syncing SMS texts and Messages between Mac and Devices

Somehow, when either doing a clean install on my Mac or syncing a new iPhone, I've lost good syncing between my Mac and iPhone. The iPad seems okay. I have set it up correctly with Text Message Forwarding enabled in Settings-Messages. Any suggestions?

Refurbished iPhone 8?

Anyone see any listed on the Apple Store yet? I’m wanting to upgrade from my iPhone 6. The 7s apparently is close to the 8, but I’d like to get the greatest and latest. Or is the 8 not the greatest? The X OS not for me.

Apple reinstates the missing Easter and Passover in their Calendars

For those who might have found them missing in their Calendars, you should get back Easter and Passover with the latest updates.

https://aleteia.org/2018/02/21/easte...ns-asking-why/

https://www.snopes.com/apple-easter-calendar-iphone/
Quote:

Apple added Easter holidays to the default “U.S. calendar” on various versions of iOS and MacOS. As of 24 February 2018, the calendar app listed Good Friday and Easter Sunday, as well as the Jewish holiday of Passover
I guess a few will be relieved that Apple hadn't completely eliminated them!!!

It seems reminiscent of this "And you had one job to do…" themes…

The Tale Of My iPhone 8 Plus Issue

I bought a brand new unlocked iPhone 8 Plus back in October from Telus and have really enjoyed the extra real estate. It makes my tired old eyes much easier to cope with than the iPhone 6S I gave to my son, that I was using.

While I loved the form factor, the phone had some behaviours that were annoying to say the least.

About a month after getting the phone, it began to turn off unexpectedly while using it, without warning. It always started up again with a push of the power button but I sensed something was not quite right. I took it back to the Telus store and they told me I would have to take it back to Apple for diagnosis. I then restored the phone myself using iTunes

It seemed to work fine for a couple of months and I thought I had the issue beat, but once again it began to behave weird, this time by 'freezing', showing a white screen with the black Apple logo and becoming totally unresponsive. Now it would have to be plugged into my MBP and connected to iTunes and be restored to operate properly again.

In early January, I talked with Apple on the phone and they told me to take it in to have diagnostics run on it. A call to the west end Apple store left me with no appointment available for a week due to the holidays, so I took it to West World, an authorized Apple dealer I have dealt with occasionally since the 90s.

The owner himself greeted me, remembering me from back then. He immediately ran the diagnostic test Apple requested on the phone, which at the time had once again frozen and displayed the white screen with the black Apple logo.

The phone tested fine and he declared it to be a software issue and reinstalled the current iOS of the time. He told me he normally charged $35 for this but since I was an old friend, he was doing this at no charge.

Less than a week later, the same thing happened and it froze again with the same screen showing. This time the Southgate Apple store had an immediate appointment available with the Genius bar and I hopped in the car for the 20 km drive.

By the time I arrived the battery had gone from 100% to 50% in just two hours and it was very warm to the touch.

Once again the genius hooked up the phone to his computer and ran diagnostics and declared the phone fine. Not a hardware issue, he said and reinstalled the software. Again.

Then last Monday, it froze again and I got it restarted using iTunes. Tuesday it froze again and I phoned Apple who walked me through a forced shutdown and software reinstall. The tech I talked to, told me he had made me an appointment at the West Edmonton Apple store for Friday and that he had sent them an email to inspect the phone.

I arrived at the store at 11:00 a.m. and five minutes later an Apple guy dropped by and told me he was 'like a nurse seeing me before the doctor' and asked me to tell him what was going on with my phone.

I gave the guy a Reader's Digest version of the above and he picked up my phone, turned it on, handed it back to me and asked me to enter my passcode. I did and handed it back to him. He poked at the phone a few times and said, it's a hardware failure, we will replace the phone right now and told me an Apple Rep would be along soon to guide me through the process.

That happened and the phone has been working fine for a full week now.

I wondered at the time how anyone could tell it was a hardware issue so quickly and asked the first guy if he would mind explaining how he diagnosed the issue so fast. Sure, he said and showed me what he did.

He opened Settings>Privacy>Analytics>Analytics Data and scrolled down to the Monday/Tuesday freezes date I had told him about and found an entry that noted Panic Attacks on those two occasions. He told me that confirmed my story and told him the phone had a hardware issue. But, but I said, how come the two former diagnostics run by the Apple authorized store and the other Apple store Genius bar had shown the phone to be fine?

Oh that, he said and then, watch this, as he hooked the phone up to his diagnostics software and ran it through. It came up saying the phone was OK and it passed the test. See he said, some hardware failures can't be picked up by the test, but from experience I knew it was possible there was an issue when I saw those two Panic Attacks.

I posted this in case anyone else has had similar issues and would be helped by knowing how you can check for yourself and eliminate the whole lot of grief I went through, to get to the bottom of the issue. Apparently a Panic Attack indicates a hardware issue. Who knew?

How to transfer iWeb to new hard drive?

Hi all,

I am running El Capitan, 10.11.6,

I recently had my main SSD drive replaced. The old one is still on my system, labelled 'old sad'

The new one is where everything is running off of.

Under my old ssd, I had a couple of web sites created with iweb. Naturally when I load up iWeb under my new ssd, it opens with nothing under it.

Anyone know how I can transfer my old iWeb info to my new iWeb app?

APFS and Time Machine: CAUTION

Don't convert your Time Machine volume from HFS+ to APFS
Time Machine can work with APFS volumes, but the shape looks like this:
  • Time Machine can archive files from both HFS+ and APFS volumes.
  • Time Machine volumes must be HFS+.
  • You can use Disk Utility to upgrade a Time Machine HFS+ volume to APFS without a warning. You’d think Disk Utility would detect the Time Machine backup and stop you, but it doesn’t.
  • Once upgraded to APFS, the Time Machine backup archive is mostly useless, even though files aren’t destroyed.
The archive becomes useless, because APFS doesn’t support hard links. These are a special kind of alias. A soft link is a pointer to a destination file that looks to the operating system like a pointer. A hard link looks to the operating system like an actual file, even though it’s just a pointer. This allows a single copy of a file to be in a filesystem, but have many pointers that reference it, and they can be manipulated and copied as if they exist in multiple places.

Apple Planning To Make Airpods Wireless Headphones Water Resistant

Apple planning to make AirPods wireless headphones water resistant, improve Siri integration

Apple is working on a new AirPods version for release as soon as this year with an upgraded wireless chip, among other new features, sources say

Quote:

Apple Inc., seeking to bolster its wearables business, is working on upgrades to its wireless AirPods headphones, according to people familiar with the matter.

Like with its mobile devices — the iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch — Apple intends to frequently update the AirPods with new hardware features. The Cupertino, California-based technology giant is working on a new version for release as soon as this year with an upgraded wireless chip, the people said. A subsequent model for as early as next year is planned to be water resistant, they added, asking not to be identified discussing private product plans.

The model coming as early as this year will let people summon Apple’s Siri digital assistant without physically tapping the headphones by saying “Hey Siri.” The function will work similarly to how a user activates Siri on an iPhone or a HomePod speaker hands-free. The headphones, internally known as B288, will include an upgraded Apple-designed wireless chip for managing Bluetooth connections. The first AirPods include a chip known as the W1, and Apple released the W2 with the Apple Watch last year.

Can't get Canon printer/scanner to work with new MacBook Pro, any suggestions?

I purchased a new MacBook Pro three weeks ago. I've been trying to install apps and files to get it to work like my old one that won't boot anymore (a lot of frustration). I came to a sticking point with my Canon MG5220 and MX320 printer/scanners, as no driver I downloaded would get them recognized (or show an icon). Finally I called Canon Support and was told that Mac OS 10.13 isn't compatible with Canon printers and they're working on the issue. Since I can't use either Canon product to scan/digitize, would anyone have any suggestions of other companies' printer/scanners or just scanners that are good for high use and work well with Mac OS 10.13?

Thanks in advance.

R.I.P. Howard McCurdy, 2nd Black MP in Canada; Order of Canada;

Windsor MP and activist Howard McCurdy remembered as a man who 'didn't back down'

Howard McCurdy is being remembered as a man who never backed down from anything.

The civil rights activist was the second black member of Parliament in Canada — the first for the New Democratic Party — and the first tenured black professor in Canadian history. McCurdy died Tuesday at the age of 85.

* * *

McCurdy was also a scientist and civil rights activist. He also formed the Guardian Club to fight racial discrimination in Windsor and co-founded and chaired the National Black Coalition of Canada.

Exterior display on mirror mode

For the last 6 years or so, I have had my Macbook pro (mid 2009) hooked up to an external monitor - on mirror mode. Until a month ago, all has worked well. Last month, when someone dusted my desk, the external monitor stopped working. But with a few wiggles, turn on and off, reboot etc etc - it went back to being AOK.

However, this week, maybe something got moved, it stopped working again. Now, no matter how many times we try to get it to start back up - we have been unsuccessful. In fact, there is nothing showing on the computer that one could construe as an external monitor.

DH seems to think it might be the video card is not working properly. Any thoughts?

Thank you

Macbook Pro (15" - mid 2007 - 2.2 - 2G - 120G) going crazy...!!!

Hello,

I recently bought this Macbook pro:

https://everymac.com/systems/apple/m...osa-specs.html

I've erased the hd twice with Disk Utility and installed a fresh copy of OS 10.11.6.

After using the computer for a few minutes, browsing on the Internet, the screen starts flashing. The image I'm seeing (whatever web site I'm visiting) is still there, I can move the mouse, but can't click on anything and the computer is basically frozen. I've even experienced it so I could see the "Activity monitor" CPU process screen under the Safari screen, but it seems to be frozen as well. Nothing on the Activity monitor changes, once the screen starts flashing.

If I don't do a force restart, the computer itself does one after about 3 to 4 minutes (haven't timed it).

I do get the lengthy "panic report" message from the OS. I'll copy paste it here, hopping someone can help and get a few clues as to what is happening...???

Thanks for any suggestions or help.

Marc P.

Firefox quantum issues on my mac

Hi,

I just got upgraded and now a couple of odd things I'm not happy about that I am hoping someone has a work around for.

1. Toolbar colour KEEPS changing. Even with a theme selected, the colours just keeps switching. All the tabs are light that are not engaged but the tab I'm on will switch colours. I have had everyone thing from the brown (when I started this note) to the blue it just switched to, to red, fluorescent green, orange, purple....etc. Usually it's a dark colour and that makes it had to read my bookmarks.

2. bookmarks.... does multi-row exist anywhere anymore? :-(

Any ideas?

Are you having similar issues?

I've tried going into the settings but it doesn't stay fixed.

Thanks

Major explosion in Mississauga

Three injured, dozens evacuated after explosion at Mississauga strip mall
Police have shut down Hurontario St. from Dundas St. to Hillcrest Ave. in both directions, and are asking nearby residents to keep their windows closed; Five people were assessed for injuries and three, including a child, were taken to hospital.

Update (Feb. 11, 3:30 p.m.) Five people — including a child — were assessed for injuries and dozens have been displaced after a building exploded, rocking the streets of Mississauga Sunday morning.

Emergency crews rushed to a strip plaza connected to a residential building in the Dundas St. West and Hurontario St. area just before 7:30 a.m. The building that exploded is located right next to Thomas L. Kennedy Secondary School.

Firefighters continued to fight the blaze into Sunday afternoon and clouds of thick smoke hid the full extent of the damage.

Mississauga’s fire chief Tim Beckett told media on scene that half the plaza had collapsed and there was structural damage to apartment buildings nearby. Police initially said that the strip plaza contained only commercial businesses that had been affected by the blast, but they soon discovered that an apartment building was attached in the back of the plaza.

* * *

Beckett said Mississauga’s fire marshal is waiting to get to the centre of the fire.
“We have a live natural gas line that is burning and we’re working with Enbridge now to get that gas line shut down. The investigation itself won’t start until some time tomorrow so it’s going to be quite some time.”

Fire services say that a search and rescue team is at the site of the explosion but, because they still can’t safely access the building, they can’t yet say whether anyone else has been injured.

Neighbours described an “earthquake” early this morning, and across the street, panes of glass were blown out of the windows of a clinic, and a health food store.

“Someone was saying a car jumped,” one man said as he surveyed the scene, emergency lights flashing amid the opaque clouds of grey smoke.

Anyone know anything new about the Apple HomePod release??

As the subject says, does anyone know anything new about the revised release date of the Apple HomePod that was supposedly going to be released Feb 9, 2018 in Canada.

No local Apple dealers know and I couldn't find any updated info on the 'net.

Just wondering…what the delay or whatever is happening…???

Streaming home tv from out of country

I am frequently out of country and want to watch my home team sports. Leafs, Raptors, Jays. My current TV providers (Rogers and Shaw) allow live streaming on devices, but only within Canada. Is there a way to get around that when I am in another country?

What Say You??

Of course nowhere near the comprehensive presentation the jurors saw. The big question for me is if this had been a group of local high school kids would the verdict have been the same?

I live close enough to a reserve that I encounter Indians at least weekly. Jekyl and Hyde comes to mind when describing those encounters. Sober they tend to be extremely courteous and the very opposite of threatening. Drunk they can be aggressive and very intimidating. I am sure most of the members of the jury have similar observations. While the article glosses over it, those Indians were drunk, they were also causing damage, and were seemingly intent on stealing a vehicle. One of them was also armed. I would have asked myself the question posed above but would probably have voted not-guilty.

August Smart Lock

I guess this would be the closest most appropriate forum...

Anyone using an August Smart Lock Pro? (home kit enabled second generation)?

Been toying around with the idea of picking one up but not sure.
Pro's/Con's/annoyances/etc

Dabbling more in the centralized SmartHome stuff (with Homekit).

I've been using various timers, remote outlet switches (WiFi and/or RF) ones for years but consolidating into the Homekit and expanding my the ecosystem.

As for Homekit as a whole, switches are working fine, using an iPad as a hub which is working fine for Automations.

Disable Auto Save

Haven't noticed this at all yet with High Sierra until now. When opening a Pixelmator image and making some changes, closing the window didn't ask if I wanted to save the changes. So far, the Auto Saving is only happening with Pixelmator and no other files. I can't find anywhere in Preferences to shut this feature off. Any ideas? I did a search but only found posts from 2012-13. There are no options in Pixelmator preferences to turn this feature on or off.

Found it. Prefs-General-Ask to keep changes.... Silly me.

Portable USB Monitor

i've become so accustom to my 2nd monitor (ultra wide) that I find it tough to work w/o one now. I have a 13" Retina MBP. I've been using why iPad 4 (yes, antiquity) with Duet, but I'm just totally over all the lag.

So I had poked around sometime back at some USB monitors, and I'm just wondering if anyone here owns one?? I've seen that many don't natively support macOS, but there's a driver out there that seems to be doing the job w/ a few models.

I recall this thread, but not been updated.

Portable Monitor for MacBook Air

Anyone here currently using one?

Thanks!

Beta Program

Just wondering how many here are signed up as Beta Testers and actually run MacOS, iOS and tvOS on their Macs and devices. Has anyone ran into any major glitches? Do you usually wait for the 2nd or 3rd Beta before installing?

How do get out of the "mirror" mode on OS 10.6?

I hooked up a Mac running 10.6 to an external display.
Worked fine

Then I decided to activate the display mirror mode asnd both displays became totally distorted - just a bunch of lines.
When I disconnect the external display everything is fine again but as soon as I connect the external display I'm back with the distorted screens
Rebooting the Mac doesn't help.
I want to get out of the 'mirror' mode back to the normal display for the Mac and external display.
Normally one would do that by just deselecting the mirror option but brcause the display gets all wonky in the mirror mode, that option is not available.
And if the external is not plugged in, the mirror option doesn't show.

Any ideas what to do ?????

PS: I vaguely remember I had a problem like that many years ago - but I can't really remember how I fixed that.

What mouse

I still have a first gen Intel Mac Pro 2006. Still works fine at least it did until I dropped the stock wireless mouse. I picked up a Magic Mouse and discovered it won't work with my old Mac.
Question, what mouse will work with this model? I don't care if it's wireless or not.

Thanks Andy.
