Apple TV Media Server App

Is there an app for Apple TV (free or otherwise) that will connect me to other Macs on my network for steaming various media? I've done a bit of poking but it'd be great to get a recommendation. I don't mind paying if it does a good job!

2011 Macbook Pro Upgrade?

I have a Macbook Pro (13", Early 2011) and I was hoping to upgrade it, as I believe this is one of the models where the parts aren't soldered together, so I can add upgrade some parts. The current specs are:

2.5 GHz Intel core i5
4GB 1333 MHz DDR3
Intel HD Graphics 30000 384 MB
320GB HDD

I am thinking of upgrading to 16GB RAM and switching in a 275GB SSD for the HDD. This will cost around $310.

Does anyone know how much of a difference this upgrade will make? Is it worth it to upgrade at this point or should I just invest in another MBP? How does it compare to the likes of a 2014 or 2015 Macbook Pro? Would you recommend someone doing this upgrade them self?

Calgary Lawsuit

Druh Farrell sued by former restaurant owner | Calgary | News | Calgary Sun

I knew all the parties involved in this lawsuit, albeit back in 2000-2002. At that time Druh was just getting started in city politics, and her dad ran a guitar repair business close to where I worked in Kensington. My impression was that she was probably too honest to last in the political game, but she has had quite a few years to devolve within the system.

The Osteria was one of those "in" restaurants. Rocco always seemed extremely volatile and on one occasion came in the shop and threatened a customer for parking in his restaurant parking lot. I really liked his wife, and had pleasant chats with her on a few occasions.

My gut tells me the facts may not match the story line. Will be interesting to follow this as it develops.

Quote:

The application was rejected by city council in a 8-6 vote and the Calgary Planning Commission. The planning commission hearings were marred by allegations of threats and intimidation against a planner and community members.

During a February 2015 meeting, Mike Terrigno, son of the restaurant’s founders, followed a city planner outside the commission room during the hearing — an incident that sparked an investigation by city hall and two "reports of threats" to the Calgary Police Service.

Manchester incident: 19+ deaths, 50+ injured

At least 19 killed in suspected attack at Ariana Grande concert in British arena

At least 19 people were killed and more than 50 injured in an explosion at the end of a concert by U.S. singer Ariana Grande in the English city of Manchester on Monday and two U.S. officials said a suicide bomber was suspected.

Prime Minister Theresa May said the incident was being treated as a terrorist attack. If confirmed, it would be the deadliest militant assault on Britain since four British Muslims killed 52 people in suicide bombings on London's transport system in July 2005.

Police responded to reports of an explosion shortly after 10:35 pm at the arena, which has a capacity for 21,000 people, and where the U.S. singer had been performing to an audience that included many children.

A witness who attended the concert said she felt a huge blast as she was leaving the arena, followed by screaming and a rush by thousands of people trying to escape the building.

A video posted on Twitter showed fans, many of them young, screaming and running from the venue. Dozens of parents frantically searched for their children, posting photos and pleading for information on social media.

"We were making our way out and when we were right by the door there was a massive explosion and everybody was screaming," concertgoer Catherine Macfarlane told Reuters.

"It was a huge explosion - you could feel it in your chest. It was chaotic. Everybody was running and screaming and just trying to get out."

Software Update confusion?

We have a desktop iMac and a MacBook Air, both on OSX 10.9.5 Mavericks. Software Update is regularly checked. On 15 May it advised one update available. It installed iTunes 12.6.1

On checking it today Software Update shows that it installed iTunes 12.6.1 on 15 May but it advises one update available - iTunes 12.6.1. This is the same on both Macs.

I will be grateful for an explanation and advice on any remedial action.

Password question on iPhone 6

My name is Jack and I am a long time member, and most often just a follower on the forum. Yesterday when showing my wife how to find a password for something on her iPhone, I noticed that all my passwords were on her phone but none of hers are on my iPhone. We both have a iPhone 6, iOS 10.3.1. Were the passwords somehow put on her phone during a back-up? For some reason I had her phone listed in my Apple ID account. Could this have been the reason for the passwords from my different places showing up on her phone? Any and all info will be greatly appreciated.

