What Will You Do On New Years Eve?

I sense that NYE celebrations are changing over the years, just as my family's have.

When I was a kid in the 1950s New Years eve was an exciting night. Family always came over to our house, Mom's two single brothers, her mom and my dad's dad. We played cards and board games and went outside at midnight where neighbours gathered in the street to set off small firecrackers like pin wheels and sparklers you could hold in your hand and strings of firecrackers. The biggest display of all would come from the two Chinese families, one who ran a laundry at one end of the street and the other who owned the confectionary at the other end. Then it would be back inside for hot chocolate for us and rum toddies for the adults at which point we kids were shooed off to bed.

Then as I got married and began my own family, we would show up at my parents home to joint the festivities. We moved to a new city two years later and fell into the trap of the standard NYE everywhere it seemed in the 70s and 80s. Get a baby sitter and go out for a special meal and a dance at a local hotel or hall.

That nonsense ended in the 90s when we stopped going out and took the kid to the fireworks at midnight that had by then become a fixture in every place we lived. The kids were always excited to 'get to stay up til midnight' to watch the show and noise.

Then things changed again about 10 years ago when every city and town stopped the midnight fireworks shows as a new generation deemed it too late for kids to be up at midnight and now they set them off at 8:30 here and 9:00 in Edmonton. A big disappointment for the grandkids who are deprived of ushering in the new year.

It will once again be a quiet time tonight here. My wife, two sons and grandson will attend the Oilers NHL game at Rogers Place tonight courtesy of our daughter who made the tickets a Christmas gift to the four of them. The game begins at 5:00 so they can catch the fireworks downtown at 9:00 pm. I am not a hockey fan at all, so this does not bother me.

Me? I will be home alone with the dog having a couple of eggnogs while I watch TV celebrations in other parts of the world and likely in bed and asleep by 9:00 or so.

Apple’s Lisa Operating System To Be Released For Free As Open Source In 2018

More than three decades ago, Apple unveiled the Apple Lisa. It turned out to be one of the biggest flops of Apple, selling only 10,000 units; Apple spent a mammoth $150 million on R&D. Lisa, one of the first commercial computers with a GUI, also set the stage for a conflict between CEO John Sculley and Cofounder Steve Jobs. For those who don’t know, LISA stood for Local Integrated System Architecture.

This doesn’t mean that Lisa’s pioneering operating system is completely dead. Soon, in 2018, the Computer History Museum will be open sourcing the code of the Apple Lisa operating system, and you’d be able to download it for free, according to Business Insider.

How to mass erase all iPad Air 2 emails

I have over 9000 emails on my iPad Air 2. I do not want to erase one at a time. I can not find a method of erasing all at the same time

At the bottom of the screen all I see is [Mark All] highlighted (which I have done) but the [Move] and [Trash] are not. They do not come on when all the emails have been Marked All.

Is there a method that I have not come across yet?

iPhone battery replacement

Knowing now that a new battery could breath some extra umphh into my iPhone 6, I’m considering either sending it off to Apple or trying the job myself. Can anyone chime in here on either? What’s the turnaround time if Apple does it? And, with iFixit videos, how difficult is it really to do it yourself? I really can’t be without the iPhone more than a few days and that almost eliminates sending it off to Apple.

Or, should I wait for the possible benefit from a class action lawsuit (ha!)?

Pertaining to Clean Install

Am now migrating apps and files over to my new Clean Install on my MBP. Been wanting to do this before Christmas.
I find it strange, after erasing my drive, that, when opening Mail preferences, all my Gmail accounts were already there except not activated. How is that? When activating them, I simply entered the passwords and the Mailboxes started to populate.

Asus MX27U - 4K display - got it

So as I mentioned earlier i have gone through 5 displays looking for one that will work with my MB Pro touch bar USBc
I think apple screwed things royally on this interface but that is another topic.
for now I finally got my new display - I am enjoying it so far..

