So about 25 years ago we bought a Hoover Regina upright vacuum for my MIL. After the inlaws death it became ours until a couple of weeks ago when a key plastic part suffered a fatal fracture.
Now my wife and I very seldom are in perfect agreement on anything. Mostly sometimes, partial often, complete disagreement you bet. There is one thing we are in total agreement about: We hate shopping for anything that costs over $100.
So we read the reviews. Shark, Hoover and Bissel were all possibilities. Dyson was good but way out of our price range. Then we drove 150Km to the nearest Crappy Tire. Found nothing we liked there. On to Lowes, then to a second Crappy Tire. Found an acceptable Hoover Wind tunnel with almost no bells and whistles at $120. That was $80 less than everything else we had seen so we made the purchase.
Sorry about all the prologue, but here we go. Easy to assemble. Right out of the box it was obvious that this puppy outsucked the Regina by a country mile. Also a lot quieter, wife may find it difficult to interrupt the occasional football game I live stream. Overall I am glad we were unable to track down any bag style vacs.
However, reading the manual (Say What?) it appears there is a lot more routine maintenance. Dumping the dust cup is no better or worse than changing bags on the faded monarch. Ditto for pulling hair off the beater bar. Now however there is also cleaning the HEPA filter and that wind tunnel arrangement. Now the wife will quite happily do all the vacuuming, but guess who does all that extra dirty work. Bet the farm it isn't her.
