Windows 10 (yes, that's right, 10. Not 9. They're skipping.)

Windows 10 kills the Start Screen, runs on wide variety of devices

Quote:

It’s no secret that Windows 8 was not a particularly successful release, as Microsoft struggled to convince both consumers and businesses of the virtues of its split nature. Fast forward to today, and the company has announced its successor, known as Windows 10. The next version of Microsoft’s operating system makes some big changes, perhaps most notably the removal of the much-hated tile UI.

First of all, that’s not a typo – Microsoft has decided to skip a number with the new release. Apparently somebody in Marketing thought "Windows 9" didn't sound like big enough a departure from the maligned Windows 8. But "Windows 10?" Now that's something completely new!

Quote:

On the desktop OS side of things, the first big change won't surprise anyone who's either used or followed the fortunes of Windows 8.x. The Start screen (initially known as Metro UI) is effectively dead. We say effectively, as the upcoming release won't completely eradicate the tile-based interface from the platform. Instead it shrinks it down to fit inside a reincarnated Start Menu.

Quote:

Microsoft will start distributing the Technical Preview build of Windows 10 for laptops and desktop machines on October 1. The consumer version of the operating system is expected to ship mid-2015.

The Beer Thread

So, I'm a huge craft beer fan, an unapologetic beer snob & have been doing my best over the course of the last 6 or 7 years to contribute to the downfall of mainstream fizzy yellow beer sales.

There aren't that many craft beer breweries in Alberta, more in BC, fewer in Sask. As such I spend much of each summer in brewery heavy Montana, sourcing new breweries, trying new brews & re-visiting old friends. I keep a home grown Numbers spreadsheet on my iPhone (synched to my desktop computer), detailing everything from brewery name, address, etc., to their beers I've tasted, the ingredients, ABV, IBU, date of tasting, etc. Yes, a little OC...

Last year I counted up the new beers I'd had for 2013 & it numbered 300. I thought, what the hell, how about a new beer a day for 2014? Currently at 345, I think it's a shoe-in. All told, I've had around 1500 craft beers from all over the world (I tasted around 200 before I hit upon the idea of actually keeping track). It's a great hobby.

Also have a small circle of friends who get together on a whenever basis to try new brews. Sometimes there's as few as two of us, some times as many as half a dozen.

I wanted to start this thread to talk about craft beer, the breweries, the people, home brews, anything to do with beer in general & craft beer in particular.

Have at 'er!

Recovering Evidence from SSD Drives in 2014: Understanding TRIM, Garbage Collection and Exclusions

Several years ago, Solid State drives (SSD) introduced a challenge to digital forensic specialists. Forensic acquisition of computers equipped with SSD storage became very different compared to acquisition of traditional hard drives. Instead of straightforward and predictable recovery of evidence, we are in the waters of stochastic forensics with SSD drives, where nothing can be assumed as a given.

With even the most recent publications not going beyond introducing the TRIM command and making a conclusion on SSD self-corrosion, it has been common knowledge – and a common misconception, – that deleted evidence cannot be extracted from TRIM-enabled SSD drives, due to the operation of background garbage collection.

However, there are so many exceptions that they themselves become a rule. TRIM does not engage in most RAID environments or on external SSD drives attached as a USB enclosure or connected via a FireWire port. TRIM does not function in a NAS. Older versions of Windows do not support TRIM. In Windows, TRIM is not engaged on file systems other than NTFS. There are specific considerations for encrypted volumes stored on SSD drives, as various crypto containers implement vastly different methods of handling SSD TRIM commands. And what about slack space (which has a new meaning on an SSD) and data stored in NTFS MFT attributes?

Different SSD drives handle after-TRIM reads differently. Firmware bugs are common in SSD drives, greatly affecting evidence recoverability. Finally, the TRIM command is not issued (and garbage collection does not occur) in the case of data corruption, for example, if the boot sector or partition tables are physically wiped. Self-encrypting SSD drives require a different approach altogether, while SSD drives using compressing controllers cannot be practically imaged with off-chip acquisition hardware. Our new research covers many areas where evidence is still recoverable – even on today’s TRIM-enabled SSD drives.

iPhone charging: erratic behaviour

Ok, I posted earlier about using a 3rd party Lightning connector and when doing so, my phone behaved erratically (ie. jumpy scrolling, erratic text input not being what i entered, switching to links on posts when not pressing the URL).

