Display Too Dark

I'm on a MacBook Pro late 2013 running OS 10.15. For some time now the display has been very dark, making it impossible to watch most movies, etc. Things like YouTube vids are usually okay but movies on Netflix, e.g. are just too dark to watch. I have brightness on full and I've diddled around with the display profile but nothing helps.

I've just compared the same movie scene on my MacBook and on my iPad and the difference is night and day (no pun intended). Is there anything I can...

Hello all. I just wanted to get the intro out of the way before I went poking around.

I am a veteran of the whole forum thing but relatively new to anything Apple or Mac. My kids have had them for years but I just switched a while ago when the Iphone 11 came out. My phone is an 11Pro Max and I just ordered an iPad 11Pro which should arrive sometime in the first week of January.

Looking forward to learning on here - mostly about which apps are the best. I am particularly interested in...

Back-to-back (ups)

Can't recall if it was one of these excellent gentlemen--Patrick, MacDoc, MacFury--who told me a bootable clone.

'Kay, I've finally cleared a disk for the purpose and I have a few questions:

1) CCC or SD!?

2) Does CCC &/or SD! rebuild cumulative backups when you tell it to? I.e., add your new stuff.

3) I have a 1TB Mac. Is 2.5TB enough space on the backup disk. I'm using a 5TB external, half for clone, half for Time Machine.

Does this sound good? TIA!

How Often do you Upgrade your iPhone Model

Curious how often you upgrade your iPhone model? I am currently on a iPhone XS. The only reason I’m using this model is because it is a hand me down from my wife. She got an iPhone XR from work. Previously I had an iPhone 8. Also a hand me down from my wife. 😁. So I guess I’m on an upgrade cycle of every 4 years. I’m the last in my family to fry an upgrade. 72% (Wear_Levelling_Count 172 [threshold 100])

Doesn't mean much to me. Does it mean it's on the way out?

Any other tools you suggest? TIA!

Applecare+ extension past 3 years

Apple has been driving me crazy with extending coverage for clients that bought a machine with Applecare but did not buy AC+ within the specified 60 day period.

Now my decades long understanding was that you could extend the original Apple warranty if you bought the extension within the original 365 day period of purchase. We were doing that for clients and for our own stock for years.

Then sometime in the last 9 months everything went south on doing that for no reason I could discern. (...

Mac Pro freezes

Hi folks,

I'm running a Mac Pro circa 2009. Great machine, no complaints.
running El Capitan

Dual monitor set up, DELL and HP monitors (probably same vintage 2009)
Graphics Card - ATI Radeon HD 5870 1024 MB

Once in a while, as I'm sitting on my desk, sometimes, I knock the desk,
or my knee taps the the underside of the desk. or if I drop something on top of my desk
(its a L shaped desk) my monitors go blank. They still have power but they are in

New Forum Rules

No offense, mods, but these new forum rules really seem to be stifling conversation. It’s the Everything Else, Eh threads that have been keeping this place alive over the years I would say. High Sierra--do I want to update MacOS?

I'm using 10.13.6. I like it--we're friends, mostly, with the occasional bad hair day. Are there any real advantages if I (yikes!) move up to one of the newer MacOS? Pros? Cons?

Con: 1) Definitely don't want no fancy-schmancy upgraded security features, I don't do the two-step & my password is a single character (as am I).

2) All my favourite third-parties would inevitably stop working--some of them are already unsupported by their developers let alone Apple. I'd miss them.

On the other...

Early yesterday afternoon I put in my order for the 14" m1 max - I did some custom config changes to it so I have to wait a bit longer, but I should have it between oct 27-nov 3! Can't wait!!

I've been holding off since the release of the m1 13" mbp - because I wanted the apps I use all the time to be tested with the mac processor, and almost immediately I heard the rumours of the 14" version. So I figured I would wait.

Who else is excited? Did you order?

Restarted with nothing attached to the iMac. No change.

End of the line for this 13" MB Air?

Good afternoon everyone,

I'm hoping that the answer to this question will be obvious to those with in-depth knowledge - is this combination of software/hardware at the end of it's working life?

Is it just me or are electric cars a bad idea; I mean plug in the wall fully electric cars like GM is pursuing...think it's called the volt. This car does have the ability to charge on fuel but cann plug into a 110-volt outlet.

But I can't figure out how to get the scanner to work. It will scan - but only on the photo setting - and insists on putting the scanned item into the 'pictures' file...

Accidental drop of HDD while connected to Macbook Pro

I had an external magnetic hard drive hooked up to my old 2007 MBP with the notebook sitting on my lap in the living room. I was watching TV at the time while transferring some video files to the external HDD. I watched more TV for some more minutes then decided to take a washroom break. I forgot that the external HDD was still connected. As soon I moved the MBP to the side, the USB cable dragged the external HDD along and the enclosure dropped to the carpet. Uh oh. The external HDD...

Mac pro 2008 posing as Power PC G5??

Hi folks it's been a while since I've been on, life you know. I was hoping to get some help if I could.

I just picked up a 2008 mac pro 3,1 - quad core 2.8 intel xeon. I wanted to use it for older games. I also decided to load a few older apps as well. When I installed iWork's 2008, pages says it won't run because the computer is a power PC??
How can it say under 'about this mac' that it's a 2008 intel mac pro but software tell me it's an older power pc? I know the older G5 towers have a...

