ClamXav? Still the virus detection app of choice?

Hi,

Decided it is time for my annual "virus" check on my Macs.

Well more the "Three year"check if I want to be honest.

Is ClamXav still the preferred way to go?

Looks as if there is a ClamXav 2 version out now.

Thanks for any comments.

CBC To Cut Back Supper-Hour News, In-House Productions

Quote:

Corporation will have up to 1,500 fewer employees by 2020

CBC to cut 657 jobs, will no longer compete for professional sports rights

The CBC is shifting its priorities from television and radio to digital and mobile services, a move that will reduce staff, and supper-hour news broadcasts and programs produced in-house, says CBC president and CEO Hubert T. Lacroix.

“We used to lead with television and radio. Web came and then mobility came. We are reversing, we are inverting the priorities that we have,” Lacroix said, referring to the broadcaster’s 2020 strategy. “We’re going to lead now with mobility, we’re going to lead with whatever widget you use.

"You’re going to see an investment in mobility that’s going to rise as the investment in perhaps television ... is reduced.”

Lacroix said there will be job cuts over the coming years, but they will be made in "prudent steps."

In 2020, the corporation will have 1,000 to 1,500 fewer employees. This would be in addition to the reductions announced to date.

Currently, 1,000 employees are eligible for retirement. And through attrition, about 300 leave every year, according to the broadcaster.

“The goal is that to be able to meet a financially stable and sustainable CBC/Radio-Canada, we have to reduce the infrastructures ... but we also have to reduce the number of people who are working at CBC/Radio-Canada,” Lacroix said

Certainly not unexpected given sagging viewership. Dead last of all Edmonton news stations for years now.

Mac mini + Dell monitor; unsure of connections

Hi guys,

So i'm looking to replace my mom's 17" sunflower iMac with a mac mini (latest or penultimate model) and a dell monitor.

What is throwing me is some prefer a HDMI <-> HDMI connection whist others go with the mini's TB port (mini display port?) <-> Displayport.

Is one connection advantageous/problematic over the other? Perhaps a newer imac instead?

Her uses are quite basic but she thoroughly enjoys collecting and viewing her family pics at full screen.

Many thanks

Apple Ending Development on Aperture

Apple Ending Development on Aperture as Upcoming Photos App for OS X Will Replace iPhoto - Mac Rumors

Quote:

With the introduction of the new Photos app and iCloud Photo Library, enabling you to safely store all of your photos in iCloud and access them from anywhere, there will be no new development of Aperture," said Apple in a statement provided to The Loop. "When Photos for OS X ships next year, users will be able to migrate their existing Aperture libraries to Photos for OS.

Quote:

According to TechCrunch, Apple will continue to provide compatibility updates to allow Aperture to run on OS X Yosemite, but development will stop. Apple is also working with Adobe to create a transitionary workflow to help users shift to Lightroom.

You know this sucks. But maybe I went the wrong way in the first place. Apple really makes you think about choosing any of their software for real use. I don't want to pay per month to Adobe. This is the sh$$.

The other part of this story is like I thought would happen. iPhoto will be gone and be replaced by the new Photo app.

how to get epub onto iPad?

I have a retina iPad mini, I manually manage my media on my iPad I never liked syncing things when it comes to this. All is fine and dandy till I wanted to put on a few epub files I made and am trying out. When I went into iTunes and to the books section, it shows the epub files I made in iBooks, but it is grayed out, I cannot add them. The only option I have is to select "sync books". I thought sure, I am ok with syncing books, not something I use to often as the kindle is where I do my reading. When I selected this it warns me that it will erase all my music and videos and sync the iPad from this computer. Now I do not want this. Is there anyway around this to get epub files i made into iBooks on my iPad? Both mac and iPad are running latest versions of both OS's

OUCH! my wallet hurts.. Gas Prices

We are down to 1 car, lease expired, returned the car.. Now holding off for some nice diesel products to be released.. Wife is annoyed- but I told her not purchasing another product until I see a better selection of diesel products..

