Shipping more than a parcel but less than a whole house

Hello, my brother moved from Ontario to BC several years ago and now I would like to ship him his stuff. His stuff would fit on 4-6 skids/pallets.

I'm playing around with idea of driving it out, putting it in a moving truck or something else.

What is the most economical and/or easiest way to get that stuff out of the basement?

antenna strength?

Hello, We live in a rural area which has 2 cell towers within a few miles. One is Rogers, the

other Telus. Couldn't get any reception while on contract with Telus, so switched to Rogers.

Can send and receive text (most of the time) at home.

My iPhone 3GS will ring in the house, but can't answer. Friends have iPhone 4S, on Bell, they seem to be able to get reception here.

Time for new phones- which has best phone reception in dicey areas, tall trees, etc

iPhone 4S, 5C or 5S? Would even consider android if we could use it here……

Wifi works fine, mostly use the iMac desktop in the house, but would be nice to be able

to call and receive phone calls at home.

MacPro Daisy-Chaining

This is What 42 Peripherals Daisy Chained to a 2013 Mac Pro Looks Like

Macworld connected 36 drives (19 Thunderbolt, 15 USB, 2 FireWire 800) with a combined capacity of 100.63TB. They also connected two Thunderbolt docks (the Belkin Thunderbolt Express Dock and the CalDigit Thunderbolt Station), an Apple Thunderbolt Display, two Apple Cinema Displays, and one HP Z Display Z27. WHEW!

A dozen of the drives were powered directly via the cables connecting them to the Mac Pro, the remaining 24 required external power. The combined power draw when running a script that copied data from the Pro’s internal flash storage to the external drives was 865 Watts.

The Mac OS X Activity Monitor showed that there was a combined throughput of 3 Gbps. The rate slowed as the fastest drives, (OWC’s Mercury Helios), finished transferring data.

Anyone tried 'smoothmouse'?

On and off I'm having trouble with the mouse and the trackpad on the Mac.

The mouse on the Mini and the trackpad on a MacbookPro - both running 10.6.8

Mouse/trackpad movement is jerky and delayed - next day everything is fine and a few days later the same issue which makes using the Mac real frustrating.

Seems to be a fairly common problem to at least Mountain Lion based on wha I read on the net.

I just installed smoothmouse on the Mini and is does seem to make a difference.

Wondered if anyone had experience with that software or have other possible solutions.

BTW - I tried a mouse on the MacBookPro - same issue, so it's not the trackpad itself.

Mega Wireless Router

This Monstrous Linksys WRT1900AC Router Is For Folks With A Real Appetite For Networking

There are wireless routers, and then there are wireless routers with a 1.2GHz dual-core Marvel Armada SoC processor and 256MB RAM that supports USB 3.0 drive transfer speeds and has four massive antennae that can blow wireless connectivity through almost any environment. The $250 Linksys WRT1900AC (which you can win here) is the latter.

This router is not for the faint of wallet. At $250 it’s considerably more expensive than your average wireless device. However, given the power under the hood, range, and speed boosts along with shaping and traffic management features, it’s well worth the investment. As we all well know most Wi-Fi routers are created equal. This one is specifically designed not to be.

The router is also interesting in that it supports open source firmware out of the box, including the popular Tomato and OpenWRT systems.

Hit wrong key, Numbers column hidden

Wow I dont know how I did this. I am doing my taxes and I have two columns, A and B. All the numbers are in B. Somehow I hit something which removed the B column and I go from A to C.

How do I get the B column to be seen again? I did save my work as I went along, and did print it out and the numbers in B are there, so all is not lost. Is there a Show All Columns thing I can hit? Where is it?

Worst case scenario is I type them into Column C, but I'd like to undo whatever I did and also to understand where I went wrong.

Thanks for any help,

Firefox 29 is here

Mozilla officially releases FF29 today. There is a drastic change in the UI. "Tab at bottom" is no longer available. Mozilla enforces "tab on top", and there is no way so far to move tabs to below the Toolbar like that in FF28 and before; not even through "about:config" to customize the tab location.