My DSC-H300 camera is randomly taking bad photos that have large portions of them blocked with a solid colour bar. See attached image.
For every 20 photos I take approximately 4 or 5 will have this problem.
Bought in Canada just over a year ago.
Any ideas if this fixable?
Cheers.

Mail Search Broken

Since updating to Big Sur 11.5.2 (I was on Big Sur before, just an earlier iteration), my Apple Mail's search functionality keeps breaking repeatedly.

Here's the pattern:

I restart my computer and the search works fine. 10 mins later, it spontaneously breaks and won't find any search results for emails I know exist. I restart again and it works again for 10 mins. Rinse and repeat.

How can I figure out what's happening in that 10 mins that causes it to fail?

"The Walking Dead" Thread (untied and roaming free)

I've been a fan since watching my first episode a few weeks back. Riveting, well acted and staged. This season dragged on (my sentiments echoed throughout the net), but that last few minutes of Season 2.0 mid-season's finale made up for it.

Are you a fan? What have you enjoyed about this show? That first season had me on the edge of my seat the whole time and never let go. Been a long time since a show did that to me.

Rare find: Macintosh Classic II with mouse and KB — $25 (Toronto pickup)

Admin—Apologies that I probably don't meet the number of forum posts required to post here. Hopefully you'll look past this? 🙏 🙏 🙏

With a heavy heart, I'm parting ways with this gem Macintosh Classic II. I rescued it from a landfill fate 15 years ago. In unknown condition—body looks good but has naturally aged so not as pristine in colour as it once was—though I understand there are...

Apple Discounts

I was at an Applestore the other day and someone who worked for RBC walked in and got a 15% discount on her purchase. It got me thinking. I know there is an Educational discount that Apple provides, as well as a 25% Employee Discount and a 15% friends and family discount, but what other discounts does Apple provide? I would love to see a breakdown, maybe some people in our community are eligible for discounts that they aren't even aware about!

Best iPhone for pet action/portraits?

I am skipping buying a camera since ‘the best camera is the one you have on you’ and upgrading my iPhone 7 to one that is best for taking photos of my dog - action shots and portraits outdoors, in the forest and in the house. I love having the bokeh so the dog is the obvious subject and also the ability to choose which subject to focus on.

Which iPhone is best for this type of photography?

Alberta, the country.

For decades of my life there has been an undercurrent among Alberta's population for separation. It's like the tide: Depending on who is in Ottawa at the time, the swell comes & goes.

Living through PET's rape of Alberta in the 80's (NEP) made me a lifetime member of the "Albertan before Canada" club and, quite frankly, I have no memory of being a Canadian first. Perhaps as a wide-eyed youth. I honestly can't recall.

I do, however, have memories of the wave of Western separation...

Do-it-yourself garage

Years ago I remember living in London, ON and driving to a big warm garage where you could fix your own car, use a hoist and borrow tools at an hourly rate. On this cold Toronto day I checked to see if I could find something like that here, but the closest place was in Hamilton, and it appeared to be the only one.

Has this concept gone extinct?

My phone is broken!

Is there anywhere I can get my phone repaired???

The home button is not working. I can hear the other caller perfectly well but they can hardly hear me. It also seems to be getting very hot.

This is frustrating to say the least.

I have an 8GB phone, with 1.1.2 firmware, unlocked and using stealth sim (if any of this is relevant).

If there is anyone that can offer any advice I would really appreciate it. Other wise I think I may have a very expensive paper weight!

MagSafe green light blinking

I have a MagSafe charger where the green light is blinking - never had that before in all the years I have owned Macs.I wonder if anyone knows what that means.

I have already gone through all the normal steps, resetting things on the Mac etc.

If I plug in another MagSafe charger everything works fine, so that suggests the Mac and battery are OK.
Don't currently have another MacBook Pro to check the charger on it - will have a second one next Saturday.

But in the meantime - has anyone ever...

Safari gone bad

Safari is my fave browser. Though I have all the others, I like Safari’s features best.

Running Safari 13.1.2 on MacOS 10.13.6.

Typically, I leave all my pages & tabs open for future perusal. But Safari has been often quitting itself overnight.

And in the last week, Safari has been beachballing me. As a scroll through pages, it pauses & spins for a few seconds.

First experience of this &, perhaps needless to say, it’s driving me nuts!

Cleared Safari’s caches, deleted the plist, disabled...

Epson V750 scanner recognized intermittently

I have an Epson V750 scanner that is intermittently not recognized by my Mac Pro. If I temporarily unplug the USB cable or following a power outage, Epson Scan and Image Capture won't see it or be able communicate with it. Sometimes, even the profile for the V700/750 disappears from the System Preference setting for Printers and Scanners.

Strangely enough, if I plug the USB cable into my MacBook and attempt a single scan using Image Capture, then plug the USB cable back into the Mac Pro...

tplinkrepeater.net | tplink extender setup- login - 192.168.0.254

During the configuration of the Smart connect in a Tp-link range extender, a user has to make sure that the SSID name used by both the frequency bands should be different to recognize the band with which you are currently connected. Smart connect feature won’t work if the SSID names of both the Wi-fi bands of your extender will be same. Smart connect is enabled by default and can be configured through the web interface of your tplinkrepeater.net.
