Streaming from atv 1 to iPhone in car

Hi guys

Looking for some advice.

I have an old iPhone 4s in my car that plugs into a Philips dual view setup with 2 head rest monitors for the kids in the back. Works great. Except space is limited on my iPhone.

I've got some extra hardware.. I was thinking I'd be able to use an old aTV 1 with 160gb storage and somehow share the content to my iPhone via AirPlay? Then allow me to push it to my dual screens?

I've got 2 atv 1st gen, time capsule dual band, airport express 1st gen, have hotspot teathering via my note 3 ..

Ideas are welcome!

Apple Music

So now that Apple Music is out and available to Canada on day one, how many here on ehMac are giving it a try? I updated my iPhone and signed up for the 3 month trial immediately. I was very surprised to see the pricing be $9.99 and $14.99 in Canada, I thought they would adjust for the exchange rate.

Happy Pre-Canada Day

When I was living in St. John's, NL, I used to ring in Canada Day from there, since the rising sun first touches Canada there, and there was always fine Canada Day celebration at dawn up atop Signal Hill. Since I am no longer in St. John's, NL, but here in Lunenburg, NS, I still might be the most easterly ehMacLander. So, keeping with tradition, and just in case there is someone further east than I am who is active in this thread, I shall wish you all a Happy Pre-Canada Day. May it be filled with good health, happiness and an appreciation that we live in Canada, a nation "strong and free". Paix, mes amis.

Note: The first two pictures are of Cabot Tower atop Signal Hill in a typical early morning fog at sunrise, and the other picture is of the Cape Spear light house at dawn. Cape Spear is the furthest easterly point in North America, and that spot would get the first rays of the rising sun at dawn on Canada Day ........... or any other day.

iMovie vs FCPX for separate audio

Once upon a time I had FC express and iMovie hadn't been dumbed down...

But hey-ho move on with the times :D

So... I'm a man of simple needs and simple brain. I would love to stick to iMovie because the learning curve is much flatter and I don't have that much time. Plus the $300.

Like many people I shoot DSLR + separate high quality audio. So far my workflow has been like this:

- Import clips + audio files
- Roughly align clips in the time line, in the right order/duration with lots of lose ends for later trimming
- Align audio files below the clips
- Synchronise the sound manually using the wave forms/claps (I know FCPX can synch automatically)
- Extract the original audio and throw it away.

At this point TROUBLE STARTS...

Although the sound file is in theory anchored to the clip, it is only the case if I move the whole clip around. If I want to trim anything, the audio 'doesn't follow' and gets immediately out of synch.

I have tried to select both the video and the audio: FAIL
I have tried to push the audio file back into the 'blue' zone so that it replaces the original audio: FAIL

Therefore...

- Is my only hope FCPX Obi Wan or is there a Way  ?
- If I splurge on FCPX will this definitely work ?

Thanks

PS: I can't get a trial of FCPX anymore - have used one and let it run its clock without trying to learn it

Annoying emails... safe to unsubscribe?

At work we get a lot of SEO type people from India offering their services. We have not asked or requested this and it is obviously spam. At the bottom of the email it will always say something along these lines:

If you did not wish to receive this, please reply with "unsubscribe" in the subject line.
Disclaimer: This is an advertisement and a promotional mail strictly on the guidelines of CAN-SPAM Act of 2003. We have clearly mentioned the source mail-id of this mail and the subject lines and they are in no way misleading in any form. We have found your mail address through our own efforts on the web search and not through any illegal way. If you find this mail unsolicited, please reply with "unsubscribe" in the subject line and we will take care that you do not receive any further promotional mail…

Is it actually safe to reply and "unsubscribe"? Or will I be confirming that the email is active and get even more annoying emails? The email address always changes, so I even though I mark as spam, they get through. I have unsubscribed to promotional emails before, but they were legit companies. Do I just keep ignoring these or can I safely unsubscribe?

R.I.P. Chris Squire

Sadly, one of my all time favourite bass players has passed on. Chris Squire, the bassist and co-founder of the progressive rock band Yes who recently announced he had leukemia, has died, according to a statement from his band members on Sunday. He was 67.

