Not strictly a Mac question but still technical, so I posted it here.
I'm finding that more and more "ordinary" websites are starting to use the https prototcol instead of the "normal" http protocol.
I mean sites like forums, discussion groups, blogs etc. - sites where encryption is really not warranted.
Problem is that these sites are often not set up correctly or the certificate has expired or the certificate is not a full and complete match with the result that one cannot connect to the site.
Just happened to me again - a site I have been going to for years seems to have moved from http to https with the result that the site is now unreachable.
I have emailed the admin who I happen to know personally but I wanted to ask the IT experts here if there is some valid reason for "ordinary" sites to move to the https protocol?
The only thing I can possibly think of is that https sites are more difficult to hack, but I'm not sure if that is actually true.
I assume there is some valid reason since setting up an https site and maintaining a security certificate is extra effort and costs extra money.
