Leaving ehMac - can't stand captcha every day

I am signing out of ehMac. I do not wish to spare any time or effort any more to keep clicking on captchas every time I wish to enter the site.

It has been a great experience for me these last so many years to have been a part of this community and I shall miss the interaction with so many people whom I have grown to consider friends.

Cheers and bye.

Folder View Options Not Sticking

Sorry for the long winded post, but I want to be very clear about my predicament.

My question refers to this page.
https://support.apple.com/en-ca/guid...hldaafb302/mac

Change view options in the Finder on Mac
You can customize any of the views in the Finder—Icon, List, Column, or Gallery—to suit your preferences. For example, you can change the text size of file names and, in some views, change the size of file icons.

Specifically this option.
Select Icon view options: Change the icon size, grid spacing, text size, and more.

I'm having problems with my preferences not sticking for certain folders.

This is happening on three Macs.

The problem first showed up about a year ago, maybe as recent as last January.

This started with Catalina.

I'm now using the most recent Big Sur.

I've performed general restarts, safe starts, reinstalls, all three variations of Disk utility (The app, recovery, and internet recovery), zapped the PRAM, and reset the SMC, countless times. I've even tried with a new administrator. But with the same problem happening on three Macs, I highly doubt the administrator account was corrupted the same time, on every computer.

I have made at least three postings to Apples' Support Communities since the first of the year, asking for assistance about the problem. The answers were basically not at all helpful, to being extremely vague. They came from the high level members, never from the low level members. It was as if, others weren't having the same problem as I was having, or they simply didn't care if their folder view prefs didn't stick.

I've also preformed countless web searches. I did find a few instances, but they were about ten years old. I don't recall reading anything recent, from others that are having the same problem.

I have left plenty of comments at the bottom of help page, asking for clarification as to what folders, view options aren't meant to stick.

The problem remains, or has happened, on these folders. Or perhaps they are correctly called, finder windows.

Macintosh HD (The folder that shows the folders for the Applications, Library, System, Users)

Applications folder, occasionally.

Folders within the applications folder, it used to be always, but appears to be okay for the time being. Interestingly, folders within these folders always kept my view prefs.

Utilities folder, occasionally.

Library folder, view options never stick. And neither do my viewing prefs stick with any of the folders within.

System folder, view options never stick. And neither do my viewing prefs stick with any of the folders within.

Users folder, view options never stick. And neither do they stick for the other user (Administrator), and the shared folder. My preferred view options remain intact for the folders within the shared folders. The folders within the other user (Administrator) folder also do not stick, but that my be a given.

The view options for the logged in user (Administrator) always stick, as with every other folder within.

So, what I'm asking is, are the problems that I'm having with my folder view preferences not sticking, normal or not?

If they aren't normal, what if any, are the fixes?

This site can’t be reached

I hear this is a frequent issue for people but all I can find is Windows-specific troubleshooting tips.

Basically what's happening is that every few days, seemingly randomly, my laptop stops being able to reach big sites like Google, LinkedIn, and/or Facebook (rarely more than one at a time). I get the error "This site can’t be reached."
  • This happens across multiple browsers
  • The problem is only on my MacBook Pro
  • Rebooting the computer doesn't help
  • Changing networks (I've tried my phone's hotspot) doesn't help
  • And it's usually only one website at a time. I can access the rest of the web just fine.
It spontaneously resolves after a few hours.

Any thoughts on how to fix it?

Console Crash Reports....Crash

In my updated Big Sur, I've been trying to get the crash logs of a particular app but, every time I click on Crash Reports in Console, it crashes. Clicking on all the others is fine. It just crashes when clicking on Crash Reports. I eventually plan on a Clean Install of Big Sur, but for now, I sure would like to figure this out.

Update: Just found this fix and, sure enough, it worked.

Screen Mirroring IPHONE

Hi all,

I am using Reflector 3 as a iphone screen mirroring software. It seem to work well. I am wondering if there is a way to keep my iphone screen mirroring function on all the time so that if I open reflector 3 my phone will simply appear.

I don't want to have to make so many steps to have my iphone on my computer screen.

