Apple TV and Cable shows

Been wanting to cut the cord to Cable TV as we're paying $70 plus a month for not much. I know there have been "skinny" packages offered with the new CRTC standards, but our Cable provider ends up charging more for the little we want. I as thinking of going with the Apple TV 4th Generation and seeing what kind of apps we can get to provide the Cable shows that we really want without the high monthly fee. HGTV is one of the networks my wife wants. I like a number of news networks. We're not into sports. Public TV as well (out of Detroit?). Is Apple TV able to pull through on these, or are we forever stuck with a cable provider?

Selling a great MacBook Pro 15": Install Mac OS Sierra?

I'm going to be selling a fantastic MacBook Pro 15" (2.6Ghz Quad Intel Core i7, 500GB SSD, 16GB RAM, new top and bottom case, AppleCare, etc.), and wondering: would a buyer want Mac OSX 11 El Capitan, or should I install Mac OS Sierra?

Tech Support Scam - How to protect the elderly???

So I got a call from my grandad and found out he had just been on the phone for an hour with "Apple" as a result of getting "Locked Out" of his computer. They tried to extort $700-$800 for an annual support plan or something but sounds like he didn't go for it.

My first instinct was to get the computer OFF because who knows what sort of remote access they could have going on. There was an app called LogMeIn Rescue that was preventing shut down so I guided him to force quit that and then shut down the computer until it could be taken to the Apple Store (or myself). I tried to get the number he called but he couldn't find it.

It's difficult to deal with this over the phone because he doesn't remember the last 30 seconds very well let alone the last hour. I have no idea what they were doing during this hour long phone call. Was it all just discussing support plans and payment options with the goal of extorting $700 or were they digging around in his computer or convincing him to reveal passwords, etc? He's already called his bank to get his accounts frozen.

How do we protect our elderly from these threats???

Restoring iTunes Library to iPod

I have an 80G iPod (about 5 yrs old) that went kaput after I installed Sierra today on my iMac. I reset the iPod through iTunes, set it to manual after reset, then checked entire music library. A while later I got this: "Attempting to copy to disk Khufu's iPod failed. An unknown error occurred (-1401)." On the iPod is about a third of the 13000 title library. Anybody know what gives? Thanks for any advice.

run iMovie 09 from external HD? (program not project)

Hi,

I'm about to get a new SSD HD in my 2010 MBP which should make it a bit more spiffy! And, I think it's time to upgrade from Snow Leopard. I have been using iMovie 09 which is working fine and is better than more recent versions (though maybe they put back some of the great features?)........anyway, if I want to keep using iMovie '09 AND update to a much more recent OS which won't run that version according to my research, can I run the program from an external HD? So what I'm thinking is I put the current HD that's coming out into an external case and then make it be a slave to the laptop with it's new HD. Does this all make sense? I did this with plugging my G4 into my G5 to run Photoshop a few years ago.

Thoughts?

Thanks.

Disable tabs in macOS Sierra - possible?

Apologies for posting another problem so soon :)

MacOS Sierra seems to default to opening everything in new tabs, even when I click Command-N to open a new window. I like to be able to choose between opening a new tab or a new window.

I looked through System Preferences and am unable to locate where I can disable this behaviour. Can anyone help please?

It is possible not might be in Finder preferences, but then would that change the setting only in Finder and not system-wide?

Thanks and cheers

Speedtest beta (without Flash) no longer working?

Since I don't have Flash installed I have been using Speedtest's beta site (beta.speedtest.net) that works without Flash.

After updating to Sierra, the site no longer works. It automatically redirects to the non-beta site and tells me I don't have Flash installed and that it needs Flash to work. This is in Safari.

If I used Firefox, it loads the beta site properly, but I am unable to click on "Begin Test" - meaning, nothing happens when I click - no visual of the "button" being pressed at all.

I thought I'd be clever and change the Safari user agent to "iPad". Well, that backfired. It went to the site and showed a page asking me to download the iOS version of the app onto my device!

Can someone else try this out for me and let me know if I am the only one facing this issue please?

