iMac 24" will not boot

I was attempting a force quit while in mail. Coloured beach ball. Then a number of emails and other windows appeared stacked. Again, stalled coloured beach ball. Could not close anything or force quit anything.

Resorted to turning off using button. (very bad I am assuming) Nothing else responded.

Unit was not running hot. I have upgraded to Mavericks.

I let it sit for about 20 minutes and tried restarting (button) . Grey apple logo, empty grey oblong and grey beach ball. After approximately 5 minutes it all "clicked " off to a black screen as if in sleep mode. Six - eight attempts.

This is a refurbished unit purchased November 2009 . My Apple care has expired.

I do not have a book for this unit and do not have a clue for my next step to try, if there are any. My nearest Apple Store with genius bar is in London, Ontario.

We have two storm systems on the way so I will need to wait until next week or later before heading there. Living in the path of the storms this winter.

The one bright light is that I have an external hard drive on this unit.

Appreciate any and all suggestions from members who are way way above my pay grade.
