Happy New Year To You All!

As the end of the year ticks down on ehMacland, members are busy celebrating the upcoming year in their own special ways. Those in Newfoundland and Labrador in just over an hours time and our westerly neighbours in BC with about six hours to go.

I never was a fan of the noise and parties that seem to be the norm for so many people. I have memories of attending more of them that I would rather forget. Oh, sure there were a couple of memorable ones, but mostly there were ones that I wished I was home with my feet up, a nice glass of brandy in my hand and the company of the very special lady that has made my life complete over these past 50 years of marriage.

I wish you all a healthy and prosperous new year, (although that will be a very hard row to hoe in Alberta next year and the two following given our new socialist overlords.) ;)

I hope you all have a safe and happy celebration, whatever way you choose to ring in the new year. A special wish for those here who have become fast friends over the 15 years I have had the privilege of knowing you, both those online and in person.

HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL!

Updating Old iMac - Splitting Hairs?

My mom has a 2007, 20" iMac with 2Ghz processor and 1GB of RAM. I have the chance to get a 2008, 24" with a 2.8Ghz processor and 4GB of RAM.

If I just upgrade the RAM on the 2007 to 4GB will that suffice for a web-browsing mother? I'll be able to update it to El Capitan if it has 4GB of ram, no? Would she get that much more power for just browsing the web and using FB with a 2008 machine? That would save her some $$$ if we can just upgrade the RAM on the 2007.

Any insight would be great.

Happy new year!

FireFox Update Fail

A few days ago I noticed that FireFox had an update (v43.x) available. Held off until I had done my year end clean-up and system back-up.

Completed all that yesterday then noted that the update had been withdrawn and my old version 42 was once again up to date. A bit of an internet search revealed a ton of issues with this one, so when it does reappear I will be in no hurry to install it.

One of two reasons I always go with manual updates!

IPad mini repair (updated) - I HATE ALL THIS WHITE

Recently i took my iPad mini to a repair shop after cracking the screen, and a month of back and forth for a crappy repair job (the left side of the screen stopped working), they finally "fixed" it.But soon after the 90 day warranty expired, the left side of the screen stopped working again.

Anyhow, to make a long story short, i ended up, thru them, getting a reburbished repalcement iPad. Nice, but its running the latest non-jailbreakable iOS, 9.2. My biggest regret was losing my 9.0.2 jailbreak that allowed me to install Nightmode and Eclipse, two UI modifications that tone down this glaring white interface. And ADS. OH. MY. GOD. I had no idea adblocker stopped this many ads. YIKES!

I miss my jailbreak for these reasons alone, but mostly, i wish Apple would give us the option of switching from middle-of-the-night-retina-scorching white to a more suble gray or black. Am I alone with this?

iPhone 3s "Notes" : Recovery Apps for "Notes" Disappeared: Any Recommendations?

iPhone 3s "Notes" : Recovery Apps for "Notes" Disappeared: Any Recommendations?

Hi,

I was in the midst of typing a "Note" on my iphone 3s, iOS6.1.6,
when the "Note" suddenly disappeared!

Is there a way to recover this "Note"?

This would not have been backed up, as I was in the midst of typing it, on my iPhone 3s.

I am wondering if anyone here at ehMac, can recommend from experience of using any particular software that is trouble free and effective.

Thank you.

getting files from time machine after clean install

I did a clean install of a work iMac. It has a fresh new install of El Capitan. I normally transfer the mail settings over manually, copying the com.apple.mail.plist.lockfile and .comapple.mail.plist

I made a mistake and copied com.apple.MAPS.plist, so it obviously does nothing for getting mail setup.

Now I have a time machine backup plugged into an airport basestation. The problem is when I plug in the hard drive it directly onto the mac, it only shows me a Sparse Disk Image Bundle file. On my iMac with my TimeMachine backup plugged in (not via airport) it shows folders and I could manually go to find what i want if I wanted to.

I was planning on doing that and just pulling the correct preference file and be on my way.

Not sure what to do with this space disk image bundle file, I am transferring it over right now as it works faster then off of the drive. Do I just double click and open it?? Is there anyway I can search this to find the file I need? I tried connecting to holding down "option" as I clicked the Time Machine icon to view other backups, but it did not work.

Migration assistant via ethernet failure

I've been trying to run migration assistant on two Mac Minis. Computer 1 is running El Capitan and Computer 2 is running Snow Leopard.

I've attached an Ethernet Cable between them and disconnected Wi-Fi on both.

I have used Network Preference to manually edit the IP addresses: Computer 1 is 192.168.1.10 and Computer 2 is 192.168.1.11.

I have set Computer 2 to share files.

However, under Migration Assistant (activated on both Minis) Computer 1 and Computer 2 do not see each other.

Have I made an obvious error?

Kernel panic: does this warrant some worrying?

Hi all,

A few days ago (right before my holiday celebrations, of all days), my mid-2014 retina MacBook Pro had its first kernel panic. Everything restarted and the machine seems to be working okay, but I'm still worried about it, and I was hoping someone on here with more experience reading KPs could tell me about the root cause of it.

I've quoted the KP below. Also worth mentioning that, after working on something for a while all day and night, and I did a terrible thing and kept my computer asleep for a few weeks on end without shutting down or restarting. Is that enough to cause a KP?

Thanks in advance!
Erica

How to get old iOS app versions

Download Old Versions of iOS Apps with a Clever Workaround
Ever get an update to an iOS app that just completely destroyed the app and made it terrible? There’s a way to roll back to older versions if you’re willing to jump through some hoops.

The process for downgrading apps differs slightly between OS X and Windows. On a Mac, you’ll need an app called Charles, while on Windows you’ll need Fiddler.

Phone upgrades and hand-me down-ing

So.. tomorrow I'm going to get a new iPhone (6 or 6S, not entirely sure yet), which will free up my iPhone 5.

Does anyone know if once the iPhone 5 is unlocked from Fido, will my wife be able to use it on Bell?

Unlocking an iPhone

What's the latest ways/procedures for unlocking an iPhone? I want to give my old iPhone 5s to my other half. I'm on Fido, she's on Rogers. In the past, I've just called Fido and they have unlocked the phone for a $50 charge.

Have things changed?

Games that work with iOS 4.2.1 ???

So I gave my son a hand me down an 8gb iPod Touch (Probably a second gen because it's running 4.2.1). so far after searching the app store for the past two days I haven't found one compatible game! Any Suggestions? Surely when this thing was new there were games that worked for it! Did Apple just delete them? Would be nice to be able to search the app store based on what's compatible. Thanks for any suggestions!

Cheers!

Fido Upgrades at an Apple Store

Can I upgrade my Fido phone at an Apple Store or do I have to go through Fido?

Btw, anyone who is in Fido with Fido dollars, you might want to find a way to cash them in, the local Fido store associate mentioned that she believes they will be doing away with the program sometime in 2016.

Ditched iPhone 4S

So it was time to upgrade my phone iPhone 4S, which as worked well for me from the day it first came out.
I decided NOT to go with apple again. I got (hasn't come in yet) the new NEXUS 6P.
The price was right $0. After reading all specs it and what I do with it I found that it was worth going this way instead of getting the 6. The 6s wasn't an option...can't justify the price for the upgrade.
I was looking at all the apps I use on my 4S and they're all available on the 6P.
I am an apple guy, so this switch has surprised a lot of my friends, even my kid asked why....LOL.
A buddy of mine has the older NEXUS by motorola, and I was playing around with it and I liked what I saw.
Anyway now the wait to see how this works.

Java Troubles

I tried to remove Java from my machine (10.11.2). I thought I got everything, I found some instructions to help remove Java by using the Terminal. I entered the command and thought everything was good.

Now I get these annoying popups "To use the "java" command-line tool you need to install a JDK."

I've tried re installing Java and then uninstalling to no avail. Any suggestions to getting rid of it once and for all?

DVD burning problems in Yosemite

OK, I understand many ehMac members do not use their Superdrive, but I do - a lot!

I’m transitioning to Yosemite 10.10.5 & until now most problems were not fatal. However, after installing the latest Security update I’m unable to burn DVDs with Toast Titanium. (Writing starts, but fails shortly before completion )

I initially thought my Superdrive had failed, but in researching the problem I found a few references to disc burning failing under Yosemite.

I switched back to 10.6.8 and succeeded in burning the same file/video to DVD.

I’m now trying to determine where the fault lies.

Have any members experienced DVD burning problems under Yosemite?

Transfer Files From Old User To New User

With what started with the latest El Capitan upgrade about ten days ago that went horribly wrong, I’m now plagued with the dreaded Finder (Application Not Responding) problem.

Safe boots, doing fsck -fy, removal of the finder plist, using disk utility (no problems), OnyX, dozens of times, which was for nought. Even tried the latest Disk Warrior and the latest TechTool Pro. They didn’t find any problems. I’ve also started up in Disk Recovery and used it’s Disk Utility. No problems found.

No problems were found on the external hard drives.

The latest EtreCheck found no problems.

I’ve done my best to turn Spotlight indexing.

