How are your emails and phone calls lately? And none being monitored..???

I can't believe the lack of Canadians outcry from a recent Canadian Government change:

"The Harper government has quietly given Canada's electronic eavesdropping agency approval to exchange information with foreign partners even when it may put someone at risk of torture.

Communications Security Establishment Canada is following a federal policy on the risks of ill-treatment when sharing information with other countries, says Ryan Foreman, a spokesman for the spy service. ..."

This should be another mental illness wake up call

Deaths still a mystery, but search for answers points to devastating mental illness - Winnipeg | Globalnews.ca

This a quote of one of the comments that accompany the article:

Quote:

Until one has walked in the shoes of mothers who suffer from post partum psychosis or post partum depression, one cannot harass and belittle this woman. Mental ILLNESS!! Are Diabetics or Epileptics harassed for passing out from low blood sugar or having a seizure while driving and killing others in a crash??? Until one has suffered the deep, dark, suffocating, numbing, harsh, lost darkness and sheer agony of Mental ILLNESS, one has no right to pass judgement.

Below is a reply to the above quote:

Quote:

How can you compare passing out due to low blood pressure to killing your children?

I understand that PPD is a real and horrible thing, but I still believe there is no excuse for these actions.

The death of two beautiful children is not something that should be defended. Period.

As someone who has suffered from mental illness her whole life, I don't condone this mother's actions, but I understand her pain.

Gay Talese - Typography - First Mac

Gay Talese's First Mac: The Godfather of Literary Journalism on His Secret Love of Typography

The writing craft between an Olivetti typewriter, 512 kB of memory, and a pad of yellow legal paper.

Quote:

Great writers seem to hold the physical act of writing with especial reverence — Susan Sontag with her soft spot for felt-tip pens, Mary Gordon with her love of notebooks and writing by hand, Maya Angelou and her blue pencil. That’s precisely why it’s at once disorienting and delightful to find out that Gay Talese — godfather of literary journalism, sage of the writing craft, chronicler of New York’s cats, man of creative discipline — harbors a secret passion for typography. In A Writer’s Life (public library), he recounts the story of how he acquired his first Macs, propelled by the love of typography...

Hack a high-end graphics card into a MacBook Air

Hack a high-end graphics card into a MacBook Air

The Macbook Air is a far cry from a gaming computer, but that didn't stop Tech Inferno forum member kloper from hacking together a system to play high end games on a nice graphics card on an Macbook Air.

The process uses the Macbook Air's Thunderbolt cable to handle the rendering, then runs through a bunch of other cards, and finally the video card. It's a pretty complicated process, but the fact that the whole setup is removable means that your Macbook Air is still just as portable as ever. It can just play games now. Head over to Tech Inferno for kloper's full guide.

Cost to replace an EOS M sensor

Just an FYI, if you damage the sensor in your EOS M it will cost the same as buying a brand new EOS M, kit lens and flash. Cost with taxes and shipping was over $400 cdn!

I had a spec of something on the sensor when I bought an open stock kit the other day, thinking it was a bit of spit or water drop I took the camera out to Canon Mississauga. Oh and btw Canon does not consider the EOS M to be an EOS camera so it actually has to go to their 3rd party repair facility in Whitby. Anyhow after cleaning the sensor they sent an email to tell me that there was some sort of mark left behind on the sensor and that to bring the camera back to 100% it would cost $434.87. I declined the repair and will see just how bad the sensor is. In the mean time I called the shop I bought it from but I could have screwed them because Canon now has the sn so depending on how much of a mark is left on the sensor the camera is probably not salable and I'm not sure if it's returnable. Do have the credit card extended warranty though not sure how that will work.

Anyhow two important things to note, open box stock is not covered under Canon's warranty and that means store demos. I did not know this. And sensor cleanings are also not covered under warranty, which makes sense though Canon come to the paper to clean our Pro gear for free so go figure.

For Sale 2006 15" Macbook Pro

My original Intel Mac. Been sitting in a drawer, unused for about 2 years. Booted it up and used it for a few hours (mostly just surfing the web) and it appears to be fully functional.

Original box, original disks, original AC adapter.

