Macbook Pro 17"

Hi,

Well. Been an interesting adventure! It all started a year ago after being bored of my 2011 2.2 MBP 15" with the 6750 1GB video card.. I traded with cash (on his end) for a 2010 27" i5 quad. I love the desktop, but realized with 2 kids under the age of two, my personal time is assigned to the couch, so not much desktop usage. Since then, I've gotten a 2009 MBP and sold, a 2010 macbook air 13" and sold (beautiful machine), but I enjoy a good game once in a while. And now just picked up a 2011 (Early) 17" i7 quad MBP with the 6750 1GB video card (same as what I initaly started with!) except now it's a 17"

Yes, 17" is quite amazing.. the best of a desktop, in your lap!

Got it at a great price, with applecare expiring next may! Now to get an SSD, and remove the optical, and up this baby to 16GB ram !

All it needs is a case, a wheelbarrow to lug it around and a new power supply (it's pretty worn.. applecare would cover a replacement?)

Is iPad screen affected by humidity?

This is dry country, but we've had several days of extreme heat and humidity. The last couple of days my iPad seems less responsive.

I've tried several different stylii and fingers, cleaned the surface, restarted. No joy.

Normally, using my homemade stylus, I barely touch a card in solitaire and I get action. The last couple of days, I have to touch several times with no response.

If this keeps up, I'll have to hold my breath until the first ice storm in November when the new ones will drop :D:D:D

Switching from an iMac to a MacBook

So I've managed to land a new job in Vancouver and will be relocating there shortly, because of this, and the fact I'll be moving around a bit in the next year while I get settled there (staying with family while I find a place to rent, and eventually buy a place) the portability factor has just become MUCH more important to me.

So advice on which MacBook to switch to? I'm leaning towards a regular non-retina MBP, but I KNOW there is an update coming soon for these, my bet is sometime between when the back to school promo ends and Mavricks comes out. I can wait a few more weeks to see if it get's updated but I'm going to need to pull the trigger by the end of September.

I've considered a 13" air, but I would NEED an external monitor as I'm coming from a 27" iMac. So I'm thinking I'd be better off with a 15" pro and am wondering if the upgrade to a retina display is worth it. Any opinions?

How do you get rid of Twitter in 10.8???

I have absolutely no use for Twitter and cannot figure out how to make it GO AWAY. It's constantly showing up in the AppStore updates, even when I've deleted every last crumb of it and it's driving me mad. Have Apple so thoroughly integrated this nuisance app with the OS that we can no longer get rid of it??

I've looked for everything related to it using FindAnyFile, I've deleted .plist files for both it and the AppStore and no matter what I do, it's STILL reminding it needs an update, unless of course, I choose to update it and then there it is again in my applications folder.

It's become so annoying that it's now more the principle of the thing rather than the app itself.

iMac as the sole device in home theatre

I am considering using an iMac as the sole device in a home theatre.

I plan to cut-the-cable, so broadcast TV is of no concern. I suppose some sort of USB video device could be added if I want it back.

I expect iTunes to replace my Apple TV. I expect to use the DVD drive (internal or external) to replace my DVD player. I expect to use Safari or Firefox to connect to Netflix as well as websites like CBC.ca and CTV.ca.

Sound would be through my existing surround-sound receiver and speakers.

Control would be with a wireless keyboard & mouse, possibly the Magic Trackpad.

Has anyone else tried this?

On the abuse of the "Ignore" button.

So, I understand fully what the "Ignore" button's purpose is. No problem. If you have so little self-control that you simply can't help but respond to a post (It wasn't my fault, yer honour, they made me do it...), I guess the "Ignore" button is an effective self-censor.

That said, I believe that dropping a smart a$$ comment custom tailored to elicit a response into the middle of a thread that you know is populated almost entirely by people on your ignore list is the ultimate act of chicken shite cowardice and makes you the biggest troll on these boards.

Post it & own it, "Ignore" button off. Grow a spine for once in your life and take the flak you generate. Either that or just don't bother posting there.

