iPhone 8: Swollen Battery Syndrome?

Ooopsie.

iPhone 8 Plus reportedly splits open while charging, another claimed to arrive in same state

A Taiwanese iPhone 8 Plus owner has claimed that her device split open while being charged with the supplied cable and plug adapter. She posted photos which show damage consistent with a swollen battery.

A Japanese owner has posted similar photos of his device, which he says arrived in this state …

The first device affected is being examined by Apple, reports ifeng (via TNW).

* * *

While any incident affecting a new iPhone model is bound to attract media attention, it’s worth noting the usual disclaimers. First, any device manufactured in the millions will include some faulty models – the real news would be if this were not the case. Second, investigations into charging-related incidents often reveal that a third-party charger was used, even when an owner initially claims to have used the supplied Apple one.

Files open using wrong apps

I have a problem with my computer opening files using oddball applications. For example, I have instructed the computer to open all images using Photoshop--it keeps forgetting this and reverts to Adobe Illustrator. All text files are opening in a computer script program, even though I repeatedly "GET INFO" and tell the computer which application to use, then tell it to apply that rule to all similar files. Also, the names of images downloaded from the Internet are edited so that "picture.jpg" becomes "picture" and is not recognized as an image. I've made sure that my security settings are not preventing applications from opening.

Any ideas?

Transfer Apps to new iPad Pro

Okay, so I just received my iPad Pro. I first backed up my old iPad. I then set up my iPad Pro as a new iPad (which has a different name). I chose this way since I didn't just want to do a Restore. When connecting my new iPad, I no longer see all my apps in iTunes to transfer over. Strange. On my last iPad, I had also set it up as new and just transferred over the app I wanted from the old iPad. The only difference this time is that my new iPad Pro has a slightly different name.
(I just changed the name of my new iPad Pro to the old name in Settings-General-About and reconnected to iTunes, but, still no Apps).

iTunes kind of changed as all the Apps are now listed under File Sharing, but all I see there now is the built in 5 Apple Apps.

What am I missing?

Hi Gang,

Why is my 2016 mbp startup slower than my previous mac mini???

So just a general question, maybe some of you might be able to answer. I own a 2016 mbp for about a month or so now. Used to own a 2012 mac mini.

here are the specs.

mbp 2.6ghz quad core i7
16gb ram
256 pcie ssd (at least i think that's what it has)

here are the specs for my previous mac mini (I sold it, do not own it any more)

2.3ghz i7 quad core
16gb ram
250gb samsung 840 ssd

So disclaimer, I didn't run any side by side test. This is just overall feel of the speed.

One thing i noticed both on Sierra (not high sierra). The mac mini would startup a lot faster. Which makes no sense to me. The mini has a slower core speed, and the ssd is a lot old, and its not pcie.

When it comes to geekbench, the mbp beats it. I do remember the multicore score of my mini to be around 12,000 give or take a bit. mbp gets around 14,400 multicore. I'm not sure if startup even uses multicore processors. I can't clearly remember what the single core scores were, but I'm sure the mbp beat my previous mini in that catagory as well.

I've also test the ssd speeds. The mbp gets about 2000 read speed in black magic disk speed test. I remember the mini get somewhere around 400 in read speed. Write speeds, was even slower in the mini.

So why would a mac mini start up faster?

fyi, overall speed after startup is faster on my mbp though. I won't be buying another 2012 mac mini, but i was curious to see if any body had any insight on why a slower machine would be faster on startup?

Question about prepping Macs for resale

I have a number of old family Macbooks that have been gathering dust after upgrades. Time to sell them. I read the Apple support article:

http://ift.tt/1aL1gRN

After reformatting the HD, I'm going to assume you need a disc to reinstall the OS. Or, is there a hidden utility partition that allows you to reinstall.

If I wipe the computer and set it to factory state, then the prospective buyer would not be able to test the computer without going through the setup process. Would it better to somehow wipe the computer of private information and leave the current OS? Not sure if I can actually do that with a high degree of confidence.

Any advice is appreciated.

Parallels vs VMware Fusion

I have been using Parallels for a number of years, I like how it works, it is simple and never gives me any trouble. I have been annoyed with the cash grab they go after with each MacOS update. I do need Windows for a few apps that are Windows only.

I was contemplating moving to VMware Fusion. I used it many years ago but opted for parallels at the time. Any reason to stay away from VMware? Are they doing something similar or does their software survive the regular MacOS updates with little to no problems that are fixed by simple software updates?

USB Tethering with iPad Pro

HI Gang,

I'm trying my best to move my photography workflow to include only my iPad. Mostly because my iMac is on its death bed, but also because I feel we should almost be at the point where it's possible.

That may or may not work out, but, what I'm wondering is if anyone knows of a solution to USB tether a DSLR to an iPad, and use the iPad to control shooting? I have the lightning to USB dongle, and it works for importing, but I'm curious about actually controlling the camera. FWIW, it's a Nikon D7100.

