Crossbow killings in Scarborough?

What the hell, Toronto?

Police say crossbow deaths in Scarborough linked to suspicious package downtown
Toronto police confirm there is a link between the three deaths involving a crossbow in east Toronto and a suspicious package found in the downtown area of the city. No further details were provided.

Earlier Thursday, police revealed that three people are dead, all of whom were found with apparent crossbow injuries, in the Scarborough area of Toronto on Thursday afternoon. A source with knowledge of the investigation said it's believed all three deceased are related, CBC News has learned.

Police said the bodies of two men and a woman were found in a garage. Two people were found with no vital signs, and one person died after officers arrived, police confirmed.

* * *

Police have also confirmed that a 35-year-old male suspect, who has injuries, is being held in custody.

Apple TV does not work with Ethernet cable.

Hello all, a question for you. I have an Apple TV 2 which was connected to my internet by an Ethernet cable. We had a brown out last night and it appeared to knockout the Apple TV. I couldn't get it to reboot and broadcast. I have a new Apple TV downstairs and brought it up to try the system. No soap....but, both work on WiFi. I thought maybe the cable itself is done so I replaced the cable, still nothing....but WiFi works fine. We had the cable attached to speed up the streaming so will see how well the WiFi works when both Apple TVs are working. But I can't figure out why the reboot didn't work. Any thoughts.....

MBP Retina 13" (2015) SD card reader not reading

I've taken my SD card out of my Canon T2i and inserted it into the slot in my MBP but no go. Nothing reads.

I stick it in a card reader via USB and it reads.

What to do? It's still under warranty so does this mean going to the Genius Bar and losing my MBP until they fix it??

Is this a known issue?

Also, the touchpad sometimes acts oddly and either doesn't scroll easily all of a sudden, or acts as if I'm left clicking.

Better Late Than Never

I am far from a big fan of reality shows on TV and seldom watch them, but something tells me this upcoming show might be worth a look. Anyone else think it might fly?

Quote:

The Fonz, Capt. Kirk, a two-time heavyweight champion, an NFL Hall of Famer, and a standup comedian walk into a Japanese bar.

What sounds like the beginning of a bad joke is actually one of many heartwarming and hilarious scenes that make up NBC’s new reality series Better Late Than Never, a fish-out-of-water concept based on the South Korean hit Grandpas Over Flowers. It sends four famous elder statesmen (Henry Winkler, William Shatner, George Foreman, and Terry Bradshaw) to explore Asia for a month without personal assistants, publicists, limousines, presidential suites, translators, or any of the other creature comforts that their life in the limelight normally provides.

ziplock to protect iPhone from submersion?

A few friends and I bought some inflatable rafts to enjoy some time on a quiet river, paddling about. We are heading out tonight to give try them out for the first time. I am now thinking of what to do, would be nice to have my phone to snap a picture or two as well as to make a call in case of an emergency. I do not have a waterproof case. I was thinking of just stuffing my iPhone 6 Plus in a large zip lock bag. Would want to do the same with my keys, being they all have batteries now. I am assuming a ziplock bag, properly sealed should be fine in case of a tip over, but not 100% sure. It would be in a pocket in my life vest as well, though the pocket is not water proof. Anyone have any experience with zip lock bags protecting from submersion?

2009 MBP Wifi Connected to Router OK, 2013 MBA Won't

I recently picked up a 2013 13" Macbook Air. I've been having issues with wifi ever since (slow or unresponsive, constant signal drop outs). I've been struggling with it for hours trying different things, deleting various preferences, changing settings... FINALLY, I thought to try tethering from my iPhone, low and behold it works FINE (except the stupid iPhone won't tether with wifi, only LTE so it's eating up my data quick).

Anyway, the problem is obviously with the router and how this Macbook Air is communicating with it. My 2009 Macbook Pro connected to it just fine, as does the Surface Pro I have. So SOMETHING is up with this freakin Macbook Air, and I have no idea what it is.

Does anyone know what I need to do to get this damn thing to work properly? The router is my neighbours (we're splitting internet), so I can't log in and change settings, but honestly I really shouldn't have to if 3 of my other devices all connect JUST FINE without having to do anything extra.

Any help getting this fixed will be greatly appreciated! I'm selling my two other machines, so I need to get this wifi working asap.

iMac not displaying files in finder

Hi,

New to the forums here. I have an early 2008 iMac Core 2 Duo. I have never had any problems with it until recently.

When I try to view the contents of a folder by opening it in the Finder, rarely will it actually show me the files. More often than not, it will look empty, or will have a very "jumbled" look... see attached photos.

Any suggestions?

iPad Mini 2 and iOS 9

I use my iPad Mini 2 mostly to watch videos, read e-books, and the occasional Web access. I have left my iPad running iOS 7.1.2, as I cannot easily downgrade the OS once I perform the upgrade. I am taking the approach that "if it ain't broke, don't fix it".

I know that my iPad Mini can run iOS 9. But every time I look up articles about any major issue I keep reading that there will be a performance penalty once upgrading to iOS 9. I would like to know how significant is the performance degradation, if it means choppy video playback when I watch a 720p video? Is it worth upgrading to iOS 9? I think the upgrade is a one-way path. There is no possibility of downgrading back to iOS 7.1.2, is that correct?

Our changing planet

Would it be too much to ask that this thread be left free of the acrimonious tossing of feces that goes on in the GHG thread, and focus simply on real, observable changes to our planet's climate and the ways in which people and governments are being affected / are coping / etc.?

Louisiana's Coast Is Sinking

It’s becoming harder and harder to communicate the most urgent crisis facing Louisiana.

