me.com account issues

I have a buddy who has used his me.com email account (setup in Mail) for quite some time and has had these ongoing issues:
pdfs not downloading
pdfs opening at times but not others ("unfixable errors", etc.).
partial previews of jpgs (cut off at bottom in preview window)
some emails come through with no content showing in the preview window.

All these are corrected when dragging the email over into his Sympatico account.

Also, none of these issues show on his iPad.....only on his MacBook (1 year old).

I'm thinking it's a server issue with me.com.

Is there anyone else having such issues with their me.com account? I've never used these Apple accounts, so, I'm not quite sure what's causing the issues.

Vacsinated!

So about 25 years ago we bought a Hoover Regina upright vacuum for my MIL. After the inlaws death it became ours until a couple of weeks ago when a key plastic part suffered a fatal fracture.

Now my wife and I very seldom are in perfect agreement on anything. Mostly sometimes, partial often, complete disagreement you bet. There is one thing we are in total agreement about: We hate shopping for anything that costs over $100.

So we read the reviews. Shark, Hoover and Bissel were all possibilities. Dyson was good but way out of our price range. Then we drove 150Km to the nearest Crappy Tire. Found nothing we liked there. On to Lowes, then to a second Crappy Tire. Found an acceptable Hoover Wind tunnel with almost no bells and whistles at $120. That was $80 less than everything else we had seen so we made the purchase.

Sorry about all the prologue, but here we go. Easy to assemble. Right out of the box it was obvious that this puppy outsucked the Regina by a country mile. Also a lot quieter, wife may find it difficult to interrupt the occasional football game I live stream. Overall I am glad we were unable to track down any bag style vacs.

However, reading the manual (Say What?) it appears there is a lot more routine maintenance. Dumping the dust cup is no better or worse than changing bags on the faded monarch. Ditto for pulling hair off the beater bar. Now however there is also cleaning the HEPA filter and that wind tunnel arrangement. Now the wife will quite happily do all the vacuuming, but guess who does all that extra dirty work. Bet the farm it isn't her.

Anyone here live in Peterborough?

Hello, just doing a quick check. Peterborough, for the last 45 years has been a bellwether ridiing in that how they have voted has mirrored the governing party.

Just wondering if anyone who lives in that riding might tell us the party they are currently leaning towards..... would be interesting to see if the streak continues.

Setting margins in mac mail

We're trying to help out a convert to Apple.

He is running across a problem I noticed the other day. I believe it is on his Macbook and IMac - when composing an email - the lines have a tendency to extend past the viewing portion of the screen.

So he can be typing and looks up to catch the train of thought - but has to arrow over to see what is actually typed.

We were wondering if there was a way to set the margins so that the cursor 'returns' to the left side of the page before the words go off the right side.

I noticed the same thing on my Macthe other day - so it does not seem to be limited to any particular operating system

Thank you

In the Users folder, my primary Home Folder has a red dot with the minus symbol.

I will not go into what I did, or why I did it, but my primary Home Folder is now unattainable, showing a red dot with the minus symbol, on the lower righthand corner of the folder.

I’ve already tried various ways to rectify the situation, without success.

Is there a quick and easy, safe and simple, way to regain access to my primary Home Folder?

What I have noticed so far.

1/ With a Safe Mode start, the Login Window appears to be normal. The primary and other users are shown.

2/ If I select the primary user, the desktop window opens with only the spinning wheel shown. The only way to get out of it, is to do a shutdown with the power button.

3/ In the Users & Groups preference pane, the primary user is shown, but there is no login items option shown, only the Reset Password option.

4/ In the Users Folder, the folder for the primary user has the red dot with the minus symbol.

5/ If I try to replace that particular folder with a Time Machine backup of the most recent folder without the red dot, ‘The operation can’t be completed because an unexpected error occurred. (Error Code - 8003)

6/ Get Info of the of the problematic folder inside the Users folder, Sharing & Permissions: You have unknown access.

Files in Other on hard drive

Recently I got the unexpected message that my hard drive was full. 1.5 GB remaining. This MBP has only a 120GB SSD so I’ve had to be careful and up until a few days ago I had about 1/3 free.
What has changed is the size of Other. See attachment.
How can I find the files and folders that make up Autre to get rid of what I don’t want?
I suspect there is a bunch of doubles. Is there a way to mass delete all the doubles?
Thanks.
David

Some websites "pretend" to load, but browser stays on the old page! Weird!