He had a style that you knew it was him just by listening, and as I was a bass player I was amazed at how he could play and carry that Rickey through the many concerts were he and his Fellow Yes band members put their music through its paces .... Very skilled and extremely inventive ... He will be missed.

How thorough is the Refurbishment process?

I'm considering making the leap from my 2010 17" MBP to the new 13" MBA.

My understanding is that the new 13"MBA is about 2x as powerful, which is more than enough for me.

I'm just trying to figure out if it makes sense that I should wait until a refurb model comes up online. I know they're totally fine, but I've always enjoyed that fresh feeling of being the first one to open the computer.

Any thoughts on the refurb store? Why would someone not buy refurb ever?

Siri and 911

Regina police getting many Siri-generated 911 calls
Regina police say they're getting lots of unwanted 911 calls from Siri, Apple's "intelligent personal assistant".

People with iPhones use Siri to do things like order pizza or get answers to questions.

However, on the weekend, police received an unusually high number of 911 hangup calls to their communications centre.

In just two hours on Sunday morning, 114 hang up 911 calls came in.

They believe the calls came in response to a widely circulated social media message telling people to ask Siri about "9/11" (pronounced nine-eleven) — a reference to the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks in the United States.

"The messages on Twitter, Facebook and other social media prompt people with a teaser like, 'Say 9/11 into Siri and you'll be amazed', or 'When you say 9/11 to Siri, her response is hilarious'," a news release from the police said.

What happens next is not hilarious, however. Siri dials 911, accessing a 911 communications officer.

Many of the callers, when they hear a live operator on the line asking about the emergency, panic and hang up.

iPad -vs- iPad Mini

I was once sold on the iPad, but more recently i've been wondering about the iPad Mini. I really do mostly reading on my iPad and my early love for games on the iPad has subsided, and the same for many of the music apps.

I do watch tons of youtube (tech videos/talks), and that's really it. I have a 4th gen iPad and use a iPad Air everyday at work (love the size diff). But what should be keeping me from a mini over an Air other than size?? Trying to figure this out.

Any takers on this one?

Thanks.

replacement iPhone keeps going offline

My iPhone is getting repaired so the Genius Bar gave me a replacement iPhone 5.

It keeps going offline and then reconnecting at random intervals which I can't figure out why.

It'll go from "Searching" to finding my carrier, to seeing bars denoting it's on WiFi to 3G.

Any ideas why this is happening when I'm just sitting at work or home and it randomly decides to go on/offline?

Is it time to upgrade Late 2009 27" iMac?

My trusty 27" iMac is starting to lag performance wise (beach balls, slow to open programs). I'm willing to put $300-$400 into some upgrades (SSD?), but don't know what kind of ROI I can expect performance-wise. Looking at newer gen iMacs but having a tough time justifying the investment in a new unit unless it brings significant performance improvements. Any suggestions on how to breathe new life into my 2009 machine?

Here's what I'm running as my daily work machine:
Late 2009 27" iMac
2.8 Ghz i7
12 GB Ram
1 TB HD (about 30% full)
OSX 10.8.5

Primary tasks include graphic design (Photoshop, InDesign Adobe CC apps) and some light video editing in iMovie etc.

some Notes gone, some not after getting replacement phone

I synced my iPhone 5 to my computer, and had some things in iCloud such as contacts and Notes, so I thought. I dropped my phone into Apple to get repaired so they gave me a loaner iPhone5 which has been a pain in the @#! to use.

It takes forever and a few tries to get on my WiFi or LTE, but finally gets there.

But the main problem is, I don't have all of my Notes! I either didn't sync them properly or somehow I don't have the Settings correct to retrieve them.

Is there a way to restore this phone to have everything (Apps, Notes, etc) from a backup a few versions ago?

Are there Settings I didn't set properly other than what I've already done here:
iCloud: Notes are ON
Notes: iCloud is chose, but I've also tried my email accounts and don't see the missing notes
Notes App: All Notes is chosen

On recycling.

So, this whole recycling is good for the environment, blah, blah, blah...

I bought into the mantra years ago, my bride & I were recycling before she was my bride, back in the early 90's. Didn't have the blue bins then, we hauled all of it down to a local centralized depot once every couple of weeks or so. However, the more I read about it, the more BS I come across.

American recycling is stalling, and the big blue bin is one reason why

Quote:

The District, Baltimore and many counties in between are contributing millions annually to prop up one of the nation’s busiest facilities here in Elkridge, Md. — but it is still losing money. In fact, almost every facility like it in the country is running in the red. And Waste Management and other recyclers say that more than 2,000 municipalities are paying to dispose of their recyclables instead of the other way around.

Here's the link to Apple's Support Page, where you can enter your Serial # to confirm eligibility: http://ift.tt/1L6QNy8

Apple offering free replacement 3TB hard drives in 27-inch iMacs
Apple has launched a replacement program for defective 3TB hard drives used in its flagship 27-inch iMacs for the 2013 season. The offer is being made across the world as Apple has found that the hard drives can fail under specific circumstances.

The company will be replacing the affected units free of charge at its retail stores. Alternatively, customers can visit an Apple Authorised Service Provider to have the work done.

As the International Business Times reports, Apple is contacting owners of computers that are eligible for the replacement. People who bought a 27-inch iMac with a 3TB hard drive between December 2012 and September 2013 will be emailed details of how to get the faulty unit replaced.

Chrome listening in!

Old news for most of us but a good read nonetheless.
https://www.privateinternetaccess.co...ense-in-depth/

The last paragraph or three really nails it. Remember Google saves everything forever.

Quote:

Early last decade, privacy activists practically yelled and screamed that the NSA’s taps of various points of the Internet and telecom networks had the technical potential for enormous abuse against privacy. Everybody else dismissed those points as basically tinfoilhattery – until the Snowden files came out, and it was revealed that precisely everybody involved had abused their technical capability for invasion of privacy as far as was possible.

Perhaps it would be wise to not repeat that exact mistake. Nobody, and I really mean nobody, is to be trusted with a technical capability to listen to every room in the world, with listening profiles customizable at the identified-individual level, on the mere basis of “trust us”.

Privacy remains your own responsibility.

It never f******ng stops! (Gun violence USA) (apologies to rgray)

Dylann Roof, suspected gunman, caught after 9 churchgoers fatally shot in Charleston
A tip from a childhood friend helped police identify the suspected gunman in a shooting at a historic black church in Charleston, S.C., that left nine people dead, police say.

The suspect, Dylann Storm Roof, 21, of Lexington, S.C., was arrested during a traffic stop late Thursday morning in Shelby, N.C., and will be taken back to South Carolina.

* * *

The pastor of the church, state Senator Clementa Pinckney, was among those killed.
(CBC)

Charleston church shooting: Hate crime, gun crime? Does it matter?
Earlier today, U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch declared that acts such as the mass murder of worshippers in a black church in Charleston, allegedly by a man fond of white supremacist symbols, "have no place in a civilized society."

She's right, of course. But a reasonable case can be made that South Carolina is less a civilized society than a predator's paradise.

In a civilized society, people have some assurance that laws, and the agents who enforce those laws, will shield them from predators, protecting the weak being the essence of civilization.

But even leaving aside its ugly history of race relations — the Confederate flag still flies in front of the state capital in Columbia — South Carolina, like many other U.S. states, is a place where the love of guns trumps the protection of innocents.

* * *

Dylann Storm Roof, the prime suspect in Wednesday's slaughter.

There he stands in his Facebook picture, posing in a bog somewhere, the flags of apartheid South Africa and the white-ruled former Rhodesia stitched ostentatiously onto his jacket.

News photo of the month, that one.

* * *

One of the first news organizations to report Roof's birthday present was the Charleston Post and Courier, a newspaper that has a Pulitzer Prize to its credit.

On the front page today, just over the headline CHURCH ATTACK KILLS 9, it featured a peel-off advertisement for "Ladies Night" at the ATP Gun Shop and Range: "$30 gets you everything!" Gun, ammo, even a souvenir T-shirt.

The newspaper at least had the grace to apologize for that.

* * *

Meanwhile, at the White House, the president was raising his civilized voice, once again.

"I've had to make comments like this too many times," Barack Obama told reporters, rather plaintively. He has spoken after mass murders at least six times during his presidency.

"At some point as a country, we have to reckon with the fact that this type of mass violence does not happen in other advanced countries."

* * *

Obama went on to say that "it is in our power to do something about it."