I tried two new user accounts and the guest account, wasn’t impressed with the results, so I trashed the two new accounts and turned off the guest account.

I did use the sharing folder.

One problem I had with these accounts, was that I didn’t know how and what files to transfer from the old account to the new account.

What is the best way to transfer info from an existing users account to a new users account?

I’ve performed numerous searches, and have about ten answers so far.

The latest decent Time Machine backup (before the failed OS upgrade) was mistakenly botched by me.

I ended up reinstalling the latest OS by going recovery route, just after the failed upgrade. I don’t wish to do that again unless I really have to. Before going the Recovery route, I did copy the users folder to an external hard drive. It is actually more recent than the Time Machine copy was, because Time Machine had quit doing hourly backups. The latest backup was about a week old.

A footnote, Mail, Safari, and Text Edit, still work without hangups. Finder in the Dock presently shows Application Not Responding in grey, not black. But not listed as having a problem in either Force Quit Applications (showing) or Activity Monitor - All Processes (not showing).

So, I’m now ready to attempt again to add a new user, and successfully transfer the files from the old account, to the new account.

But this time I’d like to know before hand what files I should and shouldn’t transfer.

Two year old, 27 inch iMac. Three TB HD with about 85% free space.

Has anyone scooped one yet, and if so - thoughts?

We have one @ work, and it is massive - although gorgeous. I had the NYT loaded and it almost felt like holding an actual paper. ;)

But I'm still uncertain about it's pricing and positioning in the product lineup. But if you absolutely don't want a Macbook Air, I guess this might be a good option.

HomeKit - Failing Remote Access

Okay, so I've installed some Lutron Caseta wireless switches and then have the associated hub so I can control the switches via my iPhone and Siri. I also rigged up my best thermostat to work with Siri. It works well at home, however remote access does not work (i.e. Outside of the house on 3G/LTE)

Going by the old method of needing an AppleTV signed into iCloud, I have done that and it worked once for 10 minutes. Otherwise it doesn't work and trying to set it up and troubleshoot is frustrating.

Has anybody set up anything that supports HomeKit? And does it work outside of your network at all?

Move to new iMac and OS

HI all,

Been a while, but I should report that I got rid of my 2.4 GHZ iMac and moved up to an i5 that's running El Capitan. I've been with Snow Leopard forever and this is my first "new" Mac that has the current OS installed.

I'm impressed thus far with the machine and the new OS, but felt I had to upgrade to 12 Gig of RAM just to run the OS more smoothly. Wow, this OS is a memory hog!

Anyone noticed how SLOW the boot time is though? Any fixes?

Need some iTunes help Here!

Set-Up: Mid 2010 27” iMac, 2.93 GHz Intel Core i7, 2Tb, 12 GB Ram
Migrated from OSX10.6.8 to Yosemite 10.10.5
iTunes 12.3.1.23, iTunes media files & library is on an external G Tech 4 Tb HD
Media files 99% video = approx 1.56 Tb

Problem: Over the last 6-8 weeks, iTunes has become erratic.
Normally I open/start iTunes and it will run just fine serves Apple TV via ethernet

However iTunes has started to “break” - when I start iTunes it will frequently report “iTunes Library 2015-0x-xx” is not a valid library, and will mark it damaged and start a new empty library file - loosing the link to all my media. I’ve had enough practice, I can now re-link the media quickly, but it has become very annoying.

So now, before i re-link all the files again, I want to check all the options and make sure I have everything organized as it should be.

A) I see there is an update available for iTunes 12.3.2 - anyone with experience with this?

B) I’m wondering if I should ditch Yosemite & move on to El Capitan.
I hesitate because I have mostly older versions of various apps ie CS3
(BTW Everything ran perfectly under 10.6.8 - I still have it, maybe I should move back?)

I’m wondering if the iTunes library files should be on the boot drive?
When iTunes creates a new library database, it puts it on the external HD along with the Media files, but not always in exactly the same place, ie. it is now located - External Drive/iTunes Two/Reserved iTunes Files/iTunes Library 2015-12-18
it was located at . External Drive/iTunes Two/Previous iTunes Libraries/iTunes Library 2015-11-11.
Is there a preferred organized layout?

My fall back may be to set up my old G4 running Snow Leopard to handle iTunes, and just leave it running constantly - have to buy another new UPS
FYI - I generally shut down each night due to less than solid electrical power and sometimes erratic internat. Previously I’ve lost some equipment to power surges & lightning.

Anyway, I’d like to hear your suggestions/recommendations

hdiutil convert iso to img --> Not working

This is driving me nuts.

