MacBook Air speaker problem

It seems that I have a bad speaker on my MacBook Air. It's like in the olden days when somebody didn't have the radio right on the station.

I *think* I'm still within the one year warranty, so where do I find the serial number?

LED Flashlights?

So I recently picked up an LED headlight. Very bright beam from 5 LED bulbs, adequate for camping or night biking. Five bulbs, claims to be good for 17 hours battery life (3 alkaline AAAs) on the bright setting. My other LED flashlights are not as bright and I would guess they are good for 2 hours on a set of AAA HD batteries.

To me once the light dims noticeably that is it for the batteries. So is that battery life claim gross exaggeration or is there really that much more power stored in alkaline batteries? Are they simply referring to the time until the light fades completely to black? A snowballs chance in parliament the claim is accurate?

Pages biz card problem

Hi,

Just got a Mac Mini with the newest version of Pages on it. Trying to make new biz cards but ran into this problem: The space between my name and my address on the next line is too big. I can't make the gap smaller like I could do in the previous version of Pages where there was an option, probably in Inspector, where you could narrow the gap between two or more lines of text. Anyone know how to do this in this new version 5.2? It's probably so simple! I've checked the Help and done the Search to no avail.

Thanks,

Got myself a lovely little Mac Mini the other day :D I can't find the BCC field in the Mail program. CC is there but I want the BCC for multiple recipients. I've looked in Prefs and did a Search for it, but it's not there. Or I'm looking in the wrong place. It's version 7.3.

Can anyone help?

Confused by printer and scanner drivers. What's the pecking order?

I have now had 3 (supposedly) top of the range all-in ones and each one has given me a different headache but mostly on the scanning side. These have been in turn HP, Epson and Canon so everybody looks guilty as charged...

I'll save you the details but it's always the scanner that gives problems: it's typically not seen/not connected, or worse: the scanner doesn't support Twain.

Anyway, my question is about drivers: in most cases when you install the new printer you have the choice between a bloated in-house driver (often 60+ Megs) or a Bonjour/Apple vetted driver that feels like minimum service on a transport strike day. In the case of the current Canon neither works (MX925). So what should one do? Is there a 'roadmap' for trying different drivers. If you go to the Canon page and restrict your search to OS10.9 compatible aps, you still get 2 full pages of downloads, none of which seems to be doing the job.

OK, I know it's a bit of a rant but I'm utterly confused. Why oh why did Apple stop manufacturing printers! Any thoughts?

Thanks

Warranties provided by the law

In Quebec, there are warranties provided by law. Which says that a good must be warrantied for a reasonable lifetime.

Basically, renders almost useless any extended warranties beyond 1yr manufacture's warranty.

Are there such things in other provinces? Has anybody tried to apply the law on anything?

Solar Roadways..

This would be amazing if our local and federal governments would actually want to do this..

but they are too stupid - especially our current provincial liberals..

SOLAR ROADWAYS - no more road repairs, no more potholes, no more salt, free energy, not to mention no more painting or re paving, plus it will reconfigure the roads at a push of a button..

this is such an incredible technology which is here today, but our government is too stupid to implement. Made from 100% recycled material .

installing Os X on blank hard drive in macbook pro?

I have a core 2 duo I am fixing up. I added a new 240 gig SSD to make it snappier. Now my question is how do I do a clean install of OS X without a disk? Can I run the mavericks installers on an iMac and set it to install on the MacBook pro if connected via ethernet? I do not have a USB drive that is large enough to put the OS on, and would like to do it, if possible, without buying one.

WWDC Live Stream next Monday (what's in the pipe?)

Apple Will Stream The WWDC 2014 Keynote Live On June 2

Apple will be streaming this year’s Worldwide Developers Conference keynote on June 2 at 10 AM PT (1 PM ET), the company announced today. Apple only sometimes streams live video of its special events, and never announces its intent to do so this far in advance, so this is an interesting development.

The company doesn’t say what’s going to be on the docket at the show, but it does say that it’ll be making “exciting announcements.”