Battery was replaced just before I stopped using it. Replacement was a Chinese copy I bought off eBay. Looks original and holds a good charge.

Display is good. No bad pixels as far as I can see.

Hinges are good. I mostly used this as a desktop computer and did not travel much with it.

- 15 inch display

- Superdrive

- 2gHz processor

- 2GB RAM

- 250 GB hard drive

- OS is 10.4 (Tiger)

- one small dent on top front edge (visible in photo)

- otherwise in great shape cosmetically

Got no idea what this is worth so I'm going to say $250.00 or best offer.

No warrantees or promises. Test it out onsite and if you like it, take it. Pickup in Burlington but could arrange to meet in West Toronto, Oakville or Mississauga near the QEW.

Gmate - For iPod Touch etc Users

I got an email for some reason for their Gmate device. I don't use or need any such device but I can think of some users who might and would like to check it out.

Product

From their email:

gmatesky@163.com

"May I recommend our latest item :

<Skyroam Black Gmate+ Plus Bluetooth SIM adapter for iPod iTouch iPad & Android Apple iPod Touch4 Dual SIM>

Discover Gmate

Gmate is a tiny companion device where users can insert any GSM SIM card to add voice calls, SMS, and Internet access to most Apple iOS and Android devices via bluetooth.

Key Advantages:

a.. Enable an Apple iPod Touch with phone features

b.. iPhone or Android phones can become dual SIM phones

c.. iPad or Android Pads can surf the net anywhere, anytime

d.. Gmate is small and hidden away so you can use it discreetly

For iPod Touch Users

Users of iPod Touch can connect to Gmate, and automatically enable iTouch with all of iPhone's features with the addition of voice calls, sms, and Internet access via Gmate's GPRS/EDGE. An iPod Touch cost much less than an iPhone, and in most cases users will never need to sign a contract with a carrier. Simply insert any GSM SIM card and turn your iPod Touch into an iPhone.

For iPhone or Android Phone Users

Users of iPhone and Android Phones (HTC, Samsung, Motorola, etc) already have a SIM card inside, but all these phones can only accommodate one SIM card. With many users traveling frequently who need to swap with local SIMs or carry an extra phone, users can now enjoy dual SIM features by inserting the 2nd SIM into Gmate, therefore enjoying two numbers on their favorite smart phone, while maintaining only a single phone book, sms, and call logs... It's as simple as that!

Are you interesting in it ? ..."

I have no affiliation with this company and just being a messenger for those that could possibly use their product. And I didn't know such a device even existed.

iPhoto for SL Dilemma

Oish!

I've just finished (finally) updating my gf's Macbook to SL. I realized after it was all set up that it was missing iPhoto. So I thought simple fix, grab her original grey cds and load it up.

Well not so fast... the DVD player is toast. So, how about dragging it over from my system - I mean, she paid for it originally after all. No go. Tried multiple discs with multiple strategies - no go. Tried downloading from the App store, they only have version 9.4.3 which will run as slow as molasses on this Macbook.

This little exercise has taken up the majority of my Saturday. Any one have any advice on where to get a copy of 9.2 or something similar?

Thanks as always,

My fiancée and I share with each other our Home calendar's so we can see if the other is available when one has to make appointments without having to message them first.

This works with no issue.

The problem, the duplicates occur if I send her an invite on an calendar event. If she accepts she now has duplicates. The same also happens vice versa.

I have tried refreshing the calendars but that did nothing.

Speaking of Panasonic, here comes the GX7... wow.

(FT5) First image of the new Panasonic GX7! | 43 Rumors

Looks like it's going to have just about everything on my wish list.

Built-in high-res tilting EVF, tilting screen, in-body stabilization, 1/8000 max shutter, focus peaking, etc. Possibly the same sensor as in the top-of-the-line GH3. Couple of things I don't really care about now but might come to appreciate, like WiFi.

But of course it won't be cheap. 999 euro with VAT probably means $999 + tax initial street price. Time to start salting away some loonies and/or selling off some old gear.

Restore "Places" map in Photo Stream?

Hi everyone,

This summer I've been to England, Germany, Dubai and Bahamas and I found it quite cool that the "Places" button documented this on Photo Stream, I think it's a cool (but I guess not necessary) little function.