My old G4 Powerbook workhorse is suffering video artifacts again. The video chip was replaced two years ago and the same symptoms have returned. That is the only problem so I would like to make it useful to someone without spending an arm and a leg. Maybe a toe or two.

I suspect that the chip itself is fine but needs to be "reballed" which means to have the tiny solder blobs under the surface-mount chip replaced with the higher-temp blobs. Apple or Carbon won't touch this anymore.

Has anyone been able to locate a shop that does this in the Toronto area? The alternative is to replace the logic board. Used logic boards are $50-60 on eBay and $349 from iFixit. You pays your money and you takes your chances.

Sony A3000: the latest game changer?

Sony introduces SLR-esque A3000, a mirrorless camera for $400: Digital Photography Review

The peanut gallery over at DP Review seems about evenly divided on this beast's prospects... I'm leaning toward the game changer side of the fence.

Pros:

- interchangeable lens SLR-style mirrorless camera with a 20 MP Sony sensor -- probably excellent -- for $400 w/ kit lens at launch (matches street price of roughly comparable m43 models and SLRs about a year after release)

- that's about it, but what a massive, massive 'pro'

Cons:

- apart from the sensor it seems both stripped down and dumbed down, apparently to hit that magic $399 - no articulating screen, low spec LCD, few manual controls

- build quality may leave something to be desired

- E mount lens range is both limited and (mostly) pricey... Not a great choice for buyers who might eventually go beyond the kit lens

- confusing Sony product line up could cause problems. This is really a NEX, but it's named like an SLR and looks like one. And then there are two distinct camera types using the A mount (SLRs and SLTs). Is this the beginning of the end for the A mount?

Most of those cons are really only of interest to enthusiasts. I think plenty of consumers who want a better camera than their phone will snap this up, as will NEX users looking for a cheap second body and/or a camera for another family member. And I hope it drives competitors' prices down without being a wrecking ball for the industry.

LOST MacBook Air - Ottawa Airport Saturday

A friend of mine left his MacBook Air charging up in the Departure lounge at Ottawa Airport on Saturday (24 August) (Westjet to Halifax)

He was unable to reach anyone at the airport (Lost & Found no help; Westjet rings to Calgary) - I'm not clear on all the details yet - but suffice it to say, he's been unable to find anyone who may have picked it up / etc.

I'll see if I can get the serial number from his last purchase order and post it - any other suggestions (or to just spread the word), much appreciated.

We thought his laptop was being constantly backed up by his Time Capsule... only to discover today (after an Apple Genius restored the last backup at the Apple Store in Halifax) that it hadn't. Time Capsule had been giving him the "backup failed - not enough space on disk" message for the past few months and he'd been dismissing it without actually reading the damn thing. Last "complete" backup was May. He's lost almost 3 months worth of work (books, chapters, etc. - academic).

"Safety" Glass?

I just finished cleaning up after a shocking explosion of safety glass from my 1 year old Kitchen Aid refrigerator and thought I would share the story as a warning to others.

The piece of glass was about 30” x 15” and 1/8” thick. I had removed it from the fridge to clean with soap and water in the kitchen sink. Yes, I had let it come to room temperature before putting any water on it, and was careful not to scratch or bump it.

Regardless, after rinsing I lifted it by the sides and was about to dry it when it exploded in my hands, military ordinance style, spraying chunks and shards of safety glass as far as 17 feet. It might have gone further, but there was a wall at the 17th foot mark.

I had bare arms and legs at the time and I have so far counted 7 cuts and nicks from flying glass. My clothes were full of glass. Not only did it make a loud bang when it exploded, it flew with surprising force. During clean-up, I found one shard-like piece lodged through the shell of an egg in a slightly open carton of eggs (about a foot from ground zero).

Luckily the resident teen was in residence to rescue me, barefooted and bleeding, from a wide sea of glass. Holy S**t.

I’ve learned my lesson. I’m not exactly sure why it happened, but guess that it was just the fact that I lifted it near each end and not having a third hand, did not support it in the middle. Even though it didn’t seem to be curving, it must have been greatly stressed to explode with that kind of energy.

