Questions about Photos storage

I recently got a 2015 refurbished i7 Macbook Pro with 256Gig SSD to replace my late 2008 MBP which was held together. literally, with racer tape!

With all the programmes installed, I have about 150 Gig of free space on this new machine - or I would have if my Photos Library wasn't taking up 92 Gig of it!

I have a fast (250 Meg) unlimited Rogers Internet account so I subscribed to a 200 Gig iCloud account from Apple to be able to store my photos, and music, in the Cloud. iTunes does this perfectly but Im having problems with Photos. My thinking was that with the fast connection, it would only take a second or so to download an image from iCloud and with a relatively small, but lightning fast, SSD drive, it makes sense not to clutter it up with the Photos Library or the iTunes Media Library.

I've set up my iCloud in System Preferences to "Automatically upload and store my entire photo Library in iCloud. In Photos, I've also set the Preference "Automatically upload and store my entire photo Library in iCloud."

So having elected to store the Photos on the Cloud, I was expecting to find a small Photos Library.Photoslibrary file - just enough to hold the Thumbnails and a link to each photo on the Cloud. Instead, I have a 92 gig Photos Library file, which averages roughly 5 megs for each photo in my library - i.e. not thumbnails.

Can anybody help - am I doing something wrong? As I take more photos, obviously my library gets bigger, so the free space on my SSD goes down. What would happen if I delete the Photos Library - would that also delete the photos in the Cloud? Is there a way of just having the photos kept in the Cloud with a small overhead on my MBP, as happens with iTunes?

Can anybody offer any tips/advice - all is greatly welcomed.

Al Molinaro, the loveable character actor with the hangdog face who was known to millions of TV viewers for playing Murray the cop on "The Odd Couple" and malt shop owner Al Delvecchio on "Happy Days," died Friday at Verdugo Hills Hospital in Glendale, his son Michael Molinaro said.

Molinaro, retired from acting since the 1990s, died of complications of gallstone problems, his son said. He was 96.

reinstall iOS 9 without losing data?

My iPhone 6 Plus is acting sluggish and strange, I am thinking I should just give it a fresh start, but I really do not want to go about setting everything up again if I can avoid it. Is there a way to wipe the OS and reinstall while keeping all my data, like email settings, photos, etc? Or is this a pipe dream and I am going to need to reinstall all my apps and settings?

iTunes 12.3.1.23 - Caution

I recently installed 12.3.1.23 in an effort to solve another problem and now have more problems to fix.

Reluctantly making the transition to Yosemite (10.10.5) and after updating iTunes I found it to be a bit slow & not opening or accepting new video (TV Shows) quickly. Then I twice had iTunes decide the existing library "was not a recognized iTunes file" and labeled it "Damaged" and created a new library with only a very small portion of my media showing. I spent several hours reinstalling all my shows. Then a few days later the same thing happened. The new library restocked with my files is not opened and another new libaray created.

All my media files are on an external HD (just under 2TB - movies & TV Shows). I can reboot back into Snow Leopard & iTunes there runs just fine.

In researching the problem I've come across several references to files missing in iTunes 12.3.1.23 with some people recommending reverting back to 12.3.0 or even 12.1.

I suggest that anyone who is considering updating iTunes hold off for a while until Apple solves this mess.

iTunes Help - Missing Files and Others won't play

Hi,

A little while ago the external hard drive I use for iTunes media had issues and I couldn't access any of the files on it. Thanks to a few helpful ehMac members I was pointed in the direction of a data recovery software that allowed me to reover my entire iTunes media library.

I put the recovered library on a new external, pointed iTunes toward it and thought I was good to go. However, only a fraction of my songs would actually play.

What I have ended up with is an iTunes library with both songs that won't play (iTunes just skips them) and missing songs/movies.

All the files are on the hard drive but files are scattered (ex. music) - some in one music folder, some in another music folder.

What is the best way to fix all this? Was thinking of starting fresh with a new library and just importing all my movies, music and apps but this sounds complicated and time consuming.

Sorry for the long post and appreciate any help you guys can provide!

Safari 9.0.1

Started having a problem with Safari today. Tried to save a bookmark and keep getting the spinning beachball and have to use force quit to stop it. The message I get when force quit iy that Safari is nor responding. Deleted the caches, repaired permissions but not quite sure what to do next. Have googles it and there was a suggestion to delete the following:


Delete the following items from the Library folder (some may not exist):

Caches/com.apple.Safari

Caches/com.apple.Safari.SearchHelper

Caches/com.apple.SafariServices

Caches/com.apple.WebKit.PluginProcess

Caches/com.apple.WebProcess

Saved Application State/com.apple.Safari.savedState

Leave the Library folder open. Try Safari again. If the problem is solved, stop here. Close the Library folder. If you still have a problem, continue.



