Toast 12!?

I was surprised to see an update to disc burning software Toast! I thought it was abandonware.

I wonder if it is really much of an update. Would be nice if the "MKV support" it promises would allow one-step DVD burning.

Epson printer prints only in black and white

A friend of mine prints from his own extensive collection of historical railway negatives black and white as well as colour prints to sell at flea markets and the like.

His Windows XP machine died a while back and is only for scanning of negatives and printing decided he should join the Mac World. Purchased a basic Mac mini and transferred all of his numerous files 9many of which were using Corel as the basis for storage to two 500 gig

hard drives. His actual collection is stored in four four drawer vertical file cabinets. If a client wishes a print he pulls it from the file, scans it on the Epson 750 flatbed scanner and then prints it using the save function on the computer. Once scanned it is filed with other such negatives on the computer hard drive. BTW most of the negatives are long gone sizes i.e. 116, 122, 120 3.25 x 4.25 as well as the generic 4x5,5x7 and 8x10 negatives as well. He also has a selection of glass plate negatives.

The problem after transferring from the Corel system to standard jpegs and transferring drive content and the like is one of printing. Images on his monitor

which are black and white print as expected reproduce in black and white

However colour negatives appear on screen as colour positives, however they print black and white.

My friend’s XP system was set up years ago by a good friend. The owner of the collection is at best computer dumb. Push this button or that and it works. if it doesn’t he is stymied. BTW he does not have internet connections, for various reasons.

So my question is, where to look. Did the colour change transferring images from Corel to jpegs on the Mac? Or is there something on the setup on the printer.

He is using an Epson 2880 printer, three years old from new; and has not had any problems, except this particular problem. Latest Epson based software was downloaded here at my place from the internet, however never did try to print colour from here…

Suggestions or thoughts?

All iPods discontinued and replaced with iPhone 5c?

I have read somewhere that Apple is discontinuing the iPod touch (and all the iPod line) and replacing it with the iPhone 5c.

I also read that the iPhone 5c will be available in more colours (orange, purple, black and red), get a price cut (200-300$) and also get the same specs as the iPod touch (up to 64 GB storage). :)

Here is what the next generation iPhone #c would look like (in orange):

It Apple really going to discontinue the all iPods or not?

13-inch MBp late 2011 Keyboard Wiring?

I have a 13-inch MBp late 2011 where part of the keyboard suddenly quit working.

I want to be reasonably sure the keyboard itself suddenly became defective rather than the cable connecting the keyboard or something similar.

Keyboards - ie upper cases for that model are not exactly cheap.

When I checked the MBp this morning, the left side of the keyboard is working and the right side is not.

Specifically the following keys work:

F1, F2, F3, F4

` (none of the number keys work)

q, w, e, r

a, s, d, f

z, x, c, y

The rest of the keys don't work

The power button doesn't work either but it seems to be on permanently

I tried a wired Apple keyboard and also a Bluetooth keybord - both of these work fine.

Since everything on the right 2/3 of the keyboard is not working I thought this might indicate a different problem than an actual keyboard failure but I have no clue how the keyboard communicates with the logic board - thus the question.

The App I Used to Break Into My Neighbour’s Home

An interesting way that some apps have unintended consequences. Details in the link.

Quote:

When I broke into my neighbor’s home earlier this week, I didn’t use any cat burglar skills. I don’t know how to pick locks. I’m not even sure how to use a crowbar. It turns out all anyone needs to invade a friend’s apartment is an off switch for their conscience and an iPhone.

This was done politely: I even warned him the day before. My neighbor lives on the second floor of a Brooklyn walk-up, so when I came to his front door he tossed me a pair of keys rather than walk down the stairs to let me in. I opened the door, climbed the stairs, and handed his keys back to him. We chatted about our weekends. I drank a glass of water. Then I let him know that I would be back soon to gain unauthorized access to his home.

Less than an hour later, I owned a key to his front door.

FaceTime problem.