But it's actually not in his power to do anything about it. He tried, after the massacre of schoolchildren in Newtown, Conn., in 2012.

The country was outraged. Most Americans agreed with him. Then the National Rifle Association started making some calls and Congress punked out.

Why would anyone think it'll be any different this time?
(CBC)

And of course, you can always count on the NRA to make a calming, thoughtful comment when incidents such as these occur...

NRA board member blames deceased pastor for the deaths in the Charleston shooting
A National Rifle Association board member has blamed the political position of South Carolina State Senator — and pastor — Clementa Pinckney for the church massacre in Charleston that left nine people dead.

* * *

NRA board member Charles Cotton has said that if Senator Pinckney had not voted to oppose legislation that would have allowed guns in South Carolina churches, “eight of his church members…might be alive,” Politico reported.

It never f*****g stops!!!

I suppose the fact that it never stops - SPAM, that is - tells us that some percentage of the population is actually stupid enough or, to be more generous, naive enough to respond to sh*t such as the below item.

After all, it is a basic defining principle pf psychology that sentient beings do not continue to do things for which they get no reward. No matter how twisted that "reward" might be, or how difficult it may be to construe, there is always something to encourage them to continue.

I received this today.

How dumb or gullible is the sender to expect a positive return from this?? Although the grammar is not atrocious by todays standards there are rhetorical, procedural and logical holes that a blind man could drive what used to be called a 'convoy' through.

Help me modify Automator script for Yosemite!

I have a script that has worked on previous OSs, but has recently stopped. I was wondering if someone could help make modifications to the script so it will work on Yosemite please.

The function/purpose of the script:

I have a folder with many (500+) files in it.

I have a text file with 30 filenames corresponding to the contents of the folder, each on a new line.

e.g.

A.jpg
B.jpg
C.jpg etc.

The script is to copy only these 30 files into a new folder.

This is so that I don't have to manually select and drag them over. Especially handy when I have 200 files to choose from the folder.

From what I can tell, it's having a problem matching the filenames in the text file to the filenames in the folder.

I have attached a screen grab for those that are uneasy downloading the file.

before erasing all data: how to save contacts to SIM

I'm a bit outdated with how Contacts are saved on iPhone 5s. When I do a backup, are they saved that way so when I restore I don't lose them? Are all Contacts saved on my SIM?

I have to visit the Apple Store later today and backed up my phone last night, but haven't erased it yet which I'll do before I get to the store. But first, I want to make sure all of my Contacts can be retrieved.

Tips?

For Sale Need these PPC Macs GONE!

Anyone interested?
I need to get rid of a G5 iMac 17" running 10.5.8 and a G4 17" flowerpot iMac running 10.4.4, a Wind Tunnel *ahem* MDD G4 (Dual 800Mhz I think?) and a graphite G4 (with a Sonnet 1.2Ghz Processor upgrade).
The towers work, but have had their Hard Drives removed. With enough interest I can easily get them back in running condition.

I need these gone. Come grab EVERYTHING for $50 or it all gets tossed.

Wow, Repair at no cost!!!!

Took my almost four year old 27 inch iMac in for repair yesterday. It looked like the video card was not functioning properly.

Got a call a few minutes ago. Yes, the video card was the problem. It was replaced. I asked what the cost would be. The answer was no cost. Apparently, the video card I had, had an extended warranty up to four years.

Wow!!!

My MacBook Pro seems very slow

I have a:
MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid 2012)
Processor: 2.9 GHz Intel Core i7
Ram:8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
Intel HD Graphics 4000 1024 MB

When I run benchmark tests it seems to preform to the specs that it is supposed to, however, it always seems painfully slow. Opening a new window; opening an email; typing into search bars, or opening up something and starting to type-it can't even keep up with my mediocre typing speed. I have to wait for the beach ball to spin for a few seconds and then it catches up, sometimes missing some of the text I typed when I was waiting. my internet is fast so downloads are quick once they start, but there is always quite a delay when flipping from one page to another.

It just seems like it has to think for 10-60 seconds before it decides to switch tasks, then when it does switch it does the task pretty quickly.

People have said that I have to many windows or programs open, but I am not really a hard-core user now, I multi-task a lot and usually have a number of programs open. I typically always have safari, mail, omni-focus, pages and/or numbers. then iPhoto and iTunes always open when the phone is plugged in so they are often open then maybe some random things....
- because I jump from various project to another, I am not good at opening a program and closing it, because 10 min later I am opening it again.

