WWE Hall of Famer Roderick George Toombs, a.k.a. "Rowdy" Roddy Piper, passed away at his home in Hollywood, CA at the age of 61, according to TMZ Sports. According to the report, Piper died from cardiac arrest in his sleep on Thursday night. He was discovered today.(WrestlingInc)
Piper was diagnosed with cancer in 2006. He was scheduled to wrestle at the Survivor Series that year, teaming with Ric Flair, Arn Anderson, Sgt. Slaughter and Dusty Rhodes against the Spirit Squad, however he was replaced in the match by Ron Simmons. He stated in an interview with The Hillsboro Tribune last November that he was now cancer free.
"The cancer is gone as far as I know," Piper said. "I've passed the five-year mark. It's one of those things that haunts you a little bit, especially when you go as hard as I did. I'm doing OK, but about a year ago, I was driving home and I couldn't breathe and almost passed out. I was trying to ignore it, but I had a blood clot in my lung and spent some time in the hospital. I need to start being careful. I'm not sure we're invincible anymore."
DETROIT Fiat Chrysler will buy back from customers more than 500,000 Ram pickup trucks in the biggest such action in U.S. history as part of a costly deal with U.S. safety regulators to settle legal problems in about two-dozen recalls. The trucks, which are the company's top-selling vehicle, have defective steering parts that can cause drivers to lose control, and some previous repairs have been unsuccessful. So to get them off the roads, Fiat Chrysler agreed to the buyback, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Owners also have the option of getting them repaired, the agency said in documents released Sunday. |
Microsoft today is introducing a new application aimed at reducing the time it takes to check and respond to email while on your smartphone. With Send, as the app is called, the idea is to make email perform more like instant messaging, as it does away with more formal email constructs like the subject line, for example in favor of quicker, shorter messages that you can dash off in seconds.(TechCrunch)
This is not the first time a company has re-imagined mobile email as more of a mobile messaging client, or a text messaging-like service. A startup called Hop attempted this as well, with an app it first launched back in 2013. Another startup called MailTime also previously participated in the TechCrunch Disrupt Battlefield this past September.
The concept is intriguing, but has so far failed to resonate with a wide number of consumers who, today, often simply abandon email for simple communications, and instead use mobile messaging apps like Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp, or even just SMS or iMessage.
Tuesday's mild 4.0 earthquake in the San Francisco Bay Area could be a signal that a major destructive event will arrive within days, a U.S. government seismologist said Tuesday.(Digital Journal)
Research geophysicist Tom Brocher with the U.S. Geological Survey in Menlo Park, Calif., said Bay Area residents should be prepared for a major quake "any day now" because the 4.0-magnitude quake that struck Tuesday occurred on a known fault line that is overdue for a large temblor.
The past five major earthquakes on the fault have been about 140 years apart, and now were 147 years from that 1868 earthquake, so we definitely feel that could happen any time, Brocher said, according to CBS in San Francisco.

We keep a close eye on the Hayward Fault because it does sit in the heart of the Bay Area and when we do get a big earthquake on it, its going to have a big impact on the entire Bay Area, Brocher said.
Tuesday's shaker was felt as far south as Santa Cruz and as far east as Livermore, but was strongest in the East Bay and South Bay, the USGS said.
No, you haven't suddenly been transported back to the mid-1980s, somehow keeping your MacBook, iMac, iPad and iPhone in the process. A group of Apple IIgs fans at the Apple Pugetsound Program Library Exchange (A.P.P.L.E.) banded together to release the first update to their favorite computer in "22 years, 2 months, 2 days and 2 hours". The result? They were able to squash a lot of two-decade-old bugs and add some new features.(Release Notes: AppleWorldToday)
Canadian Geographic magazine has been published for 85 years by the Royal Canadian Geographic Society (RCGS), a self-described "iconic non-profit organization" founded in 1929. Through the years, the magazine has established a respected brand as a sober periodical with a mandate "to explore and celebrate Canada's natural and human wonders."(CanadaLandShow)
But according to several former employees, Canadian Geographic has, under its current publisher and governance, strayed from that mission. In a series of posts, we will examine the magazine itself, its corporate-sponsored educational products and its connections to power in Ottawa.