If we have to wait a year - we wait..

Fiat/Chrysler seems to be my first choice, a lot of new products about to hit the market with diesel... Looked at VW but its cheaper to lease a benz LOL.

Besides I have taken the GO train a few times, very impressed - only issue is; you are married to the schedule otherwise you are doomed if you miss the train, as the GO bus is a painful alternative.. At least the GO service is affordable plus you can claim the costs of use in your taxes. :)

Question for Fido Pay-As-You-Go Users

This is a question for anybody that uses Fido daily pay-as-you-go.

I'm an occasional user of cell phones, and don't need a monthly plan. Fido has options to pay by the minute, or pay per day. One of the per day rates is $1 per day, with unlimited evening and weekend calling.

My question relates to how the per day rate is charged. I get conflicting information at different Fido outlets. Some say the $1 charge is only applied on a day you use the phone, while others say the $1 charge comes off every day, no matter if you use the phone or not.

If anyone is using the Fido $1 per day rate can you let me know how it's being billed.

Thanks mucho

iPhone Buying Advice

Hi everybody,

I am very new to this forum.

I have an iPhone 3GS and would like to upgrade now. I not decided between a brand new iPhone 4S or an used iPhone 5 or 5C. That is my current budget for now. The used model might have some battery issues soon while a new 4S might get outdated quite soon too. For $30 i could get the battery from iFixit, but nevertheless it would be nice to hear some expert opinions on that.

What would you do?

Best,

iMac buying advice

Hi gang,

I'm helping a friend with an iMac purchase and I thought I'd crowd source a response! :)

He and his wife want a larger display after being long time 15" MacBook users. They have pretty basic needs: web browsing, word processing... and DSLR photo editing. They're looking at a 21.5" iMac because of the entry price and have already decided that the new low end model probably won't fill the bill. This is where the decision gets more difficult... I've advised them that the remaining 21.5" iMacs are due to be upgraded soon so they're hanging tight waiting to see if and when they will be refreshed. But they're also deliberating about whether the basic model with built in Intel graphics will fill the bill or whether they should opt for the one with the NVIDIA graphics. I'm thinking that they'd be wise to up the RAM to 16 because they won't have that option later with the 21.5" iMac, but I'm really unsure whether the NVIDIA graphics will make any difference to them... And if they're springing for that model then we're getting to the point where buying a refurb 27" model may start to make sense because those would have NVIDIA graphics already and allow home upgrade of the RAM. What would you advise? Thanks in advance! :D

When will we know the fate of the Mac Mini?

I've been trying to find information on the date of Apple's next big press conference because I'm curious to know the fate of the Mac mini. I've read that apple might be discontinuing it altogether in favor of a more affordable iMac.

Right now, the Mac mini is the computer that has gone the longest without a revision (goin on 2 years+) so I don't think it's a particularly good buy so I was waiting for a revised model before purchasing one. So is the Mac Mini truly dead? Am I really waiting in vain? When will apple be announcing its new product lineup?

Older TV and Apple TV

We have an older TV in our lounge and occasionally we gather to watch movies. The TV is one of those monstrous flat screen ones that is about 18 inches thick.

The good news is that it works, has a built-in DVD player and nobody is going to steal it :D

We can usually find a suitable movie, but I'd like to show some of the comedy on YouTube, or movies on Netflix.

So, my question is - what do I look for on the TV to see if an Apple TV will even hook up to it?

strange issue, app opening from recovered backup

So my time machine hard drive had some serious issues and could not be repaired. I ran data rescue on it to recover the last backup it did and put it on another drive. Now everything is fine, I erased the bad hard drive and reformatted and am using it again. I am working in indesign this morning and normally I can right click on a file and chose to edit it in a specific program. I chose illustrator. Now this is where it gets weird, it opened illustrator from the backup folder on an external drive rather then using illustrator that is on my hard drive, where it has always been. This only happens with illustrator, if I do the same thing but select photoshop, it opens from my application folder.