Getting Out Of a Car Deal in Ontario?

I recently agreed to buy a car from a ford dealership but found out I was layed off from my job and can't buy it anymore. Everything has been done over the phone and I have not signed any binding contracts, I have not signed a single paper. The only thing I gave the salesman was my credit card to take a $2000 deposit. The dealership is telling me that I can't back out as they have already liscenced the car in my name and now they want a letterhead from the company saying i am actually layed off. Do I have to give them this by law and if I never signed anything, isn't my right to leave the deal although I might not get my deposit back?

Last night I noticed that my iMac was coming out of sleep by itself. Then I noticed that one Numbers file was highlighted but I hadn't clicked to highlight it. Then the links at the top of the screen (Finder etc) kept opening by themselves. I have no idea what's happening. Has anyone encountered anything like this?

R.I.P. Actor Matthew Cowles

One of those actors who seemed to be "always there" but never became a "name". I've never seen his work in the soaps, nor can I put a name to a specific role he played - but I've seen that face a hundred times...

Matthew Cowles Dead: 'All My Children' Actor Dies At 69

Matthew Cowles was found dead Thursday, May 22, at the age of 69, The Hollywood Reporter confirms.

Cowles was best known for his role as Billy Clyde Tuggle on "All My Children," which he played for more than four decades, earning two daytime Emmy nominations over the course of his career. Other memorable work includes include a recurring part in HBO's "Oz" (2003) as well as a role in "Shutter Island" (2010).

As THR notes, the cause of death was not immediately available.

iMac not booting after update

I have a 21" iMac work, last model before the slim models came out. It has Mavericks installed. I ran the update for 10.9.3. When it tried restarting, it took a very long time, then said there was a problem to restart, says the same thing in a few different languages.

I started up in recovery mode and ran disk utility to repair permissions to to verify the hard drive and repair. The verify hard drive had no issues, I hit repair anyways. The permissions, well there were things that needed repairing so do that. Restarted after and the problem persists.

Anything I can do here short of restoring from a back up? The backup is about 10 days old (work computer, going through renovations the backup drive connected to the airport was disconnected).

Apple Partition vs GUID?

I realize PPC Macs need to use the Apple Partition scheme and Intel Macs the GUID one.

What happened is that I did a backup using CCC from an Intel Mini to an external FW800 drive.

The external had two partitions on it already, one was used for general storage, the other as a short term temporary backup.

The partition scheme on the external was the Apple one and I don't think I could have changed that just for the one partition I wanted to use for the backup without repartitioning the other section used for general storage which was pretty full.

So I cloned the Mini to the external section with the Apple partition scheme with the understanding (from a CC message) that the Mini may not boot from the backup.

If it hadn't booted using the backup I would have bought another drive, formatted it and backed up to that, but it did boot fine and I have been using the back up for a few days now.

So now I have the Mini internal hard drive (GUID) with data that is a few days old and the external (Apple partition) which is up-to-date as far as email etc. are concerned.

The Mini btw runs much faster on the external - I assume that either the internal had become quite fragmented over the years or there is actually a hardware problem.

I now want to erase the Mini internal drive and clone back from the external to see if that improves the Mini performance with its internal drive.

Question - Anyone know if I'm going to run into problems with booting from the Mini or otherwise since I will be cloning from a drive with the Apple partition scheme back to the GUID partition scheme?

Other option is to back up the Mini to an external drive I just bought which will be partitioned GUID and then clone back from that to the Mini; this would mean I need to recover the few days of emails, data etc.that won't be on the Mini since I did the backup.

Doable but a bit of a pain.

Bootcamp on G4?

I just bought a new Mac Mini  and it should be here tomorrow! I currently use an old G4 desktop that has served me well for many years. Nothing wrong with it, I just wanted something newer to do a few things this old beast wont do.

Where to buy replacement MacBook 3.1 battery

Hello. I've got yet another bulging battery so I've taken it out of my MacBook and I'm just running on the MagSafe adapter for now. I will probably be upgrading to a Mac mini as my main computer since my good 'ole MacBook is getting old but I'd like to have my MacBook in working order to do some computing on the road.