I've gone back to my original Apple Lightning cable and it does the same thing!

Could this be my phone or the base charger (which is an old one from my iPhone 3GS)?

When unplugged, my phone behaves as it should.

Oktoberfest!

It's that time of beer, er, year.

For some history on the event.

Went to Calgary's Oktoberfest event Friday evening, it was kind of a beer tasting event. Found it very expensive. $15 for Stampede Ground parking, $25 to get in the event (along with a 4oz plastic taster glass), tickets only in books of 10 for $10, anywhere from one to 3 tickets (most were 2) per 4 oz sample. Pretty easy to blow $60 or more on the evening.

This as opposed to a couple of beer tastings I attended in Montana this summer where the parking was free, the early gate access was $30, a 7oz taster glass was issued & unlimited tasting. Attended two others in Montana this summer, parking was free, paid extra for early access ($25) and a 7oz taster glass, beer tickets were a buck each, and all samples were only a buck each.

At all 4 Montana tastings there were also far more breweries & samples. Never less than 30 breweries, never less than 70 beers. And, the overall quality & selection of beers is far better at the Montana events.

2007 iMac won't stay alive!

I have a 2007 iMac that won't stay alive long enough to do a clean install.

I have booted from external USB Mavericks stick, managed to format the drive and successfully re-install the OS... but it won't stay alive. Initially, Disk Utility found errors.

Even booting from external firewire carbon copy cloned older OS doesn't work. It'll get into the OS, then randomly restart. The longer I leave the Mac turned off, the longer it seems to run for.

Malcolm Young, AC/DC, Dementia

AC/DC founder exit caused by dementia

MALCOLM Young, the Scots-born founding member of heavy metal legends AC/DC has called time on his career with the band due to a battle with dementia, reports claim.

It is understood Mr Young was admitted to full-time care at a facility in Sydney's Elizabeth Bay that is known for providing specialist treatment to suffers of the degenerative disease.

A message on the band's website said they would go on without him. Their new album, Rock Or Bust, will be released in December.

The AC/DC guitarist and songwriter's wife Linda reportedly moved Mr Young to Lulworth House, a care facility in the city's eastern suburbs.

It was announced that Stevie Young, nephew of the founding Mr Young and brother Angus, will play rhythm guitar on Rock Or Bust and will accompany the band on tour.

Young, who emigrated from Scotland to Australia at the age of 10 with his family, formed AC/DC in 1973 with his younger brother Angus, who has famously dressed as a schoolboy onstage for many years.

The band has previously survived the death of its singer when Bon Scott died in 1980 after a night of heavy drinking in London, to be replaced by Brian Johnson, who has remained as vocalist ever since.

Find this Alberta (?) photographer!

Found Photos Backpackers in Ollantaytambo (Case #010)

MARCH 1, 2014 AZRIEL KNIGHT

Found Photos Backpackers in Ollantaytambo (Case #010)

This is the only roll of film I have come across so far that was in a thrift shop and price tagged. Normally, they’re still in the camera. This particular roll was listed at $1

The Camera

No camera found with the roll of film. Not every photo was taken at the same focal length. It’s likely to be an SLR or P&S with a zoom.

The Film

I picked this up a few years ago, so the actual location of the film negatives is buried with my personal work. It’s either Kodak or Fujifilm, and not so relevant in this case. The roll was found in Alberta Canada.

The Images

A man and a woman, potentially a couple are backpacking in Ollantaytambo, a small town and Inca archeological site in southern Peru. I know this because the photographer was smart enough to take a picture of a map. ;)

The photos are methodical, and have good composition. You can clearly see both adventurers in separate shots.

Summary and Speculation

All 36 shots were taken and the roll was found here in Alberta, not Peru, so the camera didn’t fail and the images made it back, one can assume, with the two individuals. You can also assume that these are probably not all of the photos taken during their time there, and this may not even be their only stop.

iPad Air and YouTube video sound/no sound

I've noticed that when playing a YouTube video with the switch on the upper left side of my iPad in the OFF position, I won't get any sound when turning it to ON.

I have to pause the video, turn it ON and then play it again but the video freezes and I just get audio until 20-30 seconds later when the video catches up and I get both sound and audio.

iPad2 - ios8 - Mavericks, iTunes unable to sync.

