Why use https instead of http for 'non-secure' connections?

Not strictly a Mac question but still technical, so I posted it here.

I'm finding that more and more "ordinary" websites are starting to use the https prototcol instead of the "normal" http protocol.
I mean sites like forums, discussion groups, blogs etc. - sites where encryption is really not warranted.
Problem is that these sites are often not set up correctly or the certificate has expired or the certificate is not a full and complete match with the result that one cannot connect to the site.

Just happened to me again - a site I have been going to for years seems to have moved from http to https with the result that the site is now unreachable.

I have emailed the admin who I happen to know personally but I wanted to ask the IT experts here if there is some valid reason for "ordinary" sites to move to the https protocol?
The only thing I can possibly think of is that https sites are more difficult to hack, but I'm not sure if that is actually true.
I assume there is some valid reason since setting up an https site and maintaining a security certificate is extra effort and costs extra money.

Your oldest working Mac?

Another thread on a 2010 MBP inspired this.

What is your oldest Mac that is still used regularly? What are you doing with it?

From me, I have a 2008 (?) Core Duo Mini running Lion that is a 'buildbot' for an open source software project. It sits in a corner and compiles a large software system every time there is a change committed to the project's repository. It doesn't matter that it takes 30-40 minutes to complete the build. The developers (all on Linux) get notified if they make a change that breaks the build on OS X. I've been doing this for about 2 years now.

I also have a Mac SE from 1990 that still runs. I have it set up as a 'prop' in an old house we're trying to sell. I wanted a room to look like an office and the SE helps with that and is a conversation piece. But I don't use it in any regular way so it is kind of outside the scope of this thread.

What is my mac worth?

I have a 2010 13" mbp with the 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 8GB ram, and 500GB HDD (it was top of the line at the time).

Battery has just over 500 cycles.

Laptop hasn't been used much over the past 3 years - it was mine, then I got a new one and this became my wife's. She mostly uses mine.

It runs well. Installed Sierra on it.

I'll be wiping it before selling, just curious about what to ask for it.

There are some minor scratches on the aluminum part of the lid - thanks to my daughter!! argh...

MacBook 2012/13: Parts shortage = New Laptop!

Apple replacing old MacBooks with brand-new models due to spare parts shortage
According to internal documents seen by MacRumors, Apple is exchanging older 2012 and 2013 MacBook Pros with brand-new models, thanks to a shortage of spare parts. Customers who bring in their older MacBook Pros for battery replacement — a $200 out-of-warranty repair, or free with AppleCare+ — are receiving brand-new laptops instead of a new battery.

The unusual move is thanks to a “severe constraint of top case assemblies with integrated batteries” for the mid-2012 or early 2013 15-inch MacBook Pro. In the case of that laptop, it appears that Apple prefers its local repair technicians to replace the entire top case assembly for a battery replacement, even though iFixit appears to show that the battery is replaceable with a couple of specialized screws.

R.I.P. John Heard

Actor John Heard, of 'Home Alone' movies, dies at 72

Actor John Heard, whose many roles included the father in the "Home Alone" series and a corrupt detective in "The Sopranos," has died. He was 72.

His death was confirmed Saturday by the Santa Clara Medical Examiner's office in California. TMZ reported that Heard, who lived in southern California, was found at a Palo Alto, California, hotel where he was recovering from back surgery.

Heard played Peter McCallister, the father of Kevin, played by Macaulay Culkin, in "Home Alone" and "Home Alone 2: Lost in New York." He said in later interviews that he sought a movie with kids in it so his son, age 5 at the time, could come to the set and have someone to play with.

After it became a big hit, he was reluctant to revisit the role but his agent convinced him the money was too good to pass up.

"I didn't want to be the 'Home Alone' dad for the rest of my life," he told Yahoo! News in 2013.

He was born March 7, 1945, in Washington, D.C. and grew up performing in local theatre. One of his memorable early roles was as a disabled Vietnam War veteran in the 1981 film "Cutter's Way."

He was active in film for the next decade, playing Tom Hanks' rival in "Big," actress Geraldine Page's son in "The Trip to Bountiful" and in the movies "The Pelican Brief," ''Beaches," ''Gladiator," ''Rambling Rose" and "After Hours."

