Reputable Apple Affiliates in Barrie or Toronto

Hi, was thinking of upgrading my HD and RAM and was wondering if anyone could point me in the direction of a reputable after sales support place in either Barrie or Toronto. I've got a Macbook Pro that was build in early 2011. Currently has 320 GB HD. 4GB RAM.

I found a place in Toronto (Yonge and Lawrence area) that wanted $229 for a 1 TB HD and another $90 for the RAM upgrade. Places I called in Barrie wanted almost $500 just for the HD. Not sure if that price is outrageous or the place in Toronto is even trustworthy. I called the place in T.O today and the guy sounded very knowledgable and friendly, but, I'm just nervous about dealing with businesses I don't know anything about.

Thanks in advance.

PNY Storage Edge 128GB Flash storage

I sold my recent MBPro 13 which had a 512SSD and in place of a superdrive I had a 7200RPM 500GB..

My new machine is the retina 13" MacBook Pro.. with a 512SSD but no room to add a second drive.. knowing I need extra space.. I bought a PNY StorEdge 128GB SDXC - reformatted to Mac hfs and GUID.. works like a charm and I leave it inserted all the time..

Now I can organize my files from essential, non essential - which would be on the SD..

it is pretty fast rated at 90/MBs not blistering but better than toting another external usb3 drive around ..

I paid about $141 - slight premium but I am happy with the results..

I would of bought a 1TB SSD, unfortunately was not offered by apple or OWC..

Belkin WeMo Home Automation - review

In the efforts of being fully automated.. I have the HoneyWell Tuxedo [zwave controller-alarm system ] with house lights/door lock control fully automated features like programing options [lock&unlock from your iPhone or type in your code in door and lights turn on and engage or disengage alarm ].. works amazingly.. somewhat expensive, but the pro is you can control it from your iDevice, Web Console and Panel in the home. Plus the z Wave creates a mesh which helps the signal through your home. The Negative is you have to have a monthly fee for portal/monitoring part of your alarm. $25/monthly. Still better than rogers and cheaper not to mention has GSM back up line cut feature.

So I figured i would do the rest of the house by Belkin the have Wifi light switches and power plug remote switches.. no monthly fee, as long as Belkin stays in businesses. :D as it feeds of their servers..

The Good.. The light switches work as advertised Remotely and Locally turn on / off your room light by iPhone or on a rule/pre programed event..

The Bad.. the plug switch : SUCKS CRAP!!!! - works for 20 mins then acts up and looses connection.. if you want a hobby of reseting it and praying when your not home if it will be available... [will be returning it for version 2 called insight.. hope its better ]

if the version 2 of Belkins plugged switch gives me the same grief I will decide to use the z wave option with my alarm system/automation..

links:

rated: Buy WeMo Light Switch | WeMo Home Automation | Home Automation | Products | Belkin USA Site

rated: run away WeMo Switch | App Enabled Accessories | Mobile Accessories | Products | Belkin USA Site

zwave options: require a controller [ alarm panel or remote base, so unless you have that already it won't be worth your time.. ]

hope this helps anyone who wanted to venture in to automation.

Converting DVD to iTunes

OK, googling and reading about Handbrake, VLC, IVI Pro and MacX DVD Converter Pro (all of which I own) have not helped, hence this post reaching out to you :)

This has nothing to do with pirated content, this is an exercise DVD given to my wife by her doctor - he made the DVD for his patients.

The DVD has multiple chapters. It works beautifully with DVD Player and VLC. I want it in iTunes so that my wife can view it on ATV or the iPad when she travels.

Whichever application I use (Handbrake, MacX DVD Converter Pro) to rip the DVD, it creates individual MP4 files for each chapter.

I know I can add all these MP4s to iTunes, but they will show up as individual movies. I need to be able to combine all those into one movie with chapter selection and then import that into iTunes.

Is there any way I can do that or am I limited to viewing each one separately?

Thanks and cheers

Is the Apple TV the best such device?

Is the Apple TV the best such device or are some of the alternate products I see advertised as good or better?

