Well bugger me, Apple reinstate useful iWork features...

... six years on? (I've lost count)

I have only had a chance to play with Pages so far. Still clunky but very useful features such as:

- Facing pages in WP mode with a reasonable number of options
- Threading in DTP mode
- Ability to create templates from scratch or by modifying existing ones

This means that I have already started migrating InDesign simpler documents. My colleagues will be relieved (couldn't face learning InD)...

Utah Goes Free Range

Really sad that legislation along these lines is even needed. I know that my generation is far healthier for having grown up in a free range environment.

https://www.deseretnews.com/article/...parenting.html

Quote:

SALT LAKE CITY — So-called free-range parenting will soon be the law of the land in Utah after the governor signed what appears to be the country's first measure to formally legalize allowing kids to do things on their own to foster self-sufficiency.

The bill, which Gov. Gary Herbert announced Friday that he'd signed, specifies that it isn't neglectful to let kids do things alone like travel to school, explore a playground or stay in the car. The law takes effect May 8.

Utah's law is the first in the country, said Lenore Skenazy, who coined the term free-range parent. A records search by the National Conference of State Legislatures didn't turn up any similar legislation in other states.

Utah lawmakers said they were prompted to pass the law after seeing other states where parents had been investigated and in some cases had their children temporarily removed when people reported seeing kids playing basketball in their yards or walking to school alone.

Can't empty trash - Error code -50

I have been trying to empty the trash on a Mini running OS 10.11

Nothing I tried works
I have tried holding down the option key while emptying
Rebooted the Mac several times
Booted up the Mac from a back up and ran Disk Utility on the internal drive - no problems.

What else can I try?

Background is that I was planning to run Onyx because I'm suddenly getting a lot of these spinning colour wheels which I never had before.
Onyx suggested doing a backup first - sounds like a good idea
But when I ran a backup last night, the backup failed about 2 hours in and a folder was identified that caused the problem.
The folder is called an install disk for eMac 700 Mb - a computer a member of the family had for a short time probably 10 or more years ago. So I decided to put that folder in the trash and run SuperDuper again.
Except now I can't empty that folder and if I run SD again it's probably going to hang up on that same item again. I'm assuming trash items that are still in the trash will also be duplicated.

What I get when I try to empty the trash is this:
The operation can’t be completed because an unexpected error occurred (error code -50).

High Sierra and FAT32

I occasionally copy large files to Windows FAT32 formatted disks, but not very often, obviously, because I only just came across this gift from Apple, and it's existed since High Sierra was released.

Lots of devices like cameras and GPS units require FAT32 formatting. The maximum file size for the FAT32 format is 4 GB. (Newer devices use EXFAT formatting which makes life easier, but there are still millions of devices that only deal with the old FAT32).

Mac OS X has never had a problem formatting FAT32 drives and partitions, and copying is a simple drag and drop as long as you are under the 4GB limit. Up until now.

With High Sierra, the Finder has a self-imposed file size limit of 2 GB for copying to a FAT32 partition. I have a Garmin map that is 3 GB, well within the FAT32 size limit, but I can't copy it to the SD card that my Garmin uses because Finder gives me an error message. With OSX Sierra and below, the drag and drop copy works fine.

If you know your Unix, you can manually copy the file using the cp command in a terminal window. Other Finder replacement apps have no trouble, either. It's just Finder.

This bug has been discussed since October 2017 but has still not been fixed in any of the updates.

High Sierra is a hot mess that just keeps giving.

Is cdn.mxpnl.com a virus or an analytical site?

When I use Firefox to access a webinar scheduling site we have a contract with, it often takes a minute or more for the site to come up and while I'm waiting I see this in the browser bottom left window
Waiting for cdn.mxpnl.com

Decided to google this to see what the browser is waiting for and google brings up both a "Mixpanel product analytics hit and a bunch of hits how to remove the cdn.mxpnl.com virus.

Anyone know what this is about?
If it is the analytic site I will just wait for the webinar site to load, but if it is some type of browser virus I want to get rid of it - but not necessarily with the methods that come up with google that could give me more headaches.

BTW - I only see this delay when I try to access that webinar site.
I use Firefox for 90% of my browsing and all other sites come up very quickly

Windows 10 Purchase to run on my Mac

Hi,

I want to get the Window 10 operating system to add on a partition of my Mac and run that with boot camp.

When I look at the options of buying that, I come across dozens of ebay auctions for the activation key for essentially pennies.

Like this one, but there are dozens more
https://www.ebay.com/itm/GENUINE-WIN...EAAOSwFHZan8hf

For the price of the key, something is obviously not on the upand up....or maybe it is.
This guy sold over 1000 with no complaints.

