My 2008 15" MacBook Pro bit the dust and with every indication pointing at the NVIDIA chip I decided to bake (i.e. re-ball the NVIDIA chip) in the oven at 375 F for 7 1/2 minutes. I had nothing to lose other than a "door stop". I managed to get some liquid flux under the chip with the aid of a hypodermic syringe and a fine needle. After baking the board, I left it in the oven undisturbed until the following morning.
After reassembling the motherboard, low and behold, the computer functions perfectly. For how long, only time will tell.
I would not suggest doing this to a newer computer board but what have you to lose on an older model?
