MacBook Pro display brightness buttons don't work

I have a late 2011 13-inch MacBook Pro running OS 10.6.8

The two keyboard display brightness buttons (F1 & F2) no longer work.

Display brightness control in system preferences works fine.

Any ideas what I could try/check to see if I can get them to work again?
For some reason netflix movies are always dim - I need to turn the brightness way up to get a good picture, but that brightness setting is much too high for regular computer work.

Having to go into preferences each time to adjust the brightness is a pain.

I tried a bunch of suggestions I found on the net but nothing made any difference.
Volume up/down/mute buttons work fine.
Is there any way to check if the display keyboard buttons themselves work?

iPhone 5S And iOS 9.3.3

I have a friend who just upgraded his iPhone 4 to a 5S at the Telus store. The guy at Telus advised him not to upgrade the current software to 9.3.3 as it would slow his new phone down. Not sure what OS he is currently running, but has anyone had issues with the new software upgrade on a 5S?

I see a petiton to Apple on Facebook (pfffft) claiming Apple is deliberately slowing down phones and tablets. I don't believe that crap, but if anyone knows more than I do, please chime in so I can advise him what to do.

If it was me, I would just install the new system like I did on my wife's iPhone 5 which works as normal running 9.3.3. I suspect a 5S would do the same.

iCloud help me ... please !!!

Not really my first post , haven't been on so long forgot password and old Email so new account.

Anyways I just bought new 12" Macbook to complement older Macbook Pro and Mac mini. I take a lot of photos and plan to bring new unit to Asia next year to backup pictures. I recently signed up for 200GB of iCloud storage and was hoping to upload all my current iPhoto library into the cloud and expect I could access from the new Macbook without actually storing the photos on the new Macbook. Now I find I have 16BG of photos showing up on the new Macbook.

I have tried searching for the correct fix but I can't find the correct process. Please how to I just have access to cloud photos on new Macbook but I don't want to store them !!!

Thanks,

Pat.

Problem configuring Roaming Wifi network

I’ve just purchased an Airport Extreme and I intend to use it as my router & combine it with our existing one year old Time Capsule to create a roaming Wifi network.

The new Airport Extreme (refurbished) is located in my studio/office - directly connected to our wireless broadband internet (WAN port)

Our small ethernet is connected to my iMac [mid 2010 running OSX 10.11.5] & a PC and extends to 2 other areas through an ethernet switch.

This setup runs just fine, our internet speed has improved slightly - bit better than our old T-Link router. Wifi accessible in whole house - better on one side.

The Time Capsule (2TB) is connected via ethernet on the far side of the house, provides Time Machine back-up and solid Wifi to that area.
This Time Capsule arrangement was an existing setup that ran perfectly with the T-Link before I bought the Airport Extreme.

I’ve used the Airport Utility to set everything up, and it appears to work.

The Problem Is:

With both the Time Capsule & the Extreme connected & active, the internet connection gradually slows down and grinds to a halt. - The Wifi seems to follow suit but is much more gradual.

If I turn off the Time Capsule, the internet connection is back to normal, the Wifi signal from the Airport Extreme is strong and extends to almost all areas.

I initially had problems configuring to two units, so I reset both to factory default and from that point managed to get everything working - except that the internet connection slows down. Each time I visit a different web-site, it takes longer to load/link up.

I spoke with our ISP, the link to our tower is solid. The tech suggested that I set the Wifi on each unit to use a different channel (2 frequencies & several channels each available).

So far this has not solved the problem, I will continue making adjustments.

I’ve Googled this - most answers are not up to date - usually 2012, 13, 14. and not directly related to my situation. But I will continue my search.

I would appreciate it If anyone here has any suggestions

B.C. "Terrorists" entrapped: Court

Nuttall and Korody to be freed after B.C. judge issues stay of proceeding in terror entrapment case

John Nuttall and Amanda Korody will be set free after a B.C. Supreme Court judge entered a stay of proceedings in their terror plot entrapment case, overturning their convictions.