Have a FaceTime problem Tried to connect with my son in another country but couldn't. He had somehow lost his copy of FaceTime so downloaded new version from the App Store and configured it. We tried to connect but failed. I decided to update my version since it is 1.0.3 so went to App Store to buy 1.0.5. But it wouldn't let me. Said "FaceTime is already installed on this computer. Choose Software Update from the Apple menu to check for available updates." Problem is there is no update available through the Software Updater so I can't update it.

It says on the Apple Support website: "If you’re using Mac OS X v10.6, you should get the latest version of FaceTime for Mac in the Mac App Store." Except, no, I can't. Apple is running me around in circles.

As far as I know, we both have valid IDs. Any ideas what might be causing the connection problem?

Baked to perfection!

My 2008 15" MacBook Pro bit the dust and with every indication pointing at the NVIDIA chip I decided to bake (i.e. re-ball the NVIDIA chip) in the oven at 375 F for 7 1/2 minutes. I had nothing to lose other than a "door stop". I managed to get some liquid flux under the chip with the aid of a hypodermic syringe and a fine needle. After baking the board, I left it in the oven undisturbed until the following morning.

After reassembling the motherboard, low and behold, the computer functions perfectly. For how long, only time will tell.

I would not suggest doing this to a newer computer board but what have you to lose on an older model?

Defragmentation off HDD, is it necessary?

I've been using PC's for a good many years. I am an enthusiast. I enjoy tinkering, upgrading, trying new devices, etc. I purchased my first Mac (MBP-13") about 3 months ago and am pleased with the performance. I have found the OS X quite intuitive. My question: In the PC world one finds themselves defragging the HDD periodically. I checked out the support page available at Apple>Support and learned, according to them that defragmentation of the HDD is not necessary on a MAC. What are the views of group members here at ehMac.ca?

External Drive - File movement takes forever!

I'm arranging files on an external drive to free up space to set up an automatic back-up. When I move files from one folder to another one--all on the external drive itself--it takes a long time (as though I were moving it from my iMac to the drive, rather than near instant). What causes this?

If it matters, the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled).

So I get this call saying my Windows computer is sending data..

or something of the sorts. Might have said my Windows computer was in trouble, sending false data.

Anyhow, the guy at the other end had a strong foreign accent and I decided to listen to his story out of interest.

I asked a few questions about where they had gotten my tel. #,ect, and he then asked if I was ready to sit down and work on solving the problem with my pc.

I told him I had a Mac, and he said "ok, you can talk to a Mac tech.."

No thanks, goodbye. Click!

What I'm wondering is if during the conversation, these fraudster (only polite word I can come up with at the moment) can seize our phone line while we're conversing..?

There were a few warnings some time back about getting telephone lines hijacked and then using them to make long distance phone calls.

I checked my phone not long after hanging up and everything was normal (dial tone).

Any insights on these types of calls..?

Specialty Stylus?

Am looking for a fine point stylus for use

with my newly acquired iPhone 5c.

The "normal" rubber stylus

intended for iPads is too large for

Purchased a stylus with a small metal knob

on the end surrounded by a plastic disc.

The plastic disc has disappeared into

is now useless.

Have thought of purchasing the normal

rubber stylus and reducing the diameter

of the knob however have no idea what

that may or may not do to the instrument itself.

Thoughts?

And at one time in the far distant

would allow even the tip of a lead pencil to

do the trick. no more with the current crop of devices,

Forensic scientist drops bomb on Apple iOS security

Forensic scientist drops bomb on Apple iOS security

Quote:

Speaking at the Hackers On Planet Earth (HOPE/X) conference in New York, Jonathan Zdziarski basically shot down Apple’s claims about security and their efforts to safeguard iOS devices from police and government snooping.

Zdziarski, better known as the hacker "NerveGas" in the iPhone development community, worked as dev-team member on many of the early iOS jailbreaks and is the author of five iOS-related O’Reilly books including "Hacking and Securing iOS Applications."

In his talk, Zdziarski revealed "a number of undocumented high-value forensic services running on every iOS device" and "suspicious design omissions in iOS that make collection easier." He also provided examples of forensic artifacts acquired that "should never come off the device" without user consent.

