R.I.P. Richard Anderson (Six Million Dollar Man)

"Six Million Dollar Man" Star Richard Anderson Dead at 91

Richard Anderson -- who played the government agent who cooked up the idea for "The Six Million Dollar Man" and "The Bionic Woman" in the 1970s -- has died.

Anderson passed away Thursday at his Beverly Hills home, according to his publicist. He famously portrayed OSI honcho Oscar Goldman on both TV shows. It's his voice you hear in the show open talking about making Steve Austin "the world's first bionic man."

He had nearly 200 roles during his six-decade career ... starring in movies as well as huge TV shows in the '60s and '70s, including "Bonanza," "Hawaii Five-O" and "The Mod Squad."

Richard was 91.

iTunes Media or Music folder?

Why do I have two folders, one called iTunes Media and one called iTunes Music? Especially when there are "Music" folders in each of them?

It feels like somewhere along the way, Apple decided to change how it managed media, and created a new folder without deleting the old one.

The problem is, I don't know which folder is being used by iTunes, and they have slightly different contents, as the iTunes Media folder is a few GB larger than the iTunes Music folder.

I'm afraid to delete either one, despite the fact that they're probably largely duplicates of each other and taking up a lot of space on my HD.

Any thoughts?

RIP Skip Prokop, founder of Lighthouse

Lighthouse co-founder and drummer Skip Prokop dead at 74

Damn.

Always been a big fan of Lighthouse. Loved the brass. Resigned myself to the fact that I'd never have the chance to see them perform live after they broke up.

Along come the early 90's & I read that Lighthouse is going to be performing on the outdoor stage at the Calgary Stampede midweek. I excitedly made plans to attend & pack my lovely bride to be along with me after work. We show up, park our butts on the grass as close to the stage as we can get & thoroughly enjoy the concert. Quite a treat.

After the show my GF encourages me to go backstage & talk to the band. I did & had a chance to chat with them for a few minutes. Afterwards we headed over to one of the beer tents for a cold brew. Few minutes later Skip & the boys pass by looking for a place to sit in a crowded tent.

We invited them to sit with us & they bellied up. We sat & talked for more than an hour. What a rush!

Skip, today I'll crank up One Fine morning, among others, crack & cold brew & hoist one in your honour. RIP, my friend.

For Sale PowerBook 180 - Free

Free

Hi,

I cleaned house and found a PowerBook 180.
I think that's the second portable we got from our company many moons ago.
I assume it works but the battery is toast I'm sure and I don't have a power adapter to try it.

Before I throw it out I thought I post it here in case someone collects old Macs

The unit is free but has to be picked up either in Belleville or Cornwall, possibly also in Ottawa or Montreal since I travel there sometimes. Only come to Toronto very seldom.

PM me if interested

PS: Just checked a bit closer, on this unit the battery is actually missing and one of the knobs of the hinge is missing but the hinge works fine without it.
I remember when I still used it that that knob was missing for most of its useful life.

business vs residential internet services

I find it very offensive and entertaining how the incumbents treat business clients.

i have a client - who is moving to a location with very limited internet options.

I did an address look up for viability -
rogers is looking for $10k to do the installation lol
bell is offering 50/10 dsl for $60/month for residential and 25/10 for $80/month for business..

so i ended up going with a 3rd party as residential set up. even cheaper but still 50/10

I will never understand the discrepancy and why there has to be one for personal vs business.

Trying to connect my camera to my desktop

Sorry, I can't manage to delete this ... if somebody else would, that'd be great. It seems I can only edit it. I basically said "F*ck the camera" and used my iPad instead. :)

I have a seven-year-old Mac Mini and a PowerShot A540. I am trying to hook the PowerShot up to the Mini to download some photos of the swimming pool in the back yard (note: we don't HAVE a swimming pool back there ... normally).

I have the cord plugged into the Mini and attached to the PowerShot, which is on, but absolutely nothing is happening. All I'm getting when I open the Photo program is a file of photos that I previously downloaded.

I should add that my Mini has a whole 2GB of memory and I made the error of installing the latest OS on it. It still operates after a fashion, but I know -- now -- that the memory and the OS was not a good mix. I'm not intending to do anything with the Mini; I plan to just save up my pennies and replace it with a newer model.

Any suggestions regarding the camera and the desktop would be greatly appreciated.

Using a WD my cloud drive as a time machine backup?

Hi, I'm currently interested in buying two western digital (WD) my cloud hard drives. I would like to have one, as my media drive (music/photos mainly). I would like to use the other as a time machine backup.

Now, I know i can use one of the drives as a time machine backup. However, I want to backup the media drive onto the time machine backup as well.

These drives are NAS drives, pretty much. Will this work? I want to know a head of time, because each drive is like $200+, so I don't want to waste $400+ dollars to find out, it doesn't work.

I currently use two usb drives. One usb for time machine, and the other for media. I can use my current usb time machine drive to backup my media drive. It works fine. Now just wondering if I convert both drives into WD my cloud drives, if the setup would work.

Thanks, Phu.

Can two broken MacBooks = One good one ???

I have two 13 inch MacBook Pros which I'm wodering if I can combine them to make one "good" one.

Trouble is that one is an early 2011 and the other a late 2011, so it really depends on the internal changes between the two.

The early 2011 has a cracked screen and a keyboard with a couple of defective keys, a quirky trackpad and a battery that is toast but otherwise works perferctly. Processor is a 2.3 GHz i5

The late 2011 had coffee spilled on it so at least the mother board is probably toast - don't know yet about the keyboard.
But otherwise that Mac ran perfectly, processor there is a 2.4GHz i5.
The battery on that one is almost new, so is the trackpad and the keyboard.

So the choice is to either put the early 2011 motherboard into the late 2011. assuming it fits and is the same other than the processor, or
Take the display and keyboard/trackpad (assuming it's OK) from the late 2011 and replace these defective items on the early 2011.

Anyone know if I can trade these parts between the early and late 2011 Macs and if so - which would be the better/easier way to go.
I assum the battery is the same on both.

Can a 2010 13-inch MacBook Pro run 1600 DDR3?

Hi,

I hve a late 2011 MacBook Pro that came with 1333 DDR3 RAM; I upgraded it using 1600 DDR3 RAM and that worked fine.

That Mac just took an accidental coffee bath so it needs to be replacd - don't think there is any point trying to fix it.
I can get a 2010 MacBook Pro for $400-$500 as a replacement, just wondering if anyone knows if the 2010 can also use 1600 DDR3 RAM since I want to use the 16 GB I have in the 2011 unit.

Thanks

Search function... now even worse!

So the search function employed here at ehMac has been long lamented. The inability to search, for example, three-letter terms is a major PITA.

I've always gotten around that by using Google ( "searchterm site:ehmac.ca")

But today, for some reason, although Google returns a bunch of results that are relevant, clicking on the link no longer takes you to the post in question - it just takes you to the last page in the thread.

No idea if this is a vbulletin issue or a Google Search issue, but I'm rather peeved....

U.S. Navy hits (another) ship

First the U.S.S. Ferguson, now the U.S.S. John McCain.

Did they recently change instructors at the Navy's ship-driving school, or what?
Ten sailors are missing and five injured after a US destroyer collided with an oil tanker off the coast of Singapore, the US Navy says.

The USS John McCain was sailing east of Singapore and preparing to stop in the port when it struck the Liberian-flagged vessel.

A wide-ranging search and rescue operation is under way.

It is the second serious collision involving a US Navy ship in recent months.

R.I.P. Dick Gregory, comedian & civil rights figure

Dick Gregory, comedian and civil rights advocate, dead at 84

LOS ANGELES — Dick Gregory, the comedian and activist and who broke racial barriers in the 1960s and used his humour to spread messages of social justice and nutritional health, has died. He was 84.

Gregory died late Saturday in Washington, D.C. after being hospitalized for about a week, his son Christian Gregory told The Associated Press. He had suffered a severe bacterial infection.

As one of the first black standup comedians to find success with white audiences, in the early 1960s, Gregory rose from an impoverished childhood in St. Louis to win a college track scholarship and become a celebrated satirist who deftly commented upon racial divisions at the dawn of the civil rights movement.

"Where else in the world but America," he joked, "could I have lived in the worst neighbourhoods , attended the worst schools, rode in the back of the bus, and get paid $5,000 a week just for talking about it?"

Gregory's sharp commentary soon led him into civil rights activism, where his ability to woo audiences through humour helped bring national attention to fledgling efforts at integration and social equality for blacks.

Which Video Converter do people use now to replace Visual Hub?

When Visual Hub was still available it was pretty much the only converter I used.

I'm wondering which video converter people use today with El Capitan.

I tried Video Monkey to convert a QT file to MP4.
Conversion seems to be OK but the audio level is way down from the original.

On Visual Hub one could increase the audio by up to 300% but there doesn't seem to be any option on Video Monkey to do the same thing.

I don't think the audio levels should change when converting but they often do.

How to download a video if URL doesn't show?

When I need to download a video, I usually do a right click on the video that shows me the URL and then use Clip Grab to download the video.

Now I have a video I want to save on my Mac to play when I don't have an internet connection, but a right click brings up nothing.

So what are the options to download this video - nothing I have tried in the last hour works.

How to initial and sign a pdf document

I have to initial each page and sign one page of a pdf document quite often.

I used to use Adobe Acrobat to do this but now I need to do this also on a Mac that doesn't have Acrobat installed so I was looking for some other options rather than buy Abrobat again.
It's a bit cumbersome with Acrobat anyway.

So I came across this video which explains how to do this using only preview

Seems very straight forward and very simple and quick to use once the signature is set up, but....
When I open the first pdf I want to try this on in preview, there is no "Edit" icon.
I have the "Marker" icon (pencil on a line) but not the "Edit" icon (pencil in a box).
Checked my toolbox - nothing
Running El Capitan so the icon should be there but it isn't.

Came across a fewe posts on google where people have the same issue - but no resolution.

Any suggestions what I need to do/check to get that "Edit" icon into my preview toolbar?

PS: Preview version shows as 8.1

Any way to find password on encrypted external?

Hi,

I have an external drive that launches fine on my Mac Mini but is looking for a password when I connect it to my MacBook pro.

Both Macs ar running the same OS, El Capitan.

I assume I originally had the password to open the hard drive on the Mini but can't remember for the life of me what it is now.

After I open the external drive on the Mini, is there any place I can check what the password is?
If I do a right click on the external (on my desktop) I have an option to "decrypt" that external. I suppose I could do that and then encrypt it again with a new password but I'm a bit hesitant to do that since I can't afford to somehow screw up the drive or the info on it.

upgrading 2012 iMac hard drive

One of the computers at work is a 2012 iMac, the first of the slim models with no super drive. It is used for prepress and graphics using Adobe CC (Indesign, Illustrator and Photoshop). It has a traditional hard drive which can be very slow at times, seems to move like a turtle to me but I am using a 5k iMac with 1TB flash drive so anything less is unbearable.

Anyways, I was thinking I should upgrade the hard drive to an SSD, but prices are a bit high for that and not sure if there is any direct swap of a regular hard drive to an SSD, as well as fan issues.

Will this machine support a fusion drive? I am assuming yes but want to be sure. Second, does Apple do these kind of swaps? It has always felt like pulling nails to get any information for upgrades or work done on a computer that was not in warranty.

Airport Express issue - a/n mode.

I have an older type Airport Express (the wall-wart type). It was the first version to do "n" level networking. I used it primarily to extend a network based on and Airport Extreme of the same vintage. It worked well enough and ran in the 2.4GHz bandwidth, operating in B/G/N mode (this is an important note - see later). I use WiFi Express to scan my networks.

I recently replaced the Extreme with one of the latest tower types.

The behaviour of the Express has changed. According to WiFi Express, the Express is now operating in A/N mode on the 5GHz band which is of no use to me. I would like to somehow revert it to B/G/N mode in the 2.4 band...... It is connecting to the base network because it works for AirPlay.

Any suggestions gratefully received.

TIA

Warped ESL lessons

Thought I would offer some of my lesson thoughts here to get your thoughts. I know we have a number of educators here.

In this lesson I try to personalise positive traits. I give each student a name tag and have them print in small letters their first name. I then have them circle the 3rd letter of their name and think of a positive trait which begins with that letter.

This would then become their new first name. My first name is Paul so I would circle the U, and would use "Understanding" as an example. I would then have the students print their new name in large letters on the name tag and reintroduce the students to each other by their new name, with a brief explanation of the trait.

Through the rest of the class the students would have to "act" the trait. So, try this yourself, circle the letter of your first name and for the rest of the day act as the chosen new trait name.... would be interested in your new names.
