook actually works

Well it at least gets a response.

So I have been having a nasty time with an iMac 5K I purchased in November (received beginning of December). The first one was defective and returned. The replacement had the same defective, despite being a new machine (not the same over, was shipped out from China). On the second go around, I called Apple Support, went through the same process again, the advisor said they would get back to me on Tuesday (I called on a Saturday). Tuesday came around, no return call, Wednesday no return call, but I was out all evening so did not call back. Thursday, still nothing so I call, leave a message. Nothing on Friday, I call leave another message. Nothing Saturday I leave another message then call Apple Support again and get a new advisor to help me out. He seems better, tells me the same things but that he is going to get back to me the next day. I wait, nothing, I call and leave a message, he is not back in the office till Tuesday. I leave a few more messages over the days he is supposedly working, no luck. So yesterday after trying to call the number and extension I have for me every 10 mins from 2pm on till 5 pm I decide enough is enough and send off an email to Tim Cook (found an email address with a simple google search).

I did not think anything would come of it, it was more or a polite rant. After that I phoned support again to get a new advisor to see if they can get let me know what is going on. At this point I have sent in the 2nd defective iMac with no word on if they are sending out a replacement or refunding me, again I am clueless and the communication is terrible. The new advisor gives me much more confidence then the last 2, he got all my details, phoned me this morning to keep me up to date on the statues, so I was/am happy that they are at least communicating and keeping in touch with me.

Well I get a call at work, seems Tim Cooks office got my email and now someone higher up is looking into this and pushing to get this fast tracked soon. No idea how they got my number, my email address that i sent from is my Apple id but it is not associated from work. Needless to say I was shocked to get a call and am happy that they seem to be taking this very serious now, which they should. With service like that Apple would quickly fall from the customer satisfaction spot they have had for many years. Now I very much doubt that Tim Cook read the email I sent, but nice to know there are people following and monitoring it to take action.

Another Bell Rant

I have ranted before, but I felt I should share another gem of a Bell story.

So my Dad passed away.

The Bell bill was in his name.

I called to change it to my Moms.

Bell told me there would be a $25 fee to change the billing name.

I was like are you serious?

I told them I was doing them a favor keeping the account accurate and making my Mom responsible for the bill. Otherwise I could just leave it unpaid, and they can just go through his estate. And certainly bad credit is not an issue for someone who has passed.

Format a locked drive

I had a 2012 MBA that was water damaged so I removed the internal SSD and sold it for parts on eBay. I then bought a USB3 shell for the SSD thinking I could at least use it as a backup drive for my photo's (offsite) but I've run into a problem.

While the MBA was functional I'd put on a firmware lock and now I can't seem to remove it. If I plug in the USB drive Finder pops up with a message saying the drive is locked and prompts for the password. After typing in the password it hangs for several minutes and then the pop up goes away and ....nothing. No mounted drive. I've tried booting into Recovery mode and trying to unlock the drive from there but it fails as well. My last attempt was to plug it into a Win7 machine and try and format it there. That allowed me to delete the old partition but wouldn't let me format and I still can't format it in MacOS.

Any idea's?

Bugginess creeping in....

Noticed for the last few weeks that there seems to be some buggy behaviour creeping in and some slowing down on certain user interaction such as clicks, etc.

Just today especially, I've noticed clicking menu items in Safari requires me to click several times to keep the menu up. The first couple clicks, it appears but then disappears. Generally, many Finder operations seems quite slow when clicking from window to window. Even closing a window will be delayed. I tried logging into the Guest account and everything seems much more responsive. Checked my System drive with Disk Utility (SSD) and appears to be okay. Not sure what else to look for. Any help would be much appreciated. I'm running my mid-2010 MBP on OS X 10.10.1 After logging back into my User account, it seems a bit better but I know it will start acting up again as usual.

Stream from iPod to Apple TV through router

We have several shows stored on our iPods and generally stream them through our router to the Apple TV - to play them on the TV

We use a couple of different apps - one is ACE player and the other is Oplayer.