For Sale Original Scroll Wheel iPod

Well cleaning out my desk drawer.

The original iPod. 5Gb, model M8541 which is the first model iPod.

Picked it up years ago for cheap as the seller had no clue if it worked as they had no FireWire charger. Needless to say I have one and am including it with the iPod.

Unit gets 3-4 hours of battery life which is pretty good for something old. Original batter and condition is good. Case has no huge scratches and just some marks from normal use. Face is in good shape with one scratch on the scroll wheel.

Will be going up on eBay for $300. So that’s the current asking price, or best offer. Let me know if you’re interested.

Clearing Photos off IPhone 5

How do I clear the photos off my IPhone 5 without losing them entirely. They are on the ICloud .
I have searched and all I get is complicated responses and telling to be careful or you will delete them off the cloud and they are gone. One site has 27 answers and stats off with "The short answer is that you can't easily do this – at least not in any way that's practical for normal use."....and they are right, there is no definitive way.
Is there a simple way to delete them off the phone but still have them in the cloud and in Photos on my Mac?

Bayshore Ottawa lineup?

Hi folks,

So I'm going to upgrade to an 8+. At first, shipping and availability was the 22nd. Now they won't guarantee an in-store pick up on the 22nd which means demand has increased.

I was thinking of lining up at the Ottawa Bayshore location because well, I get up early.

1. Just wondering how many people typically line up at this store for a release? I've never been. I know this release has been different with people probably waiting for the X and/or not interested in the 8's.

2. Or could it mean that there's no more in-store availability that they're in-store stock is now spoken for with pre-orders?

Again, no experience doing it this way.

Cheers,
Brian

Mexico City Earthquake

Mexico City hit by powerful 7.1 magnitude earthquake

Quote:

A powerful earthquake jolted Mexico City on Tuesday, causing buildings to sway sickeningly on the anniversary of a 1985 quake that did major damage to the capital.

The extent of damage or injuries was not immediately clear, but people fled office buildings along the central Reforma Avenue.

Mexico's seismological agency calculated its preliminary magnitude at 7.1 and said its center was east of the city in the state of Puebla.

EasyCap to record VHS tape - no sound

Hi,

Is anyone using EasyCap to record VHS tapes on the Mac?

The video recording works fine but I can't get any audio.

The EasyCap device plugs into a USB port on the Mac - the audio from the VHS recorder feeds the same USB port but no matter what I try, a USB port doesn't show as an audio in option in preferences (which is what I would expect)

Along the same lines - one is supposed to be able to use USB mikes with the Mac.
Anyone use one of these?
How do you set up a USB port as an audio in port?

R.I.P. Henry Dean Stanton

Legendary Actor Harry Dean Stanton dies at 91

Harry Dean Stanton, an instantly recognizable character actor whose career spanned seven decades, died of natural causes in Los Angeles today. He was 91 years old.

Most recently, fans enjoyed Stanton as he reprised his role as Carl Rodd, the kindly trailer park manager, who returned to the new Twin Peaks. But that was just one on a huge list of roles fans will remember the actor for.

Science fiction fans probably remember him best as Brett, the cat-loving Nostromo crew member in the original Alien. But again, that’s just one of many memorable turns in the career of this living legend.

Gunsmoke, Rawhide, Escape from New York, Christine, Repo Man, Red Dawn, Paris Texas, Wild at Heart, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Big Love, the list goes on and on. He even became a part of the MCU a few years ago, with a small role in The Avengers.

Stanton’s unmistakable face and incredible range meant he could do anything in front of a camera. And anytime he was in front of one, you could never take your eyes off him. His long, distinguished career will stand as a monument to one of the greatest character actors to ever grace the screen.

iPhone storage: how much for a music listener?

I'm looking for a new iPhone to last me for the next 4 years. This is what I use a phone for:
  • Music storage: about 40GB
  • Photos: about 1GB
  • Podcasts: download to listen offline, about 2GB max??
  • Watching videos: from nytimes.com or other sources (FB, etc)
No gaming is done.

I'm looking at either the iPhone 7 or 8, 64GB or 128GB? Which capacity is best if I want to make sure that in the next few years I can use my phone for the above mentioned things, and also downloads and iOS updates that may increase in time are handled well on my phone?

iPhone X and more

Things certainly have changed in the Mac community and here on ehMac. A new release of a new iPhone, updates and such and not a single thread... at least that I have seen. I am not surprised though, the magic, innovation and excitement seems to be gone from new Apple releases. While the iPhone X looks very cool, there is not a whole lot there, at least not enough to say this iPhone X is like the first iPhone to be released and will change everything.

I have to say Apples smugness has gotten very annoying with everything being "amazing" and "the best thing ever". What was really released? Some nice things for sure, wireless charging, not game changing and has been out for a long time on Android phones, facial recognition, again a nice feature but not new and been out on Android. The better camera is a given and really they make way to big a deal about that. Every flagship phone gets these updates, better battery, better camera, better screen, faster cpu, etc.

