"Fake" Bell survey..?

Just a warning, and wondering if anyone else has had this happen..

Last night after closing my browser, a window appeared on my screen, saying Bell was doing a short survey of it's services and would I be interested in filling it out.
I know Bell is concerned about losing customers who are going wireless or" cutting the cable" and they call me every few months asking if I'm happy with their service, so I clicked OK.
The questions were few and basic, then, as a reward, I was offered the choice of some gifts. Rubbish stuff but suspiciously also an iPod, of which they were out of stock.
At the bottom, raving comments from satisfied respondents who had received the gifts.
@#$#$@%!!
I closed the window and at that hour could contact Bell but this morning they confirmed that they have had a number of complaints about these fake surveys.

I'm guessing the damage would have been done if I had clicked further for the gifts, or maybe given information. So far, no sign that I opened myself up to potential harm by filing in the survey...

Cell data suddenly stopped working

iPhone 6+ on 10.2.1 I updated yesterday and my data won't work. I have data turned on but the 3G (my carier doesn't support LTE)doesn't appear at the top of my screen. I've tried toggling Airplane Mode off and on, Cellular data off and on. I did a hard reset (home +sleep wake), and I reset network settings. Still no dice.

Any suggestions?

Can't connect to WiFi on Via Rail

Lately I often have difficulty connecting to WiFi on Via Rail in the train.

Well - more than difficulty - I just can't connect.
Signal strength is OK, I see the Via Rail ntwork, it's selected but the Mac just won't connect although I see others in the car using WiFi.

Anyone else have this issue?
Any suggestions what to do or check?

I came across this on the net - don't know if that would work but my Mac users don't have enough technical knowledge to remove all the DNS entries and then put them back again.
Seems odd to me as well that this is the issue.

Quote:

You may find that your Mac or PC has trouble connecting to the Via Rail wifi network. The free service requires that you login and accept the terms of use on an internal web page. However you may not be able to load this web page – if you have your DNS servers hard coded (entered by hand) to something like Google’s DNS servers.

The preferred way to connect on these “guest” networks is to leave the DNS entry blank. When you connect to the service the internal network server will supply the DNS that allows your computer to find the web page, where you can accept the terms.

This DNS snafu may also apply on a guest network at a hotel or coffee shop. On My Mac, I made a new location called “ViaRail WiFi” and left the DNS empty. When I get back to my home/office network, I will switch it back to my own preferred settings.

Used iPhone theft check removed from iCloud

Apple appears to have removed iCloud Activation Lock status tool
'Looks like scoring a used iPhone just got a bit more tricky.

Apple's iCloud Activation Lock tool—which allowed potential buyers to check if a used iOS device (i.e. iPhones, iPads, iPod Touches and Apple Watches) is tied to an active account—appears to have been removed from iCloud.com. The change was first noticed by MacRumors.

Quebec Mosque Shooting: 5 Dead

5 dead after shooting at Quebec City mosque
A shooting at a Quebec City mosque Sunday night has left five people dead and others wounded.

It occurred at the Centre Culturel Islamique de Quebec, the mosque’s president told media. Local reports say the 911 call came in around 7:55 p.m. ET.

“Why is this happening here? This is barbaric,” said the mosque‘s president, Mohamed Yangui.

Police say two people have been arrested, but have not confirmed the number of dead or wounded. They also say the situation is now under control and RCMP and the Sûreté du Québec are helping with the investigation.

Reports say there were dozens of people inside when the shooting occurred. Police say the occupants have since been evacuated.

* * *

...a witness told Reuters that up to three gunmen fired on about 40 people inside the Quebec City Islamic Cultural Center.

* * *

The Centre, which is located in the Sainte-Foy neighbourhood of Quebec City, was also the target of vandalism last summer when a pig’s head was delivered to it during Ramadan.

Looking to buy/upgrade video camera..