Seems a bit drastic. Has anyone else been having the same problem ?

Why is my Mac Mail deleting emails?

For the past year my emails in the inbox are being deleted. All that remains is the past two weeks. Each day emails disappear.

I have tried to fix the problem but to no avail.

My emails in the Sent box are not effected.

I have checked out the preferences for Mac Mail but could not see anything that I could correct.

I thought that with new OS's that the problem would be rectified.

I have a 27" Mid 2011. Processor is 3.4 MHz Intel Core i7

Macbook pro puzzler

I'm dealing with my mom's Macbook Pro (I think it's a 15" 2011 one) which I got updated to El Capitan. Today, i got a phone call-it's dead, frozen, won't go. So: I ask them to reset the pmu/nvram with the Left hand side keyboard salute-Shift, control, option and power when the Macbook is shut down. Machine boots up, shows the Apple icon and progress bar. gets to halfway-freezes. So, I ask them to zap the pram. Now it gets a bit past halfway progress and.....freezes. I ask them to reboot from the Recovery partition and do disc first aid, which it does and try rebooting. So...same thing. gets to 2/3 progress and freezes. I'm out of ideas right now, apart from booting up in Safe mode. Someone asked me if installing MacKeeper on it would fix it and clear up all of these problems. How about no !!:ptptptptp:mad: seriously that thing causes more problems then it fixes. I suggested if they had AppleCare, to call Apple or Take it in (sigh....) I'm stumped on this one. I suggested the usual remedies and nothing really worked. I had such hopes for El Capitan but Oh Captain, My Captain, it seems like you have pooped the bed (if I can use such language here) ...any hints or explanation would be appreciated as to what, if anything I could have done otherwise to solve this.

Upgrading to SSHD for 27" iMac Late 2009

Hello,

I've added an SSD to my own 24" iMac Early 2009, and now am helping a friend to upgrade her 27" iMac Late 2009.

I think we've landed on purchasing a hybrid drive (l , I think, unless there's a compatibility issue; any thoughts?

Aside from a SATA connection, can I install either a 2.5" or 3.5" one of these in the computer? If so, would either need a temperature sensor? (Referencing the most helpful answer here, it appears the 2.5" doesn't, at the very least?)

Also, are there any brand-related compatibility issues for SSHDs, as there appear to be with the HDs (see here)?

I'm getting so sick of Apple.

Mavericks, Yosemite, and now El Capitan have all introduced problems for me. This latest OS is truly a piece of crap. I'm sure it works great for a lot of you, and especially on newer equipment, but I'd swear it's designed to run like crap on older hardware so people upgrade (just like their iPhone OS - my sister's iPhone 5 is the buggiest piece of crap since updating to OS 9. Co-incidence? Doubtful)

Since updating to El Capitan my computer has been running terribly, constantly freezing, especially Safari, and I get random log outs, etc. Worst part of all is iTunes just killed my iPod. Bad enough I keep getting asked to sign into Apple Music, which I NEVER signed up for in the first place, but this goddamn piece of **** software just killed my iPod when I tried to restore it.

I JUST bought this 3rd gen iPod. The 3rd gen was my very first iPod, and I bought it for the nostalgia. As soon as I tried to copy over music though, iTunes kept crashing. It would not transfer music over properly. I have seen this before with my previous iPhone, a bug I think that has to do with transferring over music using a playlist.

Anyway, damn thing stalls when it was restoring and now my iPod won't boot past the Apple logo. The HDD just keeps clicking away. It was working just fine before I updated iTunes and attempted to restore it.

Really sick of this BS.

So, no iPhone Apps on iPad in iOS9?

So, I took the plunge and upgraded my iPad to iOS9. Did a backup, nuke and restore and everything went smoothly, no glitches. GREAT!

So then I go to open an iPhone app that I run on my iPad as there is no native version of this app, but it has been updated for iOS9 and up to this point, I have never had a problem with it. Tap on icon and it apparently opens, then....

Crash.

Another app, the same thing. Yet another with the same results. I spent the next few minutes opening every app on my iPad and came to this conclusion: Under iOS9, iPhone apps will NOT work on my iPad anymore. Not. Even. ONE. Opened.