The common-law couple was found guilty by a jury of conspiring to murder persons unknown and making or possessing an explosive substance for planting pressure cooker bombs outside the B.C. Legislature in 2013. Both were facing a sentence of life in prison.

But their defence team argued before the Supreme Court that the couple had been entrapped by the RCMP and were not capable of carrying out a terrorist plot on their own.

In her ruling, Justice Catherine Bruce said police went too far and used trickery and subterfuge to manipulate the pair. She also said the two did not have the mental capacity to have planned and carried out the plot themselves.

Bruce described Nuttall and Korody as "frightened" and "marginalized," and said the RCMP used that to their advantage, aiding and abetting the pair, and going to "enormous effort" to get them to carry out the plan, including providing inducements like an elaborate escape plan and offers of jobs.

So, The Telcos DO Have The Technology To Block Robocalls

Then the question becomes, why won't they use it and get rid of scammers calling your home or cell?
Quote:

FCC To Phone Companies: Offer Free Robocall Blockers To Customers

Even though the Federal Communications Commission has repeatedly said that wireless and landline phone providers are allowed to offer robocall-blocking services to their customers, some carriers have continued to incorrectly insist — and provide misinformation to consumers — that they simply don’t have the authority to deploy this technology. In an effort to make things clear once and for all, FCC Chair Tom Wheeler has sent letters to these companies that there are no regulatory roadblocks stopping them from helping their customers stop annoying — often illegal — automated and prerecorded robocalls.

“Nothing in the Commission’s rules and orders prevents [phone companies] from offering customers robocall blocking technology,” writes Wheeler in letters to the chief executives at AT&T, CenturyLink, Frontier, Sprint, T-Mobile, U.S. Cellular, and Verizon. “I strongly urge you to offer your customers robust call blocking at no cost.”

Between the Do Not Call List and rules prohibiting private robocallers from sending prerecorded messages or texts without having received prior consent, robocalling as a legitimate-but-annoying telemarketing tool has virtually disappeared. Yet complaints about robocalls continue to grow in number, indicating that most of these calls are being placed illegally, often by scammers.

In spite of this, many in the telecom industry have been reluctant to deploy robocall blockers, citing technological issues and raising concerns that all existing blockers could inadvertently block legitimate calls from going through.

“We understand that providers do not want to block calls without their customers’ permission,” writes Wheeler in his letters to the telecom CEOs. “We agree and said as much last summer — consumers should only opt into any blocking/filtering solution after the provider has given them an understanding of the solution’s capabilities.”

Wheeler also takes issue with the telecom industry’s stance that blockers should be put on hold until new Caller ID authentication standards are in place, saying that “is not a valid excuse to delay” deployment.

The 2016 Olympics - Shouid They Even Be Held?

The more I read about the Rio Olympics, the more I ask myself, why are they even being held?

Should athletes be subjected to such filth?

Or is it all about the money?

Quote:

Olympians Will ‘Literally Be Swimming In Human Crap,’ Scientists Say

Olympians headed to Rio de Janeiro have already been told to be cautious of the virus Zika.

But Olympic swimmers, sailors and windsurfers will have to look out for more than that, because the city’s waters have what health experts are calling a “petri dish of pathogens,” including bacterias that cause diarrhea, vomiting and even death to those with weakened immune systems.

“Foreign athletes will literally be swimming in human crap, and they risk getting sick from all those microorganisms,” Dr. Daniel Becker, a local pediatrician who works in poor neighborhoods, told the New York Times. “It’s sad but also worrisome.”

Feces from a nearby sewage plant reportedly pours into the water untreated and human and animal dead bodies are found in the water with “upsetting regularity,” according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

latest Yosemite update

I ran the latest Yosemite update (2016-004) 3 days ago and now both Firefox and Safari are acting differently. If I for example have mail open on the desktop and then I open either Firefox or Safari, mail disappears from the screen. I have to reopen mail either from the dock or mission control. If I have mail open on the desktop and I open another app other than F or S, mail stays on the desktop. I must admit both F and S open faster.