Thanks and cheers

For Sale Macbook Pro "Pismo" 500 G3 w MacOS X Tiger 10.4

I'm reaching out to the ehMac community to find a good home for my fully functioning Powerbook "Pismo" laptop - this is circa 2000 and it has a few upgrades*:

machine model: Powerbook 3,1
model #: M7633LL/A

500 Mhz G3 processor
*1GB RAM (maxed out)
*Hitachi GST Travelstar 7K60 HTS726060M9AT00 (08K0939) 60GB 7200 RPM 8MB Cache IDE Hard drive
*Airport Card installed
*Mac OS 10.4.11 Tiger preinstalled (note no OS 9 is installed)
*ejectable battery has been replaced with Newer Tech battery a few years ago (original batteries were recycled)
original DVD/CD play still works and is on the right bay

See photos for following normal wear for a 16 year (!!) computer that is in otherwise amazing condition:
- hardly any aesthetic scuffs or scratches on outside case including ALL rubber case coverings are intact with NO peeling or separating.
- few keys show bit of wear on the letters, namely S, D, C and N
- one small chip on upper left side of screen that is hardly noticable on most background and when noticed looks like a dark pixel
- onboard PRAM battery is charged, but if you leave the laptop unplugged for a week and it drains, you may need to do the 'disconnect PRAM battery' to startup (easy to do) and let sit to fully charge, as long as the Newer Tech side battery is charged though there is no issue.

EXTRAS available upon request -
- if you need OS 9.2, I can include the original Jaguar with OS X.2 and OS 9.2 disks
- I have a D-Link 2.4Ghz Bluetooth USB adapter in original, unopened box which can also include (note haven't tested as its still in shrink wrapped box)

PRICE - I honestly don't know what its worth now - Make me an offer! PM me or I'll watch the comments below.

Can meet in Toronto along the subway line between Runnymede and York Mills OR pick up evenings and weekends in Etobicoke (Lawrence and Scarlett Rd)

Mini DV and Daisy chaining Firewire

Yes this takes us back a few years...

I have a collection of Mini DV tapes and want to save them as Quicktime and back them up to HD. In the old days, I just plugged my digicam to my firewire port on a computer and iMovie did the rest.

So I bought a second hand digicam, attempted this and everything crashed. Quite badly.

The problem may come from daisy chaining. My setup is such that I now have the OS running on an external SSD through Firewire 800. Normally, I daisy chain another HD which I use for Lightroom; no problem. However, when I substituted the HD with the camera, neither iMovie nor the OS liked it! I had to reboot AND remove the camera: wouldn't boot with the camera still attached.

I vaguely remember stories amount digital capture and daisy chaining but I thought it had to do with the occasional dropped frame. Am I missing something?

PS: only one FireWire port so I'm a bit stuck...

1-terabyte (yep) SDXC card revealed

Anyone else remember cutting a notch in the opposite side of the old 5 1/4" floppies to double the storage space (to an amazing 130kb or something)?

How far we've come....

SanDisk Just Revealed a Monstrous 1 Terabyte SD Memory Card

There’s no word on when you’ll be able to buy it, or to what extent you’ll need to mortgage your home to afford one, but today SanDisk revealed a prototype of a one-terabyte SDXC card that will help ensure your camera never runs out of space for photos or videos

Western Digital, SanDisk’s parent company, dropped the one terabyte bomb at the Photokina 2016 photography show today, and it comes just a couple of years after revealing a 512 GB SDXC card at the same event. For the time being the card is still in the prototype stage, which means you won’t be finding one under the tree this holiday season. But given the 512 GB version cost $800, when this 1 TB version is finally available you probably won’t find too many people willing to gift you one.

printer question - laser vs inkjet

So not sure where to post this as it is not a Mac question but is a tech question. I am looking to replace a Xerox laser printer for office use with something that will last longer and cost less. The xerox desktop printer is pricey when it comes time to change toners, it needs drums and all the rest. I was looking at these new Epson EcoTank printers. Higher printer cost, but much cheaper and longer lasting ink. While the ink is cheaper, is there anything else in these things that would need to be replaced that wear out over time?

I use inkjet, but my inkjet printer is 44" wide. It is pretty much problem free, just load ink, clean the print heads and I am off and running. Is the same true for the small desktop inkjet printers? No other parts equivalent to drums or fusers for these smaller printers? Or is it really just add the ink, set it and forget it!

NYC Explosion

Explosion rocks NYC’s Chelsea neighborhood, injuring at least 25 people
A massive explosion rocked the Chelsea neighborhood in New York City, injuring at least 25 people, according to the city's fire and police departments. None of the injuries appear to be life-threatening. Investigators believe that it may have been caused by an explosive device in or close to a dumpster. Gas has been ruled out as the cause of the explosion, reports CNN.

White House officials say that President Obama has been informed of the explosion, "the cause of which remains under investigation."
(FastCompany)

* * *
The explosion in the area of 23rd Street between Sixth and Seventh avenues happened at about 8:30 p.m. police said. “Several” of those injured were brought to area hospitals, J. Peter Donald, a police spokesman, posted on Twitter.

Photos and accounts posted on social media showed large crowds — as well as a large law enforcement presence — in the area near where the explosion occurred.
(Washington Post)

This is apparently the dumpster in which something exploded:

What's the deal with the Calibration tool?

Every time I go through all the steps, I get to the end, click done and it changes! It always goes darker and changes from what the final settings were until I got to the end and named it. Every single freakin time! Then when I click back to go back to where it wasn't changed, the changes remain the same, and the gamma works less and less.. so the image gets darker and darker each time I try to go back and make it work.

I don't get it. What's the trick to this stupid tool?

Wiping An Non-mountable Hard Drive Clean

I have an early 2008, 24 inch iMac, and the internal hard drive appears to have died. Yesterday morning when started up, the HD was doing the ‘Clicking Dance’, and once the desktop appeared, everything was dead slow.

I did manage to get two EtreCheck statements.

The first one, Report generated 2016-09-11 10:00:41:
Hitachi HDS721010KLA330 disk0 : (1 TB) (Rotational)
EFI (disk0s1) <not mounted> : 210 MB
Macintosh HD (disk0s2) / : 983.21 GB (910.62 GB free) - 2 errors
Drive failure!

Recovery HD (disk0s3) <not mounted> [Recovery]: 650 MB
eDrive (disk0s4) /Volumes/eDrive : 16.00 GB (7.24 GB free)

And the other soon after, Report generated 2016-09-11 10:07:04:
Hitachi HDS721010KLA330 disk0 : (1 TB) (Rotational)
EFI (disk0s1) <not mounted> : 210 MB
Macintosh HD (disk0s2) / : 983.21 GB (911.33 GB free)
Recovery HD (disk0s3) <not mounted> [Recovery]: 650 MB
eDrive (disk0s4) /Volumes/eDrive : 16.00 GB (7.24 GB free)

From there things went downhill. I restarted with a copy of TechTool on a thumb drive, and soon realised that the Mac’s HD wasn’t mounting.

I just tried the discs that came with the Mac, Utility didn’t see the Mac’s HD, ditto for the Installer. Also tried to use the Apple Hardware Test, holding down the D key on start up. Both times the disc self ejected, and the folder with the question mark showed. And lots of soft clicking sounds.

Since the Mac is too old to pay someone to replace the hard drive, too involved to replace myself, and had a heating issue, I will donate it to the Personal Computer Museum here in Brantford, The Personal Computer Museum, Brantford, Ontario, CANADA - Recycle, donate, and browse your old computers, electronics, video games, and software. I’ve already donated four computers to the museum, five if the eMac that I gave to my niece some years ago, and soon realised that she’d prefer a modern laptop. Of the four computers that I donated, three were operational Macs and I used software to nuke the internal hard drives. The fourth computer was an operational Dell laptop, and I deleted as much info as I could. I trust Syd, but I still would like to wipe the hard drive clean if reasonably possible. But if it won’t mount, what should I do?

And if my concerns are totally weightless, please kindly advise as such.

Umlaut replaced by question mark inside a black diamond

Just checked a website again that I go to on a regular basis and I noticed that all German Umlauts are replaced by a

This now happens on FF, Safari, Chrome and Maxthon.

I assume it has something to do with the decoding and since it happens on all browsers it seems to me it must be a system issue of some kind.
But the Umlauts worked fine a couple of days ago when I last checked the website.

Any suggestion what would cause this?

