2.4 GHz or 5 GHz WiFi Router?

My old router just quit so I bought a new D-Link AC1200 router that uses both 2.4GHz and 5GHz wireless transmission.

The 5GHz option is a newer standard so I figured it must be better, but....

When I set it up on the 5GHz band, I had the Wireless connection between the router and two different ipads and a 2012 MacBook pro drop every once is a while (which never happened before with the old 2.4GHz router).

I also have a Mac Mini connected wirelessly at 5GHz - it has no problem staying connected and is stable.

I then changed the connection to the ipads and MBp back to 2.4GHz and that connection now is stable but not quite as fast.
The wireless connection to the Mac Mini is still at 5GHz.

I'm in a redidential neighbourhood in a single family housebut I can "see" six other WiFi routers on my Mac.
I'm wondering if the drop outs at 5GHz are caused by interferance from other routers at that frquency.
So the question - can I somehow tell with my Mac if the other WiFi routers I see are transmitting on 2.4 or 5 GHz?

Cross platform USB encription

Hi everyone!!

I have a few USB drives that I use on both Mac and PC. I'm considering encrypting them so that if they're lost or stolen, the data on them won't be recoverable without my password.

In windows, they have Bitlocker - but to get that to work on a MAC there's a 3rd party application to deal with that. But any new mac I plug it in on will need it installed.

I'm looking for something that is like Bitlocker (works on all Windows machines without additional software) but that will work on both Mac and Windows.

Thoughts?

iMac 27"early a1312 EMC 2390 Replaced PS and still won't start.

New Power supply installed and it still won't even start to begin to turn on.

I don't have a hard drive in it, or the monitor back on, will that be a problem for it just to start to fire up, get a bong of life?

I've got to go with the idea that the new PS and the old one are working as both produce the same outputs. (I know, I know! Correlation and conclusion. Otherwise the dude on eBay screwed me.)

I've got the same power output input readings in the new power supply as the old one. 115 on the pigtail connector going into the PS, and on the 8th solder joint of the connector, back of the board facing you, 25.6 volts.

15 - 16
13 - 14
11 - 12
09 - 10
07 - 08 <- 25.6volts
05 - 06
03 - 04
01 - 02

Any suggestions? Anyone encountered this problem before?

Smart Speakers

Checked out the Apple Home Pod but I can’t find any reason to jump in even though I’m Apple Integrated. Just simply lacking the features, although good sound. Looks like Sonos has stepped up to the plate and is now offering a pair of Sonos One speakers for the price of one Apple Home Pod. And, if I’m not mistaken, Amazon Alexa Voice Assistance is now available in Canada (?). I can’t seem to find where to purchase the Sonos One in a pair fro the reduced price of $50 on any site in Canada. They’re all, still listing a $249 price for one.

Imac parts in Ontario

Hey everyone, new to the mac community :)

Does anyone have a good supplier for parts in Ontario? I was wanting to do an ssd upgrade this weekend, and having problems finding the thermal sensor.

I got burned by OWC, macsales.com earlier this week, just finding out today that they placed my ssd upgrade kit order on backorder. I had to contact them to find out, too busy to let me know when the order was placed I guess.

I was really hoping to do the upgrade this weekend, I can get all the other parts today, only thing I can't find it the thermal sensor. Called around to a few mac shops , so far haven't found one that will sell the part, lots that are willing to do the upgrade for me lol. :)

6pk of beer to anyone that can point me to a place I can get one today :) Anyhere in southwestern ON.

Thanks

GTA losing 380 manufacturing jobs

'A truly sad day': Campbell shutting down Toronto soup plant, cutting 380 manufacturing jobs

The Campbell Soup Company's longtime Toronto manufacturing plant will close down within the next 18 months.

The soup giant says it will move its headquarters to a new location in the Greater Toronto Area after the closure, but 380 of the company's current 600 jobs will be "impacted."

"The decision to stop producing soup and broth in Canada was a difficult one," said Campbell executive Mark Alexander. "After a thorough review, we decided this was the best course of action for our business."