Anyone have any insight what is going on?
Do these codes just suddenly get invalid and will Windows then no longer boot?
Or has someone outside Microsoft figured out the algorithm to generate the key.

I haven't looked at Windows for years so I have no clue how they now distribute software

reclaim over 100GBs on your drive

so since High Serria i have been noticing GBs vanishing from my computer..
then i read an article

if you type this in terminal :
tmutil listlocalsnapshots /

your will see a list of snap shots.. meaning apple is using your local drive for time machine as well as your external..

to delete the local snap shots :

sudo tmutil deletelocalsnapshots {then type the local snapshot name here ]
in my case it was : sudo tmutil deletelocalsnapshots 2018-03-15-133202

unfortunately there is no way of disabling it.. unless you disable time machine and use carbon copy instead.

ACC-Review scam text message

My wife received a message to go to ACC-review.com.
Looks like a scam so wondering if anyone else has seen this message.
We went to the site and it was about a Hydro refund and to choose our bank account from a list of all the big banks.
Didn't bother, closed the page and went back to double check and that's when Google put up a red warning page with serious warnings not to proceed.

Ebay purchase

I recently purchase a 13" 2012 macbook pro on Ebay.
The seller stated that they had trouble installing a mac OS on it. So they installed a Linux based OS on it instead.
I tried to install Sierra on it from a memory stick but soon discovered that it has a efi lock on it. I had to get Ebay involved and got my money back as the seller wouldn't take it back and told me that he didn't install a efi lock on it.
I still have the macbook.
My question is how did he install Linux on it with this hardware lock? Is the efi tied into the hd with Linux?
What if I install a mac os on the drive from another macbook and then reinstall it back into this laptop? It currently won't boot from a memory stick and either shows a flashing folder or asks for the password if I install a newly formatted drive into the laptop.

Austin, Tx. bombings

Somebody's trying (and succeeding) to kill Blacks and Hispanics in Austin, Texas:

Austin package explosions:
Third bomb hits city hosting South by Southwest as officials warn residents to be wary of unexpected packages

A third explosion has been linked to two other deadly attacks at homes in Texas this month, where police are warning residents not to touch any unexpected boxes that end up on their door steps.

Austin Police Chief Brian Manley confirmed to reporters that the third blast — which followed just hours after an earlier deadly explosion Monday — is suspected of being connected to the recent explosions.

"This, again, is the third in what we believe to be related incidents that have occurred in the past 10 days," Mr Manley said. "Similar to what we have said in the earlier incidents, we want the community to be aware of what is going on."

The third blast sent a 75-year-old Hispanic woman to the hospital, while the second blast killed a 17-year-old boy and injured an adult woman who was in the room at the time of the explosion. A previous explosion on March 2 killed a 39-year-old man.

* * *

None of the packages were reportedly delivered through standard mail delivery services, Mr Manley said, suggesting that they had all been placed there in-person by the attacker.

* * *

All of the victims involved in the three attacks so far have been minorities in the city. The first two attacks targeted households of African Americans, while the third injured a Hispanic woman.

When asked if investigators are considering a potential hate crime, the police chief reiterated that nothing had been ruled out so far.

I think having a single USB-C port like the MacBook would be ridiculous.

Little Red Riding Hood 2

Once upon a time, there was a little girl who lived in a village near the forest. Whenever she went out, the little girl wore a red riding cloak, so everyone in the village called her Little Red Riding Hood.
One morning, Little Red Riding Hood asked her mother if she could go to visit her grandmother as it had been awhile since they'd seen each other.
"That's a good idea," her mother said. So they packed a nice basket for Little Red Riding Hood to take to her grandmother.
When the basket was ready, the little girl put on her red cloak and kissed her mother goodbye.
"Remember, go straight to Grandma's house," her mother cautioned. "Don't dawdle along the way and please don't talk to strangers! The woods are dangerous."
"Don't worry, mommy," said Little Red Riding Hood, "I'll be careful."
But when Little Red Riding Hood noticed some lovely flowers in the woods, she forgot her promise to her mother. She picked a few, watched the butterflies flit about for awhile, listened to the frogs croaking and then picked a few more.

I Need Some Expert Help. Can An Email Be Retrieved?

Here is my situation.

Yesterday in the early afternoon I received an email from a corporation that agreed to a proposal I had made to them a couple of days earlier.

I was not home and read the email in the gmail account of Apple Mail on my iPhone 8 Plus.

When I got home about an hour later, I turned on my MacBook Pro and checked my email.