I have an iPad 2 just updated to ios8 by way of connecting it to iTunes via USB to my iMac running Mavericks. All latest updates have been installed on all machines and devices.

iTunes starts by backing up the iPad, then determining apps to sync, then starts syncing the first app; and then it stays in that screen forever. It does not progress to syncing the second app at all. I left the machine like this for four hours and it's the same status.

What all I tried before posting here :

In iTunes I restored the iPad to factory settings and started from scratch. It restored to ios8, then I set up iCloud etc. on the iPad itself while still connected by USB, then started the sync process again from iTunes. Same exact result.

I then disconnected the USB, went into iPad settings and reset all settings and data, essentially bringing it back to factory settings. I then connected the iPad2 to the iMac by USB and started the sync - still the exact same thing happening.

Finally I ran permission repair on the iMac (don't know why, I just did it), and tried - same problem.

I am at my wits' end. The iPad seems to be working normally otherwise, the iMc is also working normally otherwise. Is there anything else I can try? I am obviously out of AppleCare, and there are no Apple Stores in India. There are so-called authorised resellers etc., but they will not touch an iDevice that was not bought in India, and even if they did, they do not know how to do anything other than the very basics that I already know how to do.

One thing that I am worried about now is, if the problem happens to be with iTunes or the iMac, then I cannot sync my iPhone5 or my wife's iPhone 5! I am terrified to trying to sync those now to see - in case they go kaput too, I am screwed.

Cheers

Printing Labels..

We have a bunch of thank you cards to send out.. can anyone recommend good label printing software, and good labels?

In the past I've read about Avery labels, but these days everyone seems to have some sort of stick-on label available, from Staples to Grand&Toy.. I checked the Avery site and they have templates for Pages but they all have snowflakes on them.

Printer is a Brother 2270, and I have Pages already. I see the Envelopes template in Pages but haven't tried it yet.. the envelopes are the default ones you get from Costco after templating a picture.

Thank you,

iPhone 6 - more data hungry?

Hi,

The problem I have with the new phones, more than anything, is having to deal with cell phone companies again in order to figure out how best to get one.

Last night I called my current provider, named a four letter word starting with F. The very ill informed and rather poorly trained CSR tried to convince me that the iPhone 6 uses WAY more data than previous generations of iPhones - to the tune of double the data.

At first I figured that it was a sales tactic but instead of pushing more data on me, she pushed an older model - that could be a sales ploy, too, but I wasn't sure.

Does your new iPhone 6 seem to use more data or do you even know/notice?

Just curious and it would be good to know before I got back into the cell phone CSR vortex.

For Sale iPad 2 64GB ***Screen Does Not Power On***

Selling my iPad 2 64GB.

Little bit of history. It fell and the screen (digitizer actually) cracked. It was replaced and worked flawlessly until a run in with some water. Ever since, the screen will not power on. I was able to update and wipe it. It is currently running 8.0.

The corners are a little rough, but the backing otherwise is immaculate. It has always been protected.

Wanted To Buy wanted old macs

Looking for

Plus,SE,Classic anything in this style

IIfx

950

6100

8100

9600

Why you ask. Because Im nuts. I had these and gave them away. Ill probably find some and fix them and put them on a shelf and never use them but for some reason my collection feels very incomplete without them.

I had owned literally over 50% of every model of Mac made over the past 20 years but through, moving and loss of jobs and divorce I had to ditch 95% of my collection :((

Now Im looking just for a few old Macs who I really liked to keep me company.

These will never be sold they are being collected and cared for and will remain in my custody.

Why just the old guys. I have enough from the Beige G3 and up.

Word of wise, never trust a friend who says they will store your equipment indefinitely for you. After the smoke clears and when you arrive 4 years later to look at your stash of prestine Macintosh Vintage equipment only to find an empty basement and a smirk comment that it was taking up too much space. A call would have been nice before you gave it all away or trashed it...

Sorry for the added rant..

Thanks

Chris

Apple verification

It figures. Just when you need something to work, it doesn't, and the solutions that used to work, fail.

Our office network has failed today... DHCP server down or some such thing. The tech has given everyone static IPs in the meantime to get us up and running.

Problem: only the ethernet- connected machines can go online, like my crappy HP touchscreen thingy. No problem, I can still get email via icloud.com, right? Wrong. Under new security precautions, I can´t log-in to my email from any other browser without verifying it using a third device, like my cellphone (which died) or my iPad (which is at home).

