iOS 9 Content blocking (ad blocking) apps

Has anyone been following this debacle?

Pretty wild.

The top ad blocker, pulls out from app store after a few days on the market and a moment of consciousness/clarity.

Then the baton gets passed to the next top app grosser - Crystal - in same category who was:

a) charging for the app
b) then soon started to collect fees from ad publishers to get whitelisted (get through the blocker)

The best part is - this was done all in the name of "fast browsing, focus on content, less data and more battery" and reclaiming the web for users (wink wink). He's collected $75k so far.

But the whitelisting of ad publishers has not been well received - at all. When I went looking a few days ago, I posted this tweet w/ comments from the apps store:

This has been a spirited discussion w/ both sides making their points, and its far from over. the Crystal's app dev quit his job to focus on this full time, drinking his own kool aid I gather. Either way, TBC.

H!

Migration Assistant~am I doing this wrong?

Hey guys/gals~I'm 100% new to this forum...but am glad to be here! I'm afraid with my experience level, there will be more taking than giving in the short term...so please be patient. lol With my username in mind...I have a few questions and am hoping someone can help. I'm not computer savvy in any way/shape/form so please don't hesitate to dumb-down the language in your replies. I won't be offended.

So I've owned an iMac 10.5.8 for about 7 years (bought new) and recently...it's really started having issues I can't explain. Specifically, outgoing mail server with Mac mail. In spite of numerous calls to my ISP (the biggest in Canada) everything looks good...and I can email from within their server with no issues. Mine works about 1/3 of the time...with no explanation as to why it doesn't the rest of the time.

So...

I recently had a chance to buy an unused, iMac 10.6.2 from a family member and I thought "simple"...I'll hook them up via FireWire...start the old computer holding down "T" and a few hours later....turning on the "new" computer will be like looking at the old one. Went into Migration Assistant, got it rolling...estimated time to completion~3 hours. No problem. I go back 3 hours later, it says 6 hours. Just before calling it a day, I check again...it says 11 hours. This morning, it says 15 hours so I pulled the plug on the whole thing. No change on the progress bar. Should I have left it? The changing ETA had me convinced something wasn't working the way it should. I've used this method to transfer everything from an ancient (dying) eMac to my 10.5.8 about 7 years ago with no issues. Just doesn't seem to be taking this time. Am I missing something? Not understanding Migration Assistant fundamentally?

Last component to the question....if the outgoing mail server issue is a bug of some kind...is bringing everything over to the newer machine likely to just bring that problem along with it?

Thanks for taking a moment to reply...I need all the help I can get!

Best OS X server ???

Good day to all.

on my previous post, i bought a Xserve and XRaid. Now that all of this is working? i had set it up as a time machine for my main OS x on my network, which did saved my butt recently after a SSD disk failure.

Sadly enough, i had enough with that noise from the Xserve 2008 and currently using a Macpro running 10.6 server.

My xraid is still running and all and would love to use this to a new level.

I want to go wireless, i want to create my own "MY"Cloud for my iphone and macbook over the net and all and yet, I have no clue how to do it. which OSX server is the best to take the challenge. is 10.6 to old or should i go with 10.9 server. Apple use to have it, but they pulled it off, how is 10.8 server, is it a good one?

I'm sure i'm not the only one there trying to set this up or trying to understand to set this up.

any advise and help would be great.

Thanks

Mac App Store: Old Software pulled (Aperture, etc.)

Well... this isn't cool.

Apple Removes Older Software From "Purchased" Tab in Mac App Store
Apple’s recent move to pull older versions of discontinued software – including older versions of OS X, Aperture, and more – from the “Purchased” tab of the Mac App Store is not sitting well with some users.

MacRumors:
The decision to disallow users from downloading the older software is not going over well on reddit, where commenters are calling Apple’s decision “user-hostile.”

That’s really unfortunate and hostile by Apple. What about people who use older operating systems due to compatibility problems with specific software?
Software pulled form the area includes the aforementioned Aperture, and older versions of OS X, including Lion, Mountain Lion, and Mavericks, as well as iPhoto.