I may get a piece of plexi-glass to replace the glass bomb instead of replacing it in-kind. If I replace it in-kind, I’ll clean it in place next time....very, very carefully.

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer Stepping Down

Quote:

Steve Ballmer, the CEO of Microsoft and successor to Bill Gates, plans to retire from the software giant within the next 12 months, the company announced today.

The news comes at an interesting inflection point for Microsoft, which has seen its market cap become stagnant even as the company has attempted to radically overhaul its product line. Ballmer has overseen a steady growth of the company during his tenure, relying on consistent streams of revenue from Microsoft's Windows and Office suite of software, yet his success has been largely overshadowed by competitors Apple and Google, which have disrupted Microsoft in mobile and left it looking like an afterthought in the technology space.

Harpo's anti-science has Canadian ADHD/Ritalin researcher seeking crowd funding.

Medications for ADHD: How safe? | Indiegogo

The project looks at long term use of Ritalin and other meds used for ADHD/ADD therapy.

A shame that in the current climate for federal research funding that such a project has to look elsewhere for support........

Quote:

The question “How safe is Ritalin® and other pharmaceutical treatments for ADHD?” has not yet been satisfactorily answered, despite decades of research involving this drug. Some reasons for this are: 1) long-term studies on human subjects rarely last for more than a few weeks because they are difficult and costly to perform, 2) most studies have not explored the enduring effects of the drug once use has stopped, and 3) some studies of both human and animal participants have been seriously flawed. A series of studies conducted in my laboratory has found adverse effects on the ability of rats to remember certain things, as well as an increase in their defensive behaviors in response to a threatening stimulus (an indicator of emotionality). These findings have encouraged us to look for similar effects in human recipients of methylphenidate and other drugs prescribed for ADHD, many of which are also classified as stimulants, but this work is in its early stages. The goal of the project that I propose here is to expand our study of humans for whom stimulant drugs have been prescribed and of those who take these drugs for non-therapeutic purposes.

Quote:

Ritalin® in particular has long been considered to be very safe, and so many parents and physicians have had few qualms about giving it to children, even very young ones. This belief is held despite the fact that very few long-term studies have been done with methylphenidate (because, in part, they are difficult to do). In 1995, a very influential study was published by Nora Volkow, who is currently the director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), and her colleagues demonstrating that methylphenidate is very similar to cocaine in terms of the areas of the brain that the drug effects and the neurophysiological actions that it has there. The primary difference between the two drugs seems to be in their speed of action and the length of time that they linger in the brain. Cocaine is faster and is removed more quickly, which gives this drug a relatively higher abuse potential.

Research on cocaine conducted in the years since Volkow’s original report has established that cocaine has long lasting (and maybe even permanent) effects on the brain that have a negative impact on the user’s cognition: his/her ability to reason, to learn, to remember, and to solve problems. Additionally, it affects the way that the user responds to emotionally arousing situations. Given its similarity to cocaine, I and my colleagues have asked this question: Does methylphenidate also affect the chronic user’s cognition and emotionality adversely? The effects may be more subtle, and, in the case of the individual diagnosed with ADHD, masked by the symptoms that define this syndrome. For example, the drug may make a child’s learning and memory problems worse, but this may be interpreted as just an indication that the ADHD has intensified.

Lenovo "fixes" Windows 8

This is hilarious. PC manufacturers are pretty much stuck with whatever Microsoft decides to foist upon them with Windows, and with Win8, things are pretty ugly indeed. So what does Lenovo do? It "fixes" Win8. It actually listened to customer complaints and did what Microsoft is unwilling to do...

Lenovo: Got a problem with Windows 8? Try this...

In response to the backlash over the Windows 8 UI design, Lenovo is taking matters into its own hands.

All Lenovo Windows 8 machines worldwide will come preloaded with Pokki, an app that not only adds the traditional Windows start button but also includes an interface for launching apps that looks very much like an iPhone or Android home screen. SweetLabs, the San Diego developer that built Pokki, announced the deal in a blog post on its site.

New iMac

I finally went ahead and got a new refurbished 21.5 basic 2012 iMac.

I do not like the little keyboard so it will likely go back into the box, but i do like the mouse.

