iMac 27" HD Data Restore

Hi

Recently my HD died and I've had it replaced - all good!

Now for bringing the data back into the replaced HD. I've been using Time Machine to automatically back up data on an external drive, there is a back up folder with many files with time stamps. When I load time machine and try and go back to recover this data it doesn't recognize my external drive.

How do I get the data only from the external drive back onto my new drive?

It's probably very obvious to lots of you, but it's not to me.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Cheers!

Bad News For Snow Leopard Users

If you still use SL, it's time to upgrade:

Apple retires Snow Leopard from support, leaves 1 in 5 Macs vulnerable to attacks

Quote:

Computerworld - Apple on Tuesday made it clear that it will no longer patch OS X 10.6, aka Snow Leopard, when it again declined to offer a security update for the four-and-a-half-year-old operating system.

As Apple issued an update for Mavericks, or OS X 10.9, as well as for its two predecessors, Mountain Lion (10.8) and Lion (10.7), Apple had nothing for Snow Leopard or its owners yesterday.

Snow Leopard was also ignored in December, when Apple patched Safari 6 and 7 for newer editions of OS X, but did not update Safari 5.1.10, the most-current Apple browser for the OS.

Apple delivered the final security update for Snow Leopard in September 2013.

Traditionally, Apple has patched only the OS X editions designated as "n" and "n-1" -- where "n" is the newest -- and discarded support for "n-2" either before the launch of "n" or immediately after. Under that plan, Snow Leopard was "n-2" when Mountain Lion shipped in mid-2012, and by rights should have been retired around then.

But it wasn't. Instead, Apple continued to ship security updates for Snow Leopard, and with Tuesday's patches of Mountain Lion and Lion Tuesday, it now seems plain that Apple has shifted to supporting "n-2" as well as "n" and "n-1."

(In that scenario, Mavericks is now "n," Mountain Lion is "n-1" and Lion is "n-2.")

The change was probably due to Apple's accelerated development and release schedule for OS X, which now promises annual upgrades. The shorter span between editions meant that unless Apple extended its support lifecycle, Lion would have fallen off the list about two years after its July 2011 launch.

Time Machine Issues

I haven't been able to do a TM backup on either one of my external drives for quite some time now. I'm being told that TM could not complete the backup because there's not enough space available and that I need to select a larger backup disk of make the backup smaller by excluding files. The drive I'm trying to backup is a 500 GB capacity with 320 GB available. The external drives I am trying to back up to are a 700 GB partition with 66 GB available and a 450 GB partition with 73 GB available. I'm confused. I thought TM starts deleting the earliest backup to make room for the most recent backup? I know there's a way to manually delete TM backups, but shouldn't that be automatic?

2008 MBP Superdrive Issues

I have an early 2008 15" MBP that seems to be having some problems with the Superdrive.

I don't have a disk in the drive, but every so often it makes seeking sounds, sort of like when the head is zipping back and forth looking for something.

It's not under support anymore.. there's other ways of getting data around (via USB, for example), but is there some way to make that sound go away, either by fixing the Superdrive or removing it?

Thanks.

best hard drives for back ups?

Are there hard drives that are better for back ups? I seem to be having an issue lately with hard drives going bad, or at least cannot be read in the 4 bay hard drive enclosure I have. Does not seem to be limited to what I have now (Vantec HX4 Vantec ? NexStar HX4 - NST-640SU3-BK- Quad 3.5" SATA to USB 3.0 & eSATA External Hard Drive Enclosure w/ Fan) as it happened with a 4 bay hard drive dock. The hard drives just stop being able to be read.

I have been trying different solutions, switched from the external hard drive bays to the Vantec HX4 which is all internal and has a fan to help with heat. Not sure what would be causing these drives to be unreadable like this, most of the time they just sit plugged in, they are older back ups that I do not really access to often.

The hard drives are Seagates or Western Digital (black, caviar blue, green) Currently the Green is still working with no issues.

Really trying to narrow down whats causing my problems. Be it hard drives that are not meant to be used in this way, or if I am just the unluckiest man in the world getting these external devices that hate my hard drives or like to destroy them.

They have all been going through USB3 to my Retina MacBook pro running latest updates of OS X.

Any thoughts?

thunderbolt to hdmi fuzzy text?

I ordered a belkin thunderbolt to HDMI cable so I could send audio out as well as the picture to my 27" HP monitor that has built in speakers. I was using a mini display port to dvi adapter, and then plugged in an dvi to hdmi cable to my monitor.

Now the issue is the screen and text do not seem as sharp when plugged in with the thunderbolt to hdmi cable. It is scaled properly for the screen, but text is no where near as crisp and clean as the other setup I explained above, it almost looked fuzzy to my eyes.

Any reason why this would not be as good? This is on a RMBP latest updates of OS X.