Maybe I'm just over-tired, but I can't see an error in my syntax, or paths, or filenames, etc.

It just doesn't bloody work.

Trying to convert a linux ISO to an IMG file for burning onto a USB stick (rescuing an old iMac G4).

I have a valid Ubunto ISO sitting in my /Downloads/ folder.

I want the resulting IMG (which hdiutil will make into a DMG, I know) on my desktop.

So:

I don't get an error, I just get the prompt for proper usage.

What the heck am I doing wrong?

Opening Multiple Images video issue

Just noticed something when selecting around 8 images ranging in size between 2-3 MB and choosing Open With in Pixelmator (not sure if this is app related or not). Half way through opening the batch, the rest will be just dark images. When starting to close some, the next one may be checkerboard but no image showing. This is on my brand new (refurbished) early 2015 MBP 13 inch. Should I be concerned with this as it might be a video card issue?

Note: Just tried opening 15 in GraphicConverter and had no such issue at all. Must be app related?

Reclaiming a partition: small issue

It what is almost a double entendre, I do have a small issue.

Amidst all the OSX update that were taking place, and seemingly overnight, I had created some small partitions (30G) to give the OS's a quick run just in case to feel them out (I do this @ work).

had a main 10.9, with another 10.9 which were my 2 main ones (one is for everyday, and the other is for tinkering w/ music)

then I had two smaller ones of 10.10 and 10.11 to test out.

I went to delete the 10.10, and reclaim it. After deleting it, I dragged the window (in disk utility) and hit apply, got that animated bar, and nothing else. The 30G remains unclaimed.

Any quick insights before I escalate this? ;)

Thanks - and cheers.

Resizing Images

Been doing some trial runs with 2 different apps in resizing images- Pixelmator and Affinity Photo.
Taking a 6 MB image, when resizing it to 99% with no resampling, the image shrinks to 3.2 MB. When doing the same thing in Affinity Photo, it increases to 7.4 MB. I would think that these 2 apps probably use different alogorythms. But, if having to choose between the 2 apps, I would tend to go with Pixelmator due to the smaller file size.

El Capitan > Disk Utility > Security Options ??

You might want to keep your USP Yosemite installer available.... It is the last version with several well used features.

There are several familiar functions no longer in the El Capitan version.

As discussed here in Apple Support Communities Disk utility in El Capitan installer does not have security option. You can no longer write zeros to perform a "nuke 'n' pave" at least in El Cap. I simply boot up it the Yosemite version to erase and write zeros. Apparently this is because there has been bad interactions betweeen the security features and certain SSD drives.

You can no longer repair permissions (IMHO it never did anything worthwhile anyway). The new SIP system renders it redundant. See Hands-on with Disk Utility in El Capitan: Tool for storage devices gets a facelift | Macworld. Once again if you save your Yosemite installer there is always the Yosemite Disk Utility with all the usual features in the usual places.

So resist the urge to overwrite your Yosemite installer with the latest El Cap......

You might just be glad you did!! :)

iPad mini 2 repair. Any suggestions? I cannot take it to Apple.

In August of this year, I dropped my iPad mini 2, which WAS in a case, but had no protective screen. Sure enough, it fell screen first and hit a rock and the screen cracked.

Since my iPad was out of warranty, I decided that I didn't want to spend almost $300 for Apple's out-of-warranty repair, so I took it to a repair shop (BuynCell) instead. What a mistake that was.

After a whole month of back and forth repairs (the screen replacement was supposed to take 2 hours, but ended up taking 3 weeks instead because somehow they screwed up the connections and only half the screen would respond), the screen was finally "fixed" with a 90 day warranty.

EXACTLY 30 days after the warranty was up, the left side stopped responding again. I talked to the owner and he claimed that he would do the repairs again at a discount, but I am hesitant to take it back there.

Can anyone recommend a reliable and profession iDevice repair shop in the GTA? I definitely cannot take it to Apple now, so I need to find the next best thing.

external hard drive keeps ejecting

So I updated to El Capitan last week. Love the speed of the OS, and everything is working as it should with my apps and such. I am having an issue with my external hard drive. It is a 4 bay Vantec USB3 enclosure, using only 1 bay at the moment. It has a 2TB drive in there that has been in there about 2 years now. Since the update to El Capitan the drive randomly ejects, does not seem to be anything specific happening that I can pinpoint. Sometimes happens when the iMac goes into screen saver mode, or happens when using safari, or not doing anything at all.

Anyone else experience this? Not sure what I can even check here to find a solution for this other then buying a new external hard drive and plugging it in.

Compressing Files, etc.

I have yet to find an app for compressing files that actually compresses them a good amount. Can't figure out how an App Developer can provide a 200MB download that actually expands into 700MB when something like Stuffit will only compress a 700MB file to only 650MB or the like.

Safari infected with Easyadventurewayy.com

Hi All,

My nephew was using my computer for a bit. I came on right now and safari keeps loading up to easyadventurewayy.com and I can't get out of it. My options are leave page, or cancel, but neither one allows me to escape. I can't even quite safari nor get to the preferences.

I have to force quit the program. I did a search online, but most sites were recommending I install programs to get rid of the malware. There must be a way to remove this junk without installing more junk.

Any ideas?

Dropbox: Carousel & Mailbox are dead.

Dropbox Kills Mailbox, an App It Bought for $100M
AS IT REFOCUSES on business customers, Dropbox said today that it’s shutting down two of its once-marquee consumer-oriented apps: the photo gallery app Carousel and email client Mailbox.

The good news is that your Carousel photos aren’t going anywhere—they’ll still be stored in your Dropbox, where they’ve always been. Dropbox is even working to integrate some of Carousel’s functionality into the core Dropbox app interface. Mailbox users, however, will have to find a new email app by February 26, 2016, when the service that the Mailbox apps depend on will shut down.

Moving Mail folders to Gmail

I think I'm committed to moving entirely to IMAP which means I need to copy over all my Mail local Folders and Sub Folders over to Gmail. I started with a few and it seems as though I have to first create the folder (Label?) in Gmail first and then drag over all the messages. Seems like Mail is really choking up when copying over messages. I can see this is going to take some time as it seems to be slow in copying over. Is there any other better or faster way before I get too deep into it?

why do I need to type in my passcode every 48 hours??

I have an iPhone 6 plus running latest iOS update. I do not remember seeing this in the past with my 5S, but every 48 hours I get prompted to enter my passcode, it will not accept my fingerprint. I find this to be a bit confusing when they say how secure the fingerprint ID is but for a few things like security settings a finger print will not do, you need to enter the code. Same thing goes when restarting, need to enter the passcode again before finger print will work and same with App store/iTunes store, need to type in the password.

Why is this?? It is not a big deal of course, just makes no sense to me.

Window shifts position when scrolling

On our iMac running OSX 10.9.5 Mavericks the window for our browser is set at the maximum vertical size, extending from the top to the bottom of the screen. This shows the maximum amount of a long document or article in the screen and is fine as long as the window stays in the same position. The problem is it does not.

All too often when scrolling down to view the continuation of long documents and articles we find that the browser window suddenly starts moving down. The cursor is positioned over the scroll bar slider on the right of the window, the slider darkens, we start dragging the slider down, scrolling starts and then of its own accord the scrolling stops and the window starts sliding down the screen with the cursor.

Unlike with earlier versions of OSX we do not have the option of placing the cursor on scroll arrows at the bottom of the scroll bar. The only way to scroll down on a long document or article is to place the cursor on the scroll slider and drag the slider down.

We do not want the browser window to reposition or resize unless we make a deliberate action to change it. We particularly do not want this happening when we are trying to scroll down on a long article.

How may I lock the browser window in place on the screen to eliminate these unwanted window repositions when we scroll down?

True Courage

Hopefully, this won't start a flame war about how she was not courageous or the catalyst to an important social movement. We shall see. Paix, mes amis.

Apple 24" display problems (mini display port)

I have an Apple 24" display (the mini display port) that I use as a second screen with my 2009 iMac 27"... for about a month at times the screen would fade as though the brightness was turned way down. Unplugging it and plugging it back in would restore the picture for a day or two until it would happen again. The other day the picture finally died completely. The USB ports on the back still work and power my external usb drives; and a screen shot still shows that the iMac is recognizing that there's a second screen still attached.

My question is.... is this likely a logic board problem? Or could it be the LCD panel? I love this monitor - great quality - I don't really want to get rid of it. If I could determine the problem and buy the part used, I'd go that route. Anyone have any suggestions for what it could be or how I would determine this?

The Most Annoying Television Commercials

Some of today's TV commercials are just so annoying that they have the opposite effect on me in that I would never buy or use the product they supposedly promote. Some of them so utterly phony they defy logic.

You must all have your own pet peeves and please feel free to vent here.

I will begin with just one of mine and that is the guy who either stands in his flooded kitchen, or on a street at night with a sign fallen on his car and conveniently has a tripod with a stop watch on it to see how long it takes for his insurance company to start a claim. Seriously? They want me to believe this crap? I would never buy a policy from these people.

Next?