I was thinking of getting one for my wife's use for a Christmas gift.

But I was a bit surprised to learn that any Apple TV purchase today, for their Black Friday Sale, only has the "Includes a $25 Apple Store Gift Card" option.

But, better than nothing I guess, or is the $25.00 needed for extra cables etc. or something else to make it compatible and into a working device...???

Apple Airport Extreme Versus Rogers Wireless router Question

Hey All,

So I'm moving this weekend and have a question.

In my old house I have used an approx. 5 year old apple wireless time capsule with a Rogers non-wireless router (Small black box). Having visited friend's houses with updates Rogers equipment I'm assuming the Rogers technician will be giving me an updated Rogers wireless router. My questions.

1) Is the new Rogers wireless router better than a five year old apple time capsule?

2) Is the new apple extreme wireless router better than the Rogers router they give you?

and I guess finally,

Is the Apple extreme wireless router better — for 200 — than the multitude of wireless routers on the market at your local future shop. Usually I'm okay about paying a premium for Apple products (ie. laptop) but is there really a difference when it comes to routers?

Thanks,

Daniel

Only Gift Cards?

Ok, its better than nothing but only gift cards (for the apple store) for Black Friday Sale?

I'm getting a bit of a bad taste from Apple with all their seemingly greedy tactics in keeping their shareholders happy (please don't flame me, I know its all about great marketing)... Really? the richest company in the world can't let their customers save some money to spend at some other location?... no, it rubs me a bit the wrong way (as much of an Apple fan I am). Now this is just my own opinion, and not intending to sway any one else, but does anyone have the same thoughts.

Question on closing the house for a month in Winter

My wife and I will be away for a whole month in December, and I am worried about frozen pipes etc.

I live in Burlington ON in a townhouse. The heat will be on while we are away, set at around 23-25 degrees.

Some people told me that I should shut the water mains and drain the pipes by flushing all toilets and opening all taps until nothing comes out.

Some others told me not to do that, but to leave a tap running.

However, the "Shut the mains and drain everything" group tells me not to leave one tap running because that will surely get the pipes frozen etc. Plus, I am also not too happy with wasting so much water.

I am confused. Can more experienced people here throw some light on what I am supposed to do please?

Thanks and cheers

iTunes and iOS7 on iPad mini frustrations

So, because I needed to take my iPad in for repairs, I had no choice but to update to iOS7 effectively removing my jailbreak. Now, I'm trying to re-sync my apps and my music, but iTunes is giving me NO ENDS of headaches.

iTunes REFUSES to completely sync my playlists, always "cancelling snyc" in the middle of the update, and it also KEEPS REINSTALLING APPS I'VE REMOVED!

I am SO hating iOS7 right now, and the butt-ugly and "zoomy" interface doesn't help.

I'm using Gmail IMAP but I also keep lots of Local folders on my Mac for access. When doing the Clean Install, is it best to fire up Mail so that the typical stuff can be produced and then edit my account info or drag everything over before starting Mail up? Speaking of dragging, what exactly should I drag over? I'd like this to go as seamless as possible.

commercial ventilation question

I'm hoping someone here can provide some information and point me in the right direction...

I have two large (210,000 btu) propane burners which I will be running indoors. Propane supply is from a large tank external to the building with proper gas fittings installed. Proper distance from combustible surface is maintained.

The question I have is in regards to suitable ventilation and make-up air. The indoor space is 900 square feet (30 by 30), single story with a peaked roof. What is suitable ventilation for 420,000 btu's propane and what is suitable make-up air to ensure the most efficient burn possible.

I have submitted the question to a couple of ventilation companies but have not received any response. I would like to be able to discuss the scenario with suppliers having some little amount of knowledge as a footing.

How can I correct this? If it can't be changed, how can I avoid this in future ads?

My complete iTunes library is on an external drive. I've sold the Mac mini it has been connected to and need to connect it to my Macbook. I thought I could simply (option) select the library when opening iTunes on my MB, the same as iPhoto. But apparently my iTune library file can not be found when I select the external drive.