I used to be a busy graphic designer ( I have been using Macs for about 30years), and would have QuarkXPress, photoshop, illustrator and email/web programs open and be putting together large magazines, and editing photos etc, all open at the same time. And although processing times were a lot slower, I am sure the 'drag' time was better than it is now - on now obsolete old computers with much, much much less horse-power.

I do have a lot of emails, and don't clean it out or archive old ones, So I get that that could slow down while using the mail program, when I did archive a bunch a while back It didn't seem to help much.

I also know that switching to a solid state hard-drive would make the start-up quicker etc. but how much would it really affect my situation.

So I am looking for any advice that you can give me. It seems like a fast/expensive computer for the basic stuff that I am doing, so I can't justify a newer faster one. So any other options for speeding it up would be helpful.

thanks
ryan

For Sale Minaal Carry-On Bag made famous on Kickstarter!

Do you travel frequently and want the ultimate carry-on bag that holds EVERYTHING? This bag is incredible at how much it holds and how organized it is. It can be worn as a backpack, or the straps can be zipped away and it can be used as a duffle! It has a rain cover stashed in the bottom and rolls up into a ball back into the bag when not in use. The top or "lid" is the main compartment, and it holds an ASTONISHING amount of stuff. There's plenty of space in the rear compartment for your laptop, passport, keys, anything that needs to be neat and tidy. It has compression straps on the sides, and a chest strap.

Check out the link for more info, and for videos on the specs and just how much this bag can hold!

Carry-on Bag | Minaal

I only used this bag once, and paid close to $300 Canadian for it. It currently sells for $299 USD on the Minaal website. Asking $200 OBO.

Office 2011 for Mac update

On another site, I learned that Microsoft's Office's 14.4.1 update for Macs will or might solve the recent problem I'm having with the cursor disappearing in Word 2011 documents. I've downloaded the update, but it won't install. It's telling me that "A version of the software required to install this update was not found on this volume." The only prerequisite appears to be that I have OX 10.5.8 or later installed. Well, I have 10.10.2, and this blasted update still won't install. Nor does the Microsoft auto update work for me, either. It hasn't since I upgraded to Mavericks and still doesn't work in Yosemite. Does anybody know how I can work around this or at least install the 14.4.1 service pack?

Many thanks in advance for your help!

The Alberta NDP Thread

Thought I'd put up a thread to keep track of the pinko commie bastards. ;) (For easy access & future referral...)

Oh, look who Rachel hired to be Chief of Staff for our Energy Minister!

Ezra Levant: Meet Alberta’s new colonial chiefs

Quote:

A Toronto anti-oilsands activist – still registered as an anti-oil lobbyist – is now running Alberta’s energy department.
What could possibly go wrong?

Not only that, but:

Quote:

There are twelve ministers in the Alberta cabinet, including Notley herself, each with a chief of staff. And ten of those chiefs are, like Mitchell, NDP activists from other provinces, many of whom will commute each week to Alberta from Vancouver, Toronto, or elsewhere.
M'bold.

Nice. First off, any guesses who foots the travel bill?

Second:

Quote:

There is something weirdly colonial about non-residents being sent in to run a province to which they have few or no ties. It feels as if the NDP believes Alberta lacks people with talent and judgment to govern themselves. It feels nepotistic – highly paid consolation prizes for failed NDP activists from other campaigns.

Like Nathan Rotman. He worked on Olivia Chow’s unsuccessful campaign for Toronto mayor. Now he’s the chief of staff to Alberta’s Finance Minister.

Was there no-one in Alberta with any financial background? No socially conscious businessman, or even an NDP-friendly professor or think tank economist? Four million Albertans, but not one who understands Alberta’s fiscal situation better than an Olivia Chow door-knocker?
M'bold.

Yep...

Further:

Wildrose charges NDP energy minister's top staffer was anti-pipeline lobbyist

Quote:

The Wildrose Party says it’s a troubling sign that the NDP energy minister’s top staffer was registered as a federal lobbyist for an organization opposed to pipeline projects proposed to ship Alberta oilsands crude.