He earned an Emmy nomination for playing Vin Makazian in "The Sopranos." Television also kept him busy. He acted in "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation," ''Elementary," ''Prison Break," ''Modern Family" and "Entourage." One of his favourite jobs came in the original "Sharknado" television movie in 2013.

HELP!! Browser decides which websites I can go on

Had a few days of super slow computer operation so decided to run a few clearing programs - malware, CC Cleaner, BItdefender - none found anything.

So ...DH did a diskscan - and all was OK, checked some of the permissions and apparently they were off - so he reset a few.

Now - 3 days later - my Opera browser will not go on the internet - either via wifi or cabled
Safari - cabled - chooses a select few websites that it will go on - others - it just refuses
-wifi- Safari goes on a few more websites - but still fussy about which ones

What on earth is my problem?

Java for El Capitan

I need Java to play this game
Ruscell online

Used to play it on 10.6.8 but when I upgraded a MBp to El Capitan I can't get Java to run

Downloaded it from the Oracle website.
Firefox claims this plug-in is not supported, Chrome the same and Safari won't let me install it even after I set the security to allow any app.

How can I get Java to run in preferably FF or as an alternative option in another browser?

Email with privacy

This may seem like an odd request - but I am looking for a free email program where provider doesn't give a long list of what they can do and how they can screen my emails.

I believe the Canadian ISP providers do this - ie my emails are not subject to their browsing and understand the biggies - Google, Yahoo and any other US one has no such qualms (to leave my email in peace).

We have done a little research and find that Nili is a Canadian provider - so would be subject to the Canadian laws (because they house the emails in Canada) - however, I have applied to them for an email address (over a month ago) and have not heard back - so I have no idea when they might deign to 'invite' me to have a new address.

DH has searched out other alternatives and finds that proton.com is European (Swiss I think) based and emails are very private. However, they only offer an 'app' and the emails can not be put into my mail account.

Does anyone know of a private provider of emails -preferably free?

Thank you

R.I.P. Martin Landau (Space:1999, among many others)

Martin Landau Dead: "Ed Wood," "Mission: Impossible" Actor Was 89

Martin Landau, the all-purpose actor who showcased his versatility as a master of disguise on the Mission: Impossible TV series and as a broken-down Bela Lugosi in his Oscar-winning performance in Ed Wood, has died. He was 89.

Landau, who shot to fame by playing a homosexual henchman in Alfred Hitchcock’s 1959 classic North by Northwest, died Saturday of "unexpected complications" after a brief stay at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center, his rep confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter.

After he quit CBS’ Mission: Impossible after three seasons in 1969 because of a contract dispute, Landau’s career was on the rocks until he was picked by Francis Ford Coppola to play Abe Karatz, the business partner of visionary automaker Preston Tucker (Jeff Bridges), in Tucker: The Man and His Dream (1988).

Landau received a best supporting actor nomination for that performance, then backed it up the following year with another nom for starring as Judah Rosenthal, an ophthalmologist who has his mistress (Angelica Huston) killed, in Woody Allen’s Crimes and Misdemeanors (1989).

Landau lost out on Oscar night to Kevin Kline and Denzel Washington, respectively, in those years but finally prevailed for his larger-than-life portrayal of horror-movie legend Lugosi in the biopic Ed Wood (1994), directed by Tim Burton.

Landau also starred as Commander John Koenig on the 1970s science-fiction series Space: 1999 opposite his Mission: Impossible co-star Barbara Bain, his wife from 1957 until their divorce in 1993.

A former newspaper cartoonist, Landau turned down the role of Mr. Spock on the NBC series Star Trek, which went to Leonard Nimoy (who later effectively replaced Landau on Mission: Impossible after Trek was canceled).

R.I.P. George Romero

RIP George Romero, the Man Behind the Modern Zombie

George Romero, the legendary filmmaker who changed the horror world forever with Night of the Living Dead and its sequels, has died of lung cancer at the age of 77.

