MacBook Pro SSD Service Program

Apple Launches Replacement Program for Faulty SSDs in MacBook Pro Models
Apple has determined that a limited number of 128GB and 256GB solid-state drives (SSD) used in 13-inch MacBook Pro (non Touch Bar) units have an issue that may result in data loss and failure of the drive. 13-inch MacBook Pro units with affected drives were sold between June 2017 and June 2018.

Apple says MacBook Pro with Touch Bar models are not affected, nor older MacBook Pro models.

You can enter in your device’s serial number here to see if your 13-inch MacBook Pro without Touch Bar is eligible or not. Canadian models are eligible for this repair.

ipad &ipod

I just bought a new ipod touch running ios12.1 and when I tried to connect with my imac running 10.11, a message advised that I need to update the os to 10.11. The ipod's specs says that it should work with os 10.8. I phoned apple and after they put me on hold to research the problem, I was told that with ios 12.1 I'll need to update my imac's os. Out of curiosity I checked my ipad mini 2 running ios12,01 and I got the same message. It worked fine with ios 11. Luckily, my mbp has Sierra and the ipod works. Itunes is up to date on both computers.

Apple needs to update their specs for the ipod touch or fix the ios to be able run with an older os.

Got Sennheiser headphones? You should see this

If you’ve ever used a Sennheiser headset with your Mac, it is wide open to attack

If you’ve ever used a Sennheiser headset or speakerphone device with your Mac (or Windows PC), the accompanying HeadSetup app has left your machine wide open to attack.

View PDF files with alpha channel in Preview

I have run into problems viewing some PDF files in Preview that fails to show images, but no such problem when I open the same files in Adobe Acrobat. Preview didn't have this issue when I had OS 10.9 installed. Since the upgrade to OS 10.11 then 10.12 a few months ago, the problem appeared.

Some of the PDF files that I download or receive in email contain an alpha channel. I only learned about this when Preview failed to display the file content properly and I opened the file in GraphicConverter which showed the checkered transparent alpha channel layer. I don't know what is the need of the alpha channel, perhaps for printing?

Is it possible to flatten the alpha channel in Preview or Acrobat? One such PDF file is this. Click the "Download PDF" button at right.

Anyone using HDR software?

Is anyone using HDR software?

I got interested in it to try to enhance pictures that have very light and very dark areas and where all the details in the black areas are not visible using a normal exposure setting on a camera.

The software I just tested - well tested is maybe a bit too strong a word - I just selected oner of my "problem" images , loaded into the software and then picked and saved one of the preset images that seemed the most natural.
I'm pretty happy with the results and will probably buy the software before the day is out since they offer a 25% discount today.

Just wondered if others are using HDR software and if so which one.
I was looking for one that can enhance existing jpgs.

Images enclosed, first one the way I received it from the photographer, second one with one of the easyHDR preset enhancement where one can see the wheels and trucks of the car

GM Shutting down all operations in Oshawa

General Motors set to end factory operations in Oshawa
General Motors are set to end their operations in Oshawa, affecting almost 3,000 union and salary positions.

According to General Motors, the plant has been in operation in Oshawa since 1953 and has built models for Pontiac, Chevrolet and Buick. Currently, the plant builds the Cadillac XTS, the Chevrolet Impala, the Chevrolet Silverado and the GMC Sierra.

* * *

“Unifor received notification today from General Motors that the company will make a major announcement tomorrow that will impact its global operations,” wrote the union in the statement. “While the union does not have complete details of the overall announcement we have been informed that, as of now, there is no product allocated to the Oshawa Assembly Plant past December 2019. Based on commitments made during 2016 contract negotiations, Unifor does not accept this announcement and is immediately calling on GM to live up to the spirit of that agreement. Unifor is scheduled to hold a discussion with General Motors tomorrow and will provide further comment following the meeting.”

This is not the first time the factory has faced closure. In 2015, GM moved the Camaro line to a plant in Michigan, which saw the elimination of 1,000 jobs at the Oshawa plant. In 2009 the government bailout for auto manufacturers established that 16 per cent of GM’s manufacturing in North America was to be kept in Canada.

That stipulation lapsed in 2016.

To Upgrade or Not Upgrade - That is The Question

I'm currently running El Capitan, 27" iMac, mid 2010.
System works OK, older software works OK, but the whole machine is getting slower and slower. Cleaned cashes etc with Onyx, cleared most icons/aliases off desktop etc etc etc.
Speed increased a bit but still slowwww. ( 2.50 minutes to boot up, Safari slow to open sites etc etc.?)

My problem is, do I find & re-install El Capitan? Upgrade to Sierra, or go for High Sierra.
Many of the new "features" in Sierra & High Sierra are not of interest to me - Storing stuff in iCloud would just be a very slow P.I.T.A!

I have a clean partition available on my internal drive, currently have a bootable copy of Snow Leopard & El Capitan with separate back-ups, so if I screw up an install I think I can revert to where I am at the moment.

I would appreciate any sage advice and or (polite) suggestions from the membership here.

Strange Problem with MS Power Point

I have a Power Point presentation that works differently on two Macs even though each Mac runs the same Mac OS and the same version of power point.

Let me explain -

On a Mac Mini 2012 running OS 10.11.6 and MS Office 2011, after I launch the PPT presentation and select view>slideshow, the slide opens full screen on the monitor the way it should.

If I do the same thing on a MacBook pro 2011 running OS 10.11.5 and MS Office 2011, after I launch the PPT presentation and select view>slideshow, the slide doesn't really change - the toolbar is still there and all that happens is that the desktop icons disappear.
I expected the slide to open full screen like on the Mini.

The presentation itself is on a USB flash drive so it is identical in both cases.

I just reinstalled Office 2011 on the MacBook pro, but the problem is the same.
To reinstall, I moved the existing Microsoft folder from the application folder to the trash - are there other MS files I should have trashed as well before installing MS Office again?
Or does anyone have an idea what might be going on?

Thanks.

Can a 2017 MacBook Air 1.8 run El Capitan (10.11)

I realize the 2017 MacBook Air was shipped with OS 10.12, but since it seems to be only a small upgrade from the MBa 2016. I thought there is a chance the 2017 will run on OS 10.11 as well.

Anyone know for sure?

Thanks

MacOSDefender.app: do I need it?

Hi
This morning, on opening my mac (mac mini late 2014, running Mojave), I get a box stating "MacOSDefender.app want to control "Safari.app". Authorizing this control will give it access to documents and data in "Safari.app" and will permit it to execute actions from this app."

I can either refuse or accept this control. I clicked on the refuse icon but this message will pop up again and again.

What's this thing? I restarted my computer to no avail.

I'm thing the Airhead is planning on having Canada Post initiate a Lockout.

Basing this on CPP and OAS cheques arriving 2 weeks early and Canada Post rejecting shipping on my latest Amazon.ca order.

Anyways if the Airhead is trying to lose the next election, shutting down Canada Post right in the heart of the Christmas Rush should get the job done.

Internal Microphone Static

I'm always grateful for the help on here. Every time I check back in with an issue, someone comes to the rescue. So, thanks.
I've just noticed that my internal mic on the Mac Air isn't allowing me to record my voice. Just tried Audacity, haven't had to use the mic in quite some time. Deleted and downloaded Audacity again. Nothing changed. All I get is tremendous white noise sound, very disturbing, just a SHSHHHHHHHHHH sound. Awful. I also tried to use iMovie and Photo Booth to make sure it wasn't Audacity, same thing. Am I looking at a repair bill? Not ready for that. Just two stinking little pins on the side. Arrgh. Thoughts? Thanks.

~Michael.

RIP Stan Lee

Stan Lee dies at 95, AP reports. He co-created Spider-Man and helped make Marvel a comics powerhouse.

"Stan Lee helped usher comics out of a dark age in the 1960s by co-creating morally complex heroes, including the self-doubting Spider-Man, the bickering Fantastic Four, the swaggering Iron Man and the raging Incredible Hulk. His name became synonymous with Marvel Comics."

Lest we forget

One hundred years ago this Sunday. Church bells shall ring out at 11AM on Sunday all over the world. Lest we forget.

A pre-Remembrance Day video. When I was a child, it was called Armistice Day. Then it became Veterans Day in the US. Sadly, although it is a long three day weekend, many in the US will be out shopping. :-(

On November 11, 1999 Terry Kelly was in a Shoppers Drug Mart store in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. At 10:55 AM an announcement came over the store's PA asking customers who would still be on the premises at 11:00 AM to give two minutes of silence in respect to the veterans who have sacrificed so much for us.

backup to new iPhone signing into iCloud loop

Anytime I try and do something with an Apple product lately it always leaves me scratching my head and fighting with something. They certainly are not simple anymore.

Anyways my mom has an iPhone 6+. I am handing down my 7+ to her. I did a backup of her phone, restored it to the 7+. That went smoothly, all the apps are loaded and updated, logged into iCloud, mail coming in, all seems well except for a stupid notice in preferences under setup phone. I run through the setup which asks me to setup my finger, I use mine for now just to get through it all. That goes fine then asks me to log into iCloud, which was done already but ok I do it again. Says this iCloud is already added then goes into spin mode "signing in to iCloud". Been going on at least 10 mins now. I have tried signing out of the accounts and doing this, same problem. Restarted the phone, same problem. Other then ignore this how do I get rid of it???

I am getting tired of "thinking different".

**update**
Fixed it, had to go sign out of everything and run that silly setup tool which only sets up the finger and the iCloud account, despite the iCloud account already being signed into. Is Apple just getting sloppy with their software? I dread changing passwords or doing anything like this these days.

Desktop Files Missing In Finder

I keep most of my working files on my desktop, (large files as alias) and access them to attach to posts in ehMac often via screenshots, etc. Suddenly though, my files do not show up in finder and try as I might, I cannot think what I might have done to cause this. Anyone have any idea how I can recover this feature?

Here is a screen shot of the open Finder window and the files on the desktop that should show up there but do not. Instead it shows the Downloads folder which is empty even though the Desktop is selected in the list at left, but will not appear.

How can one install a new font on preview "text annotate"?

Hi,

I want to install a new font to be used to annotate images in preview.

The font installed fine in Fontbook, shows up properly and is selectable, but that new font I installed in Fontbook does not appear in the font drop down menu in the preview text annotate option.

Is there anther install I need to do? or how can I use that font to annotate?

Googled for this but the only thing I found is how to add new fonts to the Mac which I have already done.

OS is ElCapitan

transfer songs from iPhone to flash drive

Hi, I keep my music library on a flash drive as there isn't enough room on my MacBook Air. Now the flash drive won't mount and I can't play music from my MacBook. However the songs are all on my iphone. Has anyone tried transferring songs from an iPhone to a flash drive? I know that there are a bunch of third party programs out there to help do this. They all have various costs. I'm just not sure which work the best. Most of these songs are mp3s from cds.