"I asked that my name be taken off the masthead, and soon after, I resigned," says Alan Morantz, former senior editor of Canadian Geographic magazine.
Morantz, who worked on contract at the magazine for over three years, says that management abandoned the editorial policy of identifying sponsored content with an article in its December 2012 issue about polar research.
The research being featured was an initiative of the Weston Foundation, who also sponsored the article, according to Morantz.
"Previously we would have labeled a feature like this 'Special Section, in partnership with the Weston Foundation,'" he recalls. "But the disclaimer was changed right before publication to 'Special Report on Northern Research.' You don't take money from a source," he tells CANADALAND, "and pass off the resulting work as journalism."
The archived version of the article on Canadian Geographic's website contains no disclaimer at all.

Author and magazine journalist Curtis Gillespie says he had a similar experience, after which, he tells CANADALAND, "I vowed never to have anything to do with Canadian Geographic ever again,....
....
Kurt Kadatz, a spokesperson for the Calgary Stampede, confirms to CANADALAND that the Stampede entered into a partnership with Canadian Geographic in 2012 that included "content in Cdn Geo."
Gillespie says he expressed concern about the arrangement, but was promised editorial independence.
He visited the Calgary Stampede Ranch, spoke to a livestock handler, a veterinarian, academics, and activists, and delivered a thoughtful piece that was generally sympathetic to the Stampede. He did however learn that the Stampede bred horses specifically to be used as bucking broncos. These horses were regularly culled; those that didn't buck wildly enough were "disposed of." Gillespie included the detail in his piece, "Rodeo under Scrutiny."
Apple users are under threat from an iPhone scam that sees them urged to call a number and pay up to £50 for a fix - or all their details will be stolen, it can be revealed. The issue - which appears to have started in the US at least nine months ago but has since spread to Britain - sees a crash report message pop up while users are on the Safari internet app. The message appearing on the screen says: 'Warning iOS Crash Report - Due to a third party application in your phone, iOS crashed. Contact support for an immediate fix. |
Users are then told to call one of a list of numbers - 1-800-480-4170 in the US or 0800 279 6211 or 0800 652 4895 in the UK - and someone will then ask for their credit card details to make a payment to solve the issue. The person answering the phone says a third party has been removing all their details from their handset - and this can only be stopped by paying up to £30 ($47) in Britain, or $80 (£51) in the US |
Other users say the issue is caused by adverts infected with malicious code, causing the warning to appear on otherwise safe and respectable websites. One user named Dizzer88 wrote on the forum last November: I too called the phone number to see what was going on. It went straight on hold when I called - didn't ring - and then when someone came on the line, it was a woman who I could barely hear due to the noise in the background. HOW TO BEAT THE iSCAMMERS If your Apple device is frozen by this warning message, take these steps: Press the Home button to exit Safari In Settings, enter Airplane Mode In Settings, look for Safari settings, and clear your internet browsing history and cookies Reopen Safari and the pop-up warning should have gone If it has, take your device out of Airplane Mode She stated that my iOS crashed and was no longer something on my iPhone 5S and that a third party was at that time taking all my info off my phone - nice "scare tactic", eh?. She then said for $80 though she could reinstall iOS and just needed my credit card number -yeah, okay. So I said that was ridiculous as I had been using apps and my phone the whole time I was talking to her on speaker, and said I would call Apple Support directly. She told me they would say the same thing about having to pay to have iOS reinstalled on my phone. I said "I highly doubt it" and told her I wouldn't pay the money and that she was essentially full of c***. She then said - probably after realising I wasn't buying any of it okay, ma'am and hung up on me. An Apple spokesman told MailOnline today: 'This support page on our website details how iOS users can turn off some features in Safari to help protect their privacy and device from possible security risks on the Internet.' |
Archbishop Desmond Tutu is being treated for an infection in a Cape Town hospital.(IndependentUK)
In a statement released by his charitable organisation, the Desmond and Leah Tutu Legacy Foundation, his daughter the Reverend Canon Mpho Tutu said she hopes he will be home again soon.
No details were given on the nature of the 82-year-old's infection, but it was described as "persistent".
His admitting to hospital comes just a few days after he renewed his wedding vows to his wife, Nomalizo Leah, to mark their 60th wedding anniversary.
The retired Anglican bishop is an icon in his home country of South Africa and across the world due to his fight against apartheid, for which he won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1984.
Tutu has lived with prostate cancer for 15 years, and has had a number of other health problems in the last few years.