Lately (for the past few weeks) the process is getting worse. It takes up to 5 minutes or more for the show (we are talking a 1 hour show = 42 minutes) to transfer to Apple TV. And then often stops during the show to catch up to itself.

We have a new router (provided by Telus) and perform the following - pretty much every day - just to get it started

1. Reset the router (unplug and replug it in)

2. 'Restart' Apple TV

3. Shut the IPod down and restart it

All appliances have been updated

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to improve our viewing pleasure?:lmao:

iTunes erased my content AGAIN!

Why does it do this? I have several playlists manually synced to my iPad, and when I go to add a song or two to any playlist, every OTHER song becomes uplayable either thru iTunes or on my iPad. In iTunes, every song has a (!) beside it, and wont play, on my ipad, the Music app just keeps skipping songs till it finds one it can play.

Like WTH, Apple? You issued an update to fix the "Ringtone syncing bug" but the Music bug has been there since iOS7 was introduced and it has NEVER gone away. Is this your way of forcing us to stream out music (rhetorical)???

I cannot be the only one this has happened to. To be sure, I borrowed someone's older iPad, still running iOS6, and synced music to it, then randomly added songs to random playlists. Not. One. Hiccup.

Connect iOS7+ device and no ends of syncing nightmares. Clearly there is a bug that Apple has chosen to ignore.

Suggestions other than resyncing AGAIN?

Any thoughts on the closure of all 133 Target stores in this country?

After experiencing the US stores, I found the Canadian locations extremely disappointing. It seems the most common complaints by customers were mine as well:

1. High prices.

3. Empty shelves, or dozens of shelves filled with bathroom tissue.

4. No online shopping or even a catalogue of available merchandise.

5. Poor locations.

6. No bull terriers wandering the stores (this may be just me).

Safari jams up my mac

I'm running Safari 5.1.10 and I have a message that "this version of Safari is no longer supported. Please upgrade to a supported browser." I don't know if this is why my Safari keeps jamming up but I guess it's a place to start.

When I follow the link to "supported browser" one of the messages is that the problem may be my extensions.

"Try disabling your browser extensions to solve the problem." ....I can't see where to do that. When I check them, though, I can only see Ad Block is installed. I'm not sure how to check what else may be there. The drop down menu under "Safari" just took me to a search page.

It's with gmail that I get this message of unsupported browser. The message given re gmail is:

To use Gmail, enable cookies and JavaScript

Regardless of your browser type, you must have cookies turned on to use Gmail. Also, if your browser supports it, enable JavaScript. Search on Google for instructions on how to turn on cookies and JavaScript for your browser.

Javascript is enabled but I have Cookies from third parties and advertisers blocked. Is this the problem?

When I looked at upgrading Safari and followed the "Download Safari" button, there's no download button on the page I'm taken to, just a description of Safari. Apple - Safari - Browse the web in smarter, more powerful ways.

Anyway, I'm getting tired of the spinning ball when I use Safari. Any suggestions? (and, I've only started using it again because of needing gmail and I don't want it open when I'm doing my normal stuff on Firefox. Gmail is for work only.)

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Major Telcos are attempting to raise prices of internet in Canada

I copy and pasted the article:

share it.

New move blocks Canadians from affordable Internet alternatives, in attempt to force independent providers to raise prices in line with Shaw’s recent steep price hike

January 8, 2015 – Reports indicate that Shaw is attempting to abuse their control of key Internet infrastructure to artificially increase Internet prices for Canadians. Teksavvy CEO Marc Gaudrault posted on DSL Reports that Shaw is trying to force independent ISPs to pay a whopping 87.9% increase to access Canada’s Internet networks. The move comes right on the heels of Shaw’s unpopular Internet price hikes which forces Shaw subscribers to pay higher rates or accept slower speeds.

The pricing changes could make access costs nearly double for smaller ISPs. Community-backed OpenMedia.ca sees this as an attempt to block Canadians from the few affordable alternatives they have. Right now, large incumbent telecom providers like Shaw control 90% of the residential broadband market. However, Shaw’s proposed 87.9% rate hike still needs to be approved by the CRTC.