Please tell me that this is just a glitch, or is running iPhone apps on an iPad now a discontinued feature?

2011 MacBook Pro - Is 16G RAM Worth It Compared To 8G?

I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro 2 GHz Intel Core i7. Even though Apple states that the maximum RAM is 8 Gig, the general opinion here seems to be that 16 Gig is possible. However, I could not find any comments indicating how much better, if at all, 16G compared to 8G (I currently have 4G). Apple has told me that even if I put in 16G, the system cannot take advantage of it becasue it is only designed for 8G.

My questions: How much better will it run on 16G compared to 8G? Is it worth the extra $100?

Any wireless deals to add an iPad / new service right now?

Just picked up an iPad Air 2, and would like to add it to my current plan with Telus. They want $10 a month to add it on, and share the current data that I have. I'm a little choked with them as I've been with them for over a year, and they just informed me that with home internet and 2 cell phones, that I was eligible for a $15 a month discount the entire time. They applied it to my next bill, but wouldn't backdate it for any amount of time.

Anyway, for ease I'd just like to add it to telus, but wanted to see if there are any other smoking deals out there. I'd switch both my phones over if I could really wrangle something nice up, that would make the iPad plan virtually costless.

Why Such A Huge Increase In iPhone Applecare?

I decided to drop by the Applestore today and add Applecare to my new iPhone 6S that I bought about three weeks ago. I got quite a surprise when I read this on the Apple Canada website:

3D printing?

I am curious about 3D printing, prices have come down on some units into a range where it has me wondering about buying one to toy around with.

How complicated is software for 3D printing? Is this something someone not involved with any 3D modelling could step into somewhat easily? Is there a need for some expensive software?

All music keeps disappearing from iPhone

I've had all of my music, playlists and ringtones disappear from my iPhone at least 3 times now.

The first time, my phone said I had no music at all on the phone. I reconnected to iTunes, resynced and my music and playlists came back.

The second time, I only had a few songs that it registered as purchased from iTunes.

Today, I went to play my music only to be told that none of it was stored locally.

I've not changed any settings on my phone nor iTunes. I'm not using Apple Music nor do I use the cloud on my phone. Any idea why this would keep happening?

Software update stuck on Digital Camera Raw Compatibility Update

App Store shows an update for OS X 10.11.1 that includes iTunes 12.3.1 and Digital Raw Compatibility Update 6.17.

When I click Update All, it restarts, and pops up a message saying the Raw Camera Update could not be updated and asks me to try again after restarting.

I restart multiple times and get the same issue.

The problem is, because of this, neither iTunes not OS X gets updated.

In the App Store app, Raw Compatibility shows "Update" while iTunes and OS X shows "Restart", and nothing actually gets updated.

Is there anyone else facing this issue or is it just me?

Google is no help.

Device Sync and Apps in iTunes

Correct me if I'm wrong, but before iOS 9 and El Capitan, didn't syncing a device in iTunes automatically bring over the Apps updated on the Device to the iTunes library of Apps? Before syncing, I checked to make sure all my Apps on my Device were updated. I then went into iTunes library of Apps and saw there were 16 that needed updating. I then did a sync, thinking that would bring over the updated Apps from the Device, but it didn't. Am I all wrong on this?

El Capitan goes hummmmm

Well, i have upgraded El Capitan on my macpro for one only reason. Final cut pro 10.2.2 and that is the only reason why i upgraded. Over all? i hate the os to death.

As some of you know, i have a Xraid connected to my macpro. My Java is up to date and even with the proper IP, the new OS doesn't see my Xraid.

Most of my new App Utilities are no longer compatible with the new OS "what a waste of money" So i have made a seperate disk for EL capitan and my SSD disk as 10.8.x.

Over all, not for the Xraid part of it, I just have to say that i hate the new OS, the GUI is ugly even my niece can do better with bevels and all i haven't tried any of my Adobe products as the new os is freshly installed on my 1 tb Mechanical drive

HELP! - Need to add audiobook to iPad

Help me before I crush this iPad!

Struggling with my wife’s iPad (4th generation Model A1458), trying to re-load an audiobook which disappeared off the iPad during the last update/syncing.

I have the files ( The Audio Bible - 17 chapters, .m4b file format) on my iMac.
They play fine in iTunes on my machine.

After much frustration & gnashing of teeth I found the way to “manually” copy them onto the iPad.
Then open iPad, Open iBooks, select Audiobooks - nothing. Not recognized at all.

