Early-2011 13-in. MacBook Pro startup problem

My friend came to town to spend her holiday and she took her early-2011 13-in. MBP along to show me the startup problem. She said that about two months ago the machine suddenly could not boot and remained unbootable since.

When I turned on her MBP, the startup status bar looked different. There was a thick gray bar below the Apple logo, the same gray status bar that appeared after applying a firmware and security update. The usual startup status bar is a thinner black line. The gray status bar progressed to about halfway then the screen went black and nothing happened after that as if the machine shut itself down. After waiting a few minutes I pressed the power button again and the booting started all over then failed pretty much at the same spot.

I then used target mode to connect her machine to my early-2011 15-in. MBP. It took quite a few minutes before the icon of the SSD in her machine appeared on my Desktop along with the error message that the drive was unbootable but I could retrieve the files in there. The SSD in her MBP has OS 10.9 installed. I copied all the files that she wanted to save to my MBP.

Since my MBP could read her SSD, I launched Disk Utility to verify the problematic drive. There was a long list of errors with its directory. I did not attempt the repair as I was set to format the SSD and install OS 10.12 on it.

After shutting down her MBP, I removed the SSD and put one of my spare HDD with OS 10.12 in the machine. The next startup was successfully after more than five minutes. Her MBP was on a/c power and the little light showed green. But the battery indicator showed zero percent juice with the "Replace Now" message. Looked like the battery was dead. The cursor movement was jittery and the overall performance was very sluggish like slow motion.

Just to satisfy me that there wasn't a problem that prevented the battery to recharge, I followed the instructions to remove the battery and held the power button down for 20 seconds to reset the SMC. I inserted the battery back in her MBP, took out the OS 10.12 HDD and put in the working OS 10.12 SSD in my MBP in her machine. I also reset NVRAM on the next restart. The startup was a little faster until the last part which took perhaps two minutes. Finally the Desktop appeared but the cursor movement and performance remained sluggish.

Could a battery that suddenly died cause a directory corruption of the OS? Does a dead battery cause the sluggish performance? Would a new battery fix the performance problem?

But the bigger question is whether it is worthwhile to replace the battery even though everything else with the machine appears to be fine. This is a 2011 model and Apple classifies it as vintage. It won't run OS 10.14 and above. My friend no longer needs her MBP. But I hate to throw out a working machine.

Time Machine Restore / Migration Assistant help needed

iMac 27" Late 2013, macOS Mojave 10.14.2, with all updates done. I have two user accounts on this machine - mine and my wife's.

I have the issue of blank screen after logging out of the Guest Account (does not happen when logging out of any of the other two user accounts).

I also have another issue once the machine goes to sleep after logging out of any account. When I press any key to wake the machine so that I can log in, it takes a few presses of the key for the machine to wake up; and once it does, there's a quick blanking of the screen and it flicks back on.

Apple is unable to help with this issue and told me to do a clean install; hence the following question:

Let's say I do a Time Machine backup of the full system.

I then do a clean install of Mojave, and create a new dummy account so that I can use Migration Assistant to restore our old accounts and data.

Now, I do not wish to restore applications, I shall reinstall each individually. I only need to restore the data and emails and keychain passwords for both accounts.

The Migration Assistant info available online does not specifically address this question - if I choose to only restore the two users, will all the old emails be restored properly along with the accounts info and passwords and the POP/SMTP settings etc.? We are still old-fashioned and prefer POP3 to IMAP.

And will it also restore the keychains?

Thanks and cheers

iPhone 6. Worst iPhone EVER?

It's reported that the most problematic iPhone has been the iPhone 6 at a 22% failure rate. Anecdotally, I'm having the same results. The most reliable, reportedly, are the 8 Plus and the X, at 3% failure.

Does this match up with you Genious' recommendations and/or in-store experiences?

Humorous Headlines

This one makes for an interesting Christmas story. Apparently a seven year old called 911 when he didn’t like his Christmas present.

Quote:

Seven-year-old calls 911 after getting snow pants for Christmas

A 7-year-old Ont. boy might have just added himself to next year’s naughty list after calling 911 for receiving snow pants as a Christmas gift.

Ontario Provincial Police Sgt. Kerry Schmidt -- who tweeted the incident -- said the call was placed in the early evening on Dec. 25.

He said the boy was upset with his present and wanted the police to help.

Season's greetings from Europe

Hi all, here I am again from Belgium, where poppies grow, with my season's greetings.

I follow EhMac all year around but do not post that much, sorry.

@ FEXL: could you, as a very intelligent person, stop the war path here as a XMas resolution, please?

You are not a fascist, not even an extreme right winger, but an extremely liberal biker boy I suppose. In a way I admire your confederate flag. But please do compromise.

Out here in Europe, we get by through compromise. I suggest you do the same at EhMac.
No more war, please! Out here in the poppy fields we have sure had enough.

@ Cubamark: No Pasaran!

@ MacFury: prettige feestdagen!

In general, here you go:

A bit Ironic

https://calgaryherald.com/news/crime...b-973402324b7d

I believe that Direct Buy was a multi-level marketing scheme, where the main emphasis was selling memberships.

Several years ago I suffered through one of their sales presentations. Thankfully my policy of having no credit card and leaving the check book at home served me very well on that occasion.

In the holiday spirit

Sitting in front of the tube... well... not a tube anymore, is it? Somehow "sitting in front of the flat panel" doesn't have the same ring to it...

In any case... visiting with my folks, and "The Grinch Who Stole Christmas" comes on, so my son is called in to watch it (and likes it). My childhood memories are triggered - I remembered every twitch of the animated lip, lift of the brow, etc., of the Grinch and his dog/reindeer. Must have seen it dozens of times as a child, and had it ingrained in my brain. Ah, pop culture.

I wondered who it was that sang "You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch!", thinking it had a James Earl Jones sound, though of course it would have been far too early for that performer. The internet returned two bits of info that I hadn't realized: Boris Karloff narrated the program, and though many folks thought he also sang the tune (others thought Tennessee Ernie Ford did it),

in fact it was sung by a fellow who every single one of you has heard in many other instances: Thurl Ravenscroft (Wikipedia)

Also known as....

Tony the Tiger! (1952—2005)

He began as a doo-wop singer, forming a group known as the Mellomen:

Penny Marshall - RIP

PENNY MARSHALL DEAD AT 75

Quote:

Penny Marshall, the amazing actress, comedian and director has died ... TMZ has learned.
Marshall died Monday night at her Hollywood Hills home. We've learned the cause of death was complications from diabetes.

Penny's first recurring role was playing Myrna Turner on "The Odd Couple," which was directed by her brother. She also appeared on "Happy Days" with Cindy Williams, and they became famous from their spin-off sitcom, "Laverne & Shirley." It became a monster hit in 1976 and ran for 8 seasons. Her character's moniker -- the "L" for Laverne on her sweater -- became one of the most famous logos in television.

Want to replace my wide-fprmal AIO - which one to get?

Hi,

I have an Epson WF-7520 wide-format printer/scanner that has been working hard and is starting to give me problems - doesn't recognize a replacement cartridge at times and the contact that determines if the paper tray is inserted properly has also become a bit touchy.

So I think it is time to replace this.

I need a wide-format printer & scanner that can handle at least 11 x 17 inch paper and also scan at least that size.
Fax, WiFi, card readers and things like that are not necassary, but I would like one that takes non-OEM ink without complaints.
Two paper trays are handy, so is a separate paper feed that can take very heavy paper, like 100 lbs.

Seems the only contenders are
1. Epson WF-7720 at $300.- list with a sale price of $200.- occasionally, or
2. HP Office Jet pro 7740 at $250.- right now at Staples.

I don't think Canon makes anything like that.

In the past, HP was not very Mac-friendly, but Epson can drive me up the wall with their "Can't recognize cartridge" problems even if you use Epson OEM cartridges.

Has anyone used the HP printer with a Mac?
What is their current compatibility?
Any other printers I should consider?

2nd internal drive not mounting on Mac Mini

G'day,

I have 2 internal drives, 1 TB SSD with El Capitan and a 1 TB HDD with macOS Mojave.

El Capitan was a fresh install on the SSD which was formatted as Journaled HFS+. The HDD says Scheme GUID Partition Map.

It’s not mounting and is not showing any where in the Finder.

Disk Utility can see it, run First Aid but can’t mount it. DiskWarrior 4.4 can see it in the Hardware pane and can run Test Device. It says the diagnostics indicate the drive is functioning normally.

What could I do to get this drive to mount?

Has Federal Government Usurped The Rights Of Canadians?

Canadian Government Charged In Usurpation Of The Sovereign Rights Of Canadians & Indigenous Nations

One is left to wonder why the MSM has not covered this filing, nor has any province responded as every province was notified.

If this is true, it is a disturbing revelation. It's a couple of hours long, with the intro in French, but switches to English just after the first minute so wait for it.

Wanted To Buy PowerMac G4 Hard Drive Bracket (Sled?)

I'm looking to buy a two drive hard drive bracket for a PowerMac G4 (PCI) computer.

I've searched eBay, but the only ones listed are from the USA and the sellers are wanting $60 to $100 for them with shipping. I'm not going to pay that much for a little piece of metal that will fasten a couple of $10 hard drives to a $20 computer. That would be madness!

So if you have one of these brackets laying around and you want to turn it into cash, let me know.

Thank you.

Flip book to pdf converter

I'm looking for a way to convert a flip book into a pdf so that I can use the catalog (in flip book format) without being connected to the net.

I have seen that for Windows but could find nothing for the Mac.

Lots of pdf to flip book software programs but none the other way around.

Or is there a way I can actually download a flip book file to the Mac and use it off-line?
But I would prefer a pdf.

As a side note - I personally find the flip books annoying - just more unnecessary frill seeing the pages turn.

Alberta, the country.

For decades of my life there has been an undercurrent among Alberta's population for separation. It's like the tide: Depending on who is in Ottawa at the time, the swell comes & goes.

Living through PET's rape of Alberta in the 80's (NEP) made me a lifetime member of the "Albertan before Canada" club and, quite frankly, I have no memory of being a Canadian first. Perhaps as a wide-eyed youth. I honestly can't recall.

I do, however, have memories of the wave of Western separation that washed over many conversations, spawning such dreams as the Western Canada Concept political party, among others.

The Reform Party's efforts to make the West more relevant, with their "The West Wants In" slogan, was the most successful of the grass roots movements. However, it fell far short of what Alberta truly needs.

As much of a prick as Cretien was, he didn't seem to pick the separation scab much. Harper made things a bit easier to take but failed to deal with what westerners in general & Alberta in particular would term critical.

Now we have Jr., the airhead. A twice dropped out grad student, a snowboard instructor, a substitute dama teacher (I'd still like to find out what happened there...), a trust fund baby born with a silver spoon in his mouth who has never worked a day in his life.

The swell of separation is higher than I ever recall, largely due to The Dope's complete distain for Alberta (he learned well from his father) and at least partly because of Red Rachel. It's no longer just a few people talking loudly. It's many men & women quietly voicing their concern for the arrogance of the Laurentian Elite.

I ran across this post today & there are a string of comments, including quotes from articles, that just struck a note today.

I'm tired of the central Canadian a$$holes pulling the puppet strings. I'm tired of our $12 billion transfer payments going to a province that refuses to develop its own resources & is content to receive gov't welfare. I'm tired of being told we can't build pipelines to move our petroleum product to world markets. I'm tired of leftist, Progressive group-think. I'm tired of having French on my cereal box. I'm tired of dysfunctional Kaybeck businesses receiving gov't welfare. I'm tired of being Canada's milch cow.

It's long overdue, my Alberta friends. It's time to grab the bull by the horns & get the hell out.

It's time to secede.

Apple WatchOS update bring heart monitor feature

I've had no less than three friends ask me in the past year about picking up an Apple Watch as a gift for elderly parents with heart issues, to make use of the monitoring capabilities. Today Apple upped it's heart monitoring game with anywhere, anytime ECG ability:

ECG app and irregular heart rhythm notification available today on Apple Watch

Starting today, the ECG app on Apple Watch Series 4 marks the first direct-to-consumer product that enables customers to take an electrocardiogram right from their wrist, capturing heart rhythm in a moment when they experience symptoms like a rapid or skipped heart beat and helping to provide critical data to physicians.

The irregular rhythm notification feature on Apple Watch can now also occasionally check heart rhythms in the background and send a notification if an irregular heart rhythm that appears to be atrial fibrillation (AFib) is identified. Apple worked with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for a number of years to receive De Novo classification for the ECG app and the irregular heart rhythm notification, making the features available over the counter.

Available today as part of a free update to watchOS 5.1.2, the ECG app1 and irregular heart rhythm notification feature2 will help users identify signs of AFib, the most common form of irregular rhythm. When left untreated, AFib is one of the leading conditions that can result in stroke, the second most common cause of death around the world.

* * *

New electrodes built into the back crystal and Digital Crown on Apple Watch Series 4 work together with the ECG app to enable customers to take an ECG similar to a single-lead reading. To take an ECG recording at any time or following an irregular rhythm notification, users launch the new ECG app on Apple Watch Series 4 and hold their finger on the Digital Crown. As the user touches the Digital Crown, the circuit is completed and electrical signals across their heart are measured. After 30 seconds, the heart rhythm is classified as either AFib, sinus rhythm or inconclusive. All recordings, their associated classifications and any noted symptoms are stored securely in the Health app on iPhone. Users can share a PDF of the results with physicians.