I've read many people complaining about batt depot and it wasn't impressed by their customer service. I don't wanna put hundreds of dollars on this old computer but would like a battery that will work.

Any success stories or recommendations? Also, when would be a good time to get a mini? Will they be refreshing their models soon?

Is anyone having problems with Dropbox?

Lately I'm having major problems with responses on my Mini running SL.

Almost every time I move or click with the mouse I get the spinning colour wheel for the longest time before something finally happens.

I checked a few things - activity monitor shows nothing unusual, hard drive is supposedly OK tested using Disk Utility linked from another Mac, memory page ins and outs are OK...

I finally decided to do a CCC clone and when I booted up the clone I denied access to Dashboard and a few other webservers that came up asking for access.

I have now been running on the "Problem Mini" since this morning but booting off the external FW800 drive and all the problems have disappeared.

Mac is as responsive as on day one.

I had suspicions previously that Dropbox was creating problems but now I'm a bit more convinced.

Tonight I will clone back from the external backup drive to the internal drive in the Mini to see if the issue is perhaps drive related after all.

iPhone 5 or 5s

In need of an iPhone, I'm debating between a 5 and 5s. The 5c is out due to a 32GB limitation. Since Apple discontinued the iPhone 5, I can't help but wonder how it will run iOS 8 (or beyond?). The 5s is quite steep for an unlocked, and I really don't want to wait until the iPhone 6 comes out for prices to drop. Any observations on the differences between the 5 and 5s and its future?

Printing label directly on CD

I am trying to print label directly onto a CD. I have 10.6.8 and using CD-LabelPrint on a Canon IP4600. I have done this successfully a few months ago, but I cannot recreate success. I follow the instructions to the letter. Here's what I am doing:

1. Hit Print. It displays a box "Print Label Sheet" From this box, I hit Print.

2. It displays a box "CD-LabelPrint" in which it tells me to:

a. select a printer that supports CD direct print. I select IP4600.

b. select a Paper Size. I select CD-R tray G (which automatically shows up).

c. select Orientation. I select Length, as suggested.

d. select Scale. I select 100%

3. When I then hit Print, I get a CD-LabelPrint error message that says the Paper Settings are not correct and to check my paper size, magnification ratio, and paper orientation. I am going around in circles.

As I said before, this has worked for me a few months ago. Nothing has changed since then other than normal Apple updates.

Any help would be appreciated.

Massive fundraising ideas?

So - down here in Nova Scotia, we have a town - either by mismanagement or ...well, we don't know, because they won't tell us - that is on the point of dissolving its charter and amalgamating with the surrounding county.

The challenges it faces are the same across all of rural Nova Scotia: aging and slowly declining population, high residential and commercial taxes, and few local industries to provide jobs. It's a former coal mining town that still maintains that identity, despite not having a working mine in decades. One of the major things weighing on the town are uncollected property taxes - seriously massive uncollected property taxes. One of the things we have not been told is what happened to the tax collection scheme and why did it go off the rails in only the last few years?

In any event, some town residents are refusing to accept the plan for amalgamation and want to think outside the box on economic development. Their first target is the town's accumulated long-term debt, which stands at $5.1-million. Get that off the books, and everything else can be sorted out.

Now, then - you've got a former mining town. Population now just under 4000 souls, a fair percentage of those seniors. There's a battery plant, a firm that produces plastic packaging / containers, bowling alley, hospital, a few tourist attractions, some federal transfers (a Federal prison is located within town limits) and - perhaps the most important resource of all - a GeoThermal resource that is already (and has for several years) provided inexpensive heating/cooling for some local businesses, with an almost unlimited potential for expansion.

So - what's the fastest way to put your hands on a cool $5-mil ?

I will paypal someone $20 if they can help me with my external HD.

I am losing my ***** here.

I'm installing a new Lacie 6TB thunderbolt drive and I think I just screwed something up when trying to set up RAID.

I'm somewhat of a newby and was rushing the process as I was grilling dinner.