What could be causing this?

This is on a RMBP running latest update of Mavericks and latest updates of Adobe CC.

For Sale Free - G4 TiBook parts

Anyone in the GTA need parts for a 15" G4 Powerbook - 800Mhz?

No screen (due to minor tumble; the rest works) and no battery. I cannot give away the HD because we can't wipe it - starting up from the install disk doesn't allow the use of an external monitor, and I cannot see the bits of the screen I need to see to be able to erase the darn drive! I don't have any 2.5" IDE enclosures. (If you want the drive and have an enclosure we could pop it into, I'm quite willing to erase it on the spot)

Logic board, keyboard, case (not pretty cosmetically - the paint on these things tended to start coming off quite early on), Airport card, Pioneer DVR-K06/1 (which I think fits in a bunch of other Macs of that era). Also 2X 512MB sticks of RAM.

It's all apart at the moment, and I'm not putting it back together. I'd rather give it all to someone who is resurrecting an old machine than fiddle around trying to sell things on eBay for $5 and $10.

Pickup only (midtown Toronto) and has to go by June 20. PM me if interested! Any or all of it. :)

Bridging 2 routers in SOHO question

Have an ASUS RT-N66U (Router 1) wireless router connected to cable internet working fine in one end of the house. Decent enough coverage for most of the building, save the room where the TV is, at the far end of the house.

In a nutshell, would like to extend the range of the first router with a second router, wirelessly, both to connect wirelessly with the TV and to provide WI-FI access to laptops, cell phones, etc. while in the TV room, securely.

So, I picks me up a second RT-N66U (Router 2) and, after a bit of work, have them talking to each other, wirelessly, in "Wireless Router mode". Unfortunately, the only way this works is to have open access to the network, no security, no passwords, no MAC address filters, etc. As soon as security is turned on, the network fails at Router 2.

Suggestions for different settings, alternate hardware, etc.?

Car stolen in Windsor hits Dartmouth power pole | The Chronicle Herald

Car stolen in Windsor hits Dartmouth power pole

DAN ARSENAULT CRIME REPORTER

Published June 10, 2014 - 5:33pm

A car stolen in Windsor last week crashed into a power pole in Dartmouth after a police chase Tuesday morning.

A 27-year-old Halifax woman, who hasn’t been identified, suffered minor injuries and was taken from the scene on Princess Margaret Boulevard near Killkee Gate.

Wade O’Leary of Windsor, who works in Halifax and went to the crash scene, said he believes a man stole his daughter Jenna’s car overnight last Thursday.

He said she couldn’t find her keys Friday morning and noticed her 1999 Toyota Corolla was gone. The theft was reported to police.

On Tuesday at about 11 a.m., a member of O’Leary’s family, who didn’t want to be identified, saw an older Corolla on Main Street in Dartmouth and called Jenna, who provided a matching licence plate number.

The relative called police and followed the car until police took over.

Officers from Halifax Regional Police and Halifax RCMP took up the chase, which they said was not conducted at high speed, at Wyse and Windmill roads. According to police, they called off their pursuit when an RCMP cruiser came into contact with the Corolla.

But people at the scene said the chase was still underway when the car hit the pole.

Robbie Hatcher, who lives on Killkee Gate, heard sirens and went to an upstairs window.

“I looked outside and then I saw the car go around the corner and hit the lamp pole. She hit the corner too quickly.”

Vancouver Shooting at Starbucks

Vancouver shooting sends upscale neighbourhood into chaos, as police chase 61-year-old suspect along seaside

Quote:

After a shooting in downtown Vancouver left one man critically injured outside a Starbucks, police chased an elderly suspect along the seaside and exchanged gunfire with him near a children’s science centre.

A male victim — reportedly the owner of a nearby bike shop — lay on his back with a pool of blood beneath him outside the Starbucks around 11 a.m. in the upscale Yaletown district, with stunned baristas and passersby huddled around.