While the software is reported to by unavailable for several days, it isn’t known at this point if the removals are due to a decision on Apple’s part to prevent users from running older software that is no longer supported, or if it is just a temporary bug.

Serious SATA/logic board problem on late 2011 MacBook?

I initially had the OEM hard drive on a late 2011 MacBook start to fail. Chrome would not load a tab without the Oops error, and Disk Utility would tell me it's an irreparable error. Which got me to buy a Kingston V300 SSD drive, along with a WD Black 750gb drive.
My intention was to install the SSD in the main bay, and the WD drive in the optical bay using a caddy.

So I start to have trouble with the WD conventional drive in the optical bay. I can connect this hard drive externally via an enclosure and a USB connection. I can put the SuperDrive back in and it works.

But with the new hard drive and caddy in the optical bay, the drive doesn't get recognized properly without triggering the spinning wheel and hanging. And I can't get Disk Utility to format it properly without error message. Does this all point to a faulty hard drive caddy? I figured if it was a problem with the SATA connector, it wouldn't allow me to re-install and use the original SuperDrive, right? And if the hard drive was faulty, I wouldn't be able to connect it externally via USB?

I inspect the optical bay SATA connector and it looks ok ( Imgur: The most awesome images on the Internet ) so decided to return the caddy and exchange for a new one.

While I manage to get the new SSD going by installing OS X Mountain Lion and restoring from an external Time Machine drive, I start getting the same "Aw Snap" Chrome errors I had with the OEM hard drive in the first place.

I ran "fsck -fy" from single user mode and it seemed to fix this. But the Chrome errors returned, and I tried running fsck -fy again. But this time unsuccessfully. ( Imgur: The most awesome images on the Internet )

Even with the Chrome errors, I had been able to start up OS X. But after the unsuccessful attempt to run fsck -fy, it would get to the Apple logo start up screen with a progress bar and then shutdown. ( Imgur: The most awesome images on the Internet )

I tried to take the SSD out to see if it's the SATA connection from the main bay, put it in an enclosure. But that produced a double panic error message? http://ift.tt/1O47BbQ

Stranger still, I had previously put the OEM hard drive in the optical bay caddy to try to troubleshoot my problems there. And just for fun, I tried starting up from the Windows 7 partition of that drive which somehow started up as an install of Windows Vista.
I'm seriously at a loss. What's causing all this? Logic board? Main drive bay SATA?

Would appreciate any direction I can get.

Suggestions for University student

Hello,

so I'm currently looking at buying a new Mac since my current Macbook (nicknamed old yeller) is very much outdated, is prone to overheating and I am in need of an upgrade.

I am in a first year bachelors in Mech Eng... I'm finishing up on some prereq courses and will start Mech Eng courses in the winter. I do find myself using my ipad a whole lot. I just toss it in my bag and I use it to read textbooks I have in PDF format in iBooks and I do web based homework on it. I also use it to access course slides that my teachers post on-line.

With the iPad Pro being released in september, I've been wondering which route to go. Get the iPad pro and buy a Mini for use at home? Or suck it up and buy a Macbook Pro retina with 16GBs RAM (since it can't be upgraded) or then again there is the Macbook Air that people keep raving about... It seems to me that between the Air and the Pro, the pro is better value since it gets near the same battery life and is only marginally thicker and heavier than the Air whilst being considerably more powerful and having a retina display.

I'm guessing that since I will be working as an Engineer in the forseable future, I will need Windows so that means some for of VMware or Bootcamp... I'm also currently a professional musician so I do use Logic but my current Apogee soundcard and Logic still work fine even with old yeller so I don't feel like I need to upgrade for my music needs.

So I'm thinking these options
1) Macbook Pro Retina (16GB) and use current iPad 4
2) Macbook Air and use current iPad 4
3) get iPad pro and replace "old yeller" with a mini

Thanks for any suggestions!