Pretty much since the inception of the iPhone I have bought a new iPhone with each release. With sky rocketing prices of the iPhone X and really not a whole lot of "wow" outside of the nerdy love of that big screen with almost no bezel, I cannot see a huge improvement over my 7 plus, at least nothing that is really going to benefit me greatly. I like wireless charging but I am not paying $1500 for that feature. Also feels like a slap in the face and a real greed move by Apple ( I know I know they are out to make money) by getting rid of the 128 gig model. 64 gigs is to small, 256 is way to big, 128 was perfect and had a better price point for me and I am sure there are a few others who feel the same. Same thing goes for the Apple Watch. Instead of lowering the price of the Apple Watch 2 to make way for the 3, they remove the 2 altogether and keep the Apple Watch 1 and 3. I would buy a reduced price Apple Watch 2. I currently use a fitbit but like the Apple Watch better, other then the price.

I am not getting ride of my Apple products by any means, but I am certainly not spending near as much as I used to. I also do not think Apple will change or do anything better, outside of bigger and better emojis and better cameras as they are making money... a lot of it. I get it from their end, keep going as it is selling, but as an end user they really have taken a step down in my opinion.

Maybe it is just me, but this is not the Apple I grew to love under Steve Jobs.

Visual Hub (or equivalent) for El Capitan

I'm a bit confused.

I remember Visual Hub not being further developed as a free application back in the snow Leopard days - then some commercial company took it over but I'm not sure what the status is now.
If I lauch VH in El Capitan I get the message it's a trial version with the option to log in, but no option to actually pay for the software.
And when I search on google I get lots of hits for an alternative to VH but nothing for VH for ElCaptan.

There are a number of Mac apps to convert videos but I now need one that can stich two or three or four video segments together into one video and preferbly also do a conversion at the same time - typically from AVI to MP4 or fromMOV to MP4.

Is there a good applicastion to do the combining of video segmets - either free or for a reasonable fee?

The Education Thread

In the "Deep Thoughts" thread the issue of education and who pays for what etc., etc. came up. it was interesting, a lot of hyperbole and not much fact/data. But it is indeed a very, very important subject. I thought it warranted its own thread to fully discuss the matter without disrupting the "Deep Thoughts" thread needlessly.

So for those who are game, let's have at 'er.

What If?

So the Texas floods and the fires much closer to home have me thinking what will we grab if we are forced to evacuate on short notice.

For the moment we are safe and the 2003 fire should provide a good fire break, but still...

For a start tomorrow I will gas up both vehicles, even though the prices are still set at the Labour Day gouge level. Then make sure we've got enough cash on hand to handle at least 2 weeks.

Absolute must is citizenship papers, IDs and financial stuff.

Photo Albums. HDs from the old MacPro and the MBP.

What else?

Two Apple IDs suddenly a problem?

Don't ask me why (probably due to disorganization back when I was young and irresponsible), but I have two Apple IDs that govern different things.

One is responsible for iCloud and things such as syncing calendars and messages.

The second ID is responsible for Apple purchases of things like iBooks and apps.

This hasn't been a problem in the past, but all of a sudden, my iPhone and iPad are asking me if I want to continue syncing iBooks, and if so, that I must use my iCloud ID for this. The problem is, none of my books are associated with my iCloud ID.

And the idea of consolidating my information into one ID sounds both labourious and maybe impossible. I bet purchases of copyrighted material aren't transferrable.

Any ideas of how to approach this?

Apple Leak Shows How It Decides To Repair Or Replace iPhones

Quote:

A new leaked warranty guide for Apple iPhones shows how the company determines which iPhones are eligible for repair under warranty. Conditions are outlined for in-warranty repair, out-of-warranty repair, and devices categorized as “ineligible” due to damage or unauthorized modification. The 22-page guide is dated March 3, 2017 and was leaked recently to Dropbox, reports Business Insider. Called the “Visual/Mechanical Inspection Guide” (VMI) the document covers the iPhone 6, 6 Plus, 6S, 6S Plus, 7, and 7 Plus.

The types of damage that Apple covers under its warranty service includes debris under display glass or pixel anomaly, a misalignment of the FaceTime camera foam, or a single hairline crack to the front glass without an impact point. The VMI notes that devices with these types of impairments are covered regardless of any accidental or liquid damage.

Any way to "force mount" an external USB device?

I have a Micro SD card used in a Samsung Cell phone.
Yesterday the Samsung phone reported an Error with the card when turning on the phone.

I tried mounting that Micro SD card on the Mac this morning (running El Capitan) but it wouldn't mount.
Tried Disk Uitility - doesn't show up as a disk
Tried Disk Warrier - also doesn't show up as a disk
Tried another Micro SD card, it shows up and works fine.
Is there any application or some way to sort of do a "force mount" if there is such a thing?
The SD card is a small one, only 2GB - may have some pictures on it I would like to recover, but before I can do anything I somehow have to mount it.