Quote:

Police caught up to the man outside Science World, about a 20-minute walk away from the Starbucks shooting scene. During the ensuing firefight, terrified Science World guests were told to lay flat on the floor.

A female officer was injured by glass from the windshield of her cruiser during the melee. The shooter, who police said was a 61-year-old male, was also wounded and taken to hospital where he was in stable condition.

purchasing Apple credit

In the wait for the iPhone 6 but also don't want to miss out on a potential Air Miles 25X event before the iPhone 6 is released. Not sure how Air Miles deals with it on their end, but at the time of an event, does Apple allow one to purchase "credit" towards a device, such as an iPhone? I'd also have to check with Air Miles to make sure that would be considered a legitimate purchase.

Heimlich maneuver - learn it!

The morning started innocently enough, I was drinking a glass of water while watching my friend cut rhubarb. He said something that made me laugh. Next thing I knew, I couldn't breathe and I was close to passing out.

Thank heaven my friend knew the Heimlich maneuver and was able to apply it.

Who knew that you could choke on water.

I've never been so scared.

So make sure you know how to do it and also know the universal sign for choking - put your hands around your throat because you won't be able to speak.

iPod music over external speakers

This may have been answered before but I can't find any posts in my search.

I would like to play my music on my iPod Touch wirelessly through a pair of good external speakers (with no built-in wireless capability), controlling the music selection and volume from the iPod. How can this be done? What additional equipment do I need (Apple TV, Airport Express, others etc), and how would I connect them together? The objective is to come up to the 21st century!!! Thanks for your help.

Google Chrome syncing

Anyone using Goodgle chrome as a browser? Just trying it out now. I imported all my Firefox bookmarks with no nitch. I'm now trying to figure out how to sync over my Chrome bookmarks to Chrome on my iPad. I'm told I need to sign in to Chrome (Google). I'm assuming that's the same as my Gmail account, or am I wrong? When I log in with that, I'm taken to my Gmail account but where and/or how does the syncing take place? Al I see is my email account. No option to sync bookmarks. And then, am I supposed to sign in on my iPad to see thoese synced bookmarks?

How cable companies screw U.S. (and Canada?) high-speed 'net

How Cable Companies Are Stopping You From Getting Fiber — Even Though It's Already Installed In Many Cities

the giant telecom companies — including Time Warner Cable, Verizon, and Comcast — are involved here. These are the same companies trying to bully the FCC into creating an “internet fast lane” so web-based companies can pay them more for better service.

For the most part, the cable companies have been offering incentives to local governments (mainly just better service) in exchange for noncompete clauses, which disallow those communities from adopting fiber networks that might rival their own services. MuniNetworks, a site that tracks local broadband efforts, said these “incumbent and monopolistic providers use the term ‘level playing field’ as code for ensuring communities are unable to build their own networks. They do not actually want a ‘level playing field,’ they want more advantages for their businesses.”

* * * *

First, the city agreed not to lease or sell the fiber. Second, the contract required that the city not "engage in any activities or outcomes that would result in business competition between the District and Comcast or that may result in loss of business opportunity for Comcast."

In other words, D.C. is sitting on a robust fiber network, but limitations from its 1999 agreement with Comcast render that network unavailable to residents and businesses. Further, nonprofits that want to use the network are forced to pay significantly more than what they’d pay with “incumbent products” from the cable companies.

The agreement between Comcast and D.C. is not uncommon, unfortunately. At least 20 states have laws or regulatory barriers that make it extremely difficult, if not illegal, for cities and communities to offer fiber access to their residents...

can't burn in 10.9.3

I have a quad core Mac Pro (3,1) with 12 gig ram, 4 TB space, sapphire radeon video card and a stock Optiarc dvd burning drive. with 10.9, I could burn stuff--cd's and the occasional dvd. now with 10.9.3 I can't do that anymore. My old burning program, BURN, doesn't work with Mavericks, and I have tried with SimplyBurns, Disco, NTI dragon burn

and even with Toast. Same thing. it gets ready to burn, tries to burn, gives me a sense error then quits. the dvd's I'm using are Verbatim DVD-R Azo's, if that helps anyone

thanks for helping me

iOS 8 beta so far

I've been on iOS 8 beta (legitimately) since just after it launched and so far this has to be the least problematic new iPhone software, this early on.