I don't like "tab on top". My option is to install FF24.5.0ESR. "ESR" is Extended Support Release. This version does not have the latest features, but has the latest security updates.

Day Trip to USA

I took my family to the states yesterday - haven't been for a while..

wow, amazing how the cost of life is so so much more cheaper in the US than in Canada..

Cost of fuel was $3.30 per gallon, [ that works out to 80 cents per litre ]

then at McDs.. we had family happy meal which consisted of 2 Big Macs, 4 drinks, 4 fires, 2 Cheese burgers, 10 Chicken Nuggets for $13..

how depressing :-( everything is cheaper there not to mention.. they were giving it to us at PAR!!!.. then I received my change in USD.. I felt like going home and coming back with a suitcase of cash and exchanging it.. [ play the currency game LOL ]

Case of 30 beers was $20.50 at Target  - cheaper than water.

The next time I hear an American complain out cost of life I will tell them to shut up and come to Canada for a week to teach them a lesson..

Safe method of payment for selling car?

This question may seem very naive, but having never bought or sold a car privately, I am wondering what payment methods to accept from the prospective buyer of my car.

The largest private transaction I have had was selling my motorcycles, but then the amount was still small enough to warrant cash. The car is a higher amount, hence my question.

I suppose a cashier's cheque or banker's cheque might be good. Is there any way they can be faked?

I don't want to sign away the car and deposit the cheque to find out that it is not a genuine one.

Am I just being unreasonably paranoid?

iPhone 5 Sleep/Wake Button Replacement Program

Quote:

Apple has determined that the sleep/wake button mechanism on a small percentage of iPhone 5 models may stop working or work intermittently. iPhone 5 models manufactured through March 2013 may be affected by this issue.

Apple will replace the sleep/wake button mechanism, free of charge, on iPhone 5 models that exhibit this issue and have a qualifying serial number.

http://ift.tt/1jNqifJ

According to the serial number, my iPhone 5 qualifies for this program. I've never experienced any problem the button and I'm debating whether to do it or not. The web pages says to backup and then "Erase data and settings in Settings > General > Reset > Erase all Content and Settings". Is this just for privacy purposes or does it mean that I may get a different device back? My phone has been well cared for: never dropped and minimal wear on the screen. I'd hate to get a refurbished phone in questionable condition!

Lost iPhone- help needed

Went through Chicago TSA security early this morning enroute to Toronto to Halifax to home (Goose Bay). Before sending everything through on the belt, I put my iPhone into my jacket pocket, zipped it up and put it in a tray. It took awhile for it all to come through. Got to my gate nd had 10 minutes to board Felt my pocket formy iPhone and it was no where to be found. My take is that someone at TSA tookit. Logged on to Find My iPhone and see that it's offline. I clicked the Notify button. Not a happy camper. Wish they took my wallet instead actually. My questions- I have almost 2 hours here in Toronto and 4 hours in Halifax. I was given the TSA number to contact. I also see the option to erase my iPhone on the Find My iphone app but I've got some important family vids and pics I don't want to lose if the phone is returned. It's passcode protected. I have all my sensitive data on 1Password which is also password protected. Should I erase it now or wait? I sure would like that iPhone back.

Xerox Phaser 6500 DN n 10.4.11 on a PPC

I everyone, trying to find the answers online but feel like getting the run around with things - aka can't find the answer.

My dad has my old Dual 2.3 GHz PowerPC G5 which is running Tiger (10.4.11) he got a Xerox Phaser 6500 DN last month and it was working just fine on this computer up until his comp had a crash a few weeks ago, and since then its stopped working. I've resintalled the drivers and its not helped, rebooted the comp, tried several different cords/cables I've been to the xerox site and gotten the older drivers from there and still nothing is working.

My dad is getting a little ticked as good money was paid for the lazer to start with, it works just fine on any of my comps (MacPro and Macbook Pro running Mavrick) and my mates windows comps (Alienware laptop n Cyberpower PC - running Windows 8), we have no issues with the printer its just my dad who can't get it to work anymore on this comp.