There was no sign of the email in Apple Mail at all.

I pulled my phone from my pocket to reread the email and it was still there. A half hour later when I checked my mail again, it had vanished from my iPhone as well.

I then went to my gmail webmail account and there was no record of that email there either.

As this is an important email, I would like to know if I can recover it. I suspect now that the email was somehow removed from both my devices by the sender. Is that possible?

And if it is, can that email be recovered from my Apple mail account?

I would appreciate any assistance in solving this puzzling situation.

Wifi & Ethernet at the same time??

Have a MacBook Pro, earlier retina model. We are using it to run a wide format eco-solvent printer (64inch Epson). Running Windows 10 in Parallels to run the software for the printer (Onyx RIP). Need wifi for the network connection and ethernet for a direct connection to the printer.

Now in Parallels I was able to make a second network connection and set it for wifi, first is for ethernet. Windows 10 works fine now, have both wifi for web browsing, etc and ethernet for a connection to the printer. For some reason even though wifi is connected in MacOS High Sierra, no internet will work till I disconnect the ethernet (through thunderbolt adapter).

How do I set wifi for the default network connection in MacOS while keeping the ethernet connection to be used in Windows 10 as a VM?

Everything is latest updates.

Thanks

Apple Is Under Fire For Moving iCloud Data To China

Quote:

Apple's latest move in China has privacy advocates and human rights groups worried.

The U.S. company is moving iCloud accounts registered in mainland China to state-run Chinese servers on Wednesday along with the digital keys needed to unlock them.

"The changes being made to iCloud are the latest indication that China's repressive legal environment is making it difficult for Apple to uphold its commitments to user privacy and security," Amnesty International warned in a statement Tuesday.

The criticism highlights the tradeoffs major international companies are making in order to do business in China, which is a huge market and vital manufacturing base for Apple (AAPL).

In the past, if Chinese authorities wanted to access Apple's user data, they had to go through an international legal process and comply with U.S. laws on user rights, according to Ronald Deibert, director of the University of Toronto's Citizen Lab, which studies the intersection of digital policy and human rights.

"They will no longer have to do so if iCloud and cryptographic keys are located in China's jurisdiction," he told CNNMoney.

Old Mac Mini – e-waste?

I have an old Mac Mini that i want to dispose of. I can't imagine it being too useful to anyone, given its age, but I hate throwing stuff out, too.

The computer in question is a Mac Mini from 2005 (specs here: https://everymac.com/systems/apple/m...i_g4_1.42.html ). It still functions with whatever operating system it has on it.

What are my chances of finding someone who can get a little more use out of it? I'm not looking to sell it, I just want another choice besides dropping it off at an e-waste depot.

Selling as-is, with only the power cord extra. ie no mouse, keyboard, extra software etc.

I am in Toronto, and willing to deliver within reason.

Muskoka: missing seniors... murder?

A disturbing read... kudos to the CBC and The Walrus for this investigation...

Muskoka mystery: Missing senior killed to stop her from reporting 'mistreatment, neglect,'

Police believed an elderly woman who disappeared in Ontario's cottage country two decades ago was killed to "prevent her from reporting frauds, thefts, mistreatment and neglect she was enduring" from her landlords, according to documents recently obtained by The Fifth Estate.

The Ontario Provincial Police documents, obtained in court by The Fifth Estate and the Walrus magazine, were part of a search warrant application filed in a homicide investigation into the disappearance of Joan Lawrence, a local woman known as The Cat Lady who went missing in Muskoka in the late 1990s.

Happy Birthday Dr. Seuss

March 2, 1904: Dr. Seuss is born

In a Massachusetts town they call Springfield
As his fans know is true.
The author was born, and he liked to paint, too.
Theodore Geisel was his name, but he changed it to stay.
Dr. Seuss, he became, as he's known to this day.
His start was in ads, and magazines, too.
He soon switched to books, at least one on a zoo.
He rhymed about ham. He rhymed about things.
He rhymed about Grinches and Sneetches and kings.
His words made no sense. But they always rang true.
With whimsy and fun, he knew just what to do.
His books they are loved by the old and the small.
He was sure to include a wink to us all.
Some books became films. Some were a fable.
If you looked hard enough, there is always a moral:
Be good and be kind. Be bold. Go outside.
Dr. Seuss has sold millions and millions and millions of books.
From Horton to Yertle, we've all had a look.
Through forties and fifties and sixties and on, as they say.
His books were quite popular.
And remain just that way.
So here's to old Dr. Seuss and the stories he made.
In 1904, he began on this day.
– Eric Atkins, with apologies to Dr. Seuss