MBP 2012 refurbs vs later

Hi,

I'm thinking about upgrading from my 2010 MBP and saw a bunch of 2012s on the Apple.ca site. That's only 2 years younger! Would they really be much of an improvement? Any thoughts?

I've also spotted from time to time some 2015s also. I'm interested in the machines that include an SD port even if not a DVD. I can't afford nor am ready to move to the most recent machines.

Can an SSD HD that works in a MBP 2010....

Hi,

Will it also work in a newer machine of say 2015?

I bought a 500 gig SSD HD to buy some time for the life of my 2010 MBP but now am looking to upgrade to a newer MBP from 2015 so I get the ports those machines still have.

I'm just wondering if I can save some money and use a piece of kit I have already bought. I can't really afford to put a bigger drive in otherwise.

Thanks

PS...running OS 10.7.5 now.

How do I import a CD in AIFF-C format into iTunes?

I bought a music CD from an artist in Peru and have tried unsuccessfully to import the music into iTunes. The CD and the jacket are professionally produced so I suspect it's my lack of knowledge that is the problem.

The files are visible in iTunes but something must not be correct in the conversion process because the music will not play. iTunes will also not play the CD.

I've searched for information, read lots of posts on the Apple Support pages but found nothing useful. I've tried playing with the setting in the preferences in iTunes but nothing works.

Apple El Capitan Software Bug Listing?

Does anyone know if there is a software bug listing for El Capitan anywhere to reference.

I'm getting a bit tired trying to get simple things to work which I find out eventually are bugs in the Apple software. Apple software used to be so much better than it is now.

The two latest ones I came across are both in Apple mail:

1. Turns out that one cannot create a new folder in the left pane (where the inbox etc. folders are) if that folder is a third subfolder or lower.
One has to create it as a second subfolder and then move it.

Took me a while to figure that out since creating a third and lower level subfolder always worked fine before.
But I eventually found that this was a problem when googling for it.

2. When one replies to an email one usually gets the little curly reply arrow to the left of the "from" column.
Very handy I find when one deals with hundreds of emails.
But stragely enough, if the sender name is very short, in my specific case it's "Tom" - that arrow does not show up when a reply has been sent.
Weird that the length of the sender's ID has anything to do with that.
Haven't researched that on google but for me it's very consistent - for Tom I never get the reply arrow, for a four character sender name I do.

R.I.P. Powers Boothe

Powers Boothe dead: Tombstone, Deadwood star dies at 68

Powers Boothe had a screen presence that lived up to his name.

The actor, who died Sunday at the age of 68, had an intensity onscreen that made you want to back up a few steps. His matinee idol good looks were subsumed by this force of will, which often led the actor to be cast as heavies, villains, madmen – and politicians.

“The heavies are more fun,” the actor told American Profile magazine in 2014. “And I think they’re more interesting.”

Boothe died in his sleep from apparent natural causes, his publicist, Karen Samfilippo, tells EW. His death first broke online through longtime friend Beau Bridges, who tweeted: “It’s with great sadness that I mourn the passing of my friend Powers Boothe. A dear friend, great actor, devoted father & husband.”

OS 10.9 Spotlight search result in reverse order

Earlier this year my friend asked me to upgrade his MBP from OS 10.6 to 10.9. I did that and things worked fine.

Yesterday he said that in recent days when he did a Spotlight search, the results inexplicably were shown in reverse order. i.e. the top of the list of the search result starts with "z" and "a" appears last. I took a look and couldn't find a way to make the list shown in the conventional ascending order a to z. This doesn't happen to me with Spotlight search as I am also running OS 10.9. I can't find a solution after doing a Google search.

Tips and help would appreciate.

Help? How usefuluseful is an older Mac pro?

HI folks... new user here, in fact... I've never even owned a mac! I have an outdated pc (1.8ghz processor is soldered to the motherboard and cant be changed, ram is maxed out at 8gb, on board video sucks and its a mini case with a little power supply, so adding an external video card is pointless... can't be upgraded) and now I'm thinking about purchasing an outdated Mac pro. LOL My question is, is it worth considering?