My lacie 6TB comes with 2 x 3TB drives.

To keep it simple...

When I originally plugged it in, a lacie 6TB icon appeared. After I thought I formatted the HD, the Lacie 6TB drive icon disappeared and I now have 2 separate 3TB untiled drives on my desktop.

I have searched and searched and searched and have found nothing that to get this information back.

I have tried undo, disk repair and installing on another mac to see if it would restore to factory presets.

I think I'm screwed.

I just want this to act as 1 6TB drive and have 1 icon.

If you solve my problem, I will paypal you $20 immediately.

Thanks!!

Well I love the iMac I have had for last 4 years, we are getting another! The son is taking this one and we get new one! I am wondering how I can backup everything to a hard drive to transfer things over to the new computer? I would want email contacts, websites, various data, some apps etc. ..... Can time machine do this? I have no experience with it.

Also would like to reset or reformat this one for my son , so its a nice clean install. (All he needs is internet anyways).

Thanks

Jim

Venus encounter - ESA spacecraft "Venus Express"

I didn't know / remember that there's been a spacecraft orbiting Venus for the past eight years... I guess there's not so much to take pictures of, unlike Mars or Saturn. Now that spacecraft is wrapping up its tour of duty, and will take one more for the team...

Venus Express Prepares to Descend into Hell

Venus is definitely not a friendly planet for humanity. Soviet landers that arrived on the surface a few decades back were crushed pretty quickly. Its surface temperature is more than 842 degrees Fahrenheit (450 degrees Celsius) and the atmosphere is full of noxious gases.

But descending into this pressure-filled cooker is exactly what Venus Express is going to do shortly. The European Space Agency spacecraft will conclude eight years of orbital operations with an attempt to fall into the planet. The maneuvers are complicated, and there’s no guarantee they will go as planned, but ESA plans to make the plunge by the end of this year.

For the better part of a decade, Venus Express has been orbiting the planet every 24 hours, swinging in an elliptical orbit that ranges from 155 miles (250 kilometers) to 41,010 miles (66,000 kilometers). But now the spacecraft is almost out of fuel, and will now be redirected for “experimental aerobreaking” to slow down through skimming the atmosphere.

The maneuvers will take place between June 18 and July 17, where controllers hope to gain some information about the planet’s magnetic field, solar wind, temperature and pressure.

iTunes not syncing all episodes to iPad

I am running iTunes 11.1. I just bought a five-episode miniseries ("The Last Enemy", 2008) via the iTunes store and requested that iTunes sync it to my iPad 2. I have tried various ways of making the request, from selecting all episodes of all shows to selecting only that show, but only episodes 2 through 5 show up on my iPad. Episode 1 stubbornly refuses to sync. Any ideas on why and how I can fix this?

Thanks,

David Cameron's 'top-secret' visit to Canada revealed

The Privy Council Office, it seems, is working hard to protect the identity of those who visit the prime minister.

According to documents recently released under Access to Information, the name of an individual who paid an official visit to Canada in September 2011 must be withheld because it is considered "personal information."

Owing to an apparent clerical error, however, CBC News has uncovered the identity of the mystery world leader in question. One page in the batch of documents was printed in duplicate: one time with names blanked out and the other with the names readable.

The documents (included below), show the deletion was meant to be "Prime Minister Cameron," presumably referring to British Prime Minister David Cameron.

* * * *

After taking nearly two years to process the request, the Privy Council Office returned 50 pages of heavily redacted material.

Deletions include virtually all entries under the headings "Possible Controversies," "Draft Agenda" and a list of possible agenda items for a bilateral meeting.

good computer tool kit?

I do on occasion do some upgrades to some of the macs at our office and family and friends. Simple things like hard drive upgrades and ram installs. I am going to be upgrading 2 mac minis we have at our office with SSD's to give a speed bump for a minimal cost rather then replacing the computers for something faster.

Is there a good all around tool kit that is more mac specific? I have looked at some different kits and am worried they may be cheap kits. I have had some watch kits that were similarly priced with plenty of tools, but were very cheap and flimsy. Looking for a quality set that does not break the bank.

