Looking for good price on Sandisk Extreme Pro 960 GB SSD

Hi All,

The Crucial M550 512GB SSD I put in my mid-2010 MBP made it so snappy I decided to keep it (having the Superdrive is also a big plus for me) but it is getting full so I am looking for a decent price on at 960GB-1TB SSD.

Tom's hardware really likes the Sandisk Extreme Pro sustained-write performance so I am leaning toward that instead of the Samsung 850 EVO.

Amazon has it for $523 from Techdepot and Techdepot Canada itself has it for $541 CAD
ExtremePro SSD 960GB - TECHDEPOT CANADA

Techdepot Canada doesn't seem to be in the computer parts business, though. Has anyone dealt with them or know of another good buy for this drive or the Samsung?

Rogers 3G verus Rogers LTE Network

I currently use a iPAD data plan that works on the Rogers 3G network and was wondering if there is any real difference between that and the LTE network with Rogers as far as everyday web surfing goes. I was planning on just doing a sim swap with my new iPAD and keeping the same plan on the 3G. Thanks for any info or help.

Mac Pro 1,1 + ATI RADEON 3870 + LION

Made a dreadful mistake today going from Snow Leopard to Lion on my Mac Pro 1,1. The computer screen goes black and the computer crashes at random because it seems the ATI Radeon 3870 card is incompatible with Lion.

Does anyone else run Lion on a 1,1? What card are you using?

Worse, when I left the installation alone for a few minutes, instead of the normal log in screen I would expect on a new OS, Lion launched itself and Carbon Copy Cloner kicked in and cloned LIon.

I am looking for an affordable 6Gbps PCIe 2.0 host adapter for my 2008 Mac Pro 3,1 so that I can install a new SSD, and take advantage of the fast 6Gbps link speed (the Mac Pro only has a native 3Gbps link speed).

I have lots of old iMacs for sale but not sure how to price them as I've been out of touch with the prices for a while. iMac's G3's some with firewire others without. the Aluminum iMac is empty shell with some parts in it. 21.5 inch 2010 I believe. White iMac bubble is 20 inches. It used to work but now all I hear is the fan screen doesn't turn on. I also have a green wired keyboard and an older grey Powerbook with power adapter. iMac spinning ball of death

Hey ehMacers....

I've been trying to remotely troubleshoot a friend's iMac (24-inch, mid-2007, 6gb RAM, ATI Radeon HD 2600 Pro 256mb).

Nearing my wit's end, I thought i'd open it up to suggestions in case I haven't thought of something.

She has been running 10.9.5. Since nothing seemed to improve performance, we upgraded to El Capitan. The computer is running *slightly* better, but still not functional.

The SPOD is pretty much constant.

Non-specific to any particular App.

Mail seems to be the worst affected, but Pages 5 and Photoshop CS4 also unusable, Finder frequently locked up with SPOD.

A wait of anywhere from 30 secs to several minutes before control is returned to user, and then only briefly.

HD is not original: it's a hybrid that was installed a year ago to replace a failed stock HD.

HD has sufficient free space.

Troubleshooting has included removing all USB devices except Apple stock keyboard and a Microsoft scroll mouse (in use since forever, not a new addition - she's given away the stock Apple mouse, so we can't easily rule out that device).

USB hub (old 4-port) was recently replaced with a new 10-port USB 3.0 hub, but the performance issues predate this hardware.

Internet connection is a 50-megabit Cable (Eastlink).

Disk Utility has checked the HD (while in Recovery mode): minor problems reported and fixed; subsequent runs report no problems. SMART status ok.

All software updated.

Malwarebytes run

Examination of /Application Support/, /Internet Plug-ins/ , /LaunchAgents/, Launch Daemons/, /PreferencePanes/, /Startup Items/ show nothing obvious.

System Preferences--> Users--> Login Items shows nothing suspicious

Activity Viewer also doesn't show anything obviously chewing up CPU cycles or RAM (well, apart from the usual OS X native processes).

Next Steps
- going to reconfirm free space on drive
- attempt to check if a second user account shows same symptoms
- attempt to see if computer still acts up when disconnected from internet

(the "attempt" bit is due to the user being ...challenging... when it comes to technology, and having them troubleshoot, e.g., when offline and unable to talk to me isn't likely to go well)

If all else fails, she'll either have to cart it off to an AASP or wait until I'm in town again mid-April...

Anyone have suggestions for items not covered above?

Frozen MacBookPro

Display Brightness Buttons stopped working on MacBook Pro

Display Brightness Buttons suddenly stopped working on one of the MacBook Pros.