1 Cord!!! USB C - drives and charges the laptop then i have the back of the display going USB A to my USB3 hub.. but i had to down Hz the display to 30 instead of 60 to get it 4K and USB3.. but who cares.. it works and well..

only negative - sound is manually controlled by either the buttons on the display or via software in youtube or other various players. - whatever.. i can live with that.

i did purchase a logitech webcam c 920 pro - they work well together. but note : if your sound / voices sound like chimpmunks - go to utilities and audio midi - select the camera and change it from 16000 to 32000 hz for sound in put lol

Running OS X - 2 versions (?)

Hi

I have an issue where I would like to upload the latest version of Mac OS on my iMac but if I do that I'll pretty well make my Adobe CS5 programs useless. Right now with El Capitan I can still use my CS5 programs but there are issues I've had to work through.

This is what I'm thinking; if I can partition my drive and run the latest OS X for my cloud based software ie: MS Office/PS CC/LR CC and then when I need to revert back to my CS5 ver of DW and Indesign I use the other partition. Yes I could also subscribe to the full CC version of Adobe products but I only use this product for personal use and I'm trying to limit my financial exposure right now.

Does this even make sense?

High Sierra And iPhone Tethering

Ever since my upgrade to High Sierra, I cannot tether my iPhone 8 Plus in the normal way to my MBP retina 15" mid 2015, 2.8 Ghz i7 with 16 GB RAM 1 TB SSD.

I used to simply turn on Personal Hotspot, then select it in my WIFI menu on the desktop and it connected without issue.

Now it will not connect that way at all. Instead I have to go to System Preferences, open Network, then select the iPhone from the Network Name list to connect.

This morning I could not even find the iPhone in the Network Name list, It clearly showed the iPhone in the desktop WIFI menu list, but nothing via Network. A reset of both the iPhone and the MBP made no difference. I finally got it to connect by turning off WIFI in Network Preferences, then back on and it suddenly appeared.

I cannot believe Apple has made such a change to make it so much more inconvenient to connect with personal hotspot.

Anyone else experiencing this issue, or is it just something I have done to cause the issue that I am missing?

It seems like forever ago that Apple first teased the iMac Pro, the souped up, professional grade version of its all-in-one. Announced back at WWDC, the company promised the computer would arrive sometime in December, and in spite a few months of near radio silence on that front, it looks like it’s about to deliver.

The dark gray desktop will be available in a matter of days, on December 14, bringing with it some pretty nutty internal specs and a price tag to match. The iMac Pro starts at $4,999 and includes up to an 18-core Xeon processor, 128GB of memory and 4TB of storage. This is pretty a serious piece of machinery in a form factor that was once consider a bit of an at-home computer starter kit.

2011 13" Macbook Air Part Wanted, Model A1369

I need the flange that attaches to the bottom of the screen with double sided tape. It is approximately 12" X 1/2" with 5 small screw holes. I accidently sent my faulty screen for an under warranty replacement along with the flange. This flange is not visable once the screen bezel is installed. I have no hope of obtaining my flange from the screen supplier.
It probably ended up in a dumpster.

If anyone knows where I could get this piece please let me know or if you have one you are willing to sell please contact me. I will be very grateful.

network help

Having some interference issues with a wireless speaker kit I bought (amphony 1700). It runs at 2.4ghz. I am in a new house and have setup a new network to extend through the walls and such as it is larger then my last place. Using 2 airport express to extend the network and 1 airport basestation plugged directly into my rogers modem.

I did see in the airport wireless settings there was an option for channels under the 2.4ghz. If I select a specific channel do I need to change anything on the devices that connect to the wifi or is that all automatic? Hoping I can find a channel that does not get the interference from the wireless speaker kit. When it is on my 100mb connection drops to 1mb or less. The other option would be going only 5ghz, but heard that is not so good for passing through walls and such.

What's going on with Skype?

I have two Macs with Skype, a Mini and a MacBook pro
Both running the same OS, El Capitan

But on the two Macs the Skype windows look totally different.

On the Mini it shows as version 7.52 which supposedly is the latest one,
On the Macbook pro it shows 8.12.0.2 wwhich also shows as the latest one

And,,,,,,all the contacts are gone on the 8.12 version - can I recover those somewhere?

