Mail after TM restore "import failed"..

Hi guys, I've put a new HD into my MBP and restored from TM backup. All good but when I try opening the Mail app I get "Import Failed, An Error occurred during import. Make sure you have available space in your home folder and try again."
What in the heck? Has anyone encountered this?
Thank you!

Uploaded images don't work

Any uploaded image will not show and can not be accessed lately.

I'm guessing the problem started when the security was increased.

Any chance it might get fixed some day reasonably soon???

Thanks,

Apple watch display steps instead of calories?

I have the Apple Watch 3. One thing I do not like is that for the rings it displays calories burned based on movement. I would like the ring to display steps to know how close I am to that goal. Google searching did not bring up any answers. Is this really not an option? The one thing I like about the fitbit was the step counter and a goal to easily set for how many steps a day you want to take. If this is not here it seems like a real misstep from Apple as this is way easier to try and achieve then a calorie burn wheel.

Stupid Windows & Mac-formatted Fat32 USB drive

Hey folks,

This has only begun happening in the last few months.

We have a variety of USB flash drives. Formatted as Fat32 (new out of the package, we reformat to get rid of the PC encryption .exe crap). Done this a million times over the decades.

Problem: Windows - at least the three different machines we've tried this one - refuse to recognize the sticks. Upon inserting the drive, Windows will only offer the option to Format the drive or Ignore it.

I've searched Apple Discussions and the web in general, but the terms are far too generic to bring up anything relevant (90% of the results are how to format a USB stick to use with both Mac & Windows, nothing about troubleshooting).

Anyone else run into this?

Apple Is Ordering So Many Shows, With Nowhere To Show Them

It’s hard to get excited for Apple’s upcoming shows without knowing how we’ll get to watch

Quote:

Yesterday, Apple ordered its first international series, Calls, adapted from a French series by the same name. It’s the latest addition to its growing pile of projects; currently the count sits at 21. The company is reportedly placing a big bet on original content, spending upwards of $1 billion this year to compete with the likes of HBO, Amazon, and Netflix. But with every day seeming like it’s bringing a new announcement of a new show coming to Apple, the question remains: where will we watch it?

Apple has already begun releasing its own projects: it released Planet of the Apps and Carpool Karaoke last year on Apple Music, but its big slate of original content is expected to begin rolling out as early as March 2019. To prepare for that, the company has greenlit or begun developing an impressive slate of projects: so far, Apple has signed a multiyear deal with Oprah Winfrey to develop new shows, ordered a pair of children’s shows from the creators of Sesame Street, a reboot of the science fiction anthology show Amazing Stories, a Hunger Games-style dystopian show called See, a series from La La Land director Damien Chazelle, a thriller series from M. Night Shyamalan, a space drama from Battlestar Galactica creator Ron Moore, a drama about a morning show starring Reese Witherspoon and Jennifer Aniston, and an adaptation of Isaac Asimov’s classic science fiction novel Foundation. There are also reports that it’s working to acquire the rights for an animated film.

MacBook Pro keyboards - Apple Extended Repair Program

Apple acknowledges faulty MacBook and MacBook Pro keyboards with new repair program
Extended service for four years from original purchase date

Apple has officially acknowledged that there are problems with its “butterfly” mechanism built into the keyboards of the recent MacBook and MacBook Pro laptops. The company is now offering an extended keyboard service program for computers affected by the issue, via iMore.

The extended warranty covers replacement of one or more keys or the whole keyboard, depending on the extent of users’ problems, and it covers eligible laptops up to four years after the computer was bought at retail. (Every MacBook and MacBook Pro model with the butterfly switches seems to be included.) That’s dramatically longer than the limited warranty the computers ship with or even Apple’s extended AppleCare Plus.

According to Apple’s service page, the program covers the following issues:
  • Letters or characters repeat unexpectedly
  • Letters or characters do not appear
  • Key(s) feel “sticky” or do not respond in a consistent manner
Complaints from users about Apple’s recent laptop keyboards have grown in the past weeks and months, with people saying that the keyboards tend to fail entirely when encountering dust and the fragile design makes them difficult to repair. And while it’s certainly taken longer than most users would probably have liked, it’s good to see Apple is finally taking steps to solve the problem.

Apple TV 4K ethernet and wifi?

I have a new Apple TV 4K. The wifi speed in the back of my house where the Apple TV is is pretty bad, usually getting around 20mbs. This is ok for regular HD, but moving forward into 4K I am not sure that will be fast enough. I want to connect via ethernet the Apple TV to get the high speed 100+ mbps connection I have, but I want to maintain airplay. Does the Apple TV 4k allow for both if it is connected for ethernet? Will the wifi work as well?

powerline networking question

I currently have this:
https://www.staples.ca/en/d-link-dhp...cationsContent

It is power line networking and works very well. I have one connected to the airport basestation and the other end goes into a desktop PC. I want to add another set to extend my network as well as keep up the high speed to the other end of my house. I am having issues with the wifi, it severely drops. Does anyone know if the same kit above works where I can just plug these into different outlets around the house or if one has to have a connection right from the router and the other end to where you want to plug something in? Or will the one I have connected to the router power another 2 if I were to buy the above kit again?

Say What???

The entire article is here:
https://www.seattlepi.com/news/crime...d-12973508.php
But this is the paragraph that still has my brain spinning.
Quote:

According to prosecutors, associates of some of the arrested traffickers have been killed in shootings in King County. Some of the defendants were recorded on wiretaps discussing the shootings and planning to obtain guns.
Why arrest someone who has already been killed? How on earth does this level of incompetence ever get by an editor?

home theatre question

I am thinking of making a change to my home theatre setup. Currently I have a denon receiver, 2 polk tower speakers for left and right as well as 2 polk rear surround sound speakers and a klipsch centre speaker all connected to a Samsung QLED 55" 4k tv. All sounds good but takes up space. I moved into a new house a few months back and while bigger my media room is a bit smaller and would like to clean things up.

I have a few devices, I have an Apple TV, PS4 and a Nintendo Switch. They all run into the Denon receiver and through the receiver to the TV via HDMI.

I was thinking of replacing my speakers with this:
https://www.bestbuy.ca/en-ca/product...10585801.aspx?

Not sure exactly how the setup works with a sound bar, so I still run everything through the receiver and have the sound go out from the receiver into the sound bar while the video goes to the TV or is the sound bar supposed to replace the need for the receiver altogether?

Time Machine Restore Becomes Glacial

What are the reasons that a Time Machine restore becomes slower than molasses?

Over a period of around 14 to 16 hours, the restore speed went from about 50MB/s, where it was for a couple of hours, gradually down to 2MB/s. And the time of completion went from about 2 hours, to the 19 hours that are now shown.

The restore has progressed to about half way in about 22 hours.

I have already spent a good three hours total searching for any recent reasons or solutions, with no viable reasons or solutions.

This question has been up on the Apple forums for over an hour. Four views, no answers.

2010 MacBook Pro Issues

Hello!

Some background:

I refurbish/fix/repair MacBooks as a little side gig. I'm also getting into board level repairs but haven't done much with that yet (have all the equipment on my desk but my gosh the learning curve is steep).

I have two matching 13" MacBook Pro, Mid-2010. 2.4ghz Core 2 Duo.

One of them had display issues and I had the board repaired (the LVDS connector was pooched).

The other one came from ebay without power issues, but it has the same problem as the first.

They both turn on.

They both sit at the boot option menu if you hold "Option" when booting.

The first unit came with an old OS installed (maybe snow leopard?), and it worked fine (with no display). Once it was repaired, it did boot up without issue to this old install.
I nuked the HDD and reinstalled High Sierra (I've since tried with Sierra, El Capitan, and Snow Leopard).

The issues:

- When a fresh install HDD is in the units, they will turn on, boot, and come to the Apple Logo/loading bar. The bar will go about 2/3 of the way, and then get stuck. Sometimes it will sit stuck, sometimes the unit will restart on it's own and continue in that cycle.

It will experience the same issue booting from an internally installed HDD or SSD with High Sierra.

It will experience the same issue booting from the SSD through external USB adapter.

It will experience the same issue booting from a USB installer.

I think it's safe to say it is a board issue, but thought it was weird that two of the same units have the exact same problem, so here I am for advice.

Thanks everyone!

Jeff