I now have a feeling I should have backed up other files from the iTunes library on the mini before formatting it. Any way around this or do I have to import everything to a new library? I can't import everything to my MB simply due to the size of my library but I can clear off another external drive for this.

Cheers.

I've been dyed-in-the-wool Quicken for many years so when I switched to Apple I installed Parallels to keep running the Windows version. I looked at Apple alternatives for our personal accounting with investments but wasn't happy with OS alternatives and did not want to use a cloud service. Now iBank 5 is out I decided to download the trial version and give it a try alongside Quicken. Has a 30-day free trial.

Off to a great start: simply exported a QIF version from Quicken and imported that QIF file into iBank. Even the investment cost basis and history is dead on. Need to go back and do a separate export/import for the US$ account to get it in US$.

Canadian banks apparently do not support the direct download software so I will give the web download method a trial run to see how cumbersome it is.

But I see a comment on a forum from a year ago that iBank does not update Canadian securities, but Quicken does. That would be a deal-breaker.

Shopping for a new voice + data plan

Hello,

I've been a Fido customer for a while now and after my contract came to an end, they upped my bill from 55$ be4 tax to 75$ be4 with no forewarning! I was pretty pissed. The reason is that I had a retentions plan w/ 6GB data and two 10$ rebates that just ended at the end of my contract. I was planning on paying the last two months in one fell swoop when I noticed the increase. I was pissed and they accepted to reimburse me only 18 of the 40$ they overcharged me (not really an overcharge but you get what I'm saying). So, I'm pretty miffed with Fido and told them that if a customer that's been loyal to their company for 6 years isn't worth the extra 20$ to keep me happy, then I'll take my business elsewhere. The plans retentions offered me where not interesting and were all 60$ + for 1GB of data (instead of the 6 I have now).

I find that Fido 3G is deathly slow all to often. Just ridiculously slow. I'm thinking of switching to Bell. Anyway, it just seems that all the plans that are available have very little data these days. I'm still holding out, hoping for some kind of Christmas promotion so I can sign a contract and get a new iPhone since my iPhone4 is getting a little long in the tooth. I've called Telus, Rogers and Bell asking them to convince me and they just read me the plans they have right off their website so it's a waste of time, they don't seem to even care if you switch to their company or not. The Telus person actually asked me why I didn't just try and negotiate with Fido retentions, she was almost arguing that I f'ed by even calling her and should stick with Fido!

Can anyone offer me any advice? I'm no longer on contract and could go with any company but I'd like at least 2GB data a month since I use my ipad with the mobile hotspot. I'm in the province of Quebec if that makes a difference. Thanks in advance for any suggestions. Cheers

This is meant to strictly be a compliment to her Macbook. Simplicity is the key here.

Thanks for your input,

Setting Up A Mail Server In OSX Server Help

We're currently using 1and1 for our business emails but their mail servers are constantly being black listed making it extremely hard to communicate with our customers. I originally thought I'd look at adding an extra Exchange server on our PC server but then thought what about our Mac server. Anyone have experience doing this, if so, how easy is it and is it a viable solution for a business?

Comet Ison - might be spectacular - this week

A poster at JREF asked if there was a history of comets brightening as they grazed the sun.....that would be a resounding yes....

Quote:

Comet McNaught, 2007 —Discovered in August 2006 by astronomer Robert McNaught at Australia's Siding Spring Observatory, this comet evolved into a brilliant object as it swept past the sun on Jan. 12, 2007 at a distance of just 15.9 million miles (25.6 million km). According to reports received from a worldwide audience at the International Comet Quarterly, it appears that the comet reached peak brightness on Sunday, Jan. 14 at around 12 hours UT (7:00 a.m. EST, or 1200 GMT). At that time, the comet was shining at magnitude 5.1.

Some observers, such as Steve O'Meara, located at Volcano, Hawaii, observed McNaught in daylight and estimated a magnitude as high as -6, noting, "The comet appeared much brighter than Venus!"

After passing the sun, Comet McNaught developed a stupendously large, fan-shaped tail somewhat reminiscent of the Great Comet of 1744. Unfortunately for Northern Hemisphere observers, the best views of Comet McNaught were mainly from south of the equator.

and this is what I saw on the edge of the Atlantic in Hermanus SA

I was simply astounded ....and three nights of it ....no picture can capture just how enormous that tail was....

wiki image

this is perhaps the closest to what I actually saw over the ocean ( wiki image )

so yeah - when it rounds the sun THEN you can be thrilled or disappointed.....McNaught was a once in a lifetime - right time and place - we were staying right on the water and just had to walk to the beach.

Keeping my fingers crossed for another realllly big show...

Thunderbolt Display not recognized

Since upgrading to Mavericks, I have noticed a change in behaviour of my 2011 MacBook Pro 13" when connected to the Thunderbolt Display. Previously, while in clamshell mode, once the laptop went to sleep it could be revived by touching the external trackpad or wired keyboard, and the MacBook would revive and the display would activate. Now touching the trackpad appears to revive the MacBook (the pulsating light becomes solid) but the display does not activate. Unplugging the Thunderbolt cable, and reattaching it brings the screen to life, but this is a bit of a bother.

Is anyone else experiencing this, or found a solution?

For Sale Peachtree iNova - Gloss Black

Computer audio never sounded better...

What can I say about the Stereophile product of the year. Those who know Peachtree know of their dedication to quality: solid amplification, exceptional DAC's and as a headphone amp you'll have to search long and hard to find better. I'm offering for sale my 8 month old Peachtree iNova. I've only used it with my Apple iPod Touch and for that I should be slapped. As Ian Dury sang "What a Waste". Improvements in the iNova include:

- A higher resolution 32 bit DAC which resolves up to 24bit/192kHz on coax SPDIF. The USB now gives you 24bit/96kHz resolution directly from your computer.

- A new redesigned preamp with a Russian 6N1P tube buffer gives the iNova a greater sense of three-dimensional sound and a more detailed soundstage.

- The amp was fitted with upgraded capacitors making the iNova more dynamic and punchier in the bass region.

- The iPod dock allows you to experience PURE DIGITAL sound from your iPod. Digital music sounds like never before!

My iNova is still under warranty so you can buy with confidence.

Details here:

Macbook Air screen problem?

Hi everyone, I have a 2013 Macbook Air which I bought just a couple of months ago and there is this one problem I came across and was wondering if anyone would know why it might be happening?

So basically, this is the second time it has happened this week. Whenever I keep my MBA idle the screen shuts off and the computer goes to sleep mode. Usually the screen turns right back on when I press a key, but recently it just so happened when I pressed the key, I see nothing on the screen at all.. and the only way to turn on the computer is to hold the power button and reboot the computer..

I realize it only happened twice so far, but I was wondering if anyone would know what the problem might be?

Anybody else with iTunes in the Cloud issues?

Note, this is not about iTunes Match.

With iTunes in the Cloud, you are supposed to be able to redownload previously purchased iTunes Store content.

Some of my TV shows have gone AWOL from iTunes in the Cloud. I do have copies in my master library so it's not a huge deal, but I'm nevertheless irked.

I'm having trouble getting straight answers from Apple on this, but in the end I expect them to fall back on "the content has been modified since you purchased it" and that strikes me as a big time cop-out. It basically means they can remove anything from iTunes in the Cloud at any time for any reason or no reason.

If so, I don't see the point of this feature, since you always have to be prepared and keep a local copy of anything you might want to access again.

I wondered how many people still used iWeb, and if there was a way to force it to integrated graphics to not kill battery life as fast.

Apple ID

Hi, for many years now I have an Apple ID and in those days it had to be an e-mail address. I had only one e-mail address and it was associated to my internet carrier, Vidéotron. I recently contemplated changing carrier so I tought my videotron e-mail address would become invalid. So I changed my Apple ID to a gmail address so that it would be no more associated to a carrier.

SUPPRISE!!!

