Split Screen Users

Believe it or not, I just tried out the Split Screen function of El Capitan and find it quite interesting. Not sure how often I'll use it. Can anyone chime in as to how useful they find it? It takes a bit getting use to.

Old RAM (memory) modules

You know what would be nice?

A website where you type in (or select from a menu) the kind of ram modules you have left over after an upgrade, and identify what other machines in which they could be used.

I have a bunch of DDR3 1066 1gig modules... pretty much useless to me. I'd love to pop 'em into my office iMac (2009 model) but my 2 slots are already populated....

Homebrew ???

I want to save a short YouTube vido on my Mac so I can play it when I'm not connected to the net.

The applications I have to save YouTube videos don't seem to be able to download this video so I tried the Video Download helper that I have installed with Firefox.
That option supposedly allows me to download the video but it requires some software to combine audio and video and that software in turn depends on an application (or script, I'm not sure, called Homebrew.

Homebrew is installed via the terminal - and since I'm rather cautious when it cvomes to using terminal commands, I thought I'd ask here if anyone is using Homebrew with their Mac.
Anything to watch out for?
Any issues?

mac temperature app?

A co-worker has an old intel iMac, the white ones that came out just after the G5 iMacs. It is having issues, freezing and shutting down. She says it gets very hot and if after it crashes she lets it sit for a while she can use it longer the next time she boots up. Definitely sounds like it could be a heat issue. Any good free apps I can install to take a look?

If it is indeed a fan and overheating is a problem, is it worth it to replace/fix? Will the Apple store do this?

Lightning clock radios, etc (with both FM and AM)

just wondering if there are a bunch. I've seen one from sony, but that's about it). Most of the ones I've seen may have a Lightning connector, but FM only, no AM, and certainly no cd drive of any kind (not a deal-breaker, by any stretch, but it's nice to have that option, I suppose). I've seen a few "mini stereos" with a lightning connector,. but not too sure about whether or not they have a clock and alarm feature, something compact-ish might be nice
and not super duper expensive, either. I'm not exactly going to be plunking down $750 every day on something that'll sit by my bedside and keep me entertained. That's a little bit too much to ask of me, I think :eek:

Extending Network with Airport Express

Just received my Airport Express, connected to AC and fired up Airport Utility. I went with the default of Extending my present Airport Extreme. I entered the Base Station name for the Airport Express and password. When checking my available wireless networks, all I see is my Airport Extreme. So, how does the extension work? I thought I would connect to my new Airport Express, but is it one and the same? Shouldn't it be the same but a different name? Since an extended network is slower, how would I know I'm connected directly to my Airport Extreme for better speeds?

Canada's Wonderland - my experience.

Our first of the season visit..
wow it was busy, the lines were long at least an hour for the kid rides but I didn't mind, I was with my family and enjoyed being out.

but...
I actually almost had a throw down with a group of teens - who came into the restaurant shirtless and pants by their ankles, shoving their way around. [staff did nothing ]
They were offensive to everyone, - they were loud as well as obnoxious.
also began rough housing and elbowed my daughter in the eye.
I basically told them they were going to receive an education in respect and life, then told them to leave, for their own good.
Then I felt a tap on my shoulder and all 5 were fully dressed and apologized.
I guess I got through to them.

I did get cheers from others. Yup I am old and farting. ;)

other than that it was fun, great place for just walking around as most greenspace has become condos or infested dog turding areas.

Backing Up Apple Photos Library

Until recently, I could easily back up my photo library onto an external hard drive simply by dragging and dropping it. Then, I would say replace (or whatever it was). The whole thing would get copied. I'm using a Mac Mini (see specs below).

Recently, I have been getting a message that says that it already exists. Of course, the message only pops up after it's about 90% finished copying - which is a long time because I have nearly 200 GB of photos!!!

I can't figure out what is wrong. I have even deleted my back up from that hard drive. So, there isn't even a photo library by the same name in the partition.

Now, I can't back up my photos. Any suggestions?

I'm attaching some screen shots to help. Also, for more information, I don't put them into my Time Machine backup because it is too big for that partition and I used to keep the photos only on the external drive, but switched when I got a big enough hard drive on my Mini.

The 2nd photo shows my photo libraries, as I was considering creating a new library with a new name, but then wasn't sure if that would be a good solution or just complicate matters. However, I did discover that they library that says "system photo library" was the library on the external drive and when that library failed to copy, it no longer shows a "system photo library". Is this a clue???