I've been using older mini dv cameras for the last 10 years or so but time to upgrade.
I travel a lot, and the cameras take a beating, from the arctic to desert, lots of dust and sand.
I travel on helicopters and Hercules C-130's and like to film boarding and un-boarding, sometimes get to sit upfront so I need something compact, not too cumbersome, that I can hold in one hand while carrying a bag. Should have motion stabilizing features, night shooting, sometimes I meet up with wild life so a zoom feature, or ability to change lens.
I've thought about a Go-Pro but they seem pricy, although if that's the only one that would meet those criteria, that's what I'd get...
Any suggestions?

iCloud memory storage

I received a notice that my iCloud memory storage was almost at its max, close to 5 GB. I deleted the backup and did another backup and now the storage memory is only at 1.1 GB, more than 3.9 GB of free memory. This has happened to me at least 3 other times. Why does this happen and how can it be fixed other than deleting and backing up again?

Thanks

How to get ride of pop up ads

I often get pop up ads on my Mac on the right hand side. I've searched how to get rid of these but all the pages I have found lead to pop up ads linked to either a browser or to the Notifications function of my Mac.

The pop up ads on my Mac are not linked to my Internet browsing and there is nothing in my Notifications panel that has any obvious link to these ads. So far, I have not found anything online that is related to my specific issue.

The ads are for "Mac Cleaner" and similar software. I have a feeling they came with my installation of Frostwire...

See attached pic for example.

Any suggestions on how to get rid of these would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Macbook Pro - Graphics Issue

My late 2011 MacBook Pro has been giving me display issues. It will give me a split background or vertical stripes. It gets worse when it gets hotter and the fan comes on. The computer runs fine in the background.

MacBook Pro Repair Extension Program for Video Issues - Apple Support

I'm aware of this program but sure enough, it ended a month ago and I've just started to have problems in the last couple of weeks.

Also, I thought it was for AMD graphics cards and mine has the Intel HD 3000.

So my question is, can I just replace the video card or do I have to replace the entire logic board? Any idea on what this is going to cost me? Thanks in advance.

Hello all, I was doing a crossword and this question came up. Backing into it the answer was OYL, but that was Olive's name and to my knowledge they were never married. I began looking and this answer comes up in crossword sites but not that I can find in Popeye sites. I don't recall Popeye ever having a last name....anyone know?

iPhone 6 iMessage suddenly not working!!

Not sure why, but recently my iMessages to any one on an iPhone have not been working. Instead of blue, the message bubbles are green.

It's telling me to turn on cellular data (which is already on) or wifi. The switch for iMessage keeps prompting that error and reverts back to being off.

I did power down and reboot, but still not working.

Any ideas for a solution?

Need advice - dying iMac HD

Hi Gang,

It was bound to happen someday; the HDD in my Mid 2011 20" iMac is setting out a slew of SMART errors. It's on its way out any day now. The way I see it I have two options.

1) Replace the HDD, with another HDD, an SSHD, and SSD or a combo of SSD and HHD. I don't have the tools or eyesight to do the repair work myself. So it's likely I'd be looking at $300+ to keep this puppy running.

2) Sell (noting the drive needs to be replaced) and replace with new equipment.

On 1, as much as I love this machine and the only thing wrong with it is the HDD, it's getting a little long in the tooth. I suspect it will fall off of the supported product list next year if not sooner. So in one way I'm loathed to invest more money in soon to be obsolete hardware.

On the other hand, Apple hasn't refreshed iMacs in a while and I'm not at all interested in the new MacBook lineup. I find spending full price on two year old hardware a little hard to swallow. Not keen on (but considering) getting used hardware.

In my shoes, which option would you pick? If I were to sell, it's a stock 20" iMac with 24GB RAM, but I don't know what a fair price to ask would be given the hard drive (And, it probably needs a good de-dust-bunnying!)

Is it doable? Feedback will be much appreciated..

Hello Folks,

So I have this late 2009 Macbook Pro, that my daughter somehow fried the logicboard. her story is that she connected a USB cable to an old Kodak camera, a msg came that power is too high or something like that and the MacBook Died.
Apple Store can fix for 500+tax so I said forget it.

Now, I have a thought, to freshen up thing a bit and since I've always been interested in Ubuntu but never had the chance to try..

Can I gut out the old component from the MacBook Pro, and build a new ubuntu machine from scratch using the Aluminum unibody as a shell?
what would a reasonable budget for this project? considering I'm no techie and this is not my day job, I'm doing this just for fun kinda thing..
Is it even doable? would there be 3rd party components that would fit inside the MBP?
where should I start? If I should start at all...

aah so many questions! any help would be much appreciated!!

iBooks/eBooks data migration q?