Open iTunes on my iMac (latest version 12.3.1 under Yosemite 10.10.5), connect to iPad, click on Audiobooks under on my device and they all show. Click on one, get info, select file, and they show as being on the iPad. (In fact there is more than one copy of several as I retried to copy over several times - each time the progress bar showed coping.

I downloaded an app designed to put files on an iPad (iMazing), it told me that duplicates were already on the iPad - no files transferred!

I have resisted Syncing the iPad with my iMac again - When I select “Sync Audiobooks”, I get a warning “ do you want to remove your apps/movies/games etc etc”, choice of cancel or remove & install”. I do not want to remove anything - I want to add only.

The audiobooks are in m4b format - protected MPEG-4 audio.

I tried to play one of the audiobooks from iMazing but got the dialog which stated that protected files could only be played in iTunes of Quicktime player.

I was under the impression that iTunes & Quicktime were “Baked in” to IOS, Am I missing something?

Anyway, I would appreciate any information / advice from the members here

Do i really have to sync the iPad with my computer to get the file recognized?

Anyway to sync without removing the existing files?

Has anyone any experience with this problem?

Any recommendations for an app which would help solve this riddle?

App Store won't open in El Capitan??

Hello, I just installed El Capitan on Late 2012 MacMini, everything is working great except the App Store won't open. Blank App Store does appear, with tool bar at top, showing 1 update, but otherwise blank, with loading wheel spinning.
I tried trashing my prefs, but it didn't help.
If I delete my App store, where might I download it again? I can't seem to find it on the Apple site?

"Suggestions" in Calendar

I'm currently using version 8 of Calendar on my Mac and it's causing a real problem. Whenever I enter a new event, when I put in a time, I suddenly get a "suggestions" popup. I try to ignore the "suggestions" but when I hit return, the "suggestion" automatically replaces what I wanted to write and I can't see a way to override this "feature". Any ideas how I can disable this "feature"?

El Capitan extended keyboard issues

I have a USB extended Apple keyboard and the right side number keys are not functioning in El Capitan 10.11.1. They work to log into my account, but after the desktop appears they stop functioning. Funny thing is, the surrounding keys =/-+* are working. It's just 0 thru 9 that are borked.
Everything works fine when I boot into Yosemite.

I noticed that while mucking around in the Keyboard pref pane, that it fails to identify my keyboard.
I've done some searching in Apple Discussion forums but haven't found a solution. Frustrating.

Trying to find iMac SSD upgrade cable from CDN source..

OWC has the kit to upgrade an iMac with an SSD and although the price for 2 cables is only $20 US, I only need the one power cable, not both, since I already have the red data cable.
I called OWC and they do not sell the one cable on it's own.
Once you factor in shipping, exchange rate and customs duty, it adds up to almost $45 Cdn. Anyone know if just the power cable itself is available from a Canadian supplier?

Yahoo still shooting at its toes

I do like my Yahoo mail accounts. One in particular gets at least 100 SPAM mails a month and is almost perfect in putting SPAM in the Spam folder and everything else in the in-box.

However every so often at the top of my inbox are Yahoo ads. Can't delete them or redirect them to SPAM just have to wait for them to disappear.

No longer can I create a new Yahoo eMail account without including my non-existent cell phone number.

Now to create additional irritation, when you access just about any Yahoo webpage you're likely to get the pop-up pictured below.

As a finale to the rant I double dog dare any one to find a way to give feed back to Yahoo, as to how really irritating these features are!

Rearranging Apps

Just spent a bunch of time rearranging my many ads on my iPad (I find it easier that doing it in iTunes). When clicking Apply in iTunes, all of my time was wasted as iTunes put them back where they were. Bummer. Is there some way around this?

Dead drive? Can't erase

My iMac is 2008. Dug it out to see if I could get it going. It won't boot normally so I'm boring up using external thumb drive with OS X.

I got on disk utility and it sees my internal drive. I try to erase but get this message:

Erasing Macintosh HD and creating Macintosh HD.
Erase process has failed.

Unmounting disk, couldn't unmount disk. Operation failed.

Any other way to erase? Or is the drive dead?

Small database with attachments?

Hello there

I'm trying to create a simple database to store our press clippings. Basic info., some keywords, easy to search and update. The attachments are mostly pdf but also audio and video files (so will probably be linked rather than embedded).

We're using Daylite which would be totally unsuitable; Bento is dead; Filemaker would be overkill. The obvious solution would be Excel or Numbers with simply a column for file names but these are destined to be a mess as soon as more than person inputs!