Interesting read. Apple's response is that they didn't intentionally build in a backdoor but they don't really directly address much of what he notes.

What is the best Mac OS to run after Snow Leopard?

All the Macs in my family except one now run Snow Leopard even though they are all new enough to run Maverick.

There are no problems with Snow Leopard at all and every one is perfectly happy to stay on that OS until they need an application that is only a later Mac OS.

However, I'm running into another issue - what hardware to buy for a new Mac.

Last Mac I bought was in Jan 2013 when I jumped on a late 2011 MBp in the Apple refurb shop, the last one that could run OS 10.6

Now however the oldest refurbs are earlier models so the question - which is currently the most stable Mac OS.

From what I have read and heard from friends, my guess would be 10.8 or Mountain Lion.

Any input or comments?

Working with Macbook and Mini

Not sure how to phrase this but here goes.

My main machine is a Mac Mini with TB display. It runs 24/7 and is the home network serving up iTunes to the ATVs around the house. No biggee.

I also have an iPad Mini which is OK but I don't really like it for web browsing, you know filling out forms online, Flash etc, otherwise it's great.

So I'm thinking of picking up a Macbook Air 11" to replace the iPad. Keyboard etc etc.

Anyway, I guess my question is; how do I best keep things organized between the Mac Mini and the MBA? Email, iTunes?

The MM has the 256 SSD and all data, iTunes, docs etc are on a separate 4Tb TB drive.

Should I install OSX server on the Mini? Overkill?

Blueberry pancakes - some thoughts and memories.

We bought some fresh blueberries the other day, and I made pancakes. And 'wow', they were sure good. :D

It's been a long while since I've bought, or even tasted fresh blueberries, and I was definitely hestitant when it came to buying these (at a local supermarket). But they looked fresh, and package stated "product of Canada" ... so we thought we would give them a try.

My memories of 'real' blueberries have always taken me back to late-teen years working at a cannery here, and sampling very fresh blueberries 'off the line', and much later, in Nova Scotia, picking 'wild' blueberries, and then having some of the best blueberry pancakes I've ever tasted, at an Inn in Baddeck, NS.

I think I did good!! The pancakes I prepared the other day sure tasted "some good", and brought back many fond memories. And with all the 'good stuff' I added (whole wheat & white flours, bran, cormeal, yogurt, et al), I believe they were quite nutritious too! :)

Can't recall getting so excited by making and enjoying pancakes ... maybe it just turned out to be 'the time & place' when it all worked?

Anyone running a black WD drive in their Mac Mini?

I bought a WD black 2.5 inch drive as a replacement drive for a Mac Mini, this model specifically:

Western Digital WD7500BPKX Black 750GB 2.5in 7200RPM 16MB SATA3 Notebook Hard Drive

I initially installed it into a MacAlly FW800 enclosure and am using that as my main drive with the Min.

That works fine and has been for at least a month but the drive, ie enclosure seems to get rather hot.

Not too hot to touch the enclosure but hot enough so that holding the enclosure for any length of time becomes uncomfortable.

What concerns me is how this drive would work inside the Mini - I assume cooling would be worse than in the external enclosure.

Maybe a 7500 RPM 2.5" drive for the Mini wasn't such a good idea and I should revert to a WD 5400 RPM drive that runs a lot cooler.

Anyone with practical experience running a somewhat hot drive in a Mini?

Replacing the drive in a Mini is a pain so I don't really want to do that twice.

PS: I also need to replace a drive in a 2011 13-inch MacBook Pro.

Same concern and same question.

Shutdown Failures

This MacMini is having shutdown failures and they're increasing.

I use the Apple Menu's Shutdown command. After about a minute the screen goes grey but the power doesn't shut off. The white power light is still on. This used to happen rarely, but now it's happening most of the time. What is causing this, does this indicate serious issues and is there something that can be done about it?

A few months ago an Apple tech advisor told me to pull the power plug when a normal shutdown fails, wait a few minutes. Then quickly press these keys when rebooting: Command-Option-P-R. This will trigger a CROP second reboot immediately. Apparently doing a CROP settles some things internally. Yet the shutdown failures keep on increasing.