Cheers folks,

A sync question. After having another hurdle during a migration (surprise surprise ), I forgot to ask the genius about a certain q? during another step I wanted to take.

Here's the scenario:

Old Mac: used sparingly but is the one I use to sync my iPhone and iPad (all my music and eBooks are there)

New Mac: my work one which was cloned from a diff computer.

I’d like to ONLY migrate the eBooks from the Old to the New. The eBooks are on my iPad and the Old Mac.

What’s the best way to migrate the eBooks from Old Mac to New Mac? I've read a few stories, but was wondering if anyone here had done/tried anything like this?

I supposed I could do something like a drag from Old Mac to drag into New Mac.... 🤔

I've just had so many bizarre moments w/ migrations/syncing now, that I'm always looking around for answers before actually starting the process.

Thx!

Photos in iPhone

I recently noticed that when I was looking at my albums in photos on the iPhone, all of them were there. The problem is that when I synced my iPhone with the latest version of iTunes I purposely chose only certain albums to be on my iPhone, yet all my albums are there. They also say under each album "from my Mac". Also each album is duplicated!! This, of course, uses more memory.

Why did this happen and How do I fix this?

Gotta get Ipad Mini 2 back to IOS9

I had an Ipad Mini 2 running IOS 9.3.3 which worked fine with Itunes on the Macbook/Mini running 10.7.5. Proving that no good deed goes unpunished, I loaned my Ipad Mini 2 to a friend who was going through a long period of rehab after an auto accident. Instead of doing a factory reset when he returned the Ipad he did a restore. I am now stuck with an Ipad which Itunes on my Macbook/Mini will not recognize. The system software on the MB/Mini can be upgraded but the cost of software updates is not very attractive since the software is working well with the version I have. Ipad IOS 10 doesn't have any features that I need/want and functioned very well with IOS 9. I did try restoring my Ipad using a Mac running newer system software that recognized the Ipad in Itunes but it was not successful. Is there any way to get my Ipad back to IOS 9 short of buying a new Ipad 2 with factory installed IOS 9 and selling my old one e.g. jailbreak it?

AppleTV and Netflixs

This one is complex and driving me nuts! I have a Canadian purchased AppleTV that works perfectly in Canada with AirPlay on my iPhone, MacBook Air and iPad with Netflix's.
I brought it to Thailand and connected it. When I play Netflix's on myiPhone it works fine but if I try to mirror it on AppleTV it will not play the Netflix's signal and reports an error. When I turn data on, it mirrors but Netflix gives me an error, won't display. Netflix's won't play on my iPad even with no Apple TV mirroring but it runs on my MacBookAir no problem unless I try and use the AppleTV or the Mac built in display, both give an error and Netflix's stops.
The solution I came up with, last choice, is to use the cable ( forget what Apple calls this port on the new MacBookAir, ) to HDMI. This works but I can not get an overscan image to cover the header bar from the mac.
Any idea why Netflix's won't run in mirror mode or built in display with airplay but runs on the iPhone not the iPad?
Thanks

Hi: I have a 2012 MacBook Pro with 16 gigs of RAM and a brand new 2 TB HD. I inadvertently did not turn off 'FieVault' when I installed the new drive. It has been in the encryption stage now for 2 days with no end in sight. Is there a way to stop this process? Anyone here 21:9 aka ultra wide monitor owners??

I'm actually surprised more vendors aren't putting these out. I've heard nothing but great things from owners . But I've only seen them from LG (who has several models out), Dell (who had 2 I believe), and a few lesser known brands.

I have a 25" i'm about to set up. Love that 2 page layout, and possible 3 if you move to the 3440 x 1440 resolution units. Totally kills the need for 2 monitors.

Documents suddenly become "Read only" - what gives?

I have had two cases today where a document suddenly became read only or I couldn't open it at all because I supposedly didn't have the right permissions.

Trying to figure out what is going on.

