KRACK - WiFi- Man in the Middle attack

so by now i am sure people have heard of the this attack by now.
if not here is a link : http://ift.tt/2yilORk

I just wanted to start a thread about who has patched their access points and which brand they have. I want to know which manufacturers have patched and which have not.

here are the brands i use and if they are patched:

1. Aerohive - Patched
2. Datto - Patched
3. Sophos - Patched
4. Dlink - not patched [dir-868L ] Dlink DIR-890L - patched
5 cisco - mostly not patched except for meraki - in progress
[another reason why we are as whole removing and not recommending cisco/meraki to our clients. ]

JFK Files: The 2017 Release

So - what's everyone's favourite bit of the JFK file reveal so far?

The most juicy files, apparently, even Trump wouldn't / couldn't release (delayed until sometime in 2018 at least).

Here are a couple that are making the rounds:

JFK files: British paper got anonymous call just before assassination Guardian UK

...and the second we already knew quite a bit about, but it's worth reposting. For those who see the USA as the guiding beacon of light, freedom and justice in the world, don't forget that it has a murderous history of interfering in the internal affairs of independent nations (Guatemala 1956; Cuba 1961; Chile 1973; Grenada 1983; many, many others). Cuba has borne the brunt of several of these acts, to name just a couple:

JFK Files Expose CIA Plot to Stage Miami Bombings and Blame Fidel Castro TelesurTV

Hi, I’m looking for a 6s Plus or 7 Plus with at least 64gb. Unlocked or locked to Telus.

Is there a secret key I don’t know about?

I recently updated the iOS on my iPad Air. What I have noticed to some dismay is that I will be typing away trying to place a post here on ehMac when all of a sudden my chubby little fingers must hit some magic key combination and my complete text vanishes......is there some key combination on the iPad that deletes text? I’ve looked on line but can only find shortcuts for regular Mac. I do know it must live around the space bar.

Calendar and notes - iphone, ipad, Mac

I am not sure what the problem is - and really have no way of knowing how to fix it - but this calendar thing is really frustrating.

So..I have an Iphone4S, an iPad mini - probably the first or second generation and a Macbook Pro(13-inch, Mid 2009)

As far as I know, each of them has updated software (just tried on the mini and phone this morning and it never did find whether the device was updated - just got the ongoing roundabout).

The problem lies herein - if I update something on my calendar on the Macbook - it does not show up on the phone all the time. - so that is problem number one

The second problem is something I just decided to start doing - make a list and have it show on all devices.

It appears if the list is made on the phone or ipad - it will show up on either/both of them. But if I decide to make a list on the Macbook - it doesn't show on either of the others.

Any suggestions?

(I have tried changing settings - but since there are so many places the settings might be - I may have missed something):(

Fats Domino RIP

R.I.P. Robert Guillaume

One of my favourite actors - both Soap and Benson were regularly watched in my family's home.

Robert Guillaume, Emmy-winning 'Soap' actor, dies at 89

Robert Guillaume, who rose from squalid beginnings in St. Louis slums to become a star in stage musicals and win Emmy Awards for his portrayal of the sharp-tongued butler in the TV sitcoms "Soap" and "Benson," has died at age 89.

Guillaume died at home Tuesday in Los Angeles, according to his widow, Donna Brown Guillaume. He had been battling prostate cancer, she told The Associated Press.

Among Guillaume's achievements was playing Nathan Detroit in the first all-black version of "Guys and Dolls," earning him a Tony nomination in 1977. He became the first African-American to sing the title role of "Phantom of the Opera," in a Los Angeles-based production, and was the voice of the shaman-slash-mandrill Rafiki in the film version of "The Lion King."

Guillaume won a Grammy in 1995 when a read-aloud version of "The Lion King," which he narrated, was cited for best spoken word album for children. He also served as narrator for the animated HBO series "Happily Ever After: Fairy Tales for Every Child," which aired form 1995-2000.

* * *

"The minute I saw the script, I knew I had a live one," he recalled in 2001. "Every role was written against type, especially Benson, who wasn't subservient to anyone. To me, Benson was the revenge for all those stereotyped guys who looked like Benson in the '40s and '50s (movies) and had to keep their mouths shut."

The character became so popular that ABC was persuaded to launch a spinoff, simply called "Benson," which lasted from 1979 to 1986. In the series, the main character went from running the kitchen for a governor to becoming a political aide to eventually becoming lieutenant governor. "Benson" made Guillaume wealthy and famous, but he regretted that his character's wit had to be toned down to make him more appealing as the lead star.