Test here with Umlauts: ä, ü, ö, ß

RIP Prince Buster

Prince Buster, ska and rocksteady pioneer, dies aged 78
The first Jamaican to have a top 20 hit in the UK, he defined the sound of ska in the 60s before going on to inspire the Two Tone movement of the late 70s

Quote:

BBC DJ David Rattigan:
It is with great sadness that I have just learned of the death of Jamaica’s music icon and pioneer, Prince Buster. A true music legend. Prince Buster’s death has been confirmed by Mr. Desmond Young, President of The Jamaica Federation of Musicians. Deepest condolences go out to Prince Buster’s wife Mola Ali, his children and family members and manager Delroy Williams.

need software advice

Hello all.
I have a client who needs work done with Adobe Indesign.
The kicker is it stretches over months with large gaps of inactivity followed by intense activity. Obviously the subscription route is not ideal in this situation.

So, does anyone know where I could buy a copy of Indesign CS6 for the mac?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.
Robert:)

About the headphone jack or lack thereof

I think most people see this as classic Apple, eliminating a port (or drive) before anyone else, and before many people are ready for it.

So far, it has always worked out fine for both the company and the users despite plenty of initial whingeing.

This time, I wonder. The standard jack is convenient, simple, cheap and ubiquitous. It surely can't take up all that much internal space.

Instead of providing wireless ear buds, they're providing Lightning ones, so the "eliminating wires" philosophy isn't exactly front and centre. And some people will surely be peeved by not being able to charge and listen simultaneously. My own use case: most of my iPhone listening is done in the car, and my car does not have Bluetooth. So typically the phone is simultaneously charging and using an aux cable.

If I had an iPhone 7, I would need a dongle and (depending on the dongle) probably have to swap between charging and listening now and then. Not tragic, but less convenient than it is now.

And Apple's wireless ear buds... well there is zero chance I would ever buy them. I know I'm not the only one who has trouble keeping Apple's crappy-sounding buds in my ears, so these things in addition to almost certainly sounding lousy would get lost in a hurry, barring a third-party lanyard of some kind, which would largely defeat the purpose. I suspect a lot of people who actually want to roll with Bluetooth will be opting for third-party headphones or earbuds.

What do you think?

Is this Apple paving the way for the future again?

Or has Apple eliminated the headphone jack unnecessarily?

Headphone input on iPhone 5S click click clicks

A friend gave me her phone and when I plug in headphones/earbuds there's a click every two seconds or so. It makes it difficult to listen to music or have a conversation since it basically semi-cuts out.

What would be the cheapest fix? Is it worth fixing?

iPhone - Just as cost prohibitive as ever

As usual, Apple has priced the iPhone in the realm of insane. Would love the jet black, but of course we have to upgrade to the 128GB... so $1029 + tax for a cell phone. Yeah, that's reasonable.

Meanwhile, they start at $649 US, but us poor Canadian folk get to pay $899 for the base model. Awesome.

Currently, I have 3 iPhones. a 16GB iPhone 5s, a 64GB iPhone 6, and a 16GB iPhone 6 Plus. Even if I were to sell all 3, I STILL wouldn't have enough to get the jet black. :(

Using Time Machine to recover usb stick's contents

My favorite usb memory stick stopped working on me. I'm pretty sure that it was backed up on Time Machine as I would leave it plugged into my Macbook when Time Machine was running. Without using my usb stick, how do I access its files that would have been backed up on Time Machine?

Paying More For Less

It seems like everything you buy today is reduced in size or quantity. Add to that it costs more and you pay more for less. Why don't we have a look at what you have discovered in your everyday life that costs you more?

I will start by showing this pic I shot in the bathroom of our 2005 motor home. This is what toilet paper width used to be 11 years ago. It's been getting narrower every year since and the cost continues to climb. What have you noticed?

Telus vs. Fido ease of accessing public wifi

I'm on Telus and anytime I walk in somewhere public, it's a no brainer to get on their wifi: it automatically gets me in without trying.

If anyone is on Fido, do experience the same ease or do you have to sign in or press OK or fiddle around with it?

Considering changing carriers so want tot make sure accessing wifi is as automatic on Telus, who of course are more $$.

Work and personal phone: what can work access?

I use my work phone (android) for everything personal and professional.

My work is Getty savvy and catching up and just instilled a process stating that a
It can remotely erase all data, change password, etc. I understand this for upset terminated staff, but while I'm still staff I'm paranoid that they can look into my google Drive, personal Gmail (I use gmail for work too), or any texts or web browsing.

