CD input problem

I recently noticed that I can no longer input CDs into my 2008 24" iMac after installing Maverick. I can input DVDs but not CDs. I have tried all the usual fixes such as cleaning, checking all the possible check boxes for software management all with no luck. I don't know if this is a software problem or a hardware problem. I am using an external burner with USB as a go around but would like to fix the problem, if it is fixable.