It's there a way to do this, other software etc.

Any thoughts?

Brian

Why Captcha the last few days?

Am on Firefox on a mac; the last few days I am forced to go through a two-screen captcha before it lets me go to the site/forum.

Why is this happening all of a sudden when all these years I never had to go through this?

Cheers

Big Sur broke Time Machine?

I upgraded yesterday and TM hasn't backed up since. It's stuck on "preparing backup" even after restarts, trashing the "inprogress" file... wondering if there's a fix?

Optical and iPad Air 4?

Is there any way to connect a TOSlink optical cable to a new iPad Air 4? Trying to connect Tidal to my DAC and not have it hardwired to my MBP when I want to play Tidal.

Big Sur - screen sharing

Hi folks,
Just had a client update to Big Sur and now their screen sharing isn't working. Anyone know if this is a known issue? I've been googling already and seeing mixed notes.

Logitech Folio Touch for iPad Air 4

I love this keyboard but the slightest brush against the trackpad keeps activating it. This question is counter intuitive, but rather than returning it can the trackpad be de-activated when I don’t want to use it? Otherwise, I guess I’ll have to keep my hands to the sides when typing. Kind of annoying.

iPhone X, iOS 14.2, complaints from hearers

I'm getting rather annoyed with my iPhone X. Quite often, I get someone on the other end complaining that my voice breaks up and they don't fully understand what I am saying. This happens with any number of bars of reception. Is there a setting gone awry that is affecting my voice quality on the phone? I disabled Noise Cancellation to see if that helps. Anything else I can try?

Old iMac for Granddaughters pictures

We have purchased a new iMac and I was wondering the best way to set up the old one (2009 24" using 10.11.6). Our son and daughter-in-law want the old mac just for photos of our granddaughter. I want to keep the existing OS X and not have to install 10.5.6 which shipped with the mac when new. Can I do this by setting up new Admin account in their name and their password and then deleting the current Admin account? That would give them access to all the installed apps but not give them access to any info already on the computer now, is this correct? Just looking for quick and easy way to get this set up for them to use without causing Grandpa a lot of stress and frustration having to deal with computer stuff. Thanks in advance for any and all ideas.

Say What?????

Been more than a few occasions recently where I question the integrity of the media. This one is non-Covid
https://news.yahoo.com/british-nurse...151147458.html

Quote:

In the courtroom, the nurse learned that she faces eight charges of “murder of a victim under 1 year old,” and each infant victim’s name was read aloud to her. According to BBC News, five baby boys and three girls died. They were named Cemlyn Bennett, Joseph Johnson, Barney Gee, Joseph Gelder, Eli Gelder, Elsie McNall, Daisy Parkin, and Maddie Freed.

Letby did not speak in court other than to confirm her identity and her representatives have not said whether or not she plans to plead guilty. The media has been ordered not to report the names of the alleged victims of attempted murder, but there are reportedly five boys and five girls.

DUST STAINS BEHIND 2019 iMac screen

A month after the warranty ended on my 27inch 2019 iMac in October 2020, dark dust stains started appearing in the lower corners BEHIND the screen, not the surface.

I have two 2012 iMacs running in the same room and they do not exhibit these stains.

Anybody else has this issue ?

Thanks

Trying to update 2015 MacBook Pro. Lots of aggravation.

I inherited a 2015 MacBook Pro and did a clean install. Lots of aggro there as the Internet Recovery took 4-5 attempts before I successfully installed OSX Yosemite.

Now, I'm trying to install AutoCAD and the installer does nothing. I found out it's a problem with the OS so I tried to get Catalina from the App Store. TheApp Store now insists on 2 factor authentication and tells me I need to enter the verification code. I get the verification code on my phone but there is nowhere on Yosemite to enter it. Argh.

Next, I tried to install FreeCAD. System security won't let me install because it's from an unidentified developer. But, when I click "Open Anyway", well, it just won't let me. Double Argh.

So now I'm downloading Sierra. Will the above problems go away with Sierra? Does Sierra have a facility for 2 factor authentication? And does the Security setting actually function properly?

Any comments appreciated.