A few days ago I wanted to get rid of adds on an application I've had for years. So for 99 cents I tried to get the upgrade but I was told that it's impossible because my original application was purchased on another ID…

Well! Well! I tought that in changing Apple ID, all my purchased apps, music etc would now be associated to my new ID… I guess I was very wrong...

So I decided to return to my original ID. In doing so I'm told that I cannot create an Apple ID that was already used… So all my purchases do not belong to me anymore…

I want to purchase a new iPad Air next week.. I'm not certain I will be able to transfer all my apps etc to my new pad!!!

Can anyone please help me out?

Positive Airflow Furnace

Am looking at a new furnace. No need to retro.

What I would really like is a unit that has a very small secondary burner, that would preheat fresh air being forced into the house without the need to kick in the entire furnace.

This would allow a positive pressure. Any airleaks would see warm air pushed out rather than cold air pulled in. Kitchen and bathroom vents could then serve as stale air exhaust without pulling cold air into the house. Also should pretty much eliminate smoke getting into the room when opening the door on the fireplace.

The concept is similar to heat air exchange except that those units pull fresh air in as stale air is forced out.

Any ideas. Unfortunately we really only have a couple of furnace guys locally, the one promises to phone back later and never does. The other is incapable of thinking outside the box.

Mail filters have stopped working

I "upgraded" a computer from OS 10.6.8 to OS 10.9 and, among other things, the filters in Mail have stopped working properly. Incoming mail is filtered properly, but when I try to manually filter the emails in the Sent folder, by selecting one message or all of them, then going to Apply Rules in the Message menu, nothing happens. Yet this action used to sort and move the selected emails according to the rules I have created.

Mail Version 7.0 (1822)

OS 10.9

I have tried the option of Rebuild in the Mailbox menu, and quitting and re-starting Mail.

I have tried creating a new filter rule, and quitting and restarting.

To no avail.

Does anyone have any idea about how I can fix this new but broken setup?

Disk Utility Report on SSD

Decided to boot off a recent Clone on my external FW drive and run Disk Utility Verify Disk on my Main SSD on my MBP. I was a bit surprised at the errors in came up with that needed fixing:

Volume bitmap needs minor repair for orphaned blocks.

Invalid volume free block count. Should be 68418697 instead of 68377842.

The Volume ____ was found corrupt and needs to be repaired.

I ran the repair and got:

Volume was repaired successfully.

Updating boot support partition for the volume as required.

I guess it's been some time since I checked with Disk Utility from another boot drive.

But I'm wondering now if Disk Utility is meant to accurately check and repair SSDs.

And then, running Disk Warrior at the same time reported that 41% was out of order. Alsoft says it's safe to run DW on an SSD but other places say no way.

I'm a bit skeptical, curious and a bit shaken concerning my expensive SSD. Any need to be?

Permissions problem

I've recently switched to Plex to look after my media files on my DLink DNS 325 NAS server. Plex scans regularly, as it should, and picks up most new files as they are added to the NAS.

I say most - but not all media files are added. For some reason, it won't pick up all files, even though they were all created with the same software and all are MP4 files.

I've asked about this previously on here, and somebody suggested that it could be connected with File Permissions.

So I checked that, and found something strange. The 2 WD Red 1TB drives in my NAS are mounted properly, but when I check them in "Get Info", I see that they are set to "Custom Access" with an "(Unknown)" owner.

When I try to "Choose New Owner" for them, I can see no existing names (i.e. there's no drop down), and the name I use to mount them tells me "The operation can’t be completed because you don’t have the necessary permission."

If I use the User Name I have on the machine - it's an Admin account - I'm told "The name you entered isn’t valid."

Is it normal to not have an owner for NAS drives? Shouldn't I be able to give them an owner name?

And finally, does this all matter anyway? As I said, Plex doesn't pick everything up - but is that for some other reason, or is it linked to this Permissions problem.

Anybody have any suggestions - all welcome!

Walt

What tools do you use/find indispensable in the outdoors?