Any ideas and or suggestions as to what I might be able to do to get it working again, short of reinstalling everything from scratch on the comp and hoping it will work (I'm not sure I can upgrade the comp to a higher OS, not looked into that as yet since it is a PowerPC don't think anything higher then Tiger will run on it, though maybe leopard or snow might not sure or even if that would help matters since the programs on it will not run on snow or leopard - such as photoshop 6 [NOT CS6]).

Thanks and take care everyone!

Mac OS X Betas: Not just for developers anymore!

Apple has today opened up the OS X Beta Seed Program, which allows you to test pre-release versions of the Mac operating system.

Until now you needed a $99 per year developer account to access beta versions of OS X. As noted by TechCrunch, you can now do so for free. However, you’ll still need to accept a confidentiality agreement, so you should think twice before leaking any new features to the world.

Apple to End Support for AIM iChat Logins on Older Versions of OS X Starting June 30

Apple to End Support for AIM iChat Logins on Older Versions of OS X Starting June 30 - Mac Rumors

Quote:

Apple has announced in a recent support note (via ZDNet) that it will end AIM iChat login support for users running versions of OS X below 10.7.2 Lion on June 30, 2014.

The change will affect those who use their mac.com and me.com addresses as AIM IDs to log into iChat on older systems, as users running compatible versions of OS X Snow Leopard and OS X Lion can upgrade to OS X Mavericks for free.

Meanwhile, users running OS X Leopard are directed to purchase and upgrade to Snow Leopard and then install OS X Mavericks for free. If a user cannot upgrade to a newer version of OS X, then the creation of a new AIM ID on AOL's website will be required along with the need to repopulate a new contacts list.

iChat was discontinued in favor of Messages, which has been the default instant messaging application on the Mac since its first appearance in OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion. According to the latest data from Net Applications, Apple’s newest operating system, OS X Mavericks, holds a 51% share on all Macs, while the share of systems running older versions of OS X affected by this latest change is 19%.

Inequality: "You ain't seen nothin' yet"

What the 1% Don't Want You to Know

A new book that’s the talk of academia and the media, Capital in the Twenty-First Century by Thomas Piketty, a 42-year-old who teaches at the Paris School of Economics, shows that two-thirds of America’s increase in income inequality over the past four decades is the result of steep raises given to the country’s highest earners.

This week, Bill talks with Nobel Prize-winning economist and New York Times columnist Paul Krugman, about Piketty’s “magnificent” new book.

“What Piketty’s really done now is he said, ‘Even those of you who talk about the 1 percent, you don’t really get what’s going on.’ He’s telling us that we are on the road not just to a highly unequal society, but to a society of an oligarchy. A society of inherited wealth.”

Krugman adds: “We’re seeing inequalities that will be transferred across generations. We are becoming very much the kind of society we imagined we’re nothing like.”

Wireless connection issues

I recently upgraded my iMac time 10.8.5 and been having connection issues regularly since. The machine loses it's connection with 2wire bell modem. Airport is working, I'm well connected to the network but not to the modem. I occasionally get messages saying my IP address is in use by another machine but not every time I lose my internet. It seems that 90% of the drops are when the computer goes to sleep but some times the connection is lost when it's in use.

I have reset the DHCP on the router which didn't help. I have tried DHCP, DHCP with a manual address and fully manual TCP/IP settings. If I bounce between settings I connect at some point. It's only this computer that has an unstable connection. We have macs, pc's, wireless printers, phones, iPads etc on the network and all function properly.

I read in another thread than moving from 192.168.2 has helped with some connection issues. I'm wondering if this would solve my issues?

Not very technical so fire away with any questions my description raises.

iMac box..

Hi Guys,

I'm wondering if anyone had an intact iMac box they would be willing to give up, or sell for a nominal amount?

I have an iMac 11,1 (27" Late 2009) model, and I'll be relocating to New York very shortly for a new job. :) I'm starting to pack up all the essential gear, and no longer have a box for this iMac. Anyone in the GTA who has one that they are willing to part with, and I'd be more than happy to drive over and pick it up. It would make moving this beast much easier for me.

Thanks!