Options to encrypt emails?

A small group of people I work with needs to send and receive most emails encrypted.

Right now we use Hushmail but that is getting ridiculously expensive - $US 151.- per month on the last financial report.

So Iwas looking for alternatives....

Is anyone using that and if so what is the opinion?
People who need to communicate via encrypted emails are not very computer savvy so the user interface has to be dead simple.

I also read somewhere that the later versions of Apple Mail include the option of encryption - OS 10.10 and up.
I think everyone in the group is using Macs, so that may also be an option.

Comments - any other good and free (or inexpenstive) options?

viewing locations in Apple Photo???

in iPhone you used to be able to look at a map and it would show all the pin drops where photos were taken. It was cool and actually handy if you wanted to find a certain picture, rather then look through the massive library, if you knew were it was taken you could go to it with the map super quick. Was trying to find some pictures I took about 4 years ago, I opened Apple Photos and was expecting to find something similar to iPhoto when it comes to photo locations. No such luck.

Is this feature gone now in Apple Photos? Or cleverly hidden away for some reason?

I’m selling 1 of my best employees!

From a non-smoking pet free home plus I dusted it every few months so it’s spiffy inside.

A few minor scratches on the case, but nothing of the eye sore variety.

Additions:

- replaced the original hard drive with a fast 240 GB SSD. Boot up time and working speeds are very efficient.

- has 2 additional hard drives of 500 GB each in bays 2 & 3. 4 is empty.

- dual DVD burners (I added a 2nd a few years back)

Subtractions:

I am missing 1 of the back pci-e card slot covers. This won’t stop the machine from working of course. I had 2 eSata dual expansion cards in there and must have misplaced where I put the original slot cover. I would keep your contact info and let you know when I find it.

Also, the original discs must be with that sneaky slot cover as I can’t currently find those either. I’ve owned 8 Macs and have never misplaced original discs. BUT, thanks to RGray, I created a bootable USB stick with Yosemite on it so you’re good to go. I’ll include it of course.

I did a rewipe of the OS so the machine has a fresh start of Yosemite 10.10.5

The machine itself works spectacularly. The only reason I’m selling is because I’m working more for my wife's business than I did before so I don’t need 2 Mac Pros.

I’d like to see this one being used more than it is. It hasn’t given me any issues.

SS USB drive is locked

Hi all

I have a USB key (thumb drive) that I have used for quite a while and suddenly it is on read only and not read/write. I cannot add or erase any file to it or from it.

Thumb drives are cheap enough that I can replace it, but the point is: how did this happened and how can I prevent a similar event from happening?

Anybody can guide me to make it back to read/write?

Late 2011 13" MBP i7 500gb Drive failing, need some advice

Hi everyone,

I am a PC person but I've been an iPhone and iPad owner for the last 6 years. A good friend of mine has a MPB that I'm trying to help her with, trying to help her keep the cost down, and I'm pretty confident in my abilities to do at least the replacement of the drive on my own, and swap the RAM at a later point.

But right now I know one thing, the HD is failing, quickly. I've been trying desperately to do any kind of backup, but it's just stalling like crazy, and I'm at my wit's end attempting to figure it out.

I phoned Simply and talked with them about options, and I was getting quotes of around $250+ to do ANYTHING at all, and that's with a 256gb SSD.

So my goal is to self resolve this badboy, but I want to know the best options of hardware to buy and also some way of getting that hard drive data safe and secure, she has a ton of photos of her kids on there that she certainly does not want lost.

I have the screwdriver tools to open the case, and it looks like I'll need a spudger - but that's all from a tool perspective I'll need.

From a hardware standpoint, I would REALLY like to replace the drive with an SSD or a hybrid, but I don't know where my best route to take would be.

I found a replacement SATA drive for $70 after shipping on amazon, but I'm pretty sure that's going to be a speed bottleneck.

Are there alternatives for a 500gb SSD? I don't know if there's space in between the 256 and 500, I know there used to be for SATA drives, but I've been out of it for a bit.

Are there any reasonably priced options available in Canada?

And the next, and bigger question, what would be the best solution to clone the drive? Would I need to buy an enclosure for the drive and work with that? If that's the only solution then I don't mind spending a few beans on a relatively inexpensive enclosure to clone it, but I'm also concerned with the HD failing if that's also going to fail. I've tried just copying her photos folder multiple times but it's been failing out on me a ton.

I'm sure there are other things that I need to know before I head down this path, but I just don't know them currently.