Randomly having access to a specific website

Hello there.
Here the deal. Recently, at home, I almost always get a "can not connect host" error message in Safari, FF, Chrome when accessing a specific website (videotron.ca). It's strange because a) I've never encounter this problem with any other website (yet) and b) sometimes (rarely), it just work on the first try (for a few minutes)!

I'm on WIFI (but I tried hardwired and same thing happen), on OS X Yosemite (iMac) and Maverick (MBP) with a d-link. I can connect to the website with on my iPhone and I can ping the website with both machines. Something tells me it's the router but I tried (several time) to reset it with no luck and even by bypassing the router altogether (hard wiring with the modem directly).

Anyone got a idea of what's going on or what could be the cause and how could I solve this issue? Could it be something with the DSN? Thanks

Elon Musk — You're such a joke now

Has anybody noticed how increasingly desperate Elon Musk is sounding? He fully acknowledges $4.9 BILLION in government funding and subsidies, but doesn't appear to have much to show for it except high-priced (subsidized) sports cars, an underperforming battery and a few stabs at space flight.

Elon Musk: - LA Times

Quote:

"What is remarkable about my companies is that they have been successful despite having such a tiny incentive from the government relative to our competitors," Musk told The Times.
Emphasis mine.

Quote:

"Tesla could be profitable right now if we went into low-growth mode and we just served premium buyers," he said. "The reason we are not profitable is because we are making massive investments to create an affordable long-range electric car."

Tesla's only current car, the Model S sport sedan, typically sells for about $100,000.
So let me get this straight. Tesla would be profitable if it sold cheaper cars? Right.....

Is it worth upgrading her to 4 or 6GB of RAM and an SSD, or should we just save up for a new laptop for her?

CBC Host Evan Solomon Fired

Yep, that good old honest and upright institution that is CBC TV.

Quote:

CBC host Evan Solomon fired after Star investigation finds he took secret cut of art deals

CBC journalist facilitated sales of art to wealthy Canadians he dealt with in his job — including one buyer who had no idea Solomon was collecting a commission.

CBC has fired marquee host Evan Solomon after the Star reported that he was taking secret commission payments related to art sales involving people he dealt with as a host.

“I regret to inform you that CBC News has ended its relationship with Evan Solomon,” executive Jennifer McGuire said in a brief statement issued late Tuesday, a day after the Star presented the findings of its investigation to the network.

Solomon, 47, was the Ottawa-based host of Power and Politics on television and The House on CBC radio, and had been one of the people touted to replace Peter Mansbridge on The National when the veteran newsman retires.

The Star found Solomon had been brokering the sale of paintings and masks owned by a flamboyant Toronto-area art collector to rich and famous buyers. Solomon, in at least one case, took commissions in excess of $300,000 for several pieces of art and did not disclose to the buyer that he was being paid fees for introducing buyer and seller.

The CBC had taken Solomon off the air Monday pending an investigation “over the next couple of days.” That move came after the Star presented the CBC with the results of its probe of Solomon.

The network severed its relationship with Solomon on Tuesday without further explanation. McGuire, general manager and editor in chief of CBC News and Centres, said in the statement that the network would “be making announcements about the interim hosting of these programs in the next few days.”

Apple TV 3 - iPhoto Library Viewing without the Cloud?

Is there no longer a way to view your iPhoto pictures direct from within your home network without using the "Cloud". I don't want to use my bandwidth to send the pictures and video clips up to the cloud just so I can view them on my TV. I can still do this simply enough with a Media Stream to my non Apple devices, ie PS3 and Chromecast etc, without sending everything to the cloud.

I am using a 3rd Gen Apple TV with the latest OS for what its worth. I am a long time Apple devotee and I am less and less enamored by Cupertino as the years go on and things seemingly get dumbed down for the masses.

A Tragedy ‘For All Canadians’: Police Officer Shot Dead In Edmonton

Quote:

EDMONTON — A 35-year-old Edmonton Police Service officer in the hate crimes unit was shot to death in a southwest Edmonton suburb on Monday night, in an act city Police Chief Rod Knecht described as “a tragedy of unspeakable proportions.” A second officer was injured, but is expected to make a full recovery.

Knecht identified the officer who was killed as Const. Daniel Woodall, 35.