Safari Bookmarks & iCloud

I have switched back to Safari from Chrome after quite some time but am finding the same ugly behaviour with syncing my Safari Bookmarks in the Cloud. I was organizing them on my MBP (trashing a large number of duplicates- go figure) and just this morning, it appears that iCloud has taken over again and switched my local Bookmarks on my MBP back to it's own structure. I've followed certain procedures for trashing iCloud Bookmarks and starting over with those on my MBP but the chaos always seems to return. I'm tempted to turn Safari off in the Cloud and do manual syncs with iTunes, but I'd rather not.

Apple Time Capsule

I find myself using my Macbook Pro and Mini Mac more than my Windows PC over the past several weeks. My question/statement is this; Convince me that I should invest in an Apple Time Capsule. I live in Japan, i am currently using a VPN service as many sites in other countries deny access to my server. I am wondering if the use of a VPN will have any deleterious effects on the Time Capsule.

Looking fora stand-alone photo catalogue app

Good Day all - got this reset in a new thread!

I'm hoping someone here can help me in my search for a photo organizing/cataloging app.

I have a couple of thousand photos, very poorly organized in multiple folders, in multiple locations, with lots of duplicates. In short, a mess!

I was trying to use iPhoto as a means of generating a catalog (in Snow Leopard), but ended up with more than one "library", and now that I'm reluctantly moving to Yosemite, iPhoto is acting strangely - and is destined for the dumpster anyway. I'm concerned that the new "Photo" will also disappear eventually, and I understand I does create a hidden copy of every image and the catalog function has limitations.

I have searched for a cataloging app - one that does not involve iCloud, Adobe, and preferably Apple ( Apple apps tend to evaporate after a few years! - but I could deal with that if I had to!)

I thought the new Affinity Photo might be the answer until I came across this comment from Andy Somerfield - Affinity Photo project lead.

"Photo is not a DAM - like Aperture, or Lightroom - it does not maintain a catalog of your images. It's an editor with RAW import capability - perhaps more like Photoshop + ACR.

So, unfortunately, you would need a separate DAM product to go along side it. We're planning to make one one day :) - but for now I'd happily recommend the (perpetual licensed) Capture One"

So, my question is, can anyone recommend a good photo cataloger/organizer which will help me find/keyword/search/display my images, but does not include editing/manipulating or creating a copy of every image cataloged. I'm checking on "Capture One" to see if that's suitable.

EDIT: The answer may be staring me in the face!
I have CS3 which includes Bridge, this may be all I need. I'm a little concerned about the fact it is a few years old and could fail with the next system upgrade (I'm currently transitioning to Yosemite from Snow Leopard)

I do like the fact that Bridge does not copy the photos or saves anything into a proprietary format - it just shows what is in each folder/file and the associated metadata. The search/find function works well and the keywords are easy to edit.

Who knew! After years of working with CS3, I finally found a use for Bridge!

A press to the power button results in the optical drive giving a whirr, but not much else -- no chime, no fan activity, screen doesn't light up.

Interesting, though: its FireWire controller will show up on another Mac's System Report, but it but it will not go into target disk mode. I suspect it is either a power or a logic board issue.

Power cord only. No keyboard, no mouse.

Elvira died RIP but is this possible or a waste of time?

Hello,

My 12" powerbook 1.5, Elvira, died. Her logic board can no longer keep going. I can revive her for about 2-5 minutes booting up from the install disc, but that's all. I have tried everything else possible, and so have accepted her fate.

In the meantime, I bought a 13" retina macbook pro and transferred everything manually (Tiger to Yosemite) and have most of my setup the way I like it.

On the not working so well side of Elvira... Some of the feet have fallen off. Last year I dropped Elvira and so the casing is slightly bent on one side, and the feet on the display corners are disolving from age.

So, I was thinking of dismantling my powerbook. Putting the Superdrive into an external case to be able to use it and possibly converting the lovely matte display into a second display for when I'm recording. The HD too, an IDE 160GB, is still very functional. Ideas....

What do you think? Am I wasting my time with these ideas? If so what would you do with her?

iPhoto won't update after OS update

Hello, I updated to Yosemite last month and found that I had to update a number of apps for them to work with Yosemite. One of them, iPhoto, will not update and won't open until it does. When I try to update, the pop up box says "temporarily unavailable, try again later". I have tried updating "later" for several weeks now. Is there a fix for this or should I return to the previous OS?
