SSD not showing up in disk utility

I have a Samsung 850EVO 250 gb SSD that I used as a secondary hard drive in my Win 10 PC at home. I had an issue with Windows 10 about 8 months ago and did a clean install. In the process I wiped the drive clean when formatting the main SSD for a new install of Win 10. Since then Win 10 would never see the second drive to even give me an option to format. I pulled it out yesterday and brought it to work to try formatting it with Disk Utility via a toaster dock connected via USB 2 to an iMac running El Capitan.

The drive would not even show up in Disk Utility, it only shows the main drive. The toaster dock does work, as soon as I plugged in the backup drive it showed up in disk utility.

Is the SSD dead or is there something else I can do to try and get this SSD to mount so I can reformat?

Disable auto video play.....

I know there are settings to disable auto play of videos in certain apps, such as Facebook, but, in order to save data usage, I haven't yet figured out where the setting for Chrome iOS is. When visiting CBS news, there is always a video thumbnail that auto plays which I would rather disable. Any ideas if this is possible?

DownThemAll not recognizing some pdf links

Hello everyone -

Is any one using DownThisAll?
http://ift.tt/2nBntul

I was looking for a way to download all pdf files from a webpage at once and this Firefox add-on seems to do the job.
Reviewd were very positive - I tried it on the webpage where I wanted to download the pdf files but for some reason DtA doesn't detect all of the pdf links.

This is the website:
LGB.de - Gesamtliste Schmalspur

DtA detects all the pdf's where the link is shown as "download" but none of the links called "anzeigen" even though "anzeigen" is also a pdf and one can certainly download each one of those files individually.

I just started using DtA last night; maybe I'm missing something that a regular user can point out.
Didn't find a DtA discussion group so I thought I'd ask here.

As an aside - are there any other free apps or add-ons that will download all pdf files from a web page automatically?

Thanks

Sweet: Hidden files toggle in Sierra

This works in 10.12 Sierra:

Quickly show hidden files in macOS
There was a time in the history of macOS (formerly known as Mac OS X) when you had to use a Terminal command or a third-party utility to show the hidden files and folders littered all over your storage drive. I won’t go down the rabbit hole of why you would want to see these hidden files and folders, but know that Apple has finally built-in a simple keyboard shortcut to do just that—and it works in the Finder as well as Open/Save dialog boxes.

Simply hit Command + Shift + . (period key) and macOS will instantly make them visible (as seen on the right in the image above). Hit the shortcut again and they return to their hidden state.

Wikileaks: iPhones hacked by CIA, NSA, etc. since 2008

Fresh Wikileaks Dump Shows CIA Was Hacking iPhones A Year After Launch
A new Wikileaks release called DarkMatter was released today, affirming that the Central Intelligence Agency has long targeted Apple Macs, creating malware designed to evade the tech giant's security mechanisms. The leak also revealed the CIA had been targeting the iPhone since 2008, a year after the landmark device was released.

That slice of info was included in a small dump of information Wednesday, that included manuals for a handful of implants and rootkits - malware that can hide at the lowest level of Apple systems, the kernel and the firmware of the device.

One of CIA's implants was called NightSkies, a manual for which noted there was a version for iPhone, then appearing to list the year 2008, though Wikileaks claimed the tool was operational in 2007, the year of launch. "NightSkies 1.1 exists for the iPhone," a CIA manual read, in a document entitled DarkSeaSkies that dated back to 2009.

Qubec Serperation?

It seems less and less likely these day, but I am going to ask this question:

Would Canada and or/Quebec be better off being autonomous nations without one or the other getting in the way of the others national plans and priorities?

People can obviously say whatever they want but I mean it as a serious question... humour is to be expected, just try to keep it real and civil as much as possible.

Peace out.

What a tight shirt I am talking that way, but so be it...

Stephen Hawking: Going into space!

This man has defied the odds to an impossible degree, and given so much to the understanding of our universe. I hope he gets the chance to experience this.

Stephen Hawking to Visit Space Aboard Virgin Galactic

World-famous physicist Stephen Hawking plans to join an eager lineup of customers for Virgin Galactic suborbital flights.

