So I woke up this morning to a very scary sight. Upon powering up my late-2011 MBP, I get a flashing earth icon in the middle of the screen. Yup. No valid operating system found.
Fortunately a restart into the Rescue disk (Command-R) got me into Disk Utility, and a repair of the volume brought me back to the desktop. However - it's still giving me an error at the root level of the disk (if you know what I mean).
I did have the presence of mind to create a standalone Mavericks installer USB stick before upgrading my HD, so I think (?) I can boot off of that and run Disk Utility as an external (can't do it even from the Rescue partition since it's the same drive). But I'm taking this as a sign... my system has been ridiculously slow over the past year and maybe a new HD will make things better ;)
So - this arrived in my inbox today. $99 I can probably scrounge together. Worth it?
Toshiba MQ01ABDH Hybrid Drive
Opinions appreciated. I'm liking OWC since last month, when I ordered a replacement battery for my wife's original iPod Touch - it arrived in TWO days from California to my little corner of Mexico...