Display Graphic Glitch

I've noticed lately that, when my MBP (mid-2015) is idle with a dark screen, I tap the space bar to bring it alive and, momentarily the screen has a vivid "whirlpool" of colours and then my login screen comes up. No big deal, unless this is some sort of clue of upcoming graphic card troubles. That's all I notice. No glitches once I login. Should I be concerned?

Mac OS High Sierra instability

Late 2013 MBP, 8 Gig RAM, GT650 GPU. Auto log out is NOT set in the security settings.
I've read about this after some digging, but the discussion on Apple Support was about Sierra. I never had this problem even up to Sierra, but now in High Sierra I get suddenly logged out when I'm doing stuff with heavy GPU loading. Firefox and other apps open in the background, (probably with video ads running) and when I'm running Safari and playing with things like Youtube videos, the page stalls, spinning beachball, black screen and then a log in window. It's really irritating that Mac OS is becoming more unstable as it goes forward.

In addition Safari is getting worse and worse. It was useless in its early days, then it got better, and now it regularly freezes while loading a page full of sidebar ads and autoplay videos, like MacWorld, ironically enough.

address label template

HI All

This is very simple in the scheme of things.
I want to be able to print off some mailing labels - I have the actual labels but cannot figure out how to get the template to download with the proper breakdown

I have been trying to download from Avery - but what I get is a blank 'template'

Is that template just one of the little rectangles and it will populate the entire sheet when it goes to the printer?

Any Way To Stop New Video Pop-Up Thing?

For some time now while browsing the web in Safari I open a page to have a look at the story and my pointer just touches an on page video. That immediately triggers a new smaller window to open on top of the video and begin to auto play the video. It is most annoying as I want to read the story to determine if I even want to open the video.

Is there any way to stop this from happening? Regular Safari pop up blockers have no use on this problem.

Below is a screen shot of what I mean.

Audio book question

Recently, I?ve been trying to get my mom?s collection of audio book cd?s into a format that will play in her car, which doesn?t have a CD player. She has an iPhone 6 and a few USB sticks. I?m trying to keep this as simple as possible. The tracks on the CD are about 6 minutes in length, so that adds up to a lot of tracks on the average audio book box set( 9 cds). I?ve been doing it track-by-track , stitching ?em together, to make 1big file which has all the tracks. Needless to say this is a ton of work and a pain in the butt. So, I?ve been trying out audio book binder, which seems to work fine- I point it at the CD and let it go to work, and end up with an . m4b file, which I understand is the correct format for audiobooks. However, iTunes on my moms MacBook Pro won?t recognize the file I?ve created and it won?t play it, either from the Desktop or from a USB stick. .m4a and mp3?s And all the rest seem to work ok. I?ve tried it on my Mac Pro and it plays.i haven?t tried importing it into itunes or syncing up with my iPhone? it should be drag n? drop, methinks, but there?s probably some voodoo that I can?t do, maybe one of you can??-all I can seem to find on audiobooks in iTunes is something about books bought from the App Store, which this isn?t,and my mom won?t do. I think she?s running sierra, and the version of iTunes is 12, if that helps out
Thanks for any help

iOS 11.0.3 update

When I tried to update my iPhone 6 to iOS 11.0.3 I got an error message saying: Updating to iOS 11.0.3 requires at least 770 MB of free space on your iPhone. Please change your media sync options to make more storage available.

The graphic at the bottom of my iPhone summary in iTunes (12.7.0.166) indicates the phone has 5.29 GB of free space. So, why would I need to make more storage available? On top of that, I can't find any place to change my "media sync options" on either the iPhone 6 or iTunes 12.7.0.166 on my iMac (OS Sierra 10.12.6).

Also having major difficulties with something that used to be so simple: updating song lists on my iPhone. Used to be I would edit the playlist on my desktop, then drag/drop the updated list to my plugged-in iPhone. Now that doesn't work, either. I posted this problem on the other iOS board some time ago, but those suggestions didn't work.

Help!:(

AirDrop... drops...!

Hello,

I'm trying to transfer photos taken (and on) my iPhone 5s onto my MBA 11".

The AirDrop function works fine, then it doesn't... then it works fine, then it doesn't... I think you get the picture.

My MBA *always* sees my iPhone 5s. My iPhone 5s, *sometimes* sees my MBA.