In an interview on Monday with the British program Good Morning Britain, the physicist and cosmologist said that he's been wanting to visit space ever since he experienced a weightless flight aboard a plane that flies parabolic loops to simulate zero gravity. He was likely referring to a Zero Gravity Corp. flight in 2007 aboard a specially-modified Boeing 727-200 aircraft called G-FORCE ONE.

"My ambition is to fly into space," remarked Hawking, speaking with a computerized voice from his wheelchair. "I thought no one would take me, but [Virgin founder] Richard Branson has offered me a seat on Virgin Galactic."

Virgin Galactic has been aiming to fly tourists into space for more than a decade, aboard SpaceShipTwo. The flight plan calls for SpaceShipTwo to be lifted to 50,000 feet aboard a carrier ship, called WhiteKnightTwo, before being released. SpaceShipTwo will then rocket into suborbital space, long enough for tourists to experience five minutes of weightlessness before returning to Earth.

Technical difficulties and a fatal test flight in October 2014 have pushed the first tourist launch date of Virgin Galactic forward indefinitely. Virgin resumed test flights in 2016 and has a reported wait list of 700 people waiting for their chance to experience space. A ticket is reported to cost $250,000.

Hawking has a condition called ALS, or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. Popularly known as Lou Gehrig's disease, the condition causes the death of neurons that control voluntary muscles. Hawking was diagnosed in 1963 and was initially expected to live only two years. Four decades later, however, he remains an active physicist.

Audio Record a Webinar on ElCapitan?

I want to record the audio on a webinar - currently running ElCapitan

On OS 10.6.8 I used to use sSoundflower with audacity but now when I select the recording device on audacity the only options are Built in input or Apowersoft Audio Device.

I don't recall ever downloading Apowersoft but maybe a did a trial version.
I just don't want the recording stopping half way through because the trial perod is finished.
The webinar is expected to run for 2 1/2 hours.

When I checked Quicktime audio recording, Soundflower does come up as an input, but I have never used Quicktime before to record a webinar.
Does QT automatically record any audio that would come through the Mac Mini speaker or headphones?

Any really simple options to record audio when listening to a webinar on ElCapitan?

Mac user in need of Windows solution

I'm in need of some practical advice.

I've been a dedicated mac user for over a decade, and suddenly find myself needing to use Windows for the Canadian version of Quickbooks desktop. I don't have the option to use on online version, or another accounting software, as that involves changing accountants, etc. Some problems are just not worth having.

Right now, I mainly use an iMac for work and a little 11" air for casual stuff. I thought of loading windows on the air, but the resolution is just too low to be usable for work as far as I'm concerned. Also, the idea of putting Windows on my iMac makes me cringe.

So I'd like to get another machine to be used primarily for Windows. I've considered some older Thinkpads, but am having too much trouble finding one with a resolution of 1920 x 1080. Even the 1600 x 900 versions have proven difficult to find.
I'm looking at a budget of about $500, as I don't want to invest too much in this Windows project.

Other high resolution laptops seem to exceed my budget. I'm starting to think I'll have to settle for some kind of Windows based desktop. I have a monitor already and can get mouse, keyboard used.

What do you guys do if you need to regularly run Windows? Running Parallels or some kind of VMware on my iMac sounds unappealing. Are there any other good options?

Automation is the future

Many lines of work will be replaced in the near future through automation.

I think this creates a stronger case for the population to have a guaranteed basic income than ever before.

Doing so will free people from mundane tasks, and enable them to pursue self improvement, and have more time for family and social activity.

This could also enable a streamlining of how things are run in the world. Homelessness and poverty eliminated. No longer any need in governments for welfare departments, social housing, food banks, etc.

The income tax system could be eliminated and replaced with a flat tax on any money earned. This would end the need for complex accounting and end things like the IRS.

Automation could be a great thing for humanity, if it is done right. Done wrong, it will create chaos and wide spread poverty and increase inequality.

Thoughts?

readium-js-viewer _all_ CHROMEAPP.js - MTML Exploit?

Hi,
I ran ClamXav last night on a MacBook Pro running 10.6.8 and it came up with one hit called
readium-js-viewer _all_ CHROMEAPP.js
which ClamXav calls an HTML Exploit.