“His job was to protect all of us from harm, victimization, and criminal activity. We will forever be in his debt for his actions this evening,” said Knecht, speaking to reporters gathered at Edmonton Police Service headquarters early Tuesday morning. “But, of far greater importance, a wife is without a husband tonight and two young children are without a loving father. This is a tragedy of unspeakable proportions for the EPS, for the broader policing community and for all Canadians.”

Woodall had been with the EPS for eight years.

Knecht identified the injured officer as southwest division patrol Sgt. Jason Harley, 38, a 15-year member of the EPS.

Knecht said the shooting happened at about 8 p.m., when several officers came under fire while executing a warrant for criminal harassment at a home in the Callingwood area, around 182nd Street and 62A Avenue. Knecht said the shots were fired from inside the home as the officers attempted to enter the residence.

WWDC 2015: thoughts?

I did not watch the event, but I did skim through Apple.com which gave a blow by blow. Not a whole lot that made me go "wow". Two new features look great though, both which have been available in Windows for a while, the split screen for the iPad and snapping windows in OS X to the edge. Another Ontario Liberal Mess - UP service to Toronto

Union Pearson Express (UPX) opens to the public | Toronto Star

Trying to do the math. It's not adding up for couples- cheaper and faster, less headache to do limo service - door to door rather than dragging bags through TTC which is packed, always late.
Another Liberal mess up - only way it will be a success is if it fails. Then they drop prices to $11 each way
I am sticking to Valet parking - ParkNfly - $180 taxes in and my car is ready and running.. door to door in 40 mins..[ up to 14 days stay ] The train is in reality door to door 1.5 hours if your lucky.. Liberals love to lie that it is 25 mins.. [25mins train ride, 15 mins waiting for train, then 45 mins TTC ]

just my take on it.. as only possibly 8% of the population will take it.

The comedy of it all, on opening day; The TTC services was messed up and closed at a bloor st.. LOL [ the TTC couldn't find their way out of a tunnel if it was open on both ends with light pointing the way out. ]

Best way to utilize an SSD

I have a 27in 2009 iMac, I just installed a 2TB HD in it because my previous drive was failing. I just recently aquired a SSD drive....I was thinking of replacing the optical drive with the SSD.
I was looking into creating a fusion drive, but after reading eveything is seems a little more complicated. My 2TB drive has been partitioned to two 1TB drives. Could I use the one of the partitions with the SSD to create a fusion drive, or do I have to loose the partion?

the SSD is a 512GB, I was thinking of installing the OS on it, and wipe the 2TB drive, but if I install all my apps, I would like to put them on the 2TB drive and try and leave the SSD free. Can that be done?

Any thoughts on what you guys think I can best use this SSD would be greatlly appreciated.

airport express first time setup

MMm..boy, this stuff doesn't seem to end, do it?
Okay, here's what I have. It's an airport express 1st generation (802.11n, I guess)
and the model number is A 1284 (it's the model with 1 ethernet socket, usb, headphone jack, et al). I've been trying to set it up in Airport Utility on its own, but no. I have also an Airport Time capsule-no problem whatsoever. Sets up fine, works fine, plays fine with modem...can make wireless network A-OK.

This little piece of....sorry, little so-and-so (might be young'uns around) has been a pain, to put it nicely. I've tried getting it to show up and be configured in the latest version of Airport Utility only to find out that Yosemite , at least with Wifi, and for this, anyways, has done some things that way, when they really need to be this other way for it to work (IPv6 has to be set to Link-Local rather than Automatic-whatever that does), to at least get the darn thing to show up and be visible. I've tried countless time to configure this. It shows up under other wifi Devices, and Airport Utility sorta recognizes it, sometimes, and when I run the setup wizard, it works partways, then it tells me "an unexpected error occurred. Please try again later:" What that error was and how I fix it? Haven't a clue... so...going nuts here...thinking bad thoughts about this involving an M-80 and a lit match...you get the picture.....
(what, you're more nuts than usual?beejacon)'

thanks for any help, good ideas or suggestions. I think this is compatible with Yosemite
overall, but.........

Wanted To Buy Indigo iBook G3 CD/DVD drive/bezel and Apple Logo Leaf

I'm looking for any optical drive and or bezel that would fit into a clamshell iBook as well as the title leaf from the Apple logo from the lid.