The sad final years of Casey Kasem

Casey Kasem's whereabouts probed by court

A judge on Monday ordered an investigation into the whereabouts of Casey Kasem after an attorney for the ailing radio personality's wife said the former Top 40 host had been removed from Los Angeles without his children's knowledge.

Superior Court Judge Daniel S. Murphy ordered a court investigator and adult protective services to find out where Kasem is being treated and report back to the court. Kasem, 82, suffers from advanced Parkinson's disease, can no longer speak and has been in various medical facilities chosen by his wife, Jean Kasem.

Casey Kasem's children have complained that they have been unable to see their father in accordance with an agreement with their stepmother. Daughter Kerri Kasem had sought a temporary conservatorship and was appointed her father's temporary caretaker on Monday. Her attorney, Troy Martin, said the family believes the entertainer has been taken to an Indian reservation in Washington state.

Murphy's order came after Craig Marcus, an attorney who appeared on Jean Kasem's behalf at Monday's hearing, said he did not know where the radio personality was but that he was "no longer in the United States."

The revelation brought stunned protests from Murphy and two of Casey Kasem's daughters, two of the entertainer's three children from a previous marriage.

"I have no idea where he is," Marcus said.

"Your statements concern me even more," the judge told Marcus

Monitor suggestion?

We are renovating at our office (family print shop) as we prepare for some a new digital press coming in end of this week. I purchased a workstation on wheels that has a mount to hang an LCD screen. The screens I had did not work save for a small 15" screen. The issue with the others was the stands always got in the way. The small one that did work only works because of the design, the stand is still there just not in the way.

I am looking for a screen up to 20" max that has a removable stand to hang on this unit. It does not need to be colour accurate or anything like that. Looking for something cheap that works.

Anyone have any suggestions?

R.I.P. Nash the Slash (FM)

Bandaged rock violinist Nash the Slash, a.k.a. Jeff Plewman, dead at 6 6

Jeff Plewman, the Toronto electric violinist and experimental musician who performed as Nash the Slash with his face enveloped in surgical bandages, has died. He was 66.

His death was announced on Facebook by friend and collaborator Robert Vanderhorst, who wrote that Plewman passed away over the weekend. Vanderhorst also confirmed the death in an interview with the Toronto Star.

Plewman co-founded the progressive-rock band FM, who issued their debut “Black Noise” in 1977, and quickly established a long career as an eccentric solo artist whose compositions were nominally new wave but really, impossible to classify in a tidy fashion.

He was secretive about his identity, performing with a tuxedo, top hat and sunglasses as well as the rags on his face, and he was evasive when asked in interviews for his real name.

* * * *

“When he performed … you couldn’t even grasp how he was doing it. He would play a couple riffs on his electric mandolin and he would create a loop for it — and people back then didn’t even know what a loop was.

“It sounded like this huge band and it was this guy sitting there in a tuxedo and a top hat, you know?”

* * * *

Plewman announced his retirement from music in 2012, writing on his website that it was “time to roll up the bandages.” In a long posting, he wrote that he “refused to be slick and artificial,” and noted his pride in a “remarkable 40-year career in the music biz with no hit (commercial) records.”

* * * *

By way of explaining his retirement, he wrote about the way file-sharing had “devastated” an important source of income, .... “He was very fed up with how easy it was for people to access his music and not get paid for it.”

Perhaps my favourite track from Nash and FM:

Day of Honour

At first I was skeptical of going, plus as I have become older I really don't like crowds.

At first all I wanted to do was see the Parade and fly by... the fun stuff but even at that I only wanted to watch it on TV... then we talked about watching it from a window and then we agreed we would just go outside and watch it from the front of the building and see both the Parade and flyby.

And so my colleague and I took the elevator down to the ground floor at about 11:30am and went outside.

There were so many people streaming up on to the Hill and there seemed to be an energy about it and so my colleague said, "C'mon let's go to the Hill" and so we did.

