New MBP out-of-box

I know that a new MBP comes with the latest OSX installed, along with every printer driver out there. I'm tempted to do my own OSX 10.11 install with the flash drive I created. Or is that a waste of time and should I assume the "factory" install is good enough. Does a clean install of 10.11 still give the option of skipping printers? With a 1 TB SSD, I was also wondering if anyone ever creates more than one partition on the new SSDs.

El Capitan and spaces view

Is it possible to change the view of spaces by default to be this:

Rather then the default:

Just another step Apple added for me to see what I have on all my other spaces. I like El Capitan, just updated on Friday, much snappier and feels very quick, but again Apple seems to be going backwards in some regards, getting away from simplicity and going more for design then function

VGA projector with 2015 MBP

I'm a bit confused with how to hook up a VGA projector to my new MBP on the way. My older projector doesn't have an HDMI connection, so is it through the Thunderbolt port that I would need an adapter to VGA? Is the Thunderbolt port the same as a Mini Display port?

Thunderbolt, Firewire, USB

Since purchasing a 2015 MacBook Pro 13", I'm thinking ahead of what to do with my 3 FW800/USB/Sata enclosures. I did order the Thunderbolt to FW800 adapter, but, I'm not sure how it will work out with all my enclosures. Will they still be bus-driven? What are some of the better Thunderbolt enclosures out there? Will Apple be leaving Thunderbolt or will there be an integration such as suggested here?

“One port to do it all” – the new integrated USB-C/Thunderbolt 3 port makes it into the first laptop | 9to5Mac

I suppose I could have waited for the 2016 MBP but older peripherals may be excluded all together with the USB-C only port that is predicted.

New MacBook Pro.....

Time to move on from my mid-2010 MBP. I'm not interested in the 15". I like the 13". I know that there are new MBP in the near future but they'll be premium price. I've been recently been checking with the prices of the newest available as well as refurbs. 15% savings is okay, but I sure would like something better. Is there any Black Friday options that Apple Canada usually puts out? I want to purchase through an Apple Gift Card which, through the airmileshops, I can presently get 10X Air Miles. Should I hold off for something on the near horizon? Does anyone know of any annual sales that come up at this time of year?

Do you Like/Dislike the "back" options in Yosemite

I'm relatively new to Yosemite,(10.10.5 - up from 10.6.8), and I'm still uncovering few new "features" which I'm not that thrilled with.

When surfing around to various sites [using Safari] I'm used to clicking on the "Back" button on the upper left menus bar. - worked fine for me.

Now I've discovered that the new (almost invisible) < > is not always there/active. After some considerable time searching, I discovered the tiny (equally invisible) X in the tab above. So now, in the new improved design I have to determine whether to click < or locate the proper tab and click the X.

If Apple wants to close a tab using a hidden button, fine, but why remove the feature form the menu bar? I find it annoying, especially when the text in the table just numbers & does not clearly define which page it links to, and to top it off the text is very small, and hard for my tired old eyes to read.

Anyway, thats my rant for the day,

Anyone happy withe the change?

Advice Please

This is probably an odd request but hopefully I can get some guidance.
I am retired and on a tight budget, my iMac is a 2008 and my MacBook Pro is a 2007.
Both are getting very slow and need to be upgraded to Yosemite, as a minimum, to keep pace with changes to iOS on my iPad.
I have decided that I will stop using the iMac and make the MBP do everything, I have a 22" DVI monitor.
Can I upgrade that to Yosemite (El Capitan) safely?
What could be the down side of such an action?
Should I consider one of the newer use MBP in Classified and what should be the oldest I should consider?
I cannot justify the cost of a new one on my budget.
Any suggestions and/or advice would be great appreciate.

VW Diesel and emissions scandal

Blatant fraud choking us out. Wherever I travel I see more VW's broken down on the side of the road than any other vehicle. In North America, the Dodge Caravan gets an honourable mention though.

Very unhappy with VW for the diesel fraud, seems they also deliberately put cheat devices into high performance VW, Audi and Porsche vehicles too. Subaru makes a boxer diesel that they will not bring into North America because the performance an mileage would be terrible to meet emission standards. So VW cheated.