Googled for it to find out exactly what it was and if it's something I should worry about but didn't really get anything concrete via google.

I use the Chrome browser very seldom; I assume it's related to Chrome
So I'm tempted to just delete it.

But I was wondering if anyone knows what this is and why ClamXav picked it up as malware; google seems to think it's perfectly good software.

Carbon Copy Cloner help

I installed Carbon Copy Cloner on an iMac at work, I was/am going to use it to copy on a weekly or data folder containing all our files. I don't need a full clone of the hard drive, I am only worried about content (have time machine and another offsite backup). So I purchased the latest version of Carbon Copy Cloner (v4) and started to run it on Saturday. It got interrupted in the process and stopped. Looking at this computer it now has about 70 gigs free instead of the 400 gigs free it had before starting this process. What has happened here?? I am assuming CCC is eating up my space as nothing else was installed to take up this much room. It was copying to a hard drive I have at home for a second offsite backup. Does Carbon make some other backup somewhere on the main hard drive?

iPhone 5C problems

Hey guys, my iPhone 5C seems to be having some weird problems.

1. It can't seem to find our time zone, therefore the time is incorrect. I can set it manually but.....
2. It also randomly restarts and looses the time I manually set. I've only seen it reset to either 12:00 Am or 7:00 Pm.
3. The battery percentage moves around very quick and is very random. Leaving it plugged in for a long time I can get it to 100 percent but if it randomly restarts, it usually shows below 10 percent.
4. Another note, I have only got it activate once using iTunes, however without I/T I can't get the phone to activate. It's saying it can't connect to the server and to try again later. It's connected to wifi and is showing 2 - 3 bars of 3G. I'm assuming that it has something to do with the date/time problem. Makes sense if I'm able to fix the time zone problem, I should then be able to connect to the apple server.

Has anyone seen this problem before, and if so, were they able to get it fixed?

BTW I have already tried a new battery with no change, and I refuse to ship it out to Apple.

Thanks in advance.

ATV Airplay Mirroring

Since changing computers and with it the inevitable upgrade to Sierra I've lost the ability to mirror the desktop through the ATV2 to the tv. I've run through the usual on-line check list:

-Boxes are properly checked in Display preferences.
-Computer and ATV2 are on the same wi-fi network

What makes this truly bizarre is that I can stream music and video from iTunes to the TV without a hitch. There are three other computers in the house running either Mavericks or Yosemite that can mirror with no problem at all.

I'm running 5.3 on the ATV2 (it's jailbroken) and upgrading the software isn't an option at this point. I've searched for an answer on-line but to no avail beyond what I've already done.

My options include;

-downgrading to Yosemite or El Capitan (I'm using a 2015 MBA so this may be a possibility)
-upgrading the software on the ATV2 and lose the jail brake.

Before trying anything drastic I wanted to put it out here just in case I was missing something.

Any ideas?

I have an old iPad mini, version just before the Retina models came in. It still functions, but the screen is all shattered and there is an actual hole in the bezel. I was going to originally get the glass replaced till I saw the hole.

Is this something that can be replaced? When they do the glass replacement does it replace the whole bezel beneath? If it costs too much I am not sure it is worth fixing. Was hoping to get it fixed up for my nieces birthday at the end of the month as a gift.

My mom has a MacBook Air 13" (mid 2012). It was running Yosemite and had a battery issue. As soon as I disconnected the power cable the computer would go blank and would only be usable when connected to the power cable. I have a genius bar appointment later today. While at work I thought I would do an update to Sierra. Now with the MacBook Air updated to Sierra it runs normally. Telecoms Made $37 Million Last Year Charging To Unlock Cellphones

Consumer groups say unlocking fees are unfair, especially if you own your own phone

Quote:

Canadian telecoms made a total of $37.7 million last year by charging customers to unlock their cellphones. That's a whopping 75 per cent jump in this source of revenue compared to 2014.

Telecoms often order locked phones from manufacturers that are programmed to work only with their service. Then they charge a fee — typically $50 — to unlock the phone if a customer wants to switch providers.

The charge is unpopular with consumers. It has even been referred to it as a 'ransom fee.'

The unlocking revenue total was provided by the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission. The CRTC said it could not confirm the exact number of providers in the tally, other than to say, it was "up to seven."