“Canadians should be outraged that Shaw is trying to abuse their power to crank up Internet prices across the board” says OpenMedia.ca Campaigns Manager Josh Tabish. “Canadians are already paying some of the highest prices in the industrialized world for service, and speeds have fallen far behind our global counterparts. And this at a time when Shaw’s customers just faced a 10% price hike – after the company reported record profits in the last quarter.”

Tabish continued: “Not content with hiking prices for their own customers, Shaw is now trying to force customers of alternative indie providers to pay more too. This is the type of treatment Canadians can expect until decision-makers at the CRTC change the outdated rules that allow telecom giants to block us from affordable services. We’ve seen synchronized price hikes from the likes of Bell, Telus, and Rogers – but this really takes the cake. Shaw is clearly trying to jack up prices, not just for their customers but everywhere they can.”

OpenMedia.ca recently presented the perspective of over 30,000 citizens at a crucial CRTC hearing designed to determine whether powerful telecom incumbents will be allowed to continue blocking Canadians from affordable, independent, high-speed Internet services.

OpenMedia.ca has laid out crowdsourced policy plans for both wired and wirelesstelecom service that aim to ensure Canada can catch up to its global counterparts. Canadians are speaking out to call on the CRTC to listen to citizens instead of Big Telecom lobbyists at http://ift.tt/1qiO2Lw

About OpenMedia.ca

OpenMedia.ca is an award-winning community-based organization that safeguards the possibilities of the open Internet. We work toward informed and participatory digital policy by engaging hundreds of thousands of people in protecting our online rights.

Through campaigns such as StopTheMeter.ca and StopSpying.ca, OpenMedia.ca has engaged over half-a-million Canadians, and has influenced public policy and federal law.

About OpenMedia’s telecom campaigns

OpenMedia.ca has campaigned for years for action to improve choice and lower prices in Canada’s cell phone market. Early in 2012 OpenMedia.ca launched a campaign decrying the price-gouging poor customer service and lack of choice in the cell phone market at StopTheSqueeze.ca.

OpenMedia.ca then highlighted Canadians’ Cell Phone Horror Stories in a crowdsourced submission to the CRTC, and released a citizen-driven report entitled ‘Time for an Upgrade’ detailing their findings and recommendations. This citizen pressure resulted in a broadly positive new set of customer-friendly rules for wireless companies – national rules that reign in punitive three-year contracts, make it easier to switch to a new affordable provider, and impose caps on data roaming fees.

After Seeing This, You're Gonna REALLY Want A Macintosh Neue

Sure, it’s just a fan made concept and there’s almost no way Apple will actually turn around and start selling these bad boys, but wow, is the Macintosh Neue just incredible looking. It pays perfect homage to the original 1984 Macintosh while adding a whole lot of 2015 style to it. The end combination is something that’s perfectly retro but still very suitable as a modern computer.

Can't access/ See, iTunes Store ???

Good Day all

I tried to access the iTunes Store last night and again this morning, but for some strange reason all I get is a blank page!

It goes through the motions, I log on, select the store - blank. All other aspects of ITunes appears to function normally.

I had purchased the Little Dorit series over the holidays and was in the process of downloading each episode - only have 4 episodes to go, but now I can't even see anything on the site.

Anyone else have this problem?

question about performance with buying a new iMac

hello all,

I am not really up on tech specs, performance etc...

I currently own a 2011 iMac with the following specs:

- 27" 2.7GHz Intel Core i5

- 16GB 1333 MHz DDR3

- AMD Radeon HD 6770M 512MB

- 1TB HD

I am thinking of buying a new iMac with these specs:

- 27" 3.5 GHz

- 8 GB 1600 MHZ DDR3

-1 TB Fusion

- NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780M

my current is not terrible but it can get a little sluggish once in a while so my question is will I notice a significant performance increase with the new IMac?