I'm on 10.11.5

First document was a two page pdf.
Comes up that it can't be opened because I don't have the right permissions.
The pdf was on my Mac, I had looked at it before, so don't know why there would suddenly be a problem.
Checked Info and it shows that I have read & write permissions.
I changed that to read only, then back to read & write, but that made no difference.
The problem seems to be just with Preview - when I tried to open the pdf with either Acrobat 9 or Acrobat Reader - worked with either one.

The second problem was with an Excel spreadsheet I just updated.
Comes back with the message that I can't update it - to update it I need to assign a different name.
Saved the changes as "untitled" that worked fine.
But then I thought of any changes - I had changed the name of the spreadsheet and added p/o (as in part of).
Turns out if I delete p/o from the name I can update and save it just fine.
Is the Mac OS getting confused because of the "/"?

Pricing query 27" Cinema Display

Good Afternoon,

It's been a while since I was here last but it was the first place I thought of when it came to this question. I got a new computer (5K Retina iMac 27") and because the screen size I really don't need a second monitor any more. I had the 27" Apple Cinema Display LED (non-thunderbolt version) as a second display to my 21.5" iMac and they worked great together.

I would like to have a second monitor but I don't need one so big, so I wondering if I could get some feedback on what you think it might be worth.

Thanks in advance

Home sharing playback problems

I use my iPad mini (1st gen) as a home sharing playback device plugged into the living room stereo to play the music in my iTunes library on my Mac Pro. No problems for years and years. Ever since I upgraded to iOS 9 shortly before 10 came out and it became unsupported, playback has been intermittent at best. It either gets choppy in the middle of songs or the currently playing song finishes and that's it. It either stops playing completely or the time count on the next song advances and eventually it resumes outputting audio wherever it is into the next song.

The Mac Pro's on a wired ethernet connection while the iPad mini obviously is connecting over wifi. I went over the the network settings for the wifi and the Mac's ethernet with a fine tooth comb and made a couple of changes (disabled iTunes sharing over the LAN so Home Sharing was the only sharing mechanism turned on, enabled jumbo ethernet packets, static IP on the Mac Pro, forced the wifi to G only and one channel only) and that's cleared up most of the mid song choppyness in the playback; that only happens occasionally now. The problem with the current song ending and the next one never starting, or audio starting partway through is still present.

I hooked up my iPhone SE today instead of the iPad mini to see if the iPad's simply too long in the tooth and the next song failing to start problem happens less, but it's still frequent so I don't think the age of the iPad is necessarily to blame.

Is there anything I'm overlooking that I should check? I deliberately skipped iOS 8 because the home sharing function's important to me and I'm not happy about how moving from iOS 7 to 9's made it painful to listen to.

seeing missed calls on my iPhone from another iPhone

So I share an Apple ID with my father and mother. We all have iPhones. The Apple ID is shared because it is a work Apple ID for our family business, we share contact info and calendar. I recently upgraded to the iPhone 7 plus from my iPhone 6 plus. I gave my mom the iPhone 6 and restored from a backup. I have a few missed calls in my list from people calling my moms phone. One being my sister so I was able to confirm she was indeed calling my moms number.

I do not see anything with FaceTime or anything in iCloud settings for anything that could possibly do this. Is there something I am missing here or why would I see missed calls from another phone that has the same Apple ID? Running latest iOS updates.

El Cap Irritant

Newish computer running el Capitan. Something I have done since the first version of Jaguar is maintain a small rtf file at root level. Essentially I just record any software or updates and the date installed. Occasionally useful when something creates an issue. Almost always iTunes or Adobe.

Anyways in el Capitan I cannot just write an addition to that file. I have to create a duplicate, write the changes, delete the original then move the duplicate to the root level. The last 2 steps require giving entering admin password, making for an additional 5 steps for what should be a very easy task.

I keep it root level for easy reading when booted from a different volume or if just using another user profile.

Any way to avoid the OS X 2-step and still keep this file at root level? The usual tricks don't work.

I am not sure that this is the proper area to ask this but I have tried various forums and have not found an answer that has satisfied me.

I am using an iPhone 6.

I have done some extensive researching to decide which app is better. I am now totally perplexed!! I have tried both with great success and some disappointments. Each has their pros and cons. It seems to me, after research, that it is a personal preference.