The company says the Toronto closure is necessary to improve its operational efficiency, citing a challenging retail environment that has seen volume declines of canned soup in North America.

Campbell says several factors have resulted in excess capacity in its North American supply chain network, and that due to its size and age the Toronto plant cannot be retrofitted in a way that is competitively viable.

* * *

The company says soup and broth production at the Toronto facility will be moved in phases over the next 18 months to three plants in North Carolina, Ohio and Texas.

Campbell says it will move its current Canadian headquarters and commercial operations at the Toronto facility to a new location in the Greater Toronto Area, which will feature a new food innovation centre.

It says about 200 jobs out of the nearly 600 positions at the Toronto facility will be relocated to the new headquarters.

corrupted iPhone backup??

Had issues with my moms iPhone 6 plus camera. I did a backup with iTunes before going to the Apple store. They replaced the phone. I was going to restore from a backup but got this fun message "iTunes could not restore the iPhone "xxxx" because the backup was corrupt or not compatible with the iPhone that is being restored.

Phone is the same iPhone 6+ model, I had done an update and backup before going to the Apple store so that should all be fine. Really trying to get pictures and things back. What can I do here or am I stuck paying for an app to try and get the pictures out of the backup??

I was looking for a place to post this, but it didn't really fit in the other war-related discussions we've had (for reference, see bottom of this post).

I'm intrigued by this new project of director Peter Jackson, bringing to life archival footage and audio interviews with soldiers who served in WWI. The remastering of old footage is quite stunning:

My daughter has a non-functioning iMac that is 7 years old. She brought it to Apple who, after testing, concluded that the HD had failed. However, Apple will not repair it (replace the HD) because the computer is obsolete. He suggested that the HD can be replaced at a non-Apple shop but did not give any suggestions.

Where in Ottawa or Gatineau can a reputable shop do the repair?

iMac 27" a1312 PS problems. Need Service Manuals

'
Came across a 27" 2011 a1312 iMac, that won't start. Opened it up and poked around, and it appears it needs a PS at first blush.

Does anyone have, or can point me to the Tech Manuals, service manuals on how to test the PS, or any tips.

I don't even know where the LEDs are!

I get power into the PS but only 25.8 volts on the 4th pin on the output, if that helps.

Anyway, any suggestions would be great.

Thanks,

For Sale MacPro 2006 with CPU upgrades - not working

FOR SALE
$100 + shipping

NOT WORKING

Machine quit after a reboot and now will not start. No sounds or lights at all. I suspect the power supply.

Originally a 2006 "MacPro1,1" model. I upgraded it with two Xeon quad-core X5355 2.66 GHz CPUs. Thus is it now an eight-core machine. OS X identifies it as a "MacPro2,1" model.

"About This Mac" reports the following

Code:

Model Name:        Mac Pro
Model Identifier:        MacPro2,1
Processor Name:        Quad-Core Intel Xeon
Processor Speed:        2.66 GHz
Number Of Processors:        2
Total Number Of Cores:        8
L2 Cache (per processor):        8 MB
Memory:        12 GB
Bus Speed:        1.33 GHz
Boot ROM Version:        MP21.007F.B06
SMC Version (system):        1.7f10
Serial Number (system):        RM7290VEUQ2
Hardware UUID: 00000000-0000-1000-8000-0017F207EB48

Included:
  • Original GeForce 7300 GT video card
  • DVD drive
  • 12 GB RAM
  • Airport wireless module installed
  • Bluetooth module installed
  • 4 empty hard drive sleds

No hard drives, no keyboard, no mouse

This machine is 64 bit but Apple gave it a 32 bit firmware so that is the best that OS X will support. The highest version of OS X that will run with the 7300 GT video card is 10.6.8. Debian Linux, however, can run the machine in full 64 bit mode. (Which is how I was using it.)

Will ship to any Canadian address at buyer's expense. Reply with your postal code for a shipping cost.