According to the U.S.G.S., the state lost just under 1,900 square miles of land between 1932 and 2000. This is the rough equivalent of the entire state of Delaware dropping into the Gulf of Mexico, and the disappearing act has no closing date. If nothing is done to stop the hemorrhaging, the state predicts as much as another 1,750 square miles of land  —  an area larger than Rhode Island  —  will convert to water by 2064.

An area approximately the size of a football field continues to slip away every hour. “We’re sinking faster than any coast on the planet,” explains Bob Marshall, a Pulitzer-winning journalist in New Orleans. Marshall authored the series “Losing Ground,” a recent collaboration between The Lens, a non-profit newsroom, and ProPublica, about the Louisiana coast’s epic demise.

* * *

Using publicly available data, Galinski created a map on which areas that commonly appear as land on government issued maps—woody wetlands, emergent herbaceous wetlands, and barren land — were re-categorized to appear as water...

* * *

On our map, the real map, the boot appears as if it came out on the wrong side of a battle with a lawnmower’s blades. It loses a painful chunk off its heel in Cameron and Vermilion parishes.

Some people might criticize us for taking out the wetlands entirely, and there are places that do exist in real life — like Isle de Jean Charles — that aren’t on our boot (although they are visible, if barely, on the map we used to create the boot). But maps are approximations, and we believe ours errs closer to the side of truth.

* * *

On our true map, I saw something the human eye can’t perceive: I was standing on a barely visible stripe of earth far offshore, land that anyone who cares knows is in imminent danger of fading into oblivion. On our map, the beach where we stood and the road we traveled to get to it are barely holding on. The map sounds an alarm too few people have heard.

I've noticed this several times now when adding a new Contact. Question for guitar players.

Was thinking of getting an acoustic guitar. Price is an issue so I would like to keep it in the $500 range. I was looking at a few brands and was wondering if any guitar playing ehMacers had some brand and model suggestions. Years ago I played a Gibson but found the neck toooooo wide for my liking. I also have been looking at an Ovation, but I don't know anyone who plays one. Any suggestions would be appreciated?

CRA Scam and Itunes...

I'm working out of town and call home. My wife informs me that my son, a student, and herself, fell for a scam, a call supposedly from Revenue Canada, saying that if taxes that were in arrears were not paid, the cops were to come around soon to throw (you) in jail.
Turns out my son does owe some income tax but has been making regular monthly payments. He called the number left with the message and was threatened again. He panicked, told his mum he didn't want to jail, that she had to help him. The scheme works on fear, urgency and threats.
Payment could be made now, my son was told, by buying Itunes cards and giving them the number over the phone.
I know it doesn't make any sense but it seems a lot of people are falling for this, obviously because they are scared and can't think straight.

The amount forked over would have bought a couple of nice MBPros.
As soon as they made the payment, my son came to his senses and checked on-line to find that yes, it is a scam...

Anyhow, what's done is done.
I'm wondering how the crooks use Itunes credits to get cash? Also, if the amount of Itunes card numbers cashed in by anyone individual is continuously high, shouldn't Apple get suspicious that there's a scam happening, especially since this has been going on in the States as well for some times?

make Mavericks USB bootable drive in El Capitan

So my cousin is replacing a dead hard drive in his 24" iMac. They are putting in a 480 gig SSD which should breath some new life in the older machine. Anyways, the store wanted $75 to install the OS. They are gone for a week and a bit so I told them I will just get it all back up and running, they have a time machine backup so basically just need to get something installed so I can restore from time machine. I am assuming I need to install and OS before getting to the startup restore option. I have a disc image of Mavericks and want to create a USB installer. Not sure exactly how to do that, I find instructions for el capitan but not nothing on how to do it from el capitan with a mavericks installer. Whats the best way to make a bootable USB installer of Mavericks from a computer running El Capitan?

GMO Mosquitos (Florida, etc.)

Let's just park this one here, and revisit it in a year or two to see how things have progressed....

Genetically modified mosquitoes approved to battle Zika in Florida Keys

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved genetically modified mosquitoes as part of a trial to control the Zika outbreak in the Florida Keys.

The agency announced the approval Friday, saying it would not have a significant impact on the environment. Meanwhile, aerial and ground spraying of pesticides continues.

The British company Oxitec developed the mosquitoes, which are modified so their offspring die before reaching reproductive age.

No mosquitoes will be released immediately. Rather, officials in the Keys will hold a nonbinding public vote on the plan in November.

Trials of the modified mosquitoes in Brazil, Panama and the Cayman Islands suggest they reduced local populations of Aedes aegypti mosquitoes by more than 90 per cent, Oxitec says. The mosquito species also spreads dengue, yellow fever and chikungunya.

Unlocking an MS Power Point Presentation that is "read-only"

We have a few MS PPT presentations that are locked with a password and can only be read - not modified.
Problem is that the lady who created these for our organization passed away a few weeks ago and a quick search for the passwords were unsuccessful so far.
Going to more files to find the passwords is very time consuming - the changes we need to make need to be done in the next few days.

I did a quick google search if there is a way to bypass the password but didn't come up with anything.

So I decided to open these presentations in Keynotes not really expecting that this would make any difference.
But it turns out that when the presentation is opened in Keynotes, the password protected "read-only" presentation becomes fully editable (at least the various things I tried)
This also happens if the presentation is opened in Libre Office.
And when I then export the presentation from keynotes as an MS Power Point presentation, the password protection for "read-only" is gone.

I'm still shaking my head that it is that ridiculously easy to bypass the MS PPT read-only protection.

Any comments?

my average temp on the mid 2010 MacPro is about 41 degrees.