Canadian Border Services abuse

Sick husband assaulted by Cornwall, Ont., border officials, woman says
Cornwall Island woman says her husband was assaulted by Canada Border Service Agency officials earlier this week as he attempted to drive himself to hospital in Cornwall, Ont.

Donna Delormier said her husband, Antoine Delormier, 67, was thrown to the ground and pinned at the Cornwall border crossing after he refused to leave his vehicle because he was in "medical distress."

"He didn't get out of the vehicle because he was sick. And he didn't feel he was going to be able to get out,"

* * *

Delormier said her husband has recently had four heart attacks, and that when he woke up on Sept. 22, he was feeling unwell. Instead of waiting for an ambulance to arrive on Cornwall Island, Delormier said her husband decided to drive himself — normally a 10-minute trip — over the border into the city.

When he arrived at the border, a customs officer asked him to step out of the vehicle so they could search it. He refused, Delormier said.

"They didn't wait to let him explain that he was in distress and needed medical attention immediately," she said.

Delormier's husband was pulled out of his truck and thrown to the ground, Delormier said. Two more officers arrived, one putting a knee to his back while the other stepped on his head, she said.

He was placed in a holding cell and was told he was under arrest for hindering the officers, she added.

Eventually an ambulance was called and he was taken to the Cornwall Community Hospital, where he was diagnosed with pneumonia. Shortly after he was admitted, a CBSA officer came to the hospital and told him he was "unarrested," Delormier said.

On Friday, he was still in intensive care,

Trade Agreement, Milk sector

There was an earlier related thread that is a little challenging to follow now that the first post was deleted by the OP (Adrian). Still, here it is for reference.

Now comes news of the coming effects of the Trans-Pacific Partnership trade deal the Conservatives will try to bring into force before the election lands...

Trans-Pacific Partnership could include big dairy concession
Canada is preparing to open the border to more American milk, without getting reciprocal access for Canadian dairy farmers in the United States, CBC News has learned.

Trade Minister Ed Fast will leave the campaign trail to join his counterparts in Atlanta on Wednesday, intent on concluding the Trans-Pacific Partnership trade talks. Chief negotiators from the 12 Pacific Rim member countries meet starting Saturday.

Conservatives want to conclude a deal before the Oct. 19 election and cast it as a win for consumers. But what Fast offers could seriously disrupt the supply-managed dairy sector.

If that happens, "there's going to be a war," says Yves Leduc from the Dairy Farmers of Canada. "The industry will never accept that."

The list of outstanding issues is now very short: rules of origin for the automotive sector, which are also sensitive in Canada, as well as intellectual property protections for pharmaceuticals. The deal is portrayed as "98 per cent done."

The short strokes on dairy come down to how much of Canada's domestic market would be opened up to American products to compensate U.S. dairy producers for opening up their market to TPP partners such as New Zealand, an aggressive and competitive dairy exporter.

CBC News has learned Canada is prepared to offer up a significant share of its domestic market (as defined by consumption levels), including not only fluid milk, but also possibly butter, cheese, yogurt or the milk powders and proteins used to make other foods.

The American goal for dairy market access was nine or 10 per cent, a figure that prompts dairy industry folk to use words like "enormous" and "annihilation." But even if Canadian negotiators successfully push back, an offer of even half that would be huge.

It's far more than the concession made in the 2013 Canada-Europe Comprehensive Economic Trade Agreement, which was roughly two per cent. That more than doubled the previously tiny amount of European cheese allowed into Canada tariff-free. That deal, however, still protected other Canadian dairy products, including milk. (The EU deal has not yet been ratified by either side.)

* * *

Then there's the dairy processors: would they need transition assistance too? They're struggling to be competitive in an uncertain trade climate.

Ten per cent less domestic milk would destabilize the supply chain and potentially increase the consumer price of domestically processed dairy, if fixed costs remain the same with lower volumes. Alternatively, local plants may close.

In some places, Quebec and Atlantic Canada especially, competitive American dairies are only a few hours' drive away.