The picture on the screen looks much better than I thought it would and I find the sound when playing music great.

I do however actually miss having a dvd/cd rom more than I thought I would.

Delivery time was surprising. I ordered Tuesday morning and received it at 2pm Wednesday afternoon ( California to southwestern Ontario in a little over 24hr ).

Since this is my first mac desktop is there any tips on maintenance or set up I should do or avoid?

Email, iCloud and Local Drive

I just got a MacBook Air with a 256GB HD. It's awesome but space is precious and I'm realizing that I don't understand how Mail really works. Or maybe I do and I need confirmation. On my desktop I have 30k emails - many with attachments and I think it's taking up a lot of space somewhere!? I'm worried that if I set up my Mail on my Air it will download all of my email and all the attachments and take up more space than I want it to. Or does it store it in the cloud and the Mail window is more of browser (unless I pull emails into a local folder on my Mac)? Where do you see how much space your email is taking up?

I just want to understand how this is all handled before "I taint the Air". I don't need email on this particular computer but if Mail is handled in a way that won't take up a lot of space then I will sync.

*I just looked in Settings>iCloud on my desktop and learned that Mail is taking up 6.8GB in the cloud. I pay for an extra 20GB so it's not a problem there but I don't want 6.8GB worth of email on my Air*

I would have thought - obviously a phishing attempt except that the email address is

Email Client Suggestions?

I'm going to be working from home starting in the fall, and I would like to keep the work email accounts separate from my personal email accounts. I know Mail.app can handle multiple accounts, but I want to be able to have Mail open to deal with personal stuff without having to see business stuff outside of working hours. Or vice versa, open the work stuff and leave the personal stuff closed.

I know I could set up a second, separate user account on my mac, but that would mean separating everything, and really it's just email that I want to keep separate. I want to be able to 'turn off' the work email at a certain point and not have to think about it.

If there were a quick and easy way to toggle those accounts 'on' and 'off' within Mail.app that would be neat, but I haven't figured that out yet so my next thought was to install an alternative email client to use for the business stuff. Then I could just launch that at 9am and close it at 5pm.

There are two email accounts that I'll have to handle this way, one using IMAP and one is on an office exchange server.

Can anyone suggest an alternative email client that I could try?

Or a better way of toggling those two accounts 'on' and 'off' without disabling my personal email?

Thanks!

The above link shows the next generation. The ones I have look more the the image, except mine are white.

I got them a few years ago because my left arm was injured and sort of hung there like a decoration and I was assured that I would never be able to use it. Then I found a really good physiotherapist.

unable to login my return key doesn't work

Macbook 13". I wiped my keyboard with a damp sponge (...perhaps this caused the problem?). Now I can't login to my Macbook, as I set it to require the password. However when I type in the (easy 5-letter) password, and hit the enter key, I just see an extra dot. :( Since I am the sole user a very strong password was not really needed, FTW...

FWIW, I did use a hair-dryer thinking that maybe some moisture had seeped into the keyboard, and I also placed the macbook in a plastic bag with a bunch of those siccative bags the come with cameras and other electronics.

No success. :(

Is there some way of disabling the password requirement from the install OS/X CD? At least, I would be able to get in and use the trackpad or a mouse.

I've had this Macbook barely over 2 years, and now I am using my trusty (5-year-old) Asus netbook with LINUX to write this message.)

90% of Internet Traffic is Spam - Really ???

At least that's the message we have been gertting from ISPs and sites that monitor internet traffic.

Last night all Google services went off line for a few minutes, the search engine, and all google services, G-Mail etc.

If Google being off line for a few minutes and that causing a 40% drop in internet traffic

Totalausfall bei Google: 40 Prozent weniger Web-Traffic - SPIEGEL ONLINE

how can one relate that to the claim that 90% of the internet traffic is Spam?

If that were true, google going off line should have caused just a tiny blip.

PS: I just noticed that the English summary talks about "pageviews" which in my mind would exclude email and thus spam.

But the original German article talks about "world-wide internet activity"

Totalausfall bei Google: 40 Prozent weniger Web-Traffic - SPIEGEL ONLINE

which of course includes email and thus spam.