Long ago when I was a broke hippy dippy young dude travelling around in my VW Bus, had an electrical problem and a little hole in the exhaust. Well, in the far north could not fix it myself, and no mechanic wanted to touch it. So I sputtered into the local VW dealer asking them to patch it up so I could get home.

They refused to touch it unless I bought a brand new VW muffler for $500. They refused to bring in the aftermarket one for $200, or fix the electric problem until I had this fixed. This was big bucks back then, so I was really pissed off that they would not give me a break, and prefer to leave me stranded.

After I got the Kraut Can home, I sent a letter to the dealer and VW Canada about my displeasure. The response I got basically said screw you. I haven't owned a VW product since. the people I know that have them, all seem to be plagued with a lot of expensive repairs and break downs regardless of the model. There seem to be a few stories out there about people having bad experiences with the dealers as well.

If you care about the environment, your budget (the VW repair costs kill any advantages that the fuel economy gives you), corporate integrity, don't get a VW.

Fastest configuration for external SSD to drive old iMac?

Hello

I'm buying a fast SSD with firewire 800 enclosure to speed up my 2009 iMac. Said Mac cannot be upgraded to a fusion drive and installing an internal SSD is a pain - so a FW800 it is. May not be as fast as a SATA connection but I think it's the latency on the HD that is the problem...

The next question is what should I put on my SSD. Here are my choices:

- OSX
- General library
- Apps & utilities
- My user library
- Other user libraries

Then I can leave this on the old HD:

- My music and my photos
- Same for other users
- Local data folder, including large mail file
- Local copy of my synched Dropbox

Does this make sense? Do the libraries have to be on the same drive as the OS? Would I get better speed/reliability with a different configuration? Can I daisy chain the OS disk with my photo backup disk (also FW800)?

Finally, do I just drag/copy or start from a clean install of 10.11 on the SSD and use migration assistant?

Thanks!

PS: the original HD is 1TB, the new SSD is 0.5TB. Everything is backup up to a networked time capsule.

Wanted To Buy Display Data Cable For 2011 iMac 21.5"

I've had to open up my imac a few times for cleaning, removing defective Superdrive and installing an SSD. In the process, the data cable that goes from the logic board (part # 593-1350 B) to the display got damaged.
I managed to re-bend the micro contact pins on the connector-end of the cable and it's working ok now but need to replace it I believe.
Anyhow, I've seen them on Amazon but shipping is ($4.02 in the US, $29.99 to Canada) more than the actual cost of the cable.
From eBay it's an unknown brand name from China, so not sure if the quality would be the same as an original OEM. Local Apple service centre says he can't sell new OEM parts to me and doesn't have a used one to spare.
Anyone have an old broken iMac with a good cable they would sell?

Anybody put a SSD in a 2009 MBP?

As I've still got the original 160GB drive in my mid 2009 MBP, I think its due for an upgrade. Is it worth putting a 250GB SSD in this thing? Know, Ive seen the youtube vids showing how fast it will start up, but I rarely reboot the machine anyway. I assume that it would be a little bit snappier, but I've also read plenty of people complaining that after an initial speedy period, their SSDs eventually slowed down. And is it worth having to worry about such things as Trim Control? The mid 2009 is only SATA 2 as well, so max speed is 3GB.

Anybody done it?

Good Source for Replacement MBP battery?

I've got a Mid 2009 Macbook Pro and the battery is finally giving up on me.

Over the years I've upgraded the RAM and installed a SSD and this machine is still going strong so have no need to replace it at this point.

There are many sellers on eBay selling batteries for approximately $50. Some even go to the trouble of saying that they are not fakes or reproductions. I'm not sure I actually believe this though.

I don't mind paying more for a battery if it is actually better, but don't want to get ripped off either.

Where are people getting their replacement batteries? Are the eBay ones ok?

At least 18 people were killed in an outbreak of explosions and at least one shootout in Paris Friday, according to police. It was unclear if the events were linked.

Police in Paris told NBC News that several people had been shot at a restaurant in the 10th arrondissement in Paris, and The Associated Press reported that there were fatalities at the Bataclan theater, where hostages were being held.

'Couldn't You Just Keep Your Knees Together?'

Federal Court Judge Under Review For Berating Sex Assault Complainant

Quote:

Robin Camp sat on Alberta provincial court when he asked, 'Couldn't you just keep your knees together?'