* * *

The U.S. industry, anxious about its losses under the Trans-Pacific Partnership in competitive global dairy markets, was pressuring for up to 15 per cent additional market access in Canada.

"They don't want to be a dumping ground," Leduc says. "Why should we open our markets for dumped products from the U.S., or anywhere else?"

American negotiators favour a "tonne for tonne" approach: each tonne given up to new imports would require a tonne of exports to somewhere else; in this case, Canada.

But the U.S. industry is about 10 times the size of Canada's. A tonne there is less significant to the overall U.S. picture than a tonne in Canada.

"To me, that's not a level playing field," Leduc says.

issue with sound

For the 3rd time now my Alarm Clock Pro app on my iPhone 6 (both in iOS 8 and 9) has failed to sound. I was thinking it might be an app problem until I remembered that on occasion, a received text will fail to sound once in awhile as well. A bit of searching and I see that other iPhone users has experienced the same and it seems to be a hardware issue. It's not reproduceable so taking it in to the Genius Bar wouldn't accomplish much. Any feedback out there that might help?

iMessage and SMS Texts

Getting my wife setup on an iPhone 4s, mostly for texting. I made sure I entered her as a separate contact in my Contacts. With iMessage enabled on my iPhone, when I send her a text, it goes as an iMessage but the received text also shows on my iPhone but with both our names. When I disable iMessage, it seems to work fine. I really don't want to keep iMessage disabled. I find this rather strange since it's only her number I am sending to. Why am I receiving the message I sent her on my iPhone as well?

Nova Scotia political thread

Rather than add noise to the Canadian Political Thread, if y'all don't mind, here's a Nova Scotia-specific thread.

You'd have thought that Nova Scotian politicians would have learned from the lessons from the 1992 privatization of Nova Scotia Power (i.e., a freakin' disaster). That was the provincial Progressive Conservatives' attempt to balance a budget by selling off a profitable crown corporation.

Now we have the Liberals in power. They've shown an astounding ability to make all the wrong moves since coming into office, and this is the latest stupidity: more sell-offs of profitable crown agencies, with no small amount of controversy in a situation involving lobbyists and conflict-of-interest allegations:

Nova Scotia registry privatization evaluation moves ahead
Two Nova Scotia Liberal operatives — including Premier Stephen McNeil's former campaign manager — have ended their lobbying efforts on behalf of an Ontario company pursuing the potential privatization of provincial business, land and motor vehicle registries.

Winning 2013 campaign manager Chris MacInnes and another Liberal, Jamie MacNeil of Group M5, terminated lobbying activities on behalf of Teranet Inc. on Sept. 22.

It comes just days after CBC News revealed MacInnes had lobbied on behalf of Toronto-based Teranet which has won exclusive long term contracts to operate provincial registries in Ontario and Manitoba.

MacInnes began lobbying on behalf of Teranet Inc in August 2014 as the cash-strapped McNeil government began exploring the idea of privatization.

Exclusive, long-term contracts

In Ontario and Manitoba, Teranet made large, upfront payments to provincial governments in exchange for exclusive long-term contracts to operate the land and property registries.

In 2010 Teranet paid Ontario $1 billion upfront for a 50-year deal. In Manitoba, the company got a 30-year deal for an upfront payment of $75 million.

MacInnes lobbied on behalf of Teranet, introducing the company to Service Nova Scotia Minister Mark Furey, after the government began pursuing the privatization option.

* * *

Nova Scotia Association of Realtors said it is concerned a move to privatize the land registry would mean more fees for home buyers in the province.

"We've been monitoring this issue since it was brought to our attention earlier this year," said NSAR president Gord Burns in the release.

"And frankly, we're concerned that privatization of a public service like the land registry could result in higher fees, less publically available data, and reduced access to services."

Based on what happened in Ontario and Manitoba after the land registry was privatized, NSAR said it's concerned the costs for home purchase-related services such as legal and surveyor fees could go up.

"If service providers need to pay increased fees to access the registry, then that will be passed on to consumers,"

* * *

The Opposition NDP focussed on another element in the document.

"Respondents may propose a fee increase model. However, in any ASD arrangement the province would establish the parameters for fee increases or changes to balance the respondent's reasonable needs against the financial impact on citizens of the province," said a news release.

NDP Service Nova Scotia critic Sterling Belliveau demanded the McNeil government tell the public what level of fee increase they can expect as a result of privatization.

"It's bad enough the privatization of registries will cost the province hundreds of millions of dollars in future revenue along with jobs, but now we learn the McNeil government plan could end up costing Nova Scotians more for basic things like renewing a driver's licence," Belliveau said in the second NDP release issued Tuesday on the potential registry privatization.

Deadly. The very definition of 'greedy capitalist'

Hedge Fund Manager Buys Rights To Critical Drug, Hikes Price By 5000%
This is enough to make anyone sick.
Specialists in infectious disease are protesting a gigantic overnight increase in the price of a 62-year-old drug that is the standard of care for treating a life-threatening parasitic infection.

The drug, called Daraprim, was acquired in August by Turing Pharmaceuticals, a start-up run by a former hedge fund manager. Turing immediately raised the price to $750 a tablet from $13.50, bringing the annual cost of treatment for some patients to hundreds of thousands of dollars.
The hedge fund manager responsible for the price increase is named Martin Shkreli. Shkreli has a reputation as some type of wunderkind, having started his own hedge fund company while still in his 20's. Shkreli has already drawn attention for urging the FDA not to approve drugs made by companies whose stocks Shkreli was shorting. In July 20012, Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington called for an investigation of Shkreli and others whom it charged were manipulating the prices of drug company stocks through blog posts intended to spread negative and purportedly misleading information about certain drugs. According to CREW, Mr. Shkreli has acknowledged he has no medical expertise whatsoever. His company stands to increase sales in the magnitude of tens or even hundreds of millions of dollars from the price increase, according to the article.
NOTE: Daraprim is used to treat Toxoplasmosis and malaria.

Hello all,
I've never experienced this issue before on Mac, but it has just happened on my Macbook Pro running Yosemite. I've not had the issue on my Mac Mini. the problem is this:

I opened my Chrome browser on the MBP today and an additional three tabs loaded, one being the normal home page that i have and another being the "Delta Search Engine" page and another tab that says "I Search For", another Google Search page.

In my experience with the PC and Microsoft I was able to disable these unwanted adware pages. How do i accomplish this on my MBP. Doing a google search I learned that the "the Delta Search" page appears to be malware. What program does Mac have for avoiding this situation? Thank you

Malware hits iOS App Store

Apple's App Store hit by cyberattack
Apple Inc. said on Sunday it is cleaning up its iOS App Store to remove malicious iPhone and iPad programs identified in the first large-scale attack on the popular mobile software outlet.

The company disclosed the effort after several cybersecurity firms reported finding a malicious program dubbed XcodeGhost that was embedded in hundreds of legitimate apps.

It is the first reported case of large numbers of malicious software programs making their way past Apple's stringent app review process. Prior to this attack, a total of just five malicious apps had ever been found in the App Store, according to cyber security firm Palo Alto Networks Inc.

The hackers embedded the malicious code in these apps by convincing developers of legitimate software to use a tainted, counterfeit version of Apple's software for creating iOS and Mac apps, which is known as Xcode, Apple said.

"We've removed the apps from the App Store that we know have been created with this counterfeit software," Apple spokeswoman Christine Monaghan said in an email. "We are working with the developers to make sure they're using the proper version of Xcode to rebuild their apps."

She did not say what steps iPhone and iPad users could take to determine whether their devices were infected.

Palo Alto Networks Director of Threat Intelligence Ryan Olson said the malware had limited functionality and his firm had uncovered no examples of data theft or other harm as a result of the attack.

My iPad2 16GB wifi was running iOS7.1.2 before I upgraded it to iOS 9 last night, this morning I only get into once after answered those normal questions when upgrading the iOS,I found it is running a little bit lag,so I decided to reboot the device, somehow it keeps crashing rebooting and I'm no longer able to get into the system,I don't want to lose data but how can I resolve this issue?

I tried to connect it to a PC which has iTunes installed,I could not see the device because it stuck at the white apple screen with a progress bar,bar is increasing but device would reboot after the bar reaches about 30% of its length, then repeat the same.

I did upgrade another iPad 2 from 8.4.1 to iOS9 through OTA without any issue,

Please advise,thanks in advance.

Hey Siri in iOS 9

I could have sworn at the Sept 9 event they said that you would be able to use "Hey Siri" in iOS 9 without being plugged into a power source. Am I wrong on this? Is it a feature only for the new 6S and 6S plus?

Too close to home!

Our little community, which goes years without a single homicide has seen three within a week. That's three times as many as terrorists have killed in all of Canada since 9/11.

Bits and pieces have been coming in over the major media.

Talking to the local news editor, this double sounds like it was incredibly gruesome. We can only hope this lowlife will not skate off on an insanity plea.

SSD Upgrade advice

Hello all
Looking for some advice. The ehMac people have been kind to me in the past with some great tips and advice so here goes nothing.

I have a Mac Book Pro 17"
2.66 GHz
I7
8GB
OSX 10.9.5
500GB HDD
Mid 2010

Looks like my hard drive has died good news is i backed it up not that long ago via time machine.

So my question is that i want to move up to a 1tb. Do i go to SSD ?
I have read a few reviews on the Samsung 840 & 850 EVO sounds like a decent SSD.
another brad that comes up on the net a lot is the OWC SSD

I can install any drive in my macbook with out an issue, but my concern is the stuff i read about online regarding TRIM & Kext this is way out of my comfort zone when it comes to my actual knowledge.

Are these things i need to be concerned about ?

Should i even go to SSD ?

Thanks for all the great ehMac advice

I ran over my iPhone 5

I now have a crack near the top 1/4 from left to right. It mostly seems to text fine, but a couple of words were detected and misspelled things. The scratch looks light and not deep so far.

Should I go to Apple to repair it? Could it be damaged internally? Cost? Buy a new phone?

iBooks PDF listing

I changed from an old iPad2 to an iPad Mini4 and at the same time updated to the most current IOS.
Most things are the same but in iBooks I keep a lot of PDF documents that I used to move from the main PDF folder to specialized folders for easy reference. In the old iPad/IOS when I moved the PDF it disappeared from the PDF folder, now it does not.
That is all PDFs even those moved to sub-folders still appear under the main PDF folder, very confusing to me but maybe I just need to change my thought process.
Anyone else run into this?
Is there a way around it?
Thanks. :)

For Sale Flawless late 2012 MacBook Pro 13" 2.5Ghz 500GB-HD 8GB-RAM

I'm selling the 'twin' / sibling computer to one that I advertised for sale here early in 2014:

It is another excellent, late 2012 MacBook Pro 13" 2.5Ghz 500GB-HD but this one has 8 GB-RAM. This is a great computer with a ton of features and ports: 2 USB, FireWire 4 and 6, photo card slot, DVD-RWR, etc.

Note the photos are reboxing and not unboxing: I returned the computer to its original new state with plastic wrap and all.

AppleCare just ended in August 2015 but there were never any issues with this computer. Battery life is strong.

$700, cash, no trades.

Meet up in Toronto/GTA.

I have tons of only-positive feedback in various places, including long-standing credentials here at ehMac.

Stop apps from automatically opening on restart

Snow leopard never had this behaviour, so why does Mavericks and Yosemite? And how the hell do you turn it off? It's very annoying and makes startup unnecessarily longer than it needs to be.

And NO I am NOT talking about deselecting Login items or unchecking the "Reopen Windows when logging in" option.

WHY is this a feature and WHY is it so HARD to turn off? And WHO REALLY uses this???

Two Macbook Pros. Which one to keep? Or sell them both?