Personally at least 2 good knives, a small hatchet, a good sharp axe, and a small/medium sized Bow saw. I find these tools essential for cutting stuff that you are likely going to need to cut in the outdoors, depending on what you are going to be doing.

Obviously there are many other things and some may not feel these items are not essential at all.

But what do you find essential? Not just nice to have, but essential.

For Sale PRICE CHECK - iPad2, Wifi+3G, 64gig, with Apple cover

Hello,

I am thinking of selling my iPad2 and getting an iPad Air for my wife. I know price-policing is a no-no here, but I am specifically asking for it here.

Specs:

iPad 2, 64 gigs, WiFi + 3G. Comes with the Grey Apple cover (the magnetic one that folds into a triangle). The cover is not the leather one, it's the other one.

I have all the original packing material it came in too, if that is of any value.

Condition - no scratches or any kind of visible damage anywhere, works perfectly, and has not been anywhere near water or any other liquid or vapour.

OS - iOS 7, but I do not know what will happen to that when I restore it and prepare it for sale.

Mac2Sell gave me a figure of $360 (without the cover). I checked Apple Refurbished for any indication, but they have no iPad2s for sale there, hence my post here.

Also, finally, considering all the newer models out there, would anyone here even consider buying a used iPad2?

Thanks and cheers

recovering files from wastebasket

Here's what I did.

I was going through a folder on my desktop and noticed a file that seemed empty. Clicked on it and up came "Hp photosmart studio" with what appeared to be copies of all the folders on my desktop. So I garbaged them. Back to a curiously empty desktop. Not good. Not a disaster for I had followed the advice here and made Carbon Copy Clone backups of both our macbooks (OS 10.4 and OS10.6), but not good. Time had passed since the backups.

So how to recover. I followed a thread here and as a result downloaded File Salvage to begin the recovery.

2 questions though. Why were those folders in a non-mac application in the first place and how do I get File Salvage from this computer (10.6) to the one with the deleted files (10.4)?

What have I done?

My iPad running iOS 7 has been running well. Then abruptly ALL videos are lacking their dialogue tracks. Sound effects and theme music are there, so sound is functioning. But dialogue is missing. Actors on screen are seen moving their lips soundlessly.

Since this phenomena is happening universally but wasn't before, my guess is something has changed in the Settings app. But what? Can't spot it. Know how to turn the dialogue track back on?

Appreciated.

TenFourFox so far so good

I have an old G4 desktop and Safari had been so slow, like molasses in January. I downloaded Firefox but it is so old that some stuff doesnt work well, and it cant be updated. Someone here suggested I try TenFourFox which I hadnt heard of. Got it downloaded and installed and so far so good :D

It uses all of my Firefox bookmarks and the error msgs I had seen on facebook and other pages that I go to a lot are gone :) I'm no expert on this browser by any means but it is current and there's a new release coming out in Dec. So hopefully this will work for me too.

Just thought I'd pass along this info and if anyone has any comments, good or bad, please send them! I know I need a newer computer but it's not in the cards right now.

Thanks for all of the help I've received here over the years!

Monitor Questions

I need to downsize. Currently I use a Sharp LC-37D90U LCD television for doing video transfers and I have an Apple Thunderbolt display to use with my late 2011 15" Macbook Pro.

I'm wondering if I could buy the Dell U3014 and eliminate the need to have two monitors. Video transfers are done with a Panasonic DVD recorder with an HDMI output and for computer video I use the Thunderbolt output on my MBP.

The Dell 3014 has both a Mini Display input and HDMI. So when I need to transfer video I could flip the monitor input to HDMI, set the monitor for Mini Display for use with the computer?

Is thunderbolt output on a MBP compatible with mini-display input on a Dell monitor? That's really the only part I'm unsure of. I could use the extra space for something other than a LCD tv.

Here's the link to the Dell monitor.

Networked HDs (other than Time Capsule) for Time Machine?

I'm trying to use a Seagate Central hooked up to my bell fibe router with Time Machine.

Everything is connected fine. Time Machine can see it, but I get "Error 17" when I try to have time machine back it up.

Any suggestions?

Should I just get a Time Capsule for this? I'm trying to avoid dropping $400 for a 3TB drive. Thoughts?

Firefox 3.6.28 questions

Yup it's an old version but it's working better on my old G4 than Safari was which was bogging down so much it made me crazy.

So, how do I delete bookmarks on this version of Firefox that I dont want? The help isnt telling me that, googling isnt either. Unless I am missing it somewhere.

It's not as easy to use, at least so far, as you cant use the Command key and a # to go to the site you want. Or is there a quick way to get to various webpages?

I've figured out some stuff but the ability to delete unwanted bookmarks is my chief complaint at the moment.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks,

Trade-in iPad 2 (or newer) and get $200 gift card

In both my local (Calgary) Best Buy and Future Shop flyers this week, there's a $200 trade-in offer. The Best Buy offer reads: "Trade up to iPad Air today and save $200 or more. Get a minimum $200 Best Buy gift card when you trade in your working iPad 2 or later model and use it to purchase iPad Air."

The fine print directs folks to bestbuy.ca/tradein

Note: You may be able to get a better price through craigslist, kijiji or eBay.

Duplicate post? My apologies. I've been an infrequent visitor.

Apple quietly released it late last night. So if you want to order, I'd get my order in ASAP - supplies are supposed to be constrained.

They also have a "reserve and pick up in store" option available this time, but it currently doesn't work for any stores I try:

first responder knife question for first responders

Looking to get my brother a first responder knife for christmas, he is a police officer. He was asking for this one:

Smith and Wesson

http://www.canadiantire.ca/en/pdp/sm...l#.UoEFs6UjiTM

I have been doing some research and looking around to get the best knife I can in this category. A knife that appears to be more versatile and well review is this Gerber knife. I know the company, they are well known for solid well built knives:

The blade is slightly bigger, but seems to have some added features over the Smith and Wesson.

Any thoughts would be appreciated from first responders out there on these knives, or other suggestions of a good knife. Money is not really an issue.

thanks

Philippines: "10,000 Dead"

Philippines reels from catastrophe as Typhoon Haiyan hits Vietnam

As the Philippines faced a long, grim path to recovery in the wake of Typhoon Haiyan, the storm plowed into northeastern Vietnam early Monday, packing powerful winds and forcing hundreds of thousands to evacuate.

Philippine authorities warned that the typhoon may have killed thousands there, leaving behind a trail of devastation on a scale they'd never seen before.

No electricity. No food. No water. Houses and buildings leveled. Bodies scattered on the streets. Hospitals overrun with patients. Medical supplies running out.

And a death toll that could soar.

Bell - Environmental Criminals

So I've bitched about Bell many times but this new wrinkle really has me in a twist.

So Bell won't unlock cellphones, even ones paid out. So they are saying keep using us or your phone is e-waste.

I've now encountered this too with their satellite receivers, only it's worse.

I have a Bell account with 2 receivers (a 9241 HD PVR and a SDR 4100)

Someone gave me a second 9241 and a stranger recycled a perfect 6141 at a local recyclers which I got.

Both receivers were owned outright, neither from delinquent accounts.

Can I activate either of them with Bell? No.

Why?

So when you don't want to use a receiver with Bell anymore or just on your account you have to call and remove it from your account. If you don't no one can activate it again. Never mind if you have the maximum number of receivers you are all ready allowed, activated.

Does Bell tell you to do this? No. They tell the poor schmucks who get the second hand receivers and try and activate them.

Here's the real rub. This applies to receivers on accounts where the person who previously owned it is no longer a Bell customer! So that person can't even call to remove the receiver because they no longer have a account.... but the receiver stays locked to a non-existent account!

So in essence all old receivers are e-waste!! And by old I mean any not in use.

I stayed on the line to complain, but that will I am sure go nowhere.

Anyone have any better contacts or insights on how to chase this?

I'm no Environmentalist but this is ridiculous in this day and age.

Thanks!

Ed