External Monitor Recommendation for my Macbook Air

Hey All,

My work is about to transition me between two offices. Most of life has been spent working on my 27" iMac with a beautiful 2560x1440 display. When I work at my second office I'm hoping to bring my new macbook air. My issue is that I would like to buy an external display that runs my macbook air. Preferrably 27" and 2560x1440. Apple's option is very expensive and I'm having a hard time justifying spending almost 1000 when i just bought a laptop that costs a little more than that! Does anyone have any recommendation for a monitor that will run be around 500? Does this even exist? I can't seem to find anything only? I'm happy to go used or slightly older. Carbonation has a used samsung but that will still run me 800ish dollars plus tax.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

Daniel

iMac Optical Drive problem

Alright so I bought the "Hitachi-LG CA30N internal Blu-ray/DVD Burner" for my iMac from OWC. I had no issues installing the drive, just a really strange issue using the drive. So my problem is this, If I put any optical media in the drive (be it Blu-ray, DVD or CD) the drive does nothing. It accepts the disc but thats it. If I try to open disk utility or any other application tied to the optical drive, it'll freeze requiring me to Force Quit the specific app. Then i'll have to restart & hold the eject key to get the disc out. Heres where it gets interesting though, if i boot into the restore partition and run disc utility from there it will work fine. furthermore it works 100% under bootcamp & windows 7. so far i've tried reinstalling Mac OS X 10.9.1 twice (both times not using my time machine back up). NO GO. I've also tried Mac OS X 10.8.5 with no luck. Same issue that originally stated. I've already done 1 RMA to OWC and that hasn't helped my case. I've also talked in great length with OWC tech support and they have no idea why it's doing this. Technically the drive is 100% and works. Like i've said It works fine under Windows 7 (Bootcamp) & in the OSX Mavericks restore partition under disc utility. It just won't work in standard booted OS X. Anyone have any ideas on why this is or maybe anything I could try to get it to work?

Album Artwork

So I recently edited all my music to ensure all info was correct, such as Album, Year,Track Order, etc.

I also updated all of my music's album artwork.

I keep all my music in a 'Music' folder on my desktop, divided into sub-folders such as 'favourites', 'fun music', 'dance', etc. I don't run it through iTunes cause I often mix up my folders and it's a hassle.

The problem is that while some songs do show the artwork when I open the respective folder, others dont, meaning that the covers do not appear in my car's media centre.

example: imgur: the simple image sharer

Songs such as 'Broken Wings' have their artwork appear in my car, but songs like 'Call Me' don't, even though the album artwork appears in iTunes.

Any ideas as to what the problem is?

iPad charging brick is bricked.....

Not all is lost, I can charge the iPad through the computer.

But. I wonder if I have a bigger problem.

I've been using one of those squid-like power cords (see picture). The other day, my iPhone wouldn't charge when plugged into the usual spot. It charged fine elsewhere and when I moved the thingy to a different one of the arms, it charged fine - conclusion? That one arm not working.

Then today, the iPad which was plugged into a different arm won't charge and the brick doesn't work no matter where I plug it in. Conclusion? The brick is dead.

Now I'm thinking the whole squid extension cord is fubared, but why did it knock out my iPad brick?

No, I'm not going to experiment by plugging other things into the squid, I don't want to ruin any more stuff.

Is it possible that the wall outlet got upset and surged? Did the squid just reach it's best-by date?

I'm listening.

SSD and Mid 2010 MacBook Pro - Suitability and Performance

Hi everyone,

Trying to speed up my wife's aging laptop, which she uses the Adobe Suite on quite a lot. I'm looking at swapping out her current HD with this drive, which is $130 right now with coupon. I have a few questions:

1. Will this fit into her 15 inch, Mid 2010 MacBook Pro?

2. I'm assuming, from what I'm read, that this will greatly reduce opening times, but will it also reduce the degree to which the computer struggles with the software, or is that limited to CPU and RAM?

Thanks a bunch,

Josh.

How to retain consistent color when exporting to PDF?

Mac OSX10.6.8 InDesign CS6.

I've created a design for a flowing graphic "wave" across an office window 20 ft wide. The only colour is Pantone #301 (blue), and there are gradients from 10% to 80%.

The PC sign supplier wants a high res PDF to print on a flexible vinyl material. When I export to PDF, the colors change on my screen and go from blue to a grayish-blue tone.

1) If I don't do anything, but send the PDF, will the final output be close to what I see on my screen, or what the InDesign color palette specifies?

2) When I export to PDF, I see several options. I've tried several variations, and it does not bring the image closer to Pantone #301. What else can I do to assure I get the Pantone color?...

Here is the process and options:

- Pantone #301 is only color specified in InDesign.

- EXPORT to PDF.

- QUALITY - Press

- COMPATIBILITY - options from PDF 1.4 to 1.7. Which is the best to use?

- OUTPUT - COLOR -

Conversion to Destination... or Not?

Destination - many, many choices! Which one to use?

Profile Inclusion? Not sure what that does.

Ink Manager - It gives an option for "Spot to Process". Should I chose that?

Any help you can provide will be tremendous! We can't have the wrong color output in their window!

Also included a 2 pair of different Apple Dog Tags (OSX Panther release, and Digital Kid)

I can provide photos, but there won’t be much to see other than 30 plus white boxes with silver seals, 2 with gold seals, and 2 clear tubes.

Hybrid Laptop Drives

So I'm looking around for a new laptop drive and just recalled the the hybrid drives that had made their splash a few yrs back: the SSD / HDD mix was nice on paper for sure.

But As I look around, it seems they've all but vanished from the market. Did something happen? I took a look @ the WD Black 2. As much as it looked like the best one I've seen on paper, 120 SSD + 1G HDD, it's true (as reviews have mentioned) that it's grossly overpriced. Somewhere around $340. Added to that, the SSD benchmarks aren't the greatest.

This is for an aging lap (thought hourly use) and i'm not sure I want to sink near $400 into it. Which is also why i've shied away from SSDs. But I do need the room. I'm looking at picking up a >= 750G.

Anyone here a hybrid drive owner?

Halifax -> Ontario: Missing student

This is... unreal. A Saint Mary's University student who is studying the issue of missing aboriginal women in Canada has herself gone missing. Loretta Saunders, 26, an Inuk from Labrador, vanished last week. Cops in Ontario just picked up a couple driving her car...

Here's a Facebook page dedicated to the search for Saunders.

Loretta Saunders's car found in Harrow, Ont., 2 arrested

Ontario police have found the car of a missing Halifax woman and are now treating her disappearance as suspicious.

Halifax police said police in Harrow, Ont. arrested a 25-year-old man and a 28-year-old woman on Tuesday night for possessing a stolen vehicle.

Loretta Saunders, who is three-months pregnant, hasn’t been heard from since last Friday. Halifax Regional Police Const. Pierre Bourdages says the two suspects know Saunders.

Saunders, an Inuk from Newfoundland and Labrador, is a student at Saint Mary's University. Her thesis focuses on missing and murdered aboriginal women, making her disappearance a surreal irony for her family.

Her sister Delilah Saunders said she last contacted Loretta on Valentine’s Day via text, but the only reply she received was a brief “Hey."

Loretta is described as a white woman, five feet seven inches tall, weighing 120 pounds, with straight light brown hair.

She was driving a blue 2000 Toyota Celica with the Newfoundland and Labrador licence plate HCP 543.

DIR-868L very happy for $159 802.11AC router

I recently purchased an 802.11 AC router by dlink 868L - currently on sale at Canada Computers.

I have a dual band access point flush mount on my second floor ceiling which is 300 Rated. But I was looking to replace my old failed once airport extreme router- pushing 4 years old, which is in the basement.

I read many many reviews, the dlink dir 868L scored very well, plus for $159 you can not go wrong.. I am able to achieve 530 speeds throughout my home, which is impressive knowing I have it the basement in my Network Rack surrounded by metal and concrete..

Two reasons for my choice was 450 speeds for 2.4ghz and up to 1300 on 5ghz, also it has smart beam technology which beams the wifi direct to the node surfing. [ I have it set up as an access point only - kind like bridge mode]

compared to the apple 802.11AC - it was half price, plus offered more features..

Patrick Stewart - family, history, war...

I'm an admitted fan of Patrick Stewart... both as an actor and in his off-screen activities. His activism in recent years on the issue of domestic violence is informed in his childhood memories of an alcoholic father beating his mother.

I've just come across a fascinating and moving episode from British television ("Who do you think you are") featuring his efforts to discover who his father was and why he became the angry, violent man that Stewart met as a child when he came home from the war.

It's quite moving. I was also very interested in the (considerable) WWII material included as Stewart retraces his father's war service, and makes some quite revealing discoveries.

HIghly recommended. Full episode available on YouTube:

"no service"

Well my iPhone 5C worked great for about a week, but now I think I have a lemon. :-(

It started on Saturday, so about four days ago, that I would lose my connection and get a "no service" message. I tried all the steps suggested by Apple, including pulling the SIM card, rebooting, restoring the iPhone, go to Airport mode and back, etc.

The only thing that helped at first was pulling the SIM, but now even that's not doing anything. I haven't had any service on my iPhone all day. Meanwhile, my piece of junk Novatel Mifi 2 is getting three bars of service (I usually get one), so I know the issue isn't with the carrier.

I'm on Sasktel if that makes a difference.

Is there anything else I can try or should I attempt to get a replacement phone? :yikes:

anyone know anything about land line business phones?

We have a pretty simple setup, 4 phones in our office. 3 lines through an old phone system. I am pretty clueless about all this, but we need to replace 1 or 2 phones. If I were to buy a simple 3 line phone, theoretically should I just be able to plug in and away I go? No voice mail, call display or anything like that, just the 3 lines.

We have old Panasonic's right now and was thinking of just getting a new 3 line phone:

ExIF info (detailed)

Is there an app that will allow for a detailed look at the ExIF data?? I was hoping to see the geo tags specifically. I've seen some services online that will allow for uploads but it wasn't that detailed. I understand that the info is usually embedded now in pics but I've never seen what that actually looks like.

This is stemming from a convo I had w/ a buddy and he told me how authorities found a crook through the ExIF geo tags in his pics. I need to see what that looks like.

How did iPad erase all entire Contacts list?

My wife's iPad was acting a little wonky today while surfing Facebook, so she shut it off for a while, then rebooted.

Things seemed fine, but trying to send an email just a little while ago, she discovered her entire Contacts list has disappeared.

Seems bizarre to me. Is there some command she might have inadvertently pressed to erase the contents of her Contacts list?

If so I would suspect it would have to trigger a popup window asking "Are you sure?" etc.

Is there a way to recover her list, in view of the fact she has no hard drive backup?

In case anyone is looking for hosting today (Family Day)...

Just a heads up in case anyone is looking for hosting - Hostgator is having a one day Presidents' Day sale with 45% off instead of the usual 25% off you can find with coupons online. They've also got domain name registration at 45% off, though I've never used them for that. I have most of my clients at Hostgator now and I've had nothing but good experiences with them.

The 45% off only applies to your first invoice, so the best deal is to get the 3 years worth, as long as the website you're about to launch is something with longevity. ;)

A better way to elect a mayor

TO could learn a lesson here.

Donkey, hedgehog, mustang, wolf, cat, 6 dogs in the mix for Divide mayor

Quote:

There are 11 candidates running for the mayor of Divide. That's right, 11.

And while they're all very lovable, one is simply an ass.

And that ass, Herbie the donkey, marks the oldest candidate that Divide, the Teller County town near Cripple Creek, has had since its new election format came into play in 2010.

The 35-year-old Herbie, from Cripple Creek, joins a hedgehog, a mustang, a wolf, a cat and six dogs that will battle it out in the Teller County Regional Animal Shelter's biannual fundraiser that will determine which animal succeeds outgoing Mayor Walter the three-legged cat.

"Walter got more votes than the mayor of Woodland Park did to win," said the shelter's Nancy Adams, talking fondly about the 2012 election and the orange, fuzzy and quite plump winner, found each day lounging around the Animal Clinic of Woodland Park.

The malware "The Mask" (aka Careto) back in the wild it seems

iPhone hotspot flakiness

I just got my first iPhone (a 5C) to connect to the internet on the Sasktel network using a Wilson Sleek amplifier. Once the connection gets going, it's great (astonishingly fast), but it's hard to get it to that point and I'm trying to figure out what I'm doing wrong.

Here are the steps I take to get online in the morning:

1) turn on the iPhone

2) turn on hotspot sharing

3) turn on Airport on my MBA and select my iPhone

Most days, I get an 'connection timeout' message on my Mac. To get the connection to work, I do one or all of the following:

-turn hotspot sharing off and on

-turn cellular data on and off

-go to airport mode and back to normal mode

When I finally get the MBA to connect to the iPhone, I get about five minutes of internet, and then pages stop loading. I then have to go through the above steps or even reboot my phone to reestablish an internet connection. I don't have any trouble connecting to the iPhone at this point, just in getting an internet connection.

Once the internet connection is established (which can take up to an hour, as it has this morning), I have no trouble at all, and I'm usually using the iPhone as a hotspot for 10 to 14 hours straight.

I'm obviously doing something wrong or in the incorrect sequence, but I can't figure out what.

Another thing I've noticed is that I lose my iPhone's cellular connection to the network frequently if I don't leave the iPhone plugged in. Is that normal?

Thanks for any insight,

Rae

Camino Replacement

I finally decided I need to take the plunge and find a replacement for Camino.

More and more websites don't work correctly with Camino anymore - either a video won't play or a drop-down menu does not work or an inernal link within the website does nothing.

Up till now I have copied the URL of the page, pasted it into Chrome and went from there but that is becoming tedious.

My main criteria for a replacement browser was one that allowed a multi-line bookmark bar - it's something I use several times each day.

Chrome doesn't have one or aplug-in, so Chrome was out

Maxthon the same thing

For Safari there is some add-on ot plug-in, but it limits the number of rows to five and it's also not nearly as integrated as the one on Camino was.

I wrote the developer on that and he was quick to reply - apparently integration like on Camino was not possible in Safari as an add-on

Leaves Firefox - so I tried that tonight.

So far so good - installed a plug-in that gave me a multi-line bookmark bar. That one actually is a bit better than Camino - one choses the maximum number of rows; I picked 10, but my bookmarks use more than 10 so one ends up with a scroll bar.

Then installed a second plug-in so that firefox uses keychain to populate user name and password.

That seems to work fine as well

All the bookmarks from both the Camino bookmark menu and bookmark bar were imported in a few minutes -so far things are going well - no complaints.

And the browser is pretty fast.

"Another device is using your computer's IP address" error.

I have been getting this alert:

My network configuration is thus:

  • DSL arrives through a 2Wire (Bell) modem with the WiFi turned off (provides DHCP)

  • An Airport Extreme in Bridge Mode provides WiFi

  • An Airport Express extends the WiFi by WDS

  • A MB, a MBP-17, an iPhone 4S and a 5, and a (soon to be 2) !st gen iPad(s) connect.

Most of the time the network performs flawlessly, but occasionally this error (see above pic) occurs and the way I have been remedying it is to reboot the modem - it being the (only) source of DHCP. It seems to occur when one of the phones is woken up but that could be just serendipity.

Is there a solution to prevent this?

Can I assign a fixed 192.168.*.* IP address to each device? How?

Should (assuming I can) I assign addresses to the two routers?

Any other suggestions?

TIA ;)

? .MPG files in iTunes Movies folder...

I don't and haven't used iTunes very much but I'm told I'll be using it more with a refurb iPad 3 that's on its way.

I discovered that there are a few dozen .mpg files in my OS X 10.9.1:

Users Music/iTunes/iTunes Media/Movies folder

that don't play when clicked. All I get is: "This movie requires QuickTime, which is not supported by this version of iTunes."

Well I've got QT and Pro and the X version, but it seems that iTunes can't even play .mpg files, so the message is a bit numb to me.

Most of the mpg files are quite old (2001-2008) and probably most came as attachments with my Eudora email client.

I sure don't remember doing anything to do with iTunes with them, and I have no idea how they got there.

But does iTunes need them there for some strange reason or can I just delete them. I can't see any reason to keep them there when iTunes can't even use them.

And yes, they work and play properly when opened in QT using the Finder.

Last Mac MIni that will run Mountain Lion?

I'm debating if I should get a new Mac Mini.

I like the idea of no external power brick, plus the faster connectivity will come in handy - especially USB 3.0 since peripherals with that interface are pretty cheap compared to other interfaces.

On top of that I just noticed that Staples has a basic MacMini on sate at $499.- which is actually a few dollars less than refurb, but..........

I haven't really been keeping up to date on new Minis but it seems that the latest one was introduced more than a year ago so what Staples sells should run either Mountain Lion or Mavericks...right?

Which OS at this point would be the better choice?

Seems Mavericks still has its share of problems.

I'm currently running Snow Leopard on the last Mini that supports SL - no issues except that my hard drive is getting rather full and replacing it with a larger one looks like a major undertaking.

I have had Minis apart before but getting to the hard drive on those was somewhat involved - I assume this Mini is no different.

$499.- sounds like a pretty good deal.

Question on multi-user iMac and SuperDuper backups

Hypothetical question:

Let's say I have a 3TB iMac; and have created 2 users on it - my wife and me - with 2 TB for me and 1 TB for my wife.

Let's say I want to use SuperDuper to make a bootable backup, and then do incremental backups from then on.

1. Would SuperDuper backup both users automatically or do I have to backup each user individually?

2. What should the size of the external backup HDD be - 3TB or 1TB?

Why does my Mac lag?

Hi folks,

For several months, I've noticed that whenever I play videos, my Mac lags. It really is unbearable and I'm wondering if anyone would know why.

Replacement keys for MacBook / Pro?

My former (now wife's) MacBook (late-2008 aluminium) and my current late-2011 MacBook Pro both have seriously worn out keyboards. The W, E, R, T, A, S, D, C, I, O, N, M and left Command keys are just transparent plastic circles with black borders XX)

Anyone want to recommend a source for replacement keys? Maybe something not so plain as the original black ones? I rarely do video editing, so a Final Cut keyset, while colourful, is not going to be particularly useful to me.

Lazerwood Industries sells this kit for stick-on wooden keys ($40USD):

They have sets for multiple languages, desktops and MacBook Pro models... though I'd be wary of using these for fear of them damaging the screen on the laptop. Plus, you lose the backlight effect on the keys.

Here's a source for original key replacements, but - man - $4.95/key? Maybe I should just find a trashed MBP on eBay... I have about 15 keys that should be replaced... $75 at that shop....

iMac 24"need more advice/suggestions

The iMac 24" is being repaired and as John Clay suggested it was a pooched hard drive. With help from pm-r , I looked deeper than ever before into the Disk Utility. Genius Bar appointment verified the hard drive failure and not repairable. My camera in my Mac Mini was really helpful in taking images of information that came up on screen. Superior to written notes.

While I am waiting for the phone call to pick her up I am considering my back up choices. Many posters have in the past, suggested Carbon Copy and others. Notice there is a very inexpensive app available called Intego Backup Express which was give 41/2 stars by Tech Radar.

I have the back up hard drive for the iMac 24" for which I used Time Machine. After some of my reading today I noted complaints about Mavericks interfering with the back up of data and in some cases losing data. I had installed Mavericks on the iMac…..oh darn. Have to wait and see.

I am going to add a back up for my MacBookPro today. Something I have been thinking about for awhile and not done and better get off my duff and do it before this quietly gurgling hard drive starts growling or worse.

Suggestions for back up programs other than Time Machine and why would be very appreciated.

For Sale 13" MacBook Aluminum Unibody 2008 - $400

My wife upgraded to a new laptop so I have no need for another so it is up for sale.

This is the late 2008 Apple MacBook Aluminum Unibody laptop in almost mint condition. It spent 90% of it's time sitting on her lap in the living room so there is no real wear and tear except for some minor scuffs and one small indentation on the cover (it does not take away from the condition - just full disclosure). The MacBook has been upgraded with an SSD drive and besides keeping the battery use to a minimal it makes the MacBook smoking fast doing everything ... from boot time to program loading.

Although the 60GB SSD is smaller I found it was plenty of space for her needs (It was purchased at a premium when SSD’s were way more expensive to buy), it can be easily swapped out for a larger SSD drive or 7200PRM HDD or other at buyer’s expense.

The specifications are as follows:

• Apple MacBook Aluminum Unibody Model

• 13.3” LED Display with no dead or stuck pixels.

•*Intel Core 2 Duo @ 2.0GHz

• 4GB RAM

• 60GB Solid State Hard Drive (SSD)

• Superdrive

• standard Bluetooth, Ethernet, Wireless, SD slot and USB ports - all ports work no dead ports

• Battery is at 85% of life (744 cycles) and still keeps the laptop running for a good couple of hours on a charge

• BRAND NEW Apple charger

• Original Box, manuals and installation DVD

Full details can be seen here: MacBook "Core 2 Duo" 2.0 13" (Unibody) Specs (Late 2008 Aluminum, MB466LL/A, MacBook5,1, A1278, 2254) @ EveryMac.com

The MacBook will come fully formatted with OSX 10.9.x Mavericks, Pages, Numbers and Keynote. Pictures available on request.

I am asking $400 Pick up in Orillia or meet at a convenient midway point. I can offer shipping to ehMac members in good standing at their expense.

Home Reno Pet Peeve

I have been slowly restoring my century home in Orillia a room at a time. Over the years before we purchased it the house received a number of good upgrades (modern electrical with a breaker panel and copper and plastic plumbing and updated insulation) and a number of bad (seven layers of floor in the kitchen and bathrooms).

These I can deal with, it's a 100 year old home but the one thing that drives me absolutely crazy is every "painter" painted the door hardware and wall grates. Every door has beautiful ornate brass hinges and door mortices covered completely painted over or sloppily splattered with brush marks.

Why can't people take the time to either remove the hardware or at least mask it first ??? I mean it only takes a few extra minutes and the results are worth it.

I struggled for years to get a solution to figure out how to remove the paint but with most of them covered with a number of paint coats and with a mix between acrylic and oil (and most likely lead based) paints - standard chemical strippers didn't work - ginormous mess and way too much work. I took a sample to a sand blasting outfit, the cost would be super expensive and I would have to take every piece of hardware at once plus the downside all the pieces would look brand new and the patina would be stripped away.

For those who are interested I did find a solution that works and quick, easy and cheap to do.

Step One: get a old slow cooker (your better half may disapprove of you doing this in the good one they use for cooking)

Step Two: add your hardware and fill with water and add two tablespoon of LIQUID washing detergent

Step Three: Cook for 4-6 hours on high

Step Four: Remove hardware and scrub while hot with a old toothbrush or stiff bristle brush - the paint will peel right off with minimal effort. If the hardware cools the paint will reharden so repeat steps one to three

So far I have done five doors worth of hardware and the results are amazing - the paint is gone and the brass kept it's character and patina.

Logitech Mouse RMA delay and hassle???

Has anyone experienced any Logitech Mouse RMA delay and hassle?

I discovered that most of my mouse hassles I was experiencing with my new experience to try Mavericks was due to a goofy left button micro switch.

Without all the details, I called them on Jan 17, and the guy said they would send me a replacement and email me the tracking # etc.

No email arrived, so I called them again, and she said they were awaiting my sending them the faulty mouse or the sales slip, neither of which had been mentioned previously.

The sales slip pdf copy was emailed to them, and after a week, still no email or any other notice so I called them again.

I finally got an email, and replied to it and again a week later asking them basically WTF is happening.

It's over three weeks now so I called them again today, and once again the guy said he would have one shipped out today and I should get an email notice with tracking info etc. within 24 hours. Yeah right, we'll have to wait again I guess.

I'm just curious if this is a common Logitech RMA delay that others have experienced.

Emails vanished

Just looked @ my iCloud inbox just moments ago and GANG of my emails just vanished. I'd go as far as saying MOST of them As far as I can see, nothing previous to AUG 2013 is showing up in my inbox. Is there something I should know? Has iCloud made an arbitrary purge of my inbox w/o checking w/me?? For a moment, Mail was downloading stuff, old emails were coming up in my notifications, but I just assumed that mail was going through some process that it needed to. Now I'm wondering...

I checked another box I have and all was well there. Everything from the 2011 start date was accounted for. But my iCloud, not.

Anyone ever have this occur??

Thx.

7 Reasons Apple is More Doomed Than You Think

Food for thought as Apple enters the future without Jobs. An interesting read.

Quote:

Apple is in the news for losing its rank for a time on Wednesday as the most valuable publicly-traded U.S. stock. And now Henry Blodget — who first became famous for the gap between his bullish reports on tech stocks and his bearish emails about them — is touting seven reasons why Apple is a buy.

But I think all those reasons are wrong and the stock has further to fall.

Apple fell $23 a share — dipping below $400 on April 17. According to Bloomberg, one of its audio-chip suppliers, Cirrus Logic, produced too much inventory — which analysts concluded meant that iPhone sales could fall short of analysts’ expectations.

Vernon Essi, Jr., an analyst at Needham & Co., wrote in a research report, “We blame Apple for losing its mobility mojo. This was simply an inventory overbuild for the iPhone 5 relative to Apple’s forecast.”

But this has not stopped Henry Blodget’s Business Insider from arguing that investors should buy Apple shares. According to the SEC, in 2000, Blodget issued a very bullish analyst report while at Merrill Lynch on a company called 24/7. The next day, he wrote an email claiming the company was “a pos [piece of ****].” This helped get him banned from the securities industry.

And in the article he co-authored, The bull case for Apple: Why the stock is not as doomed as some think, Blodget cited seven reasons for touting Apple as a buy. Here’s why I think his argument does not hold water.

Mac Mini Circa 2005

New to Mac, although i do use an iPhone (Luv it). Was given an old Mac Mini by a friend. His wife couldn't figure it out. I was successful in reloading OS X 10.4 (Tiger) as his wife had it loaded in Japanese...i needed the English Version. Here's my problem, as this unit has no Airport Card, I am given the option of using the Ethernet Connection. My router is located several meters from my PC Room. Please provide me with options for connecting to my existing wireless connection. I use a laptop and PC (home built). Please don't throw stones at me for being a PC kinda guy...would seriously like to try Mac, though i don't want to put big $ into it until i have become successful with this older Mac Mini that i have. Thank you for your assistance/advice and consideration.

Alternate MagSafe Power Adapter?

I'm looking for an alternate MagSafe Power Adapter that lasts a bit longer than a year.

Tried the genuine Apple ones, also the knock offs - they both seem to be designed for a limited life.

On one the cable to the Mac was damaged so I opened the adapter to see if I could just replace the cord.

Well, it's hard enough to open the adapter case without breaking it, but the circuitry in there is all crammed together with tape isolating components so that they don't short - no wonder these things get really warm and don't last.

I now see a few vendors pedding this type of adapter - more the traditional PC packaging

I wonder if anyone has experience with that type of adapter as far as reliablity is concerned?

How to re-install OS 106 on a "Lion" Mac?

I'm looking for some recommendations by the experts here.

I have a 13-inch MacBook Pro that I bought from the Apple refurbish store - it was the last one that could run Snow Leopard (which is why I bought that model), but when I received it, it had Lion installed.

Since I needed to run SL for a number of reasons, I went through the firewire exercise to install 10.6.8 and that Mac has been running fine for more than a year.

Today that Mac just quit and won't boot up anymore - I get the Apple logo and then the spinning wheel forever.

So I plugged in an external hard drive with a backup on it and booted from that.

The backup is about a month old - my idea was to repair the disk on the MBp and go from there.

Well, I ran disk utility a few times - no dice.

Comes back with a message that disk utility can't repair the disk.

If I just boot up holding down the option key - no external plugged in, I get the recovery disk with the option to reinstall Lion which isn't really what I want.

I suppose I could try that - it would at least tell me if the problem is with the OS itself or the data - but before I do that - the question.

Is there now any other way to re-install SL other than go through the target dirk mode?

I assume a 10.6.6 or later install disk was never created.

The oldest OS that MBp will install is 10.6.6 but there is no 10.6.6 install disk as far as I know

For Sale Mac mini 2011 "Core i5" with SSD and Hard Drive

The SSD gives a big performance boost. Unless you have little data or a big wallet, replacing the hard drive with a SSD drive is not ideal. The combination of 64GB Kingston SSD for System and Application files and the standard 500GB hard drive for the rest works great.

Of course, you can reconfigure the two drives as a single Fusion drive if you prefer that.

You can read more about this 2011 model at Mac mini "Core i5" 2.3 (Mid-2011) Specs (Mid-2011, MC815LL/A, Macmini5,1, A1347, 2442) @ EveryMac.com. In addition to the SSD, the memory is upgraded to 4GB.

Asking $525. I would prefer a local sale in Ottawa, but will consider shipping at buyer's expense.

Wanted To Buy Macbook Air

Looking for a MacBook Air with at least 4GB of RAM in good condition with a healthy battery. HD size not to important. Prefer 13" model but an 11" might also be ok. Remaining Applecare would be a good but not a deal breaker.

I am on a limited budget and shipping would be required to Montreal.

Let me know what you have.

MBP with upgraded CPU or upgraded RAM?

I am considering purchasing a current model (ie. late 2013) 13" MBP with retina display. I am hoping to purchase it at the Apple Refurb store. There are two configurations I am interested in:

MacBook Pro 13.3” Retina - Dual-Core i7 2.8Ghz

Originally released October 2013

13.3-inch (diagonal) Retina display; 2560-by-1600 resolution at 227 pixels per inch

8GB of 1600MHz DDR3L SDRAM

512GB Flash Storage1

720p FaceTime HD camera

Intel Iris Graphics

MacBook Pro 13.3” Retina - Dual-Core i5 2.6Ghz

Originally released October 2013

13.3-inch (diagonal) Retina display; 2560-by-1600 resolution at 227 pixels per inch

16GB of 1600MHz DDR3L SDRAM

512GB Flash Storage1

720p FaceTime HD camera

Intel Iris Graphics

They both cost the same ($1739). The first one has the bumped up CPU to i7 2.8GHz but "only" 8GB RAM. The second one has an i5 2.6GHz CPU but has 16GB of RAM. Just for reference, if I buy new, the bumped up CPU or the increased RAM cost the same ($200 options).

My question is if I can only get one of these upgrades (CPU or RAM but not both), which is the better upgrade and where might I see a difference when it comes to performance?

Thanks.

Samsung ML1710 printer and Mac Vs printing adobe

So - up until a few months ago - I didn't have any real problems with this setup. However, now, any pdf I want to print - only prints on about 1/2 of the paper

I cannot figure out where to change any of the printer settings - the only option I am given is for the size of the paper.

I don't think there are any updates for the printer (I have contacted them but haven't heard back)

I just wondered if anyone out there might have some suggestions as to how I can make a change

Thank you

imac toslink only sending 2 channels to receiver

Hi, I have posted and looked through apples forums and have not found an answer to this. I ended up finding this site for us fellow canadians. I have both a late 2009 iMac and a 2010 macbook that I have tried to use the toslink to get 5.1 to my Harman/Kardon receiver. When I connect it I only get 2 channels of audio, no matter what Mac I have it connected too. Other devices using the same cord and setup works fine (ps3). I have tried going to the "audio midi setup" but it will still only show Stereo 2 channels, the option for 5.1 or higher is grayed out.

Can anyone help me

Mics, MBP and Devices

With my radio work I do, mostly voice, I've been in search for a mic that will be compatible with both my MBP and my Devices (iPhone and iPad). I found 2 that I am considering- the Apogee Mic and the Blue Spark Digital. The only negative with the Apogee Mic is that there is no monitoring audio port for zero latency monitoring, which the Blue Spark Digital has, at least in its cable connection. They're both the same price.

I just did some audio testing with my iPhone built in mic and my Apple Earbud mic. There is a bit of difference but not much. The real difference I find is when plugging the Earbud mic into my MBP. The volume is much lower and the audio is not nearly as crisp as on the iPhone. What gives here? Will it be the same with a more expensive mic such as with the Apogee and the Blue?

A must watch!

Absolutely FASCINATING interview with Steve Jobs which took place over a year before the opportunity arose for him to return to Apple. Very candid and illuminating -- and most of it never seen before.

You want to know what comprised this guy to lead Apple to bring the things we have now. You gotta watch this!