This is a 2009 MacMini running 10.9.4. Processor 2.26 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 8 GB Ram. Earlier tonight I ran Disk Utility to verify the hard drive. It said the hard drive is OK. Then ran a permissions check and it found and fixed a handful of items, details below:

Was looking at the features list for the nano. Does all sorts of automated stuff that really does nothing for me, but does not mention whether or not you can simply transfer a series of playlists from iTunes to the iPod and have the play lists show up the same way they do on the computer.

Any one know?

I just found out from Rogers that my iPhone is locked. In order to unlock it so that I can pop another sim card in, I have to pay off the balance of almost $300 and then another $50 to unlock it. Basically all I want is GPS and some texting. I'm wondering what other iPhone users have done when travelling to European countries.:)

Various system folders empty on CCC back up

Ran a back up using CCC a few days ago.

Now it seems the hard drive of that Mac I made back ups from crashed.

When I tried to use the back up it won't boot.

Opening the back up on another Mac shows many of the folders empty, ie when one double clicks on them or clicks the little arrow to the left of the folder, there is nothing.

However, none of these folders are really empty since the back up external shows 216GB available on a 500GB drive and the back up is the only thing on that drive.

"Empty" folders include

System folder which only has the Library folder in it and that library folder is "empty"

Users folder shows the actual user folder, a shared folder and a test folder, but each one of the last three is "empty"

Application folder is empty

There is a PortDetect.log file which the Mac tells me is corrupt when I tried copying files and folders to another drive.

Since that external drive shows almost 300GB of data on it, I assume the data is there, just not linked the way it needs to be.

Any way to recover from this - especially the user data?

I tried disk warrior to rebuild the directory, but it does nothing - when one clicks on rebuild nothing happens.

Also tried Data Rescue II which seems to do something but to run that seems to take days

Any suggestions where to go from here?

The Home Office Shakedown

Hi guys :)

I haven't posted here in a LOOONG time! But I figure at least a few people might appreciate this... I've worked a really long time to build up my "perfect office" and the last thing I was holding out on was a new Thunderbolt Display... since Apple is taking it's sweet time I bought a new Dell to scratch the itch. So... with the addition of the Dell u2414h... my office is pretty much complete. :)

I always LOVE seeing clean workspaces, artistic stuff and basically really cool home office spaces. So, if you've got something you want to share - post it here. If you're as OCD about hiding your cables... this is the thread to brag about it ;)

Ok... here's my home office ;)

Highlights...

Maxed out 13'' rMBP

Bose Companion 20 Speakers

Dell u2414h 24'' display

Giant whiteboard wall (thanks rust-o-leum!)

Eames lounge chair

Vintage late 70's Epiphone Les Paul

Library & lots of Da Vinci stuff...

And... no wires. :D

Ok... share the love, lets see your home offices or "works in progress" :)

Cheers

- Adam

Some weird laws that still exist

This is from a Toronto Sun website article. Some are not that weird but others you have got to ask what were they thinking or do we still need that law.

10 weirdest laws in Canada | Canada | News | Toronto Sun

  • If you live in St. John's, N.L you better not get caught with cows in your house. It's also against the law there to drive cattle through the streets of St. John’s after 8 a.m.

  • According to the Canadian Currency Act of 1985, there is a cap on the number of coins you can use in a single transaction. If you’re paying with nickels, vendors can deny any purchase over $5, while the loonie limit is $25.

  • An old Toronto bylaw made it illegal to drag a dead horse down Yonge Street on Sundays. So does that mean Mondays to Saturdays are a free-for-all?

  • While every province has its own occupational and safety laws, Alberta’s is a little more specific when it comes to ladders. Under Alberta’s Occupational and Safety Code, “a person must not paint a wooden ladder” as paint and other coatings can prevent a person from seeing the condition of a wooden ladder.

  • While Quebec sign laws generate plenty of debate across Canada, in Montreal, 'for sale' signs are not permitted in the windows of moving vehicles.

edit mp3 and boost volume in garageband?