Tim Cook says the next iOS update will allow users to disable intentional battery slo

Tim Cook says the next iOS update will allow users to disable intentional battery slowdowns

Quote:

Apple CEO Tim Cook today shared that the next update to iOS 11 will allow users to disable battery performance throttling on their device. The move comes after Apple last month admitted it intentionally slows down iPhones as they get older to prevent issues that may arise as the batteries depreciate.

In an interview with ABC News, Cook said the update will arrive next month in a developer release before a wider public rollout. “We’re going to give people the visibility of the health of their battery so it’s very, very transparent,” he says. “This hasn’t been done before.”

Cook also says the update will more clearly inform users when their iPhone is automatically reducing its performance in an effort to prevent unexpected shutdowns. “If you don’t want it, you can turn it off,” Cook says, though he maintains that this is not recommended — something Apple stands by in its apology letter that addressed consumers after the backlash in December. Apple currently faces multiple class action lawsuits after admitting to intentionally slowing down iPhones.

The next iOS 11 developer beta is expected in early February, which means a public release will follow some time in March.

The clever fox

There once lived a crow. One day he was very hungry. He had not been able to get any food the previous day. “If I do not get anything to eat I will starve to death," he thought. As the crow was searching for food, his eyes fell on a piece of bread. He quickly swooped down, picked it up and flew off. Far away in a lonely place he sat on a tree to enjoy the bread. Just then a hungry fox saw the crow sitting on the tree holding the bread in his mouth. “Yummy! That bread looks delicious. What I would give to get that piece of bread," the fox thought. The fox decided to use all his cunning means to get the piece of bread from the mouth of the crow. He sat under the tree. The crow saw him and thought, “I guess this fox wants to eat my bread. I shall hold it carefully." And he held on to the bread even more tightly. The clever fox spoke to the crow politely. He said, “Hello friend! How are you?" But the crow did not say anything. “Crows are such lovely birds. And you are very charming too," said the fox, flattering the crow Then the fox said," I have heard that besides being beautiful you also have a sweet voice. Please sing a song for me." By now the crow started to believe what the fox was saying. “The fox knows true beauty. I must be the most beautiful bird in this whole world. I will sing him a song," thought the crow. As soon as the foolish crow opened his mouth to sing the bread fell from its beak and into the ground. The Clever fox, which had just been waiting for this very moment, caught the bread in his mouth and gulped it down his throat. The crow had paid a heavy price for his foolishness.

scheduling Genius Bar appointment for moms phone...

My mom has my old iPhone 6+. It has a camera issue, everything is shaky and she cannot take pictures, well pictures that do not look like they have been tumbling. Anyways I wanted to make a genius bar appointment and get this fixed. I go to schedule using my Apple ID and it shows my products and some work computers but my moms phone is not there and I cannot add it. How do I add this so I can make a genius bar appointment? My mom is not going to deal with the tech stuff, she is clueless in this regard and thus it is my job. I have done this in the past with no issue but they obviously changed things. I do have some work computers showing up under my Apple ID and I am not sure why. The only thing I can think of is I would have logged into the App store with my Apple ID at one point to download an app.

Would this be all I need to do to get my moms phone to show up under my products so I can make an appointment for the phone?

R.I.P. "The Cranberries" Dolores O'Riordon

Unexpected and terribly sad. The Cranberries' 1994 album "No Need to Argue" was one of my favourites...

Dolores O'Riordan, Cranberries lead singer, dead at 46

Dolores O'Riordan, lead singer of Irish band The Cranberries, has died. She was 46.

Publicist Lindsey Holmes said O'Riordan died suddenly Monday in London, where she was recording.

The cause of death wasn't immediately available. Holmes said the singer's family is "devastated" by the news.

The Limerick band became international stars in the 1990s with hits including Zombie and Linger.

O'Riordan previously lived in Canada for a time with her now former husband, Don Burton, with whom she has three children. The couple separated in 2014.