I find that more and more - shoddy reporting.

"Kittens are made of rainbows and glitter." Good one, new Mo! Or should I say, Daniella?

I have a problem with the word "name-calling." What's wrong with name-calling? Don't we all wish to be called by our names? If I call you by your name, Daniella, am I not then name-calling?

I think the word we are after is insults. Cry-baby, whiner, victim, curmudgeon, and arsehole are all nouns, fir instance, but not really names, so to use these epithets to describe someone is not really name-calling. If we stay away from insults, on the other hand, we might all get along a little better.

What suggestions do you have, ehMacians, for how we can all play nicely together?

4GB RAM @ 667 MHz

120GB HD

IIRC it was purchased in 2006, my son has had it for the last few years, he's now upgrading his handmedown with another.

The bad news; some slivers of plastic have broken off around left and right edges and parts of the front (although I don't have pics of this, I can easily take some and send them your way). The side of the optical drive has warped plastic downwards partially closing off access to the optical drive so it no longer accepts media, the drive itself is fine last it was used. Sound no longer works, either the onboard speakers or via headphones. I have not tried to stream sound/music via BT to a compatible speaker (I just thought of this now), but that may be a workaround.

The battery was replaced about 3 years ago, the system indicates 167 cycles. Otherwise the machine works fine. I'll be wiping the HD and will install the latest OS I can. Also includes the charging cable and original packaging.

Not allowed links in signatures?

Funny enough, I've been informed by the administrator here that they have removed my signature, removed all posts pertaining to my site and told me that I am not allowed to post any further links to my site on this forum. I didn't realize how bad things had truly become here.

I've asked for further clarification on this issue and also requested that if links to our own sites are to be removed from signatures and that we are not allowed to post links to our own sites on the forums that this be applied globally... I see quite a few other users who have links to their own sites in their signatures ...

Things really are going downhill when the administration feels that a tiny little site with just over 30 members is a threat to them. Talk about paranoid!

Anyone have any comments on this behaviour?

P.S. If you want to know what site I'm talking about them I guess you'll have to PM me as if I actually post a link or the name of it I will probably just get my post(s) deleted ... again.

For Sale 15" Retina MBP and Workstation setup

Hello,

For technical and non-technical reasons I don't want to discuss here, I'm moved my photography computing setup from Mac to PC, which means I have a lot of Mac gear up for sale. I'm willing to sell all as a package, although I'd also sell some parts individually too.

1) 15.4" Retina MBP with 2.3 GHz quad-core i7 CPU and 16GB RAM (Purchased July 2012)

-This was pretty much the basr rMBP when it launched, but with the 16GB RAM upgrade.

-Great condition, no flaws, so scratches, runs great

-Includes TB to Ethernet and TB to FW800 adapters as well as HDMI to DVI

-Includes a protective sleeve (felt-like material, hand made, bought on etsy.com)

-Original box, power supply, power cord included.

-Asking 1600$

2) Docking Workstation setup

-Belkin Thunderbolt Express Dock (provides Audio in/out, FW800, Ethernet, Thunderbolt pass-through for video (also works with mini DisplayPort), 3x USB 3.0. Connects to computer via thunderbolt cable. Just plug in the TB and power to the laptop and all your peripherals are ready to go. 6-foot TB cable included.

-Western Digital Thunderbolt Duo 4TB external Hard drive. Very fast (225-250MB/sec), great for mass storage of photos, video, etc. Has pass-through to daisy-chain with mDP or TB monitor.

-Logitech wireless solar keyboard for Mac. This is the large on with numeric keypad. Has a small USB receiver for wireless connectivity (for some reason, Logitech doesn't make a Bluetooth model with the number pad)

-Apple Magic Mouse

-Apple Magic Trackpad

-Everything in this package pretty much transforms any MacBook with a Thunderbolt port into a fully outfitted desktop workstation.

-Asking 750$ for the workstation setup. I will reduce price by 100$ is purchased with the rMBP.