Throughout the summer I've had to replace my iPhone twice due to water damage both times. All my photos are still there in Photo Stream but they no longer register on the map.

Is there any way to get them back on that map?

So far I've tried Emailing the pictures to myself and then saving them to my camera roll but that doesn't seem to work - they aren't getting uploaded to photostream.

On another note - is there any way to increase the 1000 photo limit on photo stream? I'm not using iCloud backup so I don't see why I can't store more.

Thanks!

Smart locks... fad or future?

I just saw the spam post about the Kreyos smart watch and it made me think of my purchases... I funded the Agent smart watch, the Scout alarm and more recently, the Goji smart lock.

I'm fascinated by interconnected technology. I have been since this "internet of things" started gaining popularity 7 or 8 years ago. I owned an original Nabaztag among other devices. I think we're at a point in technology now, thanks to the advancements in mobile (with NFC, bluetooth, and the proliferation of connected devices people have on them all the time), that these "things" are now finally ready for primetime.

The Goji in particular seems like a clever implementation. See here if you want all the details: Goji Smart Lock | Indiegogo . But the basic idea is that, using Bluetooth, the door senses when you are approaching. It greets you and unlocks the door for you. No keys, no swiping, nothing. Just walk up to the door and you're good. On top of that, they've created the concept of "temporary keys"; Essentially, if I'm away and want a friend to come water the plants, I can text them a "key" that is only valid for the next 2 hours. They walk up to the door, it takes a picture of them (for my verification) and opens the door for them. If they try and access the house after the 2 hours are up, it denies access and doesn't unlock the door. Combine that with timers (lock the door every night at 10pm) and IFTTT integration (when I arrive, turn on the hallway lights and stereo) and the possibilities are endless.

So, my question is this: Am I just a super geek for backing something like this, or is this the future of smart connected homes? Would you buy a Goji (or similar device)?

New MacBook Pro limited to 8GB RAM ?

OK, trying to post again.

A friend of my wife just bought a new Mac at my wife's suggestion to replace her Windows box that was always giving her trouble.

So she bought a MBPro and she knew that lots of RAM is recommended, but the Apple sales folks insisted that 8GB was the maximum amount of RAM that the new MBPro could use and support.

So why does Apple take such an "official" stand, when others have had no problems when installing up to 16GB of RAM into the same model?

Sure doesn't make much sense to me and is a disservice I would think to the customer.

Does anyone know why?

Car Rental Companies - A Beginner's Guide

When you travel to a destination or if you find yourself without the desire to use public transportation, the best option you have available to you is to rent a car. If you rent car you will be able to travel to wherever it is that you need to go at your very own leisure, without having to worry bout taxi fees and bus service traffic. There are a whole lot of good reasons to consider renting a car, but it can take some time for you to find the best car rental company.

One of the first things to take into consideration after you decide that a car rental is on the agenda is to decide on the make and model of vehicle that you would like to rent. This choice should depend on the specific amount of people and luggage that you need to take with you on your trip. Obviously if you have more than four people you will want to rent a minivan or a six-seater instead of a smaller car. Remember to keep these things in mind when you head out in search of a car to rent and you will save a good deal of time and money.

IF you happen to be on a tight budget yourself then it is about time to start looking for specific car rental companies that happen to be offering better discounts for their services. Solved!-Two NexStar TX 2.5 External Hard Drive Enclosures not working

I bought two NexStar TX 2.5 External Hard Drive Enclosures two months ago and used one in-house only for some occasional backups.

The spare I used about a week ago for my niece's replaced 160GB MB HDD as a backup dive.

All were working fine until...:

- Restarted my niece's MB when she came to pick it up on Sunday, and no sign of the NexStar TX drive anywhere.

- So I said I'd switch her NexStar TX external with mine, plugged it in to check, and it wouldn't mount either and no sign of it. WTF!!

The HDDs all work in another brand enclosure and my HD Dock.

None of the NexStar TX enclosures will mont etc. The drive spins but that's all.

It seems a bit odd that both NexStar TX enclosures would flail and in such a short time, and most reviews are positive.

Did I just get two NexStar TX enclosure duds??