Small Safari Window on opening?

Does anyone know how to enable Safari so that it opens with a full screen? I am running 10.11.3 and I always get the small window in the bottom left hand corner. I have looked at various forums and it seems that it is a common problem.

how to disable iCloud on iPad?

I am really tired of the iCloud msg asking me to log into my iTunes account when I never even use it. It is also associated with my old email addy, which changed when I moved. I have entered the password for it but it says it's wrong. Really it's the email addy that's wrong, and I can't seem to change it.

I'd like to know how to disable iCloud on my iPad and if that can't be done how do I change my email addy? I've looked all over for this!

I also have a Mac Mini that is my primary computer and I deleted the old email addy there which did stop iCloud from asking me to log into iTunes, but it persists on my iPad. I hoped by eliminating the old email addy on the Mini it'd send that info to the iPad but it doesnt seem to work that way.

Bought a Used Mac Pro Tower

I got a used Mac Pro and the guy dropped it off with Yosemite loaded and an admin account with all this extra software that I don't want. I want to wipe and reinstall the OS so it has Yosemite on there and start fresh as a brand new OS with no old junk from my other computers on there as well.

It's a 2010 model. So it I can wipe in Disk Utility and it'll automatically boot up with Yosemite, right? Thanks in advance!

the rest of the message read " Domain error 1032" Well I did a search on the net first and got no where. Finally contacted Rogers, let them control my computer and 20 minutes later Mail program up and working great. Now the tech who did this told me that Apple had upgraded their system in such a way that this was the cause of the error. Not being a tech/nerd I have no idea so I just posted this as a heads up to others:D

Lesson Learned

Generally I try to avoid anything but cotton clothing, just because cotton is more comfortable than synthetics or synthetic blends.

So couple of days ago I picked up some t-shirts at a nearby Bargain Store. Two were all cotton and the formaldehyde stench was easily removed with a simple wash. The third turned out to be 50% polyester. It smells every bit as bad after the wash as it did going in. Fair bit of online research suggests the only hope is a long, multi-day, soak in a baking soda solution, then solar/wind dry, preferably at sub zero temps, finally repeat until wearable!

Will go one round and if that does not save it, I'll let it stink up the local landfill.:eek:

Songs of Canada.

Hello all,

I am currently working on an ESL module about Canada using songs from each/or about each province.

I am looking for some advice on choice. I would like a mix of serious and fun. I know we have the Canadianised version This Land Is Your Land and the Canadian Railroad Trilogy.

I am looking for suggestions similar to Farewell To Nova Scotia, I's The Boy, Four Strong Winds, Une Canadienne and such. So I need to fill in the provinces, any suggestions would be appreciated, thanx

Advantages:

Quality, sturdy construction. Unlike the lightweight, plastic boxes of later Apple TVs, this 1st generation model has good size, weight and a rubber pad bottom so it stays firmly in place when connected to cables. Newer Apple TVs are so dainty they get pulled around by their own wires.

Component video and analog stereo outputs allow it to be connected to older CRT TVs.

Disadvantages:

Software no longer being updated by Apple. Software is available from other parties, however, if that is important to you.

Bad mac

I recently acquired a nice MacBook Pro. It's a 2009 15" 3.06 processor.
The problem is:
Wont' boot at startup
There is no chime
Screen remains black
black sleep light
Fans come on slow then speed up
Tried:
smc reset etc.
removed battery and started computer, same result
changed ram
Removed logic board and found only dust, no signs of liquid damage
Any other ideas

Best and safest way to clean a MacBook Pro track pad???

What is the best and safest way to clean a MacBook Pro track pad /

I keep coming across conflicting information on line, some say don't use any liquid at all, others claim isopropyl alcohol is fine, I also see glass cleaner being recommended, or a bit of water.

I think to get all the residue off the trackpad one has to use more than just a dry towel, but what is actually safe to use?

Setting up IMac after internal SSD install

Somewhat as an experiment and hoping to speed it up, I installed a 250 gb SSD in the optical bay on the following:
21.5-inch, Mid 2011 iMac, 2.5 GHz Intel Core i5 running Yosemite.
I kept the original 500GB HDD and have Yosemite also installed on the SSD.

I can boot using the SSD but can't access what's on the original drive.
There are a lot of posts on installing an SSD alone, externally, or just the install part, and many are 3-4 years old and seem rather complex.
Any simple way to get the SSD as boot drive and 500gb as storage..?
I've seen it for Windows but not for an iMac..