Walking up to the Hill was an experience unto itself, some people reconnecting, some people practising getting their marching legs, some people stopping and embracing people that they seemed not to have seen in a long time, while others that seemed to be their neighbours.

Because we were so early my colleague and I found a great spot to see the parade and view the jumbo-trons of the event.

The ceremonies themselves went off generally very well, in my and my colleagues opinion the speeches should have come before the 2 minute silence broken by the flyby and the flyby should have ended the ceremony it would have been more poignant that way, but hey... they don't consult artists about such things and not everyone is as smart as we are. ;)

I commented to my colleague that it reminded me of the gathering that occurred in 9/11 on the Hill (which we both participated in) when there was a gathering on the Hill in sympathy and solidarity for the attack on the Trade Towers and that this was bringing things full circle.

She said she had forgotten but, yes that is right.

Interestingly enough when we got back to the office and tuned into CPAC, they said the same thing. I am glad that some others view it the same way.

I am happy my colleague said, "C'mon let's go to the Hill", and then so we did.

Lest we forget.

Mac Pro freezing issues, need help!

Alright so I have a 2009 Mac Pro 4,1 desktop with a 2.66GHz Xeon processor. I'm having this ongoing issue (for the past 2-3 weeks) where after anywhere from a minute to say 30 minutes or so the desktop completely freezes. No kernel panics, just a frozen desktop. Keyboard & mouse are both completely useless, so I have to hold down the power button on the front if the machine to shut it off. I brought it into apple and they kept it over night and ran all the tests they could through at it. When I got it back they said my boot drive (a WD 2TB 7200RPM 64mb cache) was bad, and that was why it was freezing. They told me besides that the machine is 100%. So I went out and bought a brand new Seagate 1TB 7200 RPM 64MB cache drive, installed it in bay 1 then installed OS X Mavericks and did all the updates. That fixed the problem (or so I thought), so I put my Windows Drive (bay 2), iTunes drive (bay 3), & my time machine drive (bay 4). Again all was well. Until today (little over a week since the last batch of freezes) when it started to freeze again. It never freezes for any specific reason or on any specific application.. It just randomly freezes. I've tried reinstalling mavericks at least a dozen times... No dice. I've tried different ram.. Again, didn't change anything. I even removed all my drives except my OS X boot drive (from bay 1) and that actually had it working the longest.. But in the end it froze anyways. Part of me thinks I might need to replace the Backplane Board.. I'm thinking it might be a SATA issue.. But I'm not sure enough to order the part. So if anyone with some more knowledge or experience with this sort of issue could help me out, that would be fantastic.

Thanks :)

user accts on my iMac

There are 2 user accts on my iMac - I'll try and explain this clearly.

When I sit in front of computer, up in the top right beside the eyeglass is a user name, when I select this name there is a dropdown which shows me another user, the option for the login window and the user preferences panel.

I load the users preference panel and with it unlocked I select the top user 'XXXXXXX admin' which is me and I want to keep. The second user "MMMMMM admin' I want to delete this user, but it is grayed out and won't allow me to.

The reason I want to remove this user as it was temporary user the techie put in when the HD was replaced. All my previous files have been restored on the username I want to keep. And when I reboot the computer it always opens under the wrong username.

I WANT IT GONE!!!!

R.I.P. Farley Mowat

Farley Mowat dead at 92

Farley Mowat, one of Canada's best-known authors and a noted environmentalist, has died at age 92.

Mary Shaw-Rimmington, the author's assistant, confirmed his passing to CBC News on Wednesday afternoon.

Mowat, author of dozens of works including Lost in the Barrens and Never Cry Wolf, introduced Canada to readers around the world and shared everything from his time abroad during the Second World War, to his travels in the North and his concern for the deteriorating environment.

More than 17 million copies of his books, which have been translated into dozens of languages, have been sold worldwide.

* * *

At 18, he enlisted in the army to fight in the Second World War. He spent three years overseas, serving first in Italy, then in the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany. He returned to Canada in 1945, spending summers in the Arctic and winters studying at the University of Toronto.

His first book, People of the Deer, was based on his experience in the Far North with the Inuit people and made him an immediate celebrity.

A lifelong naturalist, many of his books focus on man's relation to nature.

His 1963 book Never Cry Wolf is credited with helping to change the popular perception of wolves, even leading to a ban on wolf hunting in Russia after the book was published there.

Is this iMac repairable, or worth repairing?

My neighbour threw out an iMac machine (with the keyboard attached). I thought I would 'rescue' it. So far, it boots up, and runs, but there seems to be a problem with the screen. Is this burn-in, and is it repairable / worth repairing ... given the age of the machine?

Here are the specs that I have been able to gather so far:

IMac

2Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo

RAM: 2.5 Gb 667 Mhz DDR2 SDRAM [2 Gb in Bank 0, 512Mb in Bank 1]

HD capacity: 150 Gb (Initial OS installation, 2006)

OS/X 10.4.11

Here is a shot of the screen showing the persitent vertical lines (N.B. I am somewhat doubtful if these are indeed burn-in, as one or two of the lines tends to do a very slight, but slow flicker off and on; Could it be that these lines are some defect other than burn-in? ... the screen is still quite bright, so there seems to be still a lot of life left in it.

Kindly see:

Should I decide to keep the machine, rather than consign it to the rubbish heap, it would be mainly for the following purpose:

1) To backup / update my android phone (the manufacturer provides both windows and Mac app for this purpose

2) To download and apply any manufacturer firmware updates for various peripherals.

The machine itself has barely a scratch on it, and both the body and keyboard are clean of dust or crud.

suggestions or advice would be appreciated.

(FTW, I am located in Montréal, Canada.)

respectfully...

Same Price Smaller Packaging Consumer Rant

Dont you hate when they do this? :ptptptptp

One of the products that really disappointed me for a long time was the size of the wagon wheel snack, I remember these things being like 6 inches wide now they are the size of a chocolate chip cookie. What a disappointment that was when I went to re live that part of my childhood, how would I know what was waiting inside the box was the same size.

Recently I bought Schniders Juicy Jumbos Hot Dogs always came in a package of 6, which makes sense because buns are sold in a bag of 6. Well thank you very much cheap bastards at Schniders / Maple Leaf Foods these dirt bags recently repackaged the product so there is only 5 hotdogs in a package.

I would love to meet the man or woman who made this executive decision and serve him or her a nice dry hotdog bun (the one left over). Just boggles my mind why any company would purposely go out of their way to make a product that goes hand in hand with another incompatible.

1. Open the folder names "Process" on the Desktop. [It's here I'm lost.]

2. Open the contents with Preview. [I can do this.]

3. From Preview's File menu choose "Export." [Will record the next few steps]

4. Change the file extension from ".tiff" to ".tif".

5. Unselect the Alpha option.

6. Navigate to the "Processed" folder on the desktop.

7. Save the file. [Rinse and repeat with the rest of the files in the "Process" folder.

Anyone know a good body shop? (Toronto)

High winds on Sunday resulted in a door ding to someone else's car.

Unfortunately for me, this someone else drives a Mercedes. And used to work in a detail shop, so they are apparently quite exacting about such things. And is evidently leasing the car, so they are very concerned about returning it to the dealer in pristine condition.

(People should be so lucky as to door ding me, as I wouldn't really care.)

I have one quote from their guy which, to be honest, seems pretty okay.

But I'm thinking it's probably prudent to ask them about going to another place for a second quote.... I asked them about paintless dent repair and they seemed pretty resistant to the idea, and in any case, there seems to be a bit of a paint scrape, so it's probably not an option for a perfect restoration.

(Unfortunately for my husband, it was his door that caused the ding.)

Cannot access Twitter with Mavericks

Please help me before I tear my hair out! I can't access Twitter (btw I need it for business, not to tell the world what I had for breakfast) on my MacBook Pro (10.9.2) . I have no problem accessing the site and logging in on my old MacBook. I can't find anything on the Internet about this, but is it a Mavericks issue or a brain fart issue?