Is that what it comes down to??

antivirus and mackeeper

Have things changed since 2014, date of the last thread I could find on this issue, the gist of which was antivirus not necessary?
An article in Trousseaux d’accès & mots de passe made the point compellingly to me that things have changed. See article "Non, non, non ..."
(I don't know whether this is a French-only mag but no doubt many of you will be able to read it anyway.)
It has a couple of examples. Flashback, a virus of some sort that attaches itself to Flashplayer updates (Oh how I'd love to free myself from Flashplayer!) for one.
And recommends Antivirus for Mac from Intego. I also wonder about F-secure. Anybody have any recommendations? Including "forget it".
Incidentally, there is a link to an article on the same page which provides detailed instructions on how to get COMPLETELY rid of macKeeper. It worked for me.

Ink Jet Printer: in grayscale

For a sec, i was considering getting an inkjet printer simply for grayscale (b/w) prints. I don't see myself printing much, but some days, I just want to write on some paper/do some highlighting (old school).

1. Am I crazy?
2. Will I be burning through the black ink, and just regret it in the long run (rather than buying b/w laser)?

Just saw a $50 wifi inkjet, which will run in grayscale. I don't need fancy resolution, just something readable.

H!

HBD iPhone: 10yrs ago today

The iPhone was unveiled 10yrs ago to the day. I happened to attend the now defunct MWSF that year, and I recorded what might have been one of 1st videos of the iPhone to hit the internet - uploaded the same hour. A great memory, and it was absolute chaos on the floor.

Q? will the iPhone be around 10yrs from today?

Opening Ports for torrent

Hello,
I have a IMAC and the apple extreme router connected to it.
I run a PC to the router for internet access. All works fine.
I am trying to run a bit torrent app on the PC however it refused to seed a torrent but it downloads them fine. I have been told I have to open ports in order for it to seed?

I am very confused how to do this, what machine I do what on etc… Can anyone walk me through it? Possibly a windows question and not the mac?

appreciate any help

Apple TV in Asia

I purchased an AppleTV in Canada but I will be in Asia for 3 months and I am wondering if it will work in Thailand? Netflix informed me their feed is available although they can not promise programming and language choices will be the same as Canada.
I had an original AppleTV that I had bought in Hong Kong over there and it worked but did not support air play. Trying to avoid purchasing the Apple cable for MacAir to HDMI, but I will if that is the only solution. Anyone out there know the answer? Thanks.

5 dead, 8+ injured, shooting at Ft. Lauderdale airport

5 dead, 8 injured in Fort Lauderdale airport shooting in Florida

Five people were killed and at least eight others injured after a gunman opened fire inside the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport in Florida on Friday afternoon.

Former White House Press Secretary Ari Fleischer was in the airport at the time and tweeted “shots have been fired” and “everyone is running” shortly after 1 p.m. ET Friday.

Broward County Sheriff’s office confirmed there was “one subject in custody.”

The shooter was later identified as Esteban Santiago, 26, of New Jersey. Santiago had a military identification card at the time of the shooting, according to a spokesman for U.S. Senator Bill Nelson of Florida.

A witness told Global News that the shooter did not yell or scream, and that he didn’t appear to be targeting a specific person or group. The witness described the shooter as being about 5′ 7″ tall with short, dark hair.

The Canadian embassy in Washington, D.C. denied reports that the shooter may have arrived in Fort Lauderdale on a Canadian flight.

“We understand from officials he was on a flight originating in Anchorage transiting through Minneapolis and landing Fort Lauderdale,” Christine Constantin, a spokeswoman for the Canadian embassy in Washington, D.C., said in a statement.

Earlier, Chip LaMarca, a Broward County commissioner told the Associated Press the suspect was a passenger on a Canadian flight.

LaMarca told the news agency the shooter pulled a gun handgun from a checked bag, loaded the weapon in a bathroom before opening fire in the baggage terminal.

1 iMac 2 time machine backups?

I use time machine for our Macs at work, each has their own backup. One computer is the main computer with all our data and it is backed up regularly via time machine. I want an offsite backup as well. I bought a device... well pre ordered that will let me plug in an external hard drive at home and be able to connect to it at work like a normal external drive. So I want to have 2 time machine backups, one to the local drive that will be connected and the other to the offsite drive that will be connected. Does MacOS allow me to do this?