Custom number formatting in Numbers

Hi,

Numbers by default puts commas at every thousandth place (1,000,000 for example). This is the standard way of representing numbers in many parts of the world.

However, I need a custom format for the comms separators. I need the first comma at the thousandth place, but every subsequent comma at the hundredth place. The reason for this is, this is how numbers are expressed in India.

Examples:

1 Million in Canada (1,000,000) would be represented in India as 10 Lakhs (10,00,000)

10 Million in Canada (10,000,000) would be represented in India as 1 Crore (1,00,00,000)

100 Million Canada (100,000,000) would be in India 10 Crores (10,00,00,000).

So, I need to do this in Numbers, so need to create a custom format and would love some help.

Thanks and cheers

What's the best affordable option to replace the glass on my iphone 5? Was thinking of either going to the Apple Store and doing a screen replace, trying out iRepair in Toronto or ordering this to my house in the US and doing it myself.

Cell phone transmission - in 25 words or less

I seem to be the go-to person for any telco related questions. Usually I can fabricate an answer that satisfies the inquirer and doesn't make me look stupid. But this basic question has me befuddled.

My cell phone is registered with carrier XXX, so when I dial a number, it seeks a tower that's on the XXX network. Then the tower feeds the call to switching equipment and locates the called number on a landline switch or a cell switch and once all the switching is done, the call goes through. (I'm a retired computer programmer, so I think I understand how the switches work)

Here's where it gets murky. A guy asked me how a cell call gets from here to say Toronto. He believes it goes by satellite. Does it? It's been a while since I even thought about it. I still remember when microwave towers were a "new" thing and there was a transatlantic cable.

Apple ID Conflict

My wife has her own iTunes account but there are several apps that still ask for my password for my account so she can't update them.

I delete them from her iPad and re-download them with her account but as soon as they have new updates she's prompted for my password again even though she is signed into her own account. It's driving her crazy because no matter how many times I delete them and try to install them with her account as soon as an update is available it gives us the same problem again.

Any help and suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Search and Destroy (at least export) new iWork files

Hello ehmac peeps,

I need help. Like so many of you, I blindly upgraded to the new iWork in October 2013 - trusting apple to deliver us a decent product. Since then, I have tried to become as efficient with the new iWork as I was with the old, but now it is almost May, and I find it as cumbersome as before. My workflow has never been so sluggish. I miss my toolbar and inspector.

I am a teacher, and as a result, create and tweak many files on a daily basis. I am now at the point where I would like to revert back to iWork '09 to reacquaint myself with my awesome workflow which saw me creating units, lessons and assessments in 1/3 the time it is taking me with the new iWork.

I have files I have created with iWork '09 which I have not opened yet, though I fear about half I have. They are stored on my Dropbox and are frankly too numerous to all fit on iCloud. Luckily, I have not purchased a new mac yet, and I have copies of the old iWork application files on my HDD somewhere (at least apple didn't delete those).

Is there a way to use Finder to search for all the files created with the new iWork so that I may painstakingly export them to the old iWork versions? Also, is there a program that will convert a batch list of files (pages, numbers and keynote) for me?

Thank you very much ladies and gentlemen of ehmac.

confused with Safari and iCloud

Been using Firefox on my Mac . Used Xmarks (Foxmarks) to upload bookmarks and used Xmarks for Safari on my Mac to update Safari bookmarks. I have iCLoud for Safari enabled on Mac and IOS devices. As of yet, I have not seen Safari on my iPad or iPhone get the bookmarks updated. I don't remember them updating for quite a few months now. How can I force an update? I disabled iCloud for Safari on my iPhone and thus deleted all the bookmarks and then re-enabled, but the old bookmarks are back. How can I get this to work?

looking for mail app with spam filter

As the title says, I am looking for a mail app for my iPhone/iPad that has a spam filter. I am tired of the junk getting through. OS X mail has no problem sorting this, but the iPhones lack of filters is annoying.

Unfortunately the email address I am using does not have a spam filter, so I can't log into my webmail and adjust things there, this is the reason I need and want a filter on my iPhone/iPad.

I have looked at a few when googling but I do not see anything regarding filtering. Free or paid, it does not really matter to me at this point.