Unfortunately a few apps haven't caught up yet, and don't work at all. And the Continuity/Handoffs feature isn't working for me yet.

What's your experience? Or, what are you most looking forward to?

Would you use an ipad pro.

And friend of mine has an 11 inch Samsung and loves it. To him, it releases his need for a laptop top. A similar claim is held by the Surface.

So I am wondering can an ipad pro be far behind, but more to the point, would anyone use one.

I find the current ipad a nice size, not sure if I would want to carry a larger one around, and whether it would have to power to even try fireplace a lap top. Thoughts...

Yikes!

Was getting the eMac ready to send off for recycling. As it was doubtful it would have run long enough to do a secure erase of the HD, decided to pull it instead.

This was certainly not intended to be user serviceable. Forgetting the surplus screws there were way too many things I simply bent to get them out of the way. Even so dis/re-assembly took about an hour and I was not worrying about reconnecting various cables and grounds.

However I now have a 1 GB RAM stick for a USB 2 eMac, if some one can put it to work. Also have an airport extreme card.

Will keep the ATA Superdrive as a spare for the MacPro.

Given the deteriorating lifespan of the modern HD and the need to be able to replace with an SSD Apple is not doing itself any big favours by making HD access so difficult on some of its computers.

For Sale Mac Classic II (bad screen)

My wife has had her old Mac Classic II in the closet for years and she has no use for it. It used to work years ago, but now it only chimes and then sounds like its loading, but the screen only shows a funny pattern - so either the logic board has leaky caps or the crt is had its day (see photo).

Either way, I'm selling this item here as I'm sure there may be some avid enthusiasts who would like to collect or even attempt to fix/use for spare parts. I can't tell you what the overall specs of the machine are as I can't see the screen and is selling as is, along with its accessories (manual, mic, adb cable).

All offers will be considered - please PM me if interested.

Cheers-

*This is what the screen displays at start up

3 RCMP dead, 2 wounded - Moncton, NB

3 RCMP officers dead, 2 wounded in Moncton shooting

The New Brunswick RCMP have confirmed that three officers have been killed and two have been wounded in a shooting in Moncton.

A police manhunt is still underway for Justin Bourque, 24. The RCMP say Bourque is considered "armed and dangerous."

"There is an active shooter in the Moncton area. We’re asking residents to stay in their homes and lock their doors," said Rogers-Marsh.

At 10:05 p.m. AT RCMP said the shooter was near the Costco.

This appears to be the suspect's Facebook page. Why am I not surprised...

OS X Yosemite 10.10 - discussion

Gotta say, I'm surprised at the lack of discussion about the developments at WWDC (despite the Canadian WWDC streaming issue thread).

There are a bunch of things that are interesting to me:

  • minimum 2 gigs of RAM: this is really surprising, that -although unrealistic IMHO- they've kept the system requirements so low.

  • 10.10 changes the behaviour of the green "expand" button in the Finder to be a fullscreen button. Is this Apple finally capitulating to all of the Windows users who switched and just could not understand what the green button did?

  • Translucency everywhere. On any new install of OSX, my first trip is to the System Preferences to turn off the translucent menu bar. Looks like Apple is going hardcore in this direction...

  • iCloud Drive. Welcome back, iTools?

  • Mail now incorporates a feature that lets you send up to a 5-gigabyte attachment (auto embeds a link to an iCloud Drive file). Useful... if it works as advertised.

  • A whole whack of changes to Safari....

I've signed on to the OS X Public Beta program, but I don't know yet if I got in under the cutoff (first million signups). Let's hope...