I have a record player that has a built in mp3 convertor. I used this to record an old record of fairy tales I used to listen to as a kid. I left the record on and left while it was doing its thing, thinking it would stop once it reached the end of the record. I was wrong and have a 7 hour mp3. Now the record only has about 25 mins of audio, so I need to trim it down. That should be no problem in garageband, but what I want to do is boost the volume as it is very quiet and I have to crank my speakers in order to hear it. Is there a way to boost the volume in garage band? I have used the volume slider for the track in garageband, but it is still not that loud. I am open to suggestions for other audio software, not sure whats out there.

Some Thoughts on Customer Service/Satisfaction

So recently had a front end alignment and and a pair of tires put on the minivan. Went with the same tires that were already on the van in the event that the alignment did not fully solve the tire wear problem I would still have two good tires that could be matched.

The instructions were simple. Front tires go to the back axle. Spare and right rear get new tires and go to front, discard tires on those two rims. Left rear becomes the spare.

When I picked it up the front had gone to the rear, rears had the new tires and were mounted on the front. I pointed out that I had wanted the left rear to become the spare as the spare was a different brand and diameter from the other tires. To fix this would have taken 5 minutes and about 50¢ in weights. Instead the dealer insisted I would have to pay $20 to fix their mistake!

I pointed out that there was no way I was going to pay them extra for them failing to read the clear directions. Furthermore I would do future business elsewhere if that was their attitude.

Found another dealer that did the swap for $7.

Fast forward. Time for some routine maintenance that was going to run in the $6-800 range. That particular shop has a good mechanic but surprise, surprise he won't be doing the work. Now most of the cost of this job is labour so trying to stiff me for $20, ended up costing them at least $500.

Needlessly pissing off a customer is not good business!

Blocked plug-in message not showing up

Recently there was a found security flaw in Flash, again. But I don't want to discuss that. But according to Apple they can block plug-in's that are a security risk and this should be happening now. But it is not for me.

I am on version 14.0.0.125 so the message should pop up for me, but it's not. How come? and what do I have to change to make it work like it should.

Apple blocks older Flash plug-in versions in Safari due to vulnerability

Quote:

Users with out of date plug-ins will be met with a message saying, "Blocked plug-in," "Flash Security Alert" or "Flash out-of-date" when attempting to access Flash content in Safari. Clicking on the alert takes users to Adobe's Flash installer page, where the latest version of the plug-in can be downloaded and installed.

Imac G4 boot-up problems

My son mistakenly tried to install an update on the 1.25 ghz Imac G4 he uses. Now it just boots up but goes as far as the Apple logo and spinning wheel and no further. I tried booting up in safe mode (pressing the shift key after the boot-up chime) but then it gives me a blue screen with the pointer that I can move around with the mouse and that's it, no icons of any sort.

I don't have the original discs or a copy of Leopard, which is what's on there now.

Advice? We want a good quality photo printer

It seems someone asks for printer recommendations about every 2 years, and so it is now my turn.

What we would like is a reliable printer that prints good quality photos, in regular photo sizes. This is for personal use, with only a few photos per month, mainly to send to family who lack the ability to view emailed photos. It's only for photos, as we are otherwise largely paperless, and the Epson Artisan 837 that we have fulfills all our regular printing needs.

It has to work with the collection of devices we have, or at least iMacs of up to 5 years old with firewire 800 and USB 2, with 10.6.8, through to newer with the latest OS, and MacBook Pros of a similar range.

It is easy enough to get photos printed straight from an SD card at some stores, but we go out less and less, and printing at home would be more convenient than a dedicated trip to the nearest store, 15 km from home one way.

I have looked at the Apple Canada website and nothing specifically mentions photo printing. In any event, I'm not asking for help with urls, I am hoping that someone has personal experience and can recommend for (or against) some currently available model.

Thanks in advance for any pointers to a good quality photo printer.