Portland plans reservoir flush after teen urinates in water - seattlepi.com

Quote:

PORTLAND, Ore. – A giant water reservoir is offline for the time being after a 19-year-old man was caught urinating in it, police said.

Police said the man was caught on film early Wednesday morning at Mt. Tabor Reservoir Number 5 in Southeast Portland.

About 38 million gallons of drinking water are being discarded because of the incident.

The entire 50-million gallon reservoir is being tested for possible contamination.

Though there's not much risk to the public, the water bureau said it won't serve tainted water to customers. For the time being, water will come from the Bull Run watershed.

Outside of the fact that the contamination level would be about 1 part per 500,000,000, don't the idiots in charge realize that wildlife does this on a routine basis. I wonder what the level of fish feces is in that reservoir?

As a matter of fact one of the main purposes of water treatment is to remove or neutralize such contaminates.

Clearly the idiot who made that decision has dreams of being a Congressman.

EDIT: Further investigation shows this is one of 6 open but fenced off reservoirs in the Portland area that contain what is referred to as finished drinking water. Still minimal contamination and I am certain that some wildlife does get thorough those fences. At some point Chlorine would be added which would certainly take care of this.

Surprised (not) that the original reporter failed to mention that the reservoir contained treated water,

Anti-"socialist" public policy in action. Idiots.

Tennessee Passes Mind-Boggling Ban on Bus Rapid Transit

Quote:

Tennessee lawmakers overwhelmingly voted in favor a bill that bans the construction of bus rapid transit (BRT) anywhere in the state.

The impetus for the vote was a proposal to build a $174 million BRT system in Nashville called The Amp, which would’ve ran on a 7.1 mile route and served rapidly growing neighborhoods across the city.

Quote:

Although BRT has been shown to revitalize economies and reduce congestion, opponents of The Amp voiced concerns about the safety of unloading bus passengers along roadways and whether private land would be used to build dedicated bus lanes.

After the vote, Amp opponents revealed that the conservative group Americans for Prosperity, founded with the support of brothers Charles and David Koch, had lobbied in favor of the bus ban.

The legislation is startlingly specific: Senate Bill 2243 forbids “constructing, maintaining or operating any bus rapid transit system.”

Quote:

Now, drivers in Nashville can look forward to increased traffic and longer commutes. But at least those pesky buses won’t be in the way.

For Sale FS 64GB iPhone 4S White Rogers

64GB iPhone 4S in white for sale. Locked to Rogers, phone is in 7/10 condition, some very minor scratching from day to day use but nothing out of the ordinary for a 4S. As the second owner I've had the phone for almost 2 years. Sorry no Applecare left. Everything functions as it should. Includes original box, brick and charging cable, sorry no headphones. Pics available.

How about $250. I'm in the Brantford area and a local-ish meet up is preferred.

If there is any interest, I can also transfer over my month to month plan with Rogers (not a contract, although you can upgrade the phone if you'd like to sign up for a new contract and keep the plan). I would normally upgrade myself but we will be travelling for a few years so the account is being cancelled if there are no takers in the next 30 days. I believe this is better than what's being offered at the moment for iPhone plans (if I'm wrong, please let me know and I'll remove this part of the ad). If interested, we meet up and the entire process can be done in a few minutes over the phone with Rogers.

The plan is $60+tax ($67.80) and includes:

- 500MB Wireless Internet

- Unlimited Canada-wide Minutes

- Unlimited Sent & Received Messages Text, Picture & Video

- Call Display & Voicemail

- 2500 Call Forwarding Mins

- Conference Calling

PLEASE HELP - 21" vs 27" what memory/storage for my uses??

Thanks for looking!

I will try to keep this short. I am upgrading my 2008 iMac (2.6ghz 4GB 750GBHD).