I use my iMac for home / and work with the following programs:

- Outlook 2013 (parallels 10)

- word / excel for mac

- Daylite

- Eye TV

- iTunes for home library

-Skype

- Safari

- Evernote

thanks in advance for any feedback.

Pop up will not go away

My cousins 24 iMac running mountain lion, not sure why update, has a pop up in Safari from something called vr2help.net. Restarts do not help and googling brings up nothing. It is saying they might have a Trojan, an obvious hoax as it says windows detected it. The problem is i have no idea how to get rid of it. Any suggestions?

Ipod troubles

My wife re-discovered the iPod and asked me to add some new music, easy I thought.

So I connected it to the MacBook and dragged some downloaded music across from iTunes to the iPod in Finder. When done I double clicked the iPod in Finder and there were the new tunes.

However I was unable to find the new tunes to play on the iPod, again connected the iPod to the MacBook and the tunes show.

What am I doing wrong?

Why can't I post an add? Tried to contact ehMac with no response.

Hello Everyone:

I have tried to post an add for a 15" lampshade g4 without success. Is there a reason I wouldn't have the "permissions" to do this?

I tried to send an email to ehMac (over a week ago) with no success. Please let me know how to get up and running or who to contact so I can use ehMac as a preferred avenue over Kijiji.

Thank you for your help / suggestions. :)

For Sale ElevationDock 2 - $60

I bought this for my iPhone 5, and it's a fantastic dock. Unfortunately, it's too narrow to fit my iPhone 6 with a case. It will fit an iPhone 6 with the Apple cases, or a similarly thin case, but not much more. It will not fit an iPhone 6+.

Mine is silver, and comes with the NanoPad (added to later shipments) to hold it securely to almost any smooth surface. Effortless to remove your phone - don't need to hold down the dock or stop it from moving.

A Pages5 Letterhead question

In Pages 5, I’d like to design a letterhead that limits the first Section to a single page with a unique header and footer. When the user starts a second page a new section is automatically created with a different header and footer. Is this possible in Pages 5? How can I do this?

Appreciated.

Shatner, steampunk motorbike, x-country USA road trip

William Shatner to cross U.S. on Rivet, a custom steampunk motorcycle

In a move worthy of Captain Kirk himself, William Shatner has started a company to create custom futuristic steampunk motorcycles — and will ride his own machine from Chicago to Los Angeles later this year to promote the brand.

Shatner posted a link to the new company's website on his Facebook page.

"Excited about my partnership with American Wrench in forming Rivet Motors," the post reads. "This is the cycle of the future."

iOS 8 adoption: 68%

Don't think this would be of any news to anyone. This iOS 8 adoption has been pretty slow. I know I've not make the jump yet, but also because I'm still using a 4s which has been a friendly partner to that OS.

68% does seem low considering they always crowed about the near complete adoption of new OSes in the past.

But the funnier story might the Android adoption of Lollipop. 👀

No One Is Using Google's Massive Android Update

wow. It's been abut 6 weeks and no activity. LOL.

Having said that much, i'm actually looking for an Android phone for testing. Any suggestion?

(Return of the) 12" MacBook Air Retina/

No love for 12" MacBook Air Retina? Surprised I've not seen any chatter here about this news.

Quote:

Apple is preparing an all-new MacBook Air for 2015 with a radically new design that jettisons standards such as full-sized USB ports, MagSafe connectors, and SD card slots in favor of a markedly thinner and lighter body with a higher-resolution display.

Interesting specs - although they do say that they may change:

1 USB Type-C port.

Apparently very thin.

I need to see this before making the call. And I do hope they add some USB ports in there. I don't want this 12" to be too thin - and have this iPhone 6 bending debacle again. That would be funny though.

Thoughts? Anyone looking fwd to this? Again, as I chatted about before, i felt the Air family needed a refresh.

Hope that holds true.

H!

iTunes price hikes

Happy new year everybody..

The theory is that Canadian dollar and Euro have declined significantly against the US dollar. BUT, Why are we using the US dollar as a benchmark to what we pay in Canada or the Euro zone?

We live in Canada, and earn our income in Canadian dollars, and so we should be paying for products and services accordlingly.

Plus I can't recall them reducing the prices a few years back when the US dollar was declining, why start now? will they reduce the prices again if the CAD went back up to par?

Anybody here who buys stuff from the google playstore? I'd like to compare how google is handling this to what's apple is doing.

Wanted To Buy Antenna cable for G4 Imac

Hi all, I have a G4 iMac that I finally got working again but there's a problem. Long ago when I bought it I got an airport card for it and impatience got the best of me and I broke the small centre pin off the lead. Now I want to use the iMac again and need the wifi working. I am hoping someone has a spare antenna cable for it so I can fix it one and for all. Thanks for any help you can offer.

I just received a letter in the mail, denying my request for an additional credit card because I already have one with that company. I checked and someone applied for the card using my name. Can anyone fill me in on how a fraudster could potentially benefit from having a card issued in my name and sent to my home address?

When a printer really dies...

When a printer really dies I guess it's really dead. ;)

Our old HP PSC 1510 All-in-One started making a few small noises yesterday, almost as if it was trying to clean its printheads, but even smaller noises, and then ALL its lights started flashing and none of them would respond, not even its power button.

I've tried all the suggested resetting stuff multiple times, but no change. Its power supply is producing power according to my test meter and I've even reset it according to HP's site, and others.

There is just no response at all other than all the lights flashing. So I presume that when a printer gets to such state, then it's truly dead!

And it seems that it truly is DEAD and not like the Monty Python parrot routine and not just sleeping. ;) :D

Just curious as I've never experienced a printer to just up and die on its own, and not even being used, just in the middle of the day. Or is that how they sometimes just die??

What Is Going On Here With Carbon Copy Cloner?

A friend has a 20" iMac 2008 running 10.6.8 and is incredibly slow. He brought it over to me to see if I could have a look. First thing I want to do is clone the HD using CCC which I own, but when ever I download it so I can install it on this machine I get what appears to me to be the old can't run symbol for PPC. See screen shot below. WTH?

Any ideas why this machine would be doing that? I am stuck to clone it and I do not want to reinstall SL without a back up clone.

Specs 20" iMac 2.4 Ghz core 2 duo with 1 GB of DDR2 SD RAM (RAM may be the speed issue, only 1 GB, I didn't think Apple sold anything with that little RAM, yikes)

Likely more RAM would solve a lot of this speed issue.

Time for Apple to license its OS to other manufacturers again

Power Computing Corporation - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Remember when Power Computing was selling more powerful Mac clones at a lower price than anything Apple had to offer?

Given the current offerings from Apple, those days should return. Retina MacBooks should not be called Pro models. MacBooks have the edge on battery life, otherwise gaming computers laptops like Alienware blow them away in performance and have a coolness about them the Macbook does not come close to.

Workstation laptops like the Dell Precision series Dell Precision M6800 Workstation Details | Dell and companies like Sager Sager Custom Laptops have options and configurations that the Macbook Retina does not come close to. A Pro model should have real Pro graphics cards in it, not an outdated gaming video card.

The Macbook Pro has its place in the market, but no configuration that I am interested in. I want a real workhorse, and a non reflective bigger screen, and real expandability. How about an Intel Pismo? I have no interest in a garbage can clone that calls itself a Pro model. Give me a tower please.

If other companies have the opportunity to take this on, hopefully they can make their equipment boot OS X 10.6 and have drivers for current hardware. Then we don't have to get stuck with OS X that gets worse with each new version. Or come out with their own modifications to the OS.

Since Apple went Intel and became windows bootable I have ignored the world of windows and the hardware available for it. I just took it for granted that Apple was offering the best of the best. The last few years I have been waiting putting off upgrading my Apple hardware, because I did not want to have to use OS X 10.8 or 10.9. Given what a troublesome lemon Yosemite 10.10 is, how Apples once very good apps also just get worse and worse, and how much better the PC hardware and software selection is, why stay with Apple anymore?