Finder Issues

Been noticing lately that, when renaming files with A Better Finder Rename, the Finder takes a while to refresh. Yes, maybe it's something to do with the app (?) but now, today, when copying and pasting a file, it's not showing at the new location until I do a Find and choose "show in enclosing folder" and then it appears. Also, when trying to rename a Powerpoint file, I get this: "An unexpected error occurred (error code -8072)." I was thinking it's about time to do a "nuke and pave" anyways, but what might the issues be with the Finder? All else seems to be running fine.

Jony Ive is retaking control of Apple’s design team after two years in hands-off role

Jony Ive, technically Apple’s design chief since 2015, is once again assuming management control of the iPhone maker’s design team after two years in a largely hands-off role, according to a report from Bloomberg. Ive, responsible for the look and feel of Apple hardware throughout a majority of former CEO Steve Jobs’ revolutionary second run at the helm of the company in the late ‘90s and 2000s, was freed from much of his day-to-day management responsibilities in 2015, when he took on the chief design officer title. He still oversaw design, but other executives and employees on the team no longer reported to him.

At the time, the move was viewed as Ive, who is 50 years old, laying the groundwork to retire from his intensive position at Apple. However, it now appears that Ive is retaking control. Apple’s leadership webpage no longer lists Alan Dye, the vice president of user interface design, or Richard Howarth, vice president of industrial design, according to 9to5Mac. Both Dye and Howarth took on Ive’s management responsibilities when he stepped back two years ago.

“With the completion of Apple Park, Apple’s design leaders and teams are again reporting directly to Jony Ive, who remains focused purely on design," Apple told Bloomberg in a statement. So it appears Apple is claiming its newly opened spaceship campus as the culprit for Ive’s less product-focused time at the company these last two years.

10.13.2 update bricked my 2010 MBPro

2010 MacBook Pro 17".

I clicked on the 10.13.2 update. I let the machine alone for the next half an hour without observing what was going on.

When I came back I found that it had restarted, and had a Grey screen with the "Prohibited" symbol on the screen - a circle with a backslash running through it.

Restarting in Safe mode did noting, it came back to the same screen.

SMC and PRAM reset too did not help - came back to the same screen.

Now, I have a High Sierra Installer USB key and I am trying to boot from that. My plan is to see if I can do a disk repair from that and check if that helps; otherwise I shall next try reinstalling the OS from that USB.

Waiting for it to boot from the USB..................................

Disk Utility showed no errors of any kind. Now trying to start again from the internal hard drive.........................

Still waiting............................ (Interestingly, when I changed Startup Drive from Disk Utility, it showed the internal drive as 10.13.2, meaning, the OS has already been updated.

Still waiting...................................

HA, OK, booted and showed the login screen!

I wonder what the problem was and why this happened! Any thoughts?

Also, I read while googling for help that some people had this problem recur while rebooting later; I need to see if this happens to me too. Until then, ciao!

Windows on my MB Pro?

Below is from the abebook.ca website. The book selling inventory (HomeBase) software is windows based only. I will need to purchase and install Win 10 on my new MB Pro/SSD 256 What are the pros and cons? Will installing Win10 do any harm? I'm just nervous about this and should I go ahead with this what degree of HD do I assign to Windows? I don't understand the answer below; intel-based Mac, virtual PC.

A: HomeBase 3.0 is compatible with Windows computers only. Mac users who have virtual PC installed or who are using a newer intel-based Mac with Windows installed should be able to use HomeBase 3.0.

combo updaters?

Not sure if I heard correctly earlier this year, but is Apple no longer posting standalone combo updaters? With MacOS 10.13.2 released today, I'm assuming there will only be the Delta updater.

It's supposed to be here but I don't see it. I don't even see the regular 10.13.2 updater. Apple always seems to be late in posting updates here.

Unknown PC on network

does anyone knows how to get rid of these unknown PC on my network? i have no PC running on my network as i have only my mac mini "wired connection" my mac pro "wired connection" and my macbook wireless running on a Shaw router :confused:
