Can't boot OS from SSD in MacPro 3,1

I'm trying to use some legacy equipment on an old Mac Pro 2008 (3,1). Yosemite is supported, but when I try to select the faster SSD as as the startup disk for Yosemite (visible in startup options), it ignores it and reverts to Yosemite on the regular SATA HD.

The SSD is a Kensington 240GB model. The Yosemite operating system was cloned from the SATA to the SSD using Carbon Copy Cloner.

Is there something obvious I might be missing?

This battery condition is normal?

Hello!

My MacBook battery passed 708 cycles and system shows Service Battery.
This is normal?

And, after another battery replacement, may give me an advise to keep more cycles?
It's ok that keep connected to the charger all times even at night while MacBook goes to sleep?

Stay safe :)

please help G4 imac issue...

so i recently dug out my old G4 imac (lampshade model) to mess around on it and do some updates to the ram and hdd. noticed upon booting up that i have some pixels out across the screen, but nothing majorly cutting off the screen...

but then i also noticed i have the flashing folder and it wasn't booting up to the OS. thought that was strange as i had tiger installed and was running fine when i last used it.... but i'm upgrading the hdd to a 500gb from the 80gb that was originally in it. so wasn't worried about the folder issue as i have to reinstall the OS anyway.

but i decided to do a further test of things and found the disc drive is not ejecting the tray no matter what i tried. i shut down (holding the power button till it turned off) and restarted it a few times thinking something was glitched or stuck and would eventually work itself out and no luck.

so from what i can access, i have power as it boots to the folder screen... my USB ports work as i can use the keyboard and get into terminal, my usb mouse works as i can see the cursor moving around on the screen. so it doesn't look like anything else has a problem.

i'm not sure if i can hear the hdd spin up so i think it might be an issue with the power to the hdd and disc drive. i changed the ribbon that goes from the disc drive to the disc drive to the motherboard and that didn't seem to work.... so would it be a bad power connection ? if so i guess it would be impossible to install an OS doing the USB stick trick ?

i haven't tried installing from an external drive yet as i only just thought about that method... i'm not concerned about the disc drive as once i get the OS back up and running i won't be using it as i have a massive external drive i will be backing up to and reading from. my main concern is just getting the OS on the new drive and back up and running.

are there any people on here that have had this same issue and was able to find the solution or install the OS at least ?

thanks in advance for any help you can give !

MacOS

I’m running 10.13.6 for the simple reason it runs APFS. And honestly, I think I should’ve stuck with 10.12 running a real MacOS: MacOS Extended (Journaled). Trade monopoly rules may just make that happen for consumer protection.

It will be a matter of time before I switch to a 16” MBP, the kind with a stupid touchbar & no effing ports (unless they give it a serious rethink, though I have my doubts). We real Mac people don’t care much about thinner & lighter (that’s just greedy), we want user-upgradeable, functional Macs.

Now, there’s no doubt the Unix-based OS X was a great improvement for stability and compatibility over OS 9. But there is no way I want to switch to FrankenOS. We’re okay with being fenced-in by the Apple ecosystem but they have no need to tighten the noose.

I have Notifications shut permanently off (do you really need to know any of that nonsense in real time?!?), made my iPhone 5c stupid (who wants to read the Internet on a postage stamp!?!), will NEVER adopt the Internet of Things, and have no interest in convergence. And Siri can take a hike! I don’t want iOS, padOS (even every month), watchOS. All these are just scams to part us from our money with shinier expensive kit.

I want a real Mac OS which works like a Mac! IMNHO, ideally, I’d like my Mac OS to run 32-bit and even PowerPC applications. I run a lot of GREAT legacy apps. Unfortunately, the new crew is running Apple into the ground. No vision since Steve Jobs.

I want my files to sit right where I put them, not some virtual alias. So NO Mojave, Catalina, Big Sur—HA!

I’ll probably wait to buy until MBPs come with a second iteration of ARM processors. I’m not the early adopter type unless my present MBP dies. But I sure miss my dead 17-inch. Size matters!

My question is, any guesses as to how long I can keep running Sierra or High Sierra on the newest Macs???

TIA!

make a .jsx script from a text file for Indesign?

When hunting around for a solution to make life a bit easier with a specific job I came across someone who wrote a script that should do exactly what I need. The problem is I have no idea how to make this script into a .jsx file that will work in Indesign.