3) Misc items

-Lexar FW800 Professional UDMA Compact Flash card reader (Fastest CF card reader on the market) - 100$

-Seagate GoFlex Thunderbolt Drive adapter with 256GB SSD in GoFlex caddy. This essentially becomes a Thunderbolt-powered 256GB SSD drive, although any 2.5" GoFlex drive will fit in the caddy. I removed the mechanical drive in the original casing and replaced with a SSD for more speed and shock proofing while travelling. Includes short Thuderbolt cable (I think it's about 2 feet). - 200$

-Will sell both for 250$ if bought at the same time as the rMBP or the docking setup.

And if someone wants the entire setup, I'll let it go for 2400$.

I'd prefer a local deal in Ottawa, but I'm willing to pack and ship everything in Canada . I won't charge for packing materials, but the buyer will be responsible for shipping. If being shipped, we can work out a payment method acceptable for both sides.

PM me if interested, or email ld@artisticphoto.ca (first letter is a lowercase L, not an uppercase I)

Thanks you for looking.

Tagging Ripped TV Shows

So recently I've been ripping a few of my favourite TV shows from the DVD's I own to .m4v to add to iTunes. I want to be able to stream them on my Apple TV. But I've kinda hit a snag. Manually tagging each episode takes a really long time, plus it won't let my type in the full episode synopsis. It cuts off after so many letters. Is their an app that will help me with this? I've heard of iFlicks but I'm unsure if that's what I'm looking for. Suggestions?

3 Beeps when re-starting after a kernel panic means?

So my early 2008 iMac needs a new RAM card I think. One 2GB was replaced under warranty but that has since expired. Should I get another of the same and try installing it myself? Both say "ok" in 'about my mac' but the hardware test does not appear if I hold down the D key when I start it up. I've had 12 kernel panics in the last 3 days, so I guess it won't heal itself. Does any one have a suggestion?

The search function.

Have been trying to use the search function to find an 'older' thread .. all I get, whatever I type in, are blank, white pages as the response.

Is the search function not working?

Broke RMBP screen, how much to fix?

Hey guys,

In a fit of rage because my wifi wasn't working, I sprung up and dropped my 15 inch 2012 Retina MBP on the floor. The screen is broken, although it's not too bad, I'm on it right now. About 1/12th of the screen on the right side is purple, yellow, black, orange and green lines, and then a bar of the same thickness but horizontal grey thin lines is in the middle of the screen. Does anyone have any idea how much Apple will charge to replace this?

The real kicker is that I have dead pixels on my screen that I've had from the get go, so I could have taken it in and asked to have it replaced because of the dead pixels, but my 1 year warranty expired ONE WEEK AGO!! Does Apple give any leeway with situations like that?

I'm assuming not, so basically I just want to know how much this will cost me at Apple. I'm not going to try and do it myself so I'll just take it there.

Okay, gimme the bad news.

Macbook running short on GB

I've got so much music that I want to put it on an external hard drive and take it off my Macbook (c. 2008, 160GB...and yes, I know I need a new system soon;))

The problem is I can't figure out how to configure iTunes to read off my external hard drive. I've gone into Preferences to choose the folder, but only the external hard drive appears, not the folder labelled "Music" which contains all of the music files. What now?

Also, on a somewhat related note, is this external hard drive safe to use on a daily basis and reliable to do so? I have the 1TB model (not the one "for Mac" but I don't think that matters), which is more than enough space that I need:

Carbon Computing Ottawa Closed

Did anyone notice that Carbon Computing in Ottawa closed down? I was in Westboro this weekend and would usually go there to buy iPad/iPhone accessories.

When I walked up the front door and saw that it was vacant, I was shocked. Does anyone know why they closed down? I always tried to support them and would go there over the Apple Store at Rideau/Bayshore.

I always found the staff friendly.

Goodbye to Canada's "national paper" ... or goodbye to NL

The Globe and Mail, which the publishers refer to as "Canada's national newspaper", has announced that it will no longer send printed copies of the G&M to Newfoundland and Labrador. So, they are either going to have to change their motto, or we all have to change our maps to reflect the reality that Canada is no longer considered, at least by the G&M publishers, as part of Canada.