Thank you for any and all advice.

Why partition a hard drive?

Long question

Set-up:

Late 2010 iMac 27" i7, running 10.6.8, Mavericks also installed but never used.

Three existing hard drives-divided into multiple partitions;

A) 2Tb internal with Boot partition with Apps, Mavericks partition, a large iTunes partition, Raw video partition and a "overhead" ie junk file.

B) 2Tb external with partitions for cloned back-ups of Boot drives, iTunes, video, and photos

C) A WD 4Tb drive with archive of compressed copies of video files and photos

- (this is a USB 2 drive, and I feel it is slowing everything down - will become off-line storage)

And now a brand new external 4Tb G-Tech drive (firewire) - thinking/planning to partition half for iTunes, the other half for misc files and scratch disk.

I try to carefully estimate the space required for each, but they are either full or there is a percentage of space left un-used/un-useable on each partition. Re-partitioning is a pain!

Finally, my question

I'm wondering if I should remove some partitions & rely on folders to organize everything, this would permit better use of all available space.

Any comments would be appreciated

Junk and Spam Mail

Just noticed recently that all the junk and spam Mail that was originally going to my Spam folder is now going to my Junk folder(s) and I don't recollect making any changes for that to happen. The only thing I remember doing is enabling Cloud Mail. On another topic of Junk and Spam Mail, I've been also noticing that some of this type of Mail is starting to resemble either names of Contacts of places of interest that I frequent (no, not porno sites). I'm starting to wonder if someone is tracking me and if my Mac is somehow vulnerable to hacking. I just checked and found my Firewall was turned off. Not sure when I had turned it off.

Mavericks search cannot find system files?

I upgraded to OS 10.9 from OS 10.6.8 a little more than a month ago. This morning I tried to search a preference file in ~/Library/Preferences/. I had enabled the “system file” criterion in search. The search result didn’t show any preference file .plist at all.

Yet when I did the same search on my old Santa Rosa MBP running OS 10.6.8, the search result showed the exact .plist file that I looked for.

I then performed a rebuild of the Spotlight index in Mavericks. After the rebuild I did the same search again. Still no preference file listed in the search result.

Apple disallows searching system files in OS 10.9???

Mac Mini update: when????

The last Minis came out Oct. 2012...well overdue and I haven't found anything about updates still.

Does anyone know anything I don't about when the update is coming? Refurb are only $99 less than brand new, so investing in an older machine and only saving that much doesn't seem worth it!

Dead Apple Display

I have two 27" Apple displays and one of them just died. I took it in to get fixed at an Authorized Dealer and they first thought it was the logic board (which would have been cheap to replace) but after that didn't work they determined it was the panel itself. They quoted me at around $800 to buy a new one plus labour. I can buy a refurb display for $799!? Is it actually that much to buy the panel part or are they quoting me way too high?

Freebie : Powerbook G4 Titanium

Hi everyone,

Someone must know my addiction to Apple hardware, so they basically left an old Powerbook G4 (550mhz) on my desk today at work, missing a power supply but told that its functional!

I've got 2 little ones that are drooling (literally) over my MBA, so I figure they'd be able to tinker with this powerbook and won't hurt me too much.

Any hints, feedback or what not before I dive in ? I've sourced a power supply locally at a pc recycle, i'm figuring 10-15$ for one at most so I'll drop by there on Monday.

Battery is shot as well, not sure if I'll replace / invest in a replacement either

Any old kids games for 3-4 year olds that are recommended for this ppc platform?

thanks!

So TRIM got disabled on my mini after an update

Well.. I never thought much about TRIM since i installed an SSD on my 2009 macbook polycarbon.

When i bought my 2011 mini off an ehmac member, i simply moved my SSD over, and found out that TRIM could be enabled with TRIMEnabler. So I did. But after a while, my mini started slowing down, would beach ball on me upon cold boot and firefox seems very slow.

So i found out that TRIM got disabled by itself, so i re-enabled it and now everything is fine.. so weird.
