iTunes Movie of the Week-gone?

In the iTunes store, recently, I haven't been able to locate the Movie of the Week ($0.99). The U.S. iTunes store still lists them. Are they gone from Canadian iTunes, or have I just had too much eggnog?

Best Option to run OS incompatible software?

I have a number of Macs still running Snow Leopard because upgrading them to a later Mac OS would make some existing applications and periphrals incompatible.

I realize these Macs have to be upgraded at some time, but now is not the time.

Some of these Macs also need to run the GoToWebinar and GoToMeeting software by Citrix.

Until a short while ago that was no problem becausethe Citru=ix softwareran just fine with OS10.6 - then Citrix decided that newerversions of their softwarewill only run with Mac OS10.7 and up and suddenly, over night, with absolutely no warning, the software that people paid for no longer worked on their Mac.

How can that happen?

Well, it turns out that Citrix downloads the latest version of their software to the Mac automatically without the users knowledge and that new version is no longer compatible with SL.

Hard to believe but true.

I would like to know how they download and install softwareon the Mac without authorization, but that is a topic for another day.

Right now I would like to determine what the best options are to run both 10.6 and 10.7 (or 10.8) on the same Mac.

I assume I can just partition the harddrive and run 10.6 with all the existing data on one partition and 10.7 (or 10.8) on the other partition but that would mean I need to reboot every time I switch Mac OSs.

Arethere any better options?

Bottom line: I need to run 10.6 99% of the time and 10.7 only for an hour once a week for the Citrix software.

Moving Yosemite Mail to a Windows Application.

One last step to migrate all my Apple documents and important info to Windows. Mail.

The steps I used to take to move my mail back and forth between Windows and the Mac in OS 10.7 are not working. Thunderbird and Opera, for example, have migration programs that will not work in Yosemite. I don't know why. Haven't found any answers online, but other people also report having this problem.

To clarify, I want to move all my mail accounts from the Mac to a program that will work in Windows. I have hundreds of folders going back years with thousands of messages, and sometimes I have to refer to them for somewhat important reasons.

What are we all doing wrong?

iPhone 6 screen protector question...

Not sure if I should be posting this here, or the other forum... But just wondering, has anyone used the service Future Shop provides for putting on a screen protector? I was in there yesterday, they claim they 'cut' the screen protector to size... I find this hard to believe because of the cutouts for the speaker/camera at the top and the home button, but I guess it's possible. In the past I've just got them to put on a Zagg InvisibleShield... and that was my plan this time too, but I've read bad reviews on MOST screen protectors fitting the curved glass of the iPhone 6's... What have others used? or gone without? I'm planning on using this case, so a screen protector might not be as critical...

My home network consists of a 2Wire Bell modem, two iMacs, MacBook Pro,Canon mp560 printer, and iPads.

I want to share the Documents folder between the two iMacs. In both sharing sheets of system preferences I selected file sharing and added the Documents folder. When I the used the Go menu item of the Finder and entered the IP address of one of iMacs from the other machine the server connection failed. All my devices can access the internet. When I ping one iMac from the other all packets are lost.

Just got back from Morocco

Retirement is such hard work and so stressful that my wife and I decided to take a holiday :)

We went to Morocco for 10 days. It was surprisingly nice. The country, even being so poor, is so clean and tidy - completely unlike what one would expect from a third world country!

Morocco is a Muslim country, but they are very clear in distinguishing themselves from an Islamic State. The country is a monarchy with a functioning democracy fashioned after France's constitution; and it is that law that applies and not Islamic law. A very progressive country where it is forbidden to teach radicalism in mosques etc. A very progressive King who still wields authority over the parliament, but actually works WITH the parliament instead of being a dictator.

The King is a qualified lawyer and has married a commoner who is an IT professional. And he has only one wife.

Polygamy is not illegal, but is discouraged, and as of a few years ago, a husband would require a witnessed and written permission from his first wife to marry another one.

They have clean, good roads and motorways, modern infrastructure, and I never saw a fat cop - male or female.

Very friendly people, they speak French and Arabic, with most touristy places populated by people who speak also Spanish, Italian, English, German, Portuguese, Dutch etc., all very fluently.

My wife and I were always immediately identified as Indian and people started to sing Bollywood songs at us and spout Bollywood dialogues and talk about Bollywood stars. Seems they all are avid watchers of Bollywood movies though they do not speak the language!

Morocco is allegedly famous for spices. I say "allegedly" because I saw zero evidence of any of it it any of the food we ate. The food was totally bland and completely tasteless. And I shall be glad to never ever see another Tagine in my life.

On our onward journey we had a very tight connection in Abu Dhabi and therefore our luggage did not make it to Casablanca. Considering we only had one night in Casablanca, the airline offered to deliver our luggage onward to our next destination, Fes; and then all was well again.

There was snow in the mountains. The one thing my mind could not relate to was "Winter Wonderland" and "Muslim Country" and "The Sahara" in the same sentence!

We went in a 4x4 into the sand dunes to watch the sunset, and I saw the most incongruous thing - two Touareg men in the middle of The Sahara on mopeds. Yes, the small piddly two-wheelers with a piddly motor and pedals.

The only negative in the whole trip was a that we had a scotswoman who was coughing all through the trip (poor woman was sick) and on the last day, my wife and I, another friend, and a couple from South-Africa were all infected and had a bad trip home. My wife and I are still sick with a bad cold, cough, fever and body-ache. And no, it's not Ebola :)

And yes, we spent the last day of the trip back in Casablanca, and we did go to Rick's Cafe (one of the ten replica Rick's Cafes in Casablanca) and had dinner. It is an exact replica of the one in the movie Casablanca. Quite expensive, but the food was not bad.

And of course, we saw a few belly-dances :)

Sorry, I did not shoot any "documentary" pictures of all the touristy things - I never do that.

Cheers

After working on iMacs innards,it shuts down on start-up..

Mid 2011 imac 20.5" with a bad optical drive:

I decided remove the OD and clean out the dust. Although I'd gone to iFixit and read the instructions, I still managed to yank out the display data cable's fragile connector but it looked to be ok.

Put everything back, and although there was a boot chime, just a black screen.

Opened it up again and found the display data cable was disconnected. Closed it up again, and this time the iMac booted up fine and ran great, except some fan was running at high speed. Turns out I had the re-install the OD heat sensor, which I'd removed initially with the OD.

In all I removed the screen 3 times (trouble with screen screws disappearing under the frame magnets caused me some grief) and it's all back together but this time it boots up briefly then shuts down.

I've done some googling on the matter and it seems to refer mostly to hard drive failure or bad sectors, which I don't believe applies in my case.

Mainly because of the flimsy display connector, I don't want to dismantle the display again to look for a loose cable unless that would be the opinion on someone here who knows more on the matter than I do...

Any suggestions?

SSD with OS 10.10 revert to OS 10.9

My friend had someone to replace the stock HDD with a SanDisk Extreme II SSD in her 13-in. MBP. This person installed OS 10.9 for my friend and had Trim Enabler running.

A few weeks ago my friend upgraded the OS to 10.10, not knowing the issue with Trim Enabler. She started to worry about the performance of the SSD over time and its longevity. She asked me if I could revert the OS to 10.9 so Trim Enabler could be used again.

After backing up the files on the SSD, I am thinking about doing a clean install of OS 10.9 with simply erasing the SSD and installing the OS. Note that I would do a simple erase drive, not a secure erase. Once OS 10.9.5 is installed, I would activate Trim Enabler.

Is this the proper way?

Or should I run Trim Enabler on the SSD first before erasing it? i.e. hooking up her MBP via target mode and launch Trim Enabler to run the trim operation, then disconnect the target mode setup and do the OS 10.9 installation.

The one thing I miss about North America is Christmas. India just does not have the same atmosphere around Christmas that North America has. I am not talking about the commercialism here, it's just that the whole atmosphere over there changes around Christmas, and that is not there here.

Who controls what is on your Mac?

BBC News - Apple issues first automatic bug update for Macs

Apple pushes first ever automated security update to Mac users | Reuters

What else is Apple pushing out on to Mac owners/users without their knowledge or permission?

If it can do this with a so-called security update then it can do the same on behalf of the NSA/GCHQ, the Mafia, bent cops, a rogue state’s “glorious leader” or some other nefarious party. By building such a vulnerability into OSX Apple is exposing innocent Mac owners to having false evidence planted on their Macs or otherwise being set up or attacked by third parties. eg If child porn or Barclay’s Bank Libor/forex rigging evidence is found on a Mac how can any court be sure that it was not planted there by some crooked cop, regulator or prosecutor, either directly or using Apple as an accessory/accomplice?

The ethical actions that Apple should have taken are:

1 Do everything possible to ensure that OSX on all Macs is secure from outside interference of all kinds. ie only the owner or somebody deliberately authorised by the owner to act on the owner’s behalf, can install updates or make changes to their Mac’s contents or apps. This should be basic for any OS software developer with common sense, intelligence, competence and integrity!

2 The security update profiled above should have been released in the normal way with owners being advised that an update is available, what it is about and having a choice of whether or not and when to install it.

Such shifty behaviour damages Apple’s reputation and destroys the credibility of Macs for all users requiring any sort of privacy or security - ie just about everyone.

Larger iPhone screen, larger letters on screen?

Here's my problem. Enormous fingers, such that if I borrow a friend's iPhone to type a message one finger strikes three keys. I know it is possible to purchase a touch pointer however most seen, have a large rubber tip, and we're back to the too large a finger scenario.

So with the newer iPhone and the physically large size, has the actual size of the letters on the keyboard become physically large thus allowing one of my fat fingers to connect and result in one letter only, at a time?

Currently own a cheap flip phone, which is used but once a month if that. One reasons as noted above. Had thought of a mini-iPad, however as a telephone, no way.

I could go to another brand of telephone however would encounter the same problem.

The speaking a message with Siri was one solution suggested however what Siri hears and what is the result are not always similar, let alone the same.

In Europe, obesity is a disability...

In Europe, obesity is a disability: Court ruling forces companies to offer overweight staff lighter work loads

Quote:

Being fat is a disability, EU judges have ruled, meaning that companies in Europe must offer obese staff bigger chairs, special parking spaces and a lighter work load.

Thursday’s judgment by the European Court of Justice means that fatness “can constitute a disability” under EU equality at work legislation – a ruling that is legally binding for all British employers.

Fabulous. Hope they won't mind having their pay docked for doing less work, as well. I imagine there are going to be far less hirings in their future. Talk about shooting oneself in the foot.

And, now that's it's OK to categorize obese persons, surely they won't mind being charged extra for things like aircraft seating, among others.

Spotlight on an empty stage

(I've posted this twice--probably not cool. First I searched and found a rant from 2013, and posted this there. Then I doubted I'd find an answer or even enough sympathy there (:o) so I'm starting this new thread...)

I just found and registered for Eh to figure Spotlight's empty field out. Ever since I upgraded this Macbook Pro to 10.8.5 (it's a 2012-ish 2GHz Intel i7 with 4 GB, bought when I dumped hot coffee on my previous Macbook Pro), the Searchlight is stumped. Empty! Used to be, I could type in a letter or two and instantly WHAM! my sought item was somewhere in the list. 1 second. Now it can't find anything.

Not just the external, now-full external hard drive, but even on the Pro's hard drive itself. Just now, for e.g., was trying to load a photo of my 2 dogs (now down to 1) for my profile pic, can't find the 'yin-yang' titled photo. It used to be amazing. It's true that my external hard drive (where I believe that photos resides) has been often unplugged, whereas it used to be permanently USB'd when it still had room, but it may be on for days and still I get ... blank. It offers "Search Web for ___" or "Search Wikipedia for ___." That's it!

How can I force the system to re-index the lot and get me back to where I had been?

Memories Of Christmas Past

Every year as this festive season comes and goes, it leaves me with many fond memories of Christmas over the years. Each year that one ages, it adds to those memories just as sure as it diminishes one’s desire for material things.

They say with age comes wisdom and while not true in every case, it does seem to deepen around the holidays. I thought a thread about your own experiences might give some leave to share those memories with others here.

It might be a story you want to share, or perhaps just a short list of things that gave you joy, either as a kid or an adult or a grandparent. Let me begin with this observations:

● My earliest childhood memories were of helping my parents decorate the living room for Christmas. Rolls of green and red crepe paper were bought (and saved from year to year) and unrolled together, then twisted many times to form colourful ‘streamers’ which hung with tacks from room corner to room corner. They were attached in the middle by a thumb tack and a paper folding bell was opened and hung at room centre on that same tack. The we opened a box of ‘tinsel’ finely cut strips of glistening foil about 18 inches long and one piece was hung across the centre of each twist of those streamers. It wasn’t much, but it was Christmas. Once done, the tree would follow completing the transformation of the living room to a kid’s fantasyland.

Care to share your memories?

Rogers 250 Mbps - only 25 Mbps straight to iMac (wired) but works with xbox one

Hi everyone, here's the story: I recently went from 75 Mbps on an old Rogers plan to 250 Mbs on a new one. In doing this I had to exchange my old modem for a new one. After getting everything set up I noticed it seemed slower instead of faster, so ran some tests. Yup, slower! Here are my strange results:

1. From modem to older Airport Extreme to iMac, all wired - 60 Mbps (the original setup)

2. From modem straight to iMac, wired - 25 Mbps (what? slower?!?!)

3. From modem straight to XBox One, wired - 300 Mbps (!)

I've also tried some wi-fi tests with the iMac, iPad Air, etc - all around 25 Mbps. Uploads for all tests, wired and wireless, were about the same - 10 Mbps. Also, I did these tests more than once, on different days, to rule out fluke or coincidental variables.

From the xbox test I know that the connection is there - I really am getting the 250. I find it very strange that going through an old airport extreme makes it faster.

I called Rogers (prior to the xbox test) - and the guy tried some stuff for several minutes, ended up telling me that there was going to be a firmware update for the modem that coincidentally was going to happen that night, something about known issues with certain network cards, etc... Of course today there is no change in performance. i could tell he was lying.

Anyone have any clues what is going on, or how to fix it? Other tests to try? All suggestions appreciated! Thanks.

PS - it's a mid 2011 iMac

Bluetooth mouse problems with Mavericks

Is there something I should know about Bluetooth mice and Mavericks?

Two different Macs, two different mice, both unusable.

First is an iMac with a Magic Mouse. It connects and cursor moves but the scroll feature does not work. I went into Accessibility and turned on scrolling but it refuses to scroll. Even reset the PRAM but that didn't help.

I tried pairing a Dell Bluetooth Travel Mouse and it pairs but the mouse cursor doesn't even move.

Second is an old MacBook Pro 15". Same issues. Magic Mouse does not scroll. Dell mouse pairs but doesn't function.

Wired USB mice work just fine on both computers. Trackpad works fine on the MBP.

I know there are no "drivers" per se in Mac OS but is there some software update I'm missing?

RBC Contract Job

Does anybody work at RBC as contractor or know somebody who does?

Since the summer of 2013, RBC does not accept invoices from contractors any more, instead, RBC will treat contractors as regular salary employee and do payroll deductions such as income tax, CPP, EI, etc.

I wonder is there a way I can claim my expenses when doing the income tax return like the sole proprietors?

So just where are the Christmas threads?

No Ho Ho?

via ehMac.ca http://ift.tt/1woKDCG

Not sure about the direction Apple is going.

Installed OS X on my old 2009 iMac i7 as I was going to get prepared for newer hardware.

What a mistake. Constantly crashes on the sleep wake cycle. I can’t use fliqlo at all. Running any of the ultility programs and online suggested fixes do not work. Had to completely disable the screensaver and the sleep wake cycle still locks up the machine.

Never had any problems with 10.6 or 10.7. I tried the 10.8 and 10.9 versions, and quickly took them off as I didn’t like them. Seeing that new harware like the retina iMac and retina Macbook require it, thought I would try to get used to it. Windows 7 works far better than Yosemite on my iMac, which is truly sad. I don’t dare install Yosemite on my Macbook Pro. The problems OS X are now giving me are among the reasons that I switched from Windows in the first place. It no longer, "just works", like it used to.

Apple operating systems were once simplistically beautiful in a Zen like way with perfect functionality. Those days seem to be gone. The last few updates of iLife applications have not been improvements at all. The simplified functional and intuitive way the Apple operating system and applications once worked is now a thing of the past and seems to be getting worse and increasingly annoying, not better, with each update.

Apple should consider naming their OS after fruit. I would suggest they rename Yosemite “Lemon”. Maybe the next edition will be Banana Peel.

As I can’t run OS X 10.6 or 10.7 on new Apple computers, I am seriously considering switching to new hardware running Windows. As laptops go, I can no longer get a 17” or matte screen or internal optical drive. I can get high performance windows laptops that can run 32gb of ram, have dual hard drives, dual videocards that can be removed and upgraded, etc. No such option through Apple. My last reliable 17” Macbook Pro was a 2010 which was useless due to the 8gb ram limitation. My 2011 Macbook Pro was a self destructing unreliable nightmare. I had to go to a small 13” Macbook Pro, I want a 17” screen and more than 16gb of ram. If I want a retina Macbook I have to buy it pre configured from Apple, and can't upgrade it. Same with the new Mac Mini. Not good.

Startup delay after upgrading HD in 2012 iMac

The other day I replaced the 1 TB 5400 drive in my 2012 21.5" iMac with an SSD. The speed increase is really noticeable, but I note now that there is a 15 sec delay between the time I start up the Mac and the time the Apple symbol appears. There was no such delay before; it's almost as though the Mac is looking for my drive. I check on System Preferences that the drive is selected as the boot drive. The Mac is running the latest version of Yosemite.

Any idea how I can fix this?

ISIS recruits: Cooking and cleaning is the reality facing fighters

Quote:

LAST week Indian student Areeb Majeed was just one of several recruits who found out the hard way what life fighting for IS is really like.

Majeed travelled to Iraq to join the Islamic State group in May only to return home disillusioned after jihadists made him clean toilets and do other menial jobs.

Something his mother should have taught him to do already.

Not only did fighters complain about the winter conditions but one remarked how he was missing the simpler things in life, like his iPod working.

“I’m sick and tired. My iPod doesn’t work anymore,” one recruit wrote. “I have to return.”

I've had horrendous issues connecting to FaceTime from an older macbook running 10.6.8. The solution, I've been told, is to update to FaceTime 1.0.5. Only problem is the app store stalls when I try to grab it, and there are no downloads anywhere. I've tried torrents - everything. How hard can it be to find 1.0.5??

U.S. Seeks To Normalize Relations With Cuba

This is absolutely wonderful news for the people of Cuba!:clap::clap::clap::clap::clap:

Quote:

The United States and Cuba exchanged prisoners Wednesday as part of a deal to expand trade, increase travel, and normalize relations between the U.S. and its six-decade communist foe, government officials said Wednesday.

"We will end an outdated approach that has failed to advance our interests," Obama said in making a formal announcement at the White House. "These 50 years have shown isolation has not worked."

The biggest shift in the American-Cuban relationship since formal ties were severed in 1961 — the year the president was born — includes new rules for banking and financial dealings as well as a general easing of the U.S. embargo against Cuba and the opening of a U.S. embassy in Havana, said Obama and other officials.

Obama said the decades-long embargo has had little effect on Cuba's regime, and that encouraging more engagement will help promote reform in the long run. He linked the move to the decision in the 1990s to normalize relations with Vietnam, with which the U.S. had fought a war.

As Obama spoke, Cuban President Raul Castro -- brother of communist revolutionary leader Fidel Castro -- made a similar announcement in Havana. Echoing Obama, Castro said he welcomed new ties to the United States, though differences between the two countries remain.

Obama and Raul Castro spoke by phone Tuesday about the agreement, officials said, the first direct contact between American and Cuban leaders since Fidel Castro led the communist revolution in 1959. (Fidel Castro, old and ailing, did not participate in the talks.)

Among others who helped broker the deal, officials said: Pope Francis, who sent a letter on the subject to Obama and Raul Castro. Officials said that Obama and the pope discussed Cuba during the president's visit to the Vatican in March.

The agreement includes Cuba's release of Alan Gross, an American citizen arrested in 2009 on espionage charges for trying to provide Internet service to Cuban residents. The U.S., meanwhile, agreed to release three Cubans accused of spying and imprisoned in the United States, officials said.

U.S. officials said they also obtained the release of an un-named "intelligence asset" who had been imprisoned in Cuba for two decades.

"This morning, Alan Gross has departed Cuba on a US government plane bound for the United States," an administration official said in a statement. "Mr. Gross was released on humanitarian grounds by the Cuban government at the request of the United States."

Officials spoke on condition of anonymity, pending the formal announcement by Obama.

Three members of Congress -- Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vermont; Sen. Jeff Flake, R-Ariz., and Rep. Chris Van Hollen, D-Md. -- traveled to Cuba to secure Gross' release and accompany him on the trip home, according to a statement from Van Hollen's office.

The party landed at an air base near Washington at around 11:30 a.m. ET.

Old iMac HD/SSD question

I've just installed an SSD in place of my original HD in an early 2009 24" iMac.

It's fairly small, and doesn't have enough room for my iPhoto and iMovie libraries. For these libraries, I'd like to avoid having to have an external drive plugged in, and was considering adding a second dedicated drive to the optical drive bay. I have a few possible scenarios that I might choose, and would like some input if possible:

Scenario 1: Use HD I removed from iMac in the optical drive bay and keep new SSD in original HD location.

Question: Would I need a caddy to hold the HD in place in the optical drive bay, or is the HD the same width as the optical drive and able to be secured on its own?

Question: I know there's a temperature sensor for the optical drive location, but would the fan on that side of the computer be able to sufficiently cool the HD?

Scenario 2: Put HD I removed back in its original spot and put the SSD in the optical drive bay with a caddy to hold it in place.

Scenario 3: Purchase additional SSD and put in optical drive bay. More expensive, and not sure if I want to go this route with the age of this computer.

POS for Mac?

I did a search for Point of sale, they were pretty old, 2003. So though it was time for a new question since things have obviously changed since then.

Looking for a very simple POS system for work. We get people now and then coming in off the street and wanting to pay cash, which always sends us scrambling to try and make change. Primarily we deal with repeat customers who have accounts. I am looking for a cash drawer, receipt printer and mac software, would be great if it integrated with our visa/debit machine (monaris). The one that came up when googling this was MacPOS MacPOS Solutions , price looks reasonable, I can get basic software, drawer and receipt printer for $499. Problem is, I know nothing about these things. Is this a good company, where else should I look for this?

Force delete file in ~/Public/Drop Box

I transferred a locked file on my Mac running OS 10.6.8 to my other OS 10.9.5 Mac ~/Public/Drop Box. I can't delete the file from Drop Box because it is locked. I did Get Info hoping to unlock the file. But the option to uncheck the "Locked" box is greyed out. I cannot change sharing & permission either.

I then tried to use MainMenu to force delete the file. Didn't work either.

How can I delete the file?

EDIT: Just deleted the file! I did Get Info on the OS 10.9.5 Drop Box and changed the permission of "everyone" to Read & Write. Then I went to the OS 10.6.8 Mac to access the Drop Box on the OS 10.9.5 Mac to unlock the file. After that I could delete the file off the 10.9.5 Mac.

For Sale 2009 17" mbp as is

FOR SALE MacBook Pro "Core 2 Duo" 2.8 17" Mid-2009 Serial # w89490z58ya. Bought in December 2009. This particular example is plain vanilla as far as the specs go.

It is in excellent cosmetic condition. There is a bit of finger burnishing on the track pad. The machine is/was my wife's and it seldom left the house. It has been exceptionally well cared for. The screen is perfect, as is the trackpad, keyboard, etc. Everything was functioning well. The case is pristine - no dings, scratches or anything of that sort except for small skuffs around the feet which seems (in my experience) to be pretty normal. I will be putting up pictures shortly.

Etiology of the issue. For the last several months it has put up the "service battery" then "change battery". We took it to the Genius(?) Bar two or three times but each time the (alleged) Genius said that 'no, the battery was OK' and did the usual SMC and PRAM resets (which I had already done myself).

About 2 weeks ago the machine failed to boot at all. This time Genius said it was the battery!! So we had to leave it to be replaced. 48hrs later, we got the call that it was ready. When we got there it still would not boot. The Genius managed to get it to boot when on charger a couple of times and suggested the issue was the hard drive but I could not figure that symptoms pointed to a HD issue.

SWMBO had a xmas project to get finished so we paid for the battery replacement ($260!!) and took the machine home. When we got home it would not boot - power supply of not. The battery charges OK.

But frankly, I don’t think the battery ever was the real issue (or the HD for that matter)!! although the battery did indeed definitely need replacing. As per the Genius suggestion re the hard drive, I removed the drive for testing. I have a NewerTech Universal USB drive kit and when connected to my own computer it worked perfectly.

My wife had been thinking of getting a smaller, lighter machine anyway, the nearest Apple Store (and the fact that repair would likely equal the cost of a replacement more or less) being a 150km round trip and the 17” is 5 years old so we have ordered a 13” MBP refurb.

So the 17” is available “AS IS”. “As is” is as described with hard drive removed. I want to keep the drive for security reasons and as backup in restoring services of SWMBO on the new computer. I suspect that is a project such as this a hard drive really isn’t that big a deal anyway.

Asking $350 + shipping considering the battery is brand new and it really is cosmetically exceptional. I will entertain offers. PM me if interested.

Also available InCase neoprene-foam sleeve designed for the 17”MBP. PM offers.

Things that make you say/think Hmmm?

Why is the Earth moving away from the sun?

New Scientist

Quote:

Skywatchers have been trying to gauge the sun-Earth distance for thousands of years. In the third century BC, Aristarchus of Samos, notable as the first to argue for a heliocentric solar system, estimated the sun to be 20 times farther away than the moon. It wasn't his best work, as the real factor is more like 400.

By the late 20th century, astronomers had a much better grip on this fundamental cosmic metric – what came to be called the astronomical unit. In fact, thanks to radar beams pinging off various solar-system bodies and to tracking of interplanetary spacecraft, the sun-Earth distance has been pegged with remarkable accuracy. The current value stands at 149,597,870.696 kilometres.

Having such a precise yardstick allowed Russian dynamicists Gregoriy A. Krasinsky and Victor A. Brumberg to calculate, in 2004, that the sun and Earth are gradually moving apart. It's not much – just 15 cm per year – but since that's 100 times greater than the measurement error, something must really be pushing Earth outward. But what?

One idea is that the Sun is losing enough mass, via fusion and the solar wind, to gradually be losing its gravitational grip (see Astronomical unit may need to be redefined). Other possible explanations include a change in the gravitational constant G, the effects of cosmic expansion, and even the influence of dark matter. None have proved satisfactory.

This is indeed my thought on the subject and seems to be scientific common sense. The other possible reasons may also come into play, but then again they could all be contributing factors at the same time. It need not be an either or scenario (and most likely not) but a matter of combining factors.

But I suspect the real problem in knowing the answer is that we have a very short scientific historical record, even if 2000 years ago the measurement was accurate, which it was not.

Why does it matter?

For a number of reasons, starting with climate change here on earth as well as just our understanding the nature of our solar system and then extended to other solar systems of which there are billions... scratch that, trillions.

Things that make you say/think Hmmm?...

Landlord charged for renters' electrical bill? WTF?

Trying to figger if the utility company has a legal leg to stand on here.

An electrical utility company called earlier this week, noting that the electrical bill for Jan 18-Feb 17, 2014 pertaining to a rental house we own had not been billed out. They were looking for the renter during that period. The previous renter had moved out Jan 17, 2014 & cancelled his service but, because it was winter time, the utility company had continued to provide power to that address.

The renter during that period is the same one that currently rents the unit. While the utility company's hands are tied with FOIP et al., the CSR was able to inform me that yes, they currently supply electricity to the rental address & had done so since Jul 1, 2014. I have no idea who supplied electricity during the interim. I replied that the current renter was the same one who occupied the property during the period in question.

The CSR noted that she would attempt to contact the current renter & forward the bill to her. Got home this afternoon & the same CSR had left a message on the answering machine saying that her efforts to contact the renter had been fruitless & that I, the landlord, would be billed for the electricity & it would be up to me to collect.

To complicate issues, the renter is moving out this weekend, she hasn't paid December rent, her security deposit will not cover rent, damages to the unit above normal wear & tear plus the municipal bill (water & garbage), let alone additional utility bills. 100% sure I don't stand a chance of ever seeing money for the electricity.

Long story, one question: From a legal standpoint, is the landlord responsible in any way, shape or form for electrical and/or gas bills in the name of the renter but not paid by the renter?

My gut response to the electrical company is "Get stuffed".

TIA

iPhone 6 glass scuffs

I've been reading various reports about iPhone 6 glass scratches and scuffing easily .... naturally after noticing them on my own iPhone 6.

Lots of tiny almost swirl like scuffs and a long, 2cm line (and, no, I didn't try to buff it and no I don't have a screen protector and never have had on ANY of my previous 2 iPhones or on any cell phone I've had in the last 20+ years with no scratches aside from ones I earned through direct stupidity on my part [i.e. dropping]). Just kept in my pocket as usual and aside from using the camera a bit more often, no changes in my use patterns from earlier models.

So my question is this, have you had the same experience and if so did you try to replace it through applecare or get it fixed (and were you successful)?

I'm not really nitpicking about it but now that I see them I can't unsee them and it's irritating me. :(

Is it time to say goodbye?

Hi guys.

Been on here for many years since in the early Mac Intel was released.

I love the Mac hardware and OS over the years.

Recently I realised the majority of time I spend On the computer doing tasks has become platform agnostic. Email for years has been yahoo or Gmail and I just use the web fronted.

Music is iTunes.. But that's on Windows now too. I don't burn dvds or Cd's anymore. I do edit photos and also video but there seems to be enough comparable apps on Windows to I photo and imovie.

I like the tablet experience and think the iPad is great.

I'm thinking I might get a touch screen windows machine. Fantasized for the past 2 years gaining Apple would release a touch screen MacBook air whose screen could be removed like a tablet. Doesn't seem like that will happen.

I still will have my Mac mini home theatre machine.. So if I need to use Mac software I still can..

Anyone gone through this before?

Also where do I post to get feedback on what my mid 2012 MacBook air (4gb, 256gb) is worth?

Cheers and beers.

Finder in Yosemite: Toolbar covers up top listed items..

In Yosemite, when looking up documents in finder, opening a folder, the top items are covered up by the toolbar. I can scroll up to see them but they spring back under the toolbar when I release. Anybody else have this issue? It's annoying as anything.

Also, when going from say, Chrome, to Finder, the windows I have opened in Chrome get covered up by the Finder window and the only way I can get back to the browser is to click on Applications in Finder, then Chrome.

What's going on here..?

MBA/MBP Retina pricing

Been telling my friends that the pricing delta between the 2 is totally blurring. I was determined to but a MacBook Air as I believe it's the best all around laptop right now. I've seen them boot huge PSDs lightning quick.

And every time I see a decent deal on a MBA, I think about it, then I realize that they're non retina.

Then I just saw this:

Refurbished 13.3-inch MacBook Pro 2.4GHz Dual-core Intel i5 with Retina Display $999 CAD

Dang. Pricing coming down and it's def not the currency.

This has to be the best deal out there now. Retina? ya. Add 4G of ram and maybe 128G of HD and this is perfect.

H!

Refurb 15" or new 13"?

Hi all:

I'm not sure where to post this question so I'm posing it here first. The apple store has a refurb 15.4", 2 ghz, quad core, i7 on sale for $1569.00. Should I purchase this or use my education discount (student discount) and get a new 13" instead? How reliable are refurbished systems?

Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

Ciaochiao (Cc)

Transfer Mail from Snow Leopard to Yosemite

I have a hard drive which is fully functional which came out of a MBP 17" now defunct (and soon to be for sale - has excellent screen, case, keyboard, etc). How do I transfer mail from this drive to the new computer (MBP 13") which will have Yosemite?

I can connect the SL drive via USB. Will Migration Assistant work in this configuration? I can't use Migration assistant in the usual way because the machine is dead.

I do have an SL TimeMachine backup for the machine about a month old although nothing too critical has been done in the interim, but I am concerned because it is on an "Air Disk" in the USB port on my older Airport Extreme. My other computer MB 13" on Yosemite doesn't even seen the "Air Disk" from Time Machine....

Can I just drag the appropriate files/folder for SL Mail over to the Yosemite machine? If so, which and where to.

TIA

Class Action Suit

Are you following this? It's about a ten year old class action suit worth $350 million (or possibly triple that amount) due to Apple allegedly eliminating competitor's music from customer iPods through software updates and stifling competition to keep iPod prices high.

The original two plaintiffs were disqualified because their iPods were not part of the 2006-2009 time frame, and a hasty nationwide search was undertaken yesterday to find a replacement plaintiff.

What I don't get is, if it's a class action suit, why so much difficulty finding a suitable plaintiff?

Don't say something behind one's back that you would not say to face to face...

I agree with that principal, even though I am guilty of breaking it on numerous occasions in my life. The principal is not one of the "10 Commandments" but maybe it should be.

I have to do better...

I would be interested to know who here in their lives have never "talked/thought" about another person "behind their back" (without their knowing, even if no one else was to here to hear it) negatively that they wouldn't be willing to say to face to face.

Two-Step Verification

I, as of yet, have not set up the Two-Step Verification for my Apple ID. I've been reading reports of some who have got locked out of the Apple accounts because they lost their Recovery Keys given during the process of enabling this process of verification. I like security but not the possibility of getting locked out of what, for some, contains their entire digital life. Just wondering how many here have side-stepped the Two-Step Verification that Apple recommends.

hardware or software glitch?

I have a new 5K iMac, specs are:

i7 4ghz

24 gigs of ram (8 gigs Apple RAM, 16 gigs Kingston RAM)

1TB flash

AMD Radeon R9 M295X 4096 MB

Yosemite 10.10.1

I am getting a graphic glitch during mission control and not sure if this is a software glitch or something hardware and is worth lugging into the Apple store. I have attached a screen shot and circled the two places where this glitch is happening. It only seems to happen with these 2 apps (Indesign CC 2014 and Command Workstation). In general everything is running pretty well, I am getting lock ups in indesign that causes me to hard restart the computer. I try and force quit Indesign, but it never works. Not sure if this is a Yosemite problem or a hardware problem. This is my work machine.

need long distance calling card...

I am going to Germany for Christmas with my parents to visit the grandparents. I work in a family business, my dad is the owner. I have a travel plan for his iPhone, 100 mins/150 texts/100mb data for 31 days. I wrongly assumed that he would be able to phone Canada with this, but when talking to Rogers it turns out this would be a long distance call. The only option they gave me would be to buy a long distance calling card for calling Canada. Incoming calls would be long distance as well.

I have never purchased a long distance calling card or any calling card for that matter. How does this work? Any idea on prices, rough estimates? the 100 mins of talk would be enough and the data he has with the travel plan is plenty. Just need an affordable option for long distance from Germany to Canada.

Hope that makes sense.
