Discontinued Navigon and new iPhone

As some of you may know, NAVIGON by Garmin has been discontinued since May. I love the app and am disappointed that Garmin chose to take it down. With it no longer available for download, how would I reinstall it on a new iPhone or during a clean install? Is there a easy and simple way of adding it to a factory fresh iPhone and/or iPad? Also, the maps may no longer be available for download. That’s another issue. I haven’t yet seen a comparable app with built in maps.

Affinity Publisher (beta) is finally here!

At long last and 18 months behind schedule, the good folks at Affinity have released an advanced Beta of the missing app: Publisher.

This means that the only two reasons to stay with the Adobe sub model are now Lightroom and (for some) Acrobat but CC is dead, long live the new king!

Apple Is Clearly Working on AR Glasses

Quote:

Apple has bought Akonia Holographics, a Colorado-based startup dedicated to the manufacturing of displays for augmented reality glasses.

In addition to other recent purchases, this is an extremely strong indicator that the Cupertino company is actively working on AR glasses.idropnews/Martin Hajekidropnews/Martin HajekAccording to Akonia’s web site, its more than 200 patents result in a technology that can create “thin, transparent smart glass lenses that display vibrant, full-color, wide field-of-view images.” Just the kind of qualities that would be touted by Phil Schiller at a special AR glasses event.
Apple’s AR acquisition trail

Akonia is only the latest in a long series of purchases that show that Apple is actively working on developing AR glasses. Apple has been buying a lot of companies with technologies that are directly applicable in an AR set since as eagerly as 2013.

Big ElCap irritant

<Rant>So for the umpteenth time a simple pdf created in Numbers has failed to open, giving me a dialog box saying: ' “xxx.pdf” can’t be opened because it is from an unidentified developer. '

So I do the right click open with routine, check the box to tell it to always open with Preview, even save changes when I close it. Then a day or 2 down the road I'm right back where I started.:ptptptptp

Same issue with some rtf files created in Text Edit.

Enough with the bells and whistles, maybe Apple should concentrate on just making things work.</Rant>

iTunes Download Question

I have still having a "no privileges" issue with my current iTunes and was wondering if reinstalling the current version, or if that did't work then an older version may resolve this issue. I have tried safe mode; creating an new user account and changing the Itunes related folders to Read & Write and applying the change for all items with the down arrow, still getting the error.

Do I unistall my current iTunes before downloading again and if so what is the best way to do this. Wasn't sure if I could just download the latest version again and it would reinstall correclty over the existing one.

No LTE on iPhone 7?

I just noticed recently that I only have 3G on my 7+. I have always had LTE in my work area and around the city but now that I have been watching it I notice it is never in LTE. I compared with another phone with Rogers and it was in LTE so the network is available here. All I can think of is there is some hardware or software issue. Any way to diagnose this? Running latest version of iOS and have restarted numerous times with no change. Everything else works as it should and data works with 3G just never a connection to LTE. I did check in system preferences and LTE is on as well.

New iPhones Coming Soon

Apple's newest phones will embrace iPhone X design with new colours, bigger screens

Quote:

Apple Inc. is not only doubling down on the iPhone X, it’s tripling down.

The world’s most valuable company plans to launch three new phones soon that keep the edge-to-edge screen design of last year’s flagship, according to people familiar with the matter. The devices will boast a wider range of prices, features and sizes to increase their appeal, said the people, who asked not to be identified discussing unannounced products.

However, none of the three iPhones will be wholly new designs like the iPhone X was last year or the iPhone 6 in 2014, with some inside Apple labeling the launch as an “S year,” a designation the company has given to new handsets that retain the previous design but add new internal features. The company is planning more significant changes for next year, they added.

RIP Neil Simon

"Neil Simon, famed playwright who found humor by chronicling middle-class concerns, dies at 91.

The Pulitzer- and Tony-winning author, who was often called the world's most popular playwright after Shakespeare, wrote dozens of plays and dominated Broadway with hits such as "The Odd Couple," "Lost in Yonkers" and "Barefoot in the Park." "

RIP John McCain

" Sen. John McCain, the 2008 GOP presidential nominee who was driven by a code of honor that defined and haunted him, dies at 81

McCain endured more than five years of imprisonment and torture by the North Vietnamese as a young Navy pilot. He went on to battle foes — on the left and the right — in the marble corridors of Washington.

A Republican who seemed his truest self when outraged, he reveled in opposing orthodoxy and spent decades representing Arizona in the Senate. He twice ran unsuccessfully for president. McCain was diagnosed with a brain tumor in July 2017."

MacBook Pro 9,2 - a brief tribute to the king of computing

--Oops, wrong forum - mods, please move to proper spot... sorry about that--

I'm very biased because this is my daily go-to device, but just a quick few thoughts on the king of computing - MacBook Pro 9,2.

First lets use the internet archive to revisit the original product page:
https://web.archive.org/web/20120618...3-and-15-inch/

Summary of base model:
$1229, i5 2.5GHz, 4GB DDR3, 500GB 5400RPM, 8x SuperDrive, Ports: Gigabit Ethernet; FireWire 800; Thunderbolt 1; USB3 x2; SDXC, 802.11n, Bluetooth 4.0, 7 hours wireless web, 4.5 lbs

One of the reasons why I LOVE this computer is the fun of easily taking it apart to upgrade it. Need to install a new battery, no problem. Upgrade the RAM, easy. New SSD hard drive, go for it. Dual hard drives, YES!

Apple is still showing love to this little wonder as well, just look at the OS upgrades officially supported:
- 10.7 Lion
- 10.8 Mountain Lion
- 10.9 Mavericks
- 10.10 Yosemite
- 10.11 El Capitan
- 10.12 Sierra
- 10.13 High Sierra
- 10.14 Mojave

In theory this computer can support:
- 16 GB RAM
- 2TB SSD
- 4TB SATA Drive (in place of the optical drive)

WHAT A BEAST!

In a world of fixed point-of-sale RAM, heat-gun melt the glue not the screen, and limited storage upgradeability... the 9,2 seems to be one of the last Apple computers that welcomed the end-user to use, explore, upgrade, and expand.

2.5Ghz Core i5
16GB Ram
256GB SSD
60 cycles on the battery

Case, keyboard, display all look beautiful, see pictures. Minor, tiny surface scuffs near the front edge on the back of the display/top (managed to get one in a photo, but the others never showed up in the pics). Some very minor nicks around the MagSafe connector (in the case, again, very minor, see photo) and the screen can use a cleaning (I will leave that to you, I don't have any microfibre cloths). There is one scratch on the bottom case.

Comes in original box with 60W MagSafe adapter (adapter does show signs of use - but still intact ) and a par of unused (but plastic removed) EarPods.

CPU runs cool and quiet, idling between 42 and 55 degrees depending on ambient temperature.

$849, or $775 if you want to downgrade to 4GB Ram (I can use the ram in another machine if you already have your own ram.)

$35 shipping anywhere in Canada.

Free shipping if paying in Cryptocurrency! Bitcoin, Ethereum, Zcash, Monero and QTUM now accepted.

The cable is not worn from use, it looks like it got pinched in a drawer or in a zipper. A piece of heat shrink tubing will fix that right up, or it can probably be left as-is.

What makes Acrobat Pro so good at creating small pdfs...

... and what can you replace it with?

With the impending demise of the CS suite in 10.14, I have been testing replacements. As explained elsewhere Affinity provides excellent software at a fraction of the cost and without subscription.

However finding a replacement pdf creator has stumped me so far. All the built-in creators in scanning applications create files typically twice the size of anything Acrobat produces. My workflow is to scan with *whatever* is at hand (or directly from Acrobat if the device is Twain compliant) and then run it through OCR in Acrobat: de-skews anything that needs to be and divides file size by two (for the same visible quality). If I'm bothered I also carry out another save in 'reduced size mode' which makes the file compatible with Acrobat 9 or above only. That saves another 10%.

So, what's Adobe's secret sauce? Does anybody else come close?

Thanks

François

Storage on MBP almost full?! When I store barely anything?!

My 2016 MBP with 250GB of flash storage somehow tells me I have:

62GB Apps
47GB Photos
42GB Movies
38GB Other

I cannot find any of these amounts of things on my system. How is this storage status possible when I store no photos, no movies are downloaded and I don't use 62GB of apps??? Is the fact that my Google Drive is synced what's taking up storage???

The Politically (In)Correct Thread

So a thread intended to encourage sane (is that possible) discussion of various aspects of political correctness.

Will kick it off with this article from the Calgary Herald:
https://calgaryherald.com/pmn/news-p...3-4eede1617509

Pardon the full quote but the Herald has been known to disappear articles after a fairly short time span.
Quote:

Statue of John A. Macdonald removed from Victoria City Hall in act of reconciliation

VICTORIA — A statue of Canada’s first prime minister has been removed from the grounds outside Victoria City Hall, days after the city council voted to remove it.

The city began discussions in 2017 to remove the statue of Sir John A. Macdonald as part of the reconciliation process with the Songhees and Esquimalt First Nations, voting seven to one Thursday to have it removed.

Songhees Chief Ron Sam wrote in a July 31 letter to Victoria Mayor Lisa Helps that removing the statue is an important step in the city’s path toward reconciliation.

Minutes from the council meeting say the statue will be stored in a facility until the city determines what to do with the statue, adding they were not trying to “erase history.”

Supporters and protesters alike were visible at city hall carrying placards and signs, while some protesters wrapped themselves in Canadian and British Columbian flags and sang the national anthem.

Macdonald played a significant role in the creation of the residential school system that displaced thousands of Indigenous youth, and served as the MP for Victoria from 1878 to 1882.
So the city of Victoria is not trying to erase history, but rather just hiding a statue of Canada's first Prime Minister. Supposedly to appease the gods of political correctness.

However it does bring up another issue. What is the politically correct term for a Canadian Indian. Indian served well for nearly 500 years, after that Natives, Native Canadians And Indigenous People have all come to the plate. I live close to the Siksika Reserve, some of them do call themselves Indians. Personally I think the Indigenous phase will be short lived. The term Indigenous is too closely related to indigent, which is an image the Native/Aboriginal/Indigenous/Indian population would dearly love to shake. That will be difficult for the simple reason that far too many are addicted to drugs and alcohol and to shake the image, they must also shake the addictions.

guest network causing wifi interference?

I have an Airport Extreme for my wifi at work, it is not the latest model, maybe 5 or 6 years old, the slim white one. Anyways for a while I have been having network drops or just really slow internet (60mb connection). I would restart the modem (rogers) thinking it was maybe a Rogers issue as there is a lot of construction going on here the last few years. Would also restart the extreme. I would immediately get faster internet but then it would slowly slow down again, pages like ehmac loading really slow.

Anyways today I had this idea that maybe something was interfering with the wifi network. Did a google search and found a free app called "NetSpot". It scanned the network (using the free version) and it showed me the guest network I had running was using the same channel as the regular wifi. Not sure if this is normal or not I decided to turn off the guest network, it is not really any thing crucial and hardly used. Well as soon as I did that everything is loading faster, have not had my connection drop or slow to the point that I felt I needed to restart everything again. So it seems the guest network was conflicting somehow with the main network. This seems very strange to me as it is a guest network coming from the Apple Extreme, so would it not know to use a different channel or to do whatever is needed to not interfere with the other wifi band? Had this network running for years with no problem, is this maybe a sign of a hardware issue and it is showing by the guest network causing issues for my main network?

Airport is updated.

Mini and MacBook Pro

I use a Mac Mini as my main computer and also as an audio entertainment control, it uses time machine with 2 raid drives.

We are planning some extensive travel and figure I will use my older MacBook Pro notebook when on the road, I have a 250 Gb SSD that I can install in the MBP to help speed it up. It has not been used in a couple years and I will do a factory reboot and full update once the SSD is installed.

Is there some way I can make the MBP a clone of the Mini (without the entertainment) and then keep the 2 systems synced, when I am at home, without using the cloud?

Using the Mac while doing a backup?

I usually do a backup of the various Macs in the family during the night.

Forgot to do one last night for a family member who is leaving on a two week trip today and we wanted to do a backup before she leaves.
We managed to find just enough time before she had to get to the airport to complete the backup (while not using the Mac during that time) but I was wondering if I could have done small tasks, like check email or simple short web searches while the backup was in progress without messing up the backup.

I realize anything I download at that time or my emails may not be backed up - that is not an issue - I just wondered if using the Mac for any tasks during the backup could affect the backup file.
using CCC or
using SuperDuper
if there is a difference.

Apple watch keeps showing music instead of watch

I have the latest Apple Watch LTE model. For some reason when I look at my wrist it always shows what you see below. It is from my iTunes music on my phone. I rarely listen to music through my phone generally use it for Audible and Sirius XM and the last thing l listened to on the phone was Audible. Not sure why music is popping up but it is really annoying as I want to see a watch and not my music that is not playing.

Is there some setting somewhere to fix this or turn it off? I know it shows whatever I am listening to on the watch when I am actually using it but I never have audible or siriusxm show up on the watch face when not being used like I am having with music.