Romero will be forever remembered for his iconic contribution to horror, not just through his birth of the zombie genre as we know it today in 1968's Night of the Living Dead and its litany of sequels all the way up to 2009's Survival of the Dead, but for his work on Creepshow, Monkey Shine, The Dark Half, and dozens of other film and TV projects. Romero was still working even this year, recently unveiling plans for a new of the Dead film about NASCAR zombies.

New Access Point - with future proof features, speeds up to 2.6Gps

I am testing a new Access Point i got for free as a reseller, I am putting it through the ringer.
Areohive AP250 features dual radio, 3x3:3 MU MIMO, providing full 802.11ac technology performance with data rates up to 2.6 Gbps per access point using existing 802.3af PoE infrastructure. Built-in Bluetooth Low Energy for iBeacon/ other beacon technologies,

But i named it “Searching…”
that has confused me so many times lol
every time i check the wifi it says Searching… LOL

I am able to achieve 1.3Gbps - but nothing more - that makes senses as i only have a gigabyte switch and Cat 5E wiring in the house, to achieve speeds faster than that would depending switch, wiring and end point like my devices.

I am using the dual 5Ghz with band steering to alleviate congestion

As for the RF, Bluetooth features are great but more in a retail or resort environment so you can track 'hotspots', popular locations in a store as well as merchandise etc.

Where is my iTunes library?

Hi
I bought a used 2014 Mac mini to replace a iMac. I used SuperDuper to have my hd copied on an external hd and migration assistant to copy the hd from the external hd to my actual dd.

Now, when I open iTunes, my cd library is nowhere to be found. Where could it be? I hope I don't have to rip every cd again!

Thanks for the help.

Suggestions wanted for a new cd/dvd reader/writer

Hi
I just bought a new (for me) Mac mini late 2014. These come without a cd/dvd reader/writer. What would be an external decent one that does not require two usb wires to be plugged in the mini? I mean fast enough while plugged into only one usb slot.

There is the Apple one, but apart from it, any suggestions?

Nice site for learning songs!

Hello all, this year I rewarded myself with the purchase of a baby Gibson 12 string. It has been years since I last played and was looking for some folk songs to reacquaint myself with the genre. I came across this site and thought I would share if anyone out there is interested. I know there are "tab" sites out there but this one is really a song book : Sing-Along Guitar Songs: Transposable Chords & Lyrics (listed by title) If anyone knows of others I would be interested.

Thanx

Apple Extended Magic Keyboard with numerical pad

So i received the new Apple Numerical wireless keyboard..
here is my quick review
compared to the Matias Wireless Full size Keyboard
the apple keyboard lays much more flat which is a lot more awkward to type as your hands are closer to the table, as well being flat means they fit less batteries and therefore more charging..

The Matias is rated for 1 month between charges and I can attest to that.
I actually prefer typing on the Matias keyboard rather than the apple keyboard but i guess my brain has to relearn the spaces between the keys.

The largest pet peeve with the apple keyboard is the fact it sounds like high heels on hardwood floor, so much for typing in a library lol

The positives with the Apple Keyboard - it has a power on/off slide switch on the keyboard, plus it uses lightening cable to charge vs mini usb.

Jawbone is toast

I would never have expected this...

Once innovative wearable brand Jawbone goes into liquidation
Jawbone has announced it's shutting down and liquidating its assets. The 18-year-old technology company, best known in recent years for its work in the wearables market, was once worth $3 billion. It's one of the biggest tech firms ever to collapse.

The decision is expected to lead to losses for the investors who have ploughed millions of dollars into Jawbone over the past few years. The Financial Times said that several of Silicon Valley's most respected venture capitalists will be impacted by the fallout of the shutdown.

Jawbone was founded as Aliph in 1999, gaining a name for itself in Bluetooth accessories and wireless speakers. Under the Jawbone brand, the company was an early participant in the wearables market. Its UP wristbands have seen success but have also faced stiff competition, primarily from Fitbit.

At its height in 2015, Jawbone was valued at $3.3 billion.

This is disaster for all pics in the entire pic database hosted by Photobucket.

We on EhMac will not be able to see pics hosted on PhotoBucket anymore, thus losing valuable info in old threads.