I recently got a really good deal on a used indigo iBook G3. It functions amazingly but its missing the bezel for the cd-rom drive and the leaf from the Apple logo.

I'd prefer to get a matching coloured bezel and logo leaf... but graphite or even blueberry might do if nothing else is available.

I'd be willing to pay shipping and a adequate sum for these.

Something relatively local to the GTA is preferred.. but I'll also entertain shipping a bit further as well.

Thanks!

Home/Remote File Server

Since Dropbox no longer works I'm thinking of ways to et up my own little cloud. I'm thinking of a few ways and I'm not sure which is the best approach.

I could get a suitably powerful Mini or older Mac Pro and se them as a file server both on my local network and even remotely... But I'm not entirely sure thats the way to go or even how to serve up the files remotely....

or

I was looking at device that purpose built such as a WD My Cloud EX2 or EX4.... But again; I'm pretty sure the face UI has to run on a relatively modern Mac that can do 10.7 or so. But there must be a way to make this data accessible to say an iBook G4 or 12" PowerBook.. Maybe FTP? or AFP?

Any thoughts and ideas on how to achieve this would be greatly appreciated!

internet access going off and on

For the last few days I keep finding myself disconnecting from the internet and then reconnecting either automatically or after re-logging in (at coffee shop). I'll have all bars up in airport, click on my browser to open and get the message 'not connected' and I'll see that the bars are suddenly trying to find the connection.

Any insights would be greatly appreciated.

Glue for plastic feet

My 2011 Macbook Pro has lost one of its plastic feet pads off the bottom case. It is not lost, and I have it. The internal piece is still in the unit, I just want to know what glue is safe for sticking this back on. I see comments online that certain superglues can off gas and cause issues with electronics. Maybe they are being to cautious, but has anyone done this repair and can comment. Would you remove the bottom case or just do it while attached, I will be sure to use a very tiny amount of glue.

IPad and external GPS receiver

I bought the iPad4 without the cellular option, so have no GPS chips.

But since I drive a fair amount, towing a long trailer, I wanted a nav. system to avoid going off route - its often hard to turn a 50 foot rig around.

So I decided to get an external GPS (Dual XGPS150) and bluetooth it into the iPad and then run it with a TomTom app. When it works, I have a screen much bigger than any dedicated GPS device so its easy to navigate.

Dual has an App that checks the status of the XGPS, and that shows a full count of satellites with strong signals and also gives position, height and speed. So I know the XGPS is working properly and the iPad is receiving the location data.

But when I start the TomTom app, it shows "Weak GPS signals" and won't navigate. It always indicates where it is when I start the app - it simply doesn't move from there.

I have used it in the past and it did work, so I wonder if possibly an iOS update has caused this linking between the app and the external GPS signal to fail.

Has anybody experienced anything similar?

Cheers

Walt

Thunderbolt 3 to use USB-C Connector

Intel has just unveiled Thunderbolt 3. It will supposedly utilize a Type-C connector to support a 40 Gbps connection, thats 2x the speed of Thunderbolt 2 and about 4x the Speed of USB 3.1.

Looks like Apple really knew what they were doing using the USB-C as the only port on the new MacBook. It looks like we are getting closer to having just 1 connector that does EVERYTHING. This will also potentially be pretty confusing for most people at the start, but hopefully that will get ironed out quickly.

Intel admits USB-C is the connector of the future by adopting it for Thunderbolt 3 | The Verge

CND versus USD prices

I just compared Apple store CND prices to USD prices and had to do a double-take.

Buying Apple products in Canada is cheaper in Canadian dollars than it is buying in the USD. It's almost worth it for American's to buy Canadian Apple products.

I only looked at the MacBook Pro 15" as a sample. I took Canadian prices and adjusted to the American dollar. I found that it was slightly cheaper to buy Canadian.

E.g. RMBP 15" base model = $1999.00 USD

Convert that to Canadian is roughly = $2505.00 CND

A Canadian RMPB 15" base model = $2449.00 CND.

Alright so it's only $50 cheaper... and after exchange commission it's probably nil... but I just thought it was interesting to note.

This is news to me, I was always under the impression it was cheaper to buy products in the US.