The Canadian Judicial Council is reviewing the conduct of a Federal Court judge who questioned the efforts of a sexual assault complainant to fend off her attacker.

The council announced Monday it will review the behaviour of Robin Camp during a 2014 case he adjudicated while serving as an Alberta Provincial Court judge. The case involved the alleged rape of a 19-year-old woman by a Calgary man, whom she accused of sexually assaulting her over a bathroom sink during a house party.

The review comes after a complaint from four law professors at Dalhousie University and the University of Calgary who described Camp as "dismissive, if not contemptuous" toward sexual assault laws and the rules of evidence.

Free live streams without Adobe Flash?

For many years it has been possible for anyone with a fast enough Internet connection to watch free live streams of sports from around the world. Most of these streams require the installation of Adobe Flash and will not work without it regardless of which operating system or browser is used.

The problem now is that in recent months Flash has been exposed as a serious security risk. It is so bad that in spite of numerous updates privacy and computer security advocates have recommended its removal from computers and other devices. Flash is not even available for devices that use iOS as Apple long ago recognised its weaknesses. Smart stream suppliers such as YouTube have responded by ensuring that their streams can be viewed without Flash. However the live sports stream providers are lagging behind as their streams still cannot be viewed without Flash.

Please provide names and links to free live sports streams that may be viewed without Flash (and without having to register and provide one’s life history to some betting scam). Thanks.

Norman Lloyd: 101 and still kicking.

Having lost so many cherished actors in recent years, here's a good news story: Actor Norman Lloyd (who I remember most fondly as Dr. Daniel Auschlander on the medical drama St. Elsewhere) is still acting at age 101. Looking good, too!

Norman Lloyd on upstaging Orson Welles and playing tennis with Chaplin

Norman Lloyd got his start in the theater decades ago before making the move to motion pictures, working along the way with such iconic figures as Orson Welles, Alfred Hitchcock, Jean Renoir, and Charlie Chaplin.

* * *

This year, Lloyd became Hollywood’s oldest working actor when he appeared in Judd Apatow’s Trainwreck, which is now available on home video. Given that he was less than a month away from his 101st birthday when he spoke to The A.V. Club, it seems fair to say that Lloyd is also the oldest actor ever interviewed for Random Roles.

The company says that it might take a few additional days to make it into its retail stores, but that online sales begin on Wednesday.

Alongside the 12.9-inch Retina display, 64-bit A9x chipset and claimed 10-hour battery life is a range of accessories that include the Apple Pencil and the Smart Keyboard, which Apple claims turns the device into a real productivity powerhouse.

Lest We Forget (2015)

The Halifax Chronicle-Herald has a nice pre-Remembrance Day article, published today:

At the Great War's battlefields, where courage and sorrow still sing

Chronicle Herald news editor Christine Soucie Madill visits Flanders Fields and other battlegrounds of Belgium and France, where thousands of brave Canadians are buried and commemorated
It was a stirring moment during a recent four-day tour of First World War sites in Flanders, Belgium, and northern France. On our final day, at the Army Museum in Brussels, our guide opened a notebook and, in a reverent tone recited John McCrae’s poem, In Flanders Fields, in English and in Flemish, a translation he had written himself.

McCrae’s name was uttered with the utmost respect by many of the Belgians I met. They honour the former poet and army doctor at Essex Farm, a memorial site and cemetery, and In Flanders Fields is the name of the museum in Ypres.

It is not surprising that the name McCrae would resonate in Belgium. After all, Flanders Fields are their fields.

One hundred years later, these fields are farmland and there are many small picture-perfect towns. But there are ghosts and constant reminders; it is not possible to drive more than several kilometres through the countryside without seeing memorials and cemeteries.

Landscape vs portrait view

This is stupid but my new iPhone 6S shows only "portrait" mode. When I rotate the phone 90 degrees, it doesn't switch. Probably a simple fix but I can't find it in settings.

Odd Trash Behaviour In El Capitan

When trashing a file from the Finder, I always use command, delete after defining the file.

On three occasions now since upgrading to El Capitan, I get an error message that says something to the effect that, "This action cannot be performed since it requires two other items to complete the process" or something like that. (I should have taken a screen shot, but did not).