It also wouldn't provide company names or the breakdown from each one. That's because the wireless carriers argued that releasing their unlocking revenues publicly would put them at a competitive disadvantage.

CBC News did confirm that the $37.7 million total included Bell, Rogers and Telus, which own a lion's share of the Canadian wireless market.

Unlocking charge described as 'hostage fee'

The CRTC is looking into the issue of unlocking fees following much criticism about the fairness of the charge.

The controversial fee was a hot topic at a CRTC hearing last month. Consumer groups argued customers shouldn't be dinged for the service — especially if they've paid off their phone.

"You should be able to unlock it [for free] at the very least once you've paid off the device. You own it," says John Lawford, executive director with the Public Interest Advocacy Centre in Ottawa.

He also points out that it's the provider who supplies the locked phone in the first place, and then charges the consumer to undo the process.

"Who's the author of whose misfortune here?" says Lawford.

ABS Brakes suck

OK so I should know better than to drive a mini-van with summer tires in winter, but it does have ABS brakes and the forecast was good.

Anyways driving home in a snow storm. Crested a steep hill at a very conservative 60KPH. For what ever reason the snow had been piling up in this one location and there were ten trucks at a standstill attempting to come uphill.

Realizing there might be drivers out of their vehicles I did what we are instructed to do and pressed hard on the brakes. Nice straight line, I could feel various wheels locking and unlocking but zero change in speed. Reverted to driving mountain driving 101, put it in neutral and pumped brakes hard and fast. Had it down under 40K before passing the first truck. At that point I could have easily stopped or swerved had the need arisen.

BTW it is front wheel drive and attempting to downshift could easily have allowed the rear end to pass the front. Neutral allowed for better braking with no loss of control.

Moral spend the money on good snow tires and forget ABS altogether. An expensive useless option.

FWIW our other car has snow tires but no ABS and would have easily slowed with just a light application of the brakes.

Apple Shareholders Overwhelmingly Reject Diversity Proposal

Quote:

Apple shareholders rejected a proposal yesterday that would have required the company to improve the diversity of its top ranks. This is the second year in a row that Apple shareholders have shot down the proposal, with just over 95 percent of the vote opposing it this time around — slightly more than last year.

The proposal, submitted by shareholders Tony Maldonado and Zevin Asset Management, asked Apple to “adopt an accelerated recruitment policy ... to increase the diversity of senior management and its board of directors." Maldonado and Zevin had argued that Apple’s upper ranks were responding too slowly to the company’s own diversity initiatives and that it would ultimately come back to bite them, be it through missing talent or new opportunities.

“THIS IS JUST THE BEGINNING OF A LONG BATTLE.”

Though Maldonado didn’t expect the initiative to pass, he was looking to hit at least 6 percent of the vote this year, which would have allowed him to try again in 2018. He missed the target — and one reason why may be that Apple itself encouraged shareholders to reject the proposal.

“Apple basically duped the investors, to be quite honest,” Maldonado told The Verge in a phone call today. “They conned ’em to say, ‘Look, we're on top of it. Don’t worry about it. Everything’s fine.’ However, I believe that shareholders don’t have all information as to the background of the issue.”

Wow! The iPhone 7 is really nice!

I was checking out the jet black iPhone 7 today. I wish I hadn't!! I was comparing the display to my iPhone 6. Definitely more vivid and an improvement in color saturation.

I watched a lot of video reviews hoping someone would do a thorough comparison with the two displays, but I never did see anyone do that.

Anyway, I was impressed. The display itself seems to be closer to the glass as well.. as if it's part of the glass. I didn't think it was possible to get it any closer, yet there it was.

I just wish it wasn't so freakin expensive. I can't justify spending $1000+ on a cellphone.

Meanwhile, the iPhone 8 is going to be spectacular, and will likely be $1200-1300 knowing Apple. Pretty close to what the MacBook Pro used to cost. Insane.

OK, now the problems.
Screen has some weird distortions along the left and right edges (maybe 5mm depth each side) - it doesn't appear to be a vid card problem. The fans are a bit noisy, but otherwise this machine has been a workhorse.

Local pickup near the beaches.
