Keyboard won't talk to Finder (but does to others)

The keyboard types just fine into word and iTunes but not in the Finder when I want to change the name of a file, for instance. It's a Mac keyboard and it's into my G5. I tried switching ports but no difference.

Why okay in one program but not Finder? How to fix?

Thanks for any help.

Traditional iPod question, re: Notes

Hi,

Looking for some information on the iPod Notes reader, specifically which of the traditional click wheel models have this feature. I'm no expert on these devices, I have an old nano 3G, but if what I read is correct it may be on some/all of these iPods:

- iPod 3G thru 5G
- iPod classic
- iPod mini 1G, 2G
- iPod nano 1G thru 7G

If there are major differences anyone knows about from model to model, I'm interested. I suspect some of the screen sizes and text per line must vary.

The reason is I'm writing a Notes based puzzle game on my nano, and considering releasing it when finished. First I'll have to figure out what other models it may run on, and then try and find owners of said models willing to test it on that hardware and contribute feedback... so the list of suspects is required.

Thanks in advance.

best regards,
et3400

any tips or 'easter eggs' i should look for or need to know with the new feature?

Magic Mouse no gestures with Yosemite

I just dusted off my Magic Mouse which I haven't used in a while and paired it with my Macbook Pro running Yosemite. It works fine except for scrolling. I checked under Accessibility and the scrolling is enabled.

Anyone run into this? The trackpad scrolls just fine but none of the gestures seem to work at all on the Magic Mouse.

Firefox 44.0 - Problems

Just updated to Firefox 44.0 and am having major problems.

When I go to cnn.com, Firefox reverts back to google automatically after a few seconds.
Happens everytime - Chrome is OK
BTW - Google is my Firefox "home page"

Other sites I had bookmarked in the previous version of FF won't load at all.

Is there any way to revert back to the previous issue of FF?
Pretty much all my bookmarks are in FF so using another browser is a PITA.

BTW - FF 44.0 on ehMac is OK so far

The Anti Progressive Thread

So, it seems that some want their own little safe space where they can all bask in the glow of socialism without reproach, 'cause everyone who shows up with facts automatically qualifies as a "lecturer" and a "troll" & the micro-aggressions give them headaches. Wah frickin' wah...

Fine.

This thread is where we'll dissect that little utopia into it's distinct parts & feed it back to them, tenfold.

Everyone welcome here. If you can defend your position with facts, post something. If you can't, consider yourselves beat & go back to the feel good place...

The Progressive Thread

This thread is for forum members who would like to consider some of the positive aspects of progressive governments that have been elected in Canada and its provinces. It is not for the complainers. No trolls please.

There are many other places where one can complain about progressive policies (The Alberta NDP Thread, ironically enough, among others), and so this thread is reserved for those of us who see hope in the changes of the past several months.

For instance, today the Royalty Review was released in Alberta, looking not nearly as scary as some people feared.

Royalties remain the same for Alberta oilsands projects, says Notley | Globalnews.ca

Apple, App Store, and $0.99 pricing in Canada

Apple introduces new $0.99 pricing tier for apps in Canada and New Zealand
The ongoing economic downturn in Canada has started to affect tech users here in numerous ways.

As the dollar drops, prices of mobile devices have risen, and most recently, the price for a ’99 cent’ app on the iOS App Store has hit $1.39. Since customers are already so averse to paying for apps in the first place, Apple chooses to give developers a way to charge for applications based on the buyer’s local currency.

In Apple’s Developer Portal today, the company introduced a new pricing tier for apps in Canada and New Zealand, which is also going through an economic downturn, resulting in a low exchange rate. The new tier will let developers price apps as low as $0.99 in Canada and New Zealand. This allows app makers to presumably sell more copies of their apps in those countries, even if they make less money with each sale.

The prices changes go into effect automatically today, and some $0.99 apps can already be found in the Canadian App Store. These apps are displayed alongside the $1.19 apps from the last pricing adjustment last year, and the $1.39 pricing tier that represents parity with a USD $0.99 app.

Rebate Rant

I bought a bluetooth dongle from ASUS with the promise of a $20 mail in rebate which made it cost about $8.
I go through the whole ordeal of cutting out the UPC, registering online to get the forms, filling out the form, enclosing receipt and mailing to the states.
Today they send me this:

Your Rebate was not approved for the following reason(s):

- Required Documentation missing-Copy of Clear or Legible Receipt/Invoice or Packing List

I know damn well the receipt was printed from NCIX and enclosed and it was perfectly legible.
However the good people at ASUS are willing to give me another chance! Simply download and complete the forms all over again, send in the "missing" pieces and they'll reconsider.

This seems to me like a BS stall tactic in an attempt to get me to throw my hands up and forget the $20. Which is probably exactly what will happen.

Has anyone else encountered this with rebates?

iMovie won't share

Hello Mac universe, I was last asking a question about an issue with iMovie stalling during use back in August. I can't find that thread to add to. It was suggested that I update. So I did, I updated the OS to Yosemite and have updated iMovie several times since. I was able to complete the video I was working on last month (I don't find the new version as user friendly). I have been trying to finalize the video this month. "Finalize" isn't a thing in the Yosemite version of iMovie, just "share". So I've tried multiple times to share to a "file" or "youtube". None have worked. I get a message after it goes through its process "exporting (file name) has failed, the operation could not be completed". What gives? It goes through the whole song and dance just to tell me it can't do it.

Anybody wanna buy a DeLorean?

DeLorean Cars Being Made Again for First Time in 35 Years

A car that's been stuck in the past can now go forward into the future, thanks to a government initiative that's allowing new models to be made for the first time in 35 years, KPRC reports.

DeLoreans—the vehicle made famous in the Back to the Future movie franchise—are heading back into production in Humble, Texas, and it will be the first time the iconic car will be manufactured on American soil.

"It's fantastic. It is a game-changer for us," DeLorean CEO Stephen Wynne tells KPRC. Wynne notes that he's got enough parts to put together about 300 cars, and although he anticipates initial output to be just one car a month, he's hoping to jack that to one a week.

The first car is slated to be finished by early 2017. The anticipated price for one of these future throwbacks: $45,000 to $55,000 for a refurb, a vague "less than $100,000" for a new model.

App store apps - how many installs?

I am looking at a pro app, price is $560 if I buy right from their website. It allows for one user to use the app. I saw that the same app is on the app store for $699.00. I know with other apps I have been able to install it on more then one computer using my apple id. Does this work across the board for apps in the app store or does the software maker have control on limiting how many users with the same apple id can use it?

Gmail messages gone

In the process of moving my local Mail messages (mailboxes) over online to Gmail, and deleting around 2000 messages in Archive (never quite knew what that was), I have lost all my email save what is left locally in my mailboxes (not much). I thought by deleting all the messages in Archive (which appeared to be duplicates), I would save some room. I do see a "Recovered" folder in my Mail app which has quite a few, but I am now concerned with what to do. All my Gmail online folders (labels) are empty. Any suggestions? I probably should have left them all in my local mailboxes.

 Q1 results

I actually came out here to listen to the chatter about the #s, and I found nothing.

has no one looked at them yet?? The rumour is that the iPhone sales are finally flattening out.

Here are the results btw in PDF.

the YoY growth on the iPhone was 1%., and Tim is in fact predicting a fall in sales for the 1st time in it's history.

Equally as interesting, the iPad sales have dropped 21% in revenue, 25% in units. wild.

despite all that, rev is still up.

So, is this the beginning of normalcy? Or is it simply that the 6 to 6s path wasn't compelling enough?

The iPad sales dropped it pretty startling - as I sit here considering an iPad mini. ;)

H!

What Does the Rogers Technician Do - 4K Setup

Hey,

Just wondering if anyone got 4k going with Rogers recently. Content Restrictions iPad (iOS 9.2.1)

Hey all,

I think i know the answer to this already (not possible), but i thought i would check anyways.

Is there any way on the iPad (iPad Air iOS 9.2.1) to enable Restrictions like that of Apple TV?
ie. Still show all Movies and TV Series loaded, but if it's over Rating say G or Y7 to have to put in a passcode to view.

Currently with restrictions ON and content level set, it suppresses all content over the limit (can't even see it's there). You need to go an Disable the Restrictions. That's fine, annoying but okay. However when you disable the restrictions in that process it clears all the settings back to default. There is no suspend or keep history of restrictions to toggle off and on quickly.

I've done some googling and i don't think its possible but maybe someone has a clever idea.

My issue here is not that i don't trust my son (age 6) with the device, its more we are planning a family trip soon. In past i have loaded an old Blackberry Playbook with just his content for car rides and the iPad for my wife an I. I would like to load movies for all members of the family on the iPad and not have to bring two devices. I am hoping there is something like the restrictions on the Apple TV. Currently he has free reign over our our Apple TV for his shows. If he accidentally clicks on the wrong TV series or Movie he is simply prompted for a passcode he does not have. Has never been an issue. I fear on a bumpy plane ride his finger may hit the wrong Movie and bounce into the middle of something inappropriate for him.

Thanks!

BReligon

MPB 2008 curriosity question

I have also got a 2013 MBP, but I am curious as to what caused the older one to quit.

The battery has been no good for a while, but I could use it while plugged in. I lent it out for a few days and while it was gone it quit. Trying to restart gave message something like "computer ran into a problem press any key to restart"

It will start and show options if I press the option key, but once I pick an option - Hard drive: Recover: even re-installation of Mavericks that I tried, I get Apple logo and gear that spins for a bit and then seems to stop.

I mostly use Windows PCs and have run into different types of problems that I manage to solve, but this is the first with a Mac. If the hard drive is toast, would it still boot? Thinking back to the problems I had with my desktop hard-drive I suppose it would.

Any way to "set and lock in" Geolocation?

Commercial websites I visit seem to use "Geolocation" more and more to present the information such as sales & pricing for a specific location where I'm located - trouble is that the location they pick up is always wrong.

So I get the wrong info if the company has region specificv pricing and/or sales.
Some places make it relatively easy on their website to change location, for others there seems to be no way to do that.

I just looked up the geolocation info for my IP address.
There were five sites that listed the geolocation for my IP address.
Three of them showed Toronto, on showed Chatam-Kent and one showed Ottawa.
I'm really located in Cornwall right now.
So none of them are even close.

So - back to my original question....
I assume the answer is "no' -

Petition to get Adobe to fix CS Suite

In Adobe's latest attempt to force a subscription model on everybody, they are 'neglecting' to update some of the bugs caused by El Cap.

Vigorous debate on the Adobe forums about applications crashing, not saving, etc. I must say I had constant crashes with earlier versions with El Cap making Illustrator CS5.5 un-usable. Now it only seems to crash on exit (after I save my work!)

Anyway, a petition is doing the rounds. anyone interested can sign here.

MacPro spyware issue.

OK, MacPro, 10.6.8.

Group emails being sent out by some damn bug, not through Mac Mail. Every couple of days I'll get a bunch of bounced emails with error messages, Mail delivery failed, etc. Check the origin, they've got my email address as the source but there is no corresponding mail in my Sent folder.

Have Avast, ran it, no issues detected.

Contacted Shaw, the rep was helpful but not a Mac guy. He note that I had picked up some spyware somewhere & that it was sending the mail out on its own, not through Mac Mail. He suggested Anti-Malware. Unfortunately only good for 10.8+.

Downloaded ESET Cybersecurity Pro, ran it, no issues, so it didn't detect it.

So, looking for antivirus software, free if possible, that can detect this damn mail spyware issue I have.

Does anyone know of a legacy copy of Anti-Malware that'll run on 10.6.8?

Also, anyway I can stop the outgoing mails with Little Snitch?

TIA.

Has anyone else experienced problems with the site on a Mac? A couple of times today a page will load up, but I've got no access to the vertical scroll bars. Money from website. Have to claim on taxes?

I have been running a small website for 10 years now as a hobby.

Last year i have finally started making some profit.

Profit from website sales. 80$ for the whole year

Profit from ads on my website $200 for the whole year

So my question is. Do i have to claim this on my taxes? Is it even enough to claim? Can they even tax this small amount.

My other question is. My friend told me i should think about registering my hobby as a small busines. He said since i am making a small profit. I can claim my internet and hosting costs.

What percentage of my internet can i claim? 20%? and my hosting. But since i only make around 200 a year i can't claim more than my profit. 200 In my case.

Help! Thanks.

Brands of the past, or not seen so much today!

Leamington is excited about getting the ketchup contract for French's. This lead me to wonder about products that are either not popular today or gone by the wayside.

When I was young you could go into a store and find:
Green Giant, York, Stokley-Van Camp, Libby's Heinz, Del Monte canned vegetables.

Gleem, Ipana toothpaste. Nu-grape, Kik Kola, Stubby, Wilsons, Faygo, soft drinks
and many other brands no longer seen. I was wondering of other brands no longer with us, or seldom seen.

MacBook Pro Upgrade

I would like to be able to use Airplay from my Macbook Pro to my HDTV. I tried using an App called AirParrot a ver that works with OS Snow Leopard but when it came to turn on the audio my Mac was not able to load and run the required driver. I use my laptop for general internet use; watching some videos on live streaming and youtube; photo editing and thats about it. Don't do any gaming at all, not sure if there is an OS to upgrade to that my current system could handle. My serial # entered on the Service and Support Coverage page showed: MacBook Pro (13-inch, Early 2011).
Any tips or advice are welcome.

iPhone clock radio question

okay, howdy everyone here. I've got a question. I have an iPhone 4s with the good ol'
30 pin connector on it. It's slower, but it works. However, I might want to upgrade my iPhone to something more modern. I've been looking at iPhone compatible clock radios
with the newer Lighting connector on 'em and I haven't really found a lot of great options
(in this case, great would include both AM and FM, not just FM), don't really need app-enabled alarm clock, just something that works well, kinda simple to use, sounds good

so, any suggestions welcomed, eg "I'm looking for X......this is where you can buy X"

thanks

WiFi repeatedly dropping

I've not changed a thing on my MacbookPro (Yosemite) in four months, but since just before Christmas, it's been constantly dropping my WiFi connection. The bars remain solid, but there's no connection. It's easy enough to get connected again by switching off WiFi and switching it back on again, and I'd go along with that solution except that the connection will drop again, often just a minute later. It will drop a dozen times or more in a day, more frequently in the evening.

Is this a known issue with Yosemite? Is there a fix? Is the connection any more stable under El Capitan? It's an annoyance I'd like to get rid of. Do any of you know how to fix this?

Problem finally solved -- deleted emails

For the past few years, emails from my 27" iMac would be erased. All that would remain would be the current two weeks. I checked my Mac email settings but I could not find what was causing the emails to be removed. Emails on my iPad, however, were not removed.

Well, I finally found the culprit that was causing their deletion. I do have a PC laptop that runs Windows. The mail program that I use is Thunderbird. On this PC I have two accounts. I opened the preferences on both and checked them out. With one of them, it had a setting to delete messages on the server after 14 days. When I changed this to "Never" the emails on my iMac were not removed.

I don't know how my PC and Thunderbird could affect my Mac but it did.

Last version of iPhoto compatible with Mavericks

I helped my friend update his MBP from OS 10.6 Snow Leopard to OS 10.9 Mavericks yesterday. After the upgrade we found out that his previous iPhoto 9.2.3 would not run in OS 10.9. We searched and found the installer for iPhoto 9.4.3. We downloaded and applied the update. Now iPhoto could launch.

Upon launching there was a prompt that update 9.5 was available on the Mac App Store. But the store showed a message that the item was not available.

What is the last version of iPhoto that is compatible with OS 10.9? It appears that iPhoto 9.5.1 is the last version for OS 10.9. Is there a way to get this updater?

Late 2011 MBp on 10.6 - Upgrade to 10.9 or 10.10 or 10.11?

HI
Title pretty much says it all.

Have a MacBook Pro, late 2011, currently runing on OS 10.6.8
Need to upgrade because some of the software we need to use is no longer supported on Snow Leopard.
Which of the three software releases I mentioned in the title would be the most stable (least problematic) to upgrade to?
10.10 and 10.11 still seem to have their share of problems so I'm tempted to go to 10.9 and then see what happens with 10.12 when it is released in 2016.

Any concensus as to which OS to upgrasde to?

Upgrading MacBook pros with faster RAM

Hi,

I just upgraded two MacBook Pros with faster RAM chips.

One is an early 2011 13-inch MBp, the other a late 2011 MBp.
They both came with 4 GB of 1333 DDR3 RAM, I upgraded each one with two 8GB sticks (ie 16GB per Mac) of 1600 DDR3 RAM.

From reading up on this on the net, I expected the new RAM to clock down the 1333 and be reported as such but when I check system profiler they both get reported as 1600 DDR3.

So does the new RAM actually run at the higher bus speed or does the reporting mechanism just read the info off the RAM regardless of the speed it actually runs at.

And if so, is there some way to check what speed the new RAM actually runs at.

Gene Roddenberry's Computer Conundrum

How Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry's words were freed from old floppy disks

Call the engine room and get Scotty to the bridge: When the long-lost words of Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry were found on 5.25-inch floppies—yes, floppy disks—it would take a Starfleet-level engineering effort to recover them.

Roddenberry, who died in 1991, apparently left behind a couple of shoebox-sized containers of those big floppy disks.

The problem? As any techie knows, floppy drives went out off fashion around the turn of the 21st century. Even if you bought a used 5.25-inch floppy drive off of Cyrano Jones on space station K7, you wouldn't be able to read the files on a modern computer, let alone plug in the drive.

Roddenberry's estate knew of two possible computers the author had used to write those final words. One had been sold off in a charity auction and the second wouldn't boot when plugged in.

BBC, Telegraph and Globe & Mail website problems 2016

Group says BBC website hack was a test for attack on ISIS

?Anti-IS group? claims BBC site attack | Middle East

HARDOCP - BBC Website Hit By Cyber Attack

How widespread are the BBC, Telegraph and Globe & Mail website problems and when are they likely to be solved?

For a couple of days we were unable to access the BBC’s website. Firefox 43.0.3 on an iMac was not able to find the address or the server was not responding. Now on occasion we can get through but only after a wait of several minutes for a page to load. Videos will not play as before as the retarded BBC still requires Flash. Have the Beeb’s website personnel not heard of HTML5 or is there some quid pro quo that is motivating this taxpayer-funded broadcaster to restrict access only to users who install various proprietary apps?

YouTube, Facebook, Netflix and others have replaced restrictive proprietary apps such as Flash and Silverlight with HTML5. What is the Beeb waiting for? Its lethargy gives an unfortunate negative perception!

Other websites we try are working fine with the exception of the Telegraph, Globe & Mail and a number of sports live streams. Videos on the Telegraph and Globe & Mail websites will not play. Clicking on the Telegraph's start arrow results in a blank white space. Again the suspicion is that access has been deliberately restricted to users who install some proprietary app. Globe & Mail videos will not play and advise us to update our non-existent Flash Player. Again, has the G&M not heard of HTML5?

Media website designers with common sense, intelligence, competence and integrity would ensure that websites for major media operations are accessible to the widest possible proportion of the public, including the vast number who for one reason or another do not have the very latest software version or various proprietary apps.

Malheur National Wildlife Refuge, Oregon takeover

Full Story on What’s Going on In Oregon – Militia Take Over Malheur National Wildlife Refuge In Protest to Hammond Family Persecution…

Quote:

Many people will awaken today to the news of approximately 100 to 150 armed militia taking control of a closed Wildlife Park Headquarters, and not know the full back-story – so here it is:

The short summary is: in an effort to draw attention to a ridiculous arrest of a father and son pair of Oregon Ranchers (“Dwight Lincoln Hammond, Jr., 73, and his son, Steven Dwight Hammond, 46,) who are scheduled to begin five year prison sentences (turning themselves in tomorrow January 4th 2016), three brothers from the Cliven Bundy family and approximately 100/150 (and growing) heavily armed militia (former U.S. service members) have taken control of Malheur Wildlife Refuge Headquarters in the wildlife reserve. They are prepared to stay there indefinitely.

Restoring 2009 iMac with USB Thumb Drive

I actually got a really great deal on a late 2009 iMac with 12GB of RAM (overkill?) and a 1TB HD. When I got it home and turned on it had an admin account but it still said 'Amanda's Computer' so clearly it wasn't completely wiped. I have a bootable USB drive with Lion on it so I thought I'd use that. I made the mistake of just wiping the HD in Disk Utility thinking I could boot it up in restore mode but I don't have the startup disks - just a bootable copy of Lion on a USB key.

Can someone post a link or Youtube video that shows me how to install Lion? I tried one that said to hold down 'alt key' and it was suppose to show the USB that I have plugged in (along with the startup drive) but it didn't. It only showed one drive that said EFI Boot. I googled and it has something to do with TimeMachine? I don't want that. I just want to a clean install with Lion (or any other newish OS)

Help!

Disk Utility?

Ladies, Gents, I've always had success with solutions here. So I'll give it another go.
My "new" Air, frustrated that it "seems' (because it might just be my perception) to have trouble with Flash material. For example, I'm a fan of Slacker and Radio Paradise, more recently, Google Play. When I visit these sites, I'm able to listen to 2-3 songs, on average, then the streaming stops. Stay with me for a moment...
Just to see, I opened my old 2007 MacBook, have been playing between those sites for more than two hours withOUT a single interruption. Crazy.
I checked Adobe Flash Player on the Air. It's enabled. It's current.
I checked the Disk Utility, did a First Aid successfully (I guess). On the Utility, it shows my Mac SD under the APPLE heading. Below that, I see two disk images. "Apple UDIF read only compressed bzip2 Media" for both. one's 'disk 2', one's 'disk 3'. Both about 170 MB. Both with Flash Player listed below the heading.
What IS this? Is it possible that this is contributing to my inability to stream some music through Flash? Do I need these? Should they be deleted?
As my old fart MacBook continues to rock away, I'm befuddled as to why the Air has issues.
Thanks in advance as I'm sure someone will shed light on this.

-Michael.

External HDD Encryption "OSX Built in"

Good day Guys and Gals, i have looked on the forum for it and couldn't find anything on there and hope you guys can shine the light on this.

As most of you know, I bought 2X Xraid ""2004 SFP" one to use and the other for parts" and working like a charm.
I'm curently in the process to buy more hard drive for the Second bank as i'm currently set at 5 TB of Storage with a Hot spare at raid Level 5. Now the big question i have for you is .....

I'm the process of Encrypting my storage. Capacity used is at 2.1 TB and i have started about 2 days ago to encrypt it with the built in OSX Encryption and all. File vault is on for my main SSD bootable Hard drive. "not sure if that is relevant, but worth putting it in there"

The question for you all, how long does it take for this Encryption to Encrypt the External drive of about 2.1 tb worth of data? A few days? a week? :-( and we are talking about Fibre channel connection, not usb or SCSI or anything

or is there also a way to monitor the progress for the encryption?

Thank you ;)