The same warning appears if I try to manually drag the file to the trash. The only way I can get the trash to accept a file after it appears is to do a restart and then things return to normal for week or so.

Anyone else come across this behaviour in El Capitan?

iTunes errour message "can't find original file".

I suddenly am getting the message when I try to open a song that iTunes can't because "the original file is longer findable". I have similar problems with iPhoto...
All this since a botched attempt to do a CCC clone of all Users folders from my old MB to MBP.
I checked this thread : " External iTunes library question" including checking the iTunes Library.itl folders. I have several, none of which has anything in it.
I'm thinking I should start over. Make a better clone of my old MB, if I can. Delete all my User files from new MBP. And attempt another clone of my User files from old MB.
How do I get safely rid of my current User folders and files on my MBP?
And how do I eliminate duplicates on the last clone of my MB? (Which I, by mistake , cloned to itself. Interesting image.)
I also got this message when I verified Disk Permissions. ATTENTION*: le fichier SUID «*System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/http://ift.tt/1MPIjyg a été modifié et ne sera pas réparé.(Fairly clear I think. In short, the file was modified and won't be repaired.) Does this have anything to do with the problem?
Thanks.
David

National Geographic: Murdoch Strikes!

What a sad, sad end to what was an amazing institution....

National Geographic Society sets biggest layoff in its history

The National Geographic Society of Washington will lay off about 180 of its 2,000 employees in a cost-cutting move that follows the sale of its famous magazine and other assets to a company controlled by Rupert Murdoch.

The reduction, the largest in the organization’s 127-year history, appears to affect almost every department of the nonprofit organization, including the magazine, which the society has published since just after its founding in 1888.

The reduction also will affect people who work for the National Geographic Channel, the most profitable part of the organization. Several people in the channel’s fact-checking department, for example, were terminated on Tuesday

Apple App Updates downloads

If you go to Macupdate.com, you'll see Apple Messages App 9.0 available, but, when clicking on it, you have to choose "leave macupdate.com" and then the App Store will eventually start up but only for El Capitan. I found this sam behaviour when trying to download the newest Safari. If I go to Apple Software Updates below, none of these updates show. I find this strange.

Apple Has Enough Cash To Buy Every Major Sports Team In The World

That's a lot of dough . . .

Quote:

Though Wall St. didn’t seem terribly impressed, Apple last week delivered yet another stellar earnings report. Riding on the back of strong iPhone sales, Apple posted revenue of $51.5 billion and a quarterly profit of $11.1 billion. As Tim Cook noted, “fiscal 2015 was Apple’s most successful year ever.”

By the time Apple’s October quarter came to a close, the company found itself sitting on a cash hoard worth $206 billion, a figure that’s higher than the GDP of many countries. With $206 billion, Apple could theoretically afford to give every single person in the United States (assuming a population of 318.8 million) $646, effectively the cost of a brand new iPhone.

Even more interesting is that Apple has enough cash to buy every single team from every major sports league in the world. Here’s how the calculations all break down.

Original iPhone Version 1 (2g). Can it be reset to factory?

I just bought a 2007 original iPhone. In quite good condition, and a decent battery it seems. It's stuck on the "connect to iTunes graphic", is there any hope to get this back to factory settings? I will only be needing this iPhone to work via wifi, at the most. I really just want to see the original factory icons etc., rather than its current useless state.
Purchased only to add to my collection, as a novelty piece.

Somebody Just Claimed a $1 Million Bounty for Hacking the iPhone

Quote:

Over the weekend, somebody claimed the $1 million bounty set by the new startup Zerodium, according to its founder Chaouki Bekrar, a notorious merchant of unknown, or zero-day, vulnerabilities.

The challenge consisted of finding a way to remotely jailbreak a new iPhone or iPad running the latest version of Apple’s mobile operating system iOS (in this case iOS 9.1 and 9.2b), allowing the attacker to install any app he or she wants with full privileges. The initial exploit, according to the terms of the challenge, had to come through Safari, Chrome, or a text or multimedia message.

Just bought Drive Genius 4. Think I got a bargain - $40.00 (US, I assume). However, DG4 doesn't seem to repair permissions. It says dskutil did not recognize verb "repair Permissions"; type "dskutil" for a list.
Has anyone had the same problem? Were you able to fix it?
