Can't empty trash - Error code -50

I have been trying to empty the trash on a Mini running OS 10.11

Nothing I tried works
I have tried holding down the option key while emptying
Rebooted the Mac several times
Booted up the Mac from a back up and ran Disk Utility on the internal drive - no problems.

What else can I try?

Background is that I was planning to run Onyx because I'm suddenly getting a lot of these spinning colour wheels which I never had before.
Onyx suggested doing a backup first - sounds like a good idea
But when I ran a backup last night, the backup failed about 2 hours in and a folder was identified that caused the problem.
The folder is called an install disk for eMac 700 Mb - a computer a member of the family had for a short time probably 10 or more years ago. So I decided to put that folder in the trash and run SuperDuper again.
Except now I can't empty that folder and if I run SD again it's probably going to hang up on that same item again. I'm assuming trash items that are still in the trash will also be duplicated.

What I get when I try to empty the trash is this:
The operation can’t be completed because an unexpected error occurred (error code -50).