I'm looking at a used 2008 Mac pro. I know Mac pros are workhorses, and in new condition would be so far out of my reach, I wouldn't even consider it, but this seems like a good deal to me - if it will work for what I need. I would like to be able to edit video and music for my little YouTube channel. My pc can't handle 4K or 1080p 60fps video at all! I'd also like to be able to run my flight simulators. I'm wondering if you Mac guru''s can offer your opinion? What I know is this...

Mac Pro 2 x 3.0 GHz Quad 8-Core Intel Xeon Processor, 32 bit and 64 bit compatible Workstation, DVD Superdrive, 2GB Ram, 1.2TB HDD Storage, OS X, Ready for 2 Displays, Built to last and huge Expandability, Comes with Apple keyboard and Mouse and Retail Box, Great for Music or Video Production Studio, Nice clean Mac Pro, Not Used Much, Cost New Over $5000, Selling $499 OBO.

OK. .. so it's only got 2gb ram. I'm guessing that is the first thing that would need upgrading. Anyone know what ram this guy would need? I'm curious if the video card would be strong enough for my needs?

Thanks in advance for any advise you may have!

eMail Photo Attachments disappearing

I don't know if it is the result of upgrading to macOS Sierra on both my iMac 27" (Core i7 Mid 2011) and my wife's MacBook Air.

When I have been sending her photos as attachments from my iMac, the attachment icons would show up on my email. Then the bottom line would show that the attachment slowly "draining". Then the attachment would disappear.

Some times I would sent her 2 photos and only one would appear.

Is this an indication that there is a problem with Sierra 10.12.4

I some times these photos have been modified by Photoshop.

I have downloaded "Airmail 3" thinking the the Mail program is faulty. But I am getting the same results.

Any suggestions?

How to get improved security on Macbook Pro

One of the MacBook pros in my family has a lot of extremely confidential information on it that I know some organizations we deal with would love to get access to.

I'm wondering what security is available for the Mac over and above the built in capability which is relatively easy to defeat.

What I'm thinking about is something like the iphone where the hard disk is erased securely if the wrong password is entered more than "x" times.
It should also not possible to take out the hard drive and access the data that way.

Any suggestions?

For Sale 2011 15" MacBook Pro, BTO, 2.5GHz, HiRes Display

I work from home using personal Mac (currently iMac). I bought this MBP a couple of years ago so I wouldn't need to use company Windows laptop when traveling. And have not traveled since.

When I bought it, it was relatively lightly used and I have not used it a lot since. Battery cycle count is around 420. The only issue is cosmetic - a bump in the aluminum near right edge due to drop or other incident before I got it (see second photo).

If this ad interests you, then you likely know that the 2011 and pre-Retina 2012 models are still strong performers with the quad core i7 processor and dual graphics processor.

Memory and disk are easily upgraded. What you can't add if you buy elsewhere are the BTO (build to order) upgrades:

° 2.5 GHz processort (base model is 2.2 GHz)
° 1680 x 1050 HiRes display (standard is 1440x900)

Apart from that it has standard 4GB memory, 750GB hard drive, SuperDrive, original MagSafe charger, etc. Full details at MacBook Pro "Core i7" 2.5 15" Late 2011 Specs (Late 2011 15", BTO/CTO, MacBookPro8,2, A1286, 2563*) @ EveryMac.com

Asking $720. That's great value, even without the BTO extras.

I would prefer to sell to a local buyer in Ottawa, but will ship (within Canada) at cost.

Deleted Time Machine, Can't Empty Trash

Hey everyone,

A few days ago I was having some troubles with my Time Machine external drive, so I decided to reassign to a temporary hard drive until I bought a new one. Once I bought my new drive and reassigned again, I wanted to clear the TM back up off my temp drive so I could resume using it for other things.

Problem is, after having dragged the TM backup to the trash, I now can't empty it. Every 2 seconds I get an error saying "The operation can't be completed because the item 'item' is in use."

Even after restarting, these items are still in use, even though Time Machine is technically writing to an all new drive. And I can't use Activity Monitor to quit TM for some reason—it doesn't let me.

I'd really like to avoid formatting that temp drive, as I have other things on it and it would save me a bit of headache having to move other things off it in order to format it and then move them back.

Any ideas on how to get this darn trash to empty?

Thanks!