Thus, I'm considering getting a cheap Plan for personal use so I know they have no access and peace of mind.

Is this paranoia or should I simply have one phone and not worry much about it?

I don't like feeling Big Brothered.

iCloud storage: music from Spotify & flying

If I increase storage for iCloud, I'd still need wifi to access any music that is on Spotify and NOT downloaded, correct?

My issue is my iPhone is only 16GB and I need more to listen to music offline when I'm flying. Currently, I've used 50% of my 16GB which won't allow enough space for all of the music I want to access on a 10 hour flight.

Any remedies?

Looking to upgrade from iMovie HD...

yes, I know, it's an old version but I've stuck to it so far, not liking imovie08 when it came out.
I was going to upgrade to the latest but the reviews are fairly negative on the Apple download site.
I know I'm missing out on some great features, such as stabilizing shaky videos that newer versions have. Any recommendations..?

RIP Normie Kwong

Sometimes the good live a nice long life and Normie was one of the best.
Former Alberta Lt.-Gov. Norman Kwong dead at age 86 | Calgary Herald

Quote:

He broke through stereotypes like he once ran through tacklers, distinguishing himself first on the gridiron and then later in business and as Alberta’s lieutenant-governor.

He was Norman Kwong.

The son of Chinese immigrants, Kwong blazed his own trail to become one of the province’s most-respected figures — a man who somehow managed to be celebrated in both Calgary and Edmonton.

Indeed, he was widely known as the nicest guy you could ever meet.

Today, people across the province are mourning his death. Kwong died in his sleep on Saturday. He was 86 years old.

R.I.P. Jon Polito

I never knew his name - but I always found his characters enjoyable...

R.I.P. Jon Polito, a favorite of the Coen brothers

Jon Polito, the mustachioed, raspy-voiced character actor who squeezed both humor and surprising pathos from the many mobster and cop roles he played—most memorably for the Coen brothers—has died.

The news was passed along by Polito’s friend, filmmaker John McNaughton, who directed Polito in the early episodes of Homicide: Life On The Street where Polito first earned attention as the pugnacious, philosophical Detective Steve Crosetti, as well as in the anthology series Masters Of Horror. No official cause of death has been given, though Polito was diagnosed with incurable blood cancer in 2010. Polito was 65.

Providing a comprehensive overview of Polito’s incredibly prolific, 35-year career would be an impossible task; his work stretched from off Broadway to Broadway to cop dramas to sitcoms to short films to arthouse indies to big-budget family films to cartoon voiceovers, encompassing more than 200 credits.

Shameless plug: new YouTube Channel

Hi ehMacians. :) Thought I would take the liberty to post a shameless plug on a new project. Hope the admins don't get mad. :D

I'm in my 4th and final semester of Business Marketing at Conestoga college. I will hopefully be getting into the field of online Community Management and/or Event Planning or perhaps another niche in the marketing field. Eventually, I hope to be starting a new online community or two from what I've learned from school and other resources (And from the many mistakes and successes I had while running ehMac :o )

I've created a new YouTube Channel that will hopefully entertain (and make you chuckle), inform and inspire you. Will cover lots of topics like Business and Marketing, Technology, Motorcycles, Canadian Life, Physical and Mental Health and much more. Will see where it goes.

Here is a link to my channel.

My apologies for the occasional wind noise and shaky video, that will improve with better equipment and just learning over time. Next video will be about my recent trip to Amsterdam with my girlfriend.

The Threat Of Political Correctness, Real And Imagined

Yep, fits the policy to a 'T'!

Quote:

Has political correctness gone too far in Canada? Are Canadians too quick to take offence? Is Donald Trump’s rise to Republican presidential candidate somehow connected to this?

The Angus Reid Institute, a “not-for-profit, non-partisan public opinion research organization,” released a poll this week that raised these questions. Its findings are startling and important.

The survey of 1,510 people found that two-thirds of Canadians (67 per cent) believe that “too many people are easily offended these days over the language others use.” Three-quarters (76 per cent) believe “political correctness has gone too far.” Eighty per cent say, “These days, it seems like you can’t say anything without someone feeling offended.”

Clearly, political correctness is on Canadians’ minds. They believe that their language is being policed by unnamed forces. Three-quarters say they routinely hold their tongues in the presence of others, mostly to be polite, but also to avoid negative judgment.