The model is a late 2011 running OS 10.6.8
Display brightness control still works fine via the OS
Keyboard display brightness works fine using the keys so do all keys in the top row except the display brightness keys.

I tried a PRAM reset - that didn't help.
Anything else I can try to get the functionality of those display brightness keys back?

RAW processing apps

Just got a Sony Alpha 6000. The package includes a free download of Capture One Express, which sounds like a light version of Capital One Pro to which you're entitled to upgrade for a price. Familiar?

Any info on Capital One. Saw a brief mention of it in a previous post to the very interesting RAW vs JPEG thread.

Or is Photos now able to handle the task? Or is some other app like Aperture or Lightroom better?

iPad mini & webmail

Hi,
I have an iPad mini 2 iOS 9.2.1 and when in Telus web mail I am having the following problems.
When I am trying to delete an email it takes several taps of the delete box before the check mark shows up. Also, the keybored pops up unnecessaraly - -very annoying. It also takes several taps to open mailboxes such as trash, sent etc. It had worked fine last fall.
Using it in other than webmail it is very reponsive.
I have disabled "predict" in the keyboard settings. It did not work. Not sure what it does anyway.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Dictation on first gen. ipad air?

I am trying to activate dictation on my first gen ipad air and can't find where to do it in settings. Apparently there should be an "enable dictation" in General under Keyboard, but I don't have it. Can anyone tell me if the first gen. has the capability to take dictation? If so, how is it enabled and can it be used with the Kindle for Mac app? Thanks for any help or ideas.

OS 10.9.5 is driving me nuts - with autosave?

OS 10.9.5 is driving me nuts.

I find Apple has really lost its touch when it comes to a user friendly operating system.
I wonder if some of these idiosynchrasies are fixed in a later OS.

The latest one is that with some of the Apple applications, preview this time, the original pdf is automatically replaced with the one I modified even though I specifically used the "saved as" command and saved the changes with a different name.

To be perfectly clear:

Document ABC.pdf is on my Mac
I open it with preview, open thumbnails and delete a few pages in the pdf
Then go to "Save As" by holding down the option key.
Save the changed document as ABCmod.pdf
When I check back, the original ABC.pdf is also replaced by the modified ABCmod.pdf document and the original ABC.pdf document is gone.

So does one now have to remember to first make a duplicate of the original document so one does not lose it?
I really have to restrain myself - I have some really choice words for the developers at Apple.

movie cover not showing on iPad?

Tried this with a few videos I have added to my iPad. I labeled everything in iTunes, set it for sorting and all that and gave it artwork. The artwork never shows up on the iPad, seems only paid content will show artwork. Shows fine in iTunes. This is on the latest iOS update and latest OS X update.

Anyone else have this? Something I am doing wrong here?

More Adobe shenanigans... Any good alternative to Acrobat Pro?

I'm still fuming from my interactions with Adobe of the last 48 hours :mad:

Adobe has declared EOL on pretty much anything that is not CC and so it broke (or more accurately didn't fix) multiple problems in Acrobat Pro X due to the switch to El Cap. Apparently they fixed Acrobat 11, belatedly.

They are offering an upgrade route for a king's ransom: about C$400 (tax included) to get to DC Pro. This is where the fun begins: Having (very reluctantly) accepted to swallow this bitter pill, I paid for the upgrade, except that not all versions of Acrobat X are created equal! If you purchased it as part of CS5.5 (which I did), then it is not upgradable. Read this carefully again: a perfectly legal, registered copy of Acrobat Pro cannot be upgraded because it was part of a bundle! :ptptptptp

(oh and they want C$1000 for the full version)

SO...

I use Acrobat mainly to scan, combine files and reduce their size. Typically I will scan to TIFF and let Acrobat operate its magic. An important feature of size reduction while retaining good quality is OCR: the ClearScan fonts make a real difference. But that's not worth C$1k !!!

Any alternatives to the bloodsucking monopolists? PDFs created from scanners at typically very large and I find Preview pretty useless at size reduction/quality preservation (either from and image or from a PDF).

DSL provider??

My cousin is moving out to the country, St. Clemens/Heidelberg area in SW Ontario. They have been having trouble finding a provider for DSL, there is no cable access, there house is surrounded by farmers fields.

They have tried Teksavvy and VMedia with no luck, they will not service the area. I thought as long as you have a phone line you would be ok, seems I was wrong on that.

Bell is expensive and the speeds are 5mb... is that even fast enough to stream Netflix? That is the big use for them, streaming TV via netflix, shomi, etc to their apple tv.