I haven't found any logic to it, whatsoever.

Is this normal ? And, more important..., how to fix it ??

Thanks for any ideas or suggestions.

iMac - CD's eject very slowly or not at all

Cleaning house I found a G3 iMac.
It booted up fine and is running 10.4.3 - from what I gather 10.4.x is the latest OS it can run.

Problem is that CD's are ejected either very slowly or not at all.
Not all CD's but most.
The odd CD ejects fine with no problem and others don't eject at all until I try several times and then grab the edge of the CD and pull it out.

I wonder if there is any way to try to fix this without taking the whole iMac apart - maybe lubricate the drive somehow.
Or, since this iMac has been sitting idle for years, maybe more use will help.

I read on the net that a drive belt in the iMac stretches over time preventing the rollers that push the CD out from turning if there is too much resistance....but even if I take the iMac apart - it doesn't look as if there is a proper replacement for this belt if that in fact is the problem.

Anyone come across this problem and can suggest something to try/

I also have a similar problem with the drive on a 2011 MacBook Pro - there I have to tilt the Mac so gravity helps to get the disk out.

High Sierra and cloud compatibility issues

Just as a heads up Dropbox is having problems with running their service and iCloud in parallel under 10.13

A useful help page but I would expect this to improve over the coming weeks.

Meanwhile Canadian competitor Sync.com keep replying to my support requests that they are still 'evaluating and testing' 10.13. I would expect an app update soon.

In addition to supporting new file formats as well as other under the hood changes (which I don't claim to understand), there may be issues with a mixed environment of HDs and SSDs synching to the same account (APFS not deployed on all machines).

For these reasons, as the cloud is now critical to my business, I'll wait until the big guns have sorted themselves out.

Notes updating in iCloud very slow

Not sure what is up with a simple app (Apple Notes) and what I would think, is a simple Cloud Sync. I made folder changes and added notes (about 30) on my iPad Pro and it's taking forever for these changes to show up on my Mac and iPhone. I was going to switch over to Apple Notes from Mini Notes but this is ridiculous. It should be nearly instantaneous. I can see the Progress indicator working away but nothing is showing up. Background Refresh is enabled on both iPad and iPhone. Any ideas what is up?

E-Signature - trying to get my head around that

I'm part of a small organization that creates contracts every once in a while, say about five per week, that need to be initialled on every page and signed on the last page by the individual the contract is for (typically a different person for each contract) and also initialled and signed by up to four executives of the organization.

Contracts are either pdf or Word documents.

Until now we have either printed the contract, signed it, scanned it and sent it to the next executive (executives are in Canada, US, Austria and Australia) or, as one step up, embedded the signature in the pdf or Word document electronically.

Suggestion has been made to use an E-Signature in the future.

However when I look up E-signature options in google, I get everything from how to do this "free" on the Mac via Preview and a MacBook camera (essentially embedding the signatures the way we do now) to signing up to some service to the tune of $25 to $35 per user per month which ends up at $1200 or more per year for the four executives.

I assume those different options of "E-Signatures" are not identical.

Is anyone using E-Signatures and what would be the best and most economical way to go in our situation.

Why can't I delete old Backups?

I have 37 folders that I'd like to delete which are backups dating back to 2015!

The file name is: year-month-day-some random 6 digit number
ie. 2015-06-18-987123

When I try to Delete Immediately from my Trash, a window appears that says, "Finder wants to make changes. Type your password to allow this." I input my password, and then I get this message: "The operation can’t be completed because you don’t have permission to access some of the items."

How can I get rid of these old folders? I've backed up as recently as last night so I don't need them!

Replacement Charger for 2011 MacBook Pro

I need to buy another two or thee chargers for the various 2011 15-unch MacBook Pros I have in the family.

Initially I bought "genuine" Apple but those didn't last any longer than the after market types, thery were just more expernsive.

Now I'm debating if I should buy OEM or third party.

Came across this Canadian site that offers both - price difference is only afewdollars so OEM would be the way to go with them.

http://ift.tt/2yxHWH4

Trouble is I never heard of that company before and they give no actual address/location of their company which always makes me a bit suspicious

Other sites offer 3rd party chargers for only $C19,99 - I bought from them and they do work and last a reasonable amount of time.