Roger Rees, the lanky Tony Award-winning Welsh-born actor and director who made his mark onstage as Nicholas Nickleby and became a mainstay on Broadway playing Gomez in The Addams Family and Chita Rivera's doomed lover in The Visit, has died. He was 71.(CBC)
Rees died Friday night at his home in New York after a brief illness, said his representative, Rick Miramontez. Rees had abruptly left The Visit in late May to undergo a medical procedure.
Rees played the snobbish Robin Colcord on TV's Cheers and the British ambassador, Lord John Marbury, in The West Wing. Other recent TV credits include Elementary and The Good Wife.
Omar Sharif, the Egyptian actor who rode out of the Sahara in the 1962 screen epic Lawrence of Arabia into a glamorous if brief reign as an international star in films like Dr. Zhivago and The Night of the Generals, died on Friday in Cairo. He was 83.(NYTimes)
His death, at a hospital, was caused by a heart attack, his agent, Steve Kenis, said.
Mr. Sharif who later became as well known for his mastery of bridge as he was for his acting was a commanding, darkly handsome presence on screen. He was multilingual as well, and comfortable in almost any role or cultural setting.
Mr. Sharif had acted in a number of Egyptian films before the British director David Lean added him to the cast of Lawrence of Arabia, a a freewheeling depiction of the real-life exploits of the British adventurer T.E. Lawrence, who led Arab fighters in a series of battles against Turkish occupiers. Peter OToole starred in the title role.
Yesterday, news broke that Google has been stealth downloading audio listeners onto every computer that runs Chrome, and transmits audio data back to Google. Effectively, this means that Google had taken itself the right to listen to every conversation in every room that runs Chrome somewhere, without any kind of consent from the people eavesdropped on. In official statements, Google shrugged off the practice with what amounts to we can do that. |
Without consent, Googles code had downloaded a black box of code that according to itself had turned on the microphone and was actively listening to your room. |
This episode highlights the need for hard, not soft, switches to all devices webcams, microphones that can be used for surveillance. A software on/off switch for a webcam is no longer enough, a hard shield in front of the lens is required. A software on/off switch for a microphone is no longer enough, a physical switch that breaks its electrical connection is required. Thats how you defend against this in depth. Of course, people were quick to downplay the alarm. It only listens when you say Ok, Google. (Ok, so how does it know to start listening just before Im about to say Ok, Google?) Its no big deal. (A company stealth installs an audio listener that listens to every room in the world it can, and transmits audio data to the mothership when it encounters an unknown, possibly individually tailored, list of keywords and its no big deal!?) You can opt out. Its in the Terms of Service. (No. Just no. This is not something that is the slightest amount of permissible just because its hidden in legalese.) Its opt-in. It wont really listen unless you check that box. (Perhaps. We dont know, Google just downloaded a black box onto my computer. And it may not be the same black box as was downloaded onto yours. ) |

Some four years after adding TRIM support for first-party solid state drives to OS X, Apple incorporated the command for aftermarket drives as part of Tuesday's OS X 10.10.4 update. Spotted by AppleInsider readers, the new capability allows users to enable TRIM functionality on third-party SSDs without resorting to unsanctioned workarounds or software. Prior to the change, Apple only supported TRIM on original Mac SSDs. |