I ended up with 2 Macbook Pros after upgrading my daughter's computer. Yes, she gets the upgrades, I get the hand me downs.

The MBP that I've been using since 2009 is a MacBook Pro Mid-2009 15" 2.53GHz.

My daughter's hand-me-down is a MacBook Pro mid-2012 "Core i7" 2.3 15".

My MBP has been a workhorse but who wouldn't want a bit more speed. Question is, am I going to see a big upgrade if I start using the 2012 MBP? I have both machines maxed out at 8GB. I know I can just start using it and figure it out but the machine has been wiped and ready to sell. I'd rather not load it up with my software.

I typically have a lot of apps open at once. Mostly browser windows, Mac Office, Photoshop.

Can I use 8GB DDR3 1600 RAM in a late 2011 MacBook Pro?

I bought two 8 GB sticks of Crucial DDR3 1600 RAM which I was originally going to use in a late 2012 Mac Mini.
Now i'm thinking of using one of those sticks in a late 2011 MacBook Pro.

What's the purpose of storage in AppleTV?

I just finished watching the keynote, and saw that Apple TV is available in two storage configs. I just realised I have no idea as to why one would need storage at all in Apple TV. It does not store anything, it only streams, either from Apple or from a local computer/iDevice. It's only the OS itself that might actually reside on the device. So, why any storage at all, and why two options?

Cheers

September 9 Apple event

Surprised there are no posts on this already, things really have changed in the last little while on ehmac.ca

So what are you thoughts? I am looking forward to the new Apple TV. Love the siri integration, but will have to see if it really is that useful for navigating around. I will be picking one up as soon as it is released. Seems like some nice improvements to the iPhone. I really only followed cnets live coverage when I could, I did see something say "hey siri" will now work even when on battery power, great! I love the feature and use it all the time when plugged in and wish I could use it when it is not. Is this a feature only for the new iPhone or something coming with iOS 9?

Not sure what to make of the big iPad Pro. Would be nice if they started bridging the gap between OS X and iOS with this device, maybe a USB port and some more classic ways of file storage while keeping the touch friendliness of iOS. Cant see lugging one of those around, but would have considered it to replace my MacBook Pro if it was a bit more versatile like my MacBook Pro.

Changing App Stores - recent change?

In the past, I was able to easily change between my Canadian address and my families U.S. address in the Apple Store with ease. I have some purchase in the U.S. app store and others in the Canadian store. I was in the American store and went to change to the Canadian store today and no problems. Did what I have to do (i.e. some app updates), then went to change back to the American store. Except it won't let me because it says I now need to insert a U.S. credit card and doesn't provide me with the 'none' option. I even tried my Canadian credit card but it won't verify against the USA address! Ugh Apple!

Looks like Apple may have modified it last month - http://ift.tt/1Nqdq2N

Any ideas on how to get back in without a U.S. credit card?

R.I.P. 'Marmaduke' creator, Brad Anderson

Brad Anderson, creator of Marmaduke cartoon, dies

Brad Anderson, creator of the Marmaduke cartoon strip that for more than 60 years featured the antics of a lovable Great Dane, has died.

A statement Tuesday from Universal Uclick, which syndicated the comic strip, says Anderson died Aug. 30. He was 91.

Universal Uclick spokeswoman Julie Halper didn’t immediately provide additional details on the death of Anderson, who lived in Montgomery, Texas, near Houston.

Anderson was born in Jamestown, New York, in 1924. The Universal Uclick website says Anderson’s interest in cartooning dated to his childhood, when he drew popular cartoon characters to amuse himself.

He graduated from Syracuse University and did freelance work for magazines before creating Marmaduke in 1954.

Anderson’s son, Paul, assisted him in later years on the popular comic strip.

Sophos anti-virus slows web browsing to a crawl on 10.11 beta

As it says. Sophos is currently NOT compatible with El Capitan but leaving it installed has a nasty side effect: it increases the latency of any web page, in my experience more so on those containing flash.