I have 4 external hard drives plugged into my mac:

1) 2.2TB iMovie files

2) 800GB iPhoto Library

3) 750GB Time Machine

4) 500GB iTunes Library

________________________________________

Purchase Options:

1) 27" 3.5GHz i7 1TB Flash

2) 27" 3.5GHz i7 3TB Fusion

3) 21.5" 3.1GHz i7 1TB Fusion

I just bought a new home and I will setting up whole home automation and every tv will have apple tv so I would like to stream my movies from my hard drive in high definition. I use my computer for home movie and photo editing. Nothing crazy.

My original thought was to go with option 1 and purchase an 8TB RAID Thunderbolt external hard drive to store all my files in one spot and get rid of the 4 separate hard drives I currently have. I would use another HD for Time Machine (I know you can configure a RAID drive to do so but I want to keep this simple)

My last computer lasted 6 years so I'm not afraid to invest in a system that is perfect for my situation.

I really don't know anything about RAID storage other then it's fast with thunderbolt connection.

One last thing... I will NEVER watch any movies on the actual Mac so don't let that influence your recommendations.

Any suggestion is greatly appreciated and thank you all very much for the any advice you can give.

iMessage and messages

My daughter recently switched from an iPhone to a Samsung whatever. I am able to receive her (non-iMessage) texts on my iPhone, but when I reply they get sent from my iPhone as iMessage texts and she does not receive them. Her other iPhone friends are able to have full normal non-iMessage exchanges, but not me!

If I turn off iMessages I can communicate with her in "text" mode, but I don't want to have to do that every time I wish to send her a text.

In the past I have communicated successfully with others in non-iMessage mode both send and recieve. Nothing has changed on my phone.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks,

Thom

Odd one for you. I traditionally run with OpenDNS servers, since my ISP (Megacable Mexico) sucks the big one.

Today for some reason I cannot access

nor

Welcome to Co-op - Bienvenue à Coop

Both are confirmed as working via (Down For Everyone Or Just Me -> Check if your website is down or up?) and by the folks at Co-op.

I switched my DNS over to Google's - Applied - no change.

Removed all custom DNS and went with my ISP's defaults (provided by server) - Applied - no change.

Also tried Chrome instead of Safari - no change.

Suggestions? I'll try a restart in a little while, but at the moment I have a bunch of tabs open that I need to deal with...

A month with an iPad Mini - thoughts? Help?

I recently cross-graded from a BlackBerry Playbook to an Applie iPad Mini (non-Retina). Barring the obvious learning curve, I'd like to ask the community for recommendations/help on some of the issues/challenges I am having; I'm hoping that they are all on my end. :)

Observations/Challenges

  • Inconsistent UI relative to the PB -- e.g. to get to the home screen you push the button, but the button can move depending on orientation. This is a far cry from the PB's consistent "swipe up from the bottom" approach -- the bottom is always, er, "the bottom".

  • Many applications reset to the "home state"

    • Dropbox often resets to the root directory when I double-tap the home button to navigate between applications. This means that if I am deep in the file system, I have to click 5+ times to get back to where I left off. For example, if I am in Dropbox and go to Documents -> School -> Course -> Assignments -> Assignment1 and then open a PDF from there (via clicking the "Open In" up arrow thingie, when I navigate back to Dropbox (double-push the home button, swipe to get to the open dropbox app), Dropbox goes back to the root folder.

    • Swiping out of Acrobat Reader and back in, sometimes it goes back to the file selector, losing the place I left off

  • What is up with the Calendar app? If I have two overlapping appointments in the same calendar, they are literally overlapping vs. showing side-by-side (if they were in different calendars). I don't recall seeing this in OS 10.5.x, and definitely not in the world of Blackberry; I can't imagine this is "productive"

  • Magazines (e.g. bookshelf); is there any way to have more than one magazine open at once?

  • Waking up or navigating between open apps often has the incorrect "preview". E.g if I have 5 apps open and double-tap to switch to one, the image shown for the open apps may not be the same as what is actually there; i.e. when I actually click into the app, the screen instantly changes to the real "live" screen. Not sure how else to describe this.

The availability of applications is great, but so far the Dropbox issue, and most apps resetting to their "home state" when I re-enter them is severely impacting productivity.

Suggestions?

iTunes Match Syncing and Playing

Hi there,

I have iTunes Match, and my iMac is my computer from which I synced initially to the cloud. My AppleTV and MacBook Pro both play a very limited list of my songs, not limited to just purchased songs.

When I signed in and out of iTunes Match on my AppleTV, it seems to see songs, but skips them during shuffle.

For my MacBook Pro, I have authorized the computer and updated iTunes Match, but it simply shows a very limited list of songs, with playlists not reflective of the full catalogue of music I have in iTunes Match and on my iMac.

I know this doesn't have enough info to outright solve, I believe, but I hope it's a start.

Macintosh LC520 Cdrom issue

Got my LC520 out of storage a while ago, and was running 7.5.3 sys software on it. Sadly, before I got a chance to back up anything the HDD died :(

I purchased a replacement HDD and got everything reinstalled and the OS back to 7.5.3, but now some of the games that I used to play aren't running as well as they used to.

For example, I used to play The 7th Guest perfectly fine on the old HDD, but now I get an error message when starting the game that "Your CDROM drive is too slow, and performance may be poor during gameplay". Nothing has changed with the CDROM. It has a 300K transfer rate (2X), which is in the recommended specs for this game. I never got this error before I had to reinstall everything...so I have no idea whats going on.

Is there some extension or something that I may be missing? I updated the CD software to 5.3.2 thinking that would help, but no go.

Heartbleed security hole in SSL

On a scale of 1 to 10, security experts are calling this one an 11. (I'm surprised nobody here has posted anything about it)

Alarming Web security flaw has exposed millions of passwords, credit-card numbers to theft risk | Toronto Star

You can check to see if sites you commonly use (banking etc.) that have secure logins where you see "https://" in the URL, are still unpatched:

Heartbleed OpenSSL extension testing tool, CVE-2014-0160

So far I've checked TDCanada Trust (ok), Ufile (ok) and Gmail (mixed results which I'm not sure how to interpret)

If the site in question is ok, you may want to change your password on that site in case it was recently patched. It's always possible that your login info was grabbed before the vulnerability was discovered. It's also possible that the site was never vulnerable in the first place, but unless the institution/business/entity in question issues a statement to that effect, I'd err on the safe side and change your password.

Right now, the CRA site is partially shut down while they patch things. It means we can't upload our tax returns right now - I'm sure a lot of accountants across the country aren't very happy today. I am working on one return I thought I'd file today - I did a bunch yesterday for family members. Guess I'll have to wait and see.

It's hard to know with stuff like this whether anything much was done with this vulnerability - one has to suspect not or there would have been many more apparent thefts of passwords etc. Still...a bit disquieting, to say the least.

A McLaren and Sir Patrick

First Drive: 2015 McLaren 650S

As I settled in and sipped my cappuccino in silence, I glanced around the patio. As I surveyed the place and the other patrons, I suddenly did a double take.

Sitting at the adjacent table was Sir Patrick Stewart, captain of the Enterprise, leader of the X-Men, and my childhood hero.

Maybe I’m the obnoxious American that Europeans curse. But I don’t really care. But without hesitation, I walked over to Sir Stewart’s table, squatted down next to him and asked the question that no one can refuse: “How would you feel about taking a spin in a McLaren?”

Eyebrows rise. A smile is cracked. Waivers are signed. A friend made.

Mac Mini: would you buy one NOW?

The Mini is LONG overdue and no news of an update from anything I've read.

In the meantime, my system is on its last legs and running slowly, crashing once a week because it can't handle my external hard drive where I keep 110GB of music and play via iTunes. It's not tragic, but it's frustrating!!!

I use my system for iTunes, internet, Word and very light photo editing (can't even do it now with my old OSX but plan to use Pixelmator or iPhoto, maybe venture into Aperture if I get more involved with editing but I'm new to it so unsure yet now).

To buy, or not to buy....NOW?!

Television - Good / Bad / Ugly / Up-and-coming

A thread for all things television... the regular seasons are winding down / over (*snif* a six-month wait until Walking Dead returns? Nooooooooo!!!!)... Falling Skies is coming back shortly. What else is worth watching?