Can anyone recommend me a DSL provider? I have googled and not got a lot of choices or come up with some webpages that look ancient.

Adobe CC bug deletes Mac data

Adobe pulls Creative Cloud update that deleted Apple Mac data

Adobe has replaced an Adobe Creative Cloud update which was deleting important Mac files without any permission from users.

The bug was spotted by Backblaze, an online data storage service which noticed that Adobe Creative Cloud was deleting users' files after being updated to version 3.5.0.206. The bug deletes information from hidden root folders.

"We've encountered an issue on the Mac where Adobe Creative Cloud (version 3.5.0.206) appears to be removing the contents of the first hidden folder at the root of the drive, in alphabetic order. By happenstance, the first hidden folder on most Backblaze customer's internal drive is the .bzvol folder," said a Backblaze blog on the bug.

The company also pointed out that it wasn't just Backblaze files which could be deleted, but potentially anything stored in a root directory. Backblaze has been disproportionately affected by the issue due to its name being near the very beginning of the alphabet, so at the top of Mac directories.

Users who didn't have Adobe Creative Cloud set to automatically update, or didn't immediately download version 3.5.0.206, weren't affected by the bug and Adobe removed the offending patch from being available to download.

Messed UP !

I was given a iPad retina display with a cracked screen. When I began to use it after the repair some of my apps were not working correctly. Tried the usual on off. Re-installed apps. No success. Almost as if the message from finger to move tile (scrabble) was not being connected.

I began a total restore and messed up when I was trying to put in passcode.

I am stuck. Is there anyway to get back to the beginning of a restore ?

This shouldn't be hard but I can't figure out how to get it on my computer. I downloaded it from the iTunes store into iTunes and it appeared that it would then load onto my iPod when I next connect it but I don't want it on my iPod, I want in on my laptop.

Apple mail not showing body of email

Hi

Apple mail just today started not showing the body of any emails. It will show some of them if I double click the message and open it up, but not all of them. There was a recent security upgrade for El Capitain so it may be related to that. Any suggestions as to how I can view my email messages again?

Apple Mail messages missing

I use Apple mail and recently I see it indicates there is new messages but, I cannot locate them. I search Trash etc., to no avail. Now I use Rogers as my carrier (not that I want to) and this didn't start until about two weeks ago. I have tried using the search box at the top of the page looking for "Unread messages" again nothing. After about two week the notification disappears. Any thoughts on what may be happening:confused:

The mysterious case of the undead iMac

Sometime in the last few months, my 5K iMac started misbehaving. Not in any of the ways you’d expect—crashes, lock-ups, weird error messages, that sort of thing. No, one day I came into my office in the morning and the iMac and all the peripherals were still on, the spinning gear animation still right where I had left it upon choosing Shut Down from the Apple menu the night before.

I fancy myself a pretty good Mac troubleshooter, but this was a bit baffling to me. The system has already gone into shutdown mode by the time it gets to this point; I can’t bring up a terminal window or run Activity Monitor to see what might be going on. Even stranger, when I manually powered off the iMac and restarted it, then tried to shut it down, it shut down properly. Okay. Maybe it was nothing. I started up and got about my business.

After a full day’s work, I shut down the iMac again—and once again, the spinning-gear animation appeared. I came back after dinner and it was still there. Okay, this was a problem. I reset my iMac’s power manager, zapped the PRAM, did all of the weird system-level things I could think of, and nothing solved the problem.

Major Honda Civic recall (Canada & USA)

Honda Recalls 45K Cars for Scary Reason

Honda is recalling about 45,000 newly redesigned Civic compact cars in the US and Canada because the engines can fail and stall while being driven.

The recall affects 2016 Civics equipped with 2-liter four-cylinder engines. Documents filed by Canadian safety regulators say that a circular clip around the pistons may be missing or was improperly installed at the factory. That can cause a pin on the piston to rub against the engine block and possibly cause engine failure or a fire.

It was unclear if any crashes, fires, or injuries had happened. Dealers will inspect the piston clips and fix them if necessary. In the US, dealers can't sell the affected cars until they are repaired. The recall covers about 34,000 Civics in the US and roughly 11,000 in Canada.

Does more megapixels really equal better image quality?

Hello ladies and gentlemen! As always, my name is Canada.

I'm on a tight budget, and I can't make a choice between the iPad mini 3 and the iPad mini 4; which have different cameras, 5 megapixels and 8 megapixels.

But what's the difference? Does 8 megapixel really offer better and crisper image quality? They are both 1080p cameras, so I think they should be about the same. However, I don't know if I'm right, so please tell me the difference between these two!

Edgar Mitchell, who 45 years ago became the sixth man to walk on the moon, died on Thursday (Feb. 4), the day before the anniversary of his lunar landing. He was 85.

The lunar module pilot on board NASA's Apollo 14 mission in 1971, Edgar Mitchell died peacefully in his sleep after a short illness at a hospice facility located near his home in West Palm Beach, Fla., his family confirmed.

"He was a hero in the classical sense," Karlyn Mitchell, the astronaut's oldest daughter, said in statement. "Though he fulfilled his childhood dreams while still a young man, he managed to sustain an aura of excitement by evolving and reinventing himself. He never tired of encouraging others to strive and explore."

For nine hours over the course of two moonwalks, Mitchell explored the Fra Mauro highlands with the commander of Apollo 14, Alan Shepard. Flying to and from the moon with Stuart Roosaon the command module Kitty Hawk, Mitchell and Shepard achieved the third U.S. moon landing on Feb. 5, 1971, but not before problems aboard the lunar module Antares almost caused an abort, twice.

Apple's iPhone trade-in program: damaged screens OK

Apple to Accept iPhone Trade-Ins With Damaged Screens

The Apple Store Reuse and Recycle trade-in program is now accepting damaged goods.

According to 9to5Mac, Cupertino will soon be more lenient when it comes to the quality of trade-in items. Starting this week, Apple Stores are giving credit for iPhone 5s and iPhone 6/6 Plus units with damaged displays, cameras, and buttons—within reason.

The new rules are meant to encourage iPhone upgrades, rather than a cheaper screen repair. In fact, it may be more cost-efficient to buy a new handset, if you can earn enough in-store credit and work out a financing plan, 9to5Mac suggested.

Current trade-in values include $50 for an iPhone 5s, $200 for an iPhone 6, and $250 for a 6 Plus, according to the site.

Also in the works is the option for professionally installed plastic screen protectors. Forget tugging and pushing your way to a perfectly smooth display. Using dedicated machines from Belkin, Apple Store employees will soon remove bubbles and clear dust particles, 9to5Mac said.

iPad password insanity

I recently inherited an iPad. In settings, I changed the App Store and iCloud logins to be my Apple ID. Yet, when I try to install an app from the App Store, it asks me to "Sign in to iTunes Store" using the old Apple ID.

Where is the iPad getting this old ID from?

Also, under ITunes and App Store settings, I have it set to not require a password for free downloads. Yet, it's still asking for my password.

I have restarted the iPad since making the Apple ID change.

What am I missing here?

Refurbished Airport Extreme

Hello All,

Has anyone seen the Gen 6 Airport Extreme on the refurbished page of Apple.ca? I'm wondering how much they cut the price. The cut on the Time Capsule is significant and tempting but I don't really need the Time Capsule. I'm wondering if I should wait for the Extreme to pop up on the refurb page or pull the trigger on the time capsule...

Your thoughts/observations?

Home button and Siri since 9.2.1

So yesterday I was able to confirm that the problem wasn't just with me.

I recently updated my iPad Mini 2 128gb to 9.2.1 using iTunes. Went thru smoothly, no problems, everything worked as expected, or so I thought.

Turns out, since the update, pressing the home button for ANY REASON will almost always bring up Siri. At first I thought it was my home button; maybe it's a little sticky, of maybe something seeped into the seam. Then I saw a co-worker having the same problem with HER iPad mini. Then my tenant. Then some stranger in the Food Court of a shopping mall. Weird.

It turns out that anything other than the quickest tap, 8 times out of 10 will bring up Siri, and as you can understand, this gets annoying REAL quick. Any suggestions on what I can tweak to eliminate or at least reduce this problem that DID NOT EXIST in 9.2?

Anyone have Rogers Account for IPAD

My IPAD is no longer holding a charge and I was planning on cancelling my IPAD 5GB data plan. I checked online and they have a tab in my account;
"5GB Data Plan $35.00 /month Remove"
Is this how you cancel the service completely or do you need to call in. Thanks for any info, appreciate any info.

so in heist i signed up with square, so I am not left with a gap in processing..

Apple Mail Junk filter advanced options

I am getting a lot of junk that is just getting through the junk mail filter in apple mail. I have tried setting up and advanced function so if the subject or content contains some words that it will get moved to junk. One example is I am getting this "Free Flight Simulator" junk mail a lot. I used these settings, but it does not seem to work. I tried sending an email from a gmail email account to my other account that has this filter. The message still goes through.

Am I doing something wrong here?