I had been pulling my hair out first on Yosemite (unexplained drops in performance) but lost 90% of speed in El Capitan. I investigated all the DNS routes as some pings were not correct. I had no clue Sophos could be the culprit.

Bumped into the explanation by chance here

Drive failed...restore from TM

Just had my OWC SSD die tonight. Had to hard shutdown and on reboot, I got the flashing folder. Connected a FW drive with my latest TM Backup and the Mac booted to the Restore option. Disk Utility did not recognize my internal SSD. Since I have 2 external drives with the same TM Backup, I removed my SSD and replaced it with one of the external drives. Before going any farther, I thought I'd check here with the best way to do a TM Restore. I suppose I should use Disk Utility to erase the now installed HDD first? And then, it it easiest just to follow through with the Restore? Is there anything else that I should consider or need to know? I've only lost one day of data and that's only some pics on my Desktop and some emails. Thanks ahead. I believe my SSD should still be under OWC warranty.

Transfer Albums to iPad???

OK, I'm confused & very #*%@#!

I'm trying to copy/transfer a music album from my iTunes library to my wife's iPad.

Late 2010 iMac, Yosemite, Itunes 12.10.50 to iPad updated to 8.4.1 - connected via lightning/usb cable.

I can see the albums i want to copy in iTunes on computer, I can "see" the iPad in iTunes on iMac, & I've read in the Pad user manual that I can just manually drag the files across. Easy Right?
(I don't want to "sync" the iTunes libraries - I don't want to remove or delete the existing music on the iPad, just ADD the albums)

How to I copy/drag/move the albums?

For Sale MacPro 1,1

I am thinking of selling my MacPro 1,1, looking to get 350 for it.

Specs
Xeon 2.66x2
9GB of ram
250GB regular HD (I have all 4 bays but missing a few screws, trying to find them all)
GT210 1GB Silent (no fan) - Allows for running Yosemite have the original also
Yosemite 10.10.5 installed using hack described here: Resolved - 2006/2007 Mac Pro (1,1/2,1) and OS X Yosemite | MacRumors Forums

Cosmetically the box is very good considering the age, no dents or major issues. Just some scuff marks from normal wear.

I also have a USB 3.0 card installed that works without any special drivers. It does need power so you will need to run a power cable to it. I had run it from the DVD bay but that prevented it from closing fulling. You can get an adapter to connect it to one of the hard drive bays but I had all 4 used so that's why I didn't do that.

Have not had any issue with it and have done a fresh install now.

I am located in the GTA near wonderland/Vaughan mills

SSD & Yosemite Install Problems in MacMini

I installed a new ADATA SP900 256GB 2.5" 6Gb/s Solid State Drive in my 2010 MacMini (4,1) a few days back to replace the failing stock 320 HD.

Initially tried to do fresh install of Snow Leopard from original MacMini grey system disk. Install failed (error said to try cleaning DVD and retry). No luck. Tried another SL install from retail DVD. Same error message. Decided to try a fresh install of OSX Yosemite from a bootable USB. Install failed (error said file may have been corrupted). Made another USB install drive from wireless download on another Mac (using a different USB stick). Tried the USB install and got the same ‘damaged/corrupted’ error. Then tried to install OSX Yosemite onto MacMini SSD via Target mode from another Mac. Install was successful! Started using the new install of Yosemite on the MacMini and all was good for about 2 hours of use, then experienced several freezes and system crashes.
Decided to try another download and install of Yosemite via direct download from Apple. Kept getting corrupt or damage filed errors during install. Also got an error that said there was an error extracting required files from pkg file.
All if my installs have been from wireless downloads. I decided to try connecting Mini to router via ethernet and did one more Yosemite download after booting Mini from external HD SuperDuper backup. Received same install error (file may be corrupted).
Really frustrated now and not sure how to proceed.
I can’t get a fresh install from a DVD, USB or direct download. Is the problem with Yosemite or the SSD? Any suggestions? I’ve ran Disk Utility on the SSD and errors were fixed. What should I try next?