Anyone order a MacBook Pro charger recently from a vendor they would recommend?

iTunes oddity

Some tunes that I've been listening to on my playlists for years have greyed-out on my iPhone6 (latest iOS update installed 11.0.2). There's a funny looking icon on those items as well. Yet they play fine on the playlists on my home computer. I've synced a couple of times, also tried dragging/dropping the list to the phone, no dice. Is this connected to the iOS update? Is there a fix?

Thanks.

2010 MBPro running High Sierra not booting even after one hour.

Late 2010 17" MBPro with 8 gigs RAM and 1TB HDD running MacOS High Sierra, all latest updates installed.

Suddenly this evening Safari started to beachball. So I tried to start Opera. That too beachballed.

So I did the cmd-option-esc to try and force quit. That window to show running apps beach balled! Finally after many many minutes it showed the apps and all of them including Finder were not responding.

So, I tried to relaunch Finder. That took a very long time. Force-quitting Safari and Opera took many minutes too; and then Finder just kept beach balling. So, I could not even click Apple|Shutdown.

So, I held the power button down and killed the Mac.

Then I powered it back on. I got the Apple logo with the progress bar below.

That progress bar has been slowly filling for the last hour (actually as of this writing it has been an hour and twenty minutes).

The progress bar is now full, but it has been that way for around twenty minutes now.

I live in India, there are no Apple stores here or Genuis bars. There are third party authorised repair centres to whom I can take the laptop and get it dignosed, but it's now Saturday night and the earliest i can go is Monday.

So, any pointers on what else I can try? In order to run disk utility or Onyx or anything I first have to get the machine booted, so that's out of the question for now.

I can try resetting the PRAM and SMC, but I am worried that if that does not work, I again have to wait maybe 90 minutes or longer for the machine to start up again.

Any ideas please?

Thanks and cheers

EDITED TO ADD: I got sick of waiting, powered down the machine, did the SMC reset and the PRAM/NVRAM reset. No help. Still stuck at the progress bar and now I have to wait at least 90 minutes (if not longer) to see if it ever boots and then see if I can run Disk Utility or Etrecheck. Thanks

Quebec drivers and All Weather Tires.

Hello all, I am in the process of buying new tires for my car and have been looking at All Weather as an alternative to summer and snows. I don’t have storage for an extra set, plus the hassle of the transport and install. I have narrowed it down to two brands, the Hankook Optimo 4s and the Nokian WR G3. I have read that both are good and that the Hankook is allowed in Quebec for winter driving

I am leaning toward the Nokian as they seem to have better CR ratings, but not so sure if they are allowed in Quebec. Any thoughts on which to buy and, do you know if the Nokian’s are allowed for winter driving in Quebec. Thanks. rp

Is my HD a doorstop?

This afternoon I removed a USB HD without ejecting. In the past you would have been crucified for this but I can't remember the last time I ejected a thumb drive...

So, the HD, a Seagate with Goflex adapter, will no longer mount. It does power up/spin and the control lights are flashing slowly but it is not seen by the system. I have tried 3 separate Goflex enclosures: 2 USB and one Lightning. Nada. I have also swapped cables and USB ports.

To be specific, the HD is not seen by Finder, Disk Utility or Terminal.

Anything else I could try?

High Sierra Question

Dear fellow ehMacian's: Maybe you can help me. I've been trying to install High Sierra on my Mac Pro (MacPro 5,1, which I think is from 2010-2011 so it's compatible with High Sierra, I believe). I've had a bear of a time trying to get this to install. I've tried the usual: zapping pram, resetting SMC/PMU, Ejecting hard drive #2, trying to start up in Single User Mode. I've also run Disk Utility on both hard drives and it's found no problems at all. I've checked the firmware and the Boot rom versions and both are current as can be. As far as I know, High Sierra checks to make sure you have the correct firmware before installing and you can't get around that. So, I've done what it told me to do from the High Sierra installer. Clicked on the Shut Down button....waited for it to shut down then held down the power button until I see the blinking power light and the long tone, then released the power button....and....
nothing.....absolutely nothing but a blank screen....I hear a little hard drive noise which indicates to me that something's going on...but as to what i can't say....
I've tried time and time again to get this darn thing to install with no luck. I don't get it....
it's not like I need to install it, my Mac Pro works fine as is, but...it would be nice to have that choice..... I'd rant and rave at Apple, but why bother? won't do me a lot of good...but seriiously?...Guess I'm going to have to wait for a bug fix for this OS install, which is the 1st time I've ever said that....
well? any insight appreciated
thanks

Just a heads up WARNING for those who like to use the Mac's Enabling encryption option:

macOS High Sierra — Drive Encryption Can Change Formatting

Quote:

macOS High Sierra continues to support full disk encryption, but Mike Bombich, who created Carbon Copy Cloner, has verified a bug in High Sierra that will cause an external drive to have its format changed from HFS+ to APFS when the drive is encrypted in High Sierra.

Though his current condition is unknown, he was found in critical condition.

Using Daylite for Kanban boards

OK, this may be a bit of a specialist query but...

We want to start using Kanban boards for our projects (and our business in general). The default software is Trello.

We don't want to increase the number of platforms (too many already) and so will stick to Daylite to achieve that.

At present I'm thinking of creating task categories and running a custom report. Any other ideas?

Thanks!

François

You gotta love Cape Breton....

A guy named Terry has set off a firestorm in Sydney, Cape Breton. Warning: very foul language ahead, but it's too damn funny not to share.

Posted in "Meanwhile in Cape Breton" (Facebook)

Followed by dozens of folks posting their own hilarious contributions to the story (you seriously have to read them), like this one:

Then somebody went and set up a GoFundMe page so Terry can buy another 2-4 (up to $370 as of 1120am Monday). :D

To which Terry replied, via the Group Admin:

****ATTENTION****

We've received a message from the one, the only "Ronnie Two-four Talbot" in response to the go-fund me page posted below! This shows Ronnie's true Cape Breton colours. He's the real hero!

"Jesus Mary and Joseph I'm glad you ****ers are as upset about my 24 as I am. Glad to see all of the support about Terry being a huge prick. There's even one of those comefundme pages.

@DavidJones please donate every cent raised to Boys & Girls Clubs of Cape Breton - Whitney Pier Youth Club (WPYC).

We don't want any more kids in the pier growing up like Terry did and stealing people's 24's!!!! Donate away guys and keep the young fellas hands out of the pickup trucks of all hard working Cape Bretoners. "
And thus, a Cape Breton literary epic was born... on Facebook.

:lmao:

EDIT: Looks like I saw the headline a week ago, but didn't follow through to read the story. This happened a week ago.

New Firefox Quantum

I downloaded the new Firefox Quantum. Like all new Firefox iterations it seems snappy enough. Was disappointed, however, to see that all new tabs open with a screen featuring recent pages visited and rows of clickbait.

I actually don't want Firefox to record my browsing history and the adware is an unhappy development. Worse, there are no user controls to create a blank tab. Had to download a third-party extension "New Tab Override" to return it to a simple home page.

Las Vegas massacre

'Beyond horrific': Shooting on Las Vegas Strip kills at least 50, wounds hundreds

A Nevada sheriff says the death toll has climbed to at least 50 in the attack on a Las Vegas concert Sunday, making it the deadliest shooting in modern U.S. history.

Clark County Sheriff Joseph Lombardo says more than 200 people were wounded at the Route 91 Harvest Music Festival in an outdoor area known as Las Vegas Village, across the strip from the Mandalay Bay and the Luxor hotels.

The death toll surpassed the 49 from the Orlando nightclub shooting that also left dozens wounded in June 2016, when the 29-year-old gunman was shot and killed by police.

Authorities have identified the person believed to be the gunman in Sunday night's shooting as Stephen Paddock, 64.

Lombardo says officers confronted Paddock on the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay Hotel and Casino across the street from the concert.

It's believed he checked in as a hotel guest. He's now dead but how he died is not immediately clear.

Authorities say they have also located 62-year-old Marilou Danley, who was wanted as a person of interest in the shooting.

What we know about Stephen Paddock, the suspected gunman killed in standoff
Authorities are still looking into Paddock’s background and history, according to Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD) Sheriff Joseph Lombardo. Lombardo said the police department had located a number of firearms in the room that he occupied in the hotel.

Officers will also be carrying out a search of Paddock’s home. Police said Paddock checked into the hotel as a guest.

He was not believed to be connected to any militant group, Lombardo said. Police have not called the shooting a terrorist attack.

“We have no idea what his belief system was,” Lombardo said. “Right now, we believe he was the sole aggressor and the scene is static.””

Terror Attacks In Downtown Edmonton

Welcome the terrorists to Canada folks. It has begun here now. Same type as seen in Europe and Britain, police stabbing and rented van mowing down people, complete with carrying an ISIS flag. Good work Trudeau.

The suspect is now in custody.

Police are urging Edmontonians to be vigilant and aware of their surroundings.