OK, I have a relatively new issue on my 27" Late 2013 iMac running macOS 10.13.4.

This happens with any browser (Safari, Opera, Firefox)

Some sites, sometimes, "pretend" to load, but do not. If I clicked on the offending link from some other page, the browser shows the progress bar as though it's loading the site, and then stays on the same page from where I clicked the link. The URL bar however shows the new page URL. When I press the "reload" button, it reloads the original page and not the one I clicked.

Say for example I was on google.com, and I typed twitter.com in the URL bar. The progress bar shows as though it's loading twitter.com, "completes" loading, and the URL bar shows "twitter.com" but the page stays on google.com. When I hit Reload, it reloads google.com and the URL too changes to google.com.

If I had started from a blank page and I type the URL into the bar, the behaviour is the same - it pretends to load, but the page stays blank.

One example of such a page where I face this issue is http://ww17.lanefx.com/news/10-reaso...t-mirrors.html. Another example is twitter.com.

I thought it might be a cache issue or cookies issue, so I tried deleting everything; but it did not help. Also, that theory does not really hold water because it happens with every browser; and it is highly unlikely that every browser should have the identical cache issue on exactly the same page.

I tried changing DNSes, that too did not help.

I used twitter as an example because this happens with twitter too.

This is a problem that I do not know how to google for, since I have no way to form a search phrase for this. See how much test it took me to even describe this issue.
I would appreciate any pointers on what else I could try.

Thanks and cheers

Apple Mail problem

In the browser, the address line is for a different email than the one in the preview pane.

The address will say it’s from Expedia but the message will be from a buddy wanting to go out and drink beer. Just had a message from Uber but the actual message is from my cellphone provider.

This has been happening for a couple of weeks with different emails.

Any way of fixing it?

Safari crashes, need advise

Safari on my wife's iMac crashes on startup.

I downloaded a new version of OS 10.13.4 and installed it assuming it contained a new copy of Safari. It still crashes.

All other programs operate as expected.

The following is an excerpt from the message generated. Does this indicate there is a hardware problem or is there something like a preference file that has bad data?

OSX updating issues.

Hello all,

I have a late 2013 27"Imac with Mavrics 10.9.5. Since I have had the Imac I was falsely assuming that it was automatically upgrading the OS. This is particularly embarrassing because Im fairly tech savvy.

In any case I ran the Update to Sierra which it says it has installed. But Im still running 10.9.5.
I have tried most of the fixes that I could find in various forums including re installing Mavrics.
Could someone point me into a solid direction for how I can successfully get this updated.
If I had fewer things on my machine I would just start over but it would take weeks to get this all back to where it is now.
Please help!

For Sale MacBook Pro 6,2 Early 2010

have just returned from the Genius Bar - prognosis: logic board unfixable.

So it now up for grabs for parts. The screen has no dead pixels. It does start up but quits after a while - sometimes 3 hrs; sometimes 30 mins. It has been in a protective cover since day one. Battery life still decent.

Looking for $325.00 to go towards funding a new laptop.

Back-up of a mysql database

I'm the Co-Admin of an 4images mySQL dayabase with just over 9000 pictures on it.

My Co-Admin has been doing the back-ups all these years the database has existed but wants to get out of it.
So I want to do the back ups.

The database is on an external server with HostPapa, the 4images software has a back up function built in but people using that software claim that back-up doesnt work for a large database so I want to back up the database to my Mac.

What is a good and easy to use app do do that - preferably free but that is not mandatory.
I came across SequelPro as an application to do the back-up.
Anyone using that? Or are there other suggestions?

Thanks

I cant wait to hear a liberal supporter say but it is better for the environment all these taxes and carbon taxes..
show me where the taxes have gone - no where, except the pockets of the liberals and their friends.

Its cheaper for me to drive to the US to fill up.. $3/gallon vs $7/gallon here

MagSafe green light blinking

I have a MagSafe charger where the green light is blinking - never had that before in all the years I have owned Macs.I wonder if anyone knows what that means.

I have already gone through all the normal steps, resetting things on the Mac etc.

If I plug in another MagSafe charger everything works fine, so that suggests the Mac and battery are OK.
Don't currently have another MacBook Pro to check the charger on it - will have a second one next Saturday.

But in the meantime - has anyone ever come across this?
Green light is just blinking on and off at a steady rate of about twice a second, no orange.

Closest I can find on the net is this - but no conclusion there:
