Computerworld - Apple on Tuesday made it clear that it will no longer patch OS X 10.6, aka Snow Leopard, when it again declined to offer a security update for the four-and-a-half-year-old operating system. As Apple issued an update for Mavericks, or OS X 10.9, as well as for its two predecessors, Mountain Lion (10.8) and Lion (10.7), Apple had nothing for Snow Leopard or its owners yesterday. Snow Leopard was also ignored in December, when Apple patched Safari 6 and 7 for newer editions of OS X, but did not update Safari 5.1.10, the most-current Apple browser for the OS. Apple delivered the final security update for Snow Leopard in September 2013. Traditionally, Apple has patched only the OS X editions designated as "n" and "n-1" -- where "n" is the newest -- and discarded support for "n-2" either before the launch of "n" or immediately after. Under that plan, Snow Leopard was "n-2" when Mountain Lion shipped in mid-2012, and by rights should have been retired around then. But it wasn't. Instead, Apple continued to ship security updates for Snow Leopard, and with Tuesday's patches of Mountain Lion and Lion Tuesday, it now seems plain that Apple has shifted to supporting "n-2" as well as "n" and "n-1." (In that scenario, Mavericks is now "n," Mountain Lion is "n-1" and Lion is "n-2.") The change was probably due to Apple's accelerated development and release schedule for OS X, which now promises annual upgrades. The shorter span between editions meant that unless Apple extended its support lifecycle, Lion would have fallen off the list about two years after its July 2011 launch. |
EVES, Bill - 1937-2014 - On Saturday February the 8th Molson's stock price fell sharply on the news of Bill Eves' passing. Senior executives at Molson called an emergency meeting to brace for the impact of the anticipated drop in sales. As a highly regarded principal for 33 years with the separate school board he created many fond memories for staff, students and families. After his retirement he pursued some of his many hobbies including cooking, carpentry, gardening and sending daily joke emails to family and friends. Perhaps most important to Bill was educating people on the dangers of holding in your farts. |
Ontario police have found the car of a missing Halifax woman and are now treating her disappearance as suspicious.
Halifax police said police in Harrow, Ont. arrested a 25-year-old man and a 28-year-old woman on Tuesday night for possessing a stolen vehicle.
Loretta Saunders, who is three-months pregnant, hasn’t been heard from since last Friday. Halifax Regional Police Const. Pierre Bourdages says the two suspects know Saunders.
Saunders, an Inuk from Newfoundland and Labrador, is a student at Saint Mary's University. Her thesis focuses on missing and murdered aboriginal women, making her disappearance a surreal irony for her family.
Her sister Delilah Saunders said she last contacted Loretta on Valentine’s Day via text, but the only reply she received was a brief “Hey."
Loretta is described as a white woman, five feet seven inches tall, weighing 120 pounds, with straight light brown hair.

The 35-year-old Herbie, from Cripple Creek, joins a hedgehog, a mustang, a wolf, a cat and six dogs that will battle it out in the Teller County Regional Animal Shelter's biannual fundraiser that will determine which animal succeeds outgoing Mayor Walter the three-legged cat. "Walter got more votes than the mayor of Woodland Park did to win," said the shelter's Nancy Adams, talking fondly about the 2012 election and the orange, fuzzy and quite plump winner, found each day lounging around the Animal Clinic of Woodland Park. Apple is in the news for losing its rank for a time on Wednesday as the most valuable publicly-traded U.S. stock. And now Henry Blodget — who first became famous for the gap between his bullish reports on tech stocks and his bearish emails about them — is touting seven reasons why Apple is a buy. But I think all those reasons are wrong and the stock has further to fall. Apple fell $23 a share — dipping below $400 on April 17. According to Bloomberg, one of its audio-chip suppliers, Cirrus Logic, produced too much inventory — which analysts concluded meant that iPhone sales could fall short of analysts’ expectations. Vernon Essi, Jr., an analyst at Needham & Co., wrote in a research report, “We blame Apple for losing its mobility mojo. This was simply an inventory overbuild for the iPhone 5 relative to Apple’s forecast.” But this has not stopped Henry Blodget’s Business Insider from arguing that investors should buy Apple shares. According to the SEC, in 2000, Blodget issued a very bullish analyst report while at Merrill Lynch on a company called 24/7. The next day, he wrote an email claiming the company was “a pos [piece of ****].” This helped get him banned from the securities industry. And in the article he co-authored, The bull case for Apple: Why the stock is not as doomed as some think, Blodget cited seven reasons for touting Apple as a buy.