I am using the latest version of Indesign CC.

I copied and pasted the info from the website into textedit. I then saved as an RTF as txt is not an option. I then changed the extension to .jsx and put it in the appropriate folder. Indesign shows it but it is greyed out. I am assuming I have done something wrong here. Is there a correct way I should be making a .jsx file on a Mac?

This is the script I want:

(function () {
var curDoc = app.activeDocument,
allPages = curDoc.pages,
nPages = allPages.length,
curPage,
i,p,
newMaster = curDoc.masterSpreads.itemByName("B-Masterpage");

for (i = nPages-1; i >= 0; i--) {
curPage = allPages[i];
p = curDoc.pages.add({appliedMaster: newMaster});
p.move(LocationOptions.AFTER, curPage);
}
}) ();

Did this exist or am I imagining things?

This is specific to Macs that have more than one user account.

Was there ever a feature whereby when I install some software, the system used to ask whether you wanted to install this software only for the current user or for all users? Or am I merely imagining something that never existed?

If it did exist, I wonder why Apple would remove this feature. There are times when I want to install something only on my wife's account and not on all accounts.

Just for informaton, both user accounts are Admin-level accounts.

However, I did try creating a Standard )non-admin) account and when I wanted o install something it still asked for the Admin-level user password - meaning, it was installing for "all users" and not just this one user.

Any thoughts?

Cheers

use stacks and sort by name?

So I upgraded to Mojave the other day. Was looking forward to using stacks as I work a lot off my desktop for active jobs. Everything looked good except that when using stacks with kind, all the folders I have in my desktop are no longer in alphabetical order. I see no option for that in "sort stacks by...". Am I missing something here? Or is this an oversight on Apples part? Currently I sort by kind, which automatically does alphabetically as well.

get rid of Apple update marker in dock?

So I upgraded to Mojave today on my 5K iMac. I like a few of the new features and the fact that system updates are not in the app store anymore. That being said it seems I have a constant "1" on system preferences as it tries to notify me that there is an update. The update it is showing is for Catalina and I am not upgrading to that. Is there a way to ignore and not show the update on the icon for the Catalina?

RIP Hugh Downs

"Hugh Downs has died at 99. The broadcaster was one of the most durable and versatile personalities on TV.

A mainstay of American TV-watching rituals for generations, Hugh Downs for years held the world record for most time on air — more than 10,000 hours — before Regis Philbin surpassed him in 2004. Viewers knew him from "The Tonight Show," "Today," and "20/20," which he co-hosted with Barbara Walters."

From the Newton to the Avro Arrow

Folks in ehMac may remember the Love Notes to Newton documentary created by a fellow named Noah Leon. He did a fabulous job, great reviews, and the film has been seen all over the world.

Noah's moving on to his next project, which may be of interest to some:
Chasing Arrows: Recreating the Avro Arrow

At Springbank airport in Calgary, a small group of dedicated volunteers work to recreate a national legend, the Avro Arrow–Canada’s greatest aircraft that never was, and that maybe you've never heard of.

* * *

A group of hobbyists in Calgary, Alberta decided is inspired to design and build an exact replica of the Arrow, although 60% of its size, the maximum size allowable by Canadian law. Based on original blueprints and collected documents, the Arrow II is being constructed from advanced materials in a hangar at the Springbank airport in Calgary.

Even more incredible than the actual plane, is the dedication of the volunteers who are creating it. This is a project unlike any hobbyist has ever taken on. The home-built aircraft is more advanced and faster than many civilian planes. To the volunteers recreating it, it is a joy to try and right a historical wrong. It is an attempt to re-live and rediscover one of our proudest moments, a golden age when Canada led the aerospace industry and briefly had the most technologically advanced airplane in the world.

* * *

This film will be released in two parts. Version I will be released at the end of 2021, documenting the difficult journey of making this aircraft. Version II will be released when the Arrow II finally takes flight, and completes the saga. We will have a very limited festival run, because we want to get the film to you as soon as it's done. We plan to screen the film at participating locations (museums) across the country, pending agreements. It will be a great opportunity to meet other Arrow-heads and celebrate this great plane and the people who built it. The film will also be offered to be screened in participating schools, as part of their history program–the goal being to remind and educate Canadians about this great achievement.