Please keep in mind that before you write us off as no longer being Canada's 10th province, we do produce 13% of Canada's oil, and have vast mineral resources in Labrador, along with hydroelectric power. Just a thought.

Of course, when I was last in Victoria, BC, and bought a copy of the G&M, the shopkeeper remarked "So, I see you like to read Toronto's national newspaper."

Such is Life. Paix, mes amis.

MSExcel questio

Please be gentle. I used to be a programmer, but I've been away from it for several years. I'm not afraid to do the heavy lifting, but I need to be pointed in the right direction.

Is it possible to detect a mouse click in a cell in an Excel worksheet?

I have a list of words in column A. If I click on a cell in column A, I want the word in that column to move or copy to column B.

I've googled but can't find an answer. There are some suggestions of using VBA which I might have to resort to using, but that's a bit much for my current needs.

If this isn't possible, does anyone know of a really lean database app? There used to be lots that were in early development, but the ones I know have all gone commercial and my needs are modest so spending a load of money isn't practical.

Thanks

Mid 2010 Pro

Hello,

Just wondering about buying a 2010 macbook pro, it is for my wife and she doesn't need a new computer because most of her stuff is done on her iMac. Anyway there is a good deal on a 2010 Pro here but I am concerned about the Logic board. Was it corrected by 2010? I had an older pro that was screwed because of the logic board and would hate to waste money on one if it was a ticking time bomb.

Thanks

RIP Eydie Gorme

(CNN) -- Singer Eydie Gorme, who enjoyed decades-long success as half of the duo Steve & Eydie and as a solo artist in her own right, has died. She was 84.

She is best known in the English-speaking world for her 1963 Grammy-nominated "Blame it on the Bossa Nova." In the Spanish-speaking market, Gorme's major hit was 1964's "Amor."

Gorme died Saturday in Las Vegas after a brief illness, her publicist said -- without disclosing what had ailed her.

Her husband Steve Lawrence, her son and other family members were by her side at the time.

"Eydie has been my partner on stage and in life for more than 55 years. I fell in love with her the moment I saw her and even more the first time I heard her sing," Lawrence said.

Singer Eydie Gorme dies at 84 - CNN.com

I always liked her music. I can recall watching she and Steve Lawrence on Steve Allen's "The Tonight Show" when I was a boy.

Here is my favorite song she sang so well. Guess I shall be humming it all day.

Mobile phone drivers 'not linked' to accident figures

Researchers have found no link between the number of US drivers making phone calls while on the road and the number of accidents recorded.

A team at Carnegie Mellon University and the London School of Economics analysed more than eight million incidents of car crashes and all fatalities on roads in eight US states.

They examined data before and after 9pm local time over a three-year period.

BBC News - Mobile phone drivers 'not linked' to accident figures

Dr Pathania told the BBC they were "very surprised" by the results.

"At first we thought the numbers were wrong. We went back and checked everything - but there was nothing going on at all," he said.

"We just know that we saw a big jump in cellphone use and there was no impact on the crash rate."

When Java software and Software Update screws up.

I just wasted two days getting Logitech Harmony Remote Software to work with Mac Snow Leopard OS X 10.6.8 that had worked well in the Spring when I last needed to use it.

I had tried all the various suggestions on the Logitech forum without luck.

So if anyone is trying to run a Java based application that doesn't work or display properly, I can now confirm that the problem is with the Java for Mac OS X Update, which some others have just discovered as well.

So even if 'Software Update' says the Java for Mac OS X has been installed in the Installed Software tab, download the appropriate Java for Mac OS X Update from Apple and install it - Problem solved.

It seems there was a bug in their first June 18 release and was fixed with a later 18 Jun 2013 release that Software Update doesn't always download and/or update properly.

As Apple's later version says: "This update also corrects an issue with Java applications failing to draw or respond to user input."

About Java for Mac OS X v10.6 Update 16

Check Apple's download site for the correct OS X java version if such java apps are not working properly.

But don't ask me how to tell if an application is java based as I don't know.

What a hassle this fix was.