Security can really be a pain in the ass sometimes....

Lightning SD Card Reader not reading

I just bought this adapter and was able to upload photos once, but it doesn't seem to do anything now.

I'm using an iPad Air.

I'm opening iPhoto first, plugging in the Lightning connection and then inserting the SD card.

I've also inserted the SD card, plugged in the Lightning connector and opened iPhoto.

No luck. Any ideas?

EDT: I just put my iPad to sleep, plugged in the Lightning adapter and turned it back on and now it's working. So particular!

iPod parts

Since the iPod classic sold out so quite quickly, I was able to come in possession of a 5th generation white 30GB iPod. In my limited testing it works but I was wondering if any one here could recommend a good Canadian re-seller of iPod parts?

For now I'd like to replace both front and back of the unit as it has many scratches and also incase I need a replacement battery or higher capacity hard drive...

Can't log in to Messages and FaceTime

My Messages and FaceTime apps broke on my iMac. Neither accepts my Apple ID password anymore, despite the password still being used successfully for iTunes, etc. (My MacBook pro, which I didn't update has no issues and my iPads and iPhone are fine too.)

I've reinstalled OS X but the problem persists.

Can't Boot Past Apple Logo

My MacBook Air decided to call it quits last night.

Won't get past the Apple logo.

Here's what I've tried so far:

- Boot into Safemode (doesn't work)

- Reset PRAM

- Reset SMC

- Boot in Recovery mode, repair permissions and disk

- Run Hardware diagnostics (by holding D while booting)

I thought it was being caused by installing Blackberry Link, because as soon as I rebooted after doing that, that's when it wouldn't get past the Apple logo.

So I created a partition in one of my external HDDs and installed the OS on there to boot from. Once in there, I deleted all files associated with RIM or Blackberry, and restarted, but it still won't boot.

Right now I'm trying to figure out how to back up all of my apps and settings. During the set up, I skipped using the Migration Assistant. However, I've tried using it now, while running in the OS, and it just crashes, it won't start.

So I can copy my documents, pictures, etc, but all of my Applications, System Settings, etc will be lost if I have to format the drive and start from scratch.

Are there any other things I can try before I have to do that?

german channel on rogers cable?

My grandparents are coming in next week from Germany to visit for a few weeks. They are staying with my parents. They do not speak any english. My parents wanted to get a German channel so they had something to watch when they wanted to. So it has been left up to me to sort this out for them.

They have a cable box with the basic package I believe. Does anyone know what channel number is the German channel? Can you normally add a single channel for a short period of time? They would only want this channel for 3 weeks. Not sure if location matters, but it is Kitchener.

iTunes Match: Step 3 freeze

I've had Apple investigate why I'm getting stuck on Step 3 of iTunes Match and the best they could do was tell me to import batches of music at a time. It's most likely freezing at Step 3 due to a corrupt file.

The issue is I have 5,000 more files to upload and doing this in batches would take a VERY long time. Not worth my time. So I got a refund and cancelled my subscription.

Hopefully Match will improve in the future!

CRTC orders Netflix to hand over confidential data

The CRTC should be shut down.

CRTC orders Netflix to hand over confidential data | Canada | News | Toronto Sun

Quote:

On the final day of its television hearings, the CRTC demanded online giant Netflix release subscriber information, Canadian content numbers and project spending and set a strict Monday deadline to hand it over.

Corie Wright, Netflix's director of global public policy, sparred with those chairing the hearings in Gatineau, Que., Friday over whether the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) would keep such information confidential.

Wright said Netflix is concerned data would be submitted to the commission, but could later be released publicly, which would put the streaming service at a business disadvantage.

Tom Pentefountas, the CRTC's vice-chairman who headed the hearings, said Netflix makes millions of dollars off Canadian consumers and shouldn't have to be ordered to disclose the data.

CRTC chairman Jean-Pierre Blais ordered Netflix to hand over data by 5 p.m. Monday.

"We need the evidence," Blais said, noting the CRTC goes through hundreds of proceedings each year and confidentiality hasn't been an issue.

Wright said she would try to get the information to the CRTC.

"Given the nature of this information, we're just trying to be very careful," Wright responded. "It's really just the confidential treatment. I'm sorry if there's any appearance we're unwilling to do it."

Wright said Netflix has no physical presence here in Canada and has no Canadian employees.