Ok, so I've had really poor experience with Rogers for a long time now. The cable TV signal is flaky and will stutter and pixelate every few days (good weather or bad). The cable Internet will disconnect every few days (usually can be fixed but unplugging and restarting modem; have replaced it at least once) and now the cable is really choppy and pixelated and I have no Internet since Thursday and they can't send a tech till Wednesday.

Ok so is this lousy service or even lack of service a breach of contract? Cause I'd really like to drop them and perhaps move to bell or a smaller independent provider.

Mac Pro 1,1 bad RAM riser tray???

When I got up this morning my MacPro 1,1 had turned off, with the power button unresponsive.

My first response was to remove all peripherals, open the machine and clean it. No go.

I next checked the RAM. I had forgotten that the machine was plugged in, so I pulled the top RAM tray while it was still on. The computer started up immediately without my even pushing the start button and is functioning perfectly.

I swapped RAM riser trays and the "good" tray is recognized in both slots, while the "bad" tray kills the computer, with or without RAM.

A bad RAM riser tray? Did I just get lucky and the RAM riser tray is fried?

Any insight?

Keep those camera settings maxxed for resolution - 4k comes

Thought I'd repost this as it comes up. Leave your camera's at the settings with the highest resolution. Memory is cheap and 4k is coming fast and you'll appreciate the extra quality ....even now at 2k it's noticeable ( both my laptop and 27" are 2k )

Leave the setting high - you can't regain the lost information and you don't know down the road you may end up with one of the new screens ( I'm on a Retina ) with 2880 across pixel count - 4 x the norm.

You get one of the photos up on a 2560 27" and you'll appreciate having the extra info.

Les Paul's Name Cachet

A couple of days ago my wife's sister and husband were visiting us here in Saskatchewan from British Columbia and asked our thirteen year old to pull out his guitar and play for them. He gladly obliged and the first guitar he pulled out was his black Gibson Les Paul Standard. He played for a few minutes and they listened politely along with my 86 year old mother in law. He had fun playing alot of different stuff and at one point he paused for a few seconds and my mother in law stated that he played really well and she was impressed with how good he was getting. She then asked "Does that say Les Paul on the guitar?" looking at the headstock. My son replied "Yes Nan". She then said slowly, "Nice... he was quite a guitar player!" Although it was only a couple of days ago I smile every time I think of it. That Les Paul fella has cross generational name cachet.

Helen Thomas, bane of the Bushes, dies at 92

Helen Thomas dies: Pioneering journalist was an irrepressible White House correspondent

Helen Thomas, a long-time White House correspondent and a pioneer for women in journalism, has died. She was 92.

A friend, Muriel Dobbin, says Thomas died at her apartment in Washington on Saturday morning. Dobbin says Thomas had been ill for a long time, had been in and out of the hospital, and had come home Thursday.

Thomas made her name as a bulldog for United Press International in the great wire-service rivalries of old. She used her seat in the front row of history to grill nine presidents — often to their discomfort and was not shy about sharing her opinions.

She was persistent to the point of badgering; one White House press secretary described her questioning as “torture” — and he was one of her fans.

We need to include "the right to bear arms" in our constitution.....

Or things like this will happen:

Alberta town builds own Gigabit ISP

Small Alberta town gets massive 1,000 Mbps broadband boost

Ultrafast internet speeds that most Canadian city dwellers can only dream of will soon be available to all 8,500 residents in a rural Alberta community for as little as $57 a month, thanks to a project by the town's non-profit economic development foundation.

One gigabit per second is the same speed offered by Google Fiber, as a pilot project, in Kansas City, Mo., and Kansas City, Kans., for $70 a month

gigabit of bandwidth is considerably higher than the high-speed 175 to 250 megabits per second typically offered by fibre internet packages in big cities from internet providers such as Bell, Rogers or Shaw, typically for $115 to $226 per month. And it's blazingly fast compared to the average Canadian internet download speed of just 16.6 megabits per second for an average of about $54 a month

Most rural communities across Canada have to make do with internet service — often delivered by dial-up or satellite — that is slow or expensive, or both.

Not too long ago, Olds was in that boat. Some businesses were even threatening to leave town because of the challenges posed by the sluggish internet.
