Memories Of Christmas Past

Every year as this festive season comes and goes, it leaves me with many fond memories of Christmas over the years. Each year that one ages, it adds to those memories just as sure as it diminishes one’s desire for material things.

They say with age comes wisdom and while not true in every case, it does seem to deepen around the holidays. I thought a thread about your own experiences might give some leave to share those memories with others here.

It might be a story you want to share, or perhaps just a short list of things that gave you joy, either as a kid or an adult or a grandparent. Let me begin with this observations:

● My earliest childhood memories were of helping my parents decorate the living room for Christmas. Rolls of green and red crepe paper were bought (and saved from year to year) and unrolled together, then twisted many times to form colourful ‘streamers’ which hung with tacks from room corner to room corner. They were attached in the middle by a thumb tack and a paper folding bell was opened and hung at room centre on that same tack. The we opened a box of ‘tinsel’ finely cut strips of glistening foil about 18 inches long and one piece was hung across the centre of each twist of those streamers. It wasn’t much, but it was Christmas. Once done, the tree would follow completing the transformation of the living room to a kid’s fantasyland.

Care to share your memories?