Attacks against Muslims in Canada

'I felt really scared:' Toronto girl says man tried to cut off her hijab as she walked to school - Toronto - CBC News

An 11-year-old Toronto girl says a man attempted twice to cut off her hijab as she walked to school on Friday morning, and police are now characterizing the attack as a hate crime.

"I felt really scared and confused," Khawlah Noman, a student at Pauline Johnson Junior Public School in Scarborough, Ont., said at a news conference Friday afternoon.

Khawlah said she felt the man behind her while she was walking to school with her younger brother, Mohammad Zakariyya, and turned around and saw him holding scissors. She says she screamed and he ran away, but returned a few minutes later.

"He continued cutting my hijab again" before smiling and running away, said Khawlah.

Toronto police are investigating the incident as a hate crime.

* * *

Khawlah said she's now "actually really scared" to walk to school.

"What you're doing is really wrong, you should not act like this, and especially, I'm a kid," she said, addressing her attacker.

* * *

Police are asking for the public's help to identify the attacker described as Asian, of medium build, with a thin moustache and black prescription glasses.

The man is said to be in his mid-20s, and was wearing a black hooded sweatshirt and black pants.

They are asking that anyone with security or dash cam video who may have been in the Birchmount Road and Bay Mills Boulevard area around 9 a.m. to check their footage in case they captured the attack.

BT Headphones way out of sync

Got a set of Marshall Major II headphones and am finding that the audio is way out of sync. It would be fine with music, but, with video, not acceptable. Haven’t yet wired them up, but for now, I’m quite disappointed , at least with my iPad. Haven’t yet paired them to my Mac. I’ve read of lots of BT listeners having no lag issues at all. High Sierra and interesting info

Upgraded to HS in early Dec after getting swamped with shoves by Apple to do so. Started having problems with Photos (iphotos, PhotoBooth, Facetime) where attempting to use software immediately crashed my 2012 Mac Book Pro.
Could NOT get to Recovery. Hard to boot.... tried all listed tips. Machine would shut down if not used for a while (1-2 hrs).

Fast forward.... have been coping until Tuesday when I took machine into repair place (Apple authorized) where they informed me that they were receiving MANY complaints about HS OS (I was 3rd in line!) and they would have to update my firmware. I questioned this and was told I could not get appropriate firmware and they needed to charge me.

Called today to pickup machine and told my Graphics Board was shot and my computer was trash. (This info didn't show up in checking the Hardware status.)

I'm using the broken computer and while I assume it will crash again at some point. The install to the new OS and the graphics card fail seemed to be paired.

Anyone want to speculate (as I shop for a new machine)?

The Ontario Political Thread

We need a thread on these boards to separate the Ontario Progs from the Ottawa Progs.

I'll start:

Vilification of Tim Hortons and Ontario Small Businesses another bleak sign Canada is in a slow lockstep march towards socialistic collapse

Quote:

Leave it to the premier of Ontario and Canada’s state broadcaster to stoke anti-business ire by using Canada’s once-beloved homegrown coffee chain as their scapegoat.

After Premier Kathleen Wynne rammed through new legislation hiking the minimum wage by 21 per cent at the start of 2018, without conducting any impact assessment and going against her old pledge to not raise it above inflation and giving only six-months notice, the CBC had the perfect news report to whip up proletarian anger at the business community, which would deflect blame from the unpopular Liberal premier.
h/t SDA, from whence comes this prescient comment:

Quote:

If a small cut in tax revenue that decreases government revenues or a small cut in government subsidies is outrageous and immoral, but large government imposed policies that reduces the profitability of small businesses and results in fewer jobs for low income citizens is social justice....then you might be a progressive.
Nails it.

Related:

Just who’s the bully when it comes to minimum wage hikes?

Quote:

Dramatically increasing minimum wages in the food industry is irresponsible and even reckless.

On Jan. 1, Ontario’s minimum wage increased by 22 per cent, to $14 an hour. It will go to $15 on Jan. 1, 2019. That’s almost a 32 per cent increase in 12 months. Other provinces, such as Alberta and B.C., will follow suit.

This obviously puts pressure on many businesses to recalibrate operating budgets. And the large food sector, where many workers earn the minimum wage, is already coping with major headwinds.

Running Sierra and having a few little headaches after having to switch to Google business for my email. I want to set up a rule that only applies to one account. I have 3 mail accounts in apple mail. I have to use POP mail for my business account and the issue with Gmail and POP accounts is when you send an email it puts the sent message in my inbox. I made a rule to put anything from my own email account in my sent box, this works great accept if I get sent something from my business email to my personal email the rule applies and puts it in the sent box rather then my personal inbox.

How do I set up a rule to put all emails from xxxx@mydomain.ca in my sent box but only apply that to xxxx@domain.ca and not personal@mydomain.ca and personal@rogers.com accounts?

I have this rule already set up but is not working as I need it to, everything from my business email is still going to sent box even from my personal emails.

Resizing A GIF?

From time to time I find a gif I would like to use on my site, but I am limited to a working width of 700 pixels in my RapidWeaver format.

I normally use Preview to resize most anything I require, but it does not work for a gif for whatever reason.

I just discovered one way to do that quite by accident. If I send the gif by email to myself by dragging it in to the body of the email, I can then select the size as small, medium or large and it arrives resized. Although I cannot get it to an exact size, I can get it to a usable size using this workaround I discovered.

Anyone know a better way to do this?

Apple ID trouble

Got a message on my iPhone popup about "Trust this computer" which I thought was coming from mine.
Both on my iPhone and MBP this morning, I was asked to enter my Apple ID password and it was rejected. I immediately went in to change my password through security questions asked. I then logged in okay with my Mac. After a reboot, I was asked for password again and I entered it and got in.
Not so on iPad and iPhone. I enter my new password and the enter window just stays there and eventually goes away, but then I am told that I need to enter my password for some services. What's going on here?

Update: After a number of reboots, both devices seem ok now. I was worried there for a bit that a hacker was at work haha. Never had this happen before.

sent mail in inbox?

Our provider for our business email stopped and we had to move to google business for our email, so new setup, lots of fun getting it working. Anyways, all up and running but I noticed something weird in Apple Mail in Sierra. When I replied to an email I get the reply in my inbox, seems to group it together. I do not want this and do not want what I sent to be in my inbox. What settings do I need to change to keep emails ungrouped and not have what I sent show up in inbox and only sent box?

Forgot to mention, this is a POP email account, not IMAP. Looks like it shows on other computers with the same account as well getting the same message after I send.

What;s the story on Spectre and Meltdown

This is all over the news
CPU security flaws: What to do about the Spectre and Meltdown risks - Jan. 4, 2018

I keep reading a software update is required urgently to somehow contain this, but when I just checked for OS X updates, there was nothing.

I'm running 10. 11.6 on a couple of Macs.

Anyone have any insight what Apple is doing in this respect?

Monitoring childrens devices

Hello all,

I have a special need child who is coming of age and is venturing out onto the internet Via games and such. I need a way to monitor all their actions on the device. Can anyone steer me in the right direction. I am pretty computer savvy but there are so many programs out there. I have no idea which is the most suitable.

Display Abnomoly

This happens on occasion until a reboot. Right now, I've got a very small document icon (looks like a pdf) stuck on my MBP display. It's not clickable or anything...just a very small icon stuck in place. I've included a screenshot of it. Nothing serious, but I'm wondering why.

Netflix and 10.9.5

http://ift.tt/1L0uDiQ

Given that article, am I right in thinking that my Mac running 10.9.5 has no way of viewing Netflix at 1080p even on Safari?

Keyboard Lag, etc.

Seems to have started some time ago. There’s an incredible lag in my typing, with caps and periods showing up where I didn’t put them. I’m on the newest iPad Pro 10.5 inch. Very annoying. Is there a fix for this? Already rebooted.