New Fargo TV series is strange and remarkable

Fargo is a prairie noir thriller set in the flatlands of small-town Fargo, Minnesota in the dead of winter. A drifter, Lorne Malvo, played with understated inscrutability and menace by Billy Bob Thornton, in what could potentially be the role of his career.....

Everyone has something to hide, and a sense of dark foreboding settles over the scene.

This Fargo is not an homage to the Coen Brothers’ film. It’s its own creation, with different characters and a cast of truly gifted actors giving it their all: Allison Tolman as a deputy sheriff with an innate curiosity about everyone and everything, and a natural gift for spotting out-of-place details; Colin Hanks as a young, dedicated career police officer about to learn how much he means to his young daughter; and veteran, homegrown character actors like Shawn Doyle and Brian Markinson, in pivotal roles, and performances to match.

Fargo, a 10-episode, limited series in the style of True Detective and American Horror Story, is filmed outside Calgary, and the production is impeccable, right down to the subtle, underplayed background music, the crisp clarity of ice crunching underfoot and the breathtaking cinematography. The real achievement of Fargo, however, is that it’s first and foremost one hell of a story, told simply and brilliantly.

Fargo debuts Tuesday, April 15, on FX Canada/FXX

Battlestar Galatica - another reboot (movie)

I don't know about this... seems a little soon after the last series....

'Battlestar Galactica' Movie: Remake In The Works From Universal

Please don't let it suck: So say we all.

It appears the rumours are true: the much-beloved franchise, "Battlestar Galactica," is getting a movie makeover. Variety is reporting that Universal is doing a "complete reimagination" of the story.

The popular TV series (which aired from 2003 - 2009) had already resurrected "BSG," in a sense. The story, about man-made robots (called Cylons) developing sentience and turning on humanity, has been told and retold in various movies, and can even be credited with inspiring some of pop culture's most riveting science-fiction.

"Transcendence" writer Jack Paglen has signed on to write the screenplay. Original series creator Glen Larson will produce the "Battlestar Galactica" film.

MacBook Pro mail/contacts

Hello, i am new to Mac. Decided to make the leap from PC. Purchased a Macbook Pro. Running Mavericks. I had no problem setting up my WiFi connection. Was able to install my wireless printer with no problems. I am trying to import my contacts from MS Outlook and am having little success. I checked out Mac Support forums, followed instructions to the letter. Exported my contacts list onto a thumb drive (.cvs files). Imported those files to the HDD on the Mac. Followed the procedures to import into my contacts app but only the names were imported none of the other information. What am i doing wrong?

All help is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Problems loading CD's into iTunes library

Have been loading compact discs on the hard drive of late 2013 Retina MacBook Pro 15 Inch, 16 Gig Ram. Every once in a while the MacBook Pro loads individual selections rather than the entire CD as a download. There seems to be no set pattern or reason.

Any ideas?

MacPaint for the 21st Century

A Reboot Of The Original MacPaint

Unless you’ve booted up your original Macintosh 128K recently--you know, that one with all the Mac team’s signatures inside that would have been a serious collector’s item had you kept it--you probably haven’t thought about bitmap creator MacPaint in a very long time (or at all). But thanks to Martin Braun, you can travel nearly 30 years back in time and try it right now, for free, in your browser.

His creation, CloudPaint, is a fairly literal re-enactment of the MacPaint 1.0 interface...

Interestingly - I can't get the darn thing to load in Safari. Google Chrome has no problem with it... likely an issue with Click2Flash or something on my end...

Duplicate file management?

Hi,

I've done a few quick searches online and on this forum to see if there was a recommended duplicate file management tool … spring cleaning (and shrinking hard drive season) and all.

While I've found a number of choices, few are fully 'free' and while free is always a nice bonus, I don't want to blindly download a bunch of trial apps to compare without first whittling down the list by way of asking for your experiences or suggestions. I'm willing to pay for the right software in the end but my priorities would be effectiveness/accuracy, cost, speed - and, of course, the ability to make the final call on what to delete (i.e. no default automagically-delete duplicates, just in case).

Anyone use a good duplicate file detector program that you'd like to suggest?

Please & thank you.