I will say I am not stuck on having it done by time machine for the offsite backup. I am open to options for daily automatic incremental backups if there is something else that will do this.

thanks

Got an Apple Watch? You might want this

Elago's W3 Stand for Apple Watch can turn Apple's modern wearable device into a classic Macintosh, all while charging and protecting the Apple Watch. The Nightstand Mode-only accessory has a slot for the Apple Watch's charging puck and a small compartment that you slide the Apple Watch into, turning its 38mm or 42mm display into that of a retro Mac.

Cannot download iPhone pics to Mac... passcode error?

Hello!

I'm usually the go to tech support for my friend but I just can't solve this one. Hopeing someone can help.

Her iPhone is fully up to date (iOS 10.2) and she's running OSX 10.7.5 on her MBP.

She's trying to upload her pics to her computer. Yes, we'll get the cloud going, but she wants to do it this way first and I don't understand why it's not working. When she plugs in her phone (yes, she clicks trust), she gets an error in Photos and iTunes.

Photos error: Photos in Camera Roll of "MICHY" cannot be imported because the device is locked with a passcode. You must unlock the device to import them.

iTunes error: iTUnes could not connect to the iPon "MICHY" because an invalid response was received from the device.

The thing is, she doesn't have a passcode on her phone. We've troubleshooted a ton. Image Capture also doesn't work. We've re-set up her phone WITH a passcode, tried again, same messages.

This is getting frustrating... and as someone who can usually solve things, I don't know what else to try!

Help wanted! Please!! Thanks, looking forward to it...

Terribly slow mac mail!!!😫

I have rebuilt each and every one of my mailboxes in Mac Mail and repaired my harddrive and used Onyx all to no avail in trying to speedup my mail. I have an early 2008 iMac operating El Capitan 10.11.6. I am wondering if the microprocessor can keep up with the requirements of the OS?

It has reached the stage where I can type almost a complete line of text before it shows up on the screen. Terribly frustrating!

Any suggestions on how to speedup Mail gratefully accepted.

Cheers

Ipad Pro Keeps Saying "No Internet Connection" for wifi

Hey Guys
We have a iMac with the apple router connected. The network works fine. All our android devices, roku boxes and iPhones connect fine, however our iPad Pro continuously stops connecting and says No internet connection. I have tried reseting router, restarting iMac, resetting all network settings on iPad etc.. it does not help.

It seems that the more items we connect to the router the iPad is always the first to NOT connect. Is there a way to force it to stay connected? Is there a limit to how many devices can connect? Sometimes if I disconnect other items the iPad will join but it is very frustrating as we never have issues connecting with any other device. Seems absurd that a $2000 tablet sucks so bad on wifi? Any help would be greatly appreciate.

thanks
Jim

Question about IMAP email and multi users

I have been mulling over changing our business email to google. Our local provider does not have a spam filter.. well it does, but it does not learn so things are constantly going in junk, real email. So it is turned off. It is a POP email account right now. If I switch to Google it will be IMAP.

Now I know IMAP works differently then POP and want to make sure I understand everything before I jump in to this change. Our setup is we have 3 Macs all getting our mail work email info@xxxx.ca. Along side these 3 Macs are 2 iPhones and 2 iPads getting the same email so all in all 7 devices getting info@xxxx.ca. This is no problem right now, if I delete on my computer or iPad it does not effect anyone else. I was reading something on another forum where someone moving an email on one device had it moved on the other. We all handle emails a bit differently and would be a nightmare if I deleted something and it just vanished from everywhere else, or if another user moved an email to a folder that I do not use. Would be a lot of confusion and hunting around for things.

Anyways, is this always the case with IMAP? Or does this only happen if you change things in the webmail through a browser? Everything is coming into Apple Mail for MacOS/OSX and iOS. I would want each device to handle the emails separately when it comes to moving them around, or deleting. Hope that all makes sense.

RIP Mariah Carey's career

Mariah has slowly become nothing but another 50 yr flashing hair and boobs in hopes
to stay relevant.
Lets hope we dont see her much more in 2017 - unless she seeks treatment for drugs and / or alcohol - i cant not explain her performance / behavior any other way.