I also updated El Capitan on my mbp and it is not closing apps when Firefox or Safari is opened.
Anybody else experiencing this?

Sticky click bar on Macbook Pro 15 track pad

In trying to fish out a hard crumb stuck in the narrow gap between the click bar and the frame on the track pad, I've managed to shove part of it firmly under the bar. It's making the click unreliable. Does anyone know how I can remove the bar and get the dirt out? I've removed keys before by slavishly following a video on how to do that, but I can't find one on removing the click bar. Is there one?

Thanks in advance for your help!

I have removed my old computers through the iTunes menu, but that does not remove the IOS devices.

Apple Patents Technology To Block Your Phone Camera

Quote:

Apple really doesn't want you to record videos where it's forbidden.

The company is working on a technology that can disable phones' photo and video recording capabilities using an infrared signal, a newly approved patent filing has shown.
The technology could stop people from making illegal recordings at concert venues, in cinemas or theaters.

The patent described how an infrared signal could be fired in places where video recording is prohibited. The phone would detect the signal and either alter what's shown on the screen or shut down its video features completely.

The patent approval was first reported by Patently Apple.

New Mac Set Up - help to transfer data

I picked up a 2012 mini with 1 tb HDD and 128 SSD. The OS is loaded on the SSD for quick boot up. I have a Time Machine backup of my old Mac but when I use Migration Assistant to move the data over it tells me I don't have enough space. I'm guessing that it's trying to put everything on the SSD. Is there a way to get my data from the Time Machine back up onto the 1tb storage drive in the mini instead of the SSD?

List of Issues updating to MacOS 10.11.x (El Capitan)

I just updated the first Mac in our family to El Capitan and thought it would be useful to create a list of the update issues I (and others) encountered.
That would make it easier to troubleshoot and correct any problems that occurred during the upgarde.
I would encourage anyone who has run into upgrade issues going to El Capitan to post them here.
I'll start with one of my own:

1. Problem is getting to websites in general. Browser has difficulty resolving the URL.
Turns out that when upgrading from 10.9 to 10.11 (which was the upgrade on this specific Mac), the DNS server addresses were not transferred.
Only a single DNS server showed up in Network preferences and it was the ISP DNS server as far as I can tell.
I used to have two ISP DNS servers and the two google DNS servers in Network preferences.
Adding the google servers 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 solved that issue.
As a side note - I'm not crazy about using google for anything because of their tracking.
Anyone have experience with other DNS servers, like the ones from "Level 3"?

209.244.0.3
209.244.0.4
4.2.2.1
4.2.2.2
4.2.2.3
4.2.2.4

2. Second issue will go here. Updated yesterday and so far I have not come across another issue

iOS 9.3.3 Update

What amazes me is that the upgrade also included my old original iPad 2 all these years later and it still works just fine.

I suspect once iOS 10 comes out, the old iPad 2 will be dropped, but what a run.

Munich terror attack

Munich shooting: Gunman targeted children outside McDonald's restaurant in shopping centre rampage - as footage emerges of suspect cursing foreigners on fifth anniversary of Anders Breivik attack
Munich police gave a "cautious all clear" early on Saturday morning, more than seven hours after a gunman opened fire in a crowded shopping mall and at a nearby McDonald's killing nine people and wounding at least 10 others in a rampage authorities called an act of terrorism.

A body found near the scene was that of the shooter and he appeared to have acted alone, officials said.

* * *

While police called the mall shooting an act of terrorism, they said they had "no indication" it involved Islamic extremism and at least one witness said he heard a shooter shout an anti-foreigner slur.

iPad Air and iPad mini 2 for sale

I have two iPads for sale.

1. iPad Air 128gb wifi+LTE running JAILBROKEN iOS 8.4. Lighting port is wonky and needs to be repaired and should cost anywhere from $100 - $150 (Quotes from iRepair, BUYnCELL and Gamerama). Unit comes with Apple smart case, charger, and cable. I can wipe and restore the device , but I'm guessing a jailbroken device has more value to the right buyer. Asking $350

2. iPad mini 2 128GB wifi+LTE. Running the latest iOS (9.3.2), this device is in great condition, EXCEPT the GPS chip doesn't work, but data still does. Comes with gel case, charger and cable. Asking $400

OR grab both for $700

Pictures to follow soon.

resume scam???

So we get these emails with resumes from Phd students every now and then, out of the blue, no advertising on our part as we are not hiring. They say this
"I am confident XXX Company is the ideal choice for me to develop my career".

We are a commercial print shop and the person applying is "Bachelor of Engineering (Honours), and a Masters of Applied Science in Nuclear Engineering".
I don't know, but seems like they are completely different worlds. I do a preview of their resume, not wanting to actually open the attached word file. Lots of info, Ontario address and such. I never respond, but am curious. Is this some sort of scam? I have trouble believing someone with all these awards in their field and a list of impressive sounding projects that I cannot even decipher is applying at a print shop.

Am I wrong, is this legit and people are just that desperate for a job even outside of their field? Or is it some scam and if so, what are they after and how?

Truck plows into Bastille Day crowd in Nice, France, more than 70 believed dead

Dozens of people were killed in the French Riviera city of Nice late on Thursday when a truck plowed into crowds watching a fireworks display on France's Bastille Day national holiday.

French TV channel BFM TV initially reported at least 30 people were killed as a crowd was celebrating.

The president of the Nice region, Christian Estrosi, said at least 60 are dead, though other reports later suggested the figure is as high as 73. Estrosi also said the truck was loaded with arms and grenades.

hard drive replacement cost?

My cousin has a 24" iMac, I am pretty sure the hard drive is dead, they have the flashing question mark on boot up. I went to the Apple store on Saturday to inquire about replacing the hard drive, to see how much it would cost. Have to say they were less then helpful, they will not give a price without a serial number because they don't know what parts they will need... a hard drive!

Anyways, trying to get the serial number but wanted to know if anyone has done this before if they had a rough idea of the price? Would I be able to supply my own hard drive rather then buying from Apple which I am sure will be quite inflated.

Bitdefender alert: EasyDocConverter/ Backdoor.Mac.Eleanor

via ehMac.ca http://ift.tt/29jccVs

Beware: Tor backdoor targeting Macs

New Tor-powered backdoor malware targets Macs | PCWorld
Security researchers have found a new backdoor program that allows attackers to hijack Mac systems and control them over the Tor network.

The new malware has been dubbed Backdoor.MAC.Eleanor by researchers from antivirus vendor Bitdefender and is distributed as a file converter application through reputable websites that offer Mac software.

The rogue application is called EasyDoc Converter. Once installed it displays a fake interface where users can supposedly drag and drop files for conversion, but which in reality doesn’t do anything.

In the background, the application executes a shell script that installs multiple malicious components in a folder called “/Users/$USER/Library/.dropbox.” The Dropbox name is used to make the malware harder to spot and has nothing to do with the legitimate Dropbox file synchronization software.

The Eleanor malware has three components: a Web service with a PHP application, a Tor hidden service that allows attackers to connect to the affected systems over the Tor anonymity network and an agent that posts the Tor access URLs for infected systems to the Pastebin website.

The PHP application served by the Web service is actually a backdoor that allows attackers to view, edit, rename, delete, upload, download and archive files on the system; to execute shell commands and scripts written in PHP, Perl, Python, Ruby, Java and C; to open a reverse shell to the attackers’ server; to connect to MySQL, SQLite and other databases; to view the process list and to send emails with attachments. Another component of this application allows attackers to capture images and videos using the system’s webcam.

* * *

The good news is that the app is not digitally signed by an Apple-approved certificate, so users will see security warnings on the latest OS X version if they try to install it. On OS X El Capitan (10.11) users would actually need to perform a manual override in order to install the application.

Is Apple Care transferable on Apple display when purchased with MacBook Pro?

I am looking at buying a used 27" Apple Display. The original purchaser bought Apple care for both the display and his MacBook Pro. If I buy only the monitor is the Apple care transferable?

Any knowledge is appreciated.

10 years - a slap on the wrist....

‘Many died because of this piece of plastic’: Corrupt security wand deal left Iraq vulnerable to Baghdad bomb

After at least 187 people were killed in a devastating Islamic State bomb attack in the Iraqi capital, Iraqis turned their anger toward a symbol of government corruption and the state’s failure to protect them: fake bomb detectors.

The wand-like devices, little more than an aerial attached to a plastic handle, are still widely in use at security checkpoints around the country even years after the British con man who sold them was arrested for fraud and the U.K. banned their export.

They are used at the entrances to embassies, compounds and government ministries. They are used by security forces at checkpoints such as those on the shopping street at Karrada that was hit in the suicide bombing in the early hours of Sunday morning, and has been targeted numerous times in the past.

* * *

Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi announced Sunday night that all the country’s security forces should remove the handheld devices from checkpoints and that the Ministry of Interior should reopen its investigation into the corrupt deals for the devices.

But they were still in use in Baghdad the following morning, and it’s unclear when the move will be implemented.

* * *

“We haven’t received an order yet,” said Muqdad al-Timimi, a police officer at a checkpoint in northern Baghdad who was still using one of the devices. “We know it doesn’t work, everybody knows it doesn’t work and the man who made it is in prison now. But I don’t have any other choice.”

The device, known as the ADE 651, was sold to Iraq by Jim McCormick, a British man who was sentenced to 10 years in prison by a U.K. court in 2014 for fraud. He had been arrested in 2010 when export of the device was banned by the British government.

McCormick is thought to have made more than $80 million selling the devices in countries including Iraq. McCormick’s company had claimed that the devices could detect contraband such as drugs and explosives from as far as a kilometer away. The manual for the device had said that with the right “substance detection cards” the devices could even detect elephants or $100 bills.

A BBC investigation in 2010 concluded that it was impossible that the device could detect anything at all. It described it as a “glorified dousing rod.”

They are all simply rebranded versions of “Gopher: The Amazing Golf Ball Finder!,” which wasn’t even capable of that. The aerial simply swings in response to any small movement by the hand of the operator. The Gopher sold for $69, but McCormick sold the devices to Iraq for thousands of dollars each, according to news reports.

Convicted and sentenced for fraud. Couldn't an enterprising prosecuting attorney make a decent case for accessory to murder?

For Sale MacPro 5,1. 12 core upgrade, 3.33ghz, 64gigs ram

2010 with upgraded with dual x5680 xeons. 12 cores of 3.33 punch.

64 gigs ram in 4 chips - upgradeable to 128 with more of the same style 16-gig sticks.

I'll keep my SSD's so it comes with no drives or special caddies.

had an external e-sata card installed (sata 3 - faster)

I have 2 video cards; one is a pc card (no apple symbol on boot) but was pretty quick at cuda stuff. GTX570. It also has the extra power-pigtail cables, and extras that can plug into SATA ports for 75w power.

I think the other is a slo-mo GT120. Will check if there's interest in the box.

I have no idea if the optical drive works. :D

There are scratches here and there, it's a workstation, not a garage queen :P

$2400 obo.

Portable headphone amp w DAC for MBP Retina (2015)?

I just bought some Focal Spirit Classic headphones and am not sure if my MBP is already equipped with a something that I won't need a portable headphone amp such as the Audioquest Dragonfly.

If it doesn't, would the Red or Black Dragonfly be recommended or something else?

Wifi phone service?

Please help me with a reliable wifi phone service. I'm paying $95/month for 10gb of data and unlimited minutes on my iPhone 6+.

I thought I needed all that, but I'm finding that I rarely use data because I stick close to home and I have wifi here. I have an old iPhone 4s that I could put a pay as you go SIM card in to carry in case of emergencies. I rarely make/receive calls since all my friends live in this same building.

I used Skype to call home when I travelled to Asia and found it excellent, but I can't find where I can get a Canadian phone number.

Any ideas?