Women in STEM / Programming

Man, it's not been a pretty 2014 for ladies in tech so far. Not sure if it's because I'm following tons of female programmers, but I'm seeing acrimony in my twitter timeline. And I get it. There have been some very notable and high profile incidents all this year. More and more are making the news when there's even the slightest whiff of sexism. And this recent Tinder debacle is just the latest in a series of misconducts

But it's a pretty interesting topic right now.

There must be some ladies on the boards here, no?? Any of you work in tech right now? care to share some sentiments??

WD Black2 + Mac OS

So when this dream of a HD came out, it was priced at this jaw dropping $300+ : for a 120G SSD w/ 1TB data drive, all in one. But I didn't think it would fly as I thought it was grossly overpriced - and so did most tech blogs.

FFWD some months now, and I just saw it @ $179. Fair deal. So I poke around to see what Mac users have been saying about it. Oh - not Mac OS compatible. Well, not out the gate. You need a Windows to format it, and then you can possibly drop MacOS on afterwards.

what a pain.

This has the early 2000s feel when nothing was being developed for Mac OS. Big companies still do that?? Surprising, esp coming from WD. I guess I would have to BUY windows OS just to install on this bad boy, JUST to erase it afterwards to drop it into a Mac. womp womp.

Just bought a 1TB Seagate HSSD for $99. Likely the last little bit of $ I drop into my antiquated unit but I get an MBA last this yr. But I would have stepped up to the WD Black2 had it not been for this nonsense!

Vintage Macs for Sale?

Hi.

I just joined this forum and I'm posing my first message. Does anyone know of any stores in the Toronto area that may sell vintage Macs? I'm looking for a MAC SE or SE/30 in excellent working order. I used to have a SE over 20 years ago and I'd love to get my hands on one. I have some old games that I'd like to play. I'm dating myself but the last time I went looking for old macs was back in the 90's and the store was called CPUSED but they're long gone.

I would appreciate any suggestions. Thank you.

Where is this Calgary family?

A very strange story out of Calgary....

'Stay strong,' urge family of missing Nathan O'Brien, 5, and his grandparents

Kathy and Alvin Liknes haven't been seen since Sunday night when they had their grandson Nathan O'Brien stay over at their Calgary home.

An Amber Alert is still in effect for Nathan O'Brien, 5, after he and his grandparents — Kathryn Liknes, 53, and Alvin Liknes, 66 — were discovered missing Monday morning.

Nathan's mother went to pick up her son at the Liknes's home in the southwest neighbourhood of Parkhill at 10 a.m. MT Monday.

But all three were gone, and there were signs that they had not left willingly, according to police.

Nathan has blond curly hair, brown eyes and was wearing peach-coloured shorts and a striped blue hoodie when he was last seen.

His grandmother has red-brown hair and green eyes and was last seen wearing pyjamas. Alvin Liknes has grey-blond hair and was last seen wearing black sports shorts. He walks with a slight limp.

They are not considered suspects in the boy’s abduction, police say.

Calgary police are asking anyone who attended an estate sale that the grandparents held at their home on the weekend to come forward.

No speaker sound on iPhone 4s

I've had my iPhone for 2 years of a 3 yr contract. Love it!

Except now I have no speaker sound - no alarm sound, no ringtones, no Siri voice or Youtube sound, etc. I can hear a phone call voice when I place it to my ear. Just don't hear the ringing.

So, I googled the problem. Found a ton of solutions. Seems as if I'm not the only one...

No sound coming from my iPhone » iPhone No Sound

Tried most of the software solutions without result. Several suggested changing the 1) dock connector as a cheap fix. I don't want to open the iPhone to brave that.

So, I took my iPhone to our one local Apple reseller in our small city. Told me the speaker is kaput! They can't do hardware repairs and would have to send it out of town. I'm doubtful about the quality of the diagnosis. Would a sales store have the skills to check a defective speaker vs a defective dock connector?

My options are:

2) Buy a refurbished iPhone for $200 Cdn.

3) Buy out my contract for $150 and upgrade to 5c for $100 plus a 2 year contract.

I didn't buy any insurance previously.

Which option would you choose?