27" iMac cracked/broken screen glass

Hi friends, earlier tonight my awesome 27" iMac (2009 Core 2 Duo) suffered a major injury. The desk it was sitting on got jerked around, causing the iMac to tip over frontside and the end result seems to be a broken screen (I haven't tried to start it back up yet). The power cord got yanked out while it went down.

The screen is shattered. The sound of broken glass was a punch in the guts.

What are my options for replacing the screen? Or is it gone for good?

Is it cost effective or does it make sense to buy a new one instead?

What would one expect to pay for such service?

Any help or advice is appreciated.

-x

For Sale 2005 Ford Escape Limited

Up for sale is my 2005 Ford Escape Limited. This is the fully loaded top of the line model, which has the following options:

Leather, heated seats, sunroof, upgraded audio with factory subwoofer, factory tow package, factory installed remote start. This vehicle has the 3.0L V6 and full time 4wd. All things considered it's decent on gas... Getting about 450kms per tank. It has had lots of recent work done including:

- flex pipe and ball joints up front (3k ago)

-front wheel bearings (10k ago)

Currently reads 243,000 on the odometer. I'm selling it as I started commuting for work and need something a little better on gas. Selling as is, I don't have the time to take it in for safety. Has a valid e test. Shouldn't need anything to very as I'm still driving it daily.

Asking 3900, but will accept reasonable offers, or trades ( must be a 4cyl, with a manual transmission and sunroof.)

Say What???

This sounds a bit bogus to me. I think the driver left it in gear and/or failed to engage the hand brake, then tried to blame the dog.

The reason? While it is possible he left it in neutral, the hand brake would still need to be engaged to keep it from drifting. So the dog would have to not only bump the shift lever into drive but disengage the hand brake.

To shift from Park into Drive the foot brake has to be applied which seems extremely unlikely.

One cannot overlook the possibility that the reporting is totally incompetent and the dog power shifted into a forward gear. Even so the hand brake should have been engaged stalling the engine.

Puppy drives car into Massachusetts pond - SFGate

Quote:

CANTON, Mass. (AP) — After going for a walk, a German shepherd puppy owned by a Massachusetts man decided to go for a drive — straight into a pond.

John Costello tells WFXT-TV (Puppy hits gas pedal, drives car into Canton pond - Boston News, Weather, Sports | FOX 25 | MyFoxBoston ) that his 12-week-old puppy, Rosie, was so excited Sunday after going for a walk at Bolivar Pond in Canton that she jumped in his running car, hit the gear stick and shifted into drive, before falling onto the gas pedal and sending the car careening into the water.

A couple of passers-by saw the commotion and helped Costello rescue Rosie. Nobody was injured, but Costello says the Dodge Neon is a total loss.

The 911 call surprised even police. Officer Robert Quirk says he has never heard of a dog driving into a pond.

Where is your part source?

Hey EhMacers, just got a 13" mid 2009 Macbook Pro from my brother who is switching to PC. I was looking at getting his laptop running like new again (as it used to be mine a few years ago).

Now, the battery is unable to hold a charge and the charging cable needs to be replaced. My question is, where do you get your parts from? iFixit seems pricey and heading to any computer repair place is generally pricey as well. I have been checking Canada Computers trying to find a compatible battery that I can install.

If you have any tips or places you get your mac parts from, drop a comment!

Side Note: It currently also has 4gb of RAM. Does anyone know the max capacity of a Mid 2009 Macbook? Wouldn't mind upgrading that while I am changing out the battery.

Thanks!

Music Playlist on iPad

Friend is traveling to Thailand this winter. She has a Windows computer at this time with iTunes installed.

Considering an iPad purchase for taking her music collection with her. Asked me if music could be located on a USB stick and selections chosen and synced to iPad.

How do you discover the GB count of your music playlist ?

I have been rooting around this morning to find answers on line. I gather that many of you travel ( I do not ) and you would be able to offer advice for my travelling friend.

She is open to an apple laptop purchase.

thank you for any and all suggestions