But she noted some of the shows it offers subscribers are Canadian, such as Trailer Park Boys, so are some comedy specials and movies. She also pointed out the Netflix original series Hemlock Grove is largely shot in Canada.

The hearings were the third phase of the CRTC's Let's Talk TV: A Conversation with Canadians project.

The project has three main objectives: creating a television system that allows for choice and flexibility when Canadians pick programming services, encouraging the creation of compelling and diverse Canadian programming and providing a way for Canadians to solve disputes.

3rd party Lightning cable: weird iPhone behaviour

I just bought a cheapie Lightning cable to charge my iPhone 5 and noticed that when texting, my phone behaves erratically.

It'll autospell unrelated words and enter them automatically, or require extra emphasis when touching the screen (less sensitive to touch), or suddenly change into the contact details screen without prompting.

I wonder if the cable is supercharging my phone because it's acting irrationally, or is actually bad for my phone?

Couldn't get the 6 Plus today :( What should I do?

I was naive to think that I could go to a Rogers store around 7:45am today to get the iPhone 6 Plus.

How is it where you guys live? It's funny, my mall here had at least 300 people lining up, yet the Rogers downstairs in the mall was fully stocked with iPhone 6's and had nobody lining up.

But, Rogers told me that NO Rogers stores in this area (London) received the Plus, and that the Apple store only had 11 on hand (not including reserved) and obviously those 11 went to the first 11 people in the lineup.

So, I called Rogers instead. We are automatically redirected to "Rogers Private Support" as part of the business department and they were able to get me on a separate wait list at #385. No indication as to what that translates into for shipping times.

Do you guys think I'll have any luck, if I stay on top of it, calling Rogers stores in the area this week to try and get a 6 Plus as soon as they get a shipment in, and then cancelling my place in line?

It sucks because I already had arrangements to sell my iPhone 5 today with someone from Kijiji. So, so naive :(

iOS 8 problems?

Anyone finding any glitches?

I found one. When I have my iPhone 5S plugged into a 30pin adapter to use in my iHome speaker. It works fine, but when I remove it, the speakers in the phone no longer work as it is still set to "dock adapter" or whatever the name was. I can switch to airplay to my apple tv or boss sound system, but I cannot bring it back to just use the phone. It does change back to normal as soon as I turn wifi off though. A strange little glitch.

Skype credit for making calls

I'm in Taiwan to attend a wedding - try to work that into every conversation :D

My SaskTel mobile phone would work here, but I'm leery of roaming charges. I want to keep in touch with a special someone back home, so I checked Skype credit.

A few years ago, I was without phone service for a couple of weeks so I bought skype credit and thought I had lost the remaining credit.

I was surprised to learn that they reinstated the remaining $12 credit and I started making calls, so far, I've talked to my friend in Canada more than 30 minutes and I still have $11 credit.

Pretty cheap IMHO.

How do I change the name of an app on iPhone?

Downloaded Square POS software to give it a try.

Right now the Square icon shows up on my iPhone 5, iOS 6, fine but the name under the app is "Register". I'd like to change that to "Square".

I've tried a Get Info on the app in iTunes (where it is called "Square Register") in the hopes that I may edit it there, no joy.

I've also renamed the app to "Square" from "Register" in the iTunes Media folder, quit iTunes, restarted iTunes, the name of the file reverts to "Register"

Suggestions?

TIA.

Caution: Don’t Upgrade to iCloud Drive Yet in iOS 8

Caution: Don’t Upgrade to iCloud Drive Yet in iOS 8 | iPhone in Canada Blog - Canada's #1 iPhone Resource

Quote:

Last year, iOS 7 almost “broke the Internet” as users rushed to upgrade to the redesigned mobile operating system. Well, today is the day that Apple will officially release iOS 8 to the public, and it comes with plenty of new features to tempt you into an upgrade.

One such upgrade is iCloud Drive, a new service that will allow you to store all your presentations, spreadsheets, PDFs, images, and other documents in iCloud, and access them on any of your devices. Any edit you will make on one device will appear on all of them.

There is one tiny issue with iCloud Drive though: it is only compatible with iOS 8 and Yosemite, so until the desktop operating system drops next month, you won’t be able to sync your iPhone to your Mac (which is running another version of Mac OS X).

So when you upgrade to iOS 8 later today, make sure you resist the temptation and say, “Not Now” when Apple asks you if you want to upgrade to iCloud Drive.

Of course, this doesn’t mean that you won’t be able upgrade to iCloud Drive anytime, but to preserve your neurons, wait for the official Yosemite release.

Ecobee 3 smart thermostat

I though you might like to know that Ecobee, a Canadian company, has announced a new version of their smart wifi thermostat, the Ecobee 3.

https://www.ecobee.com/

Major upgrade to the looks of the thermostat--and it now works with a remote sensor. In my house the thermostat is in one of the least-used rooms (dining room). Something like the Nest would think that the house is unoccupied 90%+ of the time!! The Ecobee 3 comes with one remote sensor and you can have up to 32 in total. This lets it do a couple of cool new features they're calling "Follow Me" and "Smart Home/Away". Check the web site for details.

I've got the current Ecobee and they're apparently going to offer an upgrade deal. The other thing that swung me towards the Ecobee was the tracking and reporting available through their web portal. You can see day by day (or even hour by hour) how long your heating/cooling systems were running. Make a change and you can see the results in an hour or two. It also provides stats comparing your results to that of similar size houses in the same area. Heating and cooling costs are a big part of a household budget and they're not going to get smaller in the future!

The Ecobee 3 is supposed to be released on September 30 and they're taking pre-orders now.

Cheapest Firewire Enclosure in GTA?

These are pretty hard to find these days.. but I just inherited my Dad's old G4 iMac 700, and I set it up to use as a media player. Unfortunately, I realized it only has USB 1.1 ports, so my external HDDs don't work.

I was thinking of transferring over all my files that I'd like to have access to onto another drive and put it in a Firewire enclosure.

Thing is, I can't seem to find any for a reasonable price. They used to be pretty cheap.. now the cheapest I can find is $70 online, or over $30 on eBay.

iPhone / iPad Hotspot to ethernet connection ??

I have a device that collects and sends data to a website that enables me to monitor equipment through a web page. The device is extremely basic and only has an ethernet port that connects directly to a website via a dsl connection.

I do not have internet at the location where the equipment is located, so I periodically bring the unit home to upload the data to the website, were it is analyzed and problems can be diagnosed.

I do have an iPhone 5 with data plan, and also an iPad with cellular that also has a data plan.

I would like to be able to connect (wireless tether) my iPad or iPhone to the device when I am on site so the device can upload the information via my data plans.

SO, I am looking for something that will automatically connect to the iPhone or iPad and provide an internet connection via Ethernet cable to the device.

I explained this to a sales person at a local source and he sold me a D'Link DIR-605l wireless router. I have spent 2 days trying to set it up to connect to my phone or iPads hot spot with no luck,, I am going to return it in a couple days.

Has anyone accomplished this, is it possible??

Fun with Phishers!!

2 weeks ago I got a call that my "Windows Registration" did not go through and I needed to give the person on the other end access to my computer! He said something like "Windows Official Offiice" was where he was from and he could fix my "Registration problem" if I allowed him access to my system!

Once I told him I had a Mac he said he "Must have the wrong number"

Today I get a similar call from what he claimed was a "Federal department in Ottawa" called "Internet Security" and my Internet was showing that I was Hacked and was showing that I had several viruses. So I needed to allow him access in so he could "Remove" them.

After trying to get me to use the key beside the control key I said I didn't have that one, I had a Command key, then I head some background discussion in a foreign language, blah blah, Mac, blah blah Mac... Then they hung up:lmao:

So have the "Air Duct Cleaning Services" people finally given up and now they've switched to Phishing for info on peoples computers? I know a few seniors that could be easily fooled by this except for the fact that the people calling have such heavy accents it just screams "SCAM"!!!

NES30 Controller

Hi all! Just wondering if anyone has tried out this controller with iOS and if so what you think of it in terms of game support, battery life, etc. Cult of Mac has it for 25% off right now so I'm thinking about grabbing one. I love the retro-Nintendo look of it!

Setting up my iMac - Users / iPhoto / NAS / cloud access

Hi folks - I'm new to the forum, and new to owning an iMac, which we just got.

My Computers:

a. My wife and I will be the only users on the iMac.

b. We also have each an iPhone5, and have 1 iPad (might get another).

c. We also have 2 AppleTV boxes.

d. I would like to get another iMac later (for downstairs).

My Desires:

A. We wish to both be able to access, add to, and modify our photos.

B. We wish safe backup for the data.

C. I would also like to access our photos and data remotely, but I do not like the idea of storing stuff on the cloud.

My Questions are:

1. How best to set up the iMac? I believe 2 users is best, correct? If so, how best to access the iPhotos? I've read that we have to have a separate HardDrive to allow us both to access, add to, and modify the photos. Is this correct?

2. We wish safe backup for the data. I've been told to get a RAID device. We bought a G-RAID (supposedly has 2 HDs in it). But this RAID only has a USB connection, so it must be connected to the computer directly.

3. I would also like to access our photos and data remotely, but I do not like the idea of storing stuff on the cloud. I've heard that I should get a Network Attached Storage (NAS) device, with cloud access.....so I can connect to my own NAS (which will reside at my home) from anywhere. What is a good NAS to get?

4. How do I combine #2, and #3....now that I have this G-RAID, can I still use it? Or should I only use the NAS?

Many, many thanks in advance for any assistance you can give.

The Ottawa Linux Symposium

Hi folks,

Hello to those who remember me from years ago.

I haven't posted here lately. I guess I had a Mac phase a few years ago and I'm not currently an OS X or iOS user. I am typing this on my 27" iMac which is running Linux Mint, in Firefox. Many of you are probably using Firefox or some sort of open source software, like Darwin, the microkernel on which Mac OS X is based, which is what drew me into the Mac fold in the first place, or The Gimp (shamer of Photoshop piraters everywhere).

TL;DR? Cool T-Shirts here!

These open source projects are attractive to me because anyone can pick up the torch and maintain them in perpetuity in whatever form they wish.

In 2007 I visited the Ottawa Linux Symposium as a developer and user of the Linux kernel and U-Boot. It is a wonderful event, and I think huge numbers of open source community members come away feeling energized and with new connections, ideas and missions. And look at the papers that were written.

Here's where I get to the part about asking you for money.

What? The cheek of it!

... Please keep reading! This symposium was a good thing the community had going, but the 2009 dip hit the organization hard, and the chief organizer ended up having to expend considerable personal resources to try to keep the thing going.

Think about that. Linux is also created by huge corporations such as Google and hardware companies such as semiconductor companies (I used to work for one, Freescale). But the long term survival of this Free Software idea depends on a community of individual volunteers with immense talent. This community is important, and we cannot depend on corporations to value that side of it.

Take a look at the situation on the Indiegogo campaign for the Ottawa Linux Symposium here, and join me in supporting their effort to get back on track.

Go now! There are only a few days left in the campaign.

Mac Buying Advice: Fusion Drive

Hi

I have a mid-2013 13" MB Air and a mid-2010 21" iMac i3 4GB base model. My iMac feels really slow against the MB Air and it is time to replace it.

I want to purchase an iMac that feels as fast (or faster than the MB Air) however the 7200rpm drive is not as fast as SSD in the MBA.

My question is, if I purchase the 27" base model will it feel faster than the MBA?

If not, would I be better spending money on the fusion drive or upgrading from 8 to 16 MB RAM, or jumping up a level on from base? What will result in the biggest speed boost for the $$.

Usage is primarily web, Office, Lightroom and Photoshop. Parallels for MS Project.

Photoshop and Parallels/MSProject is where I really feel the slowness - we are talking several minutes to open files - whereas the MBA is instantaneous. I am not handling massive Photoshop files - mostly 100MB or less.

Goodbye 6gb data plan..

So, I'm two years into the three year contract with Rogers for my iphone 5. I've been thinking about upgrading to the iPhone this year, but then I started thinking.. "Will I be able to keep my 6gb for $30 deal I've had sine the phone came out?"

After talking to Rogers I can safely say that NO you can't keep it.

Now I'm in a quandary.. Do I upgrade, or wait 12 months and put off the inevitable?

The Mothership

So in March 2009 I went to the Apple Campus (1 Infinite Loop) and picked up some swag.

I wore one of my shirts "I visited the Mothership" to work today, and one of the fanboys was stammering that my shirt is fake, and that the Mothership hasn't even been built yet. Which is totally ironic that fanboyism would have known about various branded stuff for purchase at the company store.

Their old campus in Cupertino was the Mothership of old, right - not the new UFO building that's under construction?

He doesn't believe me when I said there was a Company Store.. but whatever.. just wondering about the use of the "Mothership" corporate brand.

Thanks...

R.I.P. JAWS - Richard Kiel (Bond films)

Richard Kiel, 'Jaws' villain in 2 James Bond films, dead at 74

Richard Kiel, the towering actor best known for portraying steel-toothed villain Jaws in a pair of James Bond films, has died. He was 74.

Kelley Sanchez, director of communications at Saint Agnes Medical Center, confirmed Wednesday that Kiel was a patient at the hospital and died. Kiel's agent, Steven Stevens, also confirmed his death. Both declined to provide further details.

The 7-foot-2-inch performer famously played the cable-chomping henchman who tussled with Roger Moore's Bond in 1977's The Spy Who Loved Me and 1979's Moonraker. Bond quipped of the silent baddie: "His name's Jaws. He kills people."

Despite appearing in several other films and TV shows, such as Silver Streak and The Longest Yard, the role of Jaws was an iconic one Kiel could never escape.

"To this day, I go out in sunglasses and a hat because people will shout `Hey, Jaws!' at me from across the street," he told the Daily Mail earlier this year.

Can I add a DVD writer to my Mac

I have just been given an older Mac Note book.

It is a 2007 ( I Think) laptop with a Core 2 duo cpu, 2.1 GHz, and 2 GB DDR2 memory.

The combo drive reads and writes CD but only reads DVDs I have been told.

My Question is can I add an additional DVD writer ( originally used on an old PC ) To the Mac and will it work?

Jailbreaking and XBMC

Been doing some reading and watching short videos on "how to".

Curious: I have an Apple TV 1 and wondering if it is worth going through the many steps to jailbreak and download the varied software for XBMC.

Does this work well in Canada? Do you need a VPN ?

Don't spend a huge amount on satellite feed currently but with Get iPlayer Automator and Netflics , I find I am using the satellite offerings for news, docs and pbs primarily and would drop the satellite if I could receive some of the extras G.O.T for example, especially during the winter.

Anyone done this and enjoying the results ? I am also considering the option of OTA antenna.

That free U2 album

I have not used iTunes on my Mac Mini til now, it's way different from the old style one I have on my G4!!! Anyway, I seem to have accessed the new U2 album Songs of Innocence as I can see them in iTunes but they can't be dragged and dropped into my Library because my computer is not "authorized." I keep getting that msg. What does this mean and what do I have to do to authorize it so I can have this album in my Library? It's probably so simple :)

Franklin Expedition ship found

Interesting news.

'A really important day': Franklin Expedition ship discovered in Arctic waters

Quote:

The key to unlocking the mystery of the missing Franklin Expedition came just days ago when a coast guard helicopter pilot spotted a dark U-shaped object in the Arctic snow the size of a man's forearm.

The time-ravaged, orange-brown hunk of metal, vaguely in the shape of a tuning fork, bore the markings of the Royal Navy. It was a davit — part of a lifting mechanism, likely for a lifeboat, for one of the two lost Franklin ships.

More:

Quote:

Geiger was with the search team that finally confirmed the discovery of one of two lost ships from Sir John Franklin's doomed Arctic expedition.

The remarkable find completes one half of a puzzle that long ago captured the Victorian imagination and gave rise to many searches throughout the 19th century for Franklin and his crew.

The search team confirmed the discovery in the early morning hours of Sunday using a remotely operated underwater vehicle recently acquired by Parks Canada. They found the wreck 11 metres below the water's surface.

Further:

Canada finds British vessel that vanished on doomed North-West Passage expedition in 1840s

Quote:

One of the most enduring and tragic mysteries of British maritime history came a crucial step closer to being solved on Tuesday when Canada announced the discovery of a Royal Navy vessel that disappeared in the Arctic nearly 170 years ago.

The HMS Erebus and HMS Terror were last seen in 1845 under the command of Sir John Franklin on a doomed Admiralty expedition to find the legendary Northwest Passage of ice-filled waters linking the Atlantic and Pacific.

Oh, & just a little dig at the warmists... (from first link)

Quote:

The discovery itself was serendipitous, said Jody Thomas, deputy commissioner of operations for the Canadian Coast Guard.

The team was supposed to be searching in a more northern area, but the ice cover was too heavy, she said.

"The ice is very heavy this year. There is a myth that there is no ice in the Arctic, and that is exactly that, a myth. And so they were forced to go a little further south."

M'bold.

Ha!
